Abstract:

In the late 1970s, the Mexican ensemble Atrás del Cosmos, a pioneering free improvisation collective (1975–1983), held an eight-month residency at El Galeón, a city theater. Jazz and experimental theater were twin touchstones for the ensemble, which adapted ideas borrowed from Alejandro Jodorowsky, a Chilean expatriate known for his radical influence on the city’s 1960s theater scene, including the notion that theatrical performance should shatter social decorum and elicit liberating ways of being-in-the-world. For Atrás del Cosmos, art’s transformative potential also lay in articulating a personal voice in a collective context—a central tenet of jazz and African-American expressive culture. The ensemble’s multivalent genealogy, as well as its collaborations with US-based improvisers—notably trumpeter Don Cherry—bolster arguments for the transnational nature of twentieth-century “American” music. This chapter proposes Vijay Iyer’s notion of “embodied empathy” as a key to understanding the ensemble’s immediate social impact and its lasting historical significance.

Abstract:

Chapter 6 introduces quantum-mechanical ensemble theory by proving the asymptotic equivalence of the quantum-mechanical, microcanonical ensemble average with the quantum grand canonical ensemble average for many-particle systems, based on the method of Darwin and Fowler. The procedures involved identify the grand partition function, entropy and other statistical thermodynamic variables, including the grand potential, Helmholtz free energy, thermodynamic potential, Gibbs free energy, Enthalpy and their relations in accordance with the fundamental laws of thermodynamics. Accompanying saddle-point integrations define temperature (inverse thermal energy) and chemical potential (Fermi energy). The concomitant emergence of quantum statistical mechanics and Bose–Einstein and Fermi–Dirac distribution functions are discussed in detail (including Bose condensation). The magnetic moment is derived from the Helmholtz free energy and is expressed in terms of a one-particle retarded Green’s function with an imaginary time argument related to inverse thermal energy. This is employed in a discussion of diamagnetism and the de Haas-van Alphen effect.

Abstract:

This article considers non-Gaussian random matrices consisting of random variables with heavy-tailed probability distributions. In probability theory heavy tails of distributions describe rare but violent events which usually have a dominant influence on the statistics. Furthermore, they completely change the universal properties of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of random matrices. This article focuses on the universal macroscopic properties of Wigner matrices belonging to the Lévy basin of attraction, matrices representing stable free random variables, and a class of heavy-tailed matrices obtained by parametric deformations of standard ensembles. It first examines the properties of heavy-tailed symmetric matrices known as Wigner–Lévy matrices before discussing free random variables and free Lévy matrices as well as heavy-tailed deformations. In particular, it describes random matrix ensembles obtained from standard ensembles by a reweighting of the probability measure. It also analyses several matrix models belonging to heavy-tailed random matrices and presents methods for integrating them.

Abstract:

This article presents a list of algebraic, combinatorial, and analytic mechanisms that give rise to determinantal point processes. Determinantal point processes have been used in random matrix theory (RMT) since the early 1960s. As a separate class, determinantal processes were first used to model fermions in thermal equilibrium and the term ‘fermion’ point processes were adopted. The article first provides an overview of the generalities associated with determinantal point processes before discussing loop-free Markov chains, that is, the trajectories of the Markov chain do not pass through the same point twice almost surely. It then considers the measures given by products of determinants, namely, biorthogonal ensembles. An especially important subclass of biorthogonal ensembles consists of orthogonal polynomial ensembles. The article also describes L-ensembles, a general construction of determinantal point processes via the Fock space formalism, dimer models, uniform spanning trees, Hermitian correlation kernels, and Pfaffian point processes.

This chapter continues the discussion of the laws of relativistic dynamics for systems of point particles, beginning with the law of angular momentum conservation in collisions. It considers an ensemble of free particles each characterized by its (constant) momentum pa. The total momentum p = Σ‎apa does not depend on the inertial frame used, but the angular momentum will depend on the frame, because its definition involves radius vectors between an event reference point and points qa on the particle world lines. Furthermore, these are chosen to be simultaneous in a given frame. The chapter also formulates the equations of motion for particles possessing an internal rotation or ‘spin’.

Abstract:

This chapter describes the ways in which the Monte Carlo importance sampling method may be adapted to improve the calculation of ensemble averages, particularly those associated with free energy differences. These approaches include umbrella sampling, non-Boltzmann sampling, the Wang–Landau method, and nested sampling. In addition, a range of special techniques have been developed to accelerate the simulation of flexible molecules, such as polymers. These approaches are illustrated with scientific examples and program code. The chapter also explains the analysis of such simulations using techniques such as weighted histograms, and acceptance ratio calculations. Practical advice on selection of methods, parameters, and the direction in which to make comparisons, are given. Monte Carlo methods for modelling phase equilibria and chemical reactions at equilibrium are described.

Abstract:

This chapter details the making of the Sousa Band. When the modern Marine Band makes its annual tours, it travels as a representative of the Marine Corps, but their 1891 outing was to be a commercial enterprise. Every bandsman was granted leave from the military and then personally contracted to former Minnesota secretary of state David Blakely. As a result, from April 1 to May 3, 1891, the band functioned as a civilian ensemble. Performances would not be free, nor would they be spread evenly across the country. Venues were instead selected on the basis of the band's likely draw, and ticket prices were negotiated with local managers. This was to be a commercial enterprise with David Blakely at the helm.

Abstract:

Community musical theatre projects have played important roles in engaging young people of diverse ethnicities in multicultural and religious Malaysia to cross borders, deconstruct stereotypes, appreciate differences, and build interethnic peace. This essay provides insights into the strategies and dialogic approaches employed in two such community musical theatre projects that promote peace-building in Penang. The emphasis is on the making of musical theatre through participatory research, collaboration, ensemble work, and group discussions about alternative history, social relationships and cultural change. The projects also stress partnerships with the multiethnic stakeholders, communities, traditional artists, university students, and school teachers who are involved in the projects. Equally important is the creation of a safe space for intercultural dialogue, skill training, research, and assessments to take place; this a working space that allows for free and open participation, communication, play, and creative expressions for all participants.

Abstract:

This chapter focuses on the Carla Bley Band, a ten-person big band Bley had spent several years establishing. The Carla Bley Band effectively became the instrument for which she composed, the vehicle through which she could let her sonic imagination run free. The establishment of her own large ensemble following the creation of her recording studio, record label, and distribution service was part of a logical chain of events, one indicating a further step in Bley's ongoing quest for total artistic control in the creation, administration, and dissemination of her music. This freedom allowed Bley to focus on an uninhibited exploration of musical ideas in her compositions. Over the next few years the Carla Bley Band toured both Europe and the United States, recorded six albums on Watt between 1977 and 1983, and contributed a soundtrack of preexisting pieces for a Claude Miller film called Mortelle Randonee.

This chapter presents the existing modelling frameworks for multiplex and multilayer networks. Multiplex network models are divided into growing multiplex network models and null models of multiplex networks. Growing multiplex networks are here shown to explain the main dynamical rules responsible to the emergent properties of multiplex networks, including the scale-free degree distribution, interlayer degree correlations and multilayer communities. Null models of multiplex networks are described in the context of maximum-entropy multiplex network ensembles. Randomization algorithms to test the relevant of network properties against null models are here described. Moreover, Multi-slice temporal networks Models capturing main properties of real temporal network data are presented. Finally, null models of general multilayer networks and networks of networks are characterized.

On the other hand, each character offers the actor a tremendous performance opportunity in portraying a complicated psychology, primarily communicated through richly expressive music and sophisticated lyrics. In this groundbreaking 1970 ensemble musical about a bachelor’s encounters with five married couples and three girlfriends, Sondheim’s female characters occupy a striking range of types within one show. From the bitter, acerbic, thrice-married Joanne to the reluctant bride-to-be Amy, and from the self-described “dumb” “stewardess” April to the free-spirited Marta,Company’s eight women are distillations of femininity, precisely sketched in the short, singular scenes in which they appear.
