Abstract:
Conducting a complete human factors/ergonomics (HF/E) audit of a unique technological device can be complicated. Designing an instrument to aid HF/E practitioners in this process can help to ensure that organizational and operator needs are taken into consideration, relevant HF/E principles are followed, and future audits for similar devices are streamlined. Our team designed such an instrument to evaluate a locomotive remote control device. We provide illustrations of the process cycle and time requirements for each phase to be used as a planning tool for HF/E practitioners who are faced with a similar challenge.

A methodology is demonstrated which systematically interpreted aircraft inspection tasks in human factors terms, performed projects where human/system mismatches were found, and re-integrated the project findings to provide for comprehensive intervention. A generic function description was first used to structure extensive hangar-floor observations and analysis, and potential mismatches determined. Projects were completed for each function, for example redesigned workcards for the Initiate function and lighting studies for the Search function. Integrative techniques developed were a computer-based audit program to evaluate human factors in aircraft inspection tasks, and a systematic implementation technique based on human factors teams in the hangar.

Abstract:
Human Factors and ergonomics professionals are often asked to “show” how their research has affected on-the-job human performance. They are asked to show measurable changes in human effectiveness and efficiency at work. There is always the demand for HF&E researchers to create procedures and tools that can guide non-human factors personnel to make the “right” human-centered decisions. This symposium will show and distribute such tools that have been designed and tested in an aviation maintenance environment. For over six years now, the Federal Aviation Administration Office of Aviation Medicine has conducted an extensive research program centered on human factors in aviation maintenance and inspection. The research program has earned a reputation of demonstrating a “hands-on” understanding of aviation maintenance and maintaining a close working relationship with all segments of the industry. The symposium will begin with an overview of FAA-sponsored research results applied to aviation maintenance and safety over the past six years. In the second paper the Human Factors Guide for Aviation Maintenance, completed in 1995, will be described. The third presentation will demonstrate a CD-ROM version of the Guide. The presentation shall also discuss human-computer interface issues pertinent to developing interactive multi-media information systems. The final presentation will show a multi-media software package to conduct ergonomics audits in a variety of industrial environments. The system has evolved from three years of ergonomics audit research in aviation maintenance workplaces. Each of the session presentations will demonstrate and distribute HF&E tools to session attendees.

Abstract:
This thesis investigated the use of auralization in the design phase of architectural projects. While this technology, which consists of rendering audible numerical acoustical simulations, has been extensively used in research, from cognitive to human-computer interfaces to archeology to concert halls acoustics evaluation studies, only limited data existed on its use by acoustical consultants for acoustical design. The question was to evaluate if auralizations can improve the processes of acoustical design for the conception of architectural spaces. Based on the practical acceptability theory, the use of auralizations has been studied through questionnaire and interviews of acoustical consultants, as well as the observation of a practical case study project, conducted in collaboration with Theatre Projects Consultants. These enabled the identification of the main uses of auralizations, as well as the difficulties encountered that impede the adoption of the technology. One of the requirements for its adoption is the accuracy and reliability of both the results and the tools themselves. Therefore, the stability of auditory perception was assessed in perceptive studies along a set of subjective attributes, with auralizations rendered over different interfaces, including sound reproduction methods and VR visual interfaces. The two sound reproduction methods compared were head-tracked Binaural and Ambisonic while the VR visual devices compared were a HMD and a CAVE-light system. A relative stability of auditaptory perception was observed, while the perceived Envelopment and Apparent Source Width were slightly impacted by the rendering system in both cases. Efforts in the adaptability of auralization tools for use in architectural design and knowledge transfer from research to industry are still needed for a better integration of auralizations in architects and acousticians workflow

Abstract:

Abstract:
Introducing serious gaming systems (SGS) has the potential to enhance trainee experience and performance across the construction industry and its supply chain, such as mechanical engineering services. SGS as an ‘enabler’ in architectural engineering has received limited research in its role to assess and enhance the performance of its workforce. In a personnel high-risk environment, improving training standards to eliminate or reduce health and safety risks, in addition to providing an understanding of workers’ ergonomics, ensures sustainability of both the project and its workforce. This paper presents an activity tracking and feedback system that captures the physical activity of a construction worker climbing a ladder. Climbing is captured with a 3D motion capture system and processed in real-time to identify potential areas of underperformance. A simple and representative scoring method was established as a reporting method (game statistics) for giving feedback about the correctness of the activity. It can nonetheless be tuned to characterise and adjust to various complexity levels in-line with the required training standards. Furthermore, the motion data and feedback information are fed into a virtual gaming environment enabling the real-time visualisation of the trainee’s motion and experiential learning of the performance through visual and audio feedback. The gaming concepts are employed here with multiple purposes, particularly for accelerating and facilitating the learning process of the trainee. In addition to the 3D motion capturing system, this paper outlines and tests a proposed serious cyber-physical gaming system that incorporates wearable technologies that has the potential to support both construction training and practice.
