Abstract:
The present study tends to determine what kinds of linguistic features and styles distinguish Medical English from literary English. Corpus analyses of both the varieties were taken into account. Ten scientific research papers drawn from each genre were linguistically analyzed. It was found that the kind of English used in Medical sciences is marked with accuracy, precision and hybridized language mixed with Latin and French. Medical scientists reveal proven facts and findings whereas literary writers just illustrate their creative thoughts with illusions, allusions and figurative language. Literary language contains non universal features and represents the artist's inner self which doesn't at all need extraneous and empirical evidence to put forth his spontaneous overflow of powerful feeling. On the contrary, medical language needs empirical experience and experimental validity. The investigation also suggests that medical English contains more passivation, nominalization, lexical density and foregrounding which are found far less in literary English. Moreover, medical scientists unlike literary artists , are adhered to a clearly defined IMRAD structure which contains Introduction, Methods, Result and Discussion sections.

Introduction: Each year, more than 30,000 students sit in the Government sponsored Entrance Test conducted by University ofHealth Sciences, Lahore for admission in Public and Private Medical & Dental Institutes of Punjab, Pakistan. Objective: In this study, we haveembarked to seek the relationship of the performance of students in the English component of the test and their sciences components scoresand how this English-Science relationship varies amongst the developed and underdeveloped districts of Punjab, Pakistan. Period: Threeyears from 2008 to 2010. Methodology: The sciences components scores of the candidates in MCAT, their scores in English portion in the testand their demographic variables were entered into Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) v.16. Parametric tests were applied.Results: Nearly 14% of the question paper tests proficiency of the candidates in the English Grammar. The students from thesocioeconomically challenged districts scored less marks in English component as well as in the sciences component of Entrance Test whencompared with the scores of the students of more developed districts (p<0.05). The difference in the mean marks of English and Sciencescomponents of the test when adjusted for weightage was higher in the socioeconomically developed districts (p<0.05). A steady improvementfrom 2008 to 2010 in the scores obtained by candidates in English component of the Entrance Test was observed (p<0.05). Conclusions: Foradmission in Medical and Dental Colleges in Punjab, candidates scoring more than 60% marks in their Higher Secondary School CertificateBoard Examination, have to sit in a uniform Entrance Test in which from the year 2008-2009, candidates from socioeconomically low districtshave performed poorly in both English component and sciences components of test in comparison to the candidates from more developeddistricts. The comparatively lower score is more significant in sciences components of test. The lower scores of the less developed districts,candidates can not therefore be attributed to their low proficiency in the English language but rather to a lower general educational performance.

Abstract Since the Barcelona objective released on 16 March 2002, European Union met an ambitious goal: to promote learning of “at least two foreign languages from an early age” (European Commission 2019). Thus, bilingualism, multilingualism, and linguistic diversity became a part of European policy (Pokrivčáková 2013a; Pokrivčáková 2013b; Schunz 2012). Nevertheless, English language is still considered to be the global language, used as lingua franca. English is the language of international dialogue facilitating further educational and professional development, it is the language of international communication, science, academia, and the Internet (Dearden 2014). English is the first foreign language taught in Slovakia, and therefore majority of Slovak medical students chose the course of Medical English during their study. To develop communicative competence and performance in students, it is necessary to offer a very wide range of stimulating activities in English classes. Videos published on the Internet offer enormous potential for foreign or second language (L2) acquisition at every level according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in almost all learning phases, covering a significant variety of authentic topics (Barnau, Džuganová, Malinovská 2018). Our study is particularly aimed at watching of YouTube professional medical videos with/without captions and their effect on English language skills, especially listening comprehension in medical students at Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin, Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia (JFM UC).

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of English medical terminology, namely – its functional aspect. Terminology plays a significant role in people's professional communication, as it serves as a source of obtaining, transmitting scientific information and as a tool for mastering the specialty. Terminology is part of the scientific apparatus, which makes it possible to learn the laws of the research process, to identify channels of interaction with other elements of a particular field of science. At the present stage, one of the main tasks of linguistics is the stratification of the vocabulary of a particular language by various parameters, in particular, by the scope of use of a particular lexical unit. The material of this study were terms and terminological phrases that denote the main medical concepts, selected by a method of selection from scientific articles relating to various subject areas of medicine, dictionaries, Internet sites dedicated to medicine. The studied material is considered by us from the standpoint of system-functional approach, which involves the study of language in general and the language of scientific style of presentation in particular as a complex formation, which highlights the components and relationships between them. The ways of forming new terms can be divided into the following groups: 1. morphological way of word formation – derivation, abbreviation; 2. syntactic, through the formation of phrases and phrases from several words; 3. semantic – narrowing of the meaning of commonly used words; metaphorical and metonymic transfer of the former meaning; 4. borrowing words from other languages. The most productive way to form medical terms is derivation. The research conducted on the basis of English medical terminology is the first stage of the study of the relationship between cognitive structures of consciousness and semantics of the term, between the worldview of the English speaker (medical specialist) and the structure of general and specialized dictionaries and texts.

Learning motivation is closely related to second language acquisition. Strong learning motivation can make up for the lack of language competence and poor learning conditions to a certain extent, while lack of motivation or demotivation will hinder language-gifted learners from achieving their expected learning goals. This study investigates the demotivating factors of learning English among non-English majors in medical university by interviewing 60 undergraduates. The findings show that the demotivating factors mainly involve the teachers, teaching contents, learning environment and the learners. The study further puts forwards some practical suggestions for stimulating and maintaining students’ learning motivation.

Abstract:
This article focuses on Middle English medical recipes and aims to show that the concepts of “genre”, “text type” and “text tradition” provide useful tools for historical discourse analysis, as they operate in different ways and illustrate various sides of medieval texts. Medical recipes are a well-defined procedural genre included in a variety of contexts: they form the major contents of remedybooks, but they are also found within the learned tradition of medical writing. The reception and use of these texts can be studied through their genre contexts and other extralinguistic features. The assessment of their text-type features shows that a higher degree of standardisation is found in remedybooks; academic texts and surgical treatises show more variation. The observed differences cannot be attributed to genre, and the readership was presumably much the same. The underlying traditions seem to have been important: remedybooks were handbooks for consultation to find cures for diseases. The more standardised the format, the more easily the advice was accessible. In contrast, recipes in the learned tradition were included in longer treatises as integral parts for demonstration of the healing principles.

Abstract:
The present study analysed the use of hedges in English medical research articles written by Japanese and American researchers. The study also examined the relationship between Japanese medical professionals' employment of hedges and their writing process. Sixteen English medical articles: eight written by Japanese and eight by Americans were examined. Four of the Japanese authors discussed their writing process through questionnaires and telephone interviews.
The overall ratio of hedges in articles written by the two groups differed only slightly; however, analyses revealed a number of specific differences in the use of hedges between the groups. For example, Japanese researchers used epistemic adverbs and adjectives less frequently than the American researchers. The results were discussed in relation to the problems of nonnative speakers' grammatical competence, cultural differences in rhetorical features, and the amount of experience in the use of medical English.

Abstract:
Rhetoric, as the theory and practice of the discursive means of human influence, and science, as the observational study of the physical world, have traditionally been considered to exist in separate realms. In the past thirty years, however, theoretical convergences in the philosophy of rhetoric and the philosophy of science have yielded a discipline in the rhetoric of science—a discipline concerned with the discursive aspects of knowledge production and reproduction in the sciences. Rhetorical theory has argued convincingly in this century that all language in use is language for use and is therefore, to varying degrees, persuasive. The rhetoric of science begins from the assumption that persuasion is a factor in the construction of scientific knowledge, and from the belief that members of scientific communities (rhetorical communities in every sense) advocate versions of reality which are based in theory, formed in language, and dependent on the agreement of other scientists for their validation. This present project contributes to literature in the applied study of rhetoric of science by analyzing, from a rhetorical perspective, thirty-five scientific articles published in the last six years in major medical journals. (All of the articles are on the subject of primary—or functional—headache.) The project uses a methodology based on classical and contemporary theories of rhetoric to discover persuasive strategies in these scientific texts. It poses questions about how authorial intentions are actualized in scientific texts, how scientific texts have effects on readers, and how the texts affect the situations into which they are introduced. While scientific texts, like literary texts, could be analyzed from a variety of theoretical perspectives, rhetorical theory provides a particularly appropriate heuristic model for analyzing "real world" texts. The rhetorical analysis (which includes both an overview of the complete sample and three case studies) begins by questioning the extent to which the conventions of scientific prose (for example, use of the passive, of nominal iz at ions, of complex sentence structure; use of statistical reasoning and arguments from authority) actually produce a prose that is objective and disinterested in keeping with traditional ideals of science. The analysis shows that medical authors in fact use a variety of persuasive strategies in their articles (strategies which may be classified according to the classical canons of rhetoric), and that the writing in medical journals, is not simply objective and disinterested, although on initial reading, because of its impersonal style, it may appear to be so. The rhetorical analysis demonstrates that the use of textual features promoting an appearance of neutrality is itself a rhetorical strategy which argues for the acceptance of particular claims in scientific articles. The rhetorical analysis is significant for the theory and practice of science, for the discipline of rhetoric of science, and for the discipline of rhetoric itself. The analysis describes the complex rhetoric of scientific writing as a genre, probes the assumptions that underlie its conventions, and argues that scientific texts must be read critically, as rhetoric. To read scientific texts as rhetoric is to locate their arguments, scrutinize their forms, judge their authors, and evaluate their effects. The role of the rhetorician is to urge such reading, and everywhere to promote discussion of the ways of influence exerted especially by texts which appear at first not to be rhetorical.

lhane Military Medical Faculty and suggest a new program based on the Monitor Model. The study, as an example of a systematic study of a language program and that of a proposed syllabus, is expected to aid the practice of English Language Teaching in Turkey. The data sources were 230 students, 25 doctors and 7 teachers. The data analysis showed that students do not like the contents of the course books. Students reported speaking and reading as priority skills. A general curriculum model and a program design model were also suggested together with the syllabuses for Phase 1. In the suggested program, grammar, writing and other conscious learning activities are separated from comprehension or (subconscious) acquisition-based activities. The suggested design has three topic-based syllabuses organized in modular format for three levels: Advanced, intermediate and elementary. For the majority advanced level classes new materials need to be developed and for elementary and intermediate levels new course books are suggested. A sample module was prepared, piloted and the results are discussed. The piloted module was found better than the previous form of the lessons both by the students and the teachers.

Abstract:
Language policy and planning in Indonesia have been geared toward strengthening the national language Bahasa Indonesia and the preserving of hundreds of ethnic languages to strengthen its citizens’ linguistic identity in the mid of the pervasive English influences especially to the young generations. The study examines perceptions regarding the competitive nature of Bahasa Indonesia, ethnic languages, and English in contemporary multilingual Indonesia. Utilizing text analysis from two social media Facebook and Whatsapp users who were highly experienced and qualified language teachers and lecturers, the study revealed that the posts demonstrated discussions over language policy issues regarding Bahasa Indonesia and the preservation of ethnic language as well as the concerns over the need for greater access and exposure of English that had been limited due to recent government policies. The users seemed highly cognizant of the importance of strengthening and preserving the national and ethnic languages, but were disappointed by the lack of consistency in the implementation of these. The users were also captivated by the purchasing power English has to offer for their students. The users perceived that the government’s decision to reduce English instructional hours in the curriculum were highly politically charged and counterproductive to the nation’s advancement.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been an ongoing global disaster, which has caused unprecedented social and economic disruptions all around the world. Throughout the stages of the pandemic more than two years, mass media has played a vital role in circulating much of (mis)information regarding the pandemic. As a part of attempts to record social, cultural, and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, this research aims to pursue a data-based discourse analysis on representations of COVID-19 using data in Coronavirus Corpus developed by Mark Davies. This study examine how various types of texts mediated in English have represented any issues and situations surrounding COVID. We utilize a corpus-oriented discourse analysis framework, which integrates methods of quantity-based corpus linguistics and those of quality- based discourse analysis. The study’s implications on English education are also pursued.

Abstract:
This study aims at describing how the use of English on youtube videos play a significant role in the socialization and acquisition of the language for children in Indonesia. It particularly focuses on the depiction of how the media serve a platform for children’s English language development and socialization and whether parents or other adults’ accommodation reinforces or counteracts the language. Ethnographic interviews were conducted on five middle class parents with children of 3-5 years of age so as to collect information on children and parents’ everyday practices with the media. The findings suggest that parents’ beliefs and ideologies on foreign language socialization as well as their English proficiency lead to their primary support for English. Their everyday media consumption and communication practices with children show how arenas provided by parents have turned into an assumed form of scaffolding in the way that children reflect on the language collected from the media. The research indicates that global practices of English on the internet intersect with local practices of language socialization.

English is one of the most spoken languages in the world. A global language communication is inherent in him. This language is also distinguished by a significant diversity of dialects and speech. It appeared in the early Middle Ages as the spoken language of the Anglo-Saxons. The formation of the British Empire and its expansion led to the widespread English language in Asia, Africa, North America and Australia. As a result, the Metropolitan language became the main communication language in the English colonies, and after independence it became State (USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) and official (India, Nigeria, Singapore). Being one of the 6 Official Languages of the UN, it is studied as a foreign language in educational institutions of many countries in the modern time [1, 2, s. 12-14]. Despite the dozens of varieties of English, the American (American English) version, which appeared on the territory of the United States, is one of the most widespread. More than 80 per cent of the population in this country knows the American version of the British language as its native language. Although the American version of the British language is not defined as the official language in the US Federal Constitution, it acts with features and standards reinforced in the lexical sphere, the media and the education system. The growing political and economic power of the United States after World War II also had a significant impact on the expansion of the American version of the British language [3]. Currently, this language version has become one of the main topics of scientific research in the field of linguistics, philology and other similar spheres. It should also be emphasized that the American version of the British language paved the way for the creation of thousands of words and expressions, took its place in the general language of English and the world lexicon. “Okay”, “teenager”, “hitchhike”, “landslide” and other words can be shown in this row. The impact of differences in the life and life of colonists in the United States and Great Britain on this language was not significant either. The role of Nature, Climate, Environment and lifestyle should also be appreciated here. There is no officially confirmed language accent in the United States. However, most speakers of national media and, first of all, the CNN channel use the dialect “general American accent”. Here, the main accent of “mid Pppemestern” has been guided. It should also be noted that this accent is inherent in a very small part of the U.S. population, especially in Nebraska, Iowa, and Illinois. But now all Americans easily understand and speak about it. As for the current state of the American version of the British language, we can say that there are some hypotheses in this area. A number of researchers perceive it as an independent language, others-as an English variant. The founder of American spelling, American and British lexicographer, linguist Noah Pondebster treats him as an independent language. He also tried to justify this in his work “the American Dictionary of English” written in 1828 [4]. This position was expressed by a Scottish-born English philologist, one of the authors of the “American English Dictionary”Sir Alexander Craigie, American linguist Raven ioor McDavid Jr. and others also confirm [5]. The second is the American linguist Leonard Bloomfield, one of the creators of the descriptive direction of structural linguistics, and other American linguists Edward Sapir and Charles Francis Hockett. There is also another group of “third parties” that accept American English as a regional dialect [5, 6]. A number of researchers [2] have shown that the accent or dialect in the US on the person contains significantly less data in itself than in the UK. In Great Britain, a dialect speaker is viewed as a person with a low social environment or a low education. It is difficult to perceive this reality in the US environment. That is, a person's speech in the American version of the British language makes it difficult to express his social background. On the other hand, the American version of the British language is distinguished by its faster pace [7, 8]. One of the main characteristic features of the American language array is associated with the emphasis on a number of letters and, in particular, the pronunciation of the letter “R”. Thus, in British English words like “port”, “more”, “dinner” the letter “R” is not pronounced at all. Another trend is related to the clear pronunciation of individual syllables in American English. Unlike them, the Britons “absorb”such syllables in a number of similar words [8]. Despite all these differences, an analysis of facts and theoretical knowledge shows that the emergence and formation of the American version of the British language was not an accidental and chaotic process. The reality is that the life of the colonialists had a huge impact on American English. These processes were further deepened by the growing migration trends at the later historical stage. Thus, the language of the English-speaking migrants in America has been developed due to historical conditions, adapted to the existing living environment and new life realities. On the other hand, the formation of this independent language was also reflected in the purposeful policy of the newly formed US state. Thus, the original British words were modified and acquired a fundamentally new meaning. Another point here was that the British acharism, which had long been out of use, gained a new breath and actively entered the speech circulation in the United States. Thus, the analysis shows that the American version of the British language has specific features. It was formed and developed as a result of colonization and expansion. This development is still ongoing and is one of the languages of millions of US states and people, as well as audiences of millions of people. The results of the report are required to include at least one of the following outcome indicators: The self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), and effectiveness rate. Review question / Objective: The present study aims to systematically review and summarize the available literature on the diagnostic accuracy of COVID-19 diagnostic tests. To do this, a systematic review of the medical literature was carried out between 2020 and 2021. The results were analyzed through a meta-analysis based on the techniques developed and used in the diagnosis of COVID-19. Eligibility criteria: The studies were selected in three stages. In the first, non-English language articles, duplicate articles, reviews, and meta-analyses were excluded, only articles published between 2020 and 2021 conducted on humans were included. In the second stage, the titles and ab-stracts of the articles selected through the search strategy were examined. Finally, the highly relevant full studies were retrieved and separated from the articles with a title or abstract that did not provide sufficient data to be included.
