Abstract:
Enterprise systems and applications are getting more and more complex. In 30 years computing has transformed from big single machines to highly heterogeneous systems. Businesses are today depending on a super-sized mixed bag of applications that have been introduced over the years. Businesses have much to gain by obtaining a holistic view of their data and integrating business processes that are spread over different systems. This master of thesis explores critical success factors (CSF) for enterprise application integration (EAI) from the perspective of developing new application into such environment. Based on current research in the field of EAI, and experiences gained from a real-life scenario the report argues for the importance of integration and what the most influential factors for success are. Among many significantly important factors, two main trends emerge as especially important: developer guidance and documentation, and integration functionality. The former leads to success by focusing on developer productivity through the use scorecards, principles and guidance, well-specified interfaces, and skilled EAI employees; and the latter by extending integration functionality to include many-tomany integration strategies and workflows to model the business.

Abstract:
The goals for this study were twofold. The first goal was to identify planning variables for linking both organizational and architectural objectives for developing enterprise integration architecture. The second goal was to validate enterprise integration modeling methodology as a viable planning tool for the design, development, and maintenance of the enterprise integration architecture. This lack of linkage at the intellectual dimension level can be characterized as having a dysfunctional effect on enterprise integration strategy formulation and infrastructure development. There is a disjoint between adoptions of appropriate information technology in relation to organizational objectives. This includes misapplication of investments in information technology selection and business systems development portfolio, failed information systems projects, architectures that do not support the strategic direction, and the organization's inability to manage change associated with environmental imperatives that impact the firm's ability to define information technology and systems requirements for competitive positioning. In order to achieve the objectives the author in this research, developed a conceptual Enterprise Integration Architecture Planning Model and Methodology (EIAPMIM) model as the basis for linking enterprise integration architecture objectives and organizational objectives. Research data confirmed the need to effect linkages between organizational objectives and architectural objectives to achieve enterprise integration and validated enterprise integration modeling as the means by which enterprise integration architecture is developed.

Abstract:
Today, with various technology and business standards, organizations face rapid changes in both internal and external environments. To be able to rapidly respond to such changing environments, integration of software systems has entered among the top priorities of many organizations. However, despite extended use of software integration, methods for estimating the business value of implementing such integration are still missing. Besides presenting a conceptual model to define the benefits of systems integration and related causal relationships, this study proposes a method for measuring such benefits in monetary terms. In particular, we  demonstrate how a mathematical programming technique called Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) can be used to evaluate the business value of software integration. Our method is illustrated using data from 12 organizations. The results indicate significant productivity gains by integrating software systems, which represent the value of software integration in organizations.

Abstract:
In order to remain competitive, the integration of their information systems is an imperative for many large organisations. Applications that originally have been developed independently are now required to interoperate to support new or different functions of the enterprise. Although the mechanisms for application interoperation exist provided by the technology, due to the sheer number and complexity of the running systems, integration solutions centralised or distributedappropriate at the local level do not translate successfully to the whole enterprise. Centralised integration approaches often satisfy only some of the integration requirements, they are very expensive, and are fraught with danger since they imply an all or nothing approach. Distributed approaches, on the other hand, suffer from complexity and scalability problems as the number of system interfaces to be implemented and the number of execution-time invocations grows with the number of component applications. This dissertation makes a contribution to the field of Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) within the framework of distributed systems technology. Based on real-life case studies experience, we present here a federated approach that controls the size and complexity of the integration effort by reusing existing systems as much as possible and reducing the number of interacting applications. Only selected local elements are exposed to the organisational milieu, and a consistent supporting infrastructure is provided to make systems interactions possible. Our approach provides a flexible and scalable strategy to enterprise integration, avoiding the shortcomings of traditional approaches. We respect existing organisational structures, and demonstrate how appropriate federation infrastructure and protocols enable the interoperation of existing systems. The three main facets of enterprise knowledge are systematically incorporated into the integration effort: a) by the use of domain ontologies to support data integration; b) by the development of a methodology to include business rules; and c) by the development of FEW, a federated workflow model to implement the business processes of the organisation.

Hazenberg, Richard. "Work integration social enterprise : a NEET idea." Thesis, University of Northampton, 2012. http://nectar.northampton.ac.uk/4965/.

Full text
Abstract:
The on-going global economic difficulties and the subsequent increases in unemployment have led the UK government to look at innovative ways of reintegrating unemployed people back into work. Nowhere is this more critical than in the area of youth unemployment, which in the UK is steadily rising for young people aged 16-24 years who are not in employment, education or training (NEET). As part of this strategy work-integration social enterprises (WISEs) have become providers of employment enhancement programmes (EEPs) that aim to improve the employability of NEETs, in part due to the 'added value' that WISEs are seen to bring to such programmes. However, this perception, along with the requirements of public funding contracts, creates a pressure on WISEs to demonstrate such 'added value' through rigorous evaluation procedures. However, there is little academic research that both attempts to measure WISE performance in relation to 'outcomes' and to understand how organisational type and structure affects this. This research study takes a comparative, multi-case study approach to study three separate work-integration organisations delivering EEPs to NEETs. Two of these organisations are WISEs and the other organisation is a 'for-profit' private company utilised in this study as a comparison group. In order to provide a rigorous measure of outcome, all participants completed three different self-efficacy scales and engaged in individual semi-structured interviews with researchers before and after engagement in their respective programmes (Time 1 & Time 2). Results from the qualitative analysis of the interviews and the statistical analysis of the questionnaire data are triangulated to evaluate the outcome from all three programmes, providing the participant perspective alongside changes in self-efficacy. In addition, semi-structured interviews and focus groups were held with the owners and staff at the organisations respectively, in order to elicit understanding of how the differing aims, values and structures present at each organisation impacted upon the delivery of the programmes and hence upon the outcome benefits experienced by the NEETs. The results of the research provide an opportunity to compare and contrast programmes delivered by social enterprises with that of a 'for-profit' company in order to give an insight into programme and outcome differences based upon the orientation of the delivery organisation. Results revealed no significant difference between the outcome benefits experienced by the NEETs at the WISEs and those NEETs present at the for-profit comparison group. However, analysis of the effect of the organisational aims, values and structures upon the delivery of EEPs, suggests that the 'added value' offered by WISEs, whilst not immediately evident in the outcome data, came from the induction policies that they operated and their willingness to work with more socially excluded individuals.

Abstract:
Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) concerns connecting systems together to meet demands that could not be met by either system individually, or to establish new channels for communication within and between enterprises. As the systems and their underlying technologies have become more advanced, the task of integrating them has become a more complicated one. By making a case study bound to an integration project at an enterprise, this study aims to identify pitfalls that could constitute risks for such projects. The main goal is for the analysis of these pitfalls to guide developers to avoid the pitfalls in their own projects. Several pitfalls were identified by analyzing documentation and reflecting on the course of the project. The pitfall that had the greatest impact during the project was unclear requirements. The pitfalls are analyzed with emphasis on circumstances under which they were discovered and contributing factors are reasoned about. For the pitfalls that were actual challenges for the case study, analysis also covers how they were avoided, while potential solutions are discussed for the remainder.

Persson, Staffan. "Introducing Continuous Integration in an Enterprise Scale Environment." Thesis, Uppsala University, Department of Information Technology, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-88744.

Abstract:

This thesis investigates how continuous integration best should be incorporated into a current development environment in order to acquire a shorter time for the regression testing feedback loop. The product in target is a high availability enterprise scale software product within mobile telecom. It utilizes a large commercial relational database for customer associated data and employs approximately one hundred designers.

A continuous integration system needs automatic database integration, compilation, testing, inspection, deployment, and feedback. Measures that are valuable to the build process regardless of build time should be given the highest priorities of implementation. Feedback has been developed in the form of Continuous Integration Web. The first priority at this stage is to introduce unit testing of the database which also has to be automatically built whenever updated or changed.

The amount of time used to integrate should be as close to ten minutes as possible. This goal is reachable if the build process is split into at least two integrations by differentiating unit tests from component tests and, if the software’s functionally divided parts are built separately on local integration servers.

Starting integrations automatically could potentially allow broken source code to reside in the source code repository. This problem can however be mitigated with the aid of good routines and sufficient communication between developers and the continuous integration server. If the latter is possible it is recommended to make use of a continuous integration server. Otherwise it is recommended to perform integrations manually.

Abstract:
Due to the rapid changing environment many organizations are striving to achieve agility and flexibility in internal and external environments. In order for an enterprise to be able to respond to this changing environment, it must integrate the business functions into a distinct system that is capable of exploiting information technology competently. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) mainly focused on integrating internal business functions and implementing an ERP system requires a significant amount of time and financial resources. Moreover, ERP systems are complex, non-flexible and are not capable of collaborating with autonomous application leading to difficulty in integration and customization [3]. Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) is an alternate technology to ERP where the integration process is automated without much effort. This research work mainly focuses on designing an order processing system using the concepts of EAI for Intra Organization in any small and medium enterprises (SME’s). As a result of this research work, a five layered architecture has been designed which can be integrated in any enterprise without affecting the existing business workflow. This architecture is categorized into Data Layer, Middleware Layer, Event Generation Layer, Translation Layer and Interface layer. Further to actually test the extent and reliability of this architecture a prototype system implementation is built at Hyundai Mobis Parts- Sweden, using the concepts of EAI. In addition the evaluation of the prototype system is performed to check the above defined layers of the architecture.

Abstract:
In addition to storing 70-75% of their data and business logic in legacy mainframe systems, global corporations have countless custom applications and off-the-shelf ERP products residing within their networks. Increasing competition and shrinking budgets have left managers scouring for innovative, cost-effective methods to maximize the potential of these enormous sunk costs. There is, as a result, an overwhelming need to not only web enable these existing legacy assets in order to quickly and cost-effectively deliver data to both customers and business partners alike, but also to amalgamate these disparate systems into a unified, homogeneous, real-time enterprise. Integration efforts to date, focused predominantly on the development of proprietary point-to-point adapters, have unfortunately proven to be a daunting task with countless failed projects and losses in the millions. The advent of XML web services does, however, have the potential to revolutionize existing integration strategies; the cost savings and ease of implementation associated with wrapping virtually all systems, past, present and future, with standardized, code-independent, data-centric interfaces is truly astounding. As the future success of this platform is, however, strictly dependent upon the interoperability of its endpoints, we have proposed several fundamental amendments to the existing flawed WSDL specification. A generic reference architecture, leveraging both this improved web services model as well as established component middleware technologies, is then proposed for the web enablement of legacy assets on an enterprise scale. In order to ensure the adoption of this methodology, a toolkit designed to automate the transformation has also been devised. This new paradigm will not only allow information to flow freely from deep within the enterprise, but will ultimately serve as the cornerstone of a new generation of enterprise integration solutions.

Abstract:
Context. Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) are information systems that manage manufacturing processes in factories. The execution of MES processes requires non-enterprise integration, which integrates MES applications, services, and automation systems within the factories. Objectives. We aim at developing a modeling approach that can be used to represent and execute MES processes. Having such an approach would help MES vendors to reduce the development cost to reconfigure systems, in order to achieve better business flexibility. Methods. In order to understand the state of the art of manufacturing modeling techniques, we perform a systematic literature review (SLR) in scientific article sources, including IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, Compendex, Inspec, and Springer Link. In consideration of the criteria in modeling and executing MES processes, we evaluate the selected process modeling techniques. Based on the result of evaluation, we propose a three-view-based approach to support process execution. We develop a prototype to prove that an MES process can be executed by following our approach. We also conduct semi-structured interviews in industry to validate whether our proposed approach achieves the objectives. Results. In the SLR, 24 primary studies are selected. Our analysis reveals that existing modeling techniques have limitations to enable process execution. To overcome the limitation, we propose a three-view-based approach, which has an MES process view, an abstract plant view to represent the structure of technical systems, and a mapping view to enable the communication between MES tasks and the technical systems. We develop a prototype as the implementation of our approach, which comprises: a graphical editor for the abstract plant view, a generator of message routes for the mapping view, and a typical MES process to be executed in the context of a warehouse management system. The semi-structured interviews we conducted with three industrial experts show positive feedback to use and generalize our approach in industry, in case comprehensive tools can be established. Conclusions. Compared to the existing modeling techniques, the three-view-based approach is specifically tailored toward process execution. Based on the feedback from industry, we conclude that applying our approach provides the possibility to achieve better reconfigurability and flexibility of MES.

Over the last decade, many companies in industries that produce complex and technologically-advanced products have begun to integrate their operations along the value chains of the primary products they design, produce or sustain. Increasingly, integration efforts have moved beyond the boundaries of the core or focal enterprise serving as the prime contractor or system integrator to span the entire value chain, to form virtual extended enterprises. These structures allow the members of the virtual extended enterprise to focus on their core competencies in order to collaboratively deliver a world-class product at a competitive price. While integration offers many benefits to enterprises, a high degree of integration is not always desirable or advantageous in a limited duration virtual extended enterprise composed of autonomous companies. Virtual extended enterprises must find a balance between decoupled collaboration and highly coupled integration, balancing the need to closely coordinate their efforts with the need protect the autonomy of their members. The objective of this research is to explore the extent to which a focal enterprise, such as a prime contractor or system integrator, should consider integration across its virtual extended enterprise, identify major barriers to integration, and define key enablers of integration overcoming these barriers.
(cont.) Analysis focuses on the extent of integration based on the characteristics of the virtual extended enterprise, such as the duration and scope of the program in question, product system architecture, the organizational architecture, and the external environment. In particular, three key conceptual dimensions of integration are developed and explored-technological integration, strategic integration, and organizational integration. This framework is applied in an in-depth case study of integration strategies on the virtual extended enterprise of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Program. The knowledge gained from the case study is used to make recommendations for the development of integration strategies for future programs.

Abstract:

If today’s software systems and their complex applications shall be able to integrate with each

other, they have to communicate through services. This service oriented integration can be

accomplished by using Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) where all components are

loosely coupled and communicate in a standardized way. An important part when building an

integrated solution is the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). In this report we will explain the

basics of SOA and take a more detailed look at the world of ESB. The concept of ESB is not

well defined and hence means different things to different people. We are going to present an

interpretation of the ESB and its benefits and disadvantages. To find out what the market

President Obama, the Secretary of the Homeland Security and other senior federal officials have emphasized that, in order to make our country safe and resilient, all levels of government, non-governmental organizations and the private sector must all work together. This commitment to the shared responsibility requires the White House National Security Staff to make a commitment to engage meaningfully with stakeholders in the mission, through increased transparency and direct consultation. Continued engagement will not only build trust and support from those entities, but it will greatly improve the homeland security enterprise. This research set out to identify a model for the White House National Security Staff to consider using that would provide the most effective and efficient manner for the National Security Staff to engage local, state, tribal, non-governmental and private sector partners to achieve an integrated homeland security policy.

Themistocleous, Marinos G. "Evaluating the adoption of enterprise application integration in multinational organisations." Thesis, Brunel University, 2002. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5524.

Full text
Abstract:
A review of normative literature, in the field of Information Systems (IS) integration, indicates that traditional approaches to applications integration have failed to result in flexible and maintainable IT infrastructures. In addressing this issue, a new technology called Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) has emerged and addresses most of integration problems by resulting in the development of reusable and manageable IT infrastructures. Enterprise application integration is a new research area with many research issues needing to be investigated. At this end, EAI adoption has not efficiently studied with organisations and researchers needing to understand and analyse EAI adoption. This work examines the introduction of enterprise application integration in multinational organisations and proposes a novel model for its adoption. The model is based on a comprehensive set of factors that influence the introduction of EAI in organisations. Since there is an absence of theoretical models for EAI adoption, the proposed model adapts factors that influence the adoption of other integration technologies such as Electronic Data Interchange (EDT). Additional factors like an evaluation framework that supports decision making have been considered by the author as factors that influence EAI adoption. In moving from the conceptual to the empirical, the work is based on a qualitative case study approach to examine the concepts of the proposed model for the adoption of EAI. In doing so, two case studies were conducted at multinational organisations and presented and analysed. However, during the empirical research complementary factors also emerged, which resulted in modifications being made to the previously presented conceptual model. In interpreting from empirical data, it appears that ten main factors influence the adoption of EAT namely: (a) benefits; (b) barriers; (c) costs; (d) internal pressures; (e) external pressures; (f) IT infrastructure; (g) IT sophistication; (h) an evaluation framework for the assessment of integration technologies; (i) evaluation framework for the assessment of EAT packages and, (j) support. The proposed model makes novel contribution at two levels. First, at the conceptual level, as it incorporates factors identified separately in previous studies as influencing adoption of other integration technologies. These factors are used for the development of a consistent model for the adoption and evaluation of EAT. Secondly, the concepts of the proposed model can be used for the adoption of inter-organisational information systems. The proposed model can be used as a decision-making tool to support management when taking decisions regarding the adoption of EAI. Additionally, it can be used by researchers to analyse and understand the adoption of application integration.

Abstract:
Title: Critical Success Factors for Integration of Enterprise Resource Planning System   Level: Student thesis, final assignment for Master Degree (one year) in Business Administration   Author: Kambiz Kafi   Supervisor: Dr. Maria Fregidou-Malama   Examiner: Dr. Ehsanul Huda Chowdhury   Date: 2018-11-26   Aim: This study examines the Critical Success Factor (CSF) model and its implementation in a case study where ERP Systems are integrated. The model includes Legacy System as a CSF.   Method: Deductive reasoning and case study were applied to support the research theory. Primary and secondary data were collected. Interviews with managers and staffs were performed.   Result & Conclusions: The study shows the factors that are critical in successful implementation of ERP project and how a successful implementation and integration of ERP projects is executed when two companies are being merged. It also shows how the ERP integration project can be implemented. This work studied an implementation of Holland and Light’s theoretical CSF model empirically and validated that the model is general and robust for successful ERP implementation and managing changes.   Contribution of the research: This study of integration of few Legacy Systems when companies are being merged is a contribution to the theory of CSF. The central role that Legacy Systems plays in ERP project implementation is shown empirically. This study presents Software Alignment (Software Configuration) based on two company’s business processes empirically and found it to be essential in success of ERP projects. The research shows how CSF model manages changes, assisting managers in merging two companies successfully. The research presents a modified Holland and Light CSF model to meet the merging situations.      Suggestions for future research: To gain more knowledge about CSFs for integration of ERPs, this study suggests further cross- industrial empirical studies in wholesale and retail industries with varied sizes. Research about identifying CFSs in extended ERP using e_CRM is recommended.

Abstract:
The software testing team at Scania use a manual and time consuming process to restore a test vehicle after working with it. Several different applications are used in this process to ensure the vehicle is in the same state as it was before their testing. To improve the workflow with a reduced workload and a more robust process, the test team was interested in the development of a restoration application. It was desired to develop the restoration application by reusing the components to the greatest possible extend. Since there were many components that fulfilled the needs of most functions, a pre-study of all the applications was done to decide which components can be re-used. This was study was based on the integration model, Enterprise Application Integration, which aims to create a single product combining the applications used in an organization to simplify processes such as maintenance, data management and employee training. A prototype was developed which implements three existing modules on different levels and, in line with the goals of EAI, is itself a simple application that enables the components to work in unision

Abstract:
Over the decades, as organizations begin to move globally there has been a sporadic flow of information in their supply chain. Competition today is forcing companies to integrate tightly with their suppliers and customers, in order to reduce the time available to flex the supply chain (SC) (Koh S.C, Saad S, Arunachalam S, 2006). The integration of firms and departments and information is getting more and more complicated. Regardless of enterprise system solutions being introduced as “integrated suites” they have failed to accomplish application and supply chain integration (Themistocleous, M. Irani, Z. O‟Keefe, and R. 2001). Therefore, this thesis aims to explore, gain better understanding and to explain the balance that may occur between the challenges and benefits gained from integrating enterprise resource planning and supply chain management. Our topic of interest could be view from both developers and user perspective. Developer/consultant‟s perspective is based on the viewpoint of those involved in and responsible for developing enterprise solutions. User‟s perspective, this perspective gives insight to how the integration process is perceived by organisations actually using the solutions. We chose the User perspective because we consider the user to be the direct beneficiary of whatever outcome is gotten from both the business solutions and its integration. In order to achieve a purposeful thesis. We decided to use an interpretive perspective which focus on exploring and gaining insight into issues of integrating enterprise system solution. We used both the inductive and the deductive approaches in our research. This would be advantageous due to the nature of our research topic, as there is little existing knowledge about the integration of enterprise systems solution within supply chain and there are lots of literatures related to the enterprise system solutions (ERP and SCM) been observed. The inductive approach would guide us to choose one or a few specific interactions to explore in-depth, while the deductive approach would aid us when making an hypothesis, since we would be collecting ideas about previous research and theories in order to guide us and make comparison.Conclusively, we found that the balance between challenges and benefits of ERP and SCM are unequivocal, as the benefits surpass the challenges and the effect of challenges on organisation‟s benefit is that it prolongs the short term benefit.

Abstract:
Consumer technology adoption into large enterprise environments is occurring at an unprecedented rate. Employees require the flexibility and efficiency of using operating systems, computers, and mobility products they are familiar with and that enable their productivity. Due to this industry phenomenon, one large shipping enterprise must work to create solutions to integrate Apple’s OS X operating system into its traditional Windows-based operating environment. This level of integration must take place carefully to enable usability and foster the continued data security of enterprise assets. This paper describes the steps and methodology taken, as well as the rationale used, to accomplish the task of integrating Apple’s FileVault 2 full disk encryption technology into existing McAfee management infrastructure and traditional deployment and support workflows. Using a combination of industry and community solutions and techniques, a low-cost software solution named EscrowToEPO is created to facilitate the secure and user-friendly adoption of FileVault 2 as a full disk encryption solution. This paper also includes the success/failure rate of adoption and implications as to how the adoption of similar solutions can occur to support future operating systems or other environments.

Abstract:
This thesis studies the process of extracting business value from Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) through integration. The main premise is that performance differences across firms investing in similar ERP systems can be attributed to differences in the way the technology (ERP) is integrated with the actual IT infrastructure and business processes of the firm. Drawing on the entrepreneurship and integration literature, this thesis focuses on the antecedents of integration and its impact on business process performance. To better understand this phenomenon, this thesis adopts a multi-method and multi-essay approach. The first essay looks at how different degrees of integration are achieved by looking at the effect of managers' alertness and search activity on integration. It also demonstrates the influence of perceived gap as a trigger of search. The second essay develops and proposes a measure of integration in an ERP context at the module level. Finally, the last essay applies the notion of integration to better understand its effect on business process performance by looking at its antecedents and how different degrees of integration influence the performance of the business processes. All essays are empirical; case studies for the first one and survey for the last two essays. These essays can be seen as components of an integrative investigation of the issue of ERP value creation through integration, which is likely to help us understand how and under which circumstances ERP systems can produce value for the firms implementing them.

Abstract:
Electronic message transfer is the key element in enterprise application integration (EAI) and the privacy of data transferred must be protected by the systems involved in the message transfer from origin to the destination. The recent data privacy regulation such as GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) has enforced the organizations to ensure the privacy of the personal data handled with obligations to provide visibility and control over to the data owner. Privacy concerns with relevant to sensitive data embedded and transferred through business-to-business (B2B) middleware platforms in enterprise architecture are mostly at risk with the legacy nature of the products and the complexity of system integrations. This poses a great threat and challenge to organizations processing sensitive data over the interconnected systems in complying with regulatory requirements.  This research proposes a solution design to address the data privacy issues related to personal data handled in an enterprise application integration framework. Where electronic messages used to transfer personally identifiable information (PII). The proposal consisting of a design called “Safety Locker” to issue unique tokens related to encrypted PII elements stored in a persistence data storage based on Apache Ignite. While adding REST API interfaces to access the application functionality such as tokenization, de-tokenization, token management and accessing audit logs. The safety locker can run as a standalone application allowing clients to access its functionality remotely utilizing hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP). The design allows the data controllers to ensure the privacy of PII by embedding tokens generated from the application within the electronic messages transferred through interconnected systems. The solution design is evaluated through a proof of concept implementation, which can be adapted, enhanced to apply in EAI implementations.

Abstract:
Data Integration is currently an important and complex topic for many companies, because having a good and working Data Integration solution can bring multiple advantages over competitors. Data Integration is usually being executed in a form of a project, which might easily turn into failure. In order to decrease risks and negative impact of a failed Data Integration project, there needs to be good project management, Data Integration knowledge and the right technology in place. This thesis provides a framework for setting up a good Data Integration solution. The framework is developed based on the current theory, currently available Data Integration tools and opinions provided by experts working in the field for a minimum of 7+ years and have proven their skills with a successful Data Integration project. This thesis does not guarantee the development of the right Data Integration solution, but it does provide guidance how to deal with a Data Integration project in a large enterprise. This thesis is structured into seven chapters. The first chapter brings an overview about this thesis such as scope, goals, assumptions and expected value. The second chapter describes Data Management and basic Data Integration theory in order to distinguish these two topics and to explain the relationship between them. The third chapter is focused purely on Data Integration theory which should be known by everyone who participates in a Data Integration project. The fourth chapter analyses features of the current Data Integration solutions available on the market and provides an overview of the most common and necessary functionalities. Chapter five focuses on the practical part of this thesis, where the Data Integration framework is designed based on findings from previous chapters and interviews with experts in this field. Chapter six then applies the framework to a real working (anonymized) Data Integration solution, highlights the gap between the framework and the solution and provides guidance how to deal with the gaps. Chapter seven provides a resume, personal opinion and outlook.

Molenaar, Pieter. "The integration of enterprise asset management and the supply chain / Pieter Molenaar." Thesis, Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/9718.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was born out of the author's hands-on experience of pioneering the integration of Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) and the Supply Chain (SC). This first happened during a project undertaken as Project Manager during 1999- 2000 in which there came an understanding of the relationship between the two disciplines, which now forms the basis of this thesis. A supply chain is the movement of materials in response to the demand for a product. The traditional supply chain consists of five functions namely Buy, Move, Store, Make, and Sell. This is a perfect fit for a production environment. With supply chains has come the need to manage and optimise them. This discipline is called Supply Chain Management (SCM) and is about ensuring supply meets demand. Supply chain management has become a vital aspect for companies striving to improve their competitive edge and profitability and the number one strategic priority for manufacturing executives. Enterprise asset management is the discipline of improving the Return On Investment (ROI) and Return On Assets (ROA) of capital-intensive assets through their effective and efficient management. Companies seldom have the opportunity to apply asset management in the planning, acquisition, installation, and disposal phases of an asset's life cycle. Due to this EAM has become associated with the maintenance life cycle of assets only. To achieve more profitable supply chain operations, companies are moving towards integrated supply and demand planning. In a process-manufacturing environment it is not simply a case of setting up a production schedule in response to an accurate end-user "demand signal" but includes the demand set by . plant assets for Maintenance, Repair and Operating (MRO) materials. There is a definite interdependency between EAM and SCM. To integrate the two is not only desirable, but also essential. The market has stopped thinking of the supply chain as a simplified series of events. It's a highly complex network of related supply chains required to manufacture a finished product. DNA Enterprise Asset Management (DNA EAM), a company that is part of DNA Supply Chain Investments Limited (DNA SC), came to realise this in its drive to optimise assets. It investigated the MRO supply chain and found the traditional supply chain to be unsuitable for MRO materials. DNA EAM found a second supply chain within the "Make" function of the traditional (production) supply chain. It is a supply chain that is initiated when a plant is in operation and is in the service and support of assets. The integrated Enterprise Asset Management Supply Chain (EAM SC) model consists of an Operate, Buy, Move, Store and Maintain function. DNA EAM calls the integrated asset management supply chain the Indirect supply chain and the production supply chain the Direct supply chain. The Maintenance and Repair (M&R) demand signal is the integrator between asset management and the supply chain. There are several ways that the demand signal can be enhanced. Most noticeably it is enhanced by changing from corrective to preventive maintenance, using scientific optimisation techniques such as Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM), and the correct selection and implementation of EAM software. DNA EAM has commercialised the indirect supply chain. The value proposition is based on greater profitability due to increased production revenue and savings on operational expenses, and reduced life cycle costs of assets through decreased M&R inventories and asset support costs. The power of the indirect supply chain lies not with the value proposition or commercialisation of it, but the understanding, clarity, and unification of the two disciplines.

Kamal, Muhammad Mustafa. "Investigating enterprise application integration (EAI) adoption in the local government authorities (LGAs)." Thesis, Brunel University, 2008. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5215.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis focuses on investigating Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) adoption in the Local Government Authorities (LGAs). EAI has emerged to support organisations to integrate their Information Technology (IT) infrastructures and deliver high quality of services. Despite the fact that several private and public organisations have adopted EAI, its application in LGAs is limited. This may illustrate that LGAs develop EAI solutions at a slower pace and they can be characterised as a laggard comparing to other sectors. The small number of EAI applications in LGAs has resulted in limited research in this area with many issues, like its adoption requiring further investigation. Literature indicates various models that analyse various factors influencing EAI adoption in the private and public domain. However, the applicability and validity of these models is arguable and under research in LGAs, as these were proposed to support the decision-making process in other sectors and not in LGAs. To the best of the researcher's knowledge, none of the existing EAI adoption models explored the importance of factors during different phases of the adoption lifecycle. Notwithstanding, the implications of EAI have yet to be assessed, leaving scope for timeliness and novel research. Thus, the researcher demonstrates that it is of high importance to investigate this area within LGAs and result in research that contributes towards successful EAI adoption. This thesis makes a step forward and contributes to the body of knowledge as it: investigates factors influencing the decision making process for EAI adoption in LGAs (Figure 3.2), analyses and proposes the adoption lifecycle phases (Figure 3.3), maps and prioritises the importance of EAI adoption factors on different phases of the adoption lifecycle (Chapter 5 for empirical results) and in doing so, to propose a model for EAI adoption in LGAs (Figure 3.7). The researcher claims that such an EAI adoption process in LGAs is significant and novel as: it extends established norms for EAI adoption, by including Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique for prioritising the importance of factors, thus, enabling LGAs to produce more robust proposals for EAI adoption. The researcher discusses on EAI adoption by using a qualitative, interpretive, multiple case study research strategy. Findings from three case organisations exhibit that such an approach contributes towards more robust decisions for EAI adoption and indicates that it is acceptable by the case organisations. Despite these results cannot be generalised, yet they can allow others to relate their views with the ones reported in this thesis. This thesis proposes, tests and presents a novel model for EAI adoption in LGAs and contributes to the body of knowledge by extending the literature.

Abstract:
The nonprofit sector is increasingly engaged in social enterprise, which involves a combination and balancing of social mission and business goals which can cause mission drift or mission tension. A work integrated social enterprise (WISE) is a specific type of social enterprise that focuses on integrating hard-to-employ individuals, such as ex offenders, back into the workforce, usually through producing goods or offering services. Little is known about how WISE organizations manage mission drift, particularly given the unique characteristics of this type of organization. Using institutional values theory and resource dependence theory as the foundation, the purpose of this case study was to explore how a WISE in Indiana experience and manage mission drift and mission tension. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with 4 board members and 4 staff persons, and from organizational documents. All data were inductively coded and subjected to a constant, comparative analysis between empirical and predictive themes. The study revealed the organization has not experienced mission drift or mission tension because, (a) there was a strong mission and a commitment by the board and staff to the mission, (b) there was a constant balancing act between mission and income, (c) business goals aligned with mission, and (d) operating systems were in place for mission sustainability. The positive social change implications stemming from this study include providing beneficial information about best practices and strategies to other organizations seeking to develop WISE programs that provide opportunities and training for difficult to employ populations.

Abstract:
The rapid increase in smartphone usage has led enterprises to start adapting their internal systems for use with smartphones; so called mobile enterprise applications. Previous research show that these mobile applications can increase the efficiency, satisfaction and productivity of a company's workforce. Developing and deploying the applications is far from trivial, and companies have struggled to fully adopt enterprise mobility. This paper gives a detailed description of the development and implementation of two smartphone applications for internal use at two companies. Through two case studies consisting of an app analysis and interviews with key stakeholders, the research presented focuses on addressing the research question: how do new smartphone applications fit into existing systems to provide added value to companies? The results show that even though the apps developed are simple in their functionality, the fact that they are used on mobile devices makes them valuable in itself. From the companies’ perspectives, availability and connectivity were the two most important aspects of the applications - they provided easy access to company information. Developmental obstacles were also identified, most notably how to integrate the apps with the different internal systems already in place. The usefulness of mobile enterprise applications is discussed, and guidelines for future stakeholders and developers are suggested to make transformations into mobile enterprises easier.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The mobile market is growing. More and more business units, (BUs) at the multinational company ABB start considering utilizing mobility to create business value, by offering product/system enhancement and by offering new services. However, at present, there is no standard way to realize this and they struggle with the security challenges for their solution. This thesis work will focus on investigating the Mobile Device Management (MDM) market and analyze how the existing technologies address all security requirements of a mobility solution. The main goal is to investigate how multi criteria methods can be applied to facilitate the choice of the most adequate MDM tool. It needs to provide a secure common architecture and integrate with existing backend infrastructures. The benefits include: (1) enabling the employees to use their own mobile devices in a secure way for working with the enterprise, (2) reliably integrating a backend system for new services in enterprise mobility, and (3) providing a (proven) secure solution to control and manage mobility on MDM technology.

Abstract:
The widespread recognition of Information Technology (IT) as either an agent of enterprise transformation or as a driver of new enterprise forms is due to several factors. Grove (1996) and Lewis (2000) suggests that chief amongst them is the ceaseless and pace of change in both the qualitative and quantitative nature of IT with its use at every level of the enterprise hierarchy, This research study analyses the rise and fall of strategic IT planning tools and with an aim to achieve business impact. The study identifies new approaches for achieving alignment, by considering the concept of the `adaptive enterprise. ' Impact factors are developed from previous research studies covering effectiveness, efficiency, user needs, synergy and market competitiveness. Adaptation behaviours are derived from studies performed by Haekel (1999) with enterprise cultures types researched developed by Trompenaars (2000). Hypothesis aimed at investigating the relationships between these factors are then derived. Initial complex statistical analysis reveal limited significances in the enterprises capability of interpreting and actioning IT solutions effectively to deliver improvements in competitiveness, and derive both internal and external synergy (collaboration), respectively. The research conducted then takes a new path, discovering a new 'middle ground' between reductionist and holistic approaches. For example, Chia (1998) proposes that IT research has tended to focus on the consequences of IT with models based on attempts to algorithmically compress the elements of an enterprise, implying modelling is a reductionist approach. This research discovers new areas of adaptation behaviours and the associated the need to balance the polarisation of views between internal communities of enterprises it also suggests optimum adaptation conditions for both fulfilment and project driven cultures. The research study concludes with implications and suggestions for new approaches and tools to assist IT researchers and consultancy organisations.

Abstract:
Integration platforms such as Zapier and IFTTT allow users to create custom flows that link events taking place in one application to an action that should occur in another. With the help of these platforms, people are able to automate work that would have otherwise required manual input. Thanks to this, the mundane tasks of everyday life can be delegated to computers while people are allowed to be more productive with their time. The question is, how exactly does Zapier and IFTTT implement these integration solutions, and how do they compare? From the perspective of a company that seeks to publish their application to the catalogues of these platforms, one would be interested in knowing what specific problems these platforms can solve, how they are solved, and how the solution can be evaluated. One theoretical framework that can be applied in order to answer all of these questions is known as enterprise integration. The problem is that an analysis of Zapier and IFTTT through the context of enterprise integration does not exist. The purpose of this thesis was to create this analysis. By doing so, companies would be able to make more informed decisions as to the selection and use of these technologies. Action research methodology was used to gather qualitative, inductive data, through the implementation of five smaller scale projects. Each of the projects was an investigation into a common type of problem that enterprise integration is typically used to solve. For each project, a set of criteria that were also taken from enterprise integration were used in order to evaluate the implementation’s strengths and weaknesses. A statement as to which of these platforms is better than the other was not found. However, similarities and differences between the two were able to be determined. The results indicated that Zapier’s strengths came mostly from the fact that it offers developers more freedom than IFTTT does, but that IFTTT had strengths that came from its ability to offer reliable delivery without compromise, and that it allowed developers to create better solutions in multiple scenarios. Findings like these were found and expressed through enterprise integration.

B2B eBusiness model is viewed as one of the most promising business strategies in 21st century. The essence of B2B eBusiness is enterprise integration which is in turn dependent on the integration of business processes, application systems and information among enterprises. The development of a flexible and dynamic framework for enterprise application integration to enhance enterprise integration has therefore become one of the most important tasks in industry. Due to the complicated relationships and heavy interactions with partners, the B2B eBusiness model will bring conglomerate enterprises opportunities as well as challenges in developing an enterprise application integration framework. The objective of this research is to design an enterprise application integration framework to facilitate the integration of a conglomerate enterprise and thus realize its B2B eBusiness operations. To achieve the objective, the focus of this research is three-fold: 1) design of a B2B business model for conglomerate enterprises through analyzing its organizational structure and inter and intra-enterprise interactions, 2) design of a functional framework for enterprise application integration based on the proposed B2B business model, and 3) design of an architecture of a service-based enterprise integration platform based on the proposed framework using web-service technology. This research provides the blueprint of conglomerate enterprises’ information integration architecture that can help achieve the dynamic enterprise alliance and obtain closer enterprise partnership so as to promote business effectiveness of conglomerate enterprise and its entire supply chain.

The rapid development of information technology and network brings a revolutionary impact on industries, and the key competitive advantage of today''s business is determined by its capability in accessing the real time information across systems and organizational boundaries. In order to provide valid real time supply and demand information to the members comprised in a supply chain, the integration of information intra- and inter-enterprise is extremely important. From an enterprise''s point of view, system integration not only considers the data exchanges among disparate application systems, but also need to concern the consistence between process and system. However, a common situation, such as the inconsistency of data models for different application systems, makes the integration even more difficult. The objective of this research is to propose a system integration method based on process-analysis and data level design patterns which through process-oriented data modeling. The methodology is first to identify business process components from business operation process analysis and analyze the logic of application systems to construct a system integration process. Then the business object model (BOM) and its metadata, which is the kernel of system integration approach proposed in this study, are constructed. At the system implementation phase, the business object models are first mapped to identify the data inconsistency, and then the data needs to be integrated and queried and transfer using the migration tool or application interface. The resulting quarried data will be helpful in providing system engineers to easily manage the data transferring strategy in the data integration process.
