Royce, William. "An Evaluation of the Habits of Mind Character Education Program." Thesis, NSUWorks, 2015. https://nsuworks.nova.edu/fse_etd/71.

Full text
Abstract:
This program evaluation, which used the context-input-process-product program evaluation model (Stufflebeam, 2003, 2010), was implemented within a suburban elementary school. The problem addressed through the evaluation was that the Habits of Mind program (Costa & Kallick, 2000a, 2000b, 2009b), which was implemented as the character education program at the study site in the 2008-2009 academic year, had not been evaluated. By conducting the study, the researcher evaluated the program to determine its effectiveness in promoting academic achievement and appropriate school behaviors. By conducting the evaluation, the researcher identified 4 findings suggesting that the (a) need exists to ensure the fidelity with which the intervention is implemented, (b) academic performance of students in Grades 3 and 4 improved while the intervention was ongoing, (c) behavioral performance of students in kindergarten through Grade 3 improved during program implementation, and (d) viability of sustaining and implementing a character development program with integrity will require the concerted effort of all staff members. Recommendations for educational practice are to (a) continue implementing the Habits of Mind program (Costa & Kallick, 2000a, 2000b, 2009b), (b) include members of the support team and parents in a training event during the present school year, and (c) provide ongoing training to teachers as well as recognition of related practices noted through supervisory observations. It is further recommended that the school principal identify a viable approach for assisting members of the school leadership team in the development of skills for recognizing and managing the conflict presently occurring among teachers. It is also recommended that members of the leadership team address the stated concerns of teachers in their questionnaire responses. Two recommendations for future research were identified. First, it is recommended that additional research on Habits of Mind at nearby elementary schools be conducted to determine the integral processes through which the program is implemented within other settings. Second, it is recommended that the level of student understanding involving the 16 components of Habits of Mind be identified and then the findings be used to guide future program development.

Margeson, Alana. "Grade 9 Teachers' Perceptions of Habits of Mind and Academic Success." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6237.

Abstract:
Grade 9 students' academic failure has been documented to lead to future academic failure at the secondary level. Research has shown that lack of persistence and problem solving behaviors when dealing with adversity have multiple consequences, including low self-esteem and dropout. The purpose of this qualitative exploratory case study was to examine Grade 9 teachers' perceptions related to the use of Habits of Mind, a program designed to address the dispositions of thinkers when faced with problems such as resilience or persistence. Guided by Bandura's social cognitive learning theory, which holds that environment relates directly to behaviors and feelings of self-efficacy, the study was designed to examine teachers' perceptions regarding Habits of Mind and academic success. The research questions addressed teachers' perceptions about utilizing specific habits of mind to support students' academic success as well as how teachers' instructional designs incorporate Habits of Mind. Interviews with 10 9th grade teachers and surveys were used to gather data. Data analysis was conducted in a process of pre-coding, ongoing coding, and development of themes from the data. Results showed that teachers perceived habits of mind as necessary for success, handling adversity, and adapting to life beyond high school. They also indicated that the desire for purposeful collegial interactions most effectively embeds habits of mind instruction within and beyond classrooms. Implications for social change include maximizing students' problem solving strategies and knowledge related to dealing with adversity, including failure, in order to help prepare students for successful post-secondary academic experiences, employment, and productive, responsible citizenship.

Abstract:

Public polling and anecdotal evidence suggests that the general public greatly values music education. I argue that this is not because of content, discipline-specific skills like reading music notation or playing the trumpet, but because of the generalizable habits of mind, or broad thinking dispositions, that teachers teach in ensembles. Through analysis of systematic observation and interview data from multiple rehearsals of six band, choir and orchestra ensembles, eight Ensemble Habits of Mind emerged: Evaluate, Express, Imagine, Listen, Notice, Participate in Community, Persist, and Set Goals & Be Prepared. Using methodology similar to that of parallel work identifying Studio Habits of Mind in visual arts education (Hetland et al., 2013), this study shows many similarities between habits of mind in the two disciplines. However, two habits of mind that were specifically sought out in observations because they are frequently reported in advocacy arguments, Use Creativity and Recognize More than One Correct Answer, were not observed even under broad inclusion criteria. Suggestions are given for the practical application of these findings and discussion of how this framework can simultaneously support the good thinking happening in traditional large ensembles while bolstering rationale that informal music learning and other means of student-centered music making should be included in music programs in order to advance students’ creative thinking and tolerance for ambiguity

Badenhorst, Douw Hendrik. "Technology teachers’ disposition towards critical thinking in terms of their habits of mind." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/80461.

Full text
Abstract:
The South African Department of Basic Education (2011) has articulated the need for learners to think critically. The development of critical thinking skills has therefore been explicitly included in various education policies, such as the National Curriculum Statement Grades R-12. Technology, a relatively new subject in South African schools, provides many opportunities to foster critical thinking skills through, for example, problem solving. Technology offers a wide spectrum of problems – ranging from well-structured to illstructured problems. Well-structured problems are constrained problems with convergent solutions and are the most commonly found problems in schools and universities, but ill-structured problems have multiple possible solutions and solutions paths, which often lead to uncertainty about, for example, the concepts, rules, and principles required to solve the problem. This is particularly true with regard to teaching technology, where there is the added complexity resultant from the designing of solutions (artefacts) to ill-structured problems. This calls for teachers with certain habits of mind, who will be able to nurture a positive disposition toward critical thinking in learners. Facione (2000) points out that engendering the desire to use critical thinking as a means of problem solving prepares the ground for teaching and learning critical thinking skills. Teachers, however, must be willing to use these opportunities to cultivate critical thinking skills in the classroom. While much research has been done on Critical Thinking skills, there is a paucity of literature about teachers’ disposition toward Critical Thinking. This study sought to investigate technology teachers’ disposition toward critical thinking with reference to their habits of mind. Profiling technology teachers’ disposition toward critical thinking can enhance our understanding of the extent to which they are positively or negatively disposed toward critical thinking (CT) in terms of their habits of mind. Such understanding can inform, inter alia, teacher training and curricula in order to reciprocally enhance critical thinking skills and the required habits of mind needed to teach technology The study used a survey design to investigate South African Technology teachers’ disposition toward CT. Grades 8, and 9 technology teachers were targeted; they were invited via an email to participate in the study in which standard ethical protocols were followed. A link in the email directed the participants to an online survey collecting data with 42 statements. Participants were asked to rate their level of agreement with each statement on a six-point scale. The statements were derived from the seven habits of mind as identified by Facione. These are: Self-confidence, Inquisitiveness, Systematicity, Analyticity, Truth-seeking, Open-mindedness and Maturity of Judgment. Half of the statements were formulated to express a clearly favourable disposition toward CT, while the other half were framed to be clearly unfavourable. The frequency of responses in terms of each scale for each statement was counted in order to reveal trends regarding their habits of mind. The research findings reveal that this sample seems to be positively disposed toward CT. The habits of mind that recorded the highest scores were Self-confidence, Inquisitiveness, and Systematicity. The habits of mind that recorded the lowest scores were Open-mindedness and Maturity of Judgment. Females outperformed males in four of the seven habits of mind. Male and female participants scored an equal balance percentage toward Self-confidence and male participants outperformed females in Truth-seeking and Analyticity. Further research is needed to investigate how the disposition and practice of technology teachers encourage critical thinking skills in the classroom.

Abstract:
This study examines the use of Studio Thinking's Studio Habits of Mind (Hetland, Winner, Veenema & Sheridan, 2007) as a framework for curriculum design. In order to compare the ideas with other current art education theories, I conduct a literature review that identifies types of thinking accessed in the visual arts classroom. Through the comparison of Hetland et. al.'s Habits of Mind with those cited by current researchers, I discuss the relevance of the Studio Habits of Mind and propose an additional Habit of Mind: Investigate. In order to explore the use of these Habits as a framework for curriculum design, I design several lessons for a local after-school program using an objectives-based lesson template. The difficulty of applying this framework to an existing template indicates the need for a new unit/lesson plan template formatted specifically to a mind-centered approach. I present my design for a new unit template, lesson template and examples. The findings of this research point to a move in art education towards a mind-centered approach in the visual arts classroom and the use of a mind-centered template for unit and lesson planning.

Abstract:
This paper presents research findings related to the human habits of using digital devices. Through theoretical research and empirical fieldwork, it’s clarified that there is a significant concern regarding how we use digital devices and there is health implication that follow. From this baseline this paper presents an application solution designed from the methods of gamification and persuasive computing, concepts where user motivation is a core for success. Therefore, we present a solution based on a social community because from the research and empirical work a community should be a good platform and the social interactions can provide a large amount of the motivation that has been deemed so relevant.

Chase, Melissa W. "The Relationship of Mind Styles, Consumer Decision-Making Styles, and Shopping Habits of Beginning College Students." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27824.

Full text
Abstract:
The foundation for this study is based on prior research (Sproles & Sproles, 1990) that determined that learning styles are significantly related to consumer decision-making styles. Decision making involves a process of cognitive learning. Since the study was published, other studies have investigated these consumer decision-making styles. However, no additional studies have further investigated the relationship between learning styles and consumer decision-making styles for college students, especially first-year, first semester college students. Numerous studies have documented that students enter college as consumers but may lack basic knowledge and skills to make consumer decisions and avoid potential debt. The focus of the current study was to determine whether a relationship exists between beginning college studentsâ self-reported mind styles, consumer decision-making styles, and shopping habits. To investigate this relationship, a purposive sample was targeted consisting of first-year, first semester college students. Three instruments were administered: the Gregorc Style Delineator, the Consumer Styles Inventory, and a Demographic Survey. A Chi-Square Test of Independence showed that there is a significant relationship between gender and self-reported shopping habits. Females tend to self-report purchases of clothing more frequently than males. Males tend to self-report purchases of food away from home and gas/auto expenses more frequently than females. No significant relationship was found between studentsâ perception of family income and self-reported shopping habits, suggesting that these students purchase consumer goods frequently regardless of their perceived family income. A Chi-Square Test of Independence also revealed a significant relationship between gender and self-reported, dominant, Gregorc mind styles. Females were more likely than males to self-report their dominant mind styles as Abstract Random. Males were more likely than females to self-report their dominant mind style as Concrete Random. Although the current studyâ s results did not support multiple consumer decision-making styles from previous studies using the Consumer Styles Inventory, an exploratory factor analysis revealed one, overall consumer decision-making style, Recreational/Hedonistic. A Mann-Whitney Rank Sum Test showed that there is a significant relationship between gender and the Recreational/Hedonistic consumer decision-making style. Females tend to be more recreational shoppers than males. A summary, discussion of the results, and recommendations for further research, practice, policy, and families are proposed.

Shumway, Anika. "Experiential Education in the Writing Classroom: Developing Habits for Citizenship." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2021. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8910.

Full text
Abstract:
As political polarity and social divisiveness increase in the United States, more organizations and scholars are calling on institutions of higher education to rise to the occasion and incorporate into their objectives the development of competent citizenship (The National Task Force). Writing classrooms are particularly suited to these kinds of objectives as writing already proposes relationships between rhetor and audience that have ethical dimensions and require mutual honesty, accountability, and respect (Duffy, "The Good Writer"). Additionally, the Framework for Success, a document that has become central to shaping the goals of writing classrooms, articulates habits of mind, like openness and engagement, that lend themselves to healthy, productive citizenship and civic interactions. However, the inherence of these qualities and potential in writing classrooms is not always recognized or actualized. Instructors need a reliable pedagogical framework to guide their objectives and choices so that students develop citizenship competencies through their writing experiences. The theory of experiential learning (EL) is one promising avenue for such a pedagogical method. This thesis explains keys to understanding EL theory and implementing them in traditional classrooms and details lived examples from two classrooms that illustrate how EL in practice can help students develop habits of mind that in turn contribute to citizenship competencies.

Abstract:
Thesis (MEd (Education))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016.
Current insights into the South African education crisis suggest that emphasis needs to be placed on developing teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKfT) through ongoing professional development. Aiming to provide insight into teacher professional development, this research describes an initiative undertaken by a group of Mathematics teachers who formed a Community of Practice at their school. Through the implementation of Habits of Mind that promotes Relational Understanding, these teachers attempt to improve the teaching and learning of Mathematics at their school, and further their professional development. A qualitative phenomenological design of inquiry was conducted to describe the teachers’ experiences when implementing Habits of Mind in their teaching. Group interviews, individual interviews and documentary sources were used to gain a rich description of the lived experiences of these teachers during the research period. To analyse the data a combination of Giorgi’s phenomenological model and the interconnected model of professional growth was used. Results indicate three insights into teacher professional development: (1) Communities of Practice promote the sharing and development of MKfT though the mechanism of collaboration; (2) Teachers are challenged when implementing intervention strategies as firstly their learners are challenged in their literacy ability which limits their articulation in Mathematics lessons, and secondly they are faced with time constraints imposed by workload demands; (3) The attempt to implement intervention strategies within a Community of Practice, despite being challenging, encourages reflective practice which informs individuals’ professional practice and supports ongoing professional development.

Abstract:
Code reuse has the benefits of saving time and resources but poses a risk whenattempting to tailor copied code for a new purpose or in cases when such copies arebuggy or otherwise faulty. In the field of data science, the web application JupyterNotebook is a popular tool for creating computational notebooks, documentscontaining both plain text and code snippets, many of which are publicly available oncode hosting sites such as GitHub. This thesis describes the acquisition ofapproximately 2.6 million computational notebooks and analysis of this data set.By hashing the contents of every code snippet, using the MD5 hashing algorithm, cloned snippets were found through snippets producing identical hashes. Bysubsequently mapping the snippets to their corresponding notebooks, the relativeoriginality of a notebook could be determined. This analysis shows that nearly 95% ofnotebooks are written in some version of Python. Furthermore, nearly 54% ofnotebooks in the data set are comprised of code blocks also found in othernotebooks and, on average, approximately 70% of the code in any given notebookis copied from elsewhere.

Abstract:
Computer-assisted learning is older than Turing machines, and constantly evolves as technology improves. While some teachers are resistant to using technology in the classroom, “e-learning” techniques are becoming more common in almost every school, from K-12 to universities. As technology becomes more widespread, it becomes crucial to examine the various methodologies of computer-assisted learning and find the techniques that are most effective. This paper explores the effectiveness of one such methodology, spaced repetition. This technique applies to homework assignments available to students online. We include an exploration of several existing apps that use this technique, and introduce our own novel app, Polycommit. Polycommit was developed for use with several Cal Poly classes and was deployed during the first half of the Spring 2017 quarter. With careful attention to user feedback, we created a tool that motivated students to form better study habits. While our results do not show statistically significant improvement to student grades, this tool gives insight into how modern technology and gamification can be leveraged to create an engaging app that encourages positive study habits, and gives us a platform to develop future applications concerning gamification.

Educational Leadership
Ed.D.
Accreditors and administrators have begun to focus on general education with an eye to improvement. One of the most valued, but difficult to assess, learning outcomes in general education is critical thinking. Critical thinking is thought to play a role in student engagement and positive student learning outcomes. This study examined students' acquisition of critical thinking skills in a required general education great books course at a large, mid-Atlantic, Research I university with a high transfer-in population. Student interviews, class observations and document analysis were employed in the study. Specific attention was paid to dialogic learning, as Vygotsky's theory of social learning and the theory of student engagement underpinned the study. This study found that critical thinking learning goals were not communicated to the students explicitly through the syllabus. Only 20 percent of the students in the class reported acquiring critical thinking skills. All of those students were female transfer students. Many students described the class as outside their primary educational interests. Those who acquired critical thinking skills were more likely to be active participants in the class, value professor-student conferences and have a strong academic support network. Social interaction contributed to students' acquisition of critical thinking skills in this class. Future assessment of critical thinking will depend on a clearer definition of the concept. General education programs and courses that link social interaction and the acquisition of critical thinking skills are worthy of further study.

There are a number of factors that influence an individual's ability to design. Designers vary by characteristics of their designs. Some product designers may be very practical, while others attempt to induce surprise and delight in their target user. Even when selecting what design to move forward with, designers' personalities and their classification as either satisfiers or maximizers greatly impacts their final designs. We surveyed a number of students from MIT class 2.97, Designing for People, in order to gauge their design habits. The data we extracted provided us with information on their design experience and comfort, their attitudes towards surprising designs, and their characterization as satisfiers or maximizers. Due to the relatively small sample size, we did not find any overarching trends, but the results do establish some correlations between self-reported confidence in personal designs and their potential to surprise the user.

When you are creating new software today, more often than not you will use API’s. Users choosing between different API’s would probably look at functionality but also accessibility and ease of use. It would therefore seem motivated for API providers to create usable and accessible API’s.This thesis is about the things that make an API more usable, and then those things are used in practice to increase the usability of CloudMe’s API. CloudMe’s core API is documented to increase usability and a wrapper for the API is developed to allow people more ways to use CloudMe’s service. The APIwrapper is created in Java and was developed thoroughly with regards to usability.

Abstract:
Nyckelord: e-handel, smartphone, mobil e-handel, persondator
The purpose of this paper is to identify consumer e-commerce preferences but also to trace any differences regarding consumer’s preferences via smartphone or PC. The paper identifies e-commerce as a phenomenon that is becoming stronger and that is going to rival the traditional e-commerce. The goal of this paper is to identify consumer’s e-commerce preferences. To solve our issue we will use different methods. Based on our studies, together with our selected methods, we found that consumers prefer sitting at a personal computer with the consumption of a commodity. It is linked to the consumer wants to sit in their homes where they quietly can make their purchase. Another significant factor is that the screen size is too small on the smartphone. One detail that consumer’s mention is that the interface on a smartphone is worse than on a PC.Key words: e-commerce, smartphone, mobile commerce, Personal Computer

Multi-sensory interaction with material is the source of embodied design knowledge in the process of creative design. Through bodily engagement with material in the process of making, the integration of thinking and doing - or mind and hand - results in generating iterative design solutions. While compute raided design (CAD) tools have brought various benefits to the field of design, such as speed and accuracy in modeling, their detachment from physical world eliminates the multi-sensory interaction between designer and material. I argue that in order to overcome the separation of design and making in the context of computer-aided design tools, we need to rethink the interfaces by which designers interact with the digital world. If we aim to bring back material interaction to the computer-aided design process, the material itself should become the interface between designer and computer. I propose Augmented Materials - defined as physical materials embedded with digital and computational capabilities- to fill the gap between physical and digital model making. By embedding functional components such as sensors, actuators and microcontrollers, directly within modules of physical interface, an integrated system emerges that can offer computational capabilities such as speed and precision of modeling, while allowing designers to engage in a hands-on multi-sensory interaction with material. I implement my thesis by introducing NURBSforms, a modular shape-changing interface that lets designers create NURBS-based curves and free-form surfaces in a physical form, just as easily as they do in CAD software. Each module of NURBSforms represents a base curve with variable curvature, with the amount of its curvature being controlled by the designer, and represented through real-time actuation of material. NURBSforms bridges between digital and physical model making by bringing digital capabilities such as such as real-time transformation, programmability, repeatability and reversibility to the physical modality. I implemented two modalities of interaction with NURBSforms, one using direct manipulation, and the other using gestural control. I conclude this work by evaluating NURBSforms interface based on two sets of user studies, and propose potential future developments of the project. My thesis contributes to the fields of Design and Human Computer Interaction by introducing Augmented Materials as a framework for creating computer-aided design interfaces that integrate physical and digital modalities. The NURBSforms interface can be further developed to be used as a pervasive design interface as well as a research and education tool. The software, hardware and fabrication techniques developed during implementation of NURBSforms can be applied to the research projects in the fields of architecture, product design, and HCI.

Abstract:

The substitution of electrical energy for gasoline as a transportation fuel is an initiative both with a long history, and one made both pressing and important in today's policy discussion by renewed interest in plug-in vehicles. The research presented in this dissertation attempts to inform the policy discussion for governments, for electric utilities, for the makers of electric cars, and for the industries developing and planning charging infrastructure. To that end, the impacts of variations to several possible system design parameters, on several metrics of evaluation, are assessed. The analysis is based on a dataset of vehicle trips collected by Georgia Institute of Technology, tracking almost 500 vehicles that commute to, from or within the Atlanta city center, comprising Atlanta `commuter-shed'. By assuming that this dataset of trips defines the desired travel behavior of urban and suburban American populations, the effects of travel electrification in personal vehicles can be assessed.

Several significant and novel findings have emerged from this research. These include the conclusion that at-work charging is not necessarily the logical next step beyond home-charging, as it will in general add little to the substitutability of electric vehicles. In contrast, high power en-route charging, combined with modest power home charging is shown to be surprisingly effective, potentially requiring of EV drivers a total time spent at en-route recharging stations similar to that for liquid fueled cars. From the vehicle marketing perspective, a quantification of the hybrid household effect, wherein multi-vehicle households own one EV, showed that about a quarter of all households could adopt a vehicle with 80 miles of range with no changes to travel patterns. Of interest to grid management, this research showed an apparent maximum fleet-wide load from unregulated charging of about 1 kW per vehicle, regardless of EVSE power or EV battery size. This contrasts with a potential late night load spike an order of magnitude higher under certain time-of-use charging algorithm implementations. Finally, an EVSE and EV power capacity of 10-12 kW was shown to be a likely optimum if grid services from modulated charging are being considered.

Koutsoukos, Georgios. "Mentality patterns : recurring turns of mind as first-class concerns in software engineering." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/10123.

Full text
Abstract:
A wide variety of sources indicate the existence of certain recurring turns of mind, usually referred to as mentality, that have significant impact in software engineering practice. Some of those turns of mind are established to the point that certain designations, for instance “not invented here” or “us and them”, have already been attributed to them. However, whereas agreement on existence is clear, there is significant ambiguity or even inconsistency in the way those are discussed and considered. In other words, there is a noticeable absence of a standardised and systematic means to define, characterize and communicate such recurring mentality elements. Consequently, existing knowledge and practices on the matter are kept on people’s minds or used in narrow contexts. Moreover, very little has been published on methods that can assist colleagues to approach the subject in their work practices in a more organized way. This thesis reports on research performed over several years, from both a researcher and practitioner perspective in the “real-life” field, and makes the following contributions: • It presents the notion of Mentality Pattern as an abstraction and representation primitive through which we can capture, make explicit, systematise and communicate such human-mentality elements. • It uses the primitive to define a Mentality Innovation Sub-process as an organized way to infuse such mentality issues as first-class concerns into software engineering practice. • It provides a support system through which a repository of mentality patterns and associated knowledge and experiences can be built and shared. Results in practice are very encouraging in what concerns the capacity of the Mentality Pattern primitive to organize different perceptions, facilitate the identification of recurring “mentalities” and act as a common communication mechanism. Moreover, there is evidence that for some mentality patterns the sub-process can drive a constructive change in the way people operate in teams. On the other hand, there exist recurring mentalities that are more persistent. Finally, based on relevant findings, this thesis calls for an intensification of research on the mentality phenomenon in software engineering and makes concrete recommendations in that respect.

Harding, Genevieve E. "Developing methods to access sensitive industrial wastewater information in South Africa (with treatment in mind)." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/29446.

Full text
Abstract:
South Africa is a water stressed country, therefore it is important to understand water use and wastewater generation. Previous research and workshops have identified gaps in the characterisation and remediation of wastewaters in South Africa. Wastewater management can take advantage of wastewater as a valuable resource. However, treatment is required to recover this value, while characterisation is required to develop treatments. Yet wastewater characterisation information is often poorly reported. The nature of industrial wastewaters (in terms of volume, location and composition), and the norms of wastewater characterisation reporting (in terms of quality and accessibility) formed the basis for two research questions. A major component of this research was developing methods to access sensitive wastewater information. Relational approaches were based on building relationships through phone calls, emails, meetings and site visits. Formal, legal requests for were made with application in terms if the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA). Even though wastewater information is not confidential, it is not readily accessible. 87 people from 42 companies or institutions were contacted; 14% of interactions lead to shared data or a meeting, and 12% shared resources. Key industries of interest were: pulp and paper, fish processing, power generation, mining and petroleum. Previous estimates of South African industrial wastewater volumes ranged from 70 – 350 Mm3 /annum. The pulp and paper industry contributed between 28 and 43% of this volume; petroleum contributed 9 to 26%. Both industries were located inland and in coastal regions of South Africa. These industries were most concerned with COD. Mining and power generation contributed 10 – 15% and 7 – 14% respectively. These industries were located inland, and were concerned with total dissolved solids, and specifically sulphate, sodium and chlorides. The fish processing industry contributed between 0 and 23% of volumes, depending whether wastewaters released to a marine environment were included. Seven parameters were reported for over half of the streams considered (65 in total). These parameters were: pH, volume, electrical conductivity, nitrogen, sulphate, sodium and COD. Sulphate and sodium were dominant ions. Calcium was not measured, even though discharge limits were listed in environmental licenses. Characterisation information was reported for compliance and not for treatability. The parameters measured should be expanded to include important parameters for treatability. Industry, research institution and governmental bodies can work together to identify such parameters and develop locally relevant treatments. It is recommended that possible synergies between these groupings be enhanced to improve wastewater management. But an atmosphere of trust and transparency is required to facilitate synergistic relationships. The legal framework in South Africa can be used to motivate for transparency with respect to wastewaters.

Abstract:
Sweden is known for being at the forefront of becoming a cashless society. However, cash continues to be an important part of the payment ecosystem butthere are limited studies and data regarding the preference for holding cash. Previousstudies have shown that the use of cash is declining with regards to comers and thatthere are behavior differences between cultures and sociodemographic groups inregards to characteristics and preferences for payment methods. The aim of thisstudy was to investigate the informational attributes that drives the preference forholding cash by studying two extreme cases, Sweden which is a pioneer of cashlesssociety, and Germany which is one of the most conservative cash-intensivecountries in the Western world. Primary quantitative data was derived fromstandardized questionnaires issued in both countries by Loomis AB; the data wasdescribed and analyzed with applicable statistical procedures. A multivariate analysiswas performed on a specific segment of the collected data were the respondents hadbeen asked to rate cash associated statements based on their agreeableness towardsthem. These segments were then examined through a Principal component analysisto determine the underlying dimensions regarding preferences for cash. Our resultssuggest that Germans withdrew cash more frequently, from a wider spectrum ofdenominations and carried it to a larger extend than Swedes. Swedes made limitedwithdrawals, of small denominations and preferred to carry smaller amounts of cash. The results also show that there were differences in the perception and preferencesfor cash between sociodemographic groups, with e.g. older age groups being used to itand the youngest using it due to ‘status quo bias’. The main conclusions include thatthe informational attributes such as security, anonymity, ease of use and paymentinfrastructure was the main drives for the preferences of holding cash.

Abstract:
Background: Computers are everywhere around us today and skills must be acquired in order for a person to use them. However, the topic of computer literacy is not researched enough to specify basic computer skills to consider an individual computer literate. This thesis will contribute to the research gap by investigating the computer skills of the workforce in the IT sector. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to examine the connection between computer programming and cyber security skills of the IT professional, e.g. is there a beneficial factor of this connection. Method: For this study the quantitative research method was used to gather data. The authors decided that the best way to reach their target group and answer the research questions was to conduct a survey and pose questions on the topics of computer literacy and cyber security. Conclusion: The results show that there is a statistical significance between the user’s security habits and his or her programming skills (or the absence of them). People who write code, defined as programmers, scored better on security skills survey, whereas their counterparts, the non-programmers, have some knowledge on the topic but they can never be absolutely sure of their cyber safety in the fast changing world of IT.

Abstract:
Transportation is a central component to most political, economic, social and environmental issues throughout most inhabited societies. The concerns of transport have become widely acknowledged. It is broadly accepted that promoting alternative forms of transport such as walking, cycling and public transport use is one solution to tackle environmental concerns. Although, delivering, implementing and developing transport strategies to reduce car usage is still highly debated. Transport stakeholders (e.g. planners and policymakers) have long strived to reduce car usage. Many studies have attempted to develop strategies or understand triggers that might encourage and promote a reduction in car use. Despite this, the car usage has typically intensified and alternative forms of transport have become marginalised or discouraged when compared to the car. This research investigates travel attitudes and behaviours of individuals along a specific urban travel corridor within an area of Birmingham, UK. It explores socio-demographic factors using a mixed methods approach that incorporated questionnaires, travel diaries and interviews. This work identified a series of transport measures conceived upon different urban demographic characteristics in order to meet different individuals’ transport need. A significant finding from this work indicated there was an appetite amongst the sampled participants to be willing to reduce their car use if the right transport strategies were introduced. Initially the results from the questionnaire suggested age influenced car use the most, however, other demographic characteristics (e.g. gender and deprivation) were found to be an influential factor.

Abstract:
In industry, energy efficiency reduces system cost and emissions to the environment. Energy audits are carried out in industry to identify measures that would increase energy efficiency. However, the usual case is that low-cost measures are implemented while capital intensive measures receive less attention possibly due to, example, inadequate information available to study risks involved. Decisions support tools have been identified as a means of supporting complex production related investment decision. The aim of this paper is to investigate profitability and potential global CO2 emission reduction of energy conversion investments in a small energy intensive industry by using an optimisation method as a decision support tool. The investments are evaluated using consistent future energy market scenarios with interdependent parameters. An optimisation model is developed with reMIND optimisation tool which is used to optimise the system cost of each scenario. The reduction in system cost and global CO2 emissions of the new investments and results from sensitivity analysis are evaluated to determine the optimal investment solution. In the report, it is established that optimisation methods provide a structured means of studying the risk involved in capital intensive investments. The optimisation results show that investment in a small-scale steam turbine combined heat and power production is a profitable and robust investment. The net reduction of global CO2 emission is substantial compared with the reference system. Furthermore, it is shown that biofuel policies alone may not make cost intensive biofuel investments attractive, further reduction in investment cost is required. The energy savings and global CO2 emission reductions achieved in this study can play an important role in achieving the aims of the European Union to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% and save 20 % of energy by the year 2020.

Abstract:
Physical activity and its significance for health have long received much attention. In recent times, sedentary behaviour and its health consequences have also been raised. Sedentary behaviour has recently grown among people all over the world, as a consequence of changing behaviour due to increasing access to digital devices and new means of transport. Sedentary behaviour has also found its way down with age and has become a growing problem even among children. In Sweden, children move less and less and the number of active children in club sports is decreasing.  This study was conducted at Telia Company in collaboration with a team called xLABS, part of Division X that is responsible for new business development. The aim of the study was to see if there was any innovation opportunity based on a study of behaviour change techniques (BCTs) to reduce sedentary behaviour among children. The target group was families with children aged 6-11 in Sweden. Based on a literature study, a questionnaire survey with parents and interviews with parents of children in the specific age range, two concepts for an app, Active and Parental Network, have been developed. The two concepts fulfil different customer requirements, and both have the potential to reduce sedentary behaviour among children. Active is aimed at the whole family with a focus on activating the children physically, while Parental Network is aimed at parents and has a focus on rules and activities. The two concepts were developed based on customer requirements found and have been related to literature within BCTs and habits. In addition to the concepts, conclusions have been drawn regarding what is required to motivate and engage children, what techniques parents use and which BCTs could be beneficial to include in a service to reduce sedentary behaviour. To motivate and engage the children, the app should enable common goals for the family so that parents can lead by example, rewards for achieved goals and a game function to make it a more fun experience.

Barber, John William Anthony. "Approaching the mind of the builder : analysis of the physical, structural and social constraints on the construction of the broch towers of Iron Age Scotland." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/23430.

Full text
Abstract:
Following a review of the paradigmatic context of broch towers in 2012, a revised standard model (the RSM) was defined. The then prevailing paradigm supports a view of broch remains as single monuments of highly variable form that continued in use over perhaps a millennium or more, without significant modification of their original tectonics i.e. their people/constructed-space relationships. This thesis challenges the pre-2012 paradigm by testing the hypothesis that brochs were built to the standard canonical form of the RSM and that their apparent diversity results from anthropic and, or natural modification, not design variability. The fieldwork tests could but did not find refutation of these hypotheses in the observable evidence and offered more profound interpretations of several surviving feature-types. The loading on the stone lintels of the entrance passage through the massively built outer wall and the structurally overladen inner wall created a major structural challenge, evoking a complex engineering solution. Its elements were individually noted pre-2012 but the significance of the engineering response to compression management had not been identified. This structural response was necessary for a tall structure with massive loads, and meaningless without one and its elements are therefore, jointly and severally, clear diagnostics of a broch tower. The entrance engineering was probably the inspiration of one individual or of a small group of master mason-types, not vernacular responses, contra the 2012 paradigm. Isolated stacked voids high in the inner wall are relict features indicative of significant modification of the inner wall. Other anomalous features are shown to be relict stacked void fragments. The East/West differences in brochs across Scotland have long been identified and these are generally attributed to their lithologies. Accepting that, this thesis argues that the principal differences are attributable to the social processes that gave rise to centralisation of settlement around, in and over brochs in the east and north, possibly during the first century BC, and the absence of centralisation in the west; perhaps also explaining the differences in the scale and composition of the artefact assemblages between the two zones. The canonical form facilitates calculation of the relative social costs of broch building for hard-rock and sedimentary stone types. This indicates that the costs of building, increase between 16-, and 32- fold over the buildable range of brochs. Constraints of design down-scalability, design weakness in ground loading, and design cost were major constraints on the mind of the broch builders. Canonicity and the limitations of drystone building technologies predicated specific forms of decomposition on the canonical broch, further complicating their autobiographies and their conservation: the main challenge now being that of finding ways to conserve the evidence for a sequence of processes while conserving the products of those processes.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has in many ways changed how we live our lives. As a means to decrease the risks, working at a distance is now common for most employees during the pandemic. A problem that has arisen is getting overall information on how employees well-being and productivity has been affected by the new forced work environment. The primary part of this study is to identify the current effects of remote work on employees at an engineering consultancy company, active in the field of consulting engineering, environmental technology and architecture in Sweden through a web-based survey and compare the results to previous studies on the subject of remote work. A secondary objective of this study was to develop a smartphone application with the goal of increasing the physical activity of employees currently working from home. A secondary part of this study was to identify a problem specific to remote work, and to come up with a technical solution to the problem through prototyping, development and testing. The survey's results revealed that Sweco management (where the survey was conducted) provided sufficient resources in order to preserve and enhance the general well-being of its workers who currently work from home, but they struggled to distinguish work and home life, as do many others in similar circumstances. Respondents also reported a higher workload and less physical exercise during the work day. Employees at the company reported higher levels of well-being and productivity than participants in other international studies. Although the company has taken precautions to improve the working conditions of its workers, further research into the subject is encouraged to see whether they stand out in their investment in their employees' well-being or whether they are simply following the pattern set by other businesses in the same sector.

Abstract:
This thesis is about the use of E-books in higher education, specifically at Malmö University. The purpose of this study is to investigate attitudes students have towards the use of E-books for scholarly purposes in higher education versus their printed counterparts. This study looks at student preferences in the use of E-books compared to printed books, along with the effects these media have on students reading habits. By discovering in which situations E-books or printed books are most beneficial, students can make informed decisions about which medium will benefit them the most. An online survey and recorded interviews were used as methods for collecting data, whichwas then compared to previously published studies related to this subject. Students were found to prefer the printed book for studying purposes, and it still remains as the main source for reading and analyzing longer passages of text. E-books, on the other hand, were found to be most advantageous when preparing research reports. This means that both media still have their place inhigher education, which is likely to continue in the foreseeable future.

Passwords are an important part of information security and works as a primary authentication method to protect user accounts. The purpose of this study is to investigate how an organisation’s employees follow the password policy and investigate if the password management is executed in an acceptable fashion from a security perspective and according to ISO standards. The method consisted of a survey, interviews of which the results has been compared to ISO standards guidelines and the organisation’s password policy, a risk analysis and a development of a tool to memorize passwords. The result showed insufficiency in the password management of the employees. Thru the analysis several actions have been found to constitute, restore and improve the password management and also preventing actions to keep the password management that is already sufficient. The conclusions are that there is a need for improvement of the password management and from these needs proposals for actions have been extracted.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to show how a possible philosophy of life can arise from Bergson&rsquo
s conception of time. In realizing this aim, I appeal to Hadot&rsquo
s description of the paradox of the human condition. I claim that in order to understand how a Bergsonian philosophy of life through Bergson&rsquo
s conception of time would arise we need to understand the paradox of the human condition. The reason for this is that there are a lot of dualities in Bergson&rsquo
s philosophy all of which, I claim, are based on this fundamental duality concerning the human condition. I believe that when this paradox and its possible resolution are restated in Bergsonian notions, a Bergsonian philosophy of life that consists of a life sub specie durationis, that is a life under the aspect of duration, would arise. Hadot considered the paradox within the context of phenomenology alone. This made me proceed by searching for other approaches to the paradox within Bergson&rsquo
s philosophy. I realized that the attempts in finding out possible solutions to this problem cannot be found in the context of phenomenology alone and that the vitalist and the existentialist aspects have to be considered in order to remain faithful to Bergson&rsquo
s philosophy as well as in order to construct a Bergsonian philosophy of life. The phenomenological aspect of the paradox arises around Bergson&rsquo
s notion of displacement of attention and when the notion of duré
e ré
elle is considered with consciousness in the light of the notion of intensity. The vitalist aspect enters into our discussion when we analyze Bergson&rsquo
s notion of é
lan vital around the consideration of true evolution. I believe that the existentialist aspect of the paradox of the human condition comes from Bergson&rsquo
s notion of freedom around the discussion of the superficial and the fundamental self. It emerges if the individual asks himself how to deal with this paradox that in turn defines his struggle to transform the tension the paradox involves and that tells him to bring his own attitude towards it.

Abstract:
Social media is widely used every day but the question is what strategies can be found behind Facebook and Instagram. Through a qualitative method research of underlying strategies on how individuals act on their social media have been made. The population is women age 18-35 and the purpose is to see how they structure their identity and personal brand on social media. The study was realized by interviews and a visual material shaped as images. The visual material is based on the Brand Mind Space model. The theory also relates to the models A Brand Personality and Communication Privacy Management (CPM).The result shows that Instagram is the channel used to the greatest extent. It also appears that trends in strategies for individuals in the population can be read out. It is important how private information is communicated, what is conveyed through the profile and what pictures that are published really represents. The study shows that the most important thing is to be honest and for the digital identity to reflect who the person is. It is also important to control the spread of information being shared and to not stand out or be perceived as annoying.

Abstract:
A growing body of writing research suggests college students' and teachers' conceptualizations of writing play an important role in learning to write and making the transition from secondary to post-secondary academic composition. First-year college writers are not blank slates; rather, they bring many assumptions and beliefs about academic writing to the first-year writing classroom from exposure to a wide range of literate practices throughout their lives. Metaphor acts as a way for scholars to trace students' as well as their instructors' assumptions and beliefs about writing. In this study, I contend that metaphor is a pathway to meta-cognitive awareness, mindfulness, and reflection. This multi-method descriptive study applies metaphor analysis to a corpus of more than a dozen first-year composition students' end-of-semester writing portfolios; the study also employs an auto-ethnographic approach to examining this author's texts composed as a graduate student and novice teacher. In several cases writing students in this study appeared to reconfigure their metaphors for writing and subsequently reconsider their assumptions about writing. My literature review and analysis suggests that metaphor remains an underutilized inventive and reflective strategy in composition pedagogy. Based on these results, I suggest that instructors consider how metaphoric competence might offer writers and writing instructors an alternate means for operationalizing key habits of mind such as meta-cognitive awareness, reflection, openness to learning, and creativity as recommended in the Framework for Success in Post-Secondary Writing. Ultimately, I argue that writers and teachers might benefit from adopting a more flexible attitude towards metaphor. As a rhetorical trope, metaphors are contextual and, thus, writers need to learn to mix, discard, create, and obscure metaphors as required by the situation.

The objective of this research harnesses to the results obtained in the Master's Dissertation defended in September 2008 in Postgraduate Studies Program in Mathematics Education at PUC - SP. In this same essay, issues related to teaching and learning of linear algebra sought to answer and find new ways of targeting and perspectives of students in a graduate in Electrical Engineering, asking Why and How should it be taught the discipline of linear algebra on a course with this profile? Among the results, we identified that the interdisciplinarity inherent to the topics of Linear Algebra and specific content of engineering or applied constituted an essential factor for the recognition of mathematical disciplines as theoretical and conceptual basis. Interdisciplinarity reflected in specific mathematical objects of linear algebra and practical situations of engineering materials for the formation of conceptual and general engineer seeking the theoretical foundation and basic justification for the technological improvement of its area. Based on a scenario and results envisioned in the dissertation we propose to investigate the cognitive structures involved in the construction of mathematical object eigenvalue and eigenvector in the initial and final student education phases in Engineering courses, showing the cognitive schemes in their mathematical minds. For this, the following issues are highlighted: ( 1 ) What conceptions (action - process -object- schema ) are evidenced in students after studying the mathematical object eigenvalue and eigenvector in the initial and final phases of their academic training courses in Engineering? and ( 2 ) these same phases, which concept image and concept definition are highlighted in the study of eigenvalue and eigenvector mathematical object? Substantiated by the theoretical contributions of Dubinsky (1991), on the APOS Theory and Vinner (1991), about the concept image and concept definition, we consider the cognitive processes involved in the construction of mathematical object, identifying the nature of their cognitive entities portrayed in mathematical mind. The discussion focuses on mathematical mind both the mathematical structure that is designed and shared by the community as the design in which each mental biological framework handles such ideas. To do so, we consider the relationship between the ideas which constitute the APOS theory, concepts image and definition and some aspects of Cognitive Neuroscience. Characterized as multiple case studies, data collection covered the speech of students in engineering courses in various training contexts, established by the institutions. The analysis of the specific mathematical concept called genetic decomposition led to this concept, which was proposed by System Dynamic Discrete problem, described by the difference equation K K x A.x 1 = + , (K = 0,1,2 , ... ) . Based on the ideas of Stewart (2008) and Trigueros et al. (2012) it was possible to us to identify some characteristics of showing the different conceptions of the students. Moreover, we consider some ideas that characterize the concept image and concept definition according Vinner (1991) and Domingos (2003). As a result of our investigation, we identified that the students of the first case study, at different stages of training, present the design process and the concept image on an instrumental level mathematical object eigenvalue and eigenvector. Have students in the second case, particularly, all of the first phase, and two of the second, showed signs of action and concept image incipient level. As a student of the second phase, have also highlighted the design process and the concept image on an instrumental level as the subject of the first case study. Therefore, we find no significant evolution between the inherent APOS Theory concepts and the concepts image of the object of study. We show that all students presented their speeches in relations between the Linear Algebra course and other courses in the program, such as Numerical Calculation, Electrical Circuits , Computer Graphics and Control Systems, with lesser or greater degree of depth and knowledge. We realize that students attach importance to mathematical disciplines in its formations and seek for a new approach to teaching that address the relationships between them and the disciplines of Engineering

Abstract:
Just like adults, children travel regularly in their everyday life. A major part of children’s travels goes to school, but apart from that children also do leisure travels to club activities and leisure facilities. The everyday travel habits of children affect both their health and independence. For this reason, this thesis will embrace children’s mobility and sustainable everyday travels. The aim is to raise the different travel types of children as well as present a basis for continued work within the topic. The study contains of literature research and questionnaires. One of the surveys was made in collaboration with Järfälla municipality. The two questionnaires, one for the students and one for their parents, investigated the travels habits to school and leisure activities for children in Skälbyskolan. Another questionnaire was sent to municipalities in the network of ResSmart. This survey collected information about if and how the municipalities work with children’s school travels and leisure travels, including also the reason why in some cases nothing was done. The result of the surveys showed that walking and cycling are the most common ways of transport to school. Most of the travels was done alone or with other children. Considering the use of bicycle, the use is dependent on the time of the year, where a large proportion cycle in summer but few in winter. To leisure activities, a great majority of the travels are made by car. Because of this, the independence of children’s leisure travel is generally non-existing. The reason why parents drive their children to leisure activities mainly depends on the distance, but also the time of the day in relation to darkness and the general family life. When driving children to school, the main reasons are lack of time and continued travels by car. When comparing Skälbyskolan with Gustav Vasa skola in the downtown of Stockholm, the result showed that walking is to most popular way of travel for both schools. However, neither cycling nor driving was made regularly to Gustav Vasa skola, even if the reasons when actually driving was the same as in Skälbyskolan. Regarding the municipality planning and actions, it is more common that municipalities work with sustainable school travels than children’s leisure travels. Furthermore, the working methods differ, where only physical arrangements are made within leisure travel routes and the lack of mobility management is a fact. With basis in the literature and survey results, action proposals are presented for a developed work within the area. For school travels, the actions should focus on reaching the parents and affecting their choice of mode, as well as actions for easier and more comfortable cycling during winter season. Considering leisure travels is the proposal to copy actions from the work with school travels, where the work should start off with inventions and travel habits surveys in leisure clubs. Furthermore, mobility management actions should be introduced, but also complex and long-term actions including leisure buses for children as well as compact city planning. Finally, the study mean that further work and surveys are needed for continued and developed work with children’s mobility. The area of children’s leisure travels should be raised both in planning documents and information, but also is media and larger forums.
