Abstract:

Abstract:
Though the obvious understanding of Thomas More’s Epigrammata, initially published with the 1518 edition of Utopia, is that of the poetic portfolio of a rising statesman, the intensity of the proceeding dispute with the French poet Brixius indicates a significance beyond the poems at hand. As his letter in response to Brixius explains, More writes with a particular concern for the plight of poetry and the character of the poet. Though he criticizes Brixius for cheap imitation of the ancients, he adapts and composes lines capable of containing both the mockery and the moralizing of his Latin and Greek predecessors. While it is undoubtedly More’s wit that commends his collection to his contemporaries, it is his commitment to truth that proves transformative in the development of the Renaissance epigram. These often-neglected poems and their commitment to laughter and learning may inform our understanding of the author and his ever-celebrated works.

An interesting original edition has been discovered in the Bologna Library, containing the Progymnasmata Thomae Mori et Guilielmi Lilii. These Progymnasmata open with the Epigrammata clarissimi disertissimique viri Thomae Mori Britanni, pleraque e Graecis versa which were integrated in Thomas More’s De optimo reipublicae statu deque nova insula Utopia from the Basel editions of 1518 and 1520 (princeps 1516: Libellus vere aureus nec minus salutaris quam festiuus de optimo reip. statu, deque nova insula Utopiae, [Lovanii], Arte Th. Martini, 1516). The pages containing the Progymnasmata also contain a copy of a 1518 edition of Utopia owned by the Bolognese Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522–1605) which was incorporated into the volume of the University of Bologna Library referenced A.V. Tab.I.H.I. 33/1-3. On this excerptum (today referenced A.V. Tab.I.H.I. 33/2) an ancient anonymous hand has written a few very interesting marginalia. Their analysis allows us to propose new hypotheses concerning the Progymnasmata, their origin and the entourage of the More family.

Abstract:
AbstractMartial's epigrams 9.43 and 44 on a statuette of Hercules owned by the patron Novius Vindex (also mentioned in Statius Silv. 4.6) have usually been read as historical documents which tell us something about Martial's relationship with Statius and about patronage in the age of Domitian. In the Epigrammaton liber nonus, however, there are two more pairs of epigrams and three single poems which, like 9.43 and 44, talk of statues or statuettes (9. ep. ; 23/24; 50; 64/65; 101). These poems on contemporary and ancient works of art play an important role in the arrangement of the book in that they divide the liber into sections which thematically differ from each other. In these sections Martial presents and contrasts different qualities of his epigrammatic oeuvre and shows how even the lowest genre of poetry can serve as panegyric literature for the sublime emperor Domitian. It has become common practice to dissect the Epigrammaton libri into individual pieces and to use them as mines of information about life in antiquity in general and about Martial's life in particular. We should not, however, neglect the context of Martial's epigrams: the Epigrammaton libri.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
The structural formation of Martial's books of epigrams, especially what has been termed the intratextuality of the poems in each volume, has received considerable attention in recent studies of the author. Both Scherf and Merli, for example, in the latest collection of essays on Martial, not only provide useful critical surveys of past scholarship on the issue but propose their own, occasionally more detailed, schemes. The result is a growing recognition of the intricate designs Martial created out of his varied themes and of their importance in helping us to understand the literary purpose of the books.

AbstractThe Epigramma Paulini is a late antique Gallo-Roman poem of uncertain authorship which contains a dialogue structured on the model of the first Vergilian Eclogue. It is an unusual pastoral poem as it blends pastoral with satire. Recent scholarship has focused on the way the author of the Epigramma Paulini adapts the Vergilian model to suit his Christian message. The aim of this paper is to explore more fully the satirical section of the poem and, in particular, the lines focusing on Roman vices which contain a striking attenuation of the topos of misogyny. I seek to show through verbal and thematic similarities that the model for this part of the poem is the Hamartigenia of Prudentius.

Abstract:
Summary In this article I will apply an intertextual perspective to a selection of epigrams from the Greek Anthology in order to assess the role of variation within these epigrams. Within the tradition of the literary epigram, the element of variation had always been important, yet some Hellenistic and Imperial epigrammatists, such as Archias and Zosimus, took this dimension of the genre to extremes, in creating strings of epigrams which intentionally vary on their Imperial models and on their Imperial models´ Hellenistic models. This article charts some of these epigrammatic ‘chain reactions’: the poems on the three hunting brothers Damis, Clitor and Pigres, the birthday epigrams of Leonides of Alexandria, the epigrams on the shipwrecked Antheus, and several epigrams on ships that were destroyed prematurely. All serve to assess the way in which intertextual processes develop within the epigrammatic tradition, and to show that such a perspective is essential to their appreciation.

Forster put it, connects “the prose and the passion.” I deploy lessons learned in this process to identify and face what I believe to be crucial challenges to science and to freedom (as defended by, among others, Cicero, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Thomas Hobbes, John Stuart Mill, and Bertrand Russell). Finally I consider threats to freedom of a different sort, posed by the creation and dissemination of “alternative facts” and by what is sometimes called “super” or “full” artificial intelligence (AI).

Abstract:
One-third of the world’s population harbours the latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) with a lifetime risk of reactivation. Although, the treatment of LTBI relies significantly on the first-line therapy, identification of novel drug targets and therapies are the emerging focus for researchers across the globe. The current review provides an insight into the infection, diagnostic methods and epigrammatic explanations of potential molecular targets of dormant phase bacilli. This study also includes current preclinical and clinical aspects of tubercular infections and new approaches in antitubercular drug discovery.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Cancer is a relatively common disease that affects millions of people worldwide. Although cancer itself has been highly researched, discovering a cure for cancer remains a challenge, primarily because the causes of this disease are not entirely understood. It can arise from mutations and epigenetic alterations that go on to activate oncogenes and inactivate tumour suppressor genes. The cells that drive cancer formation proliferate in an uncontrolled manner and originate from various pathways, which have been highlighted in this review. Briefly, cancer stem cells can arise from three different scenarios: a) a stem cell undergoes mutation, b) the progenitor cell undergoes several mutations and c) an already differentiated cell re-differentiates due to mutation to drive it back to a stem cell-like state.

Abstract:
Although literature and poetry have numerous borders of their own, these are rarely assumed to have any significance for the world out-side the text itself. A number of reasons for this distinctive division certainly stem from the literary field itself. This paper intends to indicate the exclusivist stance of some theories of literature, and the inclucivist of others, before exploring the possibilities of bridging between borders in text and territory by reference to the life and literature of Oscar Wilde and a performative and imaginative analysis of Paul Muldoon's epigrammatic poem The Plot.

Abstract This paper considers once more Mart. 11.104 and its use of mythological examples in 11.104.13–16. The paper focuses particularly on the significance of the audience of a group of slaves, an embellishment of the mythological examples peculiar to Martial, and uses this addition as a stepping‐stone for a metapoetic reading. Through the reconfiguration of the mythological examples themselves and through the addition of an audience, Martial not only distinguishes his own epigrammatic text from his elegiac and epic intertexts but also reflects on the aims and workings of especially Ovidian elegy.

Abstract:
AbstractBuilding on research in recent years that emphasizes the cross-fertilization of ideas in epinician poetry and epigrammatic dedications, this article examines the poetics of a single victory epigram for a victory with a men’s chorus at Athens in the first quarter of the fifth century BC. The epinikian strategies that contribute to the poet’s self-presentation in this epigram are revealed by comparative evidence from epinician song and ritual dedication. Furthermore, an underlying paradox between agonistic and dedicatory modes of thought is revealed through ambiguities of expression, evidenced also in Homeric and later poetry.

IN Concluding the Editor's Foreword to the 1950 Edition of D. O. Fagunwa's First Novel, the Classic Ogboju Ode Ninu Igbo Irunmale, L. Murby spoke generally of the three novels the Yoruba author had published by then:[I]n their treatment of character and story, in their use of myth and legend and allegory, and in their proverbial and epigrammatic language [the novels] bear definite resemblances to the Odyssey and Beowulf and the early medieval romances on the one hand, and on the other hand to that great cornerstone of the English novel, Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress.
