Abstract:
Recently, engineering graduates who acquired different skills, as well as leadership capabilities, are very much demanded to maintain high-level innovation, dealing with emerging technologies, and fulfilling the various needs of the public. Consequently, it is necessary that academicians in engineering programs develop appropriate curricula to achieve excellence in engineering education. Being accredited from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) is an indication that an academic program has fulfilled international standards in engineering education. The main element in ABET evaluation process is Student Outcomes (SOs) as they incorporate several capabilities and skills expected by stakeholders such as employers. In this study, we used Interpretive Structural Modeling technique (ISM), which is a soft operational research technique, to prioritize SOs and develop a precise study plan for the Industrial Engineering program at Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering (IMSE) at Kuwait University (KU). This plan showed an intelligible depiction of the relationships between the SOs and a clear direction on how to merge them within the engineering study plan. For data collection, surveys were developed and conducted to faculty members at IMSE Department at KU in addition to a set of employers within the country. The results indicated that ISM model facilitates a clear understanding of the relationships among SOs within the Industrial Engineering study plan at IMSE at KU. In addition, it recommended that students should understand the professional and ethical responsibilities at early stages of the study plan and that should be followed by training them on effective communication techniques.

Abstract:
Washington enjoys a unique international focus as a city planned for beauty. It incorporates a monumental baroque plan superimposed on a topography bordered by rivers and hills. Marble monuments and governmental structures carefully range a tree-lined formal landscape in the city's core. Fiercely protected height limits assure as a centerpiece the Capitol dome and monument-lined Mall. Conscious planning and architectural aesthetic effort have resulted in bridges that are an integral part of the nation's capital in 1996. Its structures reveal history, engineering excellence, and undeniable aesthetic import. Six bridges defend this thesis: Arlington Memorial Bridge, sculpture and arches formally carrying the Mall across the Potomac River; Francis Scott Key Bridge, high concrete arches whose silhouette are a major feature of the Potomac Palisades; William Howard Taft Bridge, engineering tour de force (largest unreinforced concrete structure in the world), carrying one of the city's main avenues across Rock Creek Park on multiple arches; Dumbarton Bridge, integrating architecture and sculpture in the parkscape while solving a street misalignment across Rock Creek Park; Connecticut Avenue Bridge over Klingle Valley, Art Deco steel-arched structure; and John Phillip Sousa Bridge, early 20th century axial connection of Pennsylvania Avenue, S.E., over the Anacostia River. Steel, concrete, arches, and trusses make up the aesthetic components of these structures, each in a unique visual context.

Abstract:
It was common to find in the writings of the different Greco-Roman philosophical schools of the first century certain catalogs of two or more vices and virtues. They were used to teach that a virtuous life ensured well-being and health while encouraging their disciples to abandon their vicious life leading to ruin. These catalogs influenced the composition of moral catalogs in the New Testament, especially in the letters written or attributed to Paul. Their catalogs were used as a rhetorical tool where the moral teachings of Christianity were developed and taught. According to the divine plan in Christ Jesus, good acts or virtues were considered divinely inspired because they helped the growth of the human person. On the other hand, bad actions or vices were seen as unworthy or sinful because they go against God’s plan and as a sign of those who will not inherit the kingdom of God. Thus, the catalogs of vices and virtues invited conversion and invited us to wait for the day when God will make all evil and corruption disappear from the world when love (agape), the Christian virtue per excellence, would be the norm for all.

Abstract:
Abstract : Indian engineering colleges need more qualified faculty, since, thousands of engineering colleges have been approved by AICTE with teachers who possess only bachelor's degrees without any experience in curriculum design, instructional design, evaluation, and industrial training. Many of them were not exposed to advanced industrial design and advanced manufacturing practices. This has resulted in the unemployment of about 70% of the graduates. This paper focuses on the systematic planning, and implementing appropriate faculty development programs not only for the fresh graduate teachers but also the senior faculty members through various longterm programs, short-term courses, industrial training, research works, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) under SWAYAM, and training through specialized overseas courses that are implemented by Ministry of Education. National Institutes of Technical Teachers Training are offering MOOCs in various areas of engineering education. Continuous process development has been suggested. The engineering colleges could reimburse facultymembers on the cost of training under MOOCs which are offered by edX, COURSERA, etc. Further, the colleges should organize faculty development programs in collaboration with the well-known global universities and Research & Development Centers of Multinational Companies (MNCs) which are functioning here. Such a dynamic initiative will bring excellence in the knowledge capital. The government can assist professional associations to plan industryrelevant workshops. Considering the difficulties in getting admission for thousands of faculty members in Quality Improvement Programs (QIP), alternate, hybrid and flexible programs are suggested. The significant outcomes of these initiatives are: i) It increased the skills and competencies of the faculty members and students; ii) The graduates have become be industry-ready; iii) Many regions have come industrially competitive, iv) The new initiatives like Pandit Madan Mohan Malavia National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT) and MOOCs have improved the faculty competencies in hundreds of colleges; v) Global Initiative for Academic Networks (GIAN) have increased interdisciplinary research capability of the faculty members; vi) The overall outcomes of these initiatives have improved the engineering curriculum, attributes of the graduates and interdisciplinary research. It is suggested to undertake further research on the finetuning of the curricula to meet the challenges of Industry-4.0 Keywords: Faculty Competence, Dynamic Process, QIP, Summer Schools, Webinars, MOOCs.

Abstract:
Metal explants from orthopedic surgical therapy are classified as solid waste with a potential risk for contamination. Objective: To analyze the literature on how environmental management occurs in hospitals through the disposal of waste from orthopedic metallic explants. Methodology: This research was an applied, practical, quantitative, experimental, exploratory, empirical, and cross-sectional study with the investigative objective of confirming the hypotheses. The research was carried out in all Brazilian States, in public and private hospitals considered as references for the treatment of orthopedics and traumatology. Three distinct groups were compared: Brazilian hospitals certified by ISO 14 001; hospitals with ONA accreditation with a level of excellence; and non-certified hospitals, using the inductive method. Main findings: The explants must be registered and controlled in order to be recycled, which is a step included in the health waste management plan (PGRSS). However, their final destination is a large-scale problem due to obstacles in law application created by economic issues. When it comes to the recycling of surgical explants, stainless steel can be completely reused, for instance. Main conclusions: In Brazil, there are limited data regarding the number of generators or the amount of waste produced from health services, and, additionally, explants are improperly discarded as sharps waste.

Abstract:
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) recently announced a plan to undertake a "reallocations exercise" designed to provide support for new initiatives and emerging fields of research in a period of fiscal restraint. NSERC's Grant Selection Committees (GSC) were instructed to establish committees charged with preparing reports that respond to the question "Why is it important for Canada that your research community should receive some of the funds available for reallocation?" The Plant Biology and Food Science Grant Selection Committee (GSC03) responded by striking a committee representing the breadth of research it supports. Extensive input was obtained from the scientific community through a web site and electronic discussion group. A discussion document was then prepared and distributed to 34 "consultants" representing NSERC-funded researchers and leaders in the agricultural, food, and forest industries. After refining the report, a second draft was circulated to more than 90 scientists for further review. This process provided us with a collective "vision" of our discipline that focuses on the importance of fundamental research, guided by excellence, innovation through multidisciplinary approaches, international leadership potential, and relevance to Canada and Canadians. To achieve this vision, NSERC must introduce a strategy to attract, train, and retain our best young minds, establish a broad, realistic funding base, and create opportunities for more interaction among disciplines. Six specific recommendations were put forward to achieve these goals with a total request for $15.3 million in reallocated and new money. If funded, this initiative will provide GSC03 researchers with the support required to generate the ideas, communicate the insights, develop the skills, and educate the personnel that will be essential for Canada's participation in the biotechnology revolution that is transforming global agriculture, food, and forest industries. Moreover, fundamental knowledge of the interaction between plants and their environment will also help Canada play a leading role in the effective, responsible stewardship of planetary resources in the 21st century.Key words: Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, reallocations exercise, plant biology, food science, biotechnology, fundamental research.

Full text
Abstract:
Precast concrete (PC) method of construction is preferred for excellence in the reduction of construction period, lightweight, and durability and for PC member to be mostly transported to a site after its production in the in-plant production because the in situ production of the PC member is negatively perceived because of the limitation of space or production process being complex and difficult. However, if the PC member is produced on site and installed, it is possible to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions that are generated during shipping and loading and unloading, which are indirectly required for in-plant production. Carbon dioxide emission reduction effect due to the difference between the in situ production and in-plant production process of the PC member was confirmed by the existing studies, but the study of the carbon dioxide reduction effect according to various production environments of the in-plant production has not been performed. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the CO2 emission reduction effect of the PC member produced in site according to the in-plant production environment. As a result, it was found that when PC members were produced on site, there was an effect of reducing CO2 emissions by an average of 25.64% compared to factory production. In future, the results of this study will be used as basic data for establishing a CO2 emission reduction plan at construction sites.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the extent at which the reliability of an aluminium wire rolling mill can be improved by ameliorating current control and maintenance practices. Design/methodology/approach The paper deals with the discrimination of the most critical components by substantial shop-floor failure data. The research work narrates a method for evaluating maintainability criticality index for each failure cause of identified critical components through two different MCDM approaches: one based on grey-complex proportional risk assessment (COPRAS-G) and the other based on preference section index (PSI). Findings The primary findings of this research work are to prioritize the maintenance activities by comparing results obtained through different failure analysis models. It is proposing improvements in the maintenance plan of critical components like bearings, gears and shafts of an aluminium wire rolling mill which are commonly representing the most critical components in a large range of industrial processes. Research limitations/implications The limitation of the proposed study is that the failure models may not represent failures due to the first instant every time as adequate of design as such components are not checked for a high failure rate. Practical implications The proposed study is an interdisciplinary work which will help to understand about the working lives of components and associated failures. It will lead to reengineer new tools efficiently and to gain the maintenance excellence. Originality/value Originality mainly consists in the contemporary application of two non-identical MCDM-based methods (COPRAS-G and PSI). It will help to elucidate maintenance issues of major process industries and recommended deliverable keys.

Abstract:
Advances in genome engineering (GE) tools based on sequence-specific programmable nucleases have revolutionized precise genome editing in plants. However, only the traditional approaches are used to deliver these GE reagents, which mostly rely on Agrobacterium-mediated transformation or particle bombardment. These techniques have been successfully used for the past decades for the genetic engineering of plants with some limitations relating to lengthy time-taking protocols and transgenes integration-related regulatory concerns. Nevertheless, in the era of climate change, we require certain faster protocols for developing climate-smart resilient crops through GE to deal with global food security. Therefore, some alternative approaches are needed to robustly deliver the GE reagents. In this case, the plant viral vectors could be an excellent option for the delivery of GE reagents because they are efficient, effective, and precise. Additionally, these are autonomously replicating and considered as natural specialists for transient delivery. In the present review, we have discussed the potential use of these plant viral vectors for the efficient delivery of GE reagents. We have further described the different plant viral vectors, such as DNA and RNA viruses, which have been used as efficient gene targeting systems in model plants, and in other important crops including potato, tomato, wheat, and rice. The achievements gained so far in the use of viral vectors as a carrier for GE reagent delivery are depicted along with the benefits and limitations of each viral vector. Moreover, recent advances have been explored in employing viral vectors for GE and adapting this technology for future research.

Abstract:
Basalt fiber reinforced concrete has excellent basic mechanical properties. It has become a hot topic of engineering studies. Based on the freeze-thaw resistance of durability indices, through the comparative experiment on the dynamic elastic modulus and mass loss of plain concrete and basalt fiber reinforced concrete in the freeze-thaw cycles, this paper had discussed the impact of basalt fiber on the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete, and have considered whether the specimens were mixed with fly ash. The results showed that basalt fibers can improve the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete specimens significantly. After 100 freeze-thaw cycles, the dynamic elastic modulus of basalt fiber reinforced concrete specimens was 1.47 times as much as that of plain concrete specimens, and mass loss of basalt fiber reinforced concrete specimens was 0.64 times as much as that of plain concrete specimens. Fly ash had an influence on the freeze-thaw resistance of basalt fiber reinforced concrete. In engineering applications, the mixing amount of fly ash should be taken into consideration. This research had a certain reference value on the engineering applications of basalt fiber reinforced concrete.

Abstract:
Process optimization with Lean Six Sigma (LSS) has become more popular every day for years in almost every kind of industry. This integration has brought an even wider variety of possible application areas for industries and research institutes. Recently, the use of LSS for process optimization in biological fields has become more and more common. In this study, LSS methodology is used for process optimization in an industrial scale biogas plant in Hamburg, Germany. The methodology used includes all the DMAIC cycle and related tools. Hypothesis tests were used to calculate the p-value of each experiment for the LSS interpretation. Due to the experimental factors, one-way ANOVA and 1-sample Z-test were used to determine the p-values. By conducting hypothesis testing after the analysis phase of this study, it was found that particle size, freshness of the substrate, and the amount of sand content in the substrate had a significant effect on the desired amount of biogas produced with a p-value of less than 0.01. These root causes led to approaches that focused on high quality feedstock and sufficient pretreatment methods. This paper represents a pioneering example of integrating Lean Six Sigma into biogas plant operation.

The present analysis addresses several passive tilt systems for railroad cars aiming to compensate for the cart deficiency on curved tracks. To this end, the virtual centre of suspension must be located as close as possible to the longitudinal plane of symmetry of the coach, above the mass centre level for stability reasons. On the one hand, pantograph or Peaucellier's mechanisms may achieve the correct self-compensation. On the other hand, simpler articulated systems yield the desired goal with an excellent approximation. For example, selective algorithms can be applied for designing eight-link mechanisms, to be optimized thereafter by some method of the gradient type, minimizing the mean square value of the transverse acceleration component.

Abstract:
Three-dimensional (3D) structures at the nanometer length scale play a crucial role in modern devices, but their fabrication using traditional top-down approaches is complex and expensive. Analogous to atomic lattices, block copolymers (BCPs) spontaneously form a rich variety of 3D nanostructures and have the potential to substantially simplify 3D nanofabrication. Here, we show that the 3D superlattice formed by BCP micelles can be controlled by lithographically defined 2D templates matching a crystallographic plane in the 3D superlattice. Using scanning transmission electron microscopy tomography, we demonstrate precise control over the lattice symmetry and orientation. Excellent ordering and substrate registration can be achieved, propagating through 284-nanometer-thick films. BCP epitaxy also showed exceptional lattice tunability, with a continuous Bain transformation from a body-centered cubic to a face-centered cubic lattice. Lattice stability was mediated by molecular packing frustration, and surface-induced lattice reconstruction was observed, leading to the formation of a unique honeycomb lattice.

Abstract:
Purpose Manufacturing excellence is critical to our nation’s economy. Indian Government’s National Manufacturing Policy, drafted in 2011, is being revamped to include the aspects of Industry 4.0. Initiatives, both led and assisted by government and industries, are being launched to catalyze and transform India’s manufacturing competencies. This paper aims to study the functional areas which can potentially leverage Industry 4.0 technologies and help India’s manufacturing establishments to transform. It does so in context of the aspirations of India’s small and medium discrete manufacturing establishments (SMME) towards adopting digital technologies for the identified functional areas. The study draws its context from the relevant literature review intended to examine the academic articles published until the end of September 2018, followed by a maturity assessment survey of Indian SMMEs to establish priority areas Design/methodology/approach The literature survey has been complemented with a maturity survey of more than 250 of Indian SMMEs to establish adoption gaps by comparing proficiency and sophistication of their present status and proposed adoption aspirations by 2020. The assessment of the organizational aspirations and gap areas identified is expected to indicate which of the Industry 4.0 elements can be adopted by them. Findings The maturity survey undertaken throws up several insights – Indian SMME community’s self-assessment indicates operational measurements followed by manufacturing and design interventions as the aspired transformation cycle. The survey indicates that manufacturers would like to make changes to their design and manufacturing strategies based on performance metrics; therefore, they need to first capture real-time machine data, analyze and then incorporate the resulting improvements in manufacturing and design decisions in that order. Research limitations/implications The maturity assessment method itself is in evolution stage, and future correlations with benefits will strengthen observations. Industry 4.0 being relatively new initiative for India, availability of country-specific academic literature is limited. The maturity assessment survey undertaken across organizations of North, West and South India therefore carries the risk of not reflecting the views of a wider population. The current maturity, or the lack of it, of proficiency and readiness of India’s SMMEs with respect to digital technologies may also be a barrier to self-examine. Practical implications This research is expected to provide insight into priorities to be adopted for digital-centric transformation by Indian SMMEs. It is expected to facilitate policymakers and influencers from government and industry to help frame policies that facilitate the adoption of digital technologies by Indian SMMEs and facilitate India’s technical education community to adopt skill development programs to support industry. It is expected to provide guidance to India’s academic institutions to rejig their curriculums to help bridge the critical skills gap that exists between newly inducted engineering professionals and industry. Social implications Digitalization is expected to foster lean and therefore support sustainability initiatives. Digitalization is expected to help create new, alternative sources of employment which are more relevant to emerging times and foster unlearning the past and relearning of new skills. This emerging diversity of engineering applications resulting from digitalization is expected to also support the larger and poorer agricultural community of India and help the sector to become more efficient and productive, which in turn will reduce economic alienation of a large section of Indian society. Originality/value Industry 4.0 has been identified as the transformational initiative for India’s manufacturing competitiveness. Abstract:
The large-scale production of plant-derived secondary metabolites (PDSM) in bioreactors to meet the increasing demand for bioactive compounds for the treatment and prevention of degenerative diseases is nowadays considered an engineering challenge due to the large number of operational factors that need to be considered during their design and scale-up. The plant cell suspension culture (CSC) has presented numerous benefits over other technologies, such as the conventional whole-plant extraction, not only for avoiding the overexploitation of plant species, but also for achieving better yields and having excellent scaling-up attributes. The selection of the bioreactor configuration depends on intrinsic cell culture properties and engineering considerations related to the effect of operating conditions on thermodynamics, kinetics, and transport phenomena, which together are essential for accomplishing the large-scale production of PDSM. To this end, this review, firstly, provides a comprehensive appraisement of PDSM, essentially those with demonstrated importance and utilization in pharmaceutical industries. Then, special attention is given to PDSM obtained out of CSC. Finally, engineering aspects related to the bioreactor configuration for CSC stating the effect of the operating conditions on kinetics and transport phenomena and, hence, on the cell viability and production of PDSM are presented accordingly. The engineering analysis of the reviewed bioreactor configurations for CSC will pave the way for future research focused on their scaling up, to produce high value-added PDSM.

Abstract:
Factors such as aircraft design, air traffic control, aviation fuel quality, management policies, etc. are associated with flight safety. Diverse methodologies and systems have been developed for managing these intricate factors. Much focus over time has been on the aircraft itself; the design, pre-flight checks and operational procedures. This study is focused on highlighting how the combination of Safety Management Systems (SMS) and Quality Management Systems (QMS) are deployed in the jet fuel value chain for ensuring the safety of personnel, the integrity of the work process and facility and ultimately the supply of quality and dry on-spec Jet A-1 fuel for into-plane or fuelling operations. For the integrated safety and quality management system (ISQMS) to be effective, all stakeholders must play active roles and show utmost commitment to the ISQMS vision and goals. The management of the fuelling company sets the ISQMS pace and drives the process. The ISQMS incorporates all aspect of the business operations and offers both direct and indirect benefits to the business.

Abstract:
Just as the pandemic situation is receding and restrictions to entry in many countries have been lifted, the geopolitics of the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army has led to nearly historical highs in gas and oil prices. SPE was one of the first global energy-related societies to issue a statement from its leadership on Ukraine. SPE’s leadership condemns the human tragedy unfolding in Ukraine and supports all actions by the international community to prevent further escalation of the conflict. We also encourage all efforts to find a peaceful solution. SPE is providing financial support through our sections in the region to aid with food and humanitarian aid, and the evacuation of our Ukraine-based members and their families. The worldwide spare capacity in oil production (mostly limited to Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Iraq) is so low that it would be insufficient to prevent oil prices from skyrocketing, should further restrictions be imposed on Russia’s oil exports. The upstream underinvestment resulting from two downcycles in 2015 and 2020 has strongly impacted both production capacity and record-low reserve discoveries. Higher energy prices are leading to global inflation and to an economic slowdown, a macroeconomic phenomenon called stagflation. In this context, 2022 had a strong start for SPE, with the International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) being held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for the first time (the previous edition was held in Dhahran) with an attendance of more than 13,000. The efforts by the IPTC organizing program and executive committees were exceptional, with an enthusiastic involvement of Saudi young volunteers. The IPTC Excellence in Project Integration Award was the opportunity to recognize exceptional projects as a showcase of technology, efficiency, collaboration, and sustainability. Such projects make us all feel proud to be part of the oil and gas industry. Saudi Aramco’s exclusive sponsorship also contributed to the great success of IPTC. The Saudi hosts organized two geological field trips, the first one being “A Visit to Jurassic Succession and Edge of the World.” The second was “The Great Discovery,” one of the world’s most historically significant geological localities—the magnificent outcrop of Dahil Heet which contributed to the discovery of the world’s largest oil deposits. I was very impressed by the progress made by the city of Riyadh in the promotion of sustainability, including an outstanding public transportation system with six metropolitan lines being developed simultaneously. In May 2021, the SPE Board of Directors and the AAPG Executive Committee announced that they were exploring the possibility of a merger between the two organizations. The Steering Committee, comprising volunteers, was created to define the conditions for the merger and worked tirelessly to develop a merger plan. SPE’s leadership viewed the idea of a merger, which has been broached many times over the years, as a catalyst for change that our organization needs. We must better position SPE to address declining corporate support and the significant loss of younger members, as well as deal with the changes occurring in our industry.
