Abstract:
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a widely used method for monitoring coatings because it can be done in situ and causes little damage to the coating. However, interpreting the impedance data from coatings in order to determine the state of the coating and its protective abilities is challenging. A modified version of the rapid electrochemical assessment of paint (REAP) equivalent circuit is developed here, along with a method to calculate the impedance of a circuit using matrix algebra. This new equivalent circuit and the calculation method are used to analyze EIS data obtained from a two-layer commercial organic coating system immersed in NaCl solutions with different concentrations and at different temperatures. The matrix calculation method is validated by comparing results obtained from commercial analysis software to this method for two different equivalent circuits, and the parameter values are nearly equal. Physics-based models of the equivalent circuit elements are derived and used to obtain both initial estimates for the regressions and physics-based constraints on the model parameters. These models are integrated into the regression procedure, and the corrected Akaike information criterion (AICc) is used to compare fits between the new circuit and classic equivalent circuits. The AICc values indicate the new circuit results in better fits than classic equivalent circuits used for coatings analysis.

Abstract:
Lymph vessels branch and interconnect in a manner similar to a complex electronic circuit. Accordingly, we have applied circuit analysis techniques to the analysis of lymphatic systems. A lymph vessel is cannulated and the "equivalent circuits" are determined for the parts of the vessel upstream and downstream of the site of cannulation. Each equivalent circuit consists of a single resistor in series with a single pressure source. A diode is included to represent the lymphatic valves. The lymph flow rate may be determined by calculating the flow in the circuits when they are connected to each other. This technique can be applied to larger lymph trunks that receive lymph from many tissues.

The corrosion of reinforcement has always been a problem to be solved in the field of architecture. In this paper, the corrosion characteristics of chromium alloy steel under different pH conditions are studied. The impedance characteristics and equivalent circuit are predicted by neural network model. First of all, in simulated pore solution with different pH values, the characteristics of Nyquist impedance spectroscopy of the whole chromium alloy under passivation stage and the damaged passivation film of reinforcing bars under initial corrosion stage have been found. Then, according to the difference of impedance characteristics under different pH values, different equivalent circuits have been established and [Formula: see text] values of different equivalent circuits under different chloride ion concentration have been calculated. By fitting the electrochemical parameters of the equivalent circuit with [Formula: see text] values, the equivalent circuit model which can be predicted by neural network has good consistency with the equivalent circuit which can be predicted by [Formula: see text] values.

There exists very strong duality in the Buck circuit with input LC filter, especially in the structure of circuit, the equivalent circuits and the waveforms of input and output parts. On the basis of a theoretical model established in our work, an experiment is conducted to validate the equivalent circuits of both input and output parts, as well as the waveforms of associated capacitors and inductors. By choosing appropriate component parameters, the experimental results confirm the predictions of the theoretical model proposed.

Full text
Abstract:
Split ring resonator (SRR) is a metamaterial structure which displays negative permeability values over a relatively small bandwidth around its magnetic resonance frequency. Unit SRR cells and arrays have been used in various novel applications including the design of miniaturized microwave devices and antennas. When the SRR arrays are combined with the arrays of conducting wires, left handed materials can be constructed with the unusual property of having negative valued effective refractive indices. In this thesis, unit cells and arrays of single-ring multiple-split type SRR structures are numerically analyzed by using Ansoft&rsquo
s HFSS software that is based on the finite elements method (FEM). Some of these structures are constructed over low-loss dielectric substrates and their complex scattering parameters are measured to verify the numerical simulation results. The major purpose of this study has been to establish equivalent circuit models to estimate the behavior of SRR structures in a simple and computationally efficient manner. For this purpose, individual single ring SRR cells with multiple splits are modeled by appropriate two-port RLC resonant circuits paying special attention to conductor and dielectric loss effects. Results obtained from these models are compared with the results of HFSS simulations which use either PEC/PMC (perfect electric conductor/perfect magnetic conductor) type or perfectly matched layer (PML) type boundary conditions. Interactions between the elements of SRR arrays such as the mutual inductance and capacitance effects as well as additional dielectric losses are also modeled by proper two-port equivalent circuits to describe the overall array behavior and to compute the associated transmission spectrum by simple MATLAB codes. Results of numerical HFSS simulations, equivalent circuit model computations and measurements are shown to be in good agreement.

Abstract:
Batteries have imparted momentum to the process of transition towards a green future. However, mass application of batteries is obstructed due to their explosive nature, a trait specific to Li-Ion batteries. To cater to an efficient battery utilization, an introduction of a battery management system would provide an ultimate solution. This thesis deals with different aspects crucial in designing a battery management system for high energy as well as high power applications. To build a battery management system capable of predicting battery behavior, it is necessary to analyze the dynamic processes happening inside the battery. Hence, a battery equivalent circuit model is proposed in this thesis as well as proper analysis is done in MATLAB to project a generic structure applicable to all Li-Ion chemistries. The model accounts for all dynamic characteristics of a battery including non-linear open circuit voltage, discharge current and capacity. Effect of temperature is also modeled using a cooling system. The model is validated with test current profiles. Less than 0.1% error between measured and simulated voltage profiles indicates the effectiveness of the proposed model to predict the runtime behavior of the battery. Furthermore, the model is implemented with the energy as well as the power battery pack. State of charge calculations are performed using the proposed model and the coulomb counting method and the results indicate only a 4% variance. Therefore, the proposed model can be applied to develop a real-time battery management system for accurate battery states estimation.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis includes the design, production and measurement of a wideband dualpolarized X-band aperture-coupled microstrip patch antenna. The wideband and dual-polarized operation is achieved through the use of H-shaped coupling slots. Therefore, the equivalent circuit modeling of a microstrip line fed H-shaped slot is also studied in this thesis. A step-by-step procedure is followed during the design process of the dual-polarized aperture-coupled microstrip antenna. First, an aperture-coupled microstrip antenna with a single rectangular slot, that exhibits a wideband characteristic for single polarization, is designed. Then, the design procedure is repeated for an antenna with H-shaped slot in order to satisfy the same specifications with a shorter slot. Finally, dual-polarized aperture-coupled microstrip antenna is designed. At this configuration, two H-shaped slots are used and they are placed orthogonal to each other. During the design process, the effects of antenna parameters on the input impedance characteristics of the antenna are investigated. These parametric analyses are done in CST Microwave Studio®
. The v designed dual-polarized wideband aperture-coupled microstrip antenna is manufactured. Simulation results and measurement results are compared. During the equivalent circuit modeling of an H-shaped slot fed by a microstrip line, an approach based on the reciprocity theorem is utilized. The method was originally proposed for rectangular shaped slots, in this thesis it is generalized for arbitrarily shaped slots. Software codes are developed in MATLAB to calculate the equivalent impedance of the slot.

Abstract:
This work presents the equivalent circuit model, ringing and overshoot characteristics, as well as the ability of a new magneto-static responsive structure (MRS) to achieve the recon gurabil- ity of a variable e ective permittivity structure (VEPS). Through the use of a static magnetic eld and micro-sized conductive magnetic particles, the MRS can be used to connect separate transmis- sion lines (TL) that operate up to a radio frequency of 5 GHz. The simulated and measured results show the MRS functions well compared to other switching methods. The VEPS's ability to achieve e ective permittivity recon gurability is also demonstrated, showing that the VEPS functions as the well-known mushroom structure when the MRSs are in the on state and as a regular TL when the MRSs are in the o state. Finally, several brief studies of the MRS are performed, including the activation methods, MRS geometry, di erent types of magnetic particles, and smaller embedded MRSs within the VEPS.

Abstract:
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is playing an increasingly significant role in fundamental and applied research: to study any type of solid and liquid materials (ionic, mixed, semiconductor, and insulators), to study charge transfer in heterogeneous systems, including phase boundaries, electrode boundaries, and elements of the microstructure. With the help of EIS, it is possible to study the behavior of chemical sensors, fuel cells, batteries, and corrosion processes. The base of the method stays on the principle of exciting any electrochemical system with a signal in the form of a sinusoidal wave and observing its behavior in response to this disturbance. This is the simplest method for determining the structural and transport functions of the system under study. This is the simplest method for determining the structural and transport functions of the system under study. The book discusses the theoretical foundations of the method of impedance spectroscopy, including the method of equivalent circuits, and provides examples of the analysis of impedance spectra for real objects. The main attention is paid to the model elements of equivalent circuits, their physical base, and the use of the models in the analysis of electrochemical systems. Handbook consists of seven chapters. It has questions and tasks to self-work after each part. It is intended for students of chemical, chemical-technological, and biomedical specialties, as well as for specialists engaged in research in the field of materials science, medicine, and ecology.

Abstract:
This handbook is aimed at helping users of PMTs who are faced with the challenge of designing sensitive light detectors for scientific and industrial purposes. The raison d’être for photomultipliers (PMTs) stems from four intrinsic attributes: large detection area, high, and noiseless gain, and wide bandwidth. Detection involves a conversion process from photons to photoelectrons at the photocathode. Photoelectrons are subsequently collected and increased in number by the action of an incorporated electron multiplier. Photon detection, charge multiplication, and many PMT applications are statistical in nature. For this reason appropriate statistical treatments are provided and derived from first principles. PMTs are characterized by a range of photocathodes offering detection over UV to infra-red wavelengths, the sensitivities of which can be calibrated by National Laboratories. The optical interface between light sources and PMTs, particularly for diffuse or uncollimated light, is sparsely covered in the scientific literature. The theory of light guides, Winston cones, and other light concentrators points to means for optimizing light collection subject to the constraints of Liouville’s theorem (étandue). Certain PMTs can detect single photons but are restricted by the limitations of unwanted background ranging in magnitude from a fraction of a photoelectron equivalent to hundreds of photoelectrons. These sources, together with their correlated nature, are examined in detail. Photomultiplier biasing requires a voltage divider comprising a series of resistors or active components, such as FETs. Correct biasing provides the key to linear operation and so considerable attention is given to the treatment of this topic. Electronic circuits and modules that perform the functions of charge to voltage conversion, pulse shaping, and impedance matching are analysed in detail.

Abstract:
AbstractHydraulic impedance, as an efficient frequency-domain analysis alternative, has been widely utilized in hydraulic transient analysis for decades. Since the mathematical expressions of hydraulic systems with complicated pipe networks are usually rather complex, it is difficult for the traditional continuous impedance method to obtain the analytical solutions to the system’s frequency responses directly. Therefore, an equivalent circuit modeling-based discrete impedance method is proposed to mathematically express the hydraulic systems of a pumped storage plant system with complicated pipe networks. Through drawing an analogy between various hydraulic facilities and different types of electrical circuits, the equivalent circuit topology of any hydraulic system can be obtained according to the circuit theory in electrical engineering. The oscillation analysis of the pumped-storage power plant is conducted, and influences of the pump-turbine impedance on the system’s oscillation characteristics have been discussed.

Abstract:
AbstractLogic locking was designed to be a formidable barrier to IP piracy: given a logic design, logic locking modifies the logic design such that the circuit operates correctly only if operated with the “correct” secret key. However, strong attacks (like SAT-based attacks) soon exposed the weakness of this defense. Stripped functionality logic locking (SFLL) was recently proposed as a strong variant of logic locking. SFLL was designed to be resilient against SAT attacks, which was the bane of conventional logic locking techniques. However, all SFLL-protected designs share certain “circuit patterns” that expose them to new attacks that employ structural analysis of the locked circuits. In this work, we propose a new methodology—Structurally Robust SFLL ($$\mathcal{S}\mathcal{R}$$ S R -SFLL)—that uses the power of modern satisfiability and synthesis engines to produce semantically equivalent circuits that are resilient against such structural attacks. On our benchmarks, $$\mathcal{S}\mathcal{R}$$ S R -SFLL was able to defend all circuit instances against both structural and SAT attacks, while all of them were broken when defended using SFLL. Further, we show that designing such defenses is challenging: we design a variant of our proposal, $$\mathcal{S}\mathcal{R}$$ S R -SFLL(0), that is also robust against existing structural attacks but succumbs to a new attack, SyntAk (also proposed in this work). SyntAk uses synthesis technology to compile $$\mathcal{S}\mathcal{R}$$ S R -SFLL(0) locked circuits into semantically equivalent variants that have structural vulnerabilities. $$\mathcal{S}\mathcal{R}$$ S R -SFLL, however, remains resilient to SyntAk.
