Abstract:
Environmental education is seen as a key driver of small business environmental management, yet little is known about the activities small business owner-managers are undertaking to reduce their environmental impact or in what areas they may need education. Therefore, research that can identify environmental management activities being undertaken in small businesses may provide potential targets for education. As intention to behave in a particular way is often predicated on some sort of planning, extending the research questions to ascertain if planning is occurring and its impact on environmental behaviour in small businesses is also seen as critical. The results revealed that, overall, the level of environmental activity in small business was low and that less than a quarter had an environmental plan. In addition, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and purchasing green energy are not areas of engagement for most small businesses and are recommended as potential targets for education.

Abstract:
AbstractThe importance of the environment is something of a cracked record to many small business owners, as historically any calls to business to change or improve their practices or behaviours were from the ‘environmental’ or ‘green’ perspective, rather than from a business perspective. As a consequence, many small businesses have simply tuned out. This research sought to identify the impact of an education intervention program that encouraged better environmental management practices and provided practical assistance to the businesses. The research was designed to test the effectiveness of the program and record any changes that occurred in the businesses over the duration of the project. To measure changes, it included a pre- and post-intervention survey. Overall, there was an increased awareness in most of the businesses in regard to environmental issues. Participants from many of the businesses also expressed positive changes to both behaviours and attitudes to environmental issues. This demonstrated the value of the program, and also highlighted the challenge to engage small business, even when a business case is apparent, given the cost of implementing this type of intensive and personalised assistance.

Abstract:
This paper explores some interconnections between the business and environmental ethics movements. The first section argues that business has obligations to protect the environment over and above what is required by environmental law and that it should cooperate and interact with government in establishing environmental regulation. Business must develop and demonstrate environmental moral leadership. The second section exposes the danger of using the rationale of “good ethics is good business” as a basis for such business moral leadership in both the business and environmental ethics movements. The third section cautions against the moral shallowness inherent in the position or in the promotional strategy of ecological homocentrism which claims that society, including business, ought to protect the environment solely because of harm done to human beings and human interests. This paper urges business and environmental ethicists to promote broader and deeper moral perspectives than ones based on mere self-interest or human interest. Otherwise both movements will come up ethically short.

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to understand whether family businesses and non-family business differ from one another regarding green business and environmental issues. Green business issues are of global importance for the continued existence of business within the world. Businesses do not exist in isolation but within the context of the environment within which they function. Business has an impact on the environment and the environment has an impact on business. Furthermore, family businesses constitute a large part of the world economy and estimates range from 60-90 percent of GDP contributed by family businesses. In the South African context family businesses also form a significant part of the business environment. A literature study was conducted. The study identified five factors and considered each of these factors in the study. The five factors are: Green Business; Values; Stewardship; Succession; and, Stakeholders. In addition to a literature, primary research was conducted and data were collected by means of a questionnaire that collected data on the factors identified as well as some biographical information, including race, age and the sectors in which the respondents operated. The study’s findings correspond with the literature study, although no clear difference was found between family business and non-family business relating to green business and environmental issues. Family businesses do however believe that they are stewards of the environment and need to care for the environment.

Knowles, Kathryn. "A holistic framework for environmental change: socio-environmental cohesion for sustainability." Thesis, University of Hull, 2010. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:4918.

Full text
Abstract:
Research purpose: Environmental issues have become a regular debate within social, business and political arenas. The need to combine social, environmental and economic systems to achieve a sustainable future (Triple Bottom Line), is gaining prominence within many international development projects. The study of traditional business Environmental Management Systems (EMS) leads to the observation that such systems place primary emphasis upon economic and environmental factors. The project begins with the proposal that an EMS built by an organisations employees' has a greater potential to identify practical environmental impacts and reduce social resistance to change. Methods: This thesis details the development of a seven-stage framework for environmental change referred to as Socio-Environmental Cohesion for Sustainability (SECS). The framework is trialled within a case study organisation (OrgX) using an interpretivist philosophy of social constructionism to guide the research. An action research project is conducted with the researcher acting as an observing participant of the change process. The developed framework follows a multimethodology design of organisational engagement, with strong emphasis placed upon the social values that can drive environmental management practices. The combination of cybernetic and social tools of organisational analysis is shown to provide a unique approach to environmental strategy design; Viable Systems Model, Team Syntegrity, Cultural Analysis, Social Network Analysis. Results: The Cultural and Social Network Analyses provide evidence of an informal environmental network (EWG) contained within OrgX, and identify the core social environmental values of the employee group. A Team Syntegrity workshop is performed and develops a bottom-up participatory approach to environmental strategy designs between the EWG and business management. Following the workshop, OrgX is shown to implement 56% of the developed environmental strategy within eight months. The Viable Systems Model is used to diagnose the organisations structure, which is then combined with the Social Network Analysis to establish the outreach of the EWG.Conclusions: The recognition of the informal environmental network as an official management committee, improvements to operational efficiency and practical benefits to onsite biodiversity, indicates that the SECS framework is capable of addressing all aspects of the Triple Bottom Line.

Ramsay, Sylvia L. "Hybrid Business Organisations' Lessons for Environmental Social Work." Thesis, Griffith University, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/404167.

Full text
Abstract:
This research project aimed to find ways to increase the capacity of social workers to improve environmental wellbeing by examining hybrid organisations. It is important that social workers act to increase environmental wellbeing because environmental systems are being placed under severe pressure from pollution, accelerated loss of biodiversity, soil loss and climate change (Dylan, 2012; Gray et al., 2017; IUCN, 2015; Steffen et al., 2015; Zapf, 2010). From perspectives that recognise the innate value of the natural world this damage is immoral but even from an anthropocentric perspective the damage to the environment is exacerbating environmental injustice and reducing the ability of humans to survive (Boetto, 2019; Jones, 2011; McKinnon & Bay, 2013). This research project used a multi-case study method framed through the ontological and epistemological lens of critical realism (Bergene, 2007; Bhaskar, 2016; Easton, 2010; O’Gorman & MacIntosh, 2015; Vincent & O'Mahoney, 2018). Based on the theory of social learning (Lysack, 2009; McLeod, 2013; Sundel & Sundel, 2005) it was expected that people would learn how to act in more environmentally beneficial ways through interaction with other people. Initially the theory of social learning did appear as the mechanism to cause change, however as more detailed analysis was undertaken, it was found that social learning was not the only mechanism. The term hybrid organisation has no strict definition and is applied broadly (Barraket et al., 2010; Raynolds et al., 2014; Sabeti, 2011) but for the purposes of this project, hybrid organisations are defined as non-government organisations seeking to achieve environmental and social benefits rather than maximising financial profit. The three hybrid businesses examined for this project; Food Connect – linking urban consumers with local sustainable farmers, Substation 33 – recycling e-waste and Running Wild – assisting long term unemployed, were able to achieve both environmental and social benefits. The study was successful in identifying activities hybrid organisations undertake to improve the wellbeing of the environment and identifying how these activities improve environmental outcomes. Factors that supported environmental wellbeing assisted participants to act in environmentally beneficial ways and by involving people in environmentally beneficial activities participants demonstrated changes in their beliefs and practices. As well as these enabling factors, many barriers to participation in environmentally beneficial activities were also identified. The findings were then assessed from a social work perspective and possible applications for social work were identified. Social workers could seek to add the successful practices demonstrated by hybrid organisations to social work to increase the environmentally beneficial outcomes of social work practice. It also appears that the skills and knowledge of social workers could be helpful in overcoming barriers to increasing environmental wellbeing. The compatibility of the hybrid model with social work appears strong, as tasks considered important in defining social work were being undertaken in hybrid businesses. Being able to realise social benefits while achieving environmental benefits, strengthens the case for adding the environmentally beneficial activities to social work practice. In addition, people with training in the profession of social work could make a useful contribution to any organisation seeking to implement a hybrid business model.

Hyde, Neville. "Environmental scanning : the need for and overview of environmental scanning system." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/4595.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Historically organisations have had the "luxury" of being able to anticipate future developments and respond to them in good time due to, firstly, the comparatively slow pace of change and, secondly, the past being a relatively good predictor of the future. The second half of the 20th Century bears witness to some of the most dramatic changes and developments experienced by mankind. Most notable of these were globalisation, de-regulation, the emergence of the information/knowledge economy and, perhaps most significant of all, the changes brought about by the Internet. The underlying assertion of this report is that, given the current, complex, dynamic and sometimes volatile nature of changes in the external environment, in order to ensure a sustainable competitive advantage, organisations will be forced to consider carefully the dynamics of the environment in which they operate and to build their plans around these dynamics. This report briefly traces the evolution of strategic planning to its current status prior to providing a detailed analysis of the nature of environmental scanning and its applicability to strategic planning. The report provides a theoretical rerview of environmental scanning and a discussion of some of the tools and techniques of environmental scanning. Within this context the report provides a brief indication of the extent of the practice of environmental scanning within the financial services sector of South Africa. The conclusion assesses the findings of the current state of the practice of environmental scanning against the theory, with the view to providing an insight into the extent to which environmental scanning is applied in South Africa. Possible future directions of research and development of the practice are also identified.

Abstract:
While the issue of environmental protection and sustainable development has been richly explored in theory, the practical implementation of the rules and principal into social life and enterprise practice has remained neglected. The paper focuses on environmental education, whose aim is the changeover in thinking and attitudes of the present-day economically active population and that of the young generation. Environmental education is to be understood from the conceptual aspect as an organic part of the entire complex of education and training, not excluding further professional education. Environmental education is not the most recent issue: formal education has been dealing with the nature protection and care for the environment since the 1970-ies. Environmental education is promoted in all types of schools, either in direct in-class instruction or indirectly through special interest (hobby) education. It is essential to pass from the theoretical analysis and discussions about environmental problems to their utilisation in practice. An important role in this process is played by managers. The focus of our empirical research is on attitudes, opinions and environmental thinking of line managers. The paper is a partial outcome from the nation-wide research project scheme VEGA, No. 1/0328/21: ‟Post-pandemic Business Management: identification of temporary and sustainable changes in sequential and parallel management functions in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic”.

Abstract:
Environmental awareness has increased as a result of disruption of the ecological balance. As consumers' concerns about the natural environment have been increasing with each passing day, consumers act environmentally-friendly in developed societies. In fact, environmental awareness is not only for consumers, but also it is important for companies. Because the companies are required to meet consumers' needs and expectations. Many companies are implementing environmental awareness within the framework of green marketing practices. They also try to be superior to their competitors. In today's world, companies must be sensitive to the ecological environment in order to be able to survive and compete.

Banerjee, Onil, Juan M. Murguia, Martin Cicowiez, and Adela Moreda. The Integrated Economic-Environmental Modeling (IEEM) Platform Approach to Tourism Investment Analysis: An Application to Costa Rica. Inter-American Development Bank, March 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0002288.

Full text
Abstract:
Public investment in different types of tourism, from business to leisure tourism, has differentiated impacts on local economies, environment, people and government revenues. A fully integrated analytical approach such as the Integrated Economic-Environmental Modeling (IEEM) Platform is required to capture these multi-dimensional impacts. Applying IEEM to public investment in tourism in Costa Rica we find: investing in a higher skilled labor force particularly in traditional tourism-related activities will improve household welfare; similar increases in demand across all types of tourism show that Health tourism generates the greatest impact on household welfare, while Business tourism has the best prospects for reducing unemployment; Business tourism generates the largest increase in government revenues, but also has the largest greenhouse gas emission footprint, and; the whole of economy perspective of IEEM that captures direct, indirect and induced impacts results in a higher Net Present Value estimation of the investment.

Hirami, Naotaka. Working Paper PUEAA No. 2. Green Policy driven activities at Hiroshima University. Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Programa Universitario de Estudios sobre Asia y África, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.22201/pueaa.002r.2021.

Full text
Abstract:
The University of Hiroshima has decided to focus on how the organization of human societies and the problems generated by these, have impacted the environment, as well as the influence that these should have as factors in the so-called "green policies" in order to create sustainable development. It is through education, mainly in universities, that we seek to create not only awareness but also a research base on which to work and create support and working networks towards the labor and business sectors with an emphasis on environmental care. By creating an intersectional model, the necessary measures for environmental protection can be better understood and applied without neglecting human and economic development, which are equally important for the progress of societies. The activities presented by the University, and that seek to expand to Mexico, are a great opportunity to create such networks in the country and understand the development-environment interrelationship.

Abstract:
The 2021 Small Business Credit Survey (SBCS) found that 1 in 10 small employer businesses suffered losses from a natural disaster during the prior 12 months. According to the National Centers for Environmental Information, the United States experienced 20 billion-dollar natural disasters in 2021, making it one of the costliest years in recent history. Major events included Hurricane Ida, the historic cold wave in Texas and other southern states, and the destructive wildfire season in the West. To more deeply explore the impact of these and other natural disasters on small businesses, the SBCS includes a module of natural disaster-related questions for affected firms. This fact sheet outlines some of the major findings from the 2021 SBCS for employer firms with respect to natural disaster impact.
