Zhang, Xiaoyan. "Cross-industry digital innovation in asset maintenance : a phenomenon-based exploratory case study." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Ecully, Ecole centrale de Lyon, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023ECDL0051.
Full textA phenomenon-based exploratory case study Abstract This thesis captures, describes, documents, and conceptualize an unexplored yet significant phenomenon, cross-industry digital innovation, by cross-fertilizing the asset maintenance in aviation and rail freight industries. Rail is the most energy-efficient and low-emitting freight transport mode. However, the status quo of rail freight wagon maintenance in Europe presents a state of inefficiency and lack of intelligence. With the rapid development of digital technologies, condition-based and predictive maintenance represent an excellent opportunity to yield a big efficiency leap in wagon maintenance, thus potentially making rail freight transport competitive and sustainable. This thesis argues that how to leverage digital technologies to benefit rail freight wagon maintenance is not only a technical problem of how to make good use of digital technology to improve maintenance efficiency, but also a strategic problem of how to innovate business model to generate value growth for rail freight industry. When solving such complex practical problems, sometimes the best ideas come from outside your industry. As initiated by the Aero-Ferro Benchmark project, learning the best practice from aviation will contribute to rail freight success. Thus, this thesis aims to theoretically conceptualize how to carry out cross-industry digital innovation in asset maintenance, and to practically solve the problem of what rail freight can learn from the aviation industry. In this respect, this thesis reviews relevant theories in the field of innovation and strategy aiming to find theoretical support. However, based on the knowledge gaining from literature, it is found that cross-industry digital innovation is such an infant field that no well-established and well-fitting theory could directly help define, analyze and address this complex issue. This motivates us to conceptualize a new theoretical framework to explain this emerging phenomenon. To achieve this purpose, this thesis conducts an exploratory case study on digital innovation in asset maintenance in aviation and rail freight industries. We start from determining a preliminary asset maintenance system framework from two sub-system (technical system and business system) to guide the phenomenon-based theorizing. Then, an abductive reasoning and system combing approach is followed, together with literature review and case study as the main research methods. Findings from case study on the technical system argue that the maintenance strategy of rail freight wagons will undergo an imperative paradigm shift from preventive to predictive, especially in terms of utilizing digital technology and data management. Thus, a technical architecture of condition monitoring based predictive maintenance for rail freight wagons is proposed in this thesis. For the business system, this thesis analyzes the changing roles of main actors in this emerging digital maintenance landscape and the evolution of their business models in wagon maintenance ecosystem, forecasting the potential business model innovation of rolling stock(wagon) OEMs, cargo rail operators and wagon keepers. In doing so, this thesis offers insightful theoretical and practical contributions. First, this thesis contributes to advancing the theory building in cross-industry digital innovation. A phenomenon-based cross-industry digital innovation strategy framework is developed. Second, this thesis contributes to guiding the problem-solving strategy of digital innovation in wagon maintenance in rail freight industry

Full textThis thesis relates to the assessment of the efficiency of preventive maintenance (PM) and of the corrective maintenance (CM) over the electrical network’s equipments. This assessment has to allow the consideration of the prior knowledge of experts on the behaviour of certain devices. The prior opinion is here necessary because of the considered framework which involves reliable equipments and thus few data of breakdowns to be run for the inference. We propose in this thesis a new approach for inferring the efficiency of CM with addition of prior information (named Méthode A). It leans on several results of recent works led in the field of arithmetic reduction of the age models (ARA). This method has to allow the use of prior data in the proposed model, and avoid some limitations inherent to the classical Bayesian approach. Although the tests of Méthode A present good properties of estimation, we notice that its generalization in the observation of a process of minimal CM and imperfect PM (ARA1) was not immediate during the led tests. We also present in these works a method, named Méthode B, used for the inference of parameters of the proposed model in the case of minimal CM and imperfect PM (ARA1)

Full textThe thesis aims at exploring the possible development of experience by means of language. Professional integration and training situations are linked to the efficiency of what is experienced. As regards the significance of language, it must be considered as the intelligibility of the relationship with the surround. The qualitative study, carried out during 3 interviews with a young lady for 5 years, aims at focusing on the intellibility of the surround. The different language theories are at the disposal of a dialogical understanding of discursive situations. The experience development can be explained thanks to an inside process and the relationship, between what has been lived and what is experienced, between sedimentation and decantation of what has been lived. Then, one can create a never achieved belonging background, which is still under process. And finally it enacts a poetizing background. The continuity between these backgrounds enables an ability to emerge. This one consists in experiencing a receptiveness of mind posture during training

Full textCells maintain their morphology and produce forces thanks to the cytoskeleton, which is composed of three types of protein polymers, amongst which the actin microfilaments. Actin filaments assemble into diverse architectures, which assembly and disassembly is tightly controlled in space and time. Indeed, the progressive hydrolysis of ATP in the monomers causes the actin filaments to age. Thus, actin needs to be recycled. When assembly and disassembly compensate, different actin architectures are in a dynamic steady state, in which the pool of actin monomers is renewed. Disassembly of actin structures also maintains a large reservoir of polymerization-ready monomers ready to assemble when needed by the cell. The lamellipodium is the locomotory organelle of the cell, and is made of a thin yet very dense sheet of dendritic actin network, with regulatory proteins. A pivotal protein is ADF/Cofilin, which is responsible of the disassembly of old actin filaments by fragmentation and debranching. To date, there have been extensive studies about the microscopic mechanisms, but if one wants to understand cell motility, one must decipher the collective and macroscopic disassembly of the dendritic actin network.By combining motility media reconstituted from purified proteins, and a new surface micro-patterning technique, I was able to reconstitute lamellipodium-like dendritic networks in vitro. During this thesis I explored the parameters that control the macroscopic disassembly of these networks. This work shows that the disassembly of dendritic actin networks depends on their architecture (density) and geometry (size): dense or extended networks are less efficiently disassembled and remain cohesive longer. Simulations show that these effects can be explains by a local depletion of ADF/Cofilin in the volume surrounding the network. Besides, networks of heterogeneous densities acquire directionality. This steering is modulated by selective disassembly of the networks by ADF/Cofilin. In parallel, these studies established a ratio at which networks are at a dynamic steady state. This work goes further than the fundamentally important studies about fragmentation of individual actin filaments, and establishes new parameters that control the disassembly of dendritic actin at the macroscopic scale

Full textDespite some efforts deployed by the government, the management of the CENAREST and the sector of scientific research in Gabon do not seem to meet expectations of the government actors and Gabonese citizens. Even if authorities often intervened, that emphasis was put on scientific research and that it is known to be a great lever for the country development, it does not seem to be accompanied by incentives acts and measures promoting a reassuring and efficient management of the public sector and research activities. The purpose of this doctoral research is to produce an explanatory model for understanding public action and resistance toward change shown by the institutional and governmental authorities, despite the malfunctions that were observed by international partners as well as the Gabon party. This research has allowed to show – with a framework inspired by Muller – values, images, standards and algorithms present within 16 stories narrating the practices of actors evolving in the CENAREST and the research sector in Gabon. This qualitative research is in the field of cognitive analysis of public policies, sometimes called political sociology of public action. In addition to the analysis of sectoral policies by Muller and the literature review, it benefits from the crossing of the biographical approach elaborated by Bertaux. The cognitive analysis of the data also shows, on one hand, how this work has contributed to the understanding of role, position and execution contexts as well as mechanisms of scientific and technological research in Gabon and the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC). On the other hand, it is fair to admit that Gabon is not a modern or complex society yet (Muller, 1985, 2005). Research shows perfectly that the absence, of both overall process of segmentation and the sectoral policy of scientific and technological research, depends on stammering and embryonic character of Gabonese society. The deficit observed in those areas, which are fairly well articulated and dynamic, explains the lack of mediators of social change in Gabon. Full textIn team sports, offensive transition situation is defined as the switch from defensive to offensive status as a consequence of a beneficial turn-over in the ball possession. For soccer coaches, this situation is considered to give rise to opportunities to score a goal. The whole aim of this work is to describe and characterize how teammates of a same team are coordinated themselves during various offensive transition situations in situ. For this purpose, we adopt the team cognition’s line of research to describe the way teammates share cognitive contents enabling coordination. First, we have identified knowledge elements shared by players related to offensive transition situation at the beginning of the season. Then, we have characterized (a) the forms of connection between the objectives aimed at by the players, (b) the sharing of contextual information and (c) the sharing of knowledge elements during offensive transition situations. Our results shed the light on new knowledge elements for the comprehension of a team during complex and dynamic situations as such as diversity of shared elements and characterization of the evolution of the forms of sharedness. As a practical perspective, we propose a reflection about soccer training based on the constructive ergonomics approach supporting approach of both capabities and enabling environments for the development of efficacy collective in soccer
