Mejri, Mohamed. "Le Comportement environnemental des entreprises industrielles tunisiennes : typologie et déterminants." Littoral, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008DUNK0193.
Full textThis thesis is a first exploration of the corporate environmental behaviour of the Tunisian corporations. A survey of a sample of 70 Tunisian industrial firms permitted to put in evidence three types of enterprises reacting differently to the environmental issues, “the passive-opportunist” firms, the “conventionalist” firms and the “avant-gardist” firms. The governemental pressures, consumers’ ecological awareness and the ethical and environmental responsabilities are the main antecedents of the corporate environmental behaviour

Full textDue to the increasing pressures being placed on the environment, firms and industries are being encouraged by all the socio-economic actors (government, consumers, shareholders, ecological's associations and the general public,. . . ) to modify their market's approach. The both desirable and inevitable inclusion of environmental factors into business will obviously also have an impact on corporate management policies. Because these factors touch all the variables in management. Some of them are synonymous of constraints due to costs : new technologies in production processes, risk management, human resources management,. . . The others are sources of opportunities : a good strategic environmental management policy and appropriated policies of the marketing-mix (product, communication, price, and distribution) can also reduce these costs and enhance market expediencies. An effective response to the environmental challenge requires both a global, sustainable and long term strategic management approach from firms and industries

Full textThis thesis deals with the Green Management that concerns food and health companies as much as the companies that operates in conjunction with the environment. In this field, which acquires today great importance with all the problems of food, respect for nature and respect for the human; the problems are endless and the entire planet is facing challenges like no other since the beginning of the great civilizations. Starting with hunger, conflict, pollution, and depletion of natural resources, the problems appear almost insurmountable. We tried throughout this work to know what a managerial approach can provide and examined three major fields of management. The general approach concerning the laws, guidelines and provisions implemented at international and national levels. The financial approach on how to charge the commitment of the companies whether it is related to the food or simply to environmental issues, this is at the level of accounting and evaluation that mostly contribute to the knowledge of financial information systems of the companies and the marketing approach that requests here, more than elsewhere probably, to approach the question of the media and advertising organizations pressures, in order not to appoint others, who find some privileged lands to create rash and purely epidermal reactions where the common consumers or even other companies are forced to adopt often expensive measures when they are not harmful

Full textIn this doctoral research, we investigate how corporate environmental management (CEM) is taken in account in lending decision-making of banks to corporations in Europe and China. We also identify motivational factors and barriers of including CEM into bank lending. Our thesis is based on three empirical papers. In the first paper, we establish a 20-item evaluation framework of 50 banks in Europe between 2016 and 2018. We also explore how stakeholder power and banks’ characteristics influence banks’ level of CEM inclusion in lending. The second paper explores the perception of CEM in the lending business from the lenders’ perspective with a survey of 110 bank managers in France and Luxembourg in 2019. In addition, the study examines the influence of institutional motivations on bank managers’ perception of CEM. In the third paper, we focus on clarifying the difficulties associated with green credit implementation by investigating 240 Chinese bank managers in 2019. This study identifies challenges Chinese banks currently face according to their different ownership structures. We argue in this thesis that banks, as capital providers to corporations, can play a central role in influencing the decisions of borrowing corporations to reduce their impact on the environment if banks consider including CEM into their lending decision-making

Full textThe current research aims to conceive, develop and experiment a tool to measure performance in environmental management systems (EMS). Although different tools already exist, they differ from one company to another depending on contingencies (their environment being different), are difficult (and sometimes impossible) to apply from one firm to another and prevent from making inter-firms (or inter-sites within the same company) comparisons between different EMS. The contribution of the modelling and engineering approach developed in this thesis lies in the formalisation of a new method of measurement of performance in EMS based on the improvement of the measure of regulatory compliance in companies. This specific method leads to the introduction of an operational tool aiming to be used by all companies, whatever their structures (centralised or decentralised over different sites), their activity, their amount of employees, etc. This tool offers to measure the EMS performance, in a continuous perspective of improvement, through its key dimensions, and in particular through, the mastering of regulatory (normative and internal) compliance, the environmental analysis and the elaboration of a planning for proactive andcorrective actions as well as the follow-up of its implementation. Overall, the novelty of this approach results from the particular emphasise put on interrelations existing between those different dimensions in order to enhance standard systems of performance measurement

Full textThe State missed a long time the management relationship of economy and law with the environment. Under the increasing pressure of a national and international mobilization and due to the increase of problems involving environment, several regulatory and economic measures in favor of the environmental protection were adopted by the whole of the Western countries. Initially, the public authorities started to worry about the general state of the environment and set up legislation, which intend to fight the insufficiencies of social equity and environmental concerns. Then, in response to a regulatory step, considered to be too constraining by the private actors, the State formulate a set of economic tools, reconciling society waits and companies’ development competitiveness objectives. Lastly, with the relative effectiveness of the various regulatory economic and environmental protection instruments, known as traditional, the State gradually transferred its responsibilities to the private actors by betting on the co-regulation and self-regulation. Our empirical work concerns the law impact on the new economic regulations (NRE) on the behavior of the companies concerning environmental reporting. The narrative contents of of the CAC 40 companies reports SD/CSR, is the object of our study. Our analysis will be led by two complementary approaches: a statistical and lexical analysis and an analysis set of themes, both, carried out using a textual analysis software, “Alceste”

Full textThe increasing societal awareness and the intensification of the regulation make henceforth strategic environmental issues for pollutant sites. Included within the scope of the CSR, this thesis aims to understand the management decision of environmental risks within risky sites located in French densely populated coastal areas. It analyses the ways of evaluating, managing and communicating about environmental risks, also called “industrialo-environmental risks” (IER), and identifies motivations and difficulties of these actions as described by managers. The research is based on a multidisciplinary theoretical framework: the work on the individual decision under risk, the stakeholder theory, and the neo-institutionalism. The research methodology is divided into two times: a qualitative study of 19 interviews with textual analysis, and a survey of 196 sites by questionnaire. Results emphasize that, despite a collective awareness of environmental issues, IER have been significantly managed since only a decade. If regulatory stakeholders and leaders' values primarily guide risky sites towards a more "responsible" management, the complexity of regulation and the lack of information explain the slowing of environmental initiatives (EMS, EMAS eco-audit, partnerships). The surveyed sites adopt reactive approaches of regulatory compliance. Costs, lack of human and financial resources, and the low perception of the immediate benefits are considered as barriers to the pursuit of more ambitious environmental activities. Thus, the IER management appears more as a way to legitimize and sustain activities as an economic advantage

Full textSince the 80s , companies in developed countries are facing with competition increasingly sharp . In this context, the adoption of lean management has become widespread. It aims to speed up the flow , to reduce non- value added , as part of a continuous improvement process. Moreover, since the 90s , sustainable development is a growing interest . Social responsibility (CSR) is the business contribution to sustainable development issues. The approach is for companies to take into account the social and environmental impacts of their business to adopt the best practices and contribute to the improvement of society and the protection of the environment. This study positions the integration Lean Green serving a strategy Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) . A first strategic Lean Green model gives a structured framework for targeted scientific developments, prioritizing a particular performance. Segmentation according to the impacted (social, economic) major performance beyond environmental performance and the scope (internal / external to the company) , is proposed. Four strategies emerge then : eco-efficiency , eco-responsibility , eco-partnership , eco- solidarity. Each strategy responds to specific stakeholders of the company. For eco-efficiency, a quantitative study (design of experiment) prioritizes the factors affecting the minimization of waste in production and demonstrates the value of combining the two methods : the Lean "7 muda " and the Green 3Rs hierarchy ( reduce, Reuse, Recycle). Operating a "matrix Lean 3R " is desirable. For eco-responsibility, a model of Visual Management of Eco-Performance (VMEP), evaluated qualitatively (intervention research) improves an index of motivation. It is revealed that the integration of environmental considerations into the animation of economic performance , is in favor of improving

Full textConstant growth of urban population and property pressure tend to speed up real properties renewal. In building and civil engineering, buildings deconstruction is increasing. It produces 39.2 million tons of waste per year in France. However, only 45 % of waste are recovered. The European and French objective of 70 % recovery rate is not reached. In order to improve deconstruction waste management, this thesis studied two subjects. The first subject was for a better environmental assessment of a deconstruction strategy. To resolve this issue, we propose a double approach, with greenhouse gases (GHG) emission and life cycle analysis (LCA). It is relevant to consider waste management and deconstruction works together, because of their complementarity, whereas other existing tools often study only one of these two sides. The second subject was for deconstruction strategies optimization with operational (cost and delays) and environmental (recovery rate and impacts by GHG emissions or LCA) objectives. A Multi-Objective Optimization model is suggested with a metaheuristic resolution. The model application on study cases showed the model capacity to offer strategies that are well balanced between the objectives and that can be directly applied

Full textAlthough the literature presents many works that analyze the Environmetal management system (EMS) at the organization level, very few focus on the quality of integration of this system (all integrated environmental practices), quality analyzed through the factors that influence it and also characterizes the organization's orientation to environmental issues. The main purpose of the doctoral theses it's to elaborate various quantitative and qualitative methodologies, methods and work tools to improve implementation, integration ans functioning process that define the Environmental Management System at the organizational level. In order to achieve the intended purpose of theses, it was conducted a research, based on questionnaire method, with a sample of over 70 organizations mainly industrial organization from N-E of Romania, at the level of 178 managers. Most important practical and theoretical contributions made, are: (1) clarification and the synthesis of the most important potential factors tant have a general character unaniously valid for any organization, factors that may act as a " barriers " in the implementing process of an Enviromental managmenent system; (2) development and proposal of EMS theoretical model - in accordance with ISO 14001, as a complex process; this scientific approach is unique and original in the specialized littrature level consulted; (3) development of a conceptual framework ans a coherent research methodologies that allow quantitative and qualitative study of the relationship between the organization orientation in environmental management issues and EMS implementation quality; (4) Development of a systematic model to improve environmental decision making process; (5) development of an investigation methodology of the environmental knowledge system importance due to its influence on the quality of the environmental decision and of a simple method to quantify the importance level of this system; (6) development of models showing: (a) architecture of all influences between variables that describe the organization's orientation regarding environmental management and variables that describe EMS implementation and integration quality under certain conditions; (b) estimation of correlations between organization's orientation synthetic variable/ global that defines EMS implementation/ integration quality; (7) proposal and development of practical solutions to improve the quality of EMS implementation and integration at N-E Romania organizations level; (8) development of a conceptual framework and a coherent research methodology, that allow possibility to evaluate improvement of EMS implementation and operation quality by transforming and adapting its architecture based on fractal philosophy paradigm

Full textSignificant industrial development, strong population growth, intensive urbanization, expansion of road, air and sea transports are all factors that contribute to the exhaustion of natural resources, land and climate change. The combination of the 3 strategic pillars of sustainable development : environment, economy and social, in the deployment of complementary policies contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gases emissions and environmental impacts. The standardization of the sustainable development principles is difficult to implement. It depends on the context of a the studied country or territory. The ecological and energy transition requires a eco-mangement frame of reference adapted to the specificities and stakes of the concerned territories. This work contributes to the development of a surburban site in a tropical islandenvironment, around activities in the primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors. In this context, several analysis tools have been developed to meet the requirements of an eco-management scheme, including technical and environmental analyzes and the overall evaluation of an eco-management scheme. These tools provide local and regional actors to analyze the environmental impacts of a project and to evaluate different development alternatives. In addition to the decision-supporttools, a methodological approach is proposed in this thesis, based on the systemic and typological approaches and the ISO 14044 normative framework relating to Life Cycle Assessment

Full textFor industrial manufacturing, the integration of ecological and social aspects with economic considerations has more importance in managerial decision making of the enterprise. This importance will be in terms of products and services that the manufacturer offers and in terms of the processes that the manufacturer deploys. Under this reality, an ecological performance has an important role in the efficiency and traditional performance measures of a manufacturing system. Consequently, the manufacturing system will use their operational strategies to solve and find the solutions of production and maintenance problem by adapting to the random conditions and constraints of the market, and by collaborating, even while integrating environmental concerns. Concerning the environmental aspect (industrial discharges, pollutant emissions...) and its influence on the production and maintenance problem in a dynamic stochastic context is ignored in the literature. However, the main problem for manufacturing system is to minimize the production and maintenance costs through the best management but at the same time meets the environmental requirements regulated increasingly by the majority of industrialized countries. In this context, many researches were carried out in industrial field dealing with joint production and maintenance planning optimization as a solution facing to the constraints imposed by the environmental requirements in the manufacturing system management and the ambiguity for consideration of harmful emissions in the industry. Such an optimization may be more efficient when calling the subcontracting in order to minimize the total production, maintenance and harmful emissions cost. The different literature works have showed the different strategies of controlling manufacturing systems but the consideration of the integration of environmental aspects on an optimisation problem of manufacturing system remains an open problem which shows that the combination between the economic efficiency and the ecological aspects has become a necessity. In the light of this reality, the work of this thesis will provide decision makers with manufacturing strategies that integrate both economic and ecological aspect. Thus, a stochastic optimal forecasting production and maintenance control problem of a manufacturing system emitting toxins is considered. The goal is to develop an ecological optimization for production and maintenance strategy in order to determine an economical production planning, an optimal maintenance strategy and emissions penalty, based on subcontractor solution and taking into account that the failure rate of principal machine is correlated with the production

Full textFirms reduce their environmental impacts thanks to a series of environmental assessment tools such as LCA and Bilan Carbone (the latter being a specific form of carbon footprint assessment tool). which are supposed to act as decision support tools. However, even if these tools are widely spread among companies, the question of their performativity, or the way they effectively change managerial practice, remains. In other words several of these assessment tools do not become ipso facto management instruments. Research on environmental sciences link the difficulties of assessment tools appropriation to the tools' inherent properties (ergonomics, scientific models' robustness) and are subject to a to constant revision work. In this thesis, we explore the organisational and cognitive dimensions of this appropriation; in particular the emergence of epistemic and practice communities structured around the instruments, which constitute a receptive environment for their deployment.Based on a field work in an environmental consultancy agency, this thesis examines for six empirical case studies the process and the conditions under which the instruments trigger a sustained collective action. Beyond the basic instrument level, we study the features that are implemented in the course of collective actions and their unexpected effects. This research project highlights the existence of a variety elaborate devices, which affect firms learning capabilities. The characterisation of these devices helps identifying new managerial figures and intermediate communities, integrated to a greater or lesser extent to the company, playing a key role in the dynamics of collective action

Full textMost of the work focusing on the evolution of Business Models (BM) focuses on internal factors such as the manager's strategic choices in terms of customers, activities or resources. External or environmental factors as determinants in the evolution of BM remain largely unexplored. The conception of the environment commonly accepted in BM approaches considers that the latter is produced by the thinking and actions of leaders rather than being imposed on them. Starting from a review of the literature focusing on the BM component approach as an analytical framework and more particularly the RCOV model (Warnier, Lecocq and Demil, 2006) and dynamic capacities (Teece, 2007, 2017), this contribution proposes to deal with the influence of an institutional environmental variable, namely international accreditations (EQUIS, AACSB) on a French management school, Burgundy School of Business. By integrating an environment variable through dynamic capacities, we propose to enrich this RCOV model with new analysis proposals not only in the BM components but also in the possible interactions between the different components. To validate our proposals and feed our theoretical framework which seeks to integrate the environment-accreditation variable in the RCOV model, we propose to carry out an exploratory case study on BSB (Burgundy School of Business) which saw its BM transform following the rise in power accreditations. All components of the school's BM have been impacted by international accreditations. We thus rehabilitate the driving role of the environment by highlighting the development of a dynamic capacity of accreditation in the evolution or even the transformation of the BM of companies and seek to characterize the BM of the company on the basis of modifications components

Full textTo answer environmental challenge and create new competitive advantages, the companies needto consider and integrate environmental considerations into all its processes. Numerous environmentalmethods exist as well as solutions to integrate them into companies. But, the literature review realisedindicates that a systemic approach combining strategic and practical needs from eco-design couldfacilitate this integration. This thesis, which represents the "tactic" module of the national research project ANR- Convergence, aims to provide a new framework to identify a suitable operational trajectory for a better integration ofenvironmental consideration in companies. Thus, a clear analysis about the identification of theseexisting methods and their interrelationships was realised. Our work was to identify the operativecorrelation between methods via a cartography, then the relationship between those methods and thedynamic needs/contexts of companies to finally propose ” environmental roadmaps. So, we finallypropose a systematic approach to define environmental roadmaps in companies. Those roadmapsconcern the strategis, tactic and operational levels in companies. The results of three academic/industrial experiments demonstrate that all proposals of this thesis couldensure effectively the identification of a suitable systemic trajectories’ group based on actual corporateneeds and its dynamic context. The pre-defined chain of action and the list of available tools providedsupport the company to identify the working process and to organize the workflow between differentcorporate functions

Full textThrough the analysis of controversies, our sociological research articulates two case studies on the subject of the use of the “concertation” on the basis of the uranium mine monitoring: La Commanderie (Vendée/Deux-Sèvres) and Pen Ar ran (Loire-Atlantique). These two former uranium mines present two different configurations. In a first line of research, we are interested in the configuration of actors in an instance of “concertation”: comité de Mallièvre (La Commanderie). We present the “constraint network” which prevent the environmental associations from fully participating. The second line of research questions the usefulness of the concept of "collective construction" to better understand the foundations of the consultation. The third line of research leads us to observe a form non-established "collective construction": in Piriac-sur-Mer, a "community of knowledge" emerges as a result of the creation of the group of associations “Stop radioactivity”. In contrast, consultation takes place in the arguments, as a demand for "legitimation of knowledge"

Research methods combine participant observation, semi-structured interviews and secondary data. This dissertation is composed of three articles that together explore the different facets of management accounting innovations. The first article tackles the question of how innovations get created and on their path to institutionalization. The focus is on the actors and their strategies, the who and how of the institutionalization process. Through an in-depth case study of one organization, the second article uncovers the process of the non-adoption of a carbon accounting methodology. The third article analyses the practices surrounding and accounting innovation in a multinational.Overall, this dissertation makes three main theoretical contributions on the specific institutional work developed by elite, the role of internal legitimacy in organizational legitimacy, and on the processes of co-emergence of new practices. This research on EMA innovations also contributes to further understanding how sustainable development can be pursued through accounting in organizations

In order to understand the urban expansion in non-developable areas, the research combines three dimensions of analysis: spatial analysis, social behavior analysis, and the evaluation of urban management and spatial planning. The study focuses on three Peruvian cases: a seasonal fog-oasis in the arid city of Lima, the prime farmlands in Cajamarca valley, and the wetlands of the small city of Huamachuco. Urban expansion in the case studies is predominantly informal and disorganized as a consequence of serious deficiencies in local public management, road planning, and the culture of informality. However, some communal organizations and social leaders contribute to a more sustainable land-use

Full textWater resource management can be a complex, uncertain and conflictual domain. It faces numerous problems in many regions of the world, such as the disparity of interests associated with the water resource, multiple decision makers, complex networks of administration, inoperative water distribution, various socio-political events and climate change. Consequently, environmental decision-making takes place in a highly interconnected system, in which neither the decisional ramifications nor the complexity of its impacts can be neglected. In the Apulia Region, water scarcity is the main rising problem and is affecting human and more-than-human communities.Water scarcity generates the need to enhance collaborative multi-agent decision-making processes. Researchers suggest that the “tragedy of commons” could be avoided when a shared resource is at stake, provided that communities interact and operate in a collective way and avoid, for example, the market rules constraints. This requires the development of dynamic decision-aiding tools. They should be capable to integrate the different problem frames held by the decision makers, to clarify the differences among those frames, to support the creation of a collaborative problem structuring process and to provide shared platforms and interaction spaces. In this regard, we built a dynamic interaction space (DIS), highlighting the operative criticalities and allowing the analysts to identify a shared problem definition. The emerging issues of gathering and exchanging knowledge and representing structured concepts can be solved through a combined approach. Multi-agent systems joined with system dynamics can provide unconventional alternatives that use physical and social components, with a particular focus on individual and collective behaviours in resource management with multiple decision makers. In our case study, the model was used as a platform for modelling multi-agent organizations, in order to support collective decision-making in water management. The model is capable of representing a distributed complex water management system, where simulated behaviours are based on field observations and on the participation of stakeholders. What is more, the multi–agent system approach enables the interaction and allows to formalize theIrene Pluchinotta – “Multi-Agent Modelling For Distributed Intelligent Decision In Water Management”iibehaviours of water users in the management process. A system dynamics modelling in an environment of interacting decision agents, allows us to explicitly consider the different frames and to simulate interactions when adopting a new policy. The model can showcase how the limited understanding of the interaction space affects the actions followed by each decision-makers and, finally, how it could lead to policy resistance mechanisms. Full textSince the 1980s, participatory processes have proliferated all over the world, without having enabled for a democratization of political systems. While the adoption of such processes is often thought has an imperative, in particular for developing countries and in the environmental field, this thesis seeks to explain the construction of environmental participation in South Africa, using an approach aiming at identifying the actors involved, analyzing their motivations and the way in which they influence it. Our analytical framework offers to study the behavior of groups of actors through four dimensions: the competition between political actors; the weight of administrative structures; the profile of professionalized service providers; the struggles of social actors. Our study relies on semi-structured interviews, meetings’ observations, grey literature and the collect of records. At the end of our thesis, we notice little interest from political actors for environmental participatory processes in South Africa. This causes a lack of incentive for administrative structures to take the public voice into account, usually leading to a low-cost organization by consultants, which does only allow for a monitory of the South African population to express itself. Civil servants who do not have the support of administrative structures with which they should collaborate try nonetheless to circumvent them by seeking public support so that they can implement their mandate for environmental preservation. In order to make their way into the South African participation market dominated by environmental consultants, independent consultants also choose to specialize themselves into the public participation field and to favor the organization of participatory processes adapted to the local context

Full textFor some years, sustainable development has imposed itself as a societal value. Enterprises are facing growing expectations and aspirations from their stakeholders. Sustainable development has become both a strategic imperative and a “source of strategic stakes” for enterprises, irrespective of their sector of activities. However, the issue relating to the implementation or conversion of such a polysemous, polymorphic and protean concept into clear and relevant management practices remains a deep concern for the enterprises that are willing to integrate sustainable development in their strategies. This work aims at developing a comprehensive approach in line with the implementation of the concept of sustainable development in the framework of voluntarist strategies. To do so, the privileged theoretical standpoint has been the resources and competence model. Such a qualitative research consists in a multiple case study, in a perspective of literal replication. To describe, analyze and understand the implementation of sustainable development, semi-directing interviews have been carried, along with secondary data collection. This research is instrumental in stabilizing and putting in perspective the concept of sustainable development in the field of management science. First of all, it brings into focus four strategic attitudes that are likely to be adopted by enterprises, and then suggests two complementary modalities for implementing the concept of sustainable development. And finally, it offers several implementation approaches - stated in a thematic way- to address the aforementioned concept

Full textGrape production from PDO wines (Protected Designation of Origin) is subjected to tender specifications, imposing requirements in terms of performance, as well as practices and products quality. In addition to these requirements, the winemaker must now make its viticultural technical management routes evolve, to improve its environmental performances. But, defining actions guidelines for the improvement of viticultural practices based on environmental assessments and grape qualityis very complex, since each one of these assessments provide a significant number of indicators. The aim of the thesis is to construct an evaluation method that takes into consideration both evaluating the environmental performance of viticultural technical management routes with grape quality and assisting the winemaker and advisor to identify practices to ensure the best compromise between "environmental performance" and " product quality". This method allows to analyze a technical management route as well as to compare it to others. This method was developed and tested on five technical management routes with differentiated practices, on the Chenin Blanc grape variety in the middle Loire Valley, for two years with contrasted climates. The study helped (i) analyzing the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) results specifically for viticulture, (ii) showing the importance of interannual variability in the results of environmental assessment by LCA. The work also led to the development of a model to explain the grapes quality linked with viticultural practices, and soil and climate factors, to study the potential impact of a practice change, on the grape quality evaluation. The CONTRA-QUALENVIC multi-criteria method construction for viticulture is the main outcome of this study, and includes (i) the construction of decision rules and mathematical functions to meet them, and (ii) experts’ meetings to characterize the criteria to aggregate and weight. The CONTRA-QUALENVIC method has been tested by comparing it to other methods. To conclude, the CONTRA-QUALENVIC method is an effective method for decision support as part of a continuous improvement of viticultural practices towards a better respect of the environment, while maintaining the grape quality

Full textDocument 1: Presentation of the doctoral research dossierThis document presents the general framework of the doctoral research dossier. It intends to briefly explain the research methodology, in order to better understand the dual approach adopted and the structure of this doctoral research. On the one hand, the dossier is based on several articles published on the issue of forest certification schemes political transformations. On the other hand, the dossier includes a research on the issue of environmental effectiveness of rainforest management devices. This first document introduces the critical stand, the issues addressed and the disciplines involved in these two approaches. Finally, the prospects offered by this research are mentioned.Document 2: Political transformations induced by the development of forest management certification: the case of FSC.This document analyses the political impact of a forest management certification device: the Forest Steward Council (FSC). It integrates five articles published in academic/scientific books and journals between 2007 and 2011, which were published in the framework of the NORMES research project “Regulation by standards : the instruments of regulations in the governance of sustainable development”, financed by the French National Agency of Research (ANR). The publications are preceded by a framing text which presents the background and the working of the FSC-instrument, and then introduces the texts succinctly. The research activities permit to enhance the understanding of political transformations, induced by the FSC. The institutional innovations which were produced by the FSC will be emphasized, as well as the reach and the limits of this voluntary instrument, the behavorial changes it brings about, and the side-effects it generates, in particular in terms of equity between the concerned players in this field. Finally, the analysis of the public-private relations shows that, far from being a private and isolated instrument, the FSC exerts a certain influence on the elaboration of public politics, and, reciprocally, its development is conditioned by a certain degree of governmental intervention.Document 3: Laying the bases of a benchmark for assessing the devices which corner the deforestation and rainforest degradation problems. This document concentrates on the issue of effectiveness of the devices which tackle the problems of deforestation and rainforest degradation. The starting point of this work is the problem-solving difficulties, despite repeated international statements and devices adopted in recent decades.Based on these observations, the research focuses on evaluation frameworks that would assess the environmental effectiveness of such devices. It starts with a critical analysis of the theoretical framework used to address global environmental issues, specifically the effectiveness of global environmental regimes theories (Underdal, 1992, Young, 1998). Then, an extensive literature review on the rainforest management issues is presented, showing the complexity of the problem. The research pointed out the failures of the current approaches implemented to tackle the deforestation and rainforest degradation. Finally, by using the framework of the Strategic analysis of environmental management (Mermet 1992, 1998, Mermet & a, 2005, 2010), this study demonstrated that despite the complexity of the deforestation and rainforest degradation problem, it is legitimate, useful and possible to construct a referential for evaluation focused on environmental challenges that forests are facing. The basis of this framework is laid out, by detailing the principal elements that will be able to frame the evaluation of the effectiveness of the management of these forests

Full textTitle: Human living and urban transitions to sustainability: the Gordian knot of construction costs in the case of sustainable real estate or Digital technologies necessary for the evolution of the real estate value chain towards sustainability. While environmental awareness could be widely understood and shared by as many people as possible, emissions of greenhouse gases, pollutants and waste continue to grow. Housing and transportation are the biggest contributors. Sustainable development tends to provide the foundation for a sustainable growth model of our planet, but today remains marginally integrated in strategies applied by people, organizations and policy makers. The fall in state resources is giving rise to the intervention of private groups in the fabric of the city. The production process by the segmentation of the interventions, the complexity, the asymmetry of information and skills and its underlying economic model makes complex the taking into account of a real durability, but a house has a real influence on our potential of becoming. Our living, its place, its form, are important vectors of equity in the sense of social justice and thus of a 'living together'. But sustainable development as practiced by the markets is rare and expensive. We have identified adjustment variables that can make the cost of housing accessible. An evolution of the real estate value chain can lead to a significant reduction in the cost of construction and the price to make housing affordable enough. Sustainability can help support demographics by adapting our lifestyles, while positively contributing to the development of individuals, businesses and institutions through the co-construction of (good) practices, particularly in investments that remain largely to be define

Full textThe compatibility of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) risks management with the investment management requirements under the investors` fiduciary duties (FD) figures among the key questions in today`s context of a rapid growth of sustainable investment strategies. This question is thus the subject of the ongoing regulatory developments in Europe and the object of recent lawsuits in the US federal jurisdiction. Despite these current legal developments, investors still have no clear answer to this issue, what leaves them inert in the face of these new and unconventional types of risk.In our research, we explore the recent advancements in the EU and the US legal practice aiming to determine to what extent the FD requires ESG risks consideration by investors in their investment management decisions. We identify ESG risks materiality and the effectiveness of risk hedging actions as fundamental elements for the definition of ESG risks management obligations of investors under the FD rule. We design a theoretical representation of ESG risks materiality under the FD law and identify that within the FD legal framework ESG risks are assimilated to financial risks; thus, their management is required only if they are financially material for investments. We also reveal that the FD law requires management of long-term ESG risks, which are sufficiently material considering the applied discount rate, and formulate a FD-compliant discounting principle. Then, through the Case Study of the recent US ERISA ESOP lawsuit, we establish that risk-aversion in the qualification of the effectiveness of ESG risk hedging actions could impede efficient risk management by incentivising investors not to hedge a material ESG risk

Full textUsing the example of Antibes Juan-les-Pins, we show the interest of organizing an involvement procedure in the city with the geographer's expertise. The aim is to set up a green spaces governance tried out during working groups used as pilot study cases. The collaboration between the City of Antibes Juan-les-Pins and the geography laboratory ESPACE 7300, brings together university research for theDépôt de thèseDonnées complémentairesproduction and development of scientific knowledge, with policy on urban planning and sustainable management conscient of the issues, conceptions and way of green spaces management. For this research, we use the “geogovernance” approach. The interesting fact about it is that it is based on actors’ involvement in their own territory prospects, through the use of spatial analysis methods and tools. That way, the geographer can be a scientific, expert, mediator or organiser as well. Through his cross-disciplinary training, he is able to adapt and to understand his interlocutors while deploying some innovating tools in order to build his project. Throughout this research, we create an operating procedure, developing a participating strategy inside an administrative service that we experiment before evaluation. At the end of this work, we build a reflexion helping tool for the administrator through the modelling of dynamics as well as the organisation of green spaces management from a participating procedure thought by the geographer

Full textOur thesis is part of a regional project aiming the development of a community environmental information system for agricultural practices in the watershed of the Vesle. The objective of this observatory is 1) to understand the practices of responsible of the water resource pollution by pesticides from agriculture in the study area and 2) to provide relevant and sustainable tools to estimate their impacts. Our open issue deals with the consideration of imperfection in the process of merging multiple sources and imperfect data. Indeed, information on practices is not exhaustive and is not subject to return, so we need to build this knowledge through the combination of multiple sources and of varying quality by integrating imperfect information management information in the system. In this context, we propose methods for spatial reconstruction of information related to agricultural practices from the RPG remote sensing, field surveys and expert opinions, skilled reconstruction with an assessment of the quality of the information. Furthermore, we propose a conceptual modeling of agronomic entities' imperfect information system building on UML and PERCEPTORY.We provide tools and models of representation of imperfect information from the various sources of information using fuzzy sets and the belief function theory and integrate these models into the computation of agri-environmental indicators such as TFI and ASQ

Full textAlgeria is a producing and exporting country of hydrocarbons, but this revenue stream which made live more than 30 million inhabitants will be dried up in less than 30 years. The spectre of it after oil will show itself as we shall expect least unless no measure was taken to face it. One of the substitution solutions to hydrocarbons is to develop the sector of the tourism. It is an economic stake which will assure resources in currencies and their positive effects on the balance of payments. On the redundancy plan, it will allow to increase the employment knowing that there is a distance mattering between the demand and the offer regarding work. It is also an environmental stake because it requires the existence of quality potentialities to assure its sustainability. It is in this frame that we registered our research for a tourist development in Algeria in its integrated dimension, environment-friendly, by supporting our work by taking for study case Algiers, the capital being the showcase of the country. To do it, we established a current situation of the tourism in Algeria and the environmental impacts on the tourist spaces. The tourism is not developed in spite of the diversity of the potentialities and the multiple strategies of tourist development which followed one another. Besides, knowing that the tourist sector undergoes the impacts of the other activities on the environment, we detailed the sources of degradation by returning on the case of Algiers which shows well the catastrophic environmental situation which prevails in the country. ll this allowed to clear perspectives for a development integrated of the tourism on the coast of Algiers, which can be adapted to every entity of the algerian coast

Full textCurrent issues concerning the sustainable tourism in Cambodia based on the action of Local Tourism State Actors (LTSA) in terms of Resources and Competences, particularly defining the roles of the LTSA, are systematically explored in this research. The LTSA are the director of provincial or city tourism department who take a lead role in managing a localized tourism industry of the government. The central research question focuses on the “Strategy towards Sustainable Tourism in Cambodia, according to the perceptions of the LTSA”. In investigating to this context, the qualitative methods were used to collect primary data through in-depth interviews (semi-structured) with all the 25 LTSA. The data was further analyzed through a content analysis with a usage of NVivo10, a computer based program for coding or categorizing. The findings indicate that there are five main local challenges to Cambodia’s sustainable tourism: (1) Professional Tourism Skills and Qualifications, (2) Working Attitudes of Managers and Employees, (3) Tourism Law, Regulations, and Circulars, (4) Finances and Facilities, and (5) Public Tourism Awareness and Participation. These challenges can be broadly categorized as personal, institutional, and external problems; particularly related to the lack of financial resources, and especially human resources in regards to both quality and quantity of professional tourism officials. In order to effectively transcend sustainable tourism and local tourism management challenges, state actors play important roles. Firstly they have an internal managing role as a local manager, and secondly they have an external cooperating role which is closely defined as a local ambassador. Moreover, the state actor should strive for a third role: referred to as the personal advancing role. This is where the managers become a learner in order to improve personal skills and capacity based on experiential learning. Personal advancing roles can be further augmented through self-directed studies, workshops, seminars, training and education. As highlighted in the findings and discussion section, the quality of managing and cooperating roles of LTSA are heavily dependent on personal advancing roles. The role of LTSA has significant influence on sustainable tourism because the manager is the most central actor dealing directly with all relevant sustainable tourism stakeholders, especially for their contributions to the policy and decision making. Thus, the continuous advancement of qualifications, effectiveness and efficiency of LTSA in implementing their role is a priority and highly needed. State actors should focus on personal advancing roles to enhance managing and cooperating roles

Full textThe impact of all kinds of waste inevitably increases as the world's population becomes more urbanized, and as initiatives to consider it as a resource or to reduce its quantity multiply. First, we seek to demonstrate that waste constitutes a complete geographic and social object, not only because it reveals how the relationship between Man and Earth functions, but also because spatial analysis of related activities linked to waste collection, disposal, and recovery, indicates how this object enters territories. Thus, in France and in Brazil, a new system of governance emerged in the 1970s, placing waste treatment in a particular treatment in municipal cooperation, applying both technical and social solutions, such as the integration of wastepickers work in recycling. However, efforts by public, private, and associative agents are generally insufficient to limit impacts and to value correctly the garbage produced in cities. Using Geography tools, we seek to evaluate solutions put into practice in three case studies (in Rio de Janeiro and Paris) in order to understand how the actors are organized in their territories to face environmental, economic, and social challenges put forth by the disposal of urban waste, since formal and informal circuits continue to coexist. Finally, the geographicity elements of this object stand out clearly in terms the treatment of temporalities and the interweaving of scales, but also by the expansion of responsibilities in the public space, at all levels, from individual scales to institutional superstructures

Full textThe dissertation seeks to recognize the socio-spatial meanings of dynamic conflicts related to the environment in the lagoon and to assess its effects in terms of environmental governance as well. The analysis concentrates on the reasons and the genesis of the actors’ oppositions at work around the lagoon of Bizerte (Tunisia) and the pond of Berre (Marseille). Putting the light on these conflicts represents an issue for the integrated wetland management. This topic has been tackled on by other researchers. However, it remains a major interest due to the knowledge and the originality of the territory. Particularly, the thesis raises the question of the potential impacts that conflicts can have on organizations and institutions in place. In fact, is it possible that public action will be renewed to follow the emergence or conflicts regulation? This question is tied to the challenges of the current and major companies and to an extreme rapidity of territory changing: Bizerte’s lagoon is situated on the southern shore of the Mediterranean and in a country where the regime is in continuous transition. This research covers the ground to study the potential emergence of the participative approach and the social integration of environmental issues in coastal, urban and rural territory

Full textAddressing the difficult problem of eliminating mobile phone waste, based on the concept of creating shared value, circular economy and green supply chain, this thesis was first demonstrated in theoretical frameworks and by the theoretical review of the literature, then put forward the idea and method to build a mobile phone waste recycling system based on these theories. To facilitate the recycling of mobile phone waste at the practical level in China and other countries, the existing problems and the way of operation are summarized, and the utilization space of mobile phone waste is expanded. Quantitative analysis is applied to examine the relevant evaluation indicators and mathematical models at the analytical level. This thesis mainly used the following four types of research methods: analytic hierarchy process, empirical analysis, quantitative and qualitative analysis, as well as an integration of the macro level and micro level analysis. Through these research methods, this thesis made a detailed analysis and discussion on the recycling status, influencing factors, the effects of use, comprehensive evaluation index system and relevant laws and regulations of mobile phone waste. After a detailed analysis, the thesis concluded that even though the evidences have showed that mobile phones waste cause serious pollution to the environment, an enormous amount of economic values still existed in the mobile phones waste. The low rates of recycling and reusing of systems could be strengthened first by improving the economic mechanism based on improving the economic mechanism based on the theories of the circular economy, creating shared value and green supply chains. Second, by improving the technological innovation. Third, by building a relevant system of laws and regulations on mobile phone waste management. Fourth, by establishing a system of reasonable and effective evaluation indicators through the use of mathematical models. And finally, by subsidizing educational activities to promote the protection of the environment and put in place a set of management systems that involve the public, governments and manufacturing companies
