It focuses on the movement’s theoretical framework and general orientation in order to show how the various and distinct frameworks that emerged throughout the evolution of the movement were selected, adjusted and creatively reworked within the movement. This allowed these frameworks to adapt to changing local social, cultural, and environ- mental conditions through a process that also enriched them and imbued them with new meanings through contact with the perspectives of coastal agricultural and fishing communities, as well as with indigenous Naayeri communities in the mountains.

Lwanga-Thomson, Amanda. "A juxtaposition of worldviews : how emerging regenerative frameworks can be enriched by Plains Cree ways of knowing." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/56250.

Full text
Abstract:
Proponents of regenerative design and development have attempted to adopt Indigenous philosophies and sacred teachings into their research and publications. Though well intentioned, merely using quotations from Indigenous people does not constitute a culturally sensitive approach to learning from Indigenous ways of knowing. Even though some founding theories draw on Indigenous ways of knowing, existing regenerative frameworks do not explicitly take a holistic approach to exploring the worldviews, values, processes and practices, which are the basis of Indigenous teachings. Without acknowledging how Indigenous knowledges were formed and how subsequent processes and practices have been shaped, regenerative researchers leave themselves in a position to be criticized for oversimplifying, tokenizing or romanticizing aspects of Indigenous ways of knowing by a-contextually attempting to adopt Indigenous teaching into their methodologies. A thorough and careful exploration of the intersecting worldviews, values, processes and practices between Indigenous ways of knowing and regenerative methodologies has not previously been undertaken. In this thesis I endeavour to answer the following questions. First, what commonalities or nuanced differences exist between the worldviews, values, processes and practices of Plains Cree and regenerative practitioners? Second, to what extent can emerging regenerative frameworks, be enriched by Plains Cree ways of knowing? In response to the research questions six recommendations were established which address the following topics: 1. Articulating the community’s worldview; 2. Planning for changing contexts; 3. Using human experiences to validate scientific data; 4. Maintaining balance through reciprocity; 5. Transforming interconnections into synergies; and 6. Looking beyond scientific and “professional” roles. The lessons learned from this research will have the potential to reshape how practitioners and other community participants use regenerative tools and shift who participates in the regenerative process.

Hammad, R. "A hybrid e-learning framework : process-based, semantically-enriched and service-oriented." Thesis, University of the West of England, Bristol, 2018. http://eprints.uwe.ac.uk/35001/.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the recent innovations in e-Learning, much development is needed to ensure better learning experience for everyone and bridge the research gap in the current state of the art e-Learning artefacts. Contemporary e-learning artefacts possess various limitations as follows. First, they offer inadequate variations of adaptivity, since their recommendations are limited to e-learning resources, peers or communities. Second, they are often overwhelmed with technology at the expense of proper pedagogy and learning theories underpinning e-learning practices. Third, they do not comprehensively capture the e-learning experiences as their focus shifts to e-learning activities instead of e-learning processes. In reality, learning is a complex process that includes various activities and interactions between different roles to achieve certain gaols in a continuously evolving environment. Fourth, they tend more towards legacy systems and lack the agility and flexibility in their structure and design. To respond to the above limitations, this research aims at investigating the effectiveness of combining three advanced technologies (i.e., Business Process Modelling and Enactment, Semantics and Service Oriented Computing – SOC–) with learning pedagogy in order to enhance the e-learner experience. The key design artefact of this research is the development of the HeLPS e-Learning Framework – Hybrid e-Learning Framework that is Process-based, Semantically-enriched and Service Oriented-enabled. In this framework, a generic e-learning process has been developed bottom-up based on surveying a wide range of e-learning models (i.e., practical artefacts) and their underpinning pedagogies/concepts (i.e., theories); and then forming a generic e-learning process. Furthermore, an e-Learning Meta-Model has been developed in order to capture the semantics of e-learning domain and its processes. Such processes have been formally modelled and dynamically enacted using a service-oriented enabled architecture. This framework has been evaluated using a concern-based evaluation employing both static and dynamic approaches. The HeLPS e-Learning Framework along with its components have been evaluated by applying a data-driven approach and artificially-constructed case study to check its effectiveness in capturing the semantics, enriching e-learning processes and deriving services that can enhance the e-learner experience. Results revealed the effectiveness of combining the above-mentioned technologies in order to enhance the e-learner experience. Also, further research directions have been suggested. This research contributes to enhancing the e-learner experience by making the e-learning artefacts driven by pedagogy and informed by the latest technologies. One major novel contribution of this research is the introduction of a layered architectural framework (i.e., HeLPS) that combines business process modelling and enactment, semantics and SOC together. Another novel contribution is adopting the process-based approach in e-learning domain through: identifying these processes and developing a generic business process model from a set of related e-learning business process models that have the same goals and associated objectives. A third key contribution is the development of the e-Learning Meta-Model, which captures a high-abstract view of learning domain and encapsulates various domain rules using the Semantic Web Rule Language. Additional contribution is promoting the utilisation of Service-Orientation in e-learning through developing a semantically-enriched approach to identify and discover web services from e-learning business process models. Fifth, e-Learner Experience Model (eLEM) and e-Learning Capability Maturity Model (eLCMM) have been developed, where the former aims at identifying and quantifying the e-learner experience and the latter represents a well-defined evolutionary plateau towards achieving a mature e-learning process from a technological perspective. Both models have been combined with a new developed data-driven Validation and Verification Model to develop a Concern-based Evaluation Approach for e-Learning artefacts, which is considered as another contribution.

Full text
Abstract:
Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is becoming the mainstream for providing efficient and agile business solutions that can keep up with changes demanded by the business world. The task of identifying candidate services is one of the main activities in developing software service-oriented models. The current service identification approaches exhibit some limitations, where they are either too complex to be adopted, too simple to satisfy all SOA principles, or are theoretical approaches that are far from automation. On the other side, ontologies have been introduced in a number of phases in the SOA development lifecycle, mainly in the design and implementation phases. This research is concerned with introducing an ontology-based framework to semantically generate services from business process architectures (BPA) and using a simple service identification approach that is based on the BP A for an organisation. In this research, a novel architectural framework has been introduced that is generic, extensible, BPA-driven, ontology-based and domain independent, but uses a simple and automatic service identification approach that adheres to SOA principles. We named this framework BPAOntoSOA, and its activities are structured into two main layers. The first layer is concerned with generating a business process architecture ontology, namely the BPAOnt ontology, for a particular organisation given the Riva-based business process architecture of that organisation and the set of associated business process models. The second layer is concerned with identifying the software services using the generated BP AOnt ontology for that organisation. In order to realise this framework, we developed the abstract BP AOnt ontology to provide a conceptual representation of Riva BP A elements and the associated BPM elements. We have also proposed a novel service identification approach based on the Riva BPA and utilised its simplicity (as being systematic in identifying and modelling a BPA) to identify services in a simple and straightforward manner while satisfying SOA principles. The BP AOntoSOA framework, the BP AOnt ontology and the proposed service identification approach have been evaluated using the Jordan's Cancer Care and Registration (CCR) processes case study in an attempt to assess the correctness of the service identification approach as well as the framework behaviour in general. This has revealed that: (1) the BP AOnt ontology contributes remarkably not only as a major component in the BP AOntoSOA framework, but also as a source of business knowledge describing the process architecture and associated business process models of an organisation to be extracted and reused, (2) the service identification approach is simple, automatic and conforms to SOAprinciples, (3) the introduction of the concept of RP A clusters to the Riva method in order group related architectural elements forming the basis for identifying services and, (4) a further suggested modification to the Riva method in order to provide better conformance to SOA principles and hence better alignment between BP As and the service oriented model of computing. In Conclusion, this research has contributed to align business process architecture and the service oriented model of computing through the newly introduced BPAOntoSOA framework. xix

Amir, Mohammad. "Semantically-enriched and semi-Autonomous collaboration framework for the Web of Things. Design, implementation and evaluation of a multi-party collaboration framework with semantic annotation and representation of sensors in the Web of Things and a case study on disaster management." Thesis, University of Bradford, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/14363.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes a collaboration framework for the Web of Things based on the concepts of Service-oriented Architecture and integrated with semantic web technologies to offer new possibilities in terms of efficient asset management during operations requiring multi-actor collaboration. The motivation for the project comes from the rise in disasters where effective cross-organisation collaboration can increase the efficiency of critical information dissemination. Organisational boundaries of participants as well as their IT capability and trust issues hinders the deployment of a multi-party collaboration framework, thereby preventing timely dissemination of critical data. In order to tackle some of these issues, this thesis proposes a new collaboration framework consisting of a resource-based data model, resource-oriented access control mechanism and semantic technologies utilising the Semantic Sensor Network Ontology that can be used simultaneously by multiple actors without impacting each other’s networks and thus increase the efficiency of disaster management and relief operations. The generic design of the framework enables future extensions, thus enabling its exploitation across many application domains. The performance of the framework is evaluated in two areas: the capability of the access control mechanism to scale with increasing number of devices, and the capability of the semantic annotation process to increase in efficiency as more information is provided. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework is fit for purpose.

Over growing years, the changing trend of IT infrastructure has introduced the concept of new technologies to meet the customer/client requirements. The usage of information and communication techniqueshas been widely distributed. The internet evolution has revolutionized the system configurations, network usage and service availability criteria. This leads to the emergence of Cloud Computing era. Cloud Computing provides a means to enable the distributed system resources to collaborate togetherand provides certain services related to infrastructure and platform etc. It’s a pay per usage policy. Clientscould consume services as per its needs and enroll for payment accordingly. This technology brought certain factors/issues to be considered like security threats, data security issues etc. Cloud Security has become most challenging, crucial and important work in today’s Cloud Computing era. The information security has become the top most priority for the cloud service provider along withthe client as well. There have been various kinds of security threats imposed on system infrastructure.Certain surveys have been processed and a huge amount of research work is on progress to solve such potential threats through outsider attacks. In thesis work,Cloud Security based research work has been done significantly and various approachesto improvise security levels have been designed, implemented and evaluated accordingly.

Ndlovu, Mdutshekelwa. "Modeling with Sketchpad to enrich students' concept image of the derivative in introductory calculus : developing domain specific understanding." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/24013.

Full text
Abstract:
It was the purpose of this design study to explore the Geometer’s Sketchpad dynamic mathematics software as a tool to model the derivative in introductory calculus in a manner that would foster a deeper conceptual understanding of the concept – developing domain specific understanding. Sketchpad’s transformation capabilities have been proved useful in the exploration of mathematical concepts by younger learners, college students and professors. The prospect of an open-ended exploration of mathematical concepts motivated the author to pursue the possibility of representing the concept of derivative in dynamic forms. Contemporary CAS studies have predominantly dwelt on static algebraic, graphical and numeric representations and the connections that students are expected to make between them. The dynamic features of Sketchpad and such like software, have not been elaborately examined in so far as they have the potential to bridge the gap between actions, processes and concepts on the one hand and between representations on the other. In this study Sketchpad model-eliciting activities were designed, piloted and revised before a final implementation phase with undergraduate non-math major science students enrolled for an introductory calculus course. Although most of these students had some pre-calculus and calculus background, their performance in the introductory course remained dismal and their grasp of the derivative slippery. The dual meaning of the derivative as the instantaneous rate of change and as the rate of change function was modeled in Sketchpad’s multiple representational capabilities. Six forms of representation were identified: static symbolic, static graphic, static numeric, dynamic graphic, dynamic numeric and occasionally dynamic symbolic. The activities enabled students to establish conceptual links between these representations. Students were able to switch systematically from one form of (foreground or background) representation to another leading to a unique qualitative understanding of the derivative as the invariant concept across the representations. Experimental students scored significantly higher in the posttest than in the pretest. However, in comparison with control group students the experimental students performed significantly better than control students in non-routine problems. A cyclical model of developing a deeper concept image of the derivative is therefore proposed in this study.

Huque, Md Hamidul. "Spatial modeling, covariate measurement error and design issues in environmental epidemiology." Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10453/62190.

Full text
Abstract:
University of Technology Sydney. Faculty of Science.
In this thesis we develop methods to resolve a series of problems motivated by the analysis of administrative data to help explain geographical variation in disease rates. The Conditional auto-regressive (CAR) structure within a hierarchical generalized linear model offers a robust, flexible, and popular class of models for the exploration and analysis of geographical variation across small areas. However, lack of modeling strategies for individual level covariate data is a limitation of the existing methodology. We propose an individual level covariate adjusted conditional auto-regressive (indiCAR) model to incorporate both individual and area level covariates while adjusting for spatial correlation in disease rates. We also extend the indiCAR method to a semiparametric mixed model framework that allows adjustment for smooth covariate effects (smooth-indiCAR). We illustrate the applicability of both methods in a distributed computing framework that enhances its application in the Big Data domain with a large number of individual/group level covariates involved. We evaluate the performance of indiCAR and smooth-indiCAR through simulation studies. Our results indicate that both methods provide reliable estimates of all the regression and random effect parameters. The estimated regression coefficient based on the CAR modeling, however, appears to be sensitive to the assumed spatial correlation structure. We hypothesize that such sensitivity is especially likely to occur when the covariate of interest has been measured with error. We quantify the biases of covariate measurement error, showing that the amount of attenuation depends on the degree of spatial correlation in both the covariate of interest and the assumed random error from the regression model. These results explain why the estimates obtained from spatial regression modeling are often so sensitive to the assumed model error structure. We propose and develop both a parametric and a semiparametric approach to obtain bias corrected estimate. Statistical analysis of administrative data often helps in uncovering trends and patterns that need to be followed up via traditional epidemiologic investigations. Case control studies are often the first choice. However, appropriate selection of controls and lack of power to detect interaction effect are the main concerns of a case control design. We propose a variant of the classical case-control design, the exposure enriched case-control (EECC) design, where not only cases, but also high (or low) exposed individuals are over-sampled, depending on the skewness of the exposure distribution. We show that the judicious oversampling of exposure is possible and can boost the study power particularly when susceptibility genes are rare and environmental exposure is highly skewed.

Abstract:
Narrative medicine is a clinical practice fortified by complex narrative skills that equip healthcare professionals to recognize, absorb, interpret, and be moved to action by patients’ and colleagues’ stories of illness. Founded in 2000 at Columbia University by the authors of this volume, narrative medicine provides rigorous conceptual frameworks and practical clinical methods to increase the accuracy and scope of clinicians’ knowledge of their patients and to deepen their therapeutic partnerships. This book presents the authors’ views, enriched by collaboration with a worldwide network of colleagues, of the workings of the narrative, relational, and reflexive processes of healthcare. Literary theory, narratology, continental philosophies, aesthetic theory, and cultural studies provide the intellectual foundations of narrative medicine, while primary care practice, patient-centered care, psychoanalysis, and interprofessional practice supply the clinical foundations. The book provides both principles and practices of the central tenets of the discipline—relationality and emotion, the philosophies of embodiment, ethicality, participatory pedagogy, close reading, creativity, and clinical practice. Each Part of this volume explains the conceptual foundations of its subject and demonstrates the pedagogic or clinical methods of putting those principles into action. Narrative medicine has grown since its inception into an international movement including many health professional disciplines, patients, families, and institutions. The overarching goal of narrative medicine is to improve the effectiveness of healthcare. This volume provides the standards of the field’s theory and practice as a guide to all who are now joining in this creative commitment to improve healthcare for all.

Abstract:
This new book edited by Julia Iliopoulos-Strangas continues and, for the time being, concludes her examination of fundamental social rights as an integral part of the constitutional frameworks of the EU’s Member States, which she has conducted for many years. Her first anthology in French entitled ‘La protection des droits sociaux fondamentaux dans les Etats membres de l’Union européenne – Étude de droit comparé’ was followed in 2010 by her first book in German entitled ‘Soziale Grundrechte in Europa nach Lissabon – Eine rechtsvergleichende Untersuchung der nationalen Rechtsordnungen und des europäischen Rechts’ (Fundamental Social Rights in Europe after the Treaty of Lisbon—A legal comparative examination of national legal systems and EU law). According to Klaus Stern in the book’s foreword, through this study Iliopoulos-Strangas had enriched the academic world and political and legal practice with an unrivalled work. This new book contains contributions by renowned legal experts from all the ‘new’ EU Member States, namely from the former Eastern bloc, Malta and Cyprus. In part 1, reports on each country reveal the extent to which the individual constitutions of the ‘new’ EU Member States have upheld basic social rights. Part 2 is comprised of a critical legal comparison and survey by the editor, which collates important findings on the protection of fundamental social rights in the aforementioned 13 new EU Member States that have as yet been unavailable in such a form. As the European Court of Justice has taken recourse to the constitutional traditions of the EU’s Member States, the legal comparison the book conducts in this respect appears to be essential for the development of EU law.

Abstract:
Recent years have witnessed an emergence of entrepreneurship research in mainstream economics, some of which relates to legal institutions. The current literature exhibits considerable methodological disarray, however. There is no agreed definition for entrepreneurship — for example, whether innovation is a necessary element or whether self-employment suffices, or whether self-employment and ownership of a small business firm are equally entrepreneurial. Likewise, there is often no clear definition of, and distinction among, various social institutions. This makes it difficult to compare and even relate studies to one another. This article adopts an institutional economics approach its basic analytical framework. Social institutions are thus defined as the written and unwritten ‘rules of the game’: laws, norms, beliefs, and so forth. This framework is enriched primarily with insights from cross-cultural psychology, the discipline that specializes in cross-national comparisons of culture.

This chapter examines previous research on tensions in HRM, focusing on the contributions and limitations of these perspectives for understanding and handling tensions. Second, it focuses on what characterizes the dynamics of coping with tensions. Here, paradox theory is drawn on to consider conditions for alternative response/coping strategies and processes that characterize reinforcing cycles. The chapter offers insights from the (limited) body of work in HRM that draws on paradox theory. Thirdly, the chapter offers a paradox framework to aid the study of HRM tensions. Finally, it concludes with suggestions for further HRM research on tensions and coping responses enriched by insights from a paradox perspective.

Dementia is a global issue but is experienced at an individual and relational level. This chapter traces the emergence of both person centred care and relationship centred care with the latter approach expressed through the Senses Framework. The theoretical development and practical application of the Senses [security, belonging, continuity, purpose, achievement, significance] are outlined highlighting the importance of staff, carer and person [with dementia in this chapter] all working together. The application of the Senses Framework to a recent practice development study set in a care home for people with dementia that used a combination of the Senses and life story work to create an 'enriched environment is then described. The chapter concludes with a discussion about how the Senses can be used to facilitate an early diagnosis of dementia and to help people with dementia and their families to engage with a life ‘outside the front door’, what we term ‘The Neighbourhood Space’.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter introduces Part III of the book. Contributing chapters illustrate the role of a culturally enriched form of values-based practice in building best practice in the design and delivery of contemporary mental health services. Topics covered from the model of values-based practice set out in chapter ‘Surprised by Values: An Introduction to Values-Based Practice and the Use of Personal Narratives in this Book’ include, person-values-centred care, the extended multidisciplinary team, shared clinical decision-making supported by dissensus within frameworks of shared values, and recovery practice. The bottom-line message is that incorporated into values-based practice, cultural values cease to operate as barriers to, and instead become effective vectors of, best practice in mental health.

Abstract:
Abstract Paraffin-based fuels such as paraffin, beeswax, and others are considered as an advanced fuels for Hybrid Propellant Rocket Engine (HPRE). Starting from 2010, engineering faculty/student teams were performing long-term experimental study of the combustion of pure paraffin-based fuels and paraffin-based fuels enriched by aluminum powder in the frameworks of engineering senior capstone design projects and faculty/student research. Test fixture, consisted of unique lab-scale HPRE, oxygen supply system, propane supply system, flow control systems, ignition system, instrumentation system and data acquisition system were designed and built. More than 130 experiments were performed aimed to study the combustion of bio-derived fuels. Dozens of regression rate formulas were obtained which are essential for the prediction and analysis of combustion parameters and calculation of HPRE thrust and specific impulse. Student-faculty teams discovered experimentally and simulated theoretically a considerable loss of unburned paraffin-based fuels and estimated the influence of these losses on the regression rates. Performing this multidisciplinary challenging project student teams faced with a variety of problems and successfully resolved them. HPRE project provided mechanical engineering students with excellent opportunity to apply their knowledge, skills, and experience from a variety of courses to the real-life design and research.

Abstract:
Studies considering street environment quality’s impact on housing value were limited to top-down variables such as the green ratio measured from satellite maps. In contrast, this study quantified street views’ impacts on the value of second-hand commodity residential properties in Shanghai based on analysis of street view imagery. (1) It applied computer vision to objectively measure street features from largely accessible street view imagery. (2) Based on the classical urban design measures frameworks, it applied machine learning to evaluate human perceived street quality as street scores systematically, in contrast to the common practice of doing so in a more intuition-based fashion. (3) It further identified important indicators from both human-centered street scores as well as the more objective street feature measures with positive or adverse effects on property values based on a hedonic modeling method. The estimation suggested both street scores and features are significant and non-negligible. For the perceived street scores (from 0-10 scale), neighborhoods with a unit increase in their “enclosure” or “safety” score enjoy price premium of 0.3% to 0.6%. Meanwhile, streets with 10% greater tree canopy exposure are attributable to a 0.2% increase in the property value. This study enriched our current understanding at a micro level of the factors that impact property values from the perspective of the built environment. It introduced human-centered perception of street scores and objective measures of street features as spatial variables into the analysis of neighborhood attribute vectors.

Alan, Ilemin N. "AN EVALUATION OF CLIMATE CHANGE FROM A LEGAL PERSPECTIVE OF TURKEY IN THE SCOPE OF INTERNATIONAL LAW." In The 5th International Conference on Climate Change 2021 – (ICCC 2021). The International Institute of Knowledge Management, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.17501/2513258x.2021.5106.

Full text
Abstract:
Climate change is a global emergency. Each country's efforts and responses to climate change are of significance individually. The dynamics behind their attitudes are needed to be understood to harmonize global response. Turkey is of a different legal approach than the international community generally. For instance, it is the only G20 country that is not a party to the Paris Agreement. Also, the legal perspective of Turkey is of particular significance for the European Union to achieve its targets. Thus, the question of international legal steps taken and the next steps by Turkey arises. To evaluate this situation, the legal frameworks are analyzed with specific reference to Turkey. It was found that Turkey has been demanding to be recognized as a developing country in the international climate instruments. Although Turkey put some afford to act against climate change, it was not seen as adequate by scientific reports. Also, international and regional human rights instruments have been invoked by individuals for the current policies of Turkey and legal proceedings were started. For an efficient response to climate change, key points regarding common but differentiated responsibilities, the relationships between international and national laws, and the importance of laws with comparing regulations and political instruments are addressed to see how these points can inform recommendations. It is concluded that the ratification of the Paris Agreement is required in the first place. Then, enriched legal perspective in international law, and new specific climate laws in national laws are a necessity to provide a meaningful legal response to this global threat. It is hoped that other legal systems may benefit from analyzing its legal perspective. Every country needs to contribute to the shared enterprise of combatting climate change if the future of humanity and the natural world is to be assured. Attansio, Orazio, and Debbie Blair. Structural modelling in policymaking. Centre for Excellence and Development Impact and Learning (CEDIL), November 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.51744/cip9.

Full text
Abstract:
Structural modelling, that is the use of behavioural models to add a framework to the decision problem of an agent, is a useful yet underused tool in evaluation. This paper provides a general introduction to structural modelling, as well as an overview of other commonly used evaluation techniques in Economics and other social sciences. It then goes on to show with three key case studies, how structural models can be used to enrich the findings from randomised control trials. The case studies cover a wide range of policy questions: examining demand for health products in Kenya, incentivising teachers to attend school in India, and evaluating conditional cash transfers for education in Mexico. The case studies show how structural models add to our understanding of the mechanisms behind a given treatment effect, how the findings may change when the policy is rolled out under different circumstances, as well as allowing for the evaluation of different policies that were not originally trialled. The common pitfalls of structural models are discussed, with guidance provided throughout on how to conduct sensitivity analysis and model validation. It is hoped that this paper will persuade other researchers to use structural models, in conjunction with randomised control trials, that will lead to improved evaluation results, a deeper understanding of important problems, and better informed policymaking in the future.

Hall, Mark, and Neil Price. Medieval Scotland: A Future for its Past. Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, September 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.09.2012.165.

Full text
Abstract:
The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings. Underpinning all five areas is the recognition that human narratives remain crucial for ensuring the widest access to our shared past. There is no wish to see political and economic narratives abandoned but the need is recognised for there to be an expansion to more social narratives to fully explore the potential of the diverse evidence base. The questions that can be asked are here framed in a national context but they need to be supported and improved a) by the development of regional research frameworks, and b) by an enhanced study of Scotland’s international context through time. 1. From North Britain to the Idea of Scotland: Understanding why, where and how ‘Scotland’ emerges provides a focal point of research. Investigating state formation requires work from Medieval Scotland: a future for its past ii a variety of sources, exploring the relationships between centres of consumption - royal, ecclesiastical and urban - and their hinterlands. Working from site-specific work to regional analysis, researchers can explore how what would become ‘Scotland’ came to be, and whence sprang its inspiration. 2. Lifestyles and Living Spaces: Holistic approaches to exploring medieval settlement should be promoted, combining landscape studies with artefactual, environmental, and documentary work. Understanding the role of individual sites within wider local, regional and national settlement systems should be promoted, and chronological frameworks developed to chart the changing nature of Medieval settlement. 3. Mentalities: The holistic understanding of medieval belief (particularly, but not exclusively, in its early medieval or early historic phase) needs to broaden its contextual understanding with reference to prehistoric or inherited belief systems and frames of reference. Collaborative approaches should draw on international parallels and analogues in pursuit of defining and contrasting local or regional belief systems through integrated studies of portable material culture, monumentality and landscape. 4. Empowerment: Revisiting museum collections and renewing the study of newly retrieved artefacts is vital to a broader understanding of the dynamics of writing within society. Text needs to be seen less as a metaphor and more as a technological and social innovation in material culture which will help the understanding of it as an experienced, imaginatively rich reality of life. In archaeological terms, the study of the relatively neglected cultural areas of sensory perception, memory, learning and play needs to be promoted to enrich the understanding of past social behaviours. 5. Parameters: Multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and cross-sector approaches should be encouraged in order to release the research potential of all sectors of archaeology. Creative solutions should be sought to the challenges of transmitting the importance of archaeological work and conserving the resource for current and future research.
