Abstract:
In order to remain competitive, the integration of their information systems is an imperative for many large organisations. Applications that originally have been developed independently are now required to interoperate to support new or different functions of the enterprise. Although the mechanisms for application interoperation exist provided by the technology, due to the sheer number and complexity of the running systems, integration solutions centralised or distributedappropriate at the local level do not translate successfully to the whole enterprise. Centralised integration approaches often satisfy only some of the integration requirements, they are very expensive, and are fraught with danger since they imply an all or nothing approach. Distributed approaches, on the other hand, suffer from complexity and scalability problems as the number of system interfaces to be implemented and the number of execution-time invocations grows with the number of component applications. This dissertation makes a contribution to the field of Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) within the framework of distributed systems technology. Based on real-life case studies experience, we present here a federated approach that controls the size and complexity of the integration effort by reusing existing systems as much as possible and reducing the number of interacting applications. Only selected local elements are exposed to the organisational milieu, and a consistent supporting infrastructure is provided to make systems interactions possible. Our approach provides a flexible and scalable strategy to enterprise integration, avoiding the shortcomings of traditional approaches. We respect existing organisational structures, and demonstrate how appropriate federation infrastructure and protocols enable the interoperation of existing systems. The three main facets of enterprise knowledge are systematically incorporated into the integration effort: a) by the use of domain ontologies to support data integration; b) by the development of a methodology to include business rules; and c) by the development of FEW, a federated workflow model to implement the business processes of the organisation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
With the widespread use of the Internet and its associated technologies, enterprises have to evolve in the way they are conducting business. 'e-business applications' refer to a new class of distributed applications that involves the Internet as a communication platform. Each e-business application supports the full automation of business processes that can span across multiple enterprises. For a given application domain that involves e-business application development, a number of design decisions that best fullfil stakeholders requirements have to be made. One important issue is the reuse of functionality which exists within legacy systems that can belong to one or more enterprises within the same domain. Most existing design approaches are inadequate in supporting the exploration of all design combinations. Moreover, there is little work on how to identify the best design decisions systematically for a given application domain. In this thesis we present a pattern-based approach that addresses the architectural design of e-business applications. We identify a number of architectural patterns whose instantiation on a given design problem correspond to different architectural design alternatives. We also identify models that enable the estimation of quality attributes for such alternatives. Then we investigate and utilise methods to select the best pattern for a given design problem. We also describe the process of generating the alternative architectures, estimating their qualities, and then ranking them with respect to any quality attribute or a combination of quality attributes. We validate this approach on a real life case study in the area of capital markets. The case study concerns realistic e-business applications that rely on existing legacy applications. The validation exercise has produced predictions which have been compared with actual design decisions that have been made. The thesis also proposes a framework for the systematic identification of architectural patterns. An additional set of architectural patterns and their impact on the case study are discussed. The main contribution of this thesis is in the identification of patterns and quality attributes models for the architectural design of e-business applications that aid in the systematic selection of the most appropriate architectural pattern for a given problem context.

Tullgren, Melike, and Viktoria Uyanik. "B2B Application Integration : Why companies choose or not choose to implement B2BAI." Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, Business Informatics, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-431.

Full text
Abstract:

The global business environment of today requires companies to be flexible, in order to quickly react and respond to the ever-changing market. Business-to-business application integration (B2BAI) can be seen as a tool which enables companies to stay competitive and it is often regarded by the theory as a must for survival in today’s fierce business environment. Eventhough the employment of a B2BAI strategy can generate a lot of advantages and opportunities for companies operating within today’s global business environment, there are still many challenges and problems to overcome in order to have a successful B2BAI solution.

Based on this we found it highly interesting to see whether the theories positive outlook on B2BAI could be supported by an empirical research. In this essay we have therefore studied and identified the underlying reasons and the contributing factors to why or why not companies choose to integrate externally, from the perspective of IT-consulting agencies. Besides this, a description and an explanation regarding the concepts covered by the field of B2BAI have been made in order to facilitate the understanding for the reader. As our intention primarily was to investigate the reasons behind and the contributing factors to why or why not companies choose to integrate, we chose to make qualitative interviews. This, as we were in need of information which described the course of events and expressed individual opinions, in order to achieve the purpose of the essay. Regarding the selection of research objects for the research, the population consists of all IT-consulting agencies in Sweden. The research has however been delimited to a selection of the population, where the sample consists of three IT-consulting agencies located in Jönköping, with experience of B2BAI.

One of the most interesting discoveries we have made in this research is that the empirical findings agree with the theory in regards of that globalization is a central factor contributing to why companies chose to invest in B2BAI. However, the respondents do not discuss all the advantages of B2BAI mentioned in the theory and emphasize slightly different underlying reasons for choosing to employ a B2BAI strategy. The most central reason for not choosing to employ a B2BAI strategy was according to the respondents due to the lack of knowledge regarding issues relating to the phenomenon and this have not been discussed in the theoretical framework. The challenges with B2BAI stated in the theory, were on the other hand not regarded as issues contributing to not choosing to implement B2BAI. We are under the impression that the advantages and the oppor-tunities with B2BAI carry more weight then the challenges, as the essays empirical findings indicate that the demand for B2BAI today is high and constantly growing.

Abstract:
Today, with various technology and business standards, organizations face rapid changes in both internal and external environments. To be able to rapidly respond to such changing environments, integration of software systems has entered among the top priorities of many organizations. However, despite extended use of software integration, methods for estimating the business value of implementing such integration are still missing. Besides presenting a conceptual model to define the benefits of systems integration and related causal relationships, this study proposes a method for measuring such benefits in monetary terms. In particular, we  demonstrate how a mathematical programming technique called Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) can be used to evaluate the business value of software integration. Our method is illustrated using data from 12 organizations. The results indicate significant productivity gains by integrating software systems, which represent the value of software integration in organizations.

Abstract:
In addition to storing 70-75% of their data and business logic in legacy mainframe systems, global corporations have countless custom applications and off-the-shelf ERP products residing within their networks. Increasing competition and shrinking budgets have left managers scouring for innovative, cost-effective methods to maximize the potential of these enormous sunk costs. There is, as a result, an overwhelming need to not only web enable these existing legacy assets in order to quickly and cost-effectively deliver data to both customers and business partners alike, but also to amalgamate these disparate systems into a unified, homogeneous, real-time enterprise. Integration efforts to date, focused predominantly on the development of proprietary point-to-point adapters, have unfortunately proven to be a daunting task with countless failed projects and losses in the millions. The advent of XML web services does, however, have the potential to revolutionize existing integration strategies; the cost savings and ease of implementation associated with wrapping virtually all systems, past, present and future, with standardized, code-independent, data-centric interfaces is truly astounding. As the future success of this platform is, however, strictly dependent upon the interoperability of its endpoints, we have proposed several fundamental amendments to the existing flawed WSDL specification. A generic reference architecture, leveraging both this improved web services model as well as established component middleware technologies, is then proposed for the web enablement of legacy assets on an enterprise scale. In order to ensure the adoption of this methodology, a toolkit designed to automate the transformation has also been devised. This new paradigm will not only allow information to flow freely from deep within the enterprise, but will ultimately serve as the cornerstone of a new generation of enterprise integration solutions.

Abstract:
Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) concerns connecting systems together to meet demands that could not be met by either system individually, or to establish new channels for communication within and between enterprises. As the systems and their underlying technologies have become more advanced, the task of integrating them has become a more complicated one. By making a case study bound to an integration project at an enterprise, this study aims to identify pitfalls that could constitute risks for such projects. The main goal is for the analysis of these pitfalls to guide developers to avoid the pitfalls in their own projects. Several pitfalls were identified by analyzing documentation and reflecting on the course of the project. The pitfall that had the greatest impact during the project was unclear requirements. The pitfalls are analyzed with emphasis on circumstances under which they were discovered and contributing factors are reasoned about. For the pitfalls that were actual challenges for the case study, analysis also covers how they were avoided, while potential solutions are discussed for the remainder.

Abstract:
Over the decades, as organizations begin to move globally there has been a sporadic flow of information in their supply chain. Competition today is forcing companies to integrate tightly with their suppliers and customers, in order to reduce the time available to flex the supply chain (SC) (Koh S.C, Saad S, Arunachalam S, 2006). The integration of firms and departments and information is getting more and more complicated. Regardless of enterprise system solutions being introduced as “integrated suites” they have failed to accomplish application and supply chain integration (Themistocleous, M. Irani, Z. O‟Keefe, and R. 2001). Therefore, this thesis aims to explore, gain better understanding and to explain the balance that may occur between the challenges and benefits gained from integrating enterprise resource planning and supply chain management. Our topic of interest could be view from both developers and user perspective. Developer/consultant‟s perspective is based on the viewpoint of those involved in and responsible for developing enterprise solutions. User‟s perspective, this perspective gives insight to how the integration process is perceived by organisations actually using the solutions. We chose the User perspective because we consider the user to be the direct beneficiary of whatever outcome is gotten from both the business solutions and its integration. In order to achieve a purposeful thesis. We decided to use an interpretive perspective which focus on exploring and gaining insight into issues of integrating enterprise system solution. We used both the inductive and the deductive approaches in our research. This would be advantageous due to the nature of our research topic, as there is little existing knowledge about the integration of enterprise systems solution within supply chain and there are lots of literatures related to the enterprise system solutions (ERP and SCM) been observed. The inductive approach would guide us to choose one or a few specific interactions to explore in-depth, while the deductive approach would aid us when making an hypothesis, since we would be collecting ideas about previous research and theories in order to guide us and make comparison.Conclusively, we found that the balance between challenges and benefits of ERP and SCM are unequivocal, as the benefits surpass the challenges and the effect of challenges on organisation‟s benefit is that it prolongs the short term benefit.

Abstract:
Consumer technology adoption into large enterprise environments is occurring at an unprecedented rate. Employees require the flexibility and efficiency of using operating systems, computers, and mobility products they are familiar with and that enable their productivity. Due to this industry phenomenon, one large shipping enterprise must work to create solutions to integrate Apple’s OS X operating system into its traditional Windows-based operating environment. This level of integration must take place carefully to enable usability and foster the continued data security of enterprise assets. This paper describes the steps and methodology taken, as well as the rationale used, to accomplish the task of integrating Apple’s FileVault 2 full disk encryption technology into existing McAfee management infrastructure and traditional deployment and support workflows. Using a combination of industry and community solutions and techniques, a low-cost software solution named EscrowToEPO is created to facilitate the secure and user-friendly adoption of FileVault 2 as a full disk encryption solution. This paper also includes the success/failure rate of adoption and implications as to how the adoption of similar solutions can occur to support future operating systems or other environments.

Abstract:
Growing enterprises have growing amounts of information. Making sure that this information is easily accessible to its employees is not an easy task. For this task Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems come in handy. However, the ERP systems contain lots of information and may be too complex to handle this information or may be too slow in sharing this information within the organisation. This thesis introduces a new solution for how mobile applications can connect to an ERP system by exploiting database synchronisation, which allows the employees to get the information wherever they are without the need to directly access the ERP system. There are three important questions in this thesis: how the ERP works, how to build a mobile application and, how to build a back end? By combining answers to these questions a whole system is built which is production ready and can copy data between the ERP system and the back end and show the information in a mobile application. The overarching goals were to build a system that could extract data from the ERP system into a proprietary back end and a mobile application that could synchronise with the back end. However, synchronisation between the mobile application and the back end was not implemented due to lack of time. The back end had to be able to scale up to 500 concurrent users and respond within 3 seconds, both of these goals were achieved. The mobile application that was built to display the information to the end user was built with usability in mind, since Netlight wanted a straightforward application that anyone could use. The mobile application was shown to have good usability. The results of this thesis project show that building systems around ERPs, instead of inside them, gives these systems the ability to scale, improved the implementation time, and reduced the company’s maintenance efforts.

The software testing team at Scania use a manual and time consuming process to restore a test vehicle after working with it. Several different applications are used in this process to ensure the vehicle is in the same state as it was before their testing. To improve the workflow with a reduced workload and a more robust process, the test team was interested in the development of a restoration application. It was desired to develop the restoration application by reusing the components to the greatest possible extend. Since there were many components that fulfilled the needs of most functions, a pre-study of all the applications was done to decide which components can be re-used. This was study was based on the integration model, Enterprise Application Integration, which aims to create a single product combining the applications used in an organization to simplify processes such as maintenance, data management and employee training. A prototype was developed which implements three existing modules on different levels and, in line with the goals of EAI, is itself a simple application that enables the components to work in unision

Abstract:
In data intensive applications deployed in enterprise networks, especially applications utilizing peer-to-peer technology, locality is of high importance. Peers should aim to maximize data exchange with other peers where the connectivity is the best. In order to achieve this, locality information must be present which peers can base their decisions on. This information is not trivial to find as there is no readily available global knowledge of which nodes have good connectivity. Having each peer try other peers randomly until it finds good enough partners is costly and lowers the locality of the application until it converges. In this thesis a solution is presented which creates a logical topology of a peer-to-peer network, grouping peers into clusters based on their connectivity metrics. This can then be used to aid the peer-to-peer partner selection algorithm to allow for intelligent partner selection. A graph model of the system is created, where peers in the system are modelled as vertices and connections between peers are modelled as edges, with a weight in relation to the quality of the connection. The problem is then modelled as a weighted graph clustering problem which is a well-researched problem with a lot of published work tied to it. State-of-the-art graph community detection algorithms are researched, selected depending on factors such as performance and scalability, optimized for the current purpose and implemented. The results of running the algorithms on the streaming data are evaluated against known information. The results show that unsupervised graph community detection algorithm creates useful insights into networks connectivity structure and can be used in peer-to-peer contexts to find the best partners to exchange data with.

There are two approaches for the information systems integration: ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) which is well-known, and EAI (Enterprise Application Integration). The ERP integration is not totally satisfactory as it has failed in supplying all functional areas, providing space to be filled by specialized softwares or legacy systems, mainly in market verticals where ERP could not meet. By the integration with the several types of business applications – EAI – it is possible to reach an integration or interrelationship of the business processes and/or structures; therefore, it is as strategic as operational since it affects the organizational results, providing the organizations business competitiveness and sustainability. However, the EAI’s difficulties lie in choosing/selecting the existing technologies in the acquisition process, turning the decision-making of technologies or EAI solutions acquisition a hard and complex task due to the criteria not only quantitative but also qualitative. The purpose of this research is to define criteria for EAI technologies selection. The method of research consists of literature revision to map the criteria used in softwares selection, mainly the EAI and ERP, and analysis of ISO/IEC 25010:2011 standard content on the software quality criteria and Guia de Aquisições do Modelo de Referência para Melhoria de Processo do Software Brasileiro (MPS-BR) based on ISO/IEC 12207:2008 International Standard, which describes the acquisition process of software and associated services. This study has presented as contribution, aside from the significant amount of the identified criteria in the literature and their possibility of being used in software acquisition process, a set of criteria derived from scientific and technical literature, categorized in three levels, enabling EAI’s professionals to act proactively from the choice of EAI solution.

Okat, Caglar. "Using Semantic Web Services For Data Integration In Banking Domain." Master's thesis, METU, 2010. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12611782/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
A semantic model oriented transformation mechanism is developed for the centralization of intra-enterprise data integration. Such a mechanism is especially crucial in the banking domain which is selected in this study. A new domain ontology is constructed to provide basis for annotations. A bottom-up approach is preferred for semantic annotations to utilize existing web service definitions. Transformations between syntactic web service XML responses and semantic model concepts are defined in transformation files. Transformation files are stored and executed in a separate central transformation repository to enhance abstraction and reusability. An RDF-Store is implemented to store transformed RDF data. Inference power of semantic model is exposed by executing semantic queries in the RDF-Store.

Abstract:
Context. Application Lifecycle Management refers to the coordination of all aspects of software engineering, through a collection of integrated software development tools. More and more organizations are heavily relying on the ALM tools nowadays. Objectives. In this study we research ALM first as a business strategy, its roots, its advantages and disadvantages. As well as making a theoretical research, we seek out the setbacks of the practical side of ALM in order to find the areas needed for improvement, by investigating the ALM’s existing tools, interviewing ALM’s users, and using gained statistical data to derive practical facts about ALM. The goal of the thesis is to find out how ALM can be improved. Methods. The vast amount of sources, including articles, books, and journals is used to support our arguments and conclusions. A long online survey was carried with many participants to understand the practical side of ALM, as well as gain access to information about ALM’s setbacks. Results. The problems of ALM are recognized and named. Proposals are made in respect of how to deal with these problems. A list of what options need to be studied in the future, in order to improve the overall ALM design, and make it a powerful tool, is presented. A detailed plan for further research regarding this highly important issue is presented. Conclusions. We conclude that there are several ALM tool options on the market, all having their strengths and weaknesses. But in order for ALM to become an industrial solution and to be truly successful and effective in supporting the broader goals of the different organizations using it, the requests of the stakeholders towards deeper semantic integration between the various tool involved in the ALM processes need to be embodied in the current ALM offerings. We conclude that further research is needed in order to assess the proposals, and test the design ideas that are presented in the last chapter of this thesis.
This thesis concerns the authors and stakeholders of ALM. With the technological achievements taking place every day, and competition being very high, it is important to get the software product ready for release on time and of good quality. The current tools for managing of the application’s lifecycle are incoherent in terms of tool integration. In this thesis we describe the setbacks of ALM, according to interviewed stakeholders and authors of journals, articles and books. We conclude our thesis with the several proposed design options that may succeed in making ALM strong and consistent in the future. The proposed design mainly concerns the integration problems, and provides several potential solutions, aiming at easy to use and integrate tools. Further research areas are explained, and stated.

Abstract:
Memory design is a crucial component of VLSI system design from area, power and performance perspectives. To meet the increasingly challenging system specifications, architecture, circuit and device level innovations are required for existing memory technologies. Emerging memory solutions are widely explored to cater to strict budgets. This thesis presents design methodologies for custom memory design with the objective of power-performance benefits across specific applications. Taking example of STTRAM (spin transfer torque random access memory) as an emerging memory candidate, the design space is explored to find optimal energy design solution. A thorough thermal reliability study is performed to estimate detection reliability challenges and circuit solutions are proposed to ensure reliable operation. Adoption of the application-specific optimal energy solution is shown to yield considerable energy benefits in a read-heavy application called MBC (memory based computing). Circuit level customizations are studied for the volatile SRAM (static random access memory) memory, which will provide improved energy-delay product (EDP) for the same MBC application. Memory design has to be aware of upcoming challenges from not only the application nature but also from the packaging front. Taking 3D die-folding as an example, SRAM performance shift under die-folding is illustrated. Overall the thesis demonstrates how knowledge of the system and packaging can help in achieving power efficient and high performance memory design.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the architectural implications of adopting serialisation and remote procedure call (RPC) frameworks, NoSQL/hybrid data stores and heterogeneous computing in financial information systems. Each tech- nology and its implications is analysed separately together with its benefits and drawbacks for the system implemen- tor. The investigation shows that all three technologies can help alleviate technical challenges facing financial enter- prises; but they all come at a cost of complexity.

Abstract:
This thesis was requested by Solution Xperts in Linköping and is an evaluation of the software BizTalk360, which is a add-on to the very well known application integration software BizTalk Server. One problem that many face with BizTalk Server is how to handle the post-implementation operations of their implementation. Referring to such factors as monitoring and security for instance. The built-in tools are very limited and lack a variety of functions that are very desirable. BizTalk360 tries to solve this. In order to evaluate the value that BizTalk360 brings to its users, two factors were taken into account. How important are the functions provided for the company? And how difficult would these be to implement independently?. After testing the BizTalk360 core functions and features and also implementing a representative function of BizTalk360, everything learnt were presented to group of experienced BizTalk Sever developers in order to receive estimates regarding their individual importance and theoretical implementation time. The importance of the functions proved quite minor. The platform offers a lot of smart solutions to various problems but these wont see enough use to justify the cost. The difficulty of implementing a similar platform were also estimated to be quite low, only time consuming. Estimated to take (through average) 653 man hours.

Grieshaber, Michele Marie. "A computer-aided software engineering toolkit for the integration of CAD/CAM application software in a network environment." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/37875.

Full text
Abstract:
Much progress has been made in recent years in the development of Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) tools for engineering design, analysis, and manufacturing. Unfortunately, most of these CAD/CAM applications were constructed independently and without standardization. In essence, they automate a single aspect of design, analysis, or manufacturing and cannot be combined to form a cohesive environment, since integration among applications was not addressed during the design phase of CAD/CAM application software creation. In view of this problem, a novel approach is suggested for software integration of applications in a network environment. The distributed integration solution described in this dissertation employs a new "integration client/server" relationship, where the integration server is the core of the system, providing functions to translate or transform data between applications. The integration client consists of an interface with the server, a CAD/CAM application, and a user interface with the integrated system called the GRIM (GRaphical Interface Manager). There is only one integration server in the system, but there may be an unlimited number of clients. The solution created for distributed integration is implemented in a Computer-Aided Software Engineering (CASE) workbench, geared specifically toward the generation of integration systems. This workbench is known as the CAD/CAM CASE Workbench, and includes an integration solution as well as standard CASE tools. The integration solution contains several tools which will aid a system designer in generating integration systems for CAD/CAM applications. Included is the distributed integration solution described in this dissertation. The distributed integration solution is designed to facilitate the semi-automatic generation of an integration system. It consists of an integration server at the center of the integration system which manages the exchange of data among the integration clients. The integration clients are the CAD/CAM applications in the context of the integration system. To use the distributed integration solution, the integration system designer will customize portions of the structure charts, data dictionary, and module specifications contained in the workbench according to the needs of the applications programs and generate C-source code defining the integration system. Using the distributed integration solution, the user will be able to effect data requests for applications, using the GRIM to interact with the system. All data exchanges are request driven. In addition to the distributed integration solution, this research includes a prototype integrated system which allows data to be requested from one application, and translated to a second for display and manipulation. The prototype was tested in a distributed environment and the results are described.

Abstract:
This study addressed issues associated with implementing multiple data integrators. The process included implementing the same data integrator multiple times or implementing multiple different data integrators. It was shown that single data integrators implementations were failing at high rates. Environments were complicated because there were more acquisitions and mergers now than in the past, companies were required to be competitive while implementations were taking place, and possibly had short implementation time frames. The main goal of this study was to develop an agile, sturdy, and rigorous model that addressed the needs of companies that found themselves in situations where they needed to implement two or more data integrators and possibly business initiatives. This researcher developed a model and a questionnaire. The questionnaire was used to gather data from managers and practitioners in the information technology industry. The collected information was expected to show a consensus about the proposed JBurns Systems Implementation Model (JBSIM). Analysis showed various industry participants used different combinations of the proposed data integrators supported and they supported the proposed JBSIM. This model allowed for successful implementation of multiple data integrators used in this research. As this model matured, it had the potential that allowed the use of other data integrators not used in this research. It had potential that allowed corporate initiatives to be used.

Full text
Abstract:
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are used to integrate all functions of an enterprise. They often evolve from a smaller monolithic object-oriented application, covering one functional area and organically grow over time in features and size until all functional areas are covered. Once they reach certain size, unrestricted dependencies among numerous classes increase complexity of the system and make it harder for development team to create new features and maintain code stability. This creates problems to further evolution of the ERP system and poses a risk to economic consequences for company developing it. ERP refactoring strategy, together with process of its creation, is presented in this thesis. It can be used with ERP systems, having architectural issues, with a purpose to improve quality of system’s architecture and thus prolong its lifecycle. The goal of modularizing monolithic system it pursued with intention to reduce complexity and make it easier to reason about the system. This architecture-level refactoring strategy is created for one specific medium-sized ERP system through iterative trial-and-error explorative approach. This thesis is carried out at the main development site for this ERP system by project team consisting of employees working on its development. The result shows the RefStratERP, an innovative refactoring strategy consisting of target architecture, refactoring process to reach it, refactoring principles and refactoring limitations. Contrary to initial expectation, arranging domain modules (modules containing business logic) in directed acyclic graph (DAG) is, in general, not feasible without sacrificing internal module cohesion of business logic. Accidental unidirectional dependency between two domain modules is at risk of becoming bidirectional under changing business requirements. On the other hand, non-domain modules (modules without business logic) could be completely separated from domain modules in a way that domain modules depend on non-domain modules. This comes from underlying nature of business domain and the fact that functional areas of an enterprise are interdependent.

Abstract:

Nowadays, more and more companies use Enterprise Models to integrate and coordinate their business processes with the aim of remaining competitive on the market. Consequently, Enterprise Models play a critical role in this integration enabling to improve the objectives of the enterprise, and ways to reach them in a given period of time. Through Enterprise Models, companies are able to improve the management of their operations, actors, processes and also to improve communication within the organisation.

This thesis describes another use of Enterprise Models. In this work, we intend to apply Enterprise Models as interface for information searching. The underlying needsfor this project lay in the fact that we would like to show that Enterprise Models canbe more than just models but it can be used in a more dynamic way which is through a software program for information searching. The software program aimed at, first, extracting the information contained in the Enterprise Models (which are stored into aXML file on the system). Once the information is extracted, it is used to express a query which will be sent into a search engine to retrieve some relevant document to the query and return them to the user.

The thesis was carried out over an entire academic semester. The results of this workare a report which summarizes all the knowledge gained into the field of the study. A software has been built to serve as a proof of testing the theories.

Abstract:

The Small and Medium-size Enterprises are the key bone of the economy of many nations. The usual definition of SME’s, make up 99.8% of the approximately 19 million enterprises of the European Union (ISO, 2002) and Sweden is not an exception. That is why SME’s faces the strategic challenge of achieving sustained profitable growth. To meet this challenge, SME’s must develop capabilities to integrate their systems. Since ICT gives so many advantages to support the Supply Chain, and MRPII software’s have become a very popular tool in the last thirty years; Our purpose is to answer the following research question:

How can MRP II-type computer systems be used effectively to support the manufacturing and organizational integration?

The research started with on-site observations and interviews but the development of a model and a survey was needed. After, we linked the research with an already accepted model. The results show how important the human aspect and the accuracy are in the effective usage of an MRP II. It also demonstrates that the MRP II philosophy must be accepted to use the MRP II software profitably. Nevertheless, we modeled the vicious cycle that our case company might deal with, tried to find the root cause and give recommendations to break it.

"A reference architecture for archival systems with application to product models." Phd thesis, Université de Bourgogne, 2013. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00924492.

Abstract:
Nowadays, a major part of the information is in digital form. Digital preservation is essential to allowpeople to access information over time. From a computer science perspective, two major objectiveshave to be met to enable digital preservation: developing archival systems to manage the preserveddigital information, and select information representations that will facilitate the preservation. For complexinformation such as product models, these two objective are particularly hard to meet. Archivalsystems have to operate in a complex environment, interact with many different systems, and supportmay different business functions. Product model representations do not use all the possibilitiesof computer interpretation.Regarding the development of archival systems, the key is to determine what has to be described toprove that the archival system can effectively support the digital preservation. The Reference Modelfor an Open Archival Information System (OAIS) proposes a terminology to describe and comparearchives. The Audit and Certification of Trustworthy Digital Repository (ACTDR) provides criteria forthe certification of archives. One issue with these efforts is that there is not guidance on how to usethem within archival system descriptions. This thesis proposes a method called Reference Architecture for Archival Systems (RAAS) to describearchival systems implementations. RAAS relies on the DoD Architecture Framework to describethe various aspects of the archival systems. Moreover, RAAS provides an archival-specificterminology inspired by the OAIS Reference Model. RAAS also explains how the archival systemdescription can help for the ACTDR certification.RAAS is applied to a product model preservation case, to describe the various aspects of the archivalsystem. This description includes the interactions involving the archival systems, the archival systemfunctions, the definition of the preserved content, and the definition of the metadata. This descriptionformally refers to the OAIS terminology, and provides ACTDR certification evidence. This thesis also address the representation of product models by proposing the translation of productmodels from STEP to OWL. STEP is a standard for product model representation. The use ofOWL enables semantic relationship to enrich product information, and improve the search and theunderstanding of this information using data integration. The methodology used in this thesis can apply to other types of information, such as medical records

Abstract:
In a context where environmental issues are increasingly taken into account, the chemical related industry faces situations imposing a chemical product substitution. Computer aided molecular design methods, which consist in finding molecules satisfying a set of constraints, are well adapted to these situations. Using a systemic analysis of the needs and uses linked to this context, we develop a computer aided product design tool implementing a genetic algorithm. It is able to explore a wider solution space thanks to a flexible molecular framework. Besides, by allowing a very flexible setting of the problem to be solved, it enables the search of molecules sourced from renewable resources. Based on concepts from system and enterprise engineering, we formalize a decision making process dedicated to the product substitution in an industrial context. This multi-criteria decision process includes the phases of the requirements definition, of the generation of alternative solutions, of the selection of the best alternative and of the product application. It uses a model driven approach and decision making techniques that guaranty an operational alignment in addition to the strategic alignment across the chemical enterprise. Through a case study, we expose how the combination of our computer aided product design tool and our decision making process enables an environmentally compliant approach of product substitution which is both efficient and in adequacy with enterprise context

Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) is an integration framework that encapsulates a set of services and technologies that forms a middle tier to enable integration of varied systems and applications across the enterprise. It is a mechanism to combine processes, software, standards, and hardware to seamlessly integrate two or more enterprise application systems allowing them to operate as a unit. There are various challenges with EAI in terms of the approach, the architecture, implementation and its operation in a business environment. Even more so in a Third-party logistics (3PL) environment, where its function is directly associated with the performance of the business. Third Party Logistic is a supply chain service provider that carries out supply chain activities on behalf of a client, also known as a shipper, for part, or all of their supply chain management. However, regardless of the value put on the 3PL, IT capabilities shippers are still not satisfied with the performance, and there are no specific guidelines for EAI usage in 3PL environment. The goal of this study was to design an Enterprise Application Integration framework for Third-Party logistics.

Data and the use thereof, is considered to be a source of competitive advantage for organisations. In order to achieve this it needs to be managed appropriately, and existing literature considers enterprise information management (EIM) to be the foundation for organisations to manage information successfully. (For the purposes of this dissertation, data and information will be treated as analogous concepts.) Key contributing factors to the success of EIM have been identified as ensuring data governance is in place, and that there is a focus on data quality. Within EIM, a key set of data that must be managed effectively is customer data. In many organisations – including the financial services organisation that is the focus of this study – customer data is held in disparate systems across the organisation. Creating a single view of how customers interact with an organisation is deemed of crucial importance for future organisational growth, and the initiatives that organisations undertake to create this view is referred to in the literature as customer data integration (CDI). In order for CDI to be successful, master data management (MDM) needs to be addressed; this will ensure that core data is managed consistently across the disparate systems. This study sought to determine how the concepts of EIM, CDI and MDM were being applied in the organisation under review, and how closely this application matched the recommendations of the literature. In addition, the study sought to uncover additional factors that had an impact on customer data integration, and information management in general, in the organisation. What was found is that in the organisation in question, how information management is being addressed is consistent with the literature in some areas – primarily the importance of a single view of customer and the supporting roles of information governance and data quality – but divergent in others, the key area being that there is no EIM strategy in the organisation that drives a consolidated approach to information management. Organisational culture was also highlighted by the literature as being a critical influencer on how information is managed, and this was supported by the findings. Additional factors that were found to have a significant influence on data management – which were not highlighted by the literature – included the importance of processes, and especially for CDI the critical role played by legislation, in particular the Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA). An additional crucial factor, again not highlighted by the literature, is the difficulty organisations have in placing an actual financial value on the use of information. Although intrinsically it is understood that information is valuable, the difficulty in ascribing an explicit value to it is a key inhibitor (in conjunction with organisational culture), to the organisation initiating data management projects at a strategic level, and instead having to address data management as a component of projects driven by individual business units.

To gain efficiency and strengthen quality control, manufacturers implement various information systems depending on needs and requirements. Often times, Microsoft Office is also adopted for establishing simplified computing models or databases. Regardless of how information is recorded or collected, data after statistical analysis and restructure can be meaningful and helpful to enterprises. Therefore, how to collect decentralized data and integrate them into meaningful information is both challenging and important. The studied case in this research is a medium size enterprise that produces silicon wafers with a large number of specifications. The company currently uses Enterprise Resource Planning and Manufacturing Execution Systems software to access and control their data. Besides, excel application is also the common way to process and keep data within the company. Therefore, as different platforms of software are used, valuable data are also scattered and cannot be crossed referenced. Meaningful information becomes difficult to obtain. Crucial business decision making moments are often missed as a consequence and often times, wrong strategic directions are made due to lack of timely and correct information. Production management plays a critical role in keeping production processes working smoothly and efficiently. This department not only has to interact with a wide range of different departments, it also needs to resolve issues and conquer problems on a daily basis. When production managers need to draw information from current database, numbers from one platform normally are not enough nor complete. Even with the help of Information Technology department, most likely, the data IT provides are outdated or not in use. Therefore this study attempts to forecast decision making moments during business process and formulate reports that will assist managers to make better decisions. Since these reports need to collect data from various platforms, Enterprise Application Integration solution is expected to apply. The final goal of this study is to establish a decision making support system to help production management make timely and accurate decisions.

Application of information technology was introduced to the banking industry at an early stage. In the past, since development of information system focused on product and operation automation, the system framework was uncomplicated. As technology advances and businesses are becoming more and more competitive, banks are facing new challenges. The banking industry is gradually crossing the industry boundaries and making adjustments in order to face future trends and strategies. The survival of the banking industry relies on the customer-oriented value chain innovation and how to strengthen its basic operations by taking advantage of information technology. The purpose of this thesis is to address the issue of banking industry’s system integration and propose a framework for developing a bank’s “Construct Frond-end System Platforms and Enterprise Application Integration System Implement for Banks”. The framework contains 3 modules, i.e. “data”, “activity” and “process” that handle functions of data transforming, message dispatching and process modelling among the heterogeneous systems. Besides three cases of the local banks are cited to evidence the feasibility of this framework. Believe this framework could be submitted to the IT Developer of banking industry for reference when they consider to develop their own “Enterprise Application Integration” system.

With regards to extending component-based and service-oriented system development approaches and solving current problems related to enterprise systems, this study will explore the requirements and challenges of current enterprise systems, and define an SCSD (Service-oriented Component-based System Development) framework which would provide all-round service-oriented component-based support for a complex application environment. The purpose of this study is to create a novel SCSD framework which combines the features of both component-based and service-oriented paradigms, as well as avoid the weaknesses of the existing service and component combination approaches. The SCSD framework combines the re-usability of the component-based paradigm and the flexibility of the service-oriented paradigm. Reusable SCSD-based components and services can reduce costs, shorten development time, and improve service quality when implemented effectively. The SCSD framework offers an alternative to older system development approaches, while it also provides a new solution in order to establish relationships between services and components for current enterprise systems.

The Study of the Computer Simulation ApplicationIn the integration of Building SystemsResearcher: Tam, Yeu- WenInstructor: Chang, Tai-NongIn June, 1998ABSTRACT Building is an industry of creation, a creator can not wait until the completion of product, then choose the best among numerous products, or can not return and ask for replacement. It is therefore imperative to manufacture computer simulation trial performance and also the future tendency. Building is a 3D solid substance. Nonetheless, the building is merely transferred into 2D plan in the process of transmission and communication of architectural information to be interpreted and imagine 3D building from 2D plan. The type of method indeed arouses some paradoxes in theory. Utilize computer simulation application into building industry has become popular at present, there have been some successful paradigms overseas. On the contrary, the main function of most popular draw software in Taiwan have remained in 2D drawing, moreover, cause defective rate increase and hard to modify design changes as a result of lacking uniform format and level in operation and a need of repeatedly entering a lot of information. Not to mention utilizing computer simulation application into the integration of building systems in order to attain building effect in one, and overseas cases are only for reference not suitable for domestic environment. Due to the progress of computer techniques, it is easy for engineers to understand the actual result by using computer simulation. Proper application of the technique of computer simulation into information transmission in the process of building manufacture in the integration of building systems in order to attain building effect in one has become a goal for visualization and automation of domestic architectural design. The thesis of the research is divided into several points as below:1. Solve the problem of the integration of building systems of design stages. If apply computer simulation into the integration of building systems then solve the problem.2. Understand the development of PC''s software of computer simulation (technique and restraint of every kinds of software). Set the aim at understanding the restraint of integration kit and providing the direction of future development of applying computer software into the integration of building systems.3. Discuss computer simulation application at the present stage into the function and technique of the design stage of the integration of building systems, then provide the process and steps of applying computer software into the improvements of the integrated extent in building systems in the future stages.4. Discuss the virtues of the integration of building systems of 2D and 3D computer simulation. The purpose lies in analyzing differences of actual application of 2D and 3D computer simulation into the integration of building systems and supporting the disadvantages of adopting 3D computer simulation into the integration of building systems in the design stage from the viewpoint of construction.5. The dissertation is not inventing new technique, but combining the method of integrating traditional plan with the technique of contemporary 3D computer simulation in order to advance the discussion over the integrated extent in building systems.Key Words: Computer Simulation, Building System, the Integration of Building Systems

EAI(Enterprise Application Integration), an architecture seen in the 90's to address the information exchange and integrate among applications which developed at different times, with different needs, different technology and different specifications. It had played an indispensable role in the process of response to monetary policy innovation, changes in market demand, changes in consumer behavior. The concept of information integration did not begin in recent days, it is based on the Related management considerations that nothing more than the cost, efficiency and maintenance. However, the timing of the integration, consolidation and integration of the target and the way, which decision is the key to the success of integration. Compared to financial institutions for the development, it had correlations and a sense of distance with the technology development and application of EAI. EAI technology upgrade and the point of use is derived from the integration of the concept in change, and the integration of the concept in change is based on the needs of the environment. With the financial institutions continued to carry out the constitution to strengthen、strategic alliances and acquisitions、the re-organization, information integration will be greater and more diversified, and EAI in the use of the structure, will provide a look at different levels. This study that is based on the EAI platform import the concept of development and design with SOA(Service-Oriented Architecture),to build a more high-level integrated platform. Be directed against the cases in financial holding company as a research subject of integration.A view to be able to play a more active role in the integration in order to face current and future challenges.
