Jacob, Sarah. "Imagining Equality, Shifting Human Consciousness Toward Ecological Sustainability." FIU Digital Commons, 2012. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/724.

Abstract:
My thesis explored the idea that inequality is a human-made perspective that has been informed concurrently through social and metaphysical structures. My intent has been to show how inequality as a learned man-made system of consciousness has played a pivotal role in justifying the exploitation of other cultures and the environment in the name of progress, advancement and human destiny. I have explored the idea that anthropocentrism and ethno-centric patriarchy has been woven so deeply into the fabric of modern perception that we are largely unconscious of its existence, even while we reap the results in both environmental and social degradation. My thesis has argued that a metaphysics, which supports equality, would result in a different value system that would prioritize diversity of life above and beyond human advancement, and emphasize cross-species interconnectedness thereby reducing the risk of exploitation inherent in the existing globally driven capitalist system.

Abstract:
Based on previous research about gender equality in transport planning there are some obvious inequalities between the two genders. To start with, women's and men's travel patterns are different, the difference occurs in the causes of these travel patterns. For example men´s travel pattern show that they travel mostly from home to work, while women take different trips between home, work, shop and in behalf of others, such as taking children to school. The difference also occurs in with regards to usage of different transport modes and other categories presented in this research. The purpose of this thesis has been to explore why such differences occur and how gender equality is integrated in transport planning in Estonia. In order to study how gender equality in transport planning is managed, a study based on qualitative methods transport agencies experiences with regards to gender equality was carried out. Furthermore, the study was based on literature reviews and interviews. The results show that there is little expertise within this topic in Estonia and even while the topic is known, it is not integrated into transport planning. The results also indicate several challenges such as traditional and stereotypical attitudes towards gender roles in the Estonian society. The conclusion is that there are several underlying problems. It is clear that the respondents have the knowledge about the topic, however not with regards to the transport planning sector. The reasons according to transport planners are that gender equality in transport planning sector is not prioritised. Furthermore, the study could show a resistance in getting information for the research topic which demonstrates how unfamiliar this topic is among those in transport planning sector today. The challenges such as lack of knowledge and lack of expertise are some of the obstacles that needs to be dealt with before gender equality could be successfully implemented and integrated into transport planning in Estonia.

Klar, David. "Sustainable Dwellings and Intergenerational Equality - New Applications for Ecological Economics : A Systems Thinking Approach." Thesis, Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet, Institutt for energi- og prosessteknikk, 2011. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:no:ntnu:diva-15081.

Abstract:
A systems thinking based approach was used to define and investigate the current state of knowledge in the academic disciplines related to sustainable residential dwellings via literature review. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with respondents connected to the system definition. The goal of the study was to determine the extent to which the academic disciplines, as well as the respondents, incorporated the social, economic, environmental and intergenerational aspects of sustainability. Significant variation was found in both the disciplines as well as in the responses of interviewees. Life-cycle cost analysis of dwellings built to the Norwegian passive house standard was used to investigate the implications of using alternative discount factors for extended assumed life spans. The results indicated that alternative discount factors have the potential to significantly reduce rental costs while fulfilling the potential Pareto optimality criterion. The alternative discount factors used in the life-cycle cost analysis were later shown to have flaws which limit their usefulness; a methodology for deriving a representative multigenerational discount rate was proposed.

van, Duijn Diandra. "The Importance of Gender Equality in Climate Action : An investigation into how UN member states view the relation between gender equality and climate action." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för geovetenskaper, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-432709.

Abstract:
Scientists warn that the current rate of climate change will raise average global temperature by 4°C compared to 1990, although warming of +2°C will already have dire effects throughout the world. Therefore, the UN acknowledges SDG 13 (Climate Action) as one of the most important goals for the coming decade in order to fight climate change. Another focus of the UN is SDG 5 (Gender Equality), which is also an overarching goal but still lagging behind. Working on one of the goals can have a positive effect on other goals. Therefore a synergy can be created when investigating how climate change affects gender equality and how gender equality affects climate action.  The link between gender equality and climate action was already established by the UN at the Beijing Platform of Action in 1995. However, there has been little research into how government representatives understand how the goals are interconnected. These representatives are important in the drafting of new policy and keeping the UN accountable for incorporating gender into its policies. Hence, this thesis investigates how the relationship between gender equality and climate action is viewed by government representatives, as well as in national climate documents. A content analysis was performed on National Determined Contributions (NDCs) and climate change Gender Action Plans (ccGAPs). The results illustrate that the location and expertise of the interviewees impacted their opinions greatly. The interviewees based at permanent missions at the UN headquarter in New York were of the opinion that their government thought the link existed but acknowledged more should be done to convince other countries as the link was not taken for a fact. The interviewees working with the UNFCCC negotiations, however, said all member states agreed on the importance of including gender equality in climate action. Another finding is that only one-third of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) contained gender perspectives. Of these, one-third mentioned women as victims of climate change and two-thirds saw women as actors of change in climate action.  Establishing a firm agreement on the link between gender equality and climate action within UN bodies is important to expanding the impact of climate policies on both gender quality and climate action.

Abstract:

South Africa is undergoing a period of transition from Apartheid to democracy. In this process, redressing discriminatory factors (race and gender) is of utmost urgency and importance. The equity Act, and within this, affirmative action, are ways in which these isuses can be addressed. South Africa has undergone a process of dramatic change. Since the first democrataic election of 1994, notably so in the area of gender equity. This report examined female representivity in senior management within Drakenstein municipality in the Western Cape. The study evaluated employment barriers, which inhibits women from entering senior positions. The study also compared and analyzed past, present and future development, to evaluate the efforts that have been made to promote employment equity within local government.

Isaacs, Wainella. "Opportunities to Mainstream Gender in Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Projects: A Case Study in Barbados." Scholar Commons, 2017. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6621.

Full text
Abstract:
According to the World Resources Institute, Barbados is one of seven Caribbean countries ranked as being the most water stressed territories in the world. Prevailing drought conditions for the period 2010-2016 further compromised its water security while confirming predictions of a drier regional Caribbean climate. The simultaneous failing of at least 50-year-old water infrastructure at many points in the distribution network adds to these water stress conditions, and presents a financial burden to the local water utility in the form of lost revenues, and increased energy consumption for pumping. Climate change and its impacts are not gender-neutral, and water infrastructure projects developed to mitigate and or adapt to climate change impacts will have different degrees of gender dimensions, based on the social and economic contexts within which populations are embedded. Incorporating gender differences in climate projects is smart economics, and as such the Green Climate Fund (GCF) is the first international fund to mandate the integration of a “gender-sensitive approach” throughout project life cycles. The Barbados Water Authority (BWA) is applying, with the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center (5Cs), for funding from the Green Climate Fund to pursue an Energy-Water-Nutrient Nexus for Sustainable Coastal Infrastructure (EWN-SCI) project. The proposed project will develop an interdisciplinary program in Barbados that implements demonstration sites with integrated water supply, resource recovery, and renewable energy management systems that are designed to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, support climate change adaptation strategies, build technical capacity in the Caribbean region, and share lessons learnt with the rest of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries. The overall goal of this research is to present practical guidelines, and approaches to mainstream and operationalize gender throughout the life cycle of water and wastewater infrastructure projects using an Energy Water Nutrient nexus project in Barbados. The objectives to guide this research are (1) to determine the institutional and legal frameworks that inform the types and extent of gender mainstreaming activities to be incorporated in the development of water and wastewater climate infrastructure projects in Barbados, (2) to characterize the current landscape for integrating gender into the design and management of water and wastewater infrastructure in Barbados, and (3) evaluate and recommend opportunities for gender integration in the life cycle of water and wastewater infrastructure in Barbados. Literature and tools for categorization of the gender dimensions of water and wastewater infrastructure (centralized and decentralized) projects in Small Island Developing States, and particularly Caribbean nations to determine the scope, and type of appropriate gender mainstreaming activities are limited. In the literature, gender equality as a goal of climate financing mechanisms was introduced retroactively for several multilateral climate funds due to sub-optimal project outcomes from gender blind projects. Projects implemented by these funds globally, post inclusion of explicit gender equality outcomes can provide direct, or indirect guidance on appropriate gender mainstreaming activities to be included in the development of water and wastewater infrastructure projects in Barbados. Case studies on water and sanitation gender vulnerabilities in Jamaica provide one of the few ideal sources of information on Caribbean gender mainstreaming activities. To inform objective 1, literature on Barbados’ population, socio-economic statistics, and national gender and climate change policies was used to determine the status and scope of institutional and legal commitments to gender mainstreaming the development of water and wastewater climate adaptive infrastructure in Barbados. To satisfy objective 2, a gender profile of technical and leadership roles at the BWA was created, and social media information, results of a water user survey, focus groups and interviews were analyzed to gain cultural context, and community insight on existing gender inequalities, impacts resulting from the types of water infrastructure projects pursued and their methods of implementation. The survey, focus groups and interviews were conducted in Barbados during the period 10/20/16 to 11/8/16. This period was characterized by unprecedented water shortages and interruptions which were reflected in the feedback from the data analysis. For objective 3, gender impacts of the infrastructural components of the EWN-SCI projects were described, and opportunities to address these concerns across the individual infrastructure project cycles were proposed. There are currently no legislative commitments to gender equality in water and wastewater resources management in Barbados. A Draft National Policy on Gender is presently before parliament but the policy does not address gender and water. The BWA has more men than women employed in technical (45% vs 3.5%), and leadership (9.1% vs 3.9%) roles which directly contribute to the design and management of the utility’s projects. Most of these individuals are in the middle or near the end of their careers (> 40 years of age), and thus present a timely opportunity to recruit, train and promote women to fill these roles. On social media (Facebook and Twitter), many individuals described the challenges experienced during the water shortages. Individuals also criticized the BWA for their lack of communication during this period. The lack of an online presence by the BWA represented a lost opportunity to engage its stakeholders on collaborative solutions that could temporarily or permanently alleviate the challenges. The water user survey revealed a statistical significant association (p ≤ 0.05) between gender and type of water storage container used at the household level. Men were more likely than women to report use of larger plastic buckets and tanks, while women showed a preference for smaller buckets and bottles. Identification and consideration of design parameters such as preference for type and size of storage receptacle, system elevation, position of cleaning access point, and need for a pump will facilitate or limit the successful adoption or adaptation of rainwater harvesting systems. The proposition of a research arm of the utility that could study gender dimensions of health impacts of water quality and water interruptions, and economic studies assessing feasibility of introducing a tariff structure on water provision were priority projects from the BWA. Investment in equipment at the national government lab, and at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Chemistry Department represents a skills building and economic empowerment opportunity for women who form the bulk of workforce at these institutions. The key recommendations identified from the Gender Impact Assessment for the model EWN-SCI Projects were to the need to identify clear gender objectives and targets prior to project implementation to ensure their incorporation in the project. Budgetary allocations to appoint a gender focal point who would coordinate these activities are also recommended. Job creation is one the main areas for distribution of project benefits for the EWN-SCI Project. Since the current skillsets for technical jobs at the BWA bias allotment to men, and at the UWI Chemistry Department there is bias in favor of women, targeted training and recruitment should be aimed at the under-represented sex for each position. Additionally the inclusion of socio-economic information as a criterion for prioritization of locations for intervention was recommended.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to explain how post-conflict environmental initiatives affect women’s empowerment within natural resource management in the short term. It argues that the lack of causal effect between the variables can be explained by the robustness of patriarchal institutions. Gender-sensitive environmental peacebuilding lacks the strength to counter traditional and well-established formal and informal societal structures. Using a structured focused comparison on Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo the analysis shows that UNEP Country Recovery Programmes, which are used as an example of the post-conflict environmental initiatives, were unable to change women’s position within natural resource management in the first five years of the establishment. Even though presented theoretical frameworks partially explain the results, more research is needed to draw informed and conclusive inferences.

Abstract:
Currently, the world as we know it is undergoing many different transformations towards a more sustainable future, one of which is the energy transition. The energy transition is a wicked problem that requires transformative and creative thinking to be solved. One way to foster an innovative environment in organizations is by having a diverse workforce with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. However, the energy sector, which has a major responsibility in the transition, is currently gender-segregated. Thus, not taking advantage of diverse capabilities. This thesis studies the energy-gender nexus within a Swedish context and explores what implications a male-dominated energy sector could entail for the energy transition. This is done through a qualitative research design using two methods, (1) a document review to analyze how important actors in the Swedish energy transition currently address gender equality, (2) expert interviews to further explore these findings. The results showed that the energy-gender nexus is a complex paradigm and that opportunities and challenges to integrate more diversity often are interconnected. The main challenges were showed to be connected to presumptions of generalized gender norms, the sectorial image, and the need for structural change. Opportunities were connected to affirmative action and advocacy from initiatives or role models, and benefits from specific measurable targets. It was also concluded that more perspectives and a diversified energy sector could potentially benefit the energy transition through acceleration.

Schlesinger, Thomas. "North vs. South: Sovereign Equality and the Environment in the Twentieth Century." PDXScholar, 1995. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/5048.

Full text
Abstract:
Although Third World states lack military and economic strength, they still are able to exert considerable influence on certain international issues. The proliferation of small states following World War II, coupled with the twentieth century acceptance of the norm of sovereign equality, has enabled the weak states of the international system to challenge the order established by the strong. While Third World nations are weak according to traditional measures of power, sovereign equality and bloc voting by the small states, have accorded a type of "conditional" power to the South. This conditional power is augmented by the advent of a new international issue, the environment. Because of their large populations and natural resource bases, developing countries significantly influence environmental problems and therefore have greater leverage in environmental negotiations. This thesis seeks to demonstrate that because of the military and economic weakness of the South, it has sought to develop alternative sources of international strength. These new sources take advantage of norms and issues particular to twentieth century world politics. While these other sources thus far lack the potency of military or economic power, they do provide the South with a limited, but nonetheless important amount of influence in international politics. This thesis analyzes the nature and scope of the South's power arising out of the acceptance of the norm of sovereign equality. The paper also studies a second source of strength for developing nations, negative power; this power is based on the South's ability to frustrate Northern efforts to deal with serious environmental problems. By examining two major international environmental conferences, the thesis demonstrates both the character and limitations of this negative power. The foregoing study concludes that the new power of the South, though still quite limited today, may be an indication of growing strength as global environmental problems become increasingly central to international relations.

Abstract:
The world is facing a global waste crisis due to half of the waste produced not being collected, treated or safely disposed of. Waste not managed in a proper way causes air and water pollution and has negative health and social impacts on people living or working close to the waste. Alt- hough evidence shows that implementing gender approaches improves environmental issues, and the majority of waste pickers are women, few organisations focused on waste management are implementing gender mainstreaming into their work. This case study examines gender main- streaming within the organisation Women in Informal Employment: Globalising and Organising (WIEGO) in relation to environmental issues. WIEGO is an international organisation working to increase the voice, visibility and validity of the working poor, with a special emphasis on women, with a core project that supports cooperative waste picker women in Brazil. The study was conducted through two interviews on local and international level and the analysis of 20 documents describing WIEGO and its work. The theories and concepts of gender mainstreaming, intersectionality, Feminist Political Ecology and Environmental Justice were used to analyse the results. The study showed that WIEGO was implementing gender mainstreaming in their opera- tive work, in the policy framework and in the waste picker projects in Brazil which has resulted in physical and emotional improvements for WIEGO employees internationally and waste pick- ers in Brazil. <<<
Denna fallstudie undersöker ”gender mainstreaming” i organisationen Women in Informal Employment: Globalising and Organising (WIEGO) i relation till miljöproblem.

Abstract:
This paper will examine two public transportation hubs, as examples of public space, in Gothenburg, Sweden, from a gender perspective by investigate how gender equality is discussed in planning processes of hubs and to explore how hubs are used and perceived by men and women. The thesis has a qualitative and hermeneutic approach, with semi-structured interviews with key persons from the planning processes, and site observations and interviews with men and women using the hubs as the main data gathering methods. In the planning processes for the two cases the ambition was to create hubs that were welcoming for everyone, from a theoretical point of view this ambition could be dangerous from a gender perspective since a planning for everyone often leads to a planning for the man. In order to create hubs for everyone there was a focus for creating safety and increase accessibility for the disabled during the planning processes. The observations and the interviews on site shows that the hubs could be viewed as gender equal since the hubs were open to both men and women to use, but the hubs could also be viewed as not gender equal since women felt unsafe. The analysis shows that the social interaction on site is a crucial factor when defining a place as gender equal or not. The social interaction can be understood by gender contract. One conclusion is that there is a need for discussions about gender and its effect on experiences of public space, where gender contract is problematized. It will otherwise be hard to understand and change the interaction and the gender inequality will risk to consolidate.

Abstract:
Introduction: Gendered practices of working life create gender inequalities through horizontal and vertical gender segregation in work, which may lead to inequalities in health between women and men. Gender equality could therefore be a key element of health equity in working life. Our aim was to analyze what gender (in) equality means for the employees at a woman-dominated workplace and discuss possible implications for health experiences. Methods: All caregiving staff at two workplaces in elder care within a municipality in the north of Sweden were invited to participate in the study. Forty-five employees participated, 38 women and 7 men. Seven focus group discussions were performed and led by a moderator. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the focus groups. Results: We identified two themes. "Advocating gender equality in principle" showed how gender (in) equality was seen as a structural issue not connected to the individual health experiences. "Justifying inequality with individualism" showed how the caregivers focused on personalities and interests as a justification of gender inequalities in work division. The justification of gender inequality resulted in a gendered work division which may be related to health inequalities between women and men. Gender inequalities in work division were primarily understood in terms of personality and interests and not in terms of gender. Conclusion: The health experience of the participants was affected by gender (in) equality in terms of a gendered work division. However, the participants did not see the gendered work division as a gender equality issue. Gender perspectives are needed to improve the health of the employees at the workplaces through shifting from individual to structural solutions. A healthy-setting approach considering gender relations is needed to achieve gender equality and fairness in health status between women and men.

Esteve, González Patricia. "Competition in nonmarket environments." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Rovira i Virgili, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/127110.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis analyses competitive situations in which public institutions are involved and evaluates public institutions from three different perspectives. The first contribution analyses a regular activity of public institutions, procurement of services, in which there is a potential moral hazard problem. A public institution should bias future competitions in favour to the past winner who performs a high quality service, and that this bias should be additive. When the linearity is reduced a bit, the moral hazard problem is less severe. However, if the linearity is reduced too much, the advantage of the past winner disappears and biasing the contest can be counterproductive. The second contribution regards how public institutions can change a reality: disadvantage of minorities. Some affirmative action policies establish that a set of disadvantaged competitors has access to an extra prize. We find that an extra prize is a powerful tool to ensure participation of disadvantaged agents and this tool can be established purely on efficiency grounds when the disadvantage of the minority is not too severe. The third contribution studies agents’ perception of public institutions for the case of political parties in member countries of the European Union (EU). We find that economic factors, in addition to ideological and electoral motives, are determinants of partisan support to European integration. This support, which has grown in recent periods, depends on the distribution among member countries of the benefits from the EU and the specific economic situation of the each political party’s country.

Abstract:
Abstract The public space is often perceived as more unsafe for women than for men and it is therefore a question of gender equality. Opinions differ on how the public space should be changed to improve women’s feelings of security. This case aims to discuss the possibility to change the physical environment to create a safer public space for women. This study is a case study focusing on the so called Stationstunneln located on Järnvägstorget in Umeå municipality. Stationstunneln was inaugurated in 2012 and had the aim to increase both women and men´s perceived safety in the public space. The tunnel has with its shape, lighting etcetera, aimed to increase security. This is as mentioned a gender issue and the topic is important to be able to continue the work for a more equal society. The result of this study is based on six semi-structured interviews and has a qualitative approach. The interviews were conducted with six female respondents who all have a relation to Stationstunneln in Umeå municipality. Three of the respondents also had a relation to the previous tunnel located on Järnvägstorget called Hagatunneln. The interviews have been analyzed through thematic analysis. The results of the study demonstrate that light and people in motion is the key factors in what makes the respondents feel safe in public spaces. All of the respondents agreed that Stationstunneln compared to Hagatunneln was seen as bright and had people in motion and that was some of the reasons why they felt safe in Stationstunneln. They also thought the place felt welcoming and safe when it comes to the trafic which also made them feel safe in and around the tunnel. However, many of the respondents said that they didn´t feel safe in and around the tunnel during the evenings because of the people occupying themself there at night. Overall, the respondents agreed that the design was important for their perceived safety in the public space. Keywords: Public space, safety, women, physical environment, tunnel, gender equality.

Abstract:
This thesis looks at the state of marriage equality activism in the wake of the Supreme Court’s June 26, 2013 decisions in United States v. Windsor and Hollingsworth v. Perry. Some scholars, such as Gerald Rosenberg, argue that Supreme Court decisions can never affect “significant social change,” either directly or indirectly, while others argue that such decisions can be hugely important in directly affecting policy. My focus is on how activist organizations, which have a substantial track record of directly affecting policy, are influenced by changes to the political environment stemming from major Court decisions regarding social issues. After examining how past litigative efforts such as Baehr v. Lewin and Goodridge v. Department of Public Health have affected the LGBT rights movement, and marriage equality activism specifically, I discuss how organizational strategies have changed minimally, but the political environment in which marriage equality activism is operating has shifted quite a bit, especially in terms of framing and legal precedent. I conclude that Court decisions can indeed have a significant impact on social change by affecting the way in which it is possible for activists on both sides of the issue to shape and deliver their message to the general public, legislators, and courts in future litigative efforts.

Abstract:

Abstract:

In this essay, the opportunities and obstacles of gender equality work were examined from a gender theory perspective. A survey was used, based on a questionnaire from the Equal Opportunities Ombudsman (JämO), which was complemented by qualititative interviews. The data was then analyzed in relation to the equal opportunities policy and staff policy of the corporation head quarters. The organization had a non-hierarchical structure and consisted of salaried employees, which was asumed to influence its gender contract – a concept derived from the theories of Hirdman. In order to examine the difference between the ideal of gender equality in the Swedish society and the gender equality in practice, two themes were used, the work environment in relation to gender and attitudes towards gender equality. The result showed an organization where gender equality was an unspoken ideal, while active work for it was lacking. In the company, a high degree of individual responsibility and an informal distribution of work were parts of the internal routines. The foremost opportunities for actively working for gender equality were the fact that both men and women were found at all levels of the company, and that individual competence was highly valued. Three obstacles were identified. Firstly, it was complicated for both managers and staff to define problems in terms of gender and gender equality issues. Secondly, those who called attention to problems risked losing important contacts and commissions. Thirdly, due to the constant time pressure and the lack of initiative from management in gender equality issues, the employees had to handle problems arising relating to gender on their own, depending on their own time and energy. Paradoxically, the adopting of the ideal of gender equality and the focus on individual competence prevented gender being seen as a factor that could affect the work environment. By that, inequalities relating to gender were hidden and thereby also the importance of active gender equality work.

Abstract:
The purpose of our essay is to investigate how preschool teachers take gender into account in the design of the physical environment at their preschool. We will examine this based on the following issues: How do preschool teachers use gender-coded material and how do they design an environment that is inviting both girls and boys? We also want to find out if the preschool teachers believe that the design of the room affects the creation of children's gender identity. Therefore, we have chosen to apply a qualitative method as it allows us to get closer to the subject area we want to investigate. The study has been demarcated, and consequently we have only studied three preschools in Stockholm. To gather our empirical material, we have chosen to interview five preschool teachers. We have also observed the physical indoor environment at three preschools. The result of our empirical material shows that all three preschools use gender-coded material. They also separated the material in defined areas. Based on the interview answers, we could see that preschool teachers work on gender equality and gender issues in different ways. We conclude that preschool teachers experience difficulties in carrying out gender equality work. Based on the research carried out by the Delegation for Gender Equality at Preschool, they address the difficulties that educators often face, as they look after the children's individual needs and ignore their gender. It can lead to gender blindness, and it counteracts successful gender equality work.

Abstract:
Equality and diversity legislation across the UK and Australia has stimulated the health profession sector to make workplace equality and diversity policies transparent to service users (Wadham et al.2010; RCN 2016; GMC 2016; WGEA 2012). However, research literature has identified inequalities within the healthcare workplace as reported by health professions students. Specifically, research has identified issues concerning identities (gender, age, sexuality etc.) adversely interplaying with students' workplace learning experiences (Rees & Monrouxe 2011; Illing et al. 2013;Monrouxe, Rees, et al. 2014). Such negative learning experiences (i.e.discrimination, abuse) have been found to affect students' retention and success (Northall et al. 2016). Despite research shedding light on these issues, studies have typically explored individual identities and demographics and neglected how students' intersecting identities shape their learning experiences, retention and success. Furthermore, research has only offered recommendations for enhancing retention and success of students, rather than exploring the issues affecting retention and success in health professions education. This thesis explicitly explores what and how multiple intersecting personal and professional identities shape healthcare students' learning, retention and success in the context of gendered environments and professions (i.e. male- and female-dominated contexts). Underpinned by social constructionist, narrative and feminist methodologies (Kitzinger 1995; Hunting 2014), I conducted a large secondary analysis on 2255 workplace learning experiences from across the UK and Australia as well as multiple health professions. To follow on from the secondary analysis, I led a multi-site longitudinal audio diary study across two sites in the UK, to explore health professional students' workplace learning experiences in the context of male- and female-dominated environments. Multiple cross-sectional and longitudinal qualitative approaches were employed to explore the data, including thematic, narrative, positioning, and case-study analytic methods. Novel findings from my thesis highlight how participants narrated their intersecting personal and professional identities within male- and female-dominated contexts. I found how recurrent tensions and power imbalances between intersecting identities, learning experiences and environments across time led to an adverse impact on healthcare participants' thoughts and reflections about their learning, retention and success in the health professions. Sensitising the participants to tensions concerning how they negotiate their intersecting personal and professional identities are valuable for understanding and influencing their retention and success. Furthermore, findings from my thesis provide critical recommendations to enhancing healthcare students' workplace learning, retention and success in the health professions, through incorporating intersectionality into healthcare education curricula. The recommendations made in this thesis contribute to helping understand and support a diversifying healthcare workforce and shed light on potential issues around healthcare workforce shortages, which can be addressed through enhancing health professions' educational policies and practice.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to define legal boundaries in order to establish environmental fiscal incentives. It required an analysis of the matter concerning environment constitutional management, due to the fact that the existing environment crisis demands the implementation of several tools to restraint pollution and inhibit the shortage of environment assets caused by current production and consumption standards. It is pointed out the final item of the command contained in the Art. # 170 of the Federal Constitution, whose norm included within the roll of the Economical Order principles directs towards differentiate handling of products and services, besides their related production processes in line with environment protection criteria. Also, the Art. # 225 of the 1988 Federal Constitution - included under the Title concerning Social Order - emphasizes the fact that both Government and Society are accountable for the preservation and defense of the environment and that an ecologically balanced environment is the right to present and future generations. Considering the stressed commands that refer to the general responsibility to support sustainable development in the country, this thesis assesses the way the State acts in the economy and the basis for intervening in the conduct of private citizens, aiming at promoting environment-oriented behavior. Following this line of thought and taking into account that taxes represent the States major source of income, thus absorbing large part of the country wealth, it is analyzed the extra-fiscal taxation range related to the concession of fiscal incentives to promote activities involving positive impact on the environment. Therefore, since Brazil is a Democratic and Social of Right State, ruled by a political Federal Constitution that comprehends several conflicting interests, goods and principles, the investigation of the boundaries to implement the fiscal incentives, in which this thesis is focused, is based upon thorough analysis of a great variety of constitutional directives. Its target is to identify, under the Brazilian judicial point of view, the foundations to allow that the fiscal law to support the ecological fiscal incentive substantiates an appropriate instrument to encourage environment-oriented actions, without restraining other constitutional objects, principles and values disproportionately, as equality and free competition principles, among others. As a consequence, based on the analyzed parameters, this thesis intends to demonstrate that the establishment of the institute therein proposed represents relevant tool to construct an economy founded on sustainability. Therefore, the expectation is that, at least, this work might contribute to the tax offices to promote more solid and accurate environmental fiscal incentives, and issue legal norms in order to consolidate the environment defense efficiently.

Abstract:
Interaction between parents and school has probably existed as long as there has been education for young people, albeit to different extent and with different starting points. Based on the past 80 years’ view on how and why teachers and parents should co-operate, the present structure for interaction between school and home is described based on critical realism and Eriksson’s (2004) principles for interaction between school and home. In the study, five qualified teachers working in upper secondary school are interviewed regarding their contacts with parents. The interviews are theoretically analyzed based on critical realism. Based on these interviews the current structure for interaction between school and home, the mechanisms affecting the structure and plausible effects which the current structure has on the equivalence of students and psycho-social work environment of teachers are mapped out. The results show that teachers and parents interact based on different principles, which results in lack of clarity regarding what the different participants can decide. This lack of clarity may lead to shortcomings regarding the equality of students and the psycho-social work environment of teachers. It is important that principals, teachers and others working in schools understand which mechanisms affect teachers when they interact with parents. For teachers, it may make it easier to make decisions which directly and indirectly involve the equivalence of students. Principals need to understand what teachers have to face in order to make the school a desirable workplace, to which more people are attracted.

Abstract:

Environmental impact assessment, EIA, is a tool used in Sweden and in 120 other countries and the process is used to predict environmental impact of different projects that are established. An EIA is always a prerequisite for certain projects in Sweden, for instance highway projects. The process aims to incoporate environmental aspects in projects and also to give the public and other interest groups the opportunity to voice their concerns and ask questions about the project. This is called public participation wich should take place during the entire EIA process. Sweden has laws that encourage public participation throughout the entire process, but research regarding gender equality and public participation called JämSam shows that elderly men are overrepresented at the public meetings. The purpose of this study is to examine if there is a discussion regarding gender equality and public participation in international EIA literature and, if so, what the articles encompass.

Different theories regarding gender equality were examined and they suggested that socialization is the cause of gender differences as women and men are treated diffrently throughout their entire lives. Gender equality and environment literature showed that women have a marginally higher intresst in environmental issues but that men are more active and participate more.

Very small amounts of material were found during the study, which shows that gender equality basically is nonexistent in EIA literature. The majority of the articles found only mentioned women or gender briefly and in relation to other subjects. Only one study found discussed the subject troughout the entire article. Further studies on gender equality in EIA literature and regarding making public participation gender equal is much-needed to initiate debate on this field, because the present situation does not move the discussion forward.

Abstract:
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reporting has become common practice for large organisations globally, yet there is variance in the CSR related activities claimed in disclosures. CSR researchers argue that cultural and historical backgrounds are the influential drivers of CSR behaviour. However, the links between actual activities claimed in CSR reports and the cultural systems that underpin these reported activities is an under-explored area. This thesis discusses the uniqueness of Japanese socio-cultural aspects. While Japan is well-known for having the most advanced energy efficient technologies in the world, it is also known for being below international standards for gender equality in the workplace. Therefore, this thesis aims to explore and examine organisational behaviours through the lens of relativism in order to understand what organisations are reporting and how and why managers prioritise these activities. This thesis is based on longitudinal qualitative research focusing on the Japanese transport companies that published CSR reports between 2005 and 2009. The findings from manually coded content analysis revealed: (1) that activities related to providing public safety, waste management and the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle), and environmental innovation were the top three most frequently reported CSR activities; and (2) complying with laws, career planning, flexible work practices, and providing public safety were the three categories that showed the most significant increase in reporting frequency from 2005-2009. This thesis extends the previous literature. Takagaki (2010b) identified that the transport industry, particularly the air and water sub-sectors, is the industry where the environmental problems are serious and require urgent attention. Takagaki (2010b) chose to explore the electronics industry as this industry is considered to be middle ground for its level of seriousness and urgency. This research: (1) examines the transport industry; (2) investigates the links between the actual activities reported, and the activities reported to be influential drivers of these activities.

Abstract:

This essay is part of a project between Södertörn University College and the Equality-project NättochJämt. The first aim of the study is to examine and analyse work environment and possibilities for internal movement by competence development from the view of Swedish Equality Law. The second aim is to interpret employees own gender equality measures from a gender perspective. Hirdman’s theory about gender structures and Johansson’s thoughts about segregation and integration have been used as a theoretical framework. The analyse is built on a questionnaire which has been answered by 101 employees in the organisation and handled in the statistic program SPSS. Written replies about how the organisations equality work can be developed is also analysed. This is related to the informal conversations with the employers, in which assumptions about gender inequalities has been unveiled. The result shows a shattered pattern where the relations concerning work environment inside the organization both coincide with and diverse from earlier research in work environment and gender area. Few people wanted to try work tasks that mainly are performed by other gender than thier own, with a preponderance of men. Both men and women wanted to develop their competence. The employees own suggestions, which for example concerns more women in leading positions, reveals a conception in which the male is norm and in which women are held as divergent and different. But also, suggestions which seem to be grounded in a gender perspective do occur. This is interpreted as a necessary prerequisite for future equality work.

Abstract:
The mental ill-health is a growing social problem and the cause to a third of the sick leaves. Organizational and social motives is the primary reason to occupational disease among women. Notwithstanding, work environment offense due to lacks in organizational and social work environment have never lead to conviction. The aim of the essay is to find an explanation to this matter, by examine the legal framework of work environment offense. To further contextualize the problem, a perspective of equality makes it possible to emphasize the differences of how men and women will be affected by the regulation. The subject is highly current, since binding regulations, AFS 2015:4, has been imposed since shortly one year ago. Therefore, an analysis of the value of this regulation in future prosecution has been done. The method of jurisprudence has been used to fulfil the aim of the essay. The results of the essay indicates that the review of work environment offense due to lacks in organizational and social work environment mainly causes problems when finding adequate causality. The primary reasons to this is related to the nature of stress and the legality principle. Stress can hardly be related to a separate variable, which makes it hard to prove it is strictly work related. This reason also makes it hard to legislate regulations that live up to the principle of legal certainly. In my power of judge, despite clearer regulation in AFS 2015:4, reviews of work environment offense will continue being problematic. The perspective of equality clearly shows that problems reviewing work environment offense due to lacks in organizational and social work environment to a great extent affects women in a negative matter.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to investigate how male employees experienced the Swedish Armed Forces as a workplace regarding gender equality and how they experienced the importance of having female colleagues. The method had a qualitative approach that consisted of semi-structured interviews. The sample involved five male Officers in the Swedish Armed Forces located in two places in Sweden. The interview material was analyzed by a thematic analysis method. The results were presented on the basis of the main categories: Internal gender equality work, external gender equality work and the importance of women in the Swedish Armed Forces. The main findings showed that the respondents experienced Swedish Armed Forces as an equal workplace based on the fact that they never experienced the opposite. They experienced that the Swedish Armed Forces actively are working with gender equality, both internally and externally. The respondents also said that their female colleagues are of great importance in order for Swedish Armed Forces to do their job. The conclusion is that male employees experience Swedish Armed Forces as a gender equal workplace while other studies showed that female employees did not. Therefore needs further research to understand why there is a difference in men's and women's experience

Abstract:
The planning, structure and shape of our urban environments affects our mindsets and perception of safety. The fear of being exposed to crimes causes many, especially women, to avoid certain public places completely. This proves the necessity of increasing and improving the mobility and safety for women in public spaces. This is the topic of this project, and the focus is on public toilets. The issue is relevant and it is based on the fact that cities traditionally have provided more toilets adapted to men (such as urinals), and existing toilets rarely being designed and equipped to fit the needs of women, girls and parents of young children. The purpose of this project is to improve the availability, design and experience of public restrooms. How can one, using design, improve the public space to feel more safe and accessible for men and women on equal terms.

Abstract:
This research addresses the so-called policies of diversity in education and their contribution to the recognition and promotion of human rights and the overcoming of racism, sexism, homophobia and other inequalities and discrimination that profoundly shape society and education in Brazil. Based on the voices of public sector managers and civil society activists, analysis of documents, budget execution, and the political experience of the researcher, this research presents a balance on the ten years of the Secretariat for Continuing Education, Literacy and Diversity (Secad), the Ministry of Education body established in the first government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. In particular, this thesis sought to identify the tensions generated by the agendas of diversities for the current design, operation and legal framework of the education policies and their influence on educational quality conceptions under dispute in federal policies. Disputes present in the National Conferences on Education and in the conflicting process during the discussion preceding the approval of the new National Education Plan (Federal Law n. 13,005/2014) are also analysed. Backed by international conventions and resolutions of United Nations conferences and national regulations, the debate over differences gained ground in the agenda of the Brazilian educational policies. This discussion was stimulated by social movements of black people, indigenous communities, LGBT, feminists, persons with disabilities, quilombolas, environmentalists and marginalized issues concerning the effectiveness of the human right to education, such as youth and adult education, the education in territories with high level of social vulnerability, and education of people deprived of their freedom, among other groups. It also presents a theoretical contribution to the debate on the relationship between educational quality, differences and equalities, based on the critical theories of social justice. Furthermore, the work discusses how the notion of diversity could be an inter-sectional response to multiple discrimination and inequalities that affect the concrete subjects in everyday life and, specifically, in educational institutions. At the end of the thesis, supported in the definition of the context of political strategy by Stephen Ball and contributions to improving the policies 16 contained in the analysis methodology on public policies, it shows reflections committed to expanding the capacity of educational policies to respond to these agendas, under a perspective of promoting justice in education within the human rights framework.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to evaluate whether the social environment of Swedish high school students affects their views on the multicultural society. The research material was collected through the use of two focus groups containing high school students from two different schools, one group is used to a multicultural social environment while the other group is used to a less multicultural social environment. With the researcher acting as a moderator in the focus groups, the students discussed different questions regarding multiculturalism, gender equality and religion. The theory that this research is based on suggests that the social environment and the social capital affects the students views on the multicultural society. The results of the research were evaluated and connected to the theory. The evaluated results were then further analyzed and two conclusions were made, first, that the social environments and the social capital has an affect on the students views on multiculturalism and second, that the educational system of the schools also affects the students and provides them with the elementary values that the society is based upon.

Abstract:

I undersökningen ingick fyra kvinnliga styrelseledamöter i KF.

Despite the fact that Sweden is one of the most equal societies in the world, the women are still underrepresented in the top positions in Swedish business world. This study is about female leadership in cooperative businesses. Leadership is a process where the purpose is to influence others regardless if that person has a formal leadership position or not. The purpose of this study is to describe and exemplify how female leaders in cooperative companies lead by giving insight in their experiences, family situation, career and their opinions about female leadership. For the purpose of the study interviews are conducted with four female board members of The Swedish Cooperative Union. The study shows that female leaders are strong, competent, democratic leaders who lead through open communication and teamwork. Female leaders think that a family is seen as potential obstacle in their careers. The study has shown that the keys to a successful career are: good contacts, taking a chance, actively show willingness and desire to advance, get a mentor, learn to say no and not to risk burning out in the beginning of the career.

Abstract:
Preschools have a responsibility to counteract gender patterns which restrictschildren’s development, choice, and education. The importance of the pedagogicalenvironment and the learning equipment available for shaping the identity ofchildren has been scientifically researched earlier by other researchers and showsthat the genus exposure which children are subject to in early years contributes tochildren’s genus-related expectations, norms and attitudes later in life. The purpose of the study is to examine how available equipment in preschools canbe viewed from a genus perspective, to investigate the current discussion amongst pre-school teachers around their genus-pedagogical work in order to present a closeto reality picture of how genus-pedagogical policy can be mirrored in the interioreducational environment. In this study four preschool-teachers in Southern Sweden are being interviewed andthe educational material available in their respective department is examined. The study takes a phenomenographic approach and the result is analysed with thehelp of Hirdman’s genus theory. The result of the study shows that there is a varietyof ways genus matters are being approached in today’s preschool learningenvironment. Three different genus strategies have been identified; environmentswhere stereotypes are included, a mixed approach to stereotypes and preschoolswhere stereotypes are being excluded. The result leads to a discussion about how children can be influenced in aneducational environment with or without stereotypical play materials. The study also reveals that the less learning material that has been observed in the department, the more influential the genus-pedagogical methodology is, and as a result, thegenus-related pedagogy becomes more prominent in the scheduled curriculum. The pedagogical implications arising from the study is the vital importance of genusconsciousness, the value of access to supporting pedagogues but also a strategicallyplanned educational environment in preschool which offers children possibilities toachieve broad spanning genus-related experiences for life.

The study is a qualitative literature analysis with the purpose of examining how children and preschool pedagogues were portrayed in picture books that take place in the preschool environment, based on gender perspectives. To define the material, books that take place in the preschool environment had been selected. The purpose of the study was also to examine how relationships between children and preschool pedagogues were portrayed, from a gender perspective. And whether there was a difference between the gender portrayals depending on the year when the book was published. The picture book analysis has created an understanding of how preschool pedagogues can work gender pedagogically with literature as a tool, together with the children. The analysis and the results have shown that there are variations in how gender and gender roles were portrayed in the picture books. It also showed that there are picture books that are gender conscious and that some maintain and enhance gender roles.

Abstract:
Background and problems: Through several studies it has emerged that unwelcome actions are a widespread problem within the Swedish Armed Forces. The women still do not have a clear place on all positions even though the Swedish Defense Monopoly's was closed in 1989. The formal network Network Officer/Employee Woman (NOAK) was introduced by the Swedish Armed Forces to handle issues concerning unwelcome actions, to serve as support and forums where women can discuss problems and exchange experiences. Method and purpose: This study aims to investigate how formal network can be beneficial or disadvantageous as a tool in the work of gender mainstreaming within an authority. The employees' experiences of the network as a tool will also be studied. Furthermore, the goal is to identify any underlying factors for the employees' experiences of the tool formal network through the social norms that affect everyone. This for research on formal networks is a tool that works in gender mainstreaming and how this should be further developed and improved. The study's results and conclusions have been based on semi-structured deep interviews with employees, literature review of previous research and internal documents from the Armed Forces. Results and conclusion: During the interviews it emerged that networks like NOAK can be good if it is designed in a way that has an understandable purpose for employees within the organization. In the current situation, there is no understanding and knowledge of the network and its purpose. The respondents stated that networks were something positive, even though they did not understand why they would participate in the NOAK meetings(Network Officer/Employee Woman). The underlying factors are primarily lack of knowledge of gender equality, purpose and unwillingness to participate in a "whining forum".

Danna, Charlotte. "Le principe de solidarité écologique." Thesis, Lyon, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018LYSE2070.

Full text
Abstract:
Adopted by article 2 from act nr 2016-1087 concerning the reconquest of biodiversity, nature and landscape of August 8th 2016, the principle of ecological solidarity calls “for taking into consideration the interactions of ecosystems, living creatures and natural or developed environments in all public decisions having a notable impact on the environment of the territories concerned”.This general principle of environmental law inscribed in article L110 1 of the environmental code is designed to preserve the interactions of ecosystems and ecological processes as well as to improve the environmental management of the territories. The duality of its objective renders it a highly valuable principle which should be applied to numerous decisions. Various supranational foundations, within jurisprudence and in international and European laws, can thus be assigned to it. In the context of ecological interdependence the evolution of the international and European dimension of the principle remains essential in order to see the benefits concerning the safeguarding of biodiversity. It is greatly enhanced, as regards internal law, by the fact that it is at the very center of the environment's equilibrium. It justifies the right to a balanced environment and extends the constitutional principles of prevention and sustainable development. Confronted with the crisis of world-wide biodiversity extinction that threatens our survival, the principle of ecological solidarity emerges as the last chance to preserve it. Two major groups of systems allow us to measure the dynamics of the principle of ecological solidarity: the green and the blue line belt network and the Ocean and coastline Governance Framework. They constitute a basis on which to develop ecological solidarity and represent the beginnings of new legislation. The principle of ecological solidarity requires them to be reinforced and more generally to advance all decisions concerned by the principle

Abstract:
Simple content analysis methods, such as the Bechdel test and measuring percentage of female talk time or characters, have seen a surge of attention from mainstream media and in social media the last couple of years. Underlying assumptions are generally shared with the gender role socialization model and consequently, an importance is stated, due to a high degree to which impressions from media shape in particular young children’s identification processes. For young girls, the Disney Princesses franchise (with Frozen included) stands out as the number one player commercially as well as in customer awareness. The vertical lineup of Disney princesses spans from the passive and domestic working Snow White in 1937 to independent and super-power wielding princess Elsa in 2013, which makes the line of films an optimal test subject in evaluating above-mentioned simple content analysis methods. As a control, a meta-study has been conducted on previous academic studies on the same range of films. The sampled research, within fields spanning from qualitative content analysis and semiotics to coded content analysis, all come to the same conclusions regarding the general changes over time in representations of female characters. The objective of this thesis is to answer whether or not there is a correlation between these changes and those indicated by the simple content analysis methods, i.e. whether or not the simple popular methods are in general coherence with the more intricate academic methods.

Abstract:
Inadequate and uncertain transportation funding have in recent years resulted in a renewed emphasis on using investments that can be recovered by toll charges to finance new roads and modernize existing roads. This has raised questions about environmental justice (EJ) and how it pertains to tolling. In 2004, TxDOT Project 0-5208 was funded to propose an approach for the identification, measurement, and mitigation of disproportionately high or adverse impacts imposed on minority and low-income (EJ) communities by toll roads relative to non-tolled facilities. The methodology proposed had two equally important components: an analysis/quantitative component and an effective EJ participation component. However, the research raised concerns about the ability of various available analytical tools and analysis techniques to measure the potential impacts imposed on EJ communities by toll roads relative to non-toll roads. The objective of this thesis study was to extend the work that was conducted under TxDOT Research Project 0-5208 by (a) reviewing the ability of available tools and analysis techniques to quantify and qualitatively describe the EJ impacts associated with toll road projects and toll road systems through an evaluation of state-of-the-practice applications, and (b) recommending a suitable approach to assess the EJ impacts of toll roads and toll road systems on EJ communities. The research conducted to meet the study objectives has culminated in this thesis.

With the advance of globalization, English is applied in various fields. Thus, English is not only a communicating tool, but also plays an important role in the world. In other words, there is a need to improve learner' English abilities. However, academic English is more difficult than common English. Therefore, learning academic English well is not a simple task. On the other hand, much research integrates technology-based tools into student learning. This is because that the technology is beneficial for educational settings so that learners can demonstrate better learning effectiveness. Among several innovative learning methods, game-based learning is the most popular learning approach. This might be due to the fact that game-based learning had various advantages to support student learning. Thus, this study integrates game-based learning into English learning to increase learners’ learning motivation and learning interest. However, game-based learning would provide rich multimedia elements and such rich multimedia elements would result in learners’ cognitive load. However, not all of the learners can cope with cognitive overload because there are individual differences among learners. Among various individual differences, gender differences especially are important because gender was a relatively fixed and not malleable variable. Besides, much research also indicated that the gender differences would really affect learners’ learning attitude in game-based learning. Therefore, there is a need to consider gender differences in game-based learning environments. To address this issue, this study aims to provide a gender quality game-based academic English learning system that can accommodate the preferences of males and females. Two empirical studies were included in this research. Study One aimed to investigate how males and females used a Prototype of game-based academic English learning system (PGBAELS). Based on the results from Study One, Study Two targeted to develop the revised game-based academic English learning system that could provide a gender quality. The results of Study One indicated that there were gender differences between males and females while using the PGBAELS. For example, males cared about the control and appearance of the system while using the PGBAELS. However, females focused on the function of the PGBAELS. The results of Study One were applied to redesign the game-based academic English learning system, i.e., RGBAELS, in Study Two. The results of Study Two showed that gender differences were reduced between males and females while using the RGBAELS, in terms of learning perception or learning performance. In addition, males and females showed similar and different learning behaviors, in terms of learning behavior. Regarding different learning behavior, males and females had different preferences while using the RGBAELS. For instance, males would use various hints to answer the question while females only used a single kind of hint. In other words, males and females could use different strategies to complete the same learning tasks. In summary, this research contributes to develop a deep understanding of how to design game-based academic English learning system that can accommodate gender differences. By doing so, the goal of providing gender equality contexts can be realized.

This study comprises two parts: The first explores gender equality in the working environment and whether differences exist among different types of organizations; the second part employs the equity theory to explore the impact on work attitude and work stress when people become aware of unfairness in their treatment relative to the other gender. The findings of the first part show that there is discrimination against women in Taiwan’s work environment, but larger, more female, publicly-owned and service trade industry organizations engage in gender discrimination to a lesser extent than other sectors. In another aspect of this study, we found that the employee awarness of equitable treatment for both genders increases employee job satisfaction and organizational commitment, while decreasing employee work-family conflict. The findings, however, did not support a finding that employee awarness of equitable treatment for both genders will impact an employee’s intention to quit or work stress. The findings also showed employee awarness of equitable treatment for both genders correlated positively with the gender equality of work environment. According to all these findings, this study suggests that if an organization wants to increase employee awarness of equitable treatment for both genders, in order to increase employee job satisfaction and organizational commitment, while decreasing work-family conflict, with the organization should begin by increasing gender equality in the work environment.

Abstract:
In the last two decades, the discussion about the theme of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been growing at the pace of changes imposed by globalization, which has brought new awareness not only to companies but also to society in general about the need to guarantee individual and collective rights, without including the sustainability of life on earth. Nowadays, the conception that a successful company is only interested in obtaining profit without attending to social responsibility to its stakeholders is outdated. In fact, this social responsibility will be a vehicle of appreciation of the company, giving customers greater loyalty and confidence in the products. In the background, it conveys a good image of the company, also associated with quality. There are other issues that are linked to corporate social responsibility, including ethical, economic and environmental issues that can be considered as fundamental in the implementation of the social responsibility policy. The results of our study on the case of BNP Paribas Corporate Social Responsibility show that the strategy is based on 4 pillars of intervention (Economy, Bank Staff, Community, Environment). The projects developed in each of the pillars constitute lines of force with international repercussions of great impact in all business areas of BNP Paribas and with all the stakeholders of the banking institution. From the actions outlined here, we will highlight the issue of equality between men and women within the workplace and the environmental sustainability action package. We can also verify that the dynamics developed by the Bank have earned him international awards and prizes, granted by the most prestigious organizations for the quality of life of the human being and the sustainability of the planet Earth itself.

Abstract:
Online gendered collectivities like the Manosphere (an online collection of blogs, forums, and chat spaces devoted to shedding light on perceived social misandry) have provided opportune spaces for regressive forms of gendered organizing to occur. These spaces offer individuals an online network of safe spaces dedicated to antifeminism, misogyny, and pick-up artistry. While Manosphere networks have gained attention with their connections to the emerging Alt-Right activism online, these spaces have been legitimized in and throughout specific social networking platforms. For instance, sites like Reddit (dubbed the ‘Internet Culture Laboratory’) have become known as a hotbed of misogynist behaviors fostered and shared on comment threads and its subcommunities (known as subreddits).

Whereas previous scholarship pertaining to the Manosphere and The Red Pill have described the larger technocultural spaces that contribute to an increasingly toxic online world, less studied is how these organizations are organized—particularly with a focus on gendered organizing. SubReddits may adopt and take organizational forms wherein organizing occurs primarily through communicative engagement between users in the spaces (e.g., sharing posts, commenting on posts, and supporting some ideas over others through Reddit’s ‘upvote’ currency system). Over time, spaces like The Red Pill are networked, enacted, and organized. With an aim of understanding how organizational identity is organized and enacted on The Red Pill’s subreddit, this study analyzed the Top 100 posts of all time (over 35,000 comments and roughly 6,000 pages of text data) from The Red Pill to understand how conversations and content enacted a masculine organizational identity.

Using a multi-level analysis, this dissertation examines members’ text-based engagement, the social network, and types of roles influencers adopt to construct an organizational identity for r/TheRedPill. Using the comment threads from the Top 100 posts of all time, text mining and semantic networks were generated to understand how members of r/TheRedPill construct meanings and concepts focused on the organizational identity of the space. Second, using social network analyses, this dissertation illustrated the networks of influence of central users within r/TheRedPill. With a goal of understanding the roles that central users adopted, the dissertation adopted an online observation of the space to create a typology of leadership roles within r/TheRedPill. The findings uncovered three distinct contradictory themes focused on masculinity, sexual activity, and backlash that were central to organizing in The Red Pill. In addition to these three themes, the social network analysis and observation revealed distinct roles that influencers adopted to promote the organizational identity of r/TheRedPill.

Theoretically, the dissertation contributes to the Communicative Constitution of Organizing online by showcasing how the interconnections between conversations around gender, sexual activity, and backlash ‘scale up’ to construct a gendered organizational identity. Methodologically, this dissertation utilizes multiple levels of analysis to investigate online organizational activity. Pragmatically, these findings help provide a rich portrait of alternative forms of gendered organizing that occurs online. Future directions include examining the broader Red Pill network on Reddit, as well as examining contrastive spaces (e.g., r/TheBluePill or r/ThePurplePill) to investigate how members’ discursive engagement organizes and constitutes organizational activity as a response to r/TheRedPill.

Cullen, Craig. "Connection modelling as a mechanism for addressing social inequality in Durban's peri-urban built environment : a proposed public transport hub." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/11338.

Abstract:
South Africa boasts such intrinsic beauty in its social and physical geography and at the heart of this beauty lie its people. For each culture that has fought for their beliefs and systems, wars have been fought and lives have been lost. One thing which remains constant however is the belief that we the people can work together to live in peace and harmony and leave a better place to those who come after. Apartheid South Africa was divisive in many ways and its results have left many wounds on the country’s architectural geography. Social inequality is manifest in the tapestry of everyday life and the Peri-Urban scars of our past have become vivid thresholds of crosscultural debate. The Apartheid planning model of disconnection through race and class has seen a massive effort to refocus on Durban’s urban core, whereas the rich tapestry of the Peri-Urban townships is often neglected. In order to reconnect the outer city geographies back into the urban whole an investigation into the theory of connection between people and their physical environment needs to be undertaken. This dissertation looks at how the theory of connection might enable a unified Durban and rehabilitate the tenderness of past planning processes. Public Transport is one such mechanism which can connect communities, no matter the distance nor socio-economic status and it is within this context that the dissertation offers new insight into the critical and exciting reconnection process.
