Full textRecently, small businesses have attracted much attention from scholars and businessmen, since the significance of these businesses estimated essential in rapid changing business environment from the perspective of wealth and job creation. Simultaneously, it is well known that most infant entrepreneurs are constrained by shortage of financial resource for development and growth of their business. Some entrepreneurs carry out the need for resources by applying the particular methods of financial bootstrapping. Therefore, a number of researches have been conducted in order to define characteristics of bootstrapping and to analysis how it effects to financial decision making process of entrepreneurs.
Under specific constrains and difficulties, the majority of the start-ups gain financial capital for business establishment from family funds and other informal sources based on personal contacts. Being directly connected with bootstrapping, financial decision making also must be implemented efficiently in the start-up phase of the company. Practically, the majority of nascent entrepreneurs face the lack knowledge about financing of small business frequently. Thus, the study of bootstrapping methods and the exploration of the factors, that effect decision making process, is important for both researchers and entrepreneurs.
The regarding thesis, in turn, examines bootstrapping behavior and financial decision making processes of four different companies in the Create Business Incubator. First of all, it investigates financing, financial choice, network and learning in order to conceptualize appropriate frame for conducting the thesis work. Then, necessary hands-on information obtained by conducting certain interviews and analyzing the networking and coaching circumstances of the Incubator. Consequently, after analyzing the characteristics of business and entrepreneurs, a priori conclusion and recommendations are proposed which help to increase the financial awareness of nascent entrepreneurs in the Incubator in terms of financing small business.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to determine the type of decision-making approaches used by businesswomen, both intrapreneurs and entrepreneurs, under conditions of uncertainty, and how the human and social capital they possess influence their strategic entrepreneurial behaviour (SEB). Entrepreneurial decision making often takes place under uncertain conditions, in which rational models provide little guidance for decision makers. Effectuation is proposed as an alternative decision model to rationality, particularly for emerging opportunities. Although some exploratory work has been conducted on this school of thought, research gaps remain. Particularly, there is a lack of research on businesswomen, despite the fact that they are an important group of entrepreneurs within the economy with great potential to contribute to economic growth, development and employment generation. The study population was South African businesswomen, and the membership register of the South African Businesswomen's Association (BWA) was used as a sampling frame. An online survey was sent to all members and a total of 269 usable responses were obtained. Data were analysed with SPSS using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The findings indicate there are no significant differences between the decisionmaking approaches of intrapreneurs and entrepreneurs, and that they use both effectuation and causation when shaping and implementing new initiatives, while the literature argues that these two approaches are distinct and dichotomous. In using a causal approach, the respondents value planning and a systematic approach to new, uncertain projects, although they realise the benefit of flexibility and of limiting the downside loss to their decisions; therefore they also incorporate elements of effectual logic. Furthermore, businesswomen's ability to cultivate relationships plays an integral role in the SEB process for both effectuation and causation, with businesswomen emphasising their relationships with key stakeholders. Concerning businesswomen's human capital, the study finds that self-efficacy plays an important role in terms of businesswomen's confidence, and that it has an impact on both SEB decision-making approaches. Several theoretical, practical and educational implications arise from these findings. Theoretically, this study contributes to the decision-making literature by showing that businesswomen utilise both decision-making styles and do not merely rely on one or the other. Furthermore, it also shows that relationship cultivation and self-efficacy are significantly related to both SEB approaches. Practically, both businesswomen and other stakeholders, such as financial institutions, should recognise the relevance and importance of using both styles and not stress causation above effectuation, as is the case currently. Furthermore, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, which is relevant for both approaches to SEB, can be raised through investing in targeted training and education in female entrepreneurship. For entrepreneurship educators, these findings emphasise that courses should incorporate both decision-making styles and that these skills should be developed in students. Business management students should be taught that, while logical, planned and prediction-based causal approaches are appropriate under stable conditions, effectuation provides resources to approach uncertain conditions more effectively. In addition, entrepreneurial initiatives with a low degree of innovativeness also would be more suited to a predictive, casual approach, while initiatives with a higher degree of innovativeness would benefit from using effectual principles.

Full textThe management on farms is dynamic, for instance, farmers have to develop new skills to be competitive. Given this scenario where the farmer needs to produce and cater to the consumer market, understanding the behavior of the farmer is relevant. The following research aimed to check the styles of decision making of the farmers and entrepreneurial or not behavior and relate them to the economic performance of the property, in Palmeira das Missoes/RS. Therefore, 101 farmers have been interviewed in all locations of the city at random, aiming to answer the research objectives and conducting descriptive and inferential analysis such as associations, correlations, generalized linear models, factor and cluster. In general, farmers from the town can be characterized with concentration of men in rural, low education, land ownership up to 100 ha, the main activities are grains and dairy cattle and average monthly gross income of R$ 40,770.22. Still, there is heterogeneity amongst farmers, forming two groups, one composed of decision makers with Style 1 and that have little or nothing entrepreneurial behavior, and less education, gross income and SAU. And group 2 comprised of decision makers with style 3, with reasonable entrepreneurial behavior and higher gross income, education and SAU. It is emphasized that the indicators of greatest importance to the gross income were decisions based on intuition/impulse or cost/benefit, risk assessment for model one and behavior to achieve lower cost of production and use of the Internet as an information source for model two. Other factors relevant to the gross incomes were SAU, time management, investment and UTH, it means there is a positive relationship between the variables, or rather when the gross incomes increases there is also an increase in other variables. As for the style of decision making and degree of entrepreneurship, it was observed that the variables have different average investment, SAU, gross income, and education. Therefore, the results show that there are important peculiarities regarding economic performance and that this is influenced by the characteristics of the farmer's property, by the style of decision making and entrepreneurial or not behavior, highlighting the heterogeneity of properties. New possibilities are seen for studies to deepen, through qualitative analysis and economic performance of the properties and their relation to the theoretical study.

Full textBusiness model innovations provide powerful levers for creating sustainable competitive advantage and thus have a positive impact on the value of an enterprise. However, due to the complexity of business models, no practically applicable framework, evaluating an innovative business model with regard to its effect on a company’s success, has been established. Hence, a simulation model assessing the value contribution of a business model innovation is developed. Using the mathematical modeling technique ‘System Dynamics’ to frame the value drivers of a business allows for simulation experiments that reveal the effect of the business model’s design on its profitability, therewith guiding policymakers towards better decisions. As a result, the simulation model reports the net present value of a business model. In addition, the success indicators customer lifetime value and the value of the enterprises’ capabilities are identified as important assets that have to be monitored closely as they determine the company’s prospective performance. The small start-up companies usually face various challenges due to limited resources and funding. This qualitative research aims to provide thinking techniques for company to make better decision while avoid blind spot of linear thinking. The research object is a small business branding company named Dream Makers. The research methods used were in-depth interview and systems thinking which includes both a systems story and casual feedback loop diagram. One of the main findings limiting Dream Makers’ growth is its failure to meet scheduled delivery date. Furthermore, increasing consignment numbers to develop brand awareness and extending labor hours to ease the delivery date have made the problem worse. With the help of systems thinking, the generated solutions to the problem were to recruit and train new talents. Overall, low budget thinking techniques such as Positive, Minus and Interesting (PMI) and PMI+ are essentials for small companies to adopt in their decision-making process, which ultimately will help them to function more efficiently, effectively and proactively.

The spirit of entrepreneurship is growing in Taiwan. According to GEM’s research, a remarkably high level of entrepreneurial intention shows that nearly 26% Taiwanese prepare to start a business within the next three years. Starting a company is not as easy as what most people thinks, examples of entrepreneurs who have failed would be too many to enumerate. How to avoid startup fail is the first question people have to deal with, when they try to start a new business. After A-Team has been founded, Taiwan now plays a central role in the supply chain of bicycle industry. Increasing demand attracts lot of entrepreneurs; the major driver is emergence of cycling as a preferred recreational and fitness activity, rising fuel prices and environmental awareness. Over 50 years of development, the profitable material – carbon become components manufacturers concern. The entrepreneurs of bicycle chain arise from this background, and the research focus on both positive and negative bicycle business cases, assess the direction of the three in-depth interviews, personal circumstances, industry and entrepreneurship opportunities, discuss key business decisions.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a decision-making method to evaluate entrepreneurial strategy of Taiwan sports program. According to the literature review and the investigation of Taiwan sports program experts, the hierarchical structure for evaluating entrepreneurial strategy of Taiwan sports program is established. It is difficult to elicit the complete, precise, and reliable knowledge from the experts. As mentioned above, a fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making method appears to be one of the feasible solutions to handle such difficult problems. The fundamental concepts we have adopted include the expert interview, the eigenvector method, and the fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making method. The fuzzy Delphi method is integrated with the eigenvector method to form a set of pooled weights of the criteria, and the concepts of triangular fuzzy number and linguistic variables are used to assess the preference ratings of linguistic variables, “importance” and “appropriateness”. Through the hierarchy integration, we obtain the final scores of alternatives. Then we use Chen’s ranking method to rank the final scores for choosing the optimal alternative. The purpose of this research is to apply a model of the evaluation of the entrepreneurial strategy of Taiwan sports program. We find there are six main criteria and twenty seven sub-criteria for evaluating the entrepreneurial strategy of Taiwan sports program, with the proposed method, we find the optimal entrepreneurial strategy of Videoland SPORTS is advancing the quality of program.

Full textEntrepreneurial marketing has been attracting growing interest, although it is a fairly young research subject. Its relevance results, on the one hand, from the evidence that small and entrepreneurial firms’ marketing practices often differ from the generally accepted textbook prescriptions, adapting marketing concepts so as to make them more adjusted to their needs. On the other hand, managerial marketing has been the target of some criticism for losing topicality in the complex and fast changing and sometimes chaotic, current business environment. Therefore, developments in marketing/entrepreneurship interface not only can help entrepreneurial firms benefiting more from marketing, but can also offer marketing new perspectives to regain significance in a broader context. The current study aims at contributing to deepen the understanding about the entrepreneurial marketing concept, which is still underdeveloped. Previous research has been focusing mainly on describing the entrepreneurial marketing practices and their characteristics. We propose shifting the focus from the marketing activities themselves to what shapes them, that is, the entrepreneurial marketing decision making process and its cognitive conditions. Based on such conceptualization, the study draws on the cognitive approach to entrepreneurship, particularly the effectuation theory, which inverts the causal rationality underlying the mainstream marketing thought. The Critical Incident Technique was used to collect rich contextualized data about marketing decisions made by entrepreneurs. Results allowed designing an entrepreneurial marketing framework that differs in a great extent from the typical managerial marketing process. Furthermore, we were able to understand how entrepreneurs make marketing decisions and that different types of marketing practices are associated to different decision logics. We also found that the cognitive conditions to decide, namely the level of information available and the processing capacity, affect the marketing decision process and its effects on business development. The study offers several contributions for theory, practice, marketing teaching and policy making. Particularly, it contributes for advancing the understanding of the notion of marketing-incontext by proposing that entrepreneurial marketing and managerial marketing can work in a complementary manner or alternatively in different circumstances.

ABSTRACT: Family firms have a major impact on any economy, being responsible for the largest portion of wealth generation, along with the creation of the majority of jobs in most countries, therefore, playing a central role not only in nations’ economy but also in social growth. These firms are particularly dominant in rural and remote areas, given the inability of large enterprises to operate in such singular socioeconomic settings. This thesis aims to increase the success of family business research in an outermost, ultra-peripheral socioeconomic context, in this case by looking at firms located and operating in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, Portugal. In the course of this thesis three important topics in the family business research are addressed: (1) profile and characterization of family firms, (2) decision making processes, by centering in dual-process theories and (3) entrepreneurship, by focusing on a key construct from the entrepreneurship field - entrepreneurial orientation, resulting in three original research papers. The three papers were developed using a sample of 152 privately held firms family firms (82) and nonfamily (73) firms operating in the Azores. The first paper looks at family firms’ relevant profiling aspects such as ownership and governance, experience and management, and corporate culture. While other demographic indicators are also taken into account, such as, sector of activity, years in business, number of employees, and last year’s turnover. By drawing an initial profile of these companies, in an outermost socioeconomic context, this paper aims to provide an early dataset on family firms in this particular context and shed some light on critical aspects that characterize these companies. In the second paper an effort is made to examine patterns of decision making in family firms, by understanding which decision making style, experiential or rational, their owners and/or managers rely in, while assessing if decision making style in family business is different from nonfamily companies. Furthermore, this paper seeks to explore how family participation and influence in the business relates to the use of experiential or rational decision making styles. Results show that family firms mainly rely in rational decision making, and that family and nonfamily companies differ in the way they make decisions, and that family participation plays an important role in guiding the decision process, by promoting experiential decisions, and suppressing the use of a more rational decision making processes. Finally, in the third paper, we analyze differences between family and nonfamily firms in regards to their entrepreneurial orientation, and the influence of family participation in this construct is also explored. Results suggest that that there are differences between family and nonfamily firms in regards to entrepreneurial orientation, and in two of its three components (innovativeness, risk taking and proactiveness). In short, family firms tend to be less entrepreneurially oriented and innovative, but more risk averse than nonfamily firms, however both types of companies do not differ in terms of proactiveness. Furthermore, the findings show that family participation is negatively associated with entrepreneurial orientation and its three components. This thesis provides a set of findings that contribute to an improved understanding of family firms in outermost socioeconomic contexts, offering important theoretical and practical implications, thus bridging academics and practitioners.
