Abstract:
Retail realists advocate abandoning wholesale arguments, which concern the reality of theoretical entities in general, and embracing retail arguments, which concern the reality of particular kinds of theoretical entities. They can thus be realists about some and anti-realists about others. But realism about a kind of entity can take different forms depending on how retail realists individuate kinds of entities. This chapter introduces the notion of the inclusiveness of individuation: the more inclusively we individuate a kind of entity, the more theories there are in which it appears. The form of realism that retail realists accept regarding a particular kind of entity can be more selective or more encompassing depending on how inclusively they individuate that kind of entity. This chapter illustrates these ideas in terms of a case from the history of chemistry involving the hypothetical component of hydrochloric acid known as the muriatic radical.

Abstract:
In the chapter titled ‘The Categorial Scheme’, Whitehead introduces a new distinction, doubtless the most important in Processand Reality as well as the most difficult to understand: actual entities are distinct from what he terms ‘eternal objects’. This unequivocally expresses the importance of eternal objects. They are placed on the same plane as actual entities, with which they share a common characteristic of being the ‘fundamental types of entities’: ‘actual entities and eternal objects stand out with a certain extreme finality’ (PR, 22). We are now at a point where there can be no doubt as to the place occupied by actual entities in Process and Reality. They form the centrepiece of the entire speculative construction. When Whitehead writes in the preface that the ‘positive doctrine of these lectures is concerned with the becoming, the being, and the relatedness of “actual entities”’, it is now clear that he was literally expressing the project of the book.

Abstract:
Evolutionary processes combine many features of complex systems: they are algorithmic; states co-evolve with interactions; they show power law statistics; they are selforganized critical; and they are driven non-equilibrium systems. Evolution is a dynamical process that changes the composition of large sets of interconnected elements, entities, or species over time. The essence of evolutionary processes is that, through the interaction of existing entities with each other and with their environment, they give rise to an open-ended process of creation and destruction of new entities. Evolutionary processes are critical, co-evolutionary, and combinatorial, meaning that thew entities are created from combinations of existing ones. We review the concepts of the replicator equation, fitness landscapes, cascading events, the adjacent possible. We review several classical quantitative approaches to evolutionary dynamics such as the NK model and the Bak–Snappen model. We propose a general and universal framework for evolutionary dynamics that is critical, co-evolutionary, and combinatorial.

Abstract:
In this chapter we consider whether, in applying mathematics in the ways described in previous chapters, there are grounds for taking the relevant mathematical entities to be indispensable. Our example here is Dirac’s introduction of the delta function into quantum mechanics and we point out, firstly, that Dirac himself was very clear about the function’s dispensability and, secondly, even if certain mathematical theories were indispensable, this wouldn’t justify a commitment to the existence of the associated entities. To illustrate this second point we use a further example, that of Dirac’s prediction of the existence of antimatter via the exploitation of surplus mathematical structure. We maintain here that commitment to the existence of the objects under consideration requires the satisfaction of certain criteria of existence and it is unclear whether mathematical entities meet these criteria.
