RESUMENEste artículo sopesa las principales derrotas en las investigaciones en torno a la presencia, recepción e influjo del Quijote en la novela inglesa del siglo XVIII. Se parte aquí de la distinción establecida entre novelas inglesas dieciochescas de temática quijotesca (las denominadas Quixotic fictions) y aquellas cuyas características formales se inspiran en el Quijote (las Cervantean novels). Respecto de las primeras se subraya la escasez deestudios y las muchas posibilidades que estas brindan al estudioso que quiera indagar en el tratamiento satírico de la compleja sociedad que las inspiró. De las Cervantean novels se destaca su engarce con la literatura de los dos siglos precedentes. La influencia cervantina en autores del Dieciocho como Fielding, Smollett y Sterne, en contraposición a la influencia picaresca en el Diecisiete, se explica aquí por razón de la necesidad, enla primera mitad del XVIII, de dotar la narrativa inglesa de las características formales de la novela moderna, lo cual hallaron en el Quijote.PALABRAS CLAVECervantes en Inglaterra, Quijote, novela inglesa del siglo XVIII, ficción cervantina, ficción quijotesca. TITLE«Don Quixote’s» sallies in eighteenth-century english fictionABSTRACTThis article is a critique of the mainstream strands in the research into Don Quixote’s reception in England and its influence on eighteenth-century English fiction. It offers a survey of the fictional narratives with a quixotic theme (the so-called Quixotic fictions) and those which deploy formal features taken from Don Quixote(known as Cervantean novels). The discussion of Quixotic fictions notes they have attracted little critical attention, and suggests the need for future studies of their intriguing satirical scope. This article also pinpoints the need to study Cervantean fictions of the eighteenth century in relation to seventeenth-century English fiction. This article notes that whilst Spanish picaresque novels were the main foreign influence on English fiction of the seventeenth century, the great writers of the eighteenth century, namely Fielding, Smollett and Sterne, preferred Don Quixote since Cervantes’ novel provided them with the formal features of the modern novel, at a time when these authors sought to establish canon of modern fiction in the English language.KEY WORDSCervantes in England, Don Quixote, eighteenth-century English novel, Cervantean fiction, Quixotic fiction.

Abstract:
We propose a lexico-grammatical approach to speech in fiction based on the centrality of ‘fictional speech-bundles’ as the key element of fictional talk. To identify fictional speech-bundles, we use three corpora of 19th-century fiction that are available through the corpus stylistic web application CLiC (Corpus Linguistics in Context). We focus on the ‘quotes’ subsets of the corpora, i.e. text within quotation marks, which is mostly equivalent to direct speech. These quotes subsets are compared across the fiction corpora and with the spoken component of the British National Corpus 1994. The comparisons illustrate how fictional speech-bundles can be described on a continuum from lexical bundles in real spoken language to repeated sequences of words that are specific to individual fictional characters. Typical functions of fictional speech-bundles are the description of interactions and interpersonal relationships of fictional characters. While our approach crucially depends on an innovative corpus linguistic methodology, it also draws on theoretical insights into spoken grammar and characterisation in fiction in order to question traditional notions of realism and authenticity in fictional speech.

Abstract:
The paper presents fiction as a multi-layer unit. On the one hand, there is fictional reality in which characters live and act. On the other hand, there is a specific form of presentation of the plot to the reader, fiction narrative metadiscourse. The paper shows that metadiscourse unites the plot and the author’s metadiscourse into fiction text. Metadiscourse is presented as a two-layer structure, which consists of the inner conceptual layer and the outer layer, which includes the system of language means the choice of which is made on the basis of conceptual frame models. The paper describes frame models of metadiscourse forming the inner structure of the text. They are: the frame model of space and time, the frame model of generalization and the frame model of communicative interaction between the writer and the reader.

The article highlights typological features of the English fanfiction. The work offers a brief outline of history, main forms and modern trends in fan fiction studies as a genre of web literature. The relevance of the study of fan fiction is due, above all, to the fact that these works are a bright example of the so called live language. They reflect all modern language trends, express the musical, literary and film preferences of the society. In addition, fan fiction is an understudied phenomenon that has existed in various forms, but has received the greatest impetus in development only in recent decades. The term fan fiction is defined as a kind of creativity of fans of popular works of art, a derivative literary work based on any original work that uses its ideas of the plot and characters. It is the type of mass literature, created on the basis of a work of art by fans of this work, which do not pursue commercial purposes and are intended for reading by other fans. In the course of the research it has been established that the genre of fanfiction is a group of works written on a certain topic: Action; Adventure; Detective; Romance; Fluff; Humour; Dark; Deathfic; Angst; PWP (Plot, What Plot?). To denote all the other characteristic features of the work, the authors use the term "category". Categories classify works according to certain characteristics, in particular, according to the original source (fanfiction that corresponds to the realities of the original world, Alternative Universe and Crossover); according to the presence of a love line (General audience, Heterosexual, Slash); according to the presence of fictional characters (Original character, Self-insertion). A unique form of fan fiction is Songfic - a work based on a single song, which is quoted by the author in the story. The perspective of this study is the analysis of structural, stylistic and pragmatic features of fan fiction discourse.

Summary This article questions the need for the use of two legal fictions in modern maritime law: that a vessel/ship can in certain instances be treated as an extension of flag state territory; that a vessel/ship is an entity with human attributes. The article addresses the first ‘fiction’ mainly in the context of applicable international law as well as English law; the second ‘fiction’ is addressed mainly in the context of English law although selective reference is made to both primary and secondary legal sources from the United States. The article concludes that the two fictions are only of limited value in modern maritime law.

Early works on fan fiction often dealt with this phenomenon from a gender perspective, as the practice of fan fiction is mostly feminine. The most common source for fan fiction research was fandom material from popular television series at the time. The main focus of the study of fandoms was the practices and values of their participants, the characteristics of the fan as a person, as well as the distinctive features of the culture that the participants of the fandoms created. Fan fiction can be treated as a type of discourse within the scope of Internet linguistics and literary studies. Such main forms of fan fiction as alternative universe, crack, crossover, fix-it, POV, smut, RPF, angst, hurt / comfort, and others are being viewed in the article. Thus, despite huge diversity and versatility of fan fiction forms and genres, it is possible to classify them and analyze their peculiarities. Fan fiction can be regarded as a verbal (sometimes creolized) written message which is shared on the Internet and is aimed, first of all, at the admirers of the source book, film etc. The perspective of this study is the analysis of structural, stylistic and pragmatic features of fan fiction discourse.

Critical thinking about the English-Canadian and Quebec cinemas has focused lo a large degree on the realist tendencies of our fiction filmmaking-tendencies, it is argued, which fiction filmaking has, historically inherited from Canadian documentary film practices. But in recent fiction filmmaking, Canadian filmmakers have moved beyond social realism. Indeed, the emergence in English-Canada and Quebec of filmmaking that is metafictional and pararealist — in films like Léa Pool's La Femme de l'hôtel, Bruce McDonald's Roadkill and Patricia Rozema's White Room — gives us occasion not only to rethink the criteria that have been used to identify "canonic" film, but more importantly to see how these self-conscious fictional strategies, which initially seem to reject the norms of social realism, are in fact part of an ongoing re-examination of the limits of fiction.

Abstract This article argues that, since the turn of the twenty-first century, fiction in Canada – whether by English-Canadian, Québécois, or Indigenous writers – has seen a re-emergence in the apocalyptic genre. While apocalyptic fiction also gained critical attention during the twentieth century, this initial wave was tied to disenfranchised, marginalized figures, excluded as failures in their attempts to reach a promised land. As a result, fiction at that time – and perhaps equally so in the divided English-Canadian and Québécois canons – was chiefly a (post)colonial, nationalist project. Yet, apocalyptic fiction in Canada since 2000 has drastically changed. 9/11, rapid technological advancements, a growing climate crisis, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission: these changes have all marked the fictions of Canada in terms of futurities. This article thus examines three novels – English-Canadian novelist Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven (2014), Indigenous writer Thomas King’s The Back of the Turtle (2014), and Québécois author Nicolas Dickner’s Apocalypse for Beginners (2010) – to discuss the ways in which they work to bring about the destruction of nationalism in Canada through the apocalyptic genre and affectivity to envision new futures.

The article offers a brief overview of research aspects of fan fiction, explores the genre characteristics and criteria of 100 fan fictions based on “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen, and highlights the results of implementing fan fiction into the curriculum at Uzhhorod National University. The fan fictions, created between 2005 and 2024, were analyzed for their completeness, volume, genre, accessibility, and connection to the original text (canon). The findings suggest a need for more detailed genre classifications to accommodate the diverse varieties created by fan fiction authors. The integration of “Pride and Prejudice” fan fiction into the English language curriculum at Uzhhorod National University resulted in increased student engagement, improved language skills, enriched cultural understanding, valuable interdisciplinary insights, and strengthened collaborative learning. This innovative approach not only made language learning more effective but also fostered a deeper appreciation for literature and its contemporary relevance.

AbstractScholarship has often considered the concept of fiction a modern phenomenon. But the Old English Boethius teaches us that medieval people could certainly tell that a fictional story was a lie, although it was hard for them to explain why it was all right that it was a lie—this is the problem the Old English Boethius addresses for the first time in the history of the English language. In translating Boethius's sixth-century Consolation of Philosophy, the ninth-century Old English Boethius offers explanatory comments on its source's narrative exempla drawn from classical myth. While some of these comments explain stories unfamiliar to early medieval English audiences, others consider how such “false stories” may be read and experienced by those properly prepared to encounter them. In so doing, the Old English Boethius must adopt and adapt a terminology for fiction that is unique in the extant corpus of Old English writing.

The current study explores emergent discourse styles in English-language Pakistani fiction using multiple levels of analysis. The modern discourse styles in Pakistani English-language fiction have been explored using the "Corpus Stylistics" methodology and computational tools. In the past, the quantitative research on Pakistani fiction in English as a whole has hardly ever examined the entire collection of fundamental language elements. The current study is ground-breaking in that it has assembled a sizable corpus of Pakistani fiction in English for a specific goal based on a sizable collection of novels and short tales. Applying statistical factor analysis, the whole collection of essential lexico-grammatical elements presents in fictionized writing in Pakistan has been taken into consideration. The current research introduces innovative discourse styles and labels them as: "Expression of Thought vs. Descriptive Discourse Production," "Context-oriented Discourse," "Concrete Action Discourse vs. Abstract Exposition," and "Narrative vs. Dialogic Discourse." it does this by marking information from the large substantial corpus of English-language Pakistani fiction. V. S. Naipaul is an eminent literary figure in the field of modern fiction, non-fiction, and travelogue writing in English literature. He earned a number of literary awards and accolades, including the covetous Nobel Prize and Booker Prize. His non-fiction e.g., An Area of Darkness, India: A Wounded Civilization, The Loss of El Dorado, India: A Million Mutinies Now and Beyond Belief are a realistic portrayal of the various types of religion, culture, customs, and people of India. As an author, the main purpose of V. S. Naipaul is to deliver the truth; because poets are the unacknowledged legislators of mankind. The fact that V. S. Naipaul has presented in his non-fiction is more authentic and realistic than that of his fiction. Nonetheless, it is fictional work that is elaborately explored, discussed, and analyzed in abundance. On the other hand, his non-fiction, by and far, remains aloof. In the last few decades, non-fictions are also taking the ground strongly. Now non-fiction writings are being analyzed, elucidated, and explored based on various theoretical principles of literary criticism. V. S. Naipaul carried the new genre to new heights and achievements. He is of Indian descent and known for his pessimistic works set in developing countries. He visited India several times, like Pearl S. Buck and E. M. Forster. So, his presentation of Indian religion, society, culture, and politics are very realistic. His vision and ideas are very close to the modern thoughts and visions of both the east and the west.

Abstract:
This study examined the translation style of David Hawkes and the Yangs (Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang) in their English translations of Hongloumeng, a Chinese Great Classic, by considering the hybrid register nature of fiction. The activity index, a measure from quanti-tative linguistics that calculates the ratio of verb occurrences to the sum of verb and adjec-tive occurrences, was used to analyze the active-descriptive equilibrium patterns across the two Hongloumeng translations and the two sub-registers of fiction. Our analysis is based on a corpus that separates fictional narration and dialogues from the first 80 chapters of the two Hongloumeng translations. The study found that, overall, dialogues tend to be more active than narration and Hawkes’ translation was characterized by a greater level of activity com-pared to the Yangs’ version. Subsequent analysis revealed that Hawkes' translation dis-played a higher level of activity in fictional dialogues while demonstrating a more descrip-tive approach in fictional narration. The results suggest that Hawkes’ translation adheres more closely to the typical stylistic conventions of fiction writing in English. The stylistic differences between the two translations of Hongloumeng are believed to be a result of a combination of factors, including the translators’ language and cultural backgrounds and their choice of translation strategies and approaches, which may have contributed to the var-iations in the final translated products.

In the course of the research it has been established that the genre of fanfiction is a group of works written on a certain topic: Action; Adventure; Detective; Romance; Fluff; Humour; Dark; Deathfic; Angst; PWP (Plot, What Plot?). The analysis of the linguistic features of the nominative system of English fanfiction showed that it performs a number of important functions: communicative, nominative, emotional-evaluative, expressive, phatic, signalling/identification. The most significant quality/property of fan fiction is the “secondary nature” of fan creativity, in connection with which one of the key research tasks is the study of the relationship between the original text and fan fiction. It is interesting that fanfiction from the standpoint of literary studies/linguistics is initially evaluated as a phenomenon that belongs to the lowest manifestations of paraliterature and therefore does not deserve serious attention. However, determining the place and status of fan fiction in the modern speech process is one of the tasks, the solution of which is relevant for researchers. The perspective of this study is the analysis of structural, stylistic and pragmatic features of fan fiction discourse.

ABSTRACT: This article reconsiders Samuel R. Delany's theory of science fiction as a form of language in order to develop the notion that science fiction is a method of making meaning and reading texts. Three stories by the Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges, "The Aleph," "The Library of Babel," and "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius," are read as science fiction to demonstrate how the method functions. Borges's ambiguous relationship with science fiction during his lifetime is well-documented, but no previous study of Borges as a science-fiction writer exists in English. The notion of science fiction as a way of reading enables a reading that treats the elements of textual playfulness that make Borges's texts so beloved throughout literary studies as science fictional, because they encourage the reader to reconstruct an alternate world around the text and create a comprehensive theory of how that world works.

Abstract As an essential part of the “Globalization of Chinese Culture” strategy, the translation of Chinese fiction into English has gained more significance and deserves more academic attention. Through making a survey of Chinese fiction in English translation from 1978 to 2018, the article not only presents different trajectories of the development of Chinese fiction in English translation in mainland China and the English-speaking countries but also shows that different canons of Chinese fiction in English translation have been formed in the course of this development. Reasons for the formation of the prevailing canon(s) are explored and explained from perspectives taking into account concrete factors such as ideology, poetics and patronage as well as influences of the literary award mechanism. Based on this description and explanation, the article concludes with a few suggestions for the future development of cultural activity of introducing Chinese literature into English-speaking countries.

This study aimed at assessing reading rates for learners in grade seven English second language (ESL) in Morogoro region, Tanzania. A total of 220 participants were randomly selected and assigned two grade appropriate English texts to read so as determine their reading rates. Fluency scale test was used to assess pupils’ reading fluency rates and the data was statistically analysed using SPSS software. It was necessary to asses pupils’ reading rates in the study context because there are no established fluency rate norms set for grade seven pupils in the country. In this case the current study serves as a reference for improvement. Results show that grade seven pupils in Morogoro region had an average reading fluency rate of 101words per minute (WPM) for fiction text and 95WPM for non-fiction text. The difference in the two texts can be due to the length of words and difficulty level in non-fiction text against fiction text. The scored rate is below the adopted benchmarks which implies that these pupils are at risk in reading fluency, consequently, calling for immediate interventions.

Learning to read is inseparable from teaching to read. The foundational assumption of the common core state standards initiative (CCSSI) master plan in the English language arts is that its method for teaching reading will eventuate in students' learning to read (as well as speak and write) better. Teachers and students come at their shared task from different perspectives, but both are presumed to be working in the same project of engaging something unproblematically called “language,” the program's middle name (as it is of the MLA). The Common Core's framers assume a correspondence between the phenomenon they call language in their methodological recommendations and language as it is used by them and their students—and everyone else who speaks English—in the world outside the classroom. The standards are based on a theory of language.

This research attempted to conduct an in-depth analysis of the text-forming elements based on the fact that cohesive devices are insufficiently treated in the Albanian language, although considerable research and publications have been made in other languages. This study aims to bring evidence in recognizing, determining, and categorizing the structures of ellipsis and substitution which perform in English and Albanian. Comparing these important elements of grammatical cohesion in two languages will bring light upon the differences and similarities between the two languages. It will also show how frequently they are used in English and Albanian. Particularly, the aim is to show how these two mechanisms enable the avoidance of repetition, either by choosing other short words, phrases, and clauses or by removal of words, phrases, and clauses. This study involved samples of fiction and non-fiction texts of English and Albanian language, consisting of two novels and two daily newspapers. The findings of the research indicate that in fiction texts, ellipsis is used more in the Albanian language rather than in English whereas substitution prevails more in English than Albanian. Ellipsis is used more in the Albanian language rather than in English in non-fiction texts too. Nevertheless, the frequency of substitution seems to be the same in both languages with a total of 4 items in English and 3 items in Albanian.

The paper deals with a very important aspect of communication – the fictional communication between the author of emotive prose and the reader. The research is based on the widely accepted thesis of a communicative nature of narrative. The author of the paper uses a popular nowadays term metadiscourse. The paper studies the diachronic aspect of conceptual-metaphoric representation in English fiction. The research shows that the conceptual metaphor is presented differently in the explicit and in the implicit dialogue of the author with the reader. The conceptual metaphors JOURNEY, BUILDING and GASTRONOMIC METAPHOR are characteristic of the explicit dialogue, whereas CONTAUNER mainly appears in the implicit dialogue.

Indian English literature began as an interesting by-product of an eventful encounter in the late eighteenth century between a vigorous and enterprising Britain and a stagnant and chaotic India. As a result of this encounter as F.W. Bain puts it ‘India a withered trunk… suddenly shot out with foreign foliage’. The first problem that confronts the historian of Indian English literature is to define its nature. The question has been made rather complicated owing to two factors: first this body of writing has, from time to time, been designated variously as ‘Indo-Anglian literature’, ‘Indian Writing in English’ and ‘Indo-English literature’. Secondly the failure to make clear-cut distinctions has also often led to confusion between categories such as ‘Anglo-Indian literature’, literature in the Indian languages translated into English and original composition in English by Indians. Thus, in his A Sketch of Anglo-Indian Literature (1908), E.F. Oaten considers the poetry of Henry Derizio as a part of ‘Anglo-Indian literature’ the same critic in his essay on Anglo-Indian literature in the Cambridge of English Literature includes Toru Dutt, Sarojini Naidu, Rabindranath Tagore and Arvindo Ghose among ‘Anglo-Indian writers along with F.W. Bain and F.A. Steel.

Роль и значение английской литературы в современном мире не исчерпаны. Ее нельзя ассоциировать исключительно с историей культуры. Английская литература всегда была созвучна духу народа, ритму народных движений, борьбе за либеральные ценности. Не случайно сегодня одним из самых актуальных понятий в гуманитарных науках является понятие «другой». Английская литература остается «иной» по отношению к миру в целом и продолжает проповедовать те истины, которые филогенетически сформировали английский менталитет. В данной статье показано, что понятия «другой» и «толерантность» следует рассматривать в тесной связи. В литературоведении, как известно, существует термин остранение, введенный формалистами. В свете остранения, воспринимаемого не как отдельный прием, а как сущность художественного произведения, этот вид искусства вполне можно рассматривать как разновидность отражения или рефлексивного мышления. Мир, созданный художником слова, основан на бесконечности жизни, но его творческое воображение преобразует эту бесконечность жизни в соответствии с собственным видением. Образы, созданные писателем, также имеют прототипы в реальности, но как продукт творческого воображения или творческого мышления они могут быть гораздо более точными, адекватными отражениями действительности, чем мертвые слепки. the article is devoted to the role of English literature, its significant influence on the formation of civilization. The role and significance of English literature in the modern world has not been exhausted. It cannot be associated solely with cultural history. English literature has always been in tune with the spirit of the people with the rhythm of popular movements, with the struggle for liberal values. It is no coincidence that today one of the most relevant concepts in humanities is the concept of “other.” English literature remains “different” to the world as a whole and continues to preach those truths that have phylogenetically shaped the English mentality. This article shows that the concepts of “other” and “tolerance” should be considered in close connection. In literary criticism, as is known, there is a term defamiliarization, introduced by the formalists. In the light of defamiliarization, perceived not as a separate technique, but as the essence of fiction, this type of art may well be regarded as a kind of reflection or reflective thinking. The world created by the artist of words is based on the infinity of life, but his creative imagination transforms this infinity of life in accordance with his own vision. The images created by the writer also have prototypes in reality, but as a product of creative imagination, or creative thinking, they can be much more accurate, adequate reflections of reality than dead casts.

This study aims to highlight the utilization of literary genre as a well-liked method for instructing both language skills (that is to say, writing, reading, speaking, and listening) and language fields (that are grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary). Why employing literary textbooks in foreign language classrooms and the main motives for choosing appropriate fictional texts in these classrooms are emphasized to make the reader acquainted with the motivating incentives and standards for foreign language teachers’ employing and picking erudite textbooks. Additionally, the teaching of language skills and literary genre gains benefits of diverse fields of literature (like drama, poems, tragedy and tales) to language teaching and to several difficulties met by language teachers in the sphere of instructing English using fiction (i.e. shortage of training in the field of literature teaching English as a Second English and Teaching English as a Foreign Language curriculums, deficiency of precise aims describing the function of fiction in English as a Foreign Language and English as a Second Language, foreign language teachers’ not possessing the experience and preparation in literature, and lack of suitable teaching tools to be utilized by foreign language teachers in a class milieu) are taken into consideration.

With English as a lingua franca in mind, it has become essential for undergraduate students to acquire the English language. Additionally, undergraduate students are expected to acquire a repertoire of critical thinking skills for lifelong learning. Inspired by the need to augment mastery of English as a foreign language (EFL) whilst at the same time enhancing critical thinking on the part of EFL learners, the research study this paper portrays was conducted for one academic semester involving a number of students at the institution where the author of this paper works. The research aimed to investigate whether using English novels; novellas; and short stories for teaching purposes would have any significant impacts on subjects’ attitudes towards using literary texts for enhancement of both critical thinking and EFL skills. To achieve the intended aim, the researcher used eight English short stories and one novella in class besides assigning one English novel as extensive reading, while teaching the course Communication Skills during the implementation stage. The researcher also administered a pre-post questionnaire with the aim of measuring subjects’ attitudes towards utilizing novels; novellas; and short stories as a means for fostering both critical thinking and EFL skills. Based on the statistical tests, there were significant differences in favor of the post questionnaire regarding the majority of the questionnaire’s items. Based on this study, it can be concluded that English novels; novellas; and short stories have a significant role to play in relation to developing critical thinking and EFL skills.
