Abstract:
Within the school environment, teachers are well placed to identify children who exhibit ADHD symptoms. Universal school-based screening for ADHD is, however, not recommended. Teachers’ ratings of children’s behaviour at age 5 have been found to predict later academic outcomes. Longitudinal research suggests that inattention is substantively and significantly associated with poor academic outcomes whereas hyperactivity is not significantly related to later academic attainment, and impulsivity might be advantageous. Symptoms of inattention remain largely stable over time but symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity change. Whilst the school environment can present significant challenges for children with ADHD, advice and guidance to teachers about how to help children with inattentive, hyperactive, and impulsive behaviour to succeed in the classroom can facilitate more positive behavioural and academic outcomes. There is a need for research that assesses long-term outcomes and cost-effectiveness of school-based interventions as well as the impact of transition into secondary schooling.

Abstract:
The tools of genetic epidemiology—family, adoption, and twin studies—show convincingly that substance use behavior and substance use disorders are influenced by both genetic and familial and extrafamilial environmental factors. Environmental factors appear to play a more influential role in the early stages of substance use, whereas genetic factors become more important in the development of problem use and substance use disorder. Moreover, some genetic effects are likely conditional on conducive environments; research employing both behavior genetic approaches and measured genes point to important gene–environment interactions that promote substance use and dependence. Consequently, a full understanding of the addiction process requires investigating substance use behavior within its comorbid context. The identification of specific genetic mechanisms underlying these heritable influences is elusive. These findings have prompted the development of new strategies for testing the joint effect of multiple genetic variants in gene-based or gene pathway analyses.

Abstract:
There is a great deal of interest in examining the genetic and environmental architecture to aggression, violence, and antisocial behaviors. This interest has resulted in hundreds of studies being published that estimate genetic and environmental effects on antisocial phenotypes. The results generated from these studies have been remarkably consistent and have contributed greatly to the knowledge base on the etiology of antisocial behavior. This chapter reviews the research on the genetic basis to antisocial phenotypes by presenting the results related to the heritability of antisocial phenotypes. It also discusses some of the molecular genetic association studies as well as genome-wide association studies that focus on the development of antisocial behaviors. In doing so, it also reviews findings related to gene–environment interactions. The chapter concludes by discussing some of the ways in which these findings could be used for intervention and prevention programs.

Abstract:
This chapter primarily discusses experiments and quasi-experiments (also known as natural experiments) as designs for examining the causal effect of neighborhood environments on health. The first half of this chapter discusses causal inference, and experimental, quasi-experimental, and longitudinal study designs. These designs are important for causal inference, by providing a clear temporal ordering and the ability to take into account (potential) time lags between exposure to neighborhood environment characteristics and changes in health and health behavior. The second half of the chapter discusses examples in the literature of studies using experimental, quasi-experimental, and longitudinal designs to examine the relationships between neighborhood environments and health. We provide an in-depth empirical look at a large and well-known experiment examining how neighborhoods influence health: the Moving to Opportunity housing policy experiment.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter Neurocognitive Development During Adolescence describes the interplay of biological, psychological, and environmental influences on adolescent development. It provides an overview of how recent neurocognitive research can further our understanding of both adaptive and maladaptive adolescent behaviors and the development of their underlying neurocognitive processes. First, recent findings regarding brain maturation during adolescence are outlined; an introduction to the techniques used to study this is provided. Then brain–behavior relationships are discussed that elucidate how cognitive control and socioemotional processing develop during adolescence. Finally, work examining how individual differences in neurocognitive development can occur due to external influences such as peers, parents, and the sociocultural environment adolescents where grow up is reviewed.
