Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the possible effects of corporate environmental activities on sustainable competitive advantage through the mediation of leadership factors and effective implementation strategies. Design/methodology/approach The work is essentially non-empirical review of the literature with the development of a conceptual model which can be tested in a later study. Findings The study proposes that corporate environmental activities can give firms competitive advantage. The studies also propose that stakeholders can act as pressure thereby moderating the relationship between corporate environmental activities and sustainable competitive advantage. Leadership factors and effective implementation affect competitive advantage. Research limitations/implications This study has a few limitations that must be considered and could provide guidance for future study; as this study does not address customers point of view, future study could help in the investigation in order to get a holistic view. Moreover, the study is based on the literature, and the conceptual model has not been tested. Practical implications The study proposes that good leadership and effectiveness in strategy implementation can make corporate environmental activities lead to sustainable competitive advantage. The findings of the study provide managers of firms with a possible tool in creating sustainable competitive advantage. Originality/value Despite the rapid growth in research on environmental issues in corporate world, limited studies have been conducted on how leadership factors and effectiveness of strategy implementation can influence how corporate environmental activities affect competitiveness of firms. This study makes an original contribution by proposing strategies for sustainable competitive advantage through the instrumentality of corporate environmental decisions.

Abstract:
The authors propose a conceptual model of the drivers, moderators, and outcomes of a firm's effective import strategy, anchored on the dynamic capabilities and industrial organization theories. Whereas the former theory explains the mechanism through which dynamic capabilities facilitate import strategy effectiveness, which boosts competitive advantage and ultimately enhances financial performance, the latter theory sets the foundation for explaining the contingency role of both competitive intensity and environmental uncertainty on translating effective import strategy into competitive advantage. The model was tested using a sample of 151 small and medium-sized British importers, with results indicating that high levels of certain dynamic capabilities of a generic (i.e., adaptive and entrepreneurial) and import-specific (i.e., source identification and market development) nature are conducive to import strategy effectiveness. Study results also revealed that import strategy effectiveness generates both a product-differentiation advantage and a low-cost advantage, although this is contingent on the degree of competitive intensity and environmental uncertainty prevailing in the importer's home market. Finally, the study confirmed that both productdifferentiation advantage and low-cost advantage have a favorable impact on the importer's financial performance.

Abstract:
Many hospitals in Taiwan have started to encounter new and fierce competition as a result of the enactment of the National Health Insurance Policy in 1995. Hospitals should strive to use information technology (IT) strategically to improve their competitive advantage and meet the dynamic challenges in this competitive environment. This study adopts the Technology-Organization-Environment framework to understand the effects of contextual factors (e.g., environmental uncertainty and information intensity) and information service competence on the effectiveness of strategic information systems planning (SISP) to improve hospital management efficiency. A field survey was conducted using questionnaires distributed to accredited hospitals that serve patients from different regions/districts and with academic teaching qualifications/capabilities. These hospitals represent approximately a quarter of all hospitals in Taiwan. The findings show that the environmental unpredictability and business competence of IS executives are negatively related to the two SISP constructs: IT participation in the hospital planning and alignment of the IT plan with the comprehensive hospital plan. In addition, the findings demonstrate that information intensity has a significantly positive relation to both aforementioned SISP constructs. Finally, both constructs justify the significant positive correlations with the use of IT in increasing competitive advantages and improving the satisfaction of customers and end users. This research intends to guide the healthcare industry in raising competitive advantages to improve the operational efficiency of hospital management in today's highly digitalized environment.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of human capital (HC) on service innovation advantage (SIA) and business performance (BP) in service sector firms, and how external environmental factors influence these relationships. Design/methodology/approach This study utilized a cross-sectional mail survey of a random sample of Australian service firms with the unit of analysis being at the firm level. In total, 228 usable responses were received. Findings The overall findings of this study show that HC is positively related to the creation of value or SIA which in turn results in rent generation for firms. The results further show that the effect of SIA on BP is influenced by environmental dynamism and competitiveness with dynamic environments enhancing the effect while competitive environments weakening it. Research limitations/implications The findings demonstrate the complementarity between the resource based theory and contingency theory as they clearly shows that the value of innovation as a firm’s capability is enhanced or weakened within a business environment that is more dynamic or competitive. Practical implications The findings demonstrate the importance of HC, and, thus, encourage managers to seek ways to harness and leverage HC for improving innovation and BP. In addition, the study also helps managers to understand the contingency effect of business environment on the effectiveness of innovation, hence, helping them in deliberating firms’ strategy in different business environments. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study which examines the effectiveness of HC as organizational resource for building SIA as a source of organizational competitive advantage.

Abstract:
The paper presents a comprehensive study of the theoretical foundations of hotel enterprises’ adaptation in a competitive environment, including the formulated the concept of adaptation in terms of management. The paper also identifies and describes three aspects of the term "adaptation" in relation to objects of the hospitality industry. The author formulats the concept of adaptive competitive strategies of hotel companies, describes the basic competitive strategy options proposed by M. Porter: absolute cost leadership, differentiation, focus, which, according to the author, are potentially successful. These competitive strategies contribute to a sustainable position of a company in the industry for the long term and to achieve advantages over competitors. The author of the article reveals major shortcomings in the formation of competitive strategies of adaptation for hotel companies and suggests a model for the formation of adaptive competitive strategy facilities for the hospitality industry, which relies on the process approach, including the separation of the primary process into a series of sub-processes that have data inputs and outputs. The use of this model for the formation and adjustment of competitive strategies will allow hotel companies to develop effective adaptation competitive strategies to achieve sustainable and profitable position, enabling to resist to the pressures of the competitive forces that must and can determine the competition in the industry, to provide a rapid response to external hotel business changes and to implement responsive actions, and which also can help existing hotel companies to withdraw from the zone of instability and competitively operate in not always positive environmental conditions and to ensure a competitive advantage and long-term effectiveness of the hospitality market.

Abstract:
Maintaining legitimacy through environmental management practices and green innovation is often seen as less supportive of the company's efforts to improve performance and competitive advantage. This paper aims to analyse the legitimacy motivation of companies participating in the performance rating assessment program in environmental management (PROPER). Another goal is to find out the effectiveness of the motive to maintain legitimacy in improving environmental performance and competitive advantage. The document analysis employs to analyse data. The findings indicate that maintaining the legitimacy of stakeholders is the motivation for manufacturing companies to carry out environmental management and green innovation. The data also suggest that maintaining legitimacy from a wider range of stakeholders brings more tangible economic and non-economic benefits, such as higher environmental performance and competitive advantage, compared to focusing solely on maintaining legitimacy from the government. The findings also show that the PROPER deconcentration policy which is being promoted to improve supervision of companies in environmental management by involving the provincial government, companies and universities is effective in increasing the number and compliance of companies in environmental management. However, the government needs to look for breakthroughs so that companies apply environmental practices beyond compliance by considering several points from the criteria or requirements for exceeding compliance in article 6, such as the implementation of environmental management systems, achieving energy efficiency, saving water, reducing and utilizing waste. non-hazardous materials and solid waste, are transferred to the criteria or compliance requirements in article 5.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the capabilities of social entrepreneurship (SE) firms and how they achieve competitive advantage while engaging in social value creation. The authors employ a business model perspective to understand the (self-) sustaining mechanism for social good. Design/methodology/approach – The authors carry out an in-depth investigation of three SE ventures. The authors analyse the history of these ventures to determine how they achieved competitive advantage. The cases are analysed based on the internal development in the context of environmental support. Findings – The authors find that SE ventures, like all other organisations, achieve competitive advantage based on available resources such as reputation and network of the founder, managerial experience and other corporate resources within the firm. The authors also find that the competitive advantage often comes from innovate usage – a practice that is reinforced by the support from institutional environment. Research limitations/implications – Due to the case study approach, the research is aimed at theoretical development within the social business literature. The approach makes it difficult for the findings to be universally generalisable. The authors therefore envisage future researchers to test the theoretical propositions. Practical implications – Based on the analysis, the authors conclude that distinct capabilities of social businesses help them achieve competitive advantage, and that policy makers should institutionally support these ventures. The findings stress the importance of resources in sustainability and effectiveness of emerging market SE. Originality/value – The application of a business model perspective in SE is unique, and advances the understanding of social businesses from a strategic management perspective.

Abstract:
Owing to the housing design’s booming development and fierce competition among industry players, there have been many sensational designs that have not met the requirements of sustainable living, resulting in a serious waste of resources. Therefore, finding the critical factors of sustainable housing design with competitive advantages, and establishing an effective evaluation model along with helping operators make adequate decisions is the imperative topic at present. This study aimed to develop an evaluative model of such competitive advantages focusing on sustainable housing design, with 15 evaluation factors found through literature analysis, delivering 500 questionnaires of the Analytical Hierarchy Process development for housing design customers. A total of 390 were retrieved for a response rate of 78% and 327 are valid questionnaires. The factors listed in sequence are Cost Effectiveness, Tender Reputation and Word of Mouth, Green Materials, Culture and Folk Beliefs, Energy Saving, Energy Recovery, Easy Maintenance, Service Accessibility, Optimal Housing for Preserving Health, Customer Participating Experience, Schedule Control for Design and Engineering, Regulation Compliance, Core Competencies, Identity Representation, Low Operation Cost. Utility theory was then employed to develop a customer-oriented assessment model. Finally, four case studies of housing design were examined with different locations, environments, human qualities, and budgets. The results found that the benefit of the location in a favorable environment was the highest, while the location near the river and the tomb area was the lowest. As mentioned above, the designer needs to create a solution for the influences of Culture and Folk Beliefs, as well as the uneasy maintenance problems caused by the high humidity near the river. Accordingly, there are different responses made for different conditions of houses from designers. Furthermore, the evaluation model can serve as a tool, supporting decision-making related to sustainable housing designers.

Abstract:
PurposeThough enormous research studies were conducted on corporate environmental responsibility (CER), few of them could empirically justify how CER helps to improve firm’s competitive advantage and firms are still hesitant to incorporate CER with their business strategy at present. The purpose of this paper is to theoretically and empirically explore how the CER strategy could help the firm to gain competitive advantage in Chinese context, particularly in terms of achieving brand sustainability (BS).Design/methodology/approachIn this study, 310 listed companies in China were chosen as research sample. First, the CER strategies were classified into developing eco-friendly products, adopting EMAS or other eco-management, enhancing the impact of CER through value chain and charitable CER. Second, BS is constructed as two dimensions, i.e. resource-acquisition and consumer impact. Accordingly, this paper analyzed the relationship between CER and BS with regression model analysis, taking account of several moderating and control variables.FindingsThe results indicate that CER strategies have positive effect on BS. Among all CER strategies, developing eco-friendly products and charitable CER undertakings are the most effective ones to promote BS performance. Also, the paper found that the length of time in adopting CER strategy moderates the effect of CER on BS. The empirical evidence proves that CER strategies could enhance the brand value in terms of BS and help the company to gain competitive advantage.Research limitations/implicationsFirst, most of our samples are of the state-owned enterprises, so our assumption might not be applicable to other types of business. Second, corporate social responsibility (CSR) communication is an important factor in the relation between CSR and corporate performance, but it is not taken into account in this study. Third, the difference in industries and ownership in this research is out of concern.Practical implicationsAs this paper has provided empirical evidence to reveal the effectiveness of different CER strategies, firms in China could be more motivated to undertake CER not only for the sake of environment but also for their brand value and competitive advantage. More importantly, this paper could be a valuable reference for the firms in China to choose suitable and effective CER strategies, as proved in this study, to gain competitive advantage in the market.Originality/valueAt first, while public environmental awareness has improved gradually, we introduce the BS concept to explain how the CER strategies affect CCA. This approach gives us another perspective to highlight the relationship between these two constructs. Second, we conducted our research from practical perspective to explore how to apply the CER undertakings as the company’s strategy. Third, we conducted our empirical research in Chinese context, which will enrich the theoretical CER and CSR literature.

Abstract:
Outsourcing to third party to manage non-core activities helps the firm to focus on core activities. Manufacturing firms are outsourcing product development, manufacturing, logistics, customer care etc. to enhance production capacity and flexibility, and to reduce operational costs, which in turn can improve profitability and competitive advantage of the enterprise. Sustainability in operations and supply chain is gaining momentum due to increased global environmental concern, pressures from consumers and communities, and enforced regulations. Volatile and uncertain business environment necessitates the adoption of agility and flexibility to effectively manage manufacturing and supply chain. Globalisation has made the market very competitive and hence manufacturing firms are adopting manufacturing outsourcing to third parties. Selecting a sustainable and agile manufacturing outsourcing partner (MPS) is crucial as it will improve sustainability, efficiency, and effectiveness of the supply chain and competitive advantage to the firm. Detailed literature review on sustainable and agile manufacturing outsourcing partner selection has been carried out from EBSCO data base and Goggle scholar. Selection criteria used are classified into agile, operational, economic, environmental and social. The techniques use are mostly multi criteria decision making methods (MCDM) while few have adopted programming techniques. Discussion, implication and the scope of future work is also provided.

Abstract:
Global warming is a major reason for dramatic climate changes around the world. Among various renewable energy sources, solar energy is one of the most promising for environmental protection and natural resource scarcity resolution. With the technical advantages obtained from the semiconductor and TFT-LCD industries, the Photovoltaic (PV) industry in Taiwan can achieve a solid global position. Current PV products, however, still face a large obstacle due to high production cost and low PV conversion efficiency. An important source of competitive advantage, survival and renewal for firms in todays competitive market is successful new product development (NPD). PV firms need to carry out effective R&D in order to improve product quality and to obtain cost effectiveness. This research, thus, constructs a comprehensive model, which comprises fuzzy Delphi method (FDM) and quality function deployment (QFD), for implementing a NPD project for a PV manufacturer. The proposed model shall help designers to systematically consider relevant NPD information and reconcile tradeoffs among various performance characteristics in a fuzzy environment.

Abstract:
More than 90 capsular serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae coexist despite competing for nasopharyngeal carriage and a gradient in fitness. The underlying mechanisms for this are poorly understood and make assessment of the likely population impact of vaccination challenging. We use an individual-based simulation model to generalize widely used deterministic models for pneumococcal competition and show that in these models short-term serotype-specific and serotype non-specific immunity could constitute the mechanism governing between-host competition and coexistence. We find that non-specific immunity induces between-host competition and that serotype-specific immunity limits a type's competitive advantage and allows stable coexistence of multiple serotypes. Serotypes carried at low prevalence show high variance in carriage levels, which would result in apparent outbreaks if they were highly pathogenic. Vaccination against few serotypes can lead to elimination of the vaccine types and induces replacement by others. However, in simulations where the elimination of the targeted types is achieved only by a combination of vaccine effects and the competitive pressure of the non-vaccine types, a universal vaccine with similar-type-specific effectiveness can fail to eliminate pneumococcal carriage and offers limited herd immunity. Hence, if vaccine effects are insufficient to control the majority of serotypes at the same time, then exploiting the competitive pressure by selective vaccination can help control the most pathogenic serotypes.

Abstract:
During this pandemic crisis, supply chain management (SCM) has emerged as a critical source of competitive advantage driving organizational performance, especially in the agri-food sector, since public health and consumers’ confidence as well as firms’ survival depend on the effectiveness of supply chain networks. This study adopts two central SCM practices, namely strategic suppliers’ partnerships and partners’ information quality & sharing and tests their relationships with competitive advantage (quality, process flexibility, and time to market) and business performance (profitability and market share), based on an empirical study of 300 enterprises in the agri-food sector in Greece. After data collection, we deploy a diagnostic-exploratory model, utilizing fuzzy cognitive mapping, with agent-based modeling following up for development for data prediction and simulation. Consequently, we found that supply chain firms’ compelling and robust relationships with supply chain partners and suppliers can promote their profitability and market share. Relationships of this kind focus on quality information sharing and are strongly connected with businesses’ quality, process flexibility, and time to market competitive capabilities. Hence, our study provides salutary info to supply chain firms regarding potential implementation to existing and new collaborators.

Abstract:
Increasing globalization and rapid digitization across industries have led to greater international competition. Furthermore, the emergence of new innovation has created both challenges and opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). SMEs have recently been attracted to social media applications to reach a larger audience, improve their relationship with potential customers, and retain existing customers. However, the scant focus has been devoted to comprehensively understanding the adoption of social media in the SME context in developing countries. This study investigates the effects of technological-organizational-environmental (TOE) factors on social media adoption and its effect on SME performance. Data was collected by generating online survey link. SmartPLS 3.3 was used for the path analysis of 381 SMEs. The findings revealed a significant effect of relative advantage, cost-effectiveness, compatibility, interactivity (technological), entrepreneurial orientation (organizational), and customer pressure (environmental) factors, and an insignificant effect of top management support (organizational) and competitive pressure (environmental) determinants on social media adoption. The study found a significant influence of social media on SME performance. This paper offers several implications for decision-makers, policy-makers, and scholars interested in social media and its use. It builds an empirical, integrated framework for SMEs in developing countries.

Abstract:
Globally, health workforce shortages in rural and remote areas significantly affect the capability of health systems, both public and private, to deliver their services. Regional and national governments and academic and professional bodies have been active in attempting to address the situation. This paper overviews the extensive human resources literature on recruitment and retention. Findings are contrasted with recent Australian and international research literature investigating health workforce issues. The context of rural health service delivery, workforce issues and recruitment and retention strategies implemented are discussed. Recruitment and retention issues for the rural and remote health workforce would be well understood if human resources knowledge was applied to the problem. However, few retention strategies were identified other than for general practitioners and no analyses of their effectiveness could be found. Health employers need to use the body of knowledge developed in the business sector to implement recruitment and retention strategies consistently, evaluate them and report the findings. "Silos" created by a sector or discipline-specific approach can be broken down by seeking knowledge from a number of disciplines. Health research can then focus on developing models of health care that address professional and community needs.

Abstract:
Graphene serves as the most disruptive material in the twenty-first century and plays an unsubstitutable role in solving the sustainable development problems of energy crises, water shortages, and environmental pollution. Recently, obtaining a sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) in the field of graphene has gained increasing attention from both researchers and practitioners. However, few attempts have been made to summarize the SCA of this field by applying patent information. Basing on a patent-based multi-level perspective (MLP), this study aims to develop an approach to identify SCA in the target technological area by conducting a patent review from the comprehensive perspectives of the macro landscape, meso socio-technical system, and micro niches, and then integrate patent analysis with technology life cycle (TLC) theory to examine patents involving global technological competition. The effectiveness of the approach is verified with a case study on graphene. The results show that the graphene field is an emerging and fast-growing technological field, with an increasing number of patents over the year. The TLC of graphene technology demonstrated an approximate S shape, with China, the U.S., Korea, and Japan filing the largest number of graphene patents. Evidenced by Derwent Manual Codes, we found an increase in consideration given to technological application and material preparation topics over time, and research hotspots and fronts that have SCA. In terms of a leading country or region with SCA, the U.S., with a high foreign patent filing rate, large number of high forward citation patents, strong assignees’ competitive position, and large number of high-strength patents, was still the most powerful leader, with a higher SCA in the graphene industry. Korea also obtained a relatively higher SCA and will be a promising competitor in this field. Although China was shown to be catching-up very rapidly in the total number of graphene patents, the apparent innovation gaps in the foreign patent filing rate, high value patents, and Industry-University-Research Collaboration will obviously hamper Chinese catch-up efforts for obtaining SCA. As for patentees, the most powerful leaders with a higher SCA represented by Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, International Business Machines Corp, and Nanotek Instruments Inc were identified. In addition, most of the high strength patents were owned by the above patentees. Further, valuable contributions to the understanding of SCA in graphene technology were summarized. First, the proposed patent-based MLP provides a new and comprehensive analytical framework for review research, as well as SCA analysis, and extends its research perspectives. Second, it introduces patent indicators to the previous MLP model, and provides a new theoretical perspective for the study of technological innovation in the previous MLP model. Third, this paper employs the TLC theory to explore the dynamic SCA in the given technology field, which further develops the concept of the MLP model from the temporal dimension. Finally, future research directions were demonstrated. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first systematic review of this field using patent analysis, comprehensively acknowledging the current technological competition and development in the graphene field and that of the future, and can be applied to various other emerging technology fields.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the main methodological aspects of greening as a prerequisite for regional development, identifies indicators of environmental safety and sustainability, which in the author's opinion are: emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere; discharge of polluted return waters into surface water bodies, waste generation, investments in environmental protection. The strategic course chosen by Ukraine for integration into the European community requires harmonization of the institutional environment with EU countries, provided effective management decisions are made at the national, subnational and local levels, use and rational use of available resource potential to gain competitive advantage in all spheres of social development. The realities of state-building have convincingly demonstrated the need to green regional development as an unconditional requirement for the modernization of productive forces. The possibility of analyzing evaluation factors with destabilizing content and thosethat are able to balance them and to some extent improve the environmental situation is indicated.Among the previously mentioned assessment factors with destabilizing content, indicators that are able to balance them and to some extent improve the environmental situation become especially acute. Such an indicator that characterizes the ability of the regions of Ukraine to withstand pollution of air, water and other natural resources is the capacity of treatment plants.Emphasis is placed on greening as a special determinant of modernization of the institutional basis of regional development in the context of decentralization of power. It is noted that these indicators have an impact on the effectiveness of the national strategy for inclusive sustainable development. The author emphasizes that with the reduction of economic and social indicators of regional development, the presence of fierce competition, the need to intensify innovation and investment activities, including in the environmental sphere, as an important component of modernizing the productive forces of regions, effective way to equalize regional competitiveness and further development. inclusive conditions.

Abstract:
This paper examines the current challenges faced by logistics with a focus on the agri-food sector. After outlining the context, a review of the literature on the relationship between logistics and strategic management in gaining and increasing competitiveness in the agri-food sector is conducted. In particular, the flow of the paper is as follows: after examining the aforementioned managerial problem and its broader repercussions, the paper proceeds to address two main research questions. First, how and by which tools can digitization contribute to improving supply chain management and sustainability in logistics? Second, what are the main managerial and strategic implications and consequences of this for the agri-food sector in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, cost reduction, and supply chain optimization? Finally, the paper presents Italy as a case study, chosen both for its peculiar internal differences in logistical infrastructures and entrepreneurial management between Northern and Southern regions (which could be at least partially overcome with the use of new technologies and frameworks) and for the importance of the agri-food sector for the domestic economy (accounting about 25% of the country’s GDP), on which digitization should have positive effects in terms of value creation and sustainability.

Purpose: on the basis of video recordings of the 2022 World Championship, to conduct an analysis of the competitive activity of highly qualified female athletes in freestyle wrestling. Material and methods. The following methods were used to solve the research tasks: analysis of scientific and methodological information and Internet networks, generalization of best practical experience, analysis of protocols and video recordings of matches (fight for first and third places and semi-finals) of highly qualified freestyle wrestlers at the 2022 World Championship in Serbia. A total of 50 bouts of sportswomen were analyzed. The method of mathematical statistics was used for the purpose of qualitative study of the results of conducted research and establishment of statistical regularities. Results: the analysis of scientific and methodical information, Internet sources and generalization of best practical experience made it possible to establish that the problem of studying competitive activity in modern sports wrestling is one of the most relevant. Based on the analysis of the competitive performance of highly qualified wrestlers, 11 main technical and tactical actions were selected, which are most often used: rollovers (12,3 %), hand and head grabs (5,0 %), shin cross grabs (5,6 %)), back belt throws (1,7 %), reverse belt flips and throws (1,7 %), floor counters (8,3 %), ground floor transfers (27,9%), back flip throws (3,9 %), knockdowns (16,2 %), push-ups behind the carpet (10,1 %), counters in the rack (7,3 %). It was established that highly qualified wrestlers have: average attack efficiency in the rack (56 %) and parterre (58 %); above average efficiency of protection in standing (79 %) and parterre (77 %); performance is better in the rack (3.81 points) than in the parterre (2,39 points); the average score in the rack (3,80 points) is higher than in the parterre (2,17 points); attack interval (66 s), and successful attack interval (98 s); 44 % of the fights ended prematurely. Conclusions. It was determined that the indicators of technical and tactical preparedness of highly qualified freestyle wrestlers are lower in the second period than in the first, in addition to the effectiveness of defense in the rack and parterre, this is explained by the fact that in most fights one of the athletes was given an advantage in the first period, and in the second period, this advantage was maintained thanks to defensive actions. The obtained data indicate the importance of the technical and tactical preparation of athletes as a factor that determines success in various types of sports. Abstract:
Reverse transcriptase - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) has been used extensively to detect enteric viruses in environmental samples. Advantages of RT-PCR include its high detection sensitivity and rapid turn-around time. However, unlike traditional cell culture, RT-PCR has not provided quantitation and infectivity information. In this study, we have developed a quantitative RT-PCR method that can be used to determine the amount of poliovirus RNA in environmental samples. An RNA internal standard for poliovirus RT-PCR was designed and obtained through genetic engineering. Serial dilutions of RNA internal standard templates were amplified with a 5 prime -carboxyfluorescein-labeled poliovirus downstream primer and a nonlabeled poliovirus upstream primer in the RT-PCR. The fluorescent light intensity of labeled RT-PCR products was quantified using an ABI DNA sequencer with GeneScan software. The internal standard was coamplified with poliovirus in the RT-PCR, allowing for enumeration of the poliovirus RNA present in the seawater and sewage samples. This method, using a cloned internal standard and specified primers in the PCR, may be applied to quantify other microorganisms in environmental samples. Although quantitative RT-PCR has begun to be used more extensively for detecting pathogens in clinical samples, the complex nature of many environmental samples has limited the sample range of the effectiveness of quantitative RT-PCR.Key words: quantitative RT-PCR, poliovirus, sewage, seawater.

Abstract:
Today’s competitive and highly volatile environment calls for a new kind of flexibility and adaptability. Limited studies are available that examine how firms achieve both speed and creativity requirements in this digital era. In view of the rare empirical studies on real-world cases that apply rigorous research methods for sustainable digital innovation (SDI), this research investigates the key strategic requirements of organizational agility and flexibility for SDI. The research framework defines four types of innovators. This study used the benchmark tool to assess the status of their innovation effectiveness. This research framework is useful for firms to classify, assess, and evaluate their innovation type. The study’s findings also suggest the road map for future strategic goals. This theoretical framework illustrates the causal relationship between Japanese-style digital innovation and the firms’ sustainable competitive advantage. This model might be extended to other firms in different contexts (e.g., Korea, India, USA, Brazil, and a host of other countries). The theoretical and practical implications are discussed for future research.

Abstract The paper discusses competitiveness of the agro-industrial sector, which is a multifaceted concept that characterizes its ability to compete in both domestic and foreign markets. Ukraine has significant opportunities to develop the agricultural sector and turn it into a highly efficient branch of economy. Favorable soil and climate conditions, and fertile land contribute to its further development, obtaining agricultural crops in volumes sufficient to meet domestic needs and build export potential. The production process of agricultural goods takes longer than in industry. Therefore, at the stage of determination of the production program of an agricultural enterprise, it is very difficult to respond on time to changes in consumer demand and increase the product competitiveness within the already established production schemes in the markets. Therefore, the purpose of our study is to evaluate the effectiveness of growing the studied crops in a typical farm in Central Ukraine and offer a roadmap for making management decisions when planning a production program. For this purpose, a method based on calculations of the gross margin, total expenses, production thresholds, profitability, and payback of production factors was chosen.

This paper evaluates the environmental behavior of smes in the Canary Islands (Spain), one of the Outermost European Regions. The islands’ fragile socioeconomic systems and scarce resources noticeably condition the competitiveness of their firms. An empirical analysis ranks environmental protection practices in smes and identifies differences on the basis of size and business sector. In addition, groups of firms with different environmental behavior are identified to facilitate the design of environmental policies, improve effectiveness in decision making and the more efficient use of resources. From a theoretical perspective, this paper contributes to the gap identified by the precursors of the Natural Resource-Based View of the firm by analyzing specific resource combinations that each firm can use to improve its environmental performance and achieve competitive advantages. The firms best positioned to develop the dynamic capabilities needed are identified not only considering the physical environment, but also the socio-economic one and key intangible resources are measured that shape firms’ environmental strategy.

Abstract:
Digital transformation has profoundly influenced various socio-economic fields and induced retailing firms to utilize digital innovations to maximize business effectiveness in the digital era. The study aims to pinpoint the motivations for online retailing (ORE) adoption and business performance among Vietnamese businesses in the formative digital transformation stage within an extended technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework. The questionnaire-based data are accumulated for this study. Firm respondents are those who have used and increased their familiarity with ORE in Vietnam. All analysis is performed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results posit that important factors of technological context (i.e., relative advantage, compatibility, and observability), organizational context (i.e., top management support, entrepreneurial orientation, and technological orientation), and the environmental context (i.e., perceived trend, government support, and legal framework) substantially boost ORE adoption. Additionally, firm age is an essential control variable that strongly influences firms’ engagement in ORE. Unexpectedly, firm size, competitive pressure, and control variable (i.e., number of employees) do not significantly affect ORE adoption. Besides, ORE adoption serves as an underlying motivation for business performance. Ultimately, theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract:
Transferring a quantity of credible knowledge is a key sustainable competitive advantage for multi-agent cooperation in an interorganizational network (ION). This study presents simulation research to identify the impacts of reputation mechanisms in interorganizational knowledge transfer through systematic evolutionary game theory, addressing the sustainability of knowledge transfer behaviors in innovation, R&D, and low green carbon. The simulation results showed that an agent’s reputation provides information about having valuable knowledge, which can reduce some of the opportunistic behaviors of knowledge transfer faced by knowledge agents. Regardless of its form, we found that reputation distribution significantly promotes interorganizational knowledge transfer behaviors. In addition, higher reputation thresholds and more significant differences in the impact of high and low reputations prominently contribute to knowledge transfer efficiency and effectiveness. The relationship between reputation mechanisms and the efficiency and effectiveness of knowledge transfer is examined. This study sheds light on the sustainable management of interorganizational projects from reputation mechanisms.

The dynamic capabilities, representing the organization’s competence to integrate, create and reconfigure internal and external competencies to ensure compliance with constantly changing environmental conditions, allow the organization to achieve a competitive advantage in the long term. The assumption of the background about the importance of dynamic capabilities for understanding the phenomenon of competition raises the question of the variables, affecting the effectiveness of the processes of formation of dynamic capabilities. The aim of this paper is discussion of the results of studies on the impact of resources on the effectiveness of the processes of formation of dynamic capabilities of Polish enterprises. The nature and essence of dynamic abilities of enterprises have been characterized in the article, the value of resources in the processes of formation of dynamic abilities of Polish enterprises has been noted, which subsequently allowed to formulate conclusions about the relationship between resources and efficiency of processes of formation of dynamic abilities of Polish enterprises have been formulated. The results of the research resources in the processes of formation of dynamic capabilities of Polish enterprises, presented in the paper, are fragment of the research project, whose goal is to develop a paradigm concept of dynamic capabilities from the perspective of strategic management, identification and analysis of dynamic capabilities of Polish enterprises.According to respondents in the process of questioning, sources of efficiency should be sought in external variables (customer loyalty, market share, sales growth), but not in internal variables (employment growth). Such a state, indicating the orientation of the organization outward, should be considered correct from the point of view of the logic of the dominant ways of constructing a strategy, since it indicates an understanding of the needs of the environment, while dynamically comparing with the expectations of this environment and the resources available to the organization.

Abstract:
Problem definition: This paper studies two cooperative approaches of firms in managing social responsibility violations of their supplier: auditing a common supplier jointly (joint auditing) and sharing independent audit results with other firms (audit sharing). We study this problem in a market with externalities and a large number of firms. Academic/practical relevance: With numerous firms procuring their materials and parts worldwide, there are many cases in which overseas suppliers violate safety, labor, or environmental standards. Those violations have externalities in the sense that one firm’s violation affects other firms in the same market. It is not clear how such externalities affect competing firms’ incentives to cooperate and the effectiveness of such cooperation. Methodology: We develop a model based on a cooperative game in partition function form, which enables us to analyze the competitive and cooperative interactions of a large number of firms in a market. Results: Although there has been concern about cooperation for fear of compromising a competitive advantage, firms have incentives to cooperate in managing their suppliers when one firm can be hurt by others’ violations, that is, the negative externality is high. However, neither cooperative approach necessarily improves social responsibility, especially when one firm can benefit from others’ violations, that is, the positive externality is high. Finally, even if agreement is not reached for cooperation before conducting individual audits, social responsibility can still be improved by incentivizing firms to share their private audit results with others under a properly designed mechanism. Managerial implications: The careful assessment of the externalities associated with social responsibility violations is a key to the success of joint auditing and audit sharing. Although firms cooperate voluntarily in some cases, a government agency or an industry association should intervene in other cases to motivate cooperation if it is beneficial. In addition, caution must be taken to monitor manufacturers’ audit efforts, especially when cooperative approaches are implemented in the market where competition is fierce and consumers switch brands easily.

Abstract:
Investment policy has always played one of the most important roles in the development of the national economy. Foreign direct investment is interconnected with the activities of multinational companies and the opportunities that can be obtained by the host country. The article reveals the investment policy of Zambia and the role played by the public sector in it. The identified competitive advantages prove that Zambia has significant investment potential even though the country does not have direct access to the sea. Significant reserves of mineral raw materials confirm the energy and resource security of the economy, which is the area for investment by both national and foreign companies. The authors pay attention to several important problems of socio-economic significance, which complicate the effective and full functioning of the economy. The authors found that there are not enough studies in the domestic and foreign literature on the investment potential of Zambia. The study of inward investment activity showed that free economic zones are the most effective tool for attracting FDI, while the extractive sector remains the most attractive in this area. A comparative analysis of the disadvantages and advantages of the Zambian economy, conducted by the authors, proves that the state has the necessary elements of investment attractiveness. However, it was noted that the arrival of investments in the country should also meet the socio-economic interests of the state.

Abstract:
As countries interact more and more, technology gains a decisive role in facilitating today’s increased need for interconnection. At the same time, systems, becoming more advanced as technology progresses, feed each other and can produce highly complex and unpredictable results. However, with this ever-increasing need for interconnected operations, complex problems arise that need to be effectively tackled. This need extends far beyond the scientific and mechanical fields, covering every aspect of life. Systemic Thinking Philosophy and the System Dynamics methodology now seem to be more relevant than ever and their practical implementation in real-life industrial cases has started to become a trend. Companies that decide to implement such approaches can achieve significant improvements to the effectiveness of their operations and gain a competitive advantage. This research, influenced by the Systemic Thinking Philosophy, applies a System Dynamics approach in practice by improving the quality control process of a pharmaceutical company. The process is modeled, simulated, analyzed, and improvements are performed to achieve more effective and efficient operations. The results show that all these steps led to a successful identification and optimization of the critical factors, and a significant process improvement was achieved.

Abstract:
- The problem of the influence exerted on the firms behaviour from the introduction of the mechanisms of regulation of the Emissions Trading (ET) - is the heart of this 185 work. In fact, following the approach of the new-institutionalist school of Powell and Di Maggio, we wanted to test how much the business can be influenced by both the action of public and private institutions and the interaction with the socio-economical environment where it acts. In this context we tried to analyse the consequences induced by the dictates of the Kyoto Protocol on the strategic choices of the companies, with reference, above all, to the tendencies to change and innovation. The hypothesis of search is that mechanisms of regulation of the ET may change the competitive behaviour of the companies, for the advantage to pay the emissions permits rather than innovate the technological processes. To sustain such an hypothesis we developed a Decision Support System able to simulate the businesses behaviour after the share allotment. The work ends with a simulation carried out on the energy manufacturing equipment from which it is possible to make some considerations about the limited effectiveness of the mechanisms of regulation of the ET to stimulate virtuous businesses behaviours oriented to innovation.Key words: new-institutional theory, emission trading, competitive behaviour.JEL classifications: M51, L51, C15, Q56

Abstract:
In the TV and radio industry, the efficiency of the hardware and software of broadcast production complexes is the basis of competitive advantage, and therefore, in the context of global digitalization, television industry companies face the task of constantly improving broadcast production complexes. Such improvement is largely provided by new technologies, some of which are aimed at automating broadcasting processes. In the article, the author analyzes the existing problems of automation of broadcast production complexes and concludes that such problems are caused by the desire of TV and radio companies to replace the traditional approach to the production of programs using a team of specialists with software. However, the effectiveness of this approach is questionable, especially if the release of the program is associated with live work, where in an uncertain situation it is not possible to react promptly to any events using automated software. Hence, automation of production processes in the field of broadcasting becomes an effective and economical technology only with the correct configuration of the software and careful calculation of automation prospects. The real prospects for automation of broadcast production complexes are currently in almost unexplored areas for the television sphere - the areas of voice control, which is based on artificial intelligence based on various algorithms for training artificial neural networks, which requires additional study and development of an appropriate model adapted to a specific task.
