Abstract:
General Motors (GM) ergonomics activity began over 30 years ago as a decentralized, ad-hoc effort in various plants and divisions. In the mid-80’s GM and The United Automobile Workers (UAW) Union participated in an ergonomics pilot project with the University of Michigan (resulting in several published articles). In 1990 UAW-GM- Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) entered into an agreement on Ergonomics. These were the catalyst for Ergonomics Program in General Motors. By the mid-2000’s GM recognized how critical it was to shift more attention to “designing in” ergonomic principles and guidelines early in the vehicle and powertrain development process. Today, our Global Manufacturing Engineering Ergonomics team (Program Ergonomists) consist of individuals around the globe that execute our ergonomics process across several functional groups, as a single voice to ensure: Vehicle and Powertrain Product Engineering (PE) teams implement ergonomic principles in the products we make, and Manufacturing Engineering (ME) teams implement ergonomic principles when launching new programs in the manufacturing plants. Our primary focus is to design out systemic product and manufacturing issues and prevent future ergonomics issues before the product goes into production. GM’s ergonomics process is based on proactive assessments using internal and external ergonomic tools, research, and guidelines.

Abstract:
Definitions of ergonomics reference its application to both productivity and well-being. Discussions in the ergonomics literature consider the correspondence between these goals in ergonomic practice and make the case for a robust conception that advances the twin agendas of safety and productivity, contrary to the dominant understanding that ergonomics is primarily concerned with safety. This article examines the professional practices as reported from a sample of 21 ergonomists from across Canada with a combined experience of 296 years. The analysis aims to understand the reported intersection of safety and productivity in the ergonomists’ work and the broader conditions that structure this negotiation. Results provide strong support for the view that ergonomics is primarily associated with safety. This is evident in the structural location of ergonomics within health and safety units of workplaces and in ergonomists’ reports that the main focus of their work is safety concerns. A minority of study participants indicated that they addressed productivity concerns in their work, either as secondary or primary outcomes of ergonomic applications. In either instance, efforts to highlight the contribution of ergonomics to production did not significantly disrupt the dominant safety-oriented perception of the field. Financial considerations were major determinants of whether recommendations were accepted and implemented. The argument for the more robust vision of ergonomics advanced within the profession reflects an effort to overcome the organizational divide between safety and productivity by stressing that, in effective ergonomics applications, safety and productivity are joined in the production process and ergonomists have a main role to play in advancing both agendas. The analysis provided here has identified significant challenges to the adoption of this position. An irony of the dominant understanding of ergonomics as oriented to safety is that this provides the main basis for its growing presence in workplaces but also limits its applications.

Abstract:
The sandwich generation phenomenon raises the stereotype that the elderly are a "burden" for the younger generation. This makes the elderly want to be active, independent and productive through self-actualization. One way to overcome this problem is to provide opportunities for the elderly to work and contribute to society. Projects created to help the elderly tend to be less friendly to the elderly such as work environments that are not ergonomic, limited accessibility and services that are not in accordance with the needs of the elderly. Lack of attention to the comfort of the elderly in projects for the elderly can have a negative impact on the health and well-being of the elderly. Based on these problems, the design of the Senior Farmers Market requires an ergonomic study so that the elderly can work comfortably. Thus, ergonomic work environment design is needed to create a comfortable and safe work environment for the elderly. Ergonomics study itself is a relevant approach to understanding and improving aspects of the design of a project that can affect the comfort and productivity of its users. This study aims to explore the ergonomics study approach as a design principle in the context of a senior farmers market that is friendly to its workers who are mostly elderly. This research uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach, observation, and ergonomic analysis to identify the ergonomic needs of the elderly.

Abstract:
Ergonomics developed in Italy in the seventies in a milieu characterized by severe social tensions as well as by a huge applicative demand raising the problem of large industrial plant transformation and redesigning. Since then many changes have occurred: a change in demand, a generational change, a change in training, the increasing number of company's ergonomic services. The traditional sector of workplace analysis and redesigning was supplemented by other activities in product ergonomics. Within the process of Italian and European certification, these changes led the Italian Ergonomics Society to work out a professional profile of the ergonomist, which is now included in a Law Bill.

Abstract:
Even though a large amount of ergonomic data and recommendations are available, tools, equipment and products are quite frequently subject to considerable ergonomic deficiencies. The reason for this is that knowledge of ergonomics is not as widespread as the expert would like it. The designer of work places and equipment usually has a rather small background of ergonomics. In many cases it is difficult even for the ergonomist to compress the available knowledge into tables and charts. A computerised assistance system could be of great help

Ergonomics in industry takes many forms and a variety of techniques are applied for the data collection of ergonomic concerns. At the Rover Group (BMW) Swindon site, chosen shop floor associates are trained in the principles of ergonomics. They lead all ergonomic assessments with the full support of the local production manager known as the ABA plan owner. This Ergonomic “facilitator” uses an ergonomic assessment sheet known Associate job Analysis A.B.A. developed by BMW AG Germany. This takes the form of simple charts to store issues categorised as Red Amber or Green (RAG) concerns. It can effectively deal with local and departmental issues using an ergonomic approach. The author, who is the site ergonomist, will share results of the activities within their environment and explain the principles of Ergonomic Self-Reliance and the infrastructure that supports it.

Abstract: The ergonomic design aims to minimize the problems in the interface Human x Technology and for this, it is based on usability evaluation methodologies, which are applied during the development of product design. Among the iterfaces of ergonomic demand are the hand tools, which lack of usability can contribute to create biomechanics problems, discomfort and dissatisfaction in the user. Among these interfaces, there are the doorknobs and handle faucets, with frequency, the safety, efficiency, cmfort and effectiveness aren't considered, and the aesthetic and symbolic aspects area more valued. The variables os interest in this type of interface involves: the torque strengh, the gender and age. The aim of this study was the evaluation of torque strengh at different simulated hand activities by groups of adult Brazilian males and females of different age groups. This research evaluated 180 subjects (18-29 years = 30 masculino and 30 feminino; 30- 55 years = 30 masculino and 30 feminino; over 55 years = 30 masculino and 30 feminino); a torque transducer and other complementary tools were used for data collection. The methods and techniques applied were based on the biomedical and ethics recommendations. The data analysis was based on descriptive statistics and included the application of tests for verification of significant differences. Abstract:
This project was based on completion of an analysis of ergonomical problems with tattoo machines that exist on the market today, the generation of concepts to improve the situation, and the development of new concepts in the form of sketches, CAD models and physical models. The process began by completing a thorough market analysis. This was done via an information study, a customer survey in the form of a questionnaire that was sent to several tattoo artists, and a self-test in which two different tattoo machines were studied. The result of this analysis showed that the major ergonomic problems had to do with noise level, vibration level, machine weight and balance, poor grip ergonomics, and problems with cord control. These issues were then divided into problem focus areas, that is: tattoo machines (as to problems with noise, vibration and weight), grip, and cord control.Through an extensive concept-generation process, three different solutions were developed: a light-weight tattoo machine which decreases noise- and vibration-levels and made sanitization simple, a silicone grip which dampens vibrations and presents a comfortable and reusable alternative, and a silicone bracelet which reduces poor ergonomic effects on the wrist and eliminates frustration due to poor cord control. These three concepts were chosen due to the fact that they represented the best possible solutions to the ergonomic problems that were found during market research and because of their sales potential. They were then shown in the form of a presentation and physical model at the KEXPO exhibit.

Abstract:
In this study, using the methodology of action-research we analyze the implementation between 2007 and 2010 of a committee based on the approach of activity-oriented ergonomics. The objective of this committee was to improve workers health and working conditions, through the modification of policies and processes in a public teaching hospital of São Paulo state. This study aimed at identifying what factors facilitate and which ones hinder the implementation of a permanent committee for improvement of working conditions based on the activity-oriented ergonomics approach in a public health institution. In addition, it aimed at identifying what elements are necessary to ensure its permanence. To achieve these objectives, the present study was developed based on the theoretical background of activity-oriented ergonomics, epidemiological surveillance, and on researches performed on the implementation of ergonomics committees. The results demonstrate the importance of clearly defining the objectives and the role of the committee and its relations with other sectors of the institution. They also show the need for the committee to have decision making authority, to include the presence of senior executives but also of employees from the operational level in order to develop new processes and policies that take into account the real work activities. In this sense, it was highlighted the need for real ownership of the ergonomics approach from the highest levels of the institutions hierarchy in order to insert ergonomics criteria in the strategic lines of the institution. It was also shown the need to encourage employees through continuous feedback from activities already undertaken by the committee and the need for a clear and visible support from management. In this study, we also present an analysis of the institutions public and political nature and its influence on the implementation of the committee, the limits of this research and questions that we believe are relevant for future developments.

Abstract:
The paper describes current state of education and professional development of specialists in human factors and ergonomics in Russia. University education in Russia is regulated by the fixed list of specialities and by the State learning standards. Currently, there are four university specialities that can serve as “umbrella” for education of ergonomists, namely: “System Analysis and Control”, “Biotechnical Systems and Technologies”, “Psychology”, “Design”. Two Russian leading universities offer bachelor and master programs on ergonomics. Postgraduate ergonomics education is available in the form of training courses and courses for preparation of candidate or doctoral dissertation. Any dissertation must be attributed to one of the predetermined scientific specialities. The most relevant speciality is “Occupational psychology, engineering psychology, ergonomics”. Nearly half of all candidates and doctors of sciences who have defended research work on ergonomics have degree in technology, one third – in psychology. Currently, Russian ergonomics society is elaborating procedure for certification of professional ergonomists following the CREE (Centre for Registration of European Ergonomists) model. As a first step to this target, the Standard for certification of the specialists designing human-machine systems has been developed. This standard establishes three evaluation criteria concerning of applicant’s educational level, professional experience, and professional development and self-education.

Abstract:
In the era of Industry 5.0, prioritizing ergonomics in manufacturing systems is crucial. Assembly Line Balancing Problems (ALBPs) are integral to efficient manufacturing, optimizing lines to eliminate bottlenecks and enhance productivity. Recent developments emphasize Ergonomic ALBPs (Ergo-ALBPs) and the integration of Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) to address ergonomic risks. A research gap exists in applying ergonomic considerations in the design phase known as Ergo-ALDPs as corrective ergonomic interventions cost significantly more than preventive measures taken during the design phase. This study presents a novel approach, the fuzzy Ergo-ALDP, which extends the Ergo-ALBP to handle imprecise task times and ergonomic risks in the design phase. It introduces a fuzzy ergonomic expert system, utilizing fuzzy logic and Digital Human Modeling (DHM) to simulate worker interactions in assembly line optimization. The proposed fuzzy Ergo-ALDP addresses this gap with a constructive heuristic integrated with fuzzy logic, emphasizing feasibility. Our research introduces a unique fuzzy ergonomic assessment method to evaluate task, workstation, and assembly line ergonomics using an expert system. We validate this approach using one synthesized numerical instance. This research contributes to assembly line optimization, aligning with Industry 5.0's human-centric vision. The comprehensive fuzzy ergonomic assessment model bridges gaps and optimizes ALDPs under uncertainty, promising improvements in productivity, worker satisfaction, and operational efficiency. By addressing the intersection of ergonomics, uncertainty, and assembly line optimization, this paper significantly contributes to advancing the field and promoting a safer and more efficient manufacturing environment.

Abstract:
The volume of the online commerce market is growing steadily; however, the online store conversion remains at a fairly low level. One of the reasons for the low conversion rate of online stores is the lack of the ergonomic design. The interface expert assessment and usability testing allow identifying interface errors of existing sites. The methodology is proposed for testing the ergonomics of the graphical user web interface of online stores based on choosing alternatives and visual analytics. The methodology is based on combining expert assessment of user interfaces with usability testing throughout the design process. Expert assessment is a quick way to find the main ergonomic problems, which is recommended to be used at the stages of developing technical specification, prototyping and final testing. The expert assessment mechanism of ergonomics is improved based on interface checklists and visual analysis of results. Within each of the ergonomics criteria (speed, errors, subjective satisfaction, comprehensibility), uniquely defined characteristics are selected to evaluate the ergonomics of the online store interface. Each ergonomic characteristic is assigned a weighting coefficient that determines its importance. The degree and quality of implementing the characteristics on a 0 to 5 scale are taken into account. Acceptable test results are obtained for the peer review method of the online stores interfaces for comparing the interfaces of Eldorado, M.Video and DNS sites.

Abstract:
Construction is a physically demanding process, and its activities entail exposure to a range of health and safety (H&S) and ergonomics hazards and risks. Given the persistence of H&S and ergonomics hazards and risks, a quantitative study was conducted to interrogate the related issues and evolve a response. The quantitative study included members of the Association of Construction Health and Safety Management (ACHASM) who completed a self-administered questionnaire delivered per e-mail. The findings indicate: workers are exposed to ergonomic hazards and risks, which leads to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs); workers do report incidents; not all stakeholders are likely to be committed to H&S, and seven construction management factors impact H&S and ergonomics. Conclusions include: design hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA) and construction HIRA is ineffective; exposure to ergonomic hazards and risks results in MSDs; workers do not fear losing their jobs due to reporting incidents; construction H&S is not receiving the necessary and potential multi-stakeholder support, and contractors are not adequately resourcing H&S and ergonomics. Recommendations include: multi-stakeholder commitment to and support for H&S and ergonomics should be engendered commencing the client brief; designers should consider the impact of design, details, and specifications on construction H&S and ergonomics during the construction process and subsequent maintenance; contractors should adequately resource H&S and ergonomics at tender stage, and ensure that the requisite H&S systems, procedures, and protocols are implemented when construction commences, and workers should be empowered through HIRA training, and participation in H&S processes.

Abstract:
The ergonomic injuries and solutions have been extensively studied in the construction industry; however, the prevalence of work-related injuries, risky activities, and effective solutions in the transportation industry are not understood. This study aims to explore the prevalence of work-related injuries, risky activities, and potentially ergonomic solutions among transportation workers. The approach to this study included exploration of worker type, injury types, and activities of top concern through historical injury data and an online survey, and proposal and evaluation of ergonomic solutions through onsite observations and field experiments. Results from this study found that back injuries were the most common type of injury sustained. Performing lifting and pushing/pulling activities have caused the most injuries. Back exoskeletons and ergonomic handles were identified as potential solutions to help reduce the risk of injury. Additionally, higher platforms were also suggested to help prevent workers from being forced to perform activities by exerting their back excessively.
