Full textProtectors of cleanliness in permanent contact with dirt, the washermen were in a somewhat ambiguous position in the Ancient Egyptians' minds: undesirable, according to the Satire of the Trades, but delightful according to love songs. This study aims at defining these professionals as precisely as possible through various approaches. Firstly, an investigation of Egyptian vocabulary, from the earliest attestations of the Old Kingdom to the more recent examples of the Ptolemaic Period, in hieroglyphic, hieratic and demotic, highlights the evolution of the main term used to designate these workers, the title of rekhty (rḫty). From a complex ideogram depicting a man washing a cloth, to two birds, gradually reduced to their head until they resemble no more than two horns, the writing of this noun allows us to follow the gradual simplification and rapidity of the scribes' gestures. Following the study of the vocabulary and a presentation of the spatial and temporal distribution of the occurrences preserved, the research continues with a second chapter aiming at determining as concretely as possible the various tasks these professionals were responsible for, through a presentation of the “chaîne opératoire” of laundry care. Using iconographic sources, each of the stages, from the delivery of the linen to its return, is discussed. While washing, wringing out and drying are easy to understand, several complementary actions are more difficult to grasp and subject to different interpretations maybe linked with dyeing practice. Another chapter completes this overview by looking at the material resources available to the launderers to carry out their operations: textiles, tools and products. The discussion then expands, leaving the field of washing to put these workers into more perspective by considering them in the broader frame of ancient Egypt. Various topics are then addressed, including the administrative frameworks in which these workers were employed, hierarchical considerations, team organization, gender issue, difficulties related to the temporality of linen care, and question of the remuneration and costs of this profession. The work ends with a discussion about dirtiness and cleanliness of textiles. The launderers thus stop at the gates of the temenos, before the linen is handed over to the priests and enters a world in which it transcends its own materiality to become one of the instruments used to establish ritual purity

Full textThis qualitative study aims to extend the knowledge about social work in third line (i.e., hospital-based and specialized) psychiatric services. The outlook of social workers is central in our study as we asked these professionals about the meaning of their duties at work. Interviews were conducted with mental health social workers from the Mental Health Institute of Quebec City. From April to June 2015, 10 social workers were interviewed. They answered a semi-structured questionnaire divided in two sections: (1) social work practice in third line psychiatry; and (2) a practice narrative centered on an actual clinical example. Thematic content analysis based on a codification table with predetermined and emerging categories was conducted. Results and discussion: The central theme of our analysis pertains to the notion of linking, which is viewed as central to social work practices: ties created, preserved, or re-established by social workers, and involving users, families, other practitioners, and other various partners. Social workers enact various roles in third line psychiatric settings. Significantly, the way their role is understood in interdisciplinary teams influences the continuity of the collaboration itself, as well as the achievement of the goals established with clients. The case-centered practice narratives underline that clinical management in third line psychiatric settings need interventions from different collaborators and demand the use of new intervention approaches. Constructive and effective collaborations along with the addition of families in complex interventions provide great support in the realization of the users’ intervention plan or discharge plan. For social workers, the diverse forms of clinical supports, training accessibility and work flexibility facilitate their tasks. Keywords: social work, hospital practice, mental health, psychiatry.

Full textDependability assessment, by system manufacturer, during aircraft design, based on stochastic modeling, is of common practice, but model based operational dependability assessment online, during missions' achievement, is seldom done. Usually, the stochastic assessment addresses aircraft safety. This thesis addresses aircraft operational dependability modeling to support mission and maintenance planning, as well as the achievement of the missions. We develop a modeling approach, based on a meta-model that is used as a basis i) to structure the information needed to assess aircraft operational reliability and ii) to build a stochastic model that can be updated dynamically. The update concerns the current state of the aircraft system, a mission profile and the maintenance facilities available at the flight stop locations involved in the mission. The aim is to enable operational reliability assessment online. Two case studies, based on aircraft subsystems, are considered for illustration. We present examples of evaluation results that show the valuable role of operational dependability assessment during aircraft mission

Full textVarious techniques can be used in rotating machines condition based maintenance. Among which vibration analysis remains the most popular and most effective tool for monitoring the internal state of an operating machine. Through vibration analysis, the state of each component constituting the machine can be characterized by one or more fault indicators. Monitoring these indicators can be used to detect the presence of a defect or even locate it. However, the evolution of these indicators can be influenced by other parameters than defect such as the variation of load, speed or replacement of a component. So counting solely on the evolution of these fault indicators to diagnose a machine can cause false alarms and question the reliability of the diagnosis. In this thesis, we combined vibration analysis tools with pattern recognition method to firstly improve fault detection reliability of components such as bearings, secondly to assess the severity of degradation by closely monitor the defect growth and finally to estimate their remaining useful life. For these reasons, we have designed a pattern recognition process capable of; identifying defect even in machines running under non stationary conditions, processing evolving data of an evolving system and can handle an online learning. This process will have to decide the internal state of the machine using only faults indicators or linear combinations of fault indicators. The process of pattern recognition of dynamic forms consists of extracting and selecting useful information, classify these observations continuously into their right classes then decide on an action according to the observations' class.Three dynamic classification methods have been developed during this thesis: Dynamic DBSCAN that was developed to capitalize on the time evolution of the data and their classes, Evolving Scalable DBSCAN (ESDBSCAN) that was created to overcome the shortcoming of DDBSCAN in online processing and finally Dynamic Fuzzy Scalable DBSCAN (DFSDBSCAN); a dynamic fuzzy and semi-supervised version of ESDBSCAN. These methods can detect the observations evolution and identify the nature of the change causing it; either if it's a change in operating mode of the machine (speed variation or load) or a change related to the defect. With these techniques we were are able to enhance the reliability of fault detection by identifying the origin of the fault indicators evolution. An evolution caused by an alteration of the operating mode and changes caused by defect result in two different types of classes evolution (the appearance of a new class we named it 'defected' in case of defect or a drift otherwise). Not only that but these techniques helped us enhance the precocity of the fault detection and estimate the remaining useful life of the monitored component as well by analyzing the distance separating the class 'healthy' and 'defected'.The application of the designed process on real data helped us prove the legitimacy of the proposed techniques in identifying the different states of bearings over time (healthy or normal, defective) and the origin of the observations' evolution with a low error rate, a reliable diagnosis and a low memory occupation. Keywords: Diagnosis and monitoring, bearings, pattern recognition, learning, dynamic classification, Vibration Analysis, DFSDBSCAN, ESDBSCAN, DDBSCAN

Full textNursing interventions that target motivation to adopt healthy behaviors, such as brief motivational interviewing (MI), can help reduce cardiovascular risk factors. While face-to-face MI training lacks accessibility, e-learning use for MI training is promising because of the flexibility it offers. The objective was to assess the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary effect of a web-based e-learning platform for brief MI (MOTIV@CŒUR) on cardiovascular nurses’ clinical use and perceived skill in brief MI. A single group pre-post pilot study was conducted to evaluate MOTIV@CŒUR with nurses working in a coronary care unit. The web-based e-learning platform consists of two sessions with a total duration of 50 minutes based on videos of nurse-patient interactions. In each session, a theoretical introduction of brief MI is followed by role playing based on real life clinical situations in which a nurse practitioner evaluates patients’ motivation to change, and intervenes according to the principles of brief MI. The clinical situations target smoking, medication adherence, physical activity and diet. Nurses were asked to complete both training sessions online within 20 days. Data on feasibility, acceptability and preliminary effects (perceived skills in brief MI and self-reported clinical use of conviction and confidence interventions) were collected at 30 days (± 5 days) following the first session. We enrolled 27 women and 4 men (mean age 37 ± 9) in March 2016. Twenty-four out of 31 participants (77%) completed both sessions in less than 20 days, and at one month, 28 had completed at least one session. The training was found highly acceptable, with information quality, perceived ease of use, and system quality scoring the highest. The score of self-reported clinical use of confidence interventions was higher after the two sessions than before the sessions (P = .032). While all scores increased from baseline, other results were not statistically significant. In conclusion, the implementation of a web-based e-learning platform for brief MI is both feasible and acceptable among cardiovascular care nurses. Moreover, it can have a positive effect on self-reported clinical use of confidence interventions towards health behaviour change.
