Abstract:
The monograph is devoted to computational aspects of photogrammetric reconstruction of narrow-angle bundles of projecting beams that existed during the survey. Methods of improving the conditionality of systems of linear equations, ensuring the convergence of iterative refinement of their roots, increasing the stability of calculations in finite precision machine arithmetic are considered. The main efforts are focused on solving the problem of establishing reliable measurement weights within the framework of the least squares method. The criteria for the reliability of the weights are determined. Algorithms have been developed for matching the initial values of the measurement weights, adjusting the weights during equalization, and identifying insignificant parameters of mathematical measurement models. A new method for evaluating the accuracy of the equalization results has been developed. For specialists engaged in the processing of remote sensing data of the Earth and mathematical processing of the results of heterogeneous measurements using weighted methods of statistical estimation of the parameters of functional dependencies.

Abstract:
Within the Jaina tradition, the ideal and most celebrated death is a voluntary, fully conscious fast which aims to “scratch out the body” for the sake of the soul. Called sallekhanā, the fast is understood to be the pinnacle of nonviolence, because it entails the complete eradication of the passions that are the root cause of violence. But above all, sallekhanā is understood by Jains to be heroic; it is the ultimate culmination of a courageous life dedicated to the soul’s emancipation from the cycle of birth and death. The equation of sallekhanā with heroism is an ancient one in the Jain imagination, and continues to govern the way in which the religious death is understood and practiced by Jains in the early twenty-first century. This chapter explores the central role that heroism plays within the ritual fast to death and, more fundamentally, within the Jain tradition.

Abstract:
Symplectic topology has a long history. It has its roots in classical mechanics and geometric optics and in its modern guise has many connections to other fields of mathematics and theoretical physics ranging from dynamical systems, low-dimensional topology, algebraic and complex geometry, representation theory, and homological algebra, to classical and quantum mechanics, string theory, and mirror symmetry. One of the origins of the subject is the study of the equations of motion arising from the Euler–Lagrange equations of a one-dimensional variational problem. The Hamiltonian formalism arising from a Legendre transformation leads to the notion of a ...

Hicken, Allen. Party Systems and the Politics of Development. Edited by Carol Lancaster and Nicolas van de Walle. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199845156.013.28.

Abstract:
This article examines the correlation between economic development and the party system. More specifically, it considers the extent to which certain features of the party system should be included on the right-hand side of development regression equations, or whether the party system should be taken into account when selecting cases for a qualitative study of development. The chapter first outlines some necessary conditions for economic development, with particular emphasis on those conditions with roots in policy-making and actor agency. It then discusses three dimensions of the party system—the number of political parties, nationalization, and institutionalization—and whether they help shape the incentives and capabilities of policy-makers to adopt policies that promote development.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the numerous applications of numerical quadrature (integration) in classical mechanics, in semiclassical approaches to quantum mechanics, and in statistical mechanics; and then describes several ways of implementing integration in C++, for both proper and improper integrals. Various algorithms are described and analyzed, including simple classical quadrature algorithms as well as those enhanced with speedups and convergence tests. Classical orthogonal polynomials, whose properties are reviewed, are the basis of a sophisticated technique known as Gaussian integration. Practical implementations require the roots of these polynomials, so an algorithm for finding them from three-term recurrence relations is presented. On the computational side, the concept of polymorphism is introduced and exploited (prior to the detailed treatment later in the text). The nondimensionalization of physical problems, which is a common and important means of simplifying a problem, is discussed using Compton scattering and the Schrödinger equation as an example.

Full text
Abstract:
The concluding chapter takes up what it sees to be some of the major unresolved issues of Partition politics. While it tries to trace the roots of the violence centred around land in several areas of Assam, especially in the Bodo-inhabited region, it shows how issues such as the controversy over the cut-off year for immigrants to acquire citizenship are carry-overs from Partition days. Other major issues that are discussed include the status of Hindu refugees/displaced persons in the state, the National Register of Citizens, and the larger question of language and Assamese identity. It shows how with the new wave of immigrants being assimilated into the Assamese nationality, its transformation is underway and how this transformation itself throws up new challenges and equations.

Lighton, John R. B. Measuring Metabolic Rates. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198830399.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Measuring Metabolic Rates demystifies the field of metabolic rate measurement, explaining every common variation of the art, from century-old manometric methods through ingenious syringe-based techniques, direct calorimetry, aquatic respirometry, stable-isotope metabolic measurement, and every type of flow-through respirometry. Each variation is described in enough detail to allow it to be applied in practice. Special chapters are devoted to metabolic phenotyping and human metabolic measurement, including room calorimetry. Background information on different analyzer and equipment types allows users to choose the best instruments for their application. Respirometry equations—normally a topic of terror and confusion to researchers—are derived and described in enough detail to make their selection and use effortless. Tools and skills—many of them open source—that will amplify the innovative researcher’s capabilities are described. Vital topics such as manual and automated baselining, implementing multi-animal systems, common pitfalls, and the correct analysis and presentation of metabolic data are covered in enough detail to turn a respirometry neophyte into a hardened metabolic warrior, ready to take on the task of publication in peer-reviewed journals with confidence.

Mulmi, Amish Raj. All Roads Lead North. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197645994.001.0001.

Abstract:
During the June 2020 territorial dispute over Kalapani, India blamed tensions on a newly assertive Nepal’s deepening relations with China. But beyond the accusations and grandstanding, this reflects a new reality: the power equations in South Asia have been redrawn, to make space for China. Nepal did not turn northwards overnight. Its ties with China have deep historical roots built on Buddhism, dating to the early first millennium. While India’s unofficial 2015 blockade provided momentum to the rift with Delhi, Nepal has long wanted deeper ties with Beijing, to counteract India’s oppressive intimacy. With China’s growing South Asian and global ambitions, Nepal now has a new primary bilateral partner--and Nepalis are forging a path towards modernity with its help, both in the remote borderlands and in the cities. All Roads Lead North offers a long view of Nepal’s foreign relations, today underpinned by China’s world-power status. Sharing never-before-told stories about Tibetan guerrilla fighters, failed coup leaders and trans-Himalayan traders, Nepal analyst Amish Raj Mulmi examines the histories binding mountain communities together across the Sino-Nepali border. Part history, part journalistic account, Mulmi's is a complex, compelling and rigorously researched study of a small country caught between two neighbourhood giants.
