Abstract:

Abstract:
The political engagement of individuals has complexly evolved in a borderless world brought by various developments in technology. This study revisits how various predictors, including personality traits such as extraversion and openness to experience, political efficacy, and online (FB) engagement, influence offline political engagements. Using quantitative techniques, the data gathered from a survey with 120 respondents in Cebu City, Philippines, was analyzed using the R software to generate descriptive statistics, correlation, simple linear regression, and multiple regression. A salient finding shows that the respondents’ level of extraversion, openness to experience, and political efficacy is high, while the level of political engagement is low online and offline. While online (FB) political engagement alone highly predicts offline political engagement behavior, all other independent variables (extraversion, openness to experience, and political efficacy) modeled as one attributes a very low effect towards offline political engagement. The model that includes all predictors have produced significant result that strongly supports this study’s central claim. Further, the study discussed the non-engagement of Cebuanos and commenced with suggestions on how Facebook (FB) can further influence an individual’s political engagements as a social media platform. While the publics’ engagements on political issues are vital to democratic societies, the study stressed social media's crucial influence on safeguarding democracies, human rights, and social justice.

Abstract:
Abstract This study aimed to assess the association between social engagement and conversion from Cognitive Impairment No Dementia (CIND) to dementia and to investigate the mediating role of cognitive and physical engagements on that relationship. Data from two waves (2010 and 2014) of the psychosocial and core modules of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) were used. The sample consisted of 929 people who had CIND in 2010 and participated in the survey in 2014. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) with eight indicators of social engagement (activities with children, volunteering with youth/others, attending educational course/organization, meeting up, speaking on the phone, writing or emailing) found three groups: formal and informal social engagement (20.7%), informal social engagement only (48.9%), and low social engagement (30.5%). Binary logistic regression analysis showed sub groups with higher levels and greater variety of social engagements were associated with lower probability of conversion to dementia in four years. Path analysis with structural equation modeling (SEM) framework showed the relationship between patterns of social engagement and lower conversion to dementia was mediated by having higher engagement in cognitive activities (e.g. home maintenance, playing sports), but not by engagement in physical activities (e.g. playing games, using computer). Results from this study implied (1) promoting active social engagement may be a promising intervention to prevent or delay conversion from CIND to dementia, and (2) promoting social engagement may be a particularly effective and efficient strategy since it promotes other activity engagements that may itself prevent or delay conversion from CIND to dementia.

Abstract:
Engagement quality (concurring partner) review is an important part of the audit review process. It is one quality control mechanism used by public accounting firms to monitor the quality of audit engagements. The engagement quality reviewer serves as an evaluator of the performance of the engagement partner and engagement team. Concerns about the effectiveness of existing firm concurring partner review practices have led to increased partner sanctions imposed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In addition, Section 103 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 directs the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) to develop an auditing standard on engagement quality review. This practice note reports on an analysis of six major firms' written guidance and practice aids for engagement quality review. Our comparison of the firms' guidance shows some differences in the assignment of engagement quality reviewer, the participation of the engagement quality reviewer in audit planning, the extensiveness of practice aids, and the involvement of engagement quality reviewer during the course of audit engagements. Lastly, we identify a number of research questions and practice implications.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract The imperative of knowledge based and inclusive development is making universities to realign their teaching and research missions to embrace community engagement. Using case studies of three universities in Nigeria, this paper examines how different types of Universities in Nigeria carry out community engagement and the nature of the benefits that accrues from the engagement. It also analyses the existing university policy framework with respect to university community engagement with a view to identifying the effectiveness of these policies in engendering university-community engagement in Nigeria. The findings revealed that the emerging policy to support community engagement at the universities does not provide for adequate framework to engender an effective university-community engagement. Besides, the reward systems of the universities do not support community engagement as a valid form of scholarship. Most of the university engagements are formal engagements with little or no link to immediate local communities. There is the need for a policy re-orientation that first integrates the principles of infusion model as a framework of the university community engagement policy. Secondly, the university community engagement policy must reward and recognize community engagement as a valid kind of scholarship among academics. This is a sine qua non in increasing university contributions to the development of their immediate communities.

Abstract:
Tax consulting services are an important growth area for professional accounting firms. However, regulatory and governmental bodies are concerned that consulting service sales may impair professional accountants' judgment. Using source credibility theory, this study examines whether research and review processes in taxconsulting engagements differ when two key factors are varied: source of the planning idea and engagement type. Big 4 seniors and managers reviewed a tax memorandum in which information source (prepared by National Tax Office or local staff member) and engagement type (initiated by a client or by the firm) are manipulated in a 2×2 design. Engagement managers performed the most thorough reviews when involved in a firm-initiated consulting engagement relying upon a National Tax Office memorandum. Thus, the results of this study are inconsistent with the presumption that objectivity is impaired in highly incentivized consulting engagements.

Abstract:
AbstractPrototypes have the potential to provoke discussion and to encourage stakeholders to play an active role during design engagements in the front-end phases of a design process. However, detailed descriptions of stakeholder engagement strategies in front-end design are lacking. The aim of this research study was to understand how design practitioners prepare and manage stakeholders for engagements involving prototypes in the front-end phases of a medical device design process. Design practitioners at companies developing mechanical and electromechanical medical devices for use in low- and middle-income countries were interviewed following a semi-structured interview guide. Interview transcripts were analysed, and inductive codes were developed. The findings suggest that design practitioners manage the group composition of stakeholders, review the project and prototype(s) with stakeholders at the start of the engagement, and show the progress of prototypes to stakeholders over multiple engagements. These strategies shed light on the importance of handling interpersonal relationships during stakeholder engagement with prototypes.

Abstract:
Regardless of the size of the hospital, the leaders have critical responsibilities to engage the employee in some situations. So you are in luck if you have the most precious tool of technologies usage as an enhancement variable. Aim: This study aimed to explore Employee Engagement factors in the light of advanced technology. Design: An exploratory correlation study design was exploited in this study. Sample& Setting: a cross-sectional sample of 350 different category employees was employed. Tools: an adapted engagement questionnaire was used to collect the pertinent facts. Results: The main discoveries of this study exhibited that, in the light of technology, many factors are important for enhancing work engagement; these factors are leadership, teamwork, social engagement, staffing& resource capability…..etc. Respectively: These factors did not differ between the studied group work engagements concerning neither their working department nor relation to their gender, but there was a highly significant difference between the studied group work engagements to their years of experience Conclusion: technology using can enhance employee engagement. Although many factors enhance employee engagement, the advanced technologies make those factors differ in their priority and importance. Recommendations: all organizations should promote technologies induction within limits that help in employees’ engagement. Also, to achieve a higher level of work engagement when deploying technology, it's important to distinguish between tacit and explicit knowledge. Keywords (MeSH words): technology, engagement, employees, organization.

Abstract:
Wet clutches that handle the gearshifts in automatic transmission undergo severe thermal stresses due to the occurrence of large temperature gradients during engagement. To accurately design wet clutches, better models to simulate the engagement process are needed. This work presents a finite element model for simulating wet clutch engagements. The total friction coefficient was used to describe the different lubrication regimes that a wet clutch engagement undergoes. The model also includes provision for drive torque that realistically simulates the engine torque of a car. The results of the simulations are successfully verified by comparison with laboratory experiments on a testrig specially designed to accommodate the drive torque, covering a wide range of typical engagements. Excellent agreement between experiment and simulations is reported in terms of both the dynamics of the engagement and the thermal characteristics. The results are indicative of the utility of the model as a useful engineering tool.

Abstract:
e18102 Background: Online search engines, forums and social networks can offer an important space to ask questions and share experiences. Online searches, forums and social networks have become one of the most common ways patients learn about their lymphoma. However, not much is known about which sites and online sources engage people on the topic of lymphoma and which social networks are used to learn and/or share experiences. Methods: Our objective was to analyze the sites with the most engagement online on the topic of lymphoma. We used an online analytical research program (BuzzSumo), which can assess specific content and identify sites that generate the greatest frequency of engagement across social platforms. Our analysis covered activity from 2/2014-2/2019. Results: From the analysis of 9,141 online articles on the topic of lymphoma and 662,690 engagements, we found that the social network that was used the most was Facebook and to a much lesser extent Twitter. The Pinterest and Reddit platforms were not engaged on this topic. Most engagements were with “List” and “What you should know” articles on lymphoma for both Facebook and Twitter with a significantly lesser amount of engagement for video content. Articles on lymphoma less than 2000 words had the most engagement. A number of different types of sites generated the most engagements -- ranging from media outlets, lymphoma foundations and large medical centers. An analysis of 28,863 Facebook posts on lymphoma with 4,765,956 total engagements revealed that video posts generated the most engagements and that posts that were > 300 characters generated more engagement. An analysis of questions asked online mentioning lymphoma revealed that the most common topics were that of “diagnosis” and associated emotions – “worried” or “scared.” Conclusions: Online articles and social networks have become integrated into our daily lives. It is important that we start to understand how these information sources are being used by patients, caregivers and health care providers. Our analysis of online engagement on the topic of lymphoma is an example of how analytical programs can be used to help understand where and how people are engaging to learn and share their experiences with lymphoma.

Abstract:
This study investigates three aspects of social communication in 12-month-old infants and their caregivers: (a) caregiver conversational style, (b) caregiver gesture, and (c) infant engagement. Differences in caregiver behavior during passive joint engagement were associated with language outcomes. Although total mean duration of infant time in passive joint engagement was negatively associated with later language, caregiver contingent comments (CCCs) addressed to infants during passive joint engagements related to language learning. CCC utterances were found to co-occur with gesture, suggesting that CCC is an inherently multimodal conversational style. The positive association between CCCs during passive joint engagements and later language suggests that caregiver behavior is important, even at times when infants are not actively engaged with the caregiver.

ObjectiveThe present study aimed to examine the confounding effects of depressive symptoms and the role of gender in the association between social engagement and cognitive functioning among older Indian adults.DesignLarge-scale cross-sectional survey data were analysed.Setting and participantsData from the Longitudinal Aging Study in India (2017–2019) were used in the analysis. The sample included 23 584 individuals aged 60 years and above (11 403 men and 12 181 women).Outcome measuresThe outcome variable was cognitive functioning, which was based on various measures including immediate and delayed word recall, orientation, executive functioning, arithmetic ability and object naming. Social engagement measure consists of marital status, living arrangement, availability of confidant, and participation in indoor games, and social and cultural functions. The Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale was used to assess depressive symptoms.ResultsSignificant gender differences in mean cognition scores (men: 25.8, women: 21.1; on a scale of 0–43) were observed. Two-way stratification between social engagement and depressive symptoms was significantly associated with cognitive functioning after controlling for selected explanatory factors. Older men with a low level of social engagements had significantly poor cognitive functioning (β=−1.12; 95% CI: −1.53 to –0.72) compared with men with a high level of social engagements. On the other hand, women with a higher level of social engagement performed poorly on cognitive tests (β=−1.54; 95% CI: −2.11 to –0.98) compared with men with higher social engagements. Three-way stratification between social engagement, gender and depressive symptoms suggests that social engagement’s buffering effects are lower in women than in men. The Karlson-Holm-Breen method identified a significant confounding effect of depressive symptoms on the relationship between social engagement and cognitive functioning.ConclusionThe positive association of social engagement with cognitive functioning was significantly confounded by depressive symptoms, suggesting the need for maintaining social relations that help improve mental health and cognitive functioning among older adults.

Abstract:
There is a growing scholarly interest in Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ engagement with Islam. This interest has highlighted some significant historical points of contact, such as with the Makassan fishermen, the Afghan cameleers, and the Malay pearl divers. Historical engagements with Islam, such as these, have influenced the contemporary identity formation for some Indigenous peoples, by acknowledging the historical connections without embracing Islam or identifying as a practicing Muslim. That some Indigenous people with no known familial historical engagement with Islam have embraced Islam has raised surprise, concern, and confusion. As it has primarily been historians, sociologists, and anthropologists that have heretofore been attempting to document and understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ engagement with Islam, it is unsurprising that the suggested reasons for such engagement have been historical, sociological, and anthropological. Without dismissing or contradicting the existing research, this article will suggest that current literature does not explicitly account for philosophical and spiritual convergences between the belief structures of Australia’s Indigenous peoples and Islam in the explanation of both historical and contemporary engagements.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine how sustainability assurance providers’ (SAPs) promotion of sustainability assurance influences the scope of engagements, its implications for professional and managerial capture and the ability of sustainability assurance to promote credible reporting. Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted in-depth interviews with sustainability reporting managers (SRMs) and SAPs in Australia and New Zealand, using an institutional work lens to focus the analysis. Findings At the start of a new assurance engagement, SAPs offer pre-assurance and flexible assurance scopes, allowing them to recruit clients on narrow-scoped engagements. These narrow-scoped engagements focus on disclosed content and limit SAPs’ ability to add value and enhance credibility. During assurance engagements, SAPs educate managers and encourage changing the norms underlying sustainability reporting. At the end of the assurance engagement, SAPs provide a management report demonstrating added-value of assurance and encouraging clients broader-scoped engagements. However, with each assurance engagement, the recommendations offer diminishing returns, often leading managers to question the value of broad-scoped engagements and to consider narrowing the scope to realize savings. Under these conditions, client pressure (potentially managerial capture) along with practitioners’ desires to grow assurance income (potentially professional capture) can affect SAPs’ independence and the quality of their assurance work. Practical implications The study implies that regulation mandating the scope of engagements may be called for. Originality/value The authors contribute to the research literature in several ways. First, the findings show how professional and managerial capture occurs before, during and at the end of the assurance process. The authors highlight how perceived value addition from sustainability assurance diminishes over time and how this impacts the scope of engagements (with implications for SAPs independence and the quality of assurance work). The authors show these findings in a table, clarifying the complicated interrelationships. Second, the authors contribute to theory by identifying a new form of institutional work. Third, unlike previous studies focused on SAPs, the authors provide insights from the perspectives of both SAPs and SRMs.

The aim of the study was to investigate the extent of engagement, inclusion and influence of engagement on inclusion of Students with Disabilities (SWDs) in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Convergent Parallel Mixed research design was employed though only quantitative data presentation, interpretation and discussion was considered in this paper. Student Engagement Scale (SES) and College Student Experience Questionnaire (CSEQ) were used to collect data. Reliability and validity of the instruments was scrutinized properly. For example, pilot study of the instruments was undertaken involving 30 SWDs who were attending their education at Mekelle University. Target population were 773 SWDs from 5 HEIs in the country, yet through Taro (1967) stratified proportionate random sampling technique (deaf, blind and physical impairment strata) 264 SWDs were determined to be sample populations. The data collected by the two questionnaire were analyzed by using one-sample t-test and multiple stepwise regression. Results indicated that SWDs were engaged highly in their sense of valuing (psychological engagement I) and cognitive engagements. However, they have lower sense of belonging, lower relationships with faculty members, peers and behavioral engagements. On the contrary, SWDs were found to be included and this inclusion was influenced by SWDs’ engagement. Recommendation was therefore, training about engagement need to be delivered to SWDs at various levels of education before entering to HEIs.

Contemporary societies are distancing themselves from nature, driven by urbanization, biodiversity loss, connection loss, industrialization and loss of green space access – all reducing our empathy for nature. Conservation and grassroots reporting highlight nature’s wellbeing, and require impactful citizen-led responses. Youth leaders are reflecting mirrors on humankind, stating that ‘our world is on fire’ and demanding action. Natural world interactions provide health benefits and resilience, proving transformative to our attitude, values and behaviour. The My Naturewatch project facilitates engagements with people’s environments and, in doing so, helps them to comprehend them. Nature observations help connect, engage and foster custodians, at a time where separation from wildlife necessitates active engagement. Activities specifically challenge our understanding of ‘designed engagement(s)’, not as passive activities but as impactful active engagements, openly accessible. This article proposes criteria encouraging public participation within the natural world, presenting value to NGOs, designers, funders and agents. Thirty experts from design, ecology, conservation, museology, engagement, rewilding, wildlife and community work were interviewed, informing ‘design for environmental change through active engagement’. The work identifies design’s role in creating interventions that better engage people with the surrounding natural world, yielding long-term mutual benefits. The objective is to foster active public–nature engagement, identifying barriers, opportunities and pitfalls in nature-engaged interaction(s).

Investigating the role of geographical location in public engagement with science we examine the West Cumbria Managing Radioactive Waste Safely (MRWS) Partnership’s undertaking of one of the most extensive local public engagements with environmental risk science in the UK. The case study highlights the transformative impacts of this three-year long local engagement on both science and the public. Differently from other invited public engagements, organised as experiments controlled by scientists in spaces set aside from the everyday, the Partnership’s lay members led a process unfolding in the place that was potentially at risk. The Partnership had the authority to demand that scientists addressed issues of local interest. We frame the analysis with the notions ‘re-situating technoscience' and ‘re-assembling the public' to illuminate how scientific knowledge claims were modified and a new local public emerged, at the intersection of public engagement with science and public participation in environmental risk governance.

Abstract:
The behavior of a wet clutch during engagement is of great importance to the durability of the clutch and the drivability of a vehicle. While many different factors influence the engagement behavior, the focus of this paper is to investigate only one factor, the permeability of the wet clutch friction material. Two test cells for measuring the permeability of friction material mounted on clutch discs have been developed. The test cells were then used to examine the effect of clutch material ageing through clutch engagement on the permeability of the material. The tests were performed on full size friction discs including the steel core prior and subsequent to testing in a wet clutch engagement test rig. The ability of the friction material to allow for oil flow both through the sliding surface layer and the bulk of the material was measured. The results indicate that repeated clutch engagements will increase the bulk permeability. However, the repeated engagements will decrease the ability to pass fluid through the friction material sliding surface. This contradictory behavior could be explained by a combination of an increase in pore size through repeated compression and the surface glaze clogging of the friction interface surface pores.

Abstract:
Abstract To promote successful aging, social engagement has been encouraged among older adults. Yet, thus far, research on older adults’ social engagement have been preoccupied with the close and intimate relationships between older adults and their families, friends, or caretakers. Little attention is being paid to how older adults may engage in peripheral social networks, civic activities, or public affairs. This symposium features four presentations that investigate older adults’ social engagement in these contexts. First, with the focus on interpersonal interaction with strangers, Yi Lu and colleagues examine the age differences in trustworthiness perception of unfamiliar faces. The second and third presentations focus on moral and political contexts. Minjie Lu will present the divergent impacts of age on the cognitive evaluations and emotional responses towards moral issues. Wong and Fung analyze older adults’ engagements in political discussions and actions and the factors that may promote these engagements. Last but not least, Nicole Fung and colleagues will present findings that generativity among older adults can promote sense of meanings and death acceptance, demonstrating the beneficial effects of social engagement in old age. Finally, Zhang will provide closing discussions about the implications and future directions of these presentations.

Abstract:
Since influencer marketing has become an essential marketing method, influencer fraud behavior such as buying fake followers and engagements to manipulate the popularity is under the spotlight. To address this issue, we propose a multi-task audience evaluation model that can assess both the loyalty and authenticity of influencers’ audiences. More specifically, the proposed model takes engagement information of an influencer’s audience, including likes and comments on social media posts, and predicts (i) the retention rate of the audience of the influencer and (ii) how the influencer is associated with fake audiences (or engagement bots). To learn the social interaction between influencers and their audiences, we build multi-relational networks based on the diverse engagement behavior such as commenting. Our model further utilizes the contextualized information captured in user comments to learn distinct engagement behavior of genuine and fake users. Based on the predicted loyalty and authenticity scores, we rank influencers to find those who are followed by loyal and authentic audiences. By using a large-scale Instagram influencer-audience dataset which contains 14,221 influencers, 9,290,895 audiences, and 65,848,717 engagements, we evaluate ranking performance, and show that the proposed framework outperforms other baseline methods.

Abstract Introduction As an innovative test of an alternative health engagement method during CONTINUING PROMISE 2011 a joint embedded health engagement team (EHET) was created and executed. EHETs may serve as US military alternatives for improved outcomes in global health engagement activities. Materials and Methods The EHET concept was to integrate into the host nation’s public health system to collaborate in direct patient care, contribute to comprehensive preventive health, and achieve intellectual exchange between professionals of similar disciplines. Results EHET resulted in greater satisfaction on behalf of the host nation and US health professionals, smaller footprint of US personnel and equipment, emphasis on host nation existing infrastructure and system, action upon needs already identified by the host nation health strategy, and optimal US military and security cooperation outcomes. Although this pilot test was a military to civilian engagement the concept is applicable for military to military engagement and across the full range of US military operations. The pilot test was well received by the host nation. Participants on both sides expressed positive feedback that EHETs should be the preferred method for health engagements. Conclusions Thoroughly planned and executed EHET engagements should bring greater, measurable positive effects than typical mass patient care activities. EHETs are especially suitable for longer duration or recurrent missions to build partnership, capacity, and security. EHETs should replace legacy mass care missions as the primary health engagement capability to achieve mutual goals while using US military resources on legitimate local health needs.

The article proves that auditing is a socially significant activity. Therefore, the auditor must ensure the validity of his opinion, which is achieved through ensuring the quality of audit procedures at all stages. Failure to ensure the quality of audit tasks is a reason to mislead users of financial statements of enterprises and auditorsʼ conclusions, does not warn users about financial problems and the possibility of bankruptcy, especially in socially significant companies. From December 2022 on the audit, quality control of audit services are waiting for radical changes in quality management. The article highlights the results of a study devoted to new requirements to quality management in auditing firms, resulting from the enforcement of the new standards: ISQM 1 “Quality Management”, ISQM 2 “Engagement Quality Reviews”, and the revised ISA 220 “Quality Management for an Audit of Financial Statements”. The design of a quality management system at firm level is considered in ISQM 1, including building up an organization system for management of audit quality, creating the essential conditions for performing audits. This standard will be enforced in place of the existing ISQC 1“Quality Control for Firms that Perform Audits and Reviews of Financial Statements, and Other Assurance and Related Services Engagements”. The new quality management system includes the following components: the risk assessment process of the audit firm; management and leadership, ethical requirements, acceptance, continuation of customer relationships and specific tasks; resource; performance of tasks; information and communication; monitoring and sanctions. ISQM 2 “Engagement Quality Reviews” specifies the requirements to reviewers of the quality of performed audit engagements. A quality reviewer is required to have knowledge and understanding of professional standards, current legal and normative acts, and understanding of firm’s policies or procedures used in the process of engagement performance; knowledge of the industry of a company to which audit services on engagement performance were provided; the professional experience in evaluations of scopes and complexity of the performed engagements, the professional qualification for quality evaluations of the engagement performance, including the firm’s obligation for providing this qualification. The abovementioned requirements cause the need in additional studies aimed at elaborating new schemes for actions and inclusion of engagements in job descriptions of quality reviewers.

Considering the curricular changes in the Philippines caused by the shift from K to 10 to K to 12, the study determined the impact of the ESL Programs of the old curricula to the university students’ academic and social engagements in a comprehensive university. Evaluating the ESL Programs in the old curriculum would enable curriculum planners and policymakers to determine the need of language programs in the university level. In the study, the characteristics of the students were also investigated as moderators in the engagements. Eight hundred sixty-six (866) university students from various disciplines participated in the research following the framework of Fox, Cheng and Zumbo (2014). Quantitative in nature using the structural equation model (SEM) in analyzing the data, the results showed that the ESL language programs have impact on the academic and social engagements of the students with the learning outcomes as moderators. Anxiety, as one of the student characteristics, played significantly in moderating the course outcomes and the engagements. Students perceive the programs to have more impact on their academic engagement than their social engagement. Implications for the inclusion of the English language programs in the university level are upheld.

ABSTRACT Designed to be used in an undergraduate audit and assurance course, this case introduces students to the concept of assurance. Students are asked to consider an engagement in which they would provide a written statement about the performance of an archery equipment manufacturer's products. The case encourages students to consider a variety of engagements that a public accountant may provide a client, and to achieve specific learning outcomes including increased familiarity with attestation standards, engagement criteria, objectivity, and professional skepticism. The analysis may be completed in a single class, and can be useful either at the start of the course to provide an introduction to attestation or at the end of the course to differentiate attestation engagements from traditional financial statement audits.

Abstract:
AbstractThis study analyzes how others engage rural and urban Mozambican infants during naturalistic observations, and how the proportion of time spent in different engagements relates to infants' language development over the second year of life. Using an extended version of Bakeman and Adamson's (1984) categorization of infant engagement, we investigated to what extent a detailed analysis of infant engagement can contribute to our understanding of vocabulary development in natural settings. In addition, we explored how the different infant engagements relate to vocabulary size, and how these differ between the two communities. Results show that rural infants spend significantly more time in forms of solitary engagement, whereas urban infants spend more time in forms of triadic joint engagement. In regard to correlations with reported productive vocabulary, we find that dyadic persons engagement (i.e. interactions not about concrete objects) has positive correlations with vocabulary measures in both rural and urban communities. In addition, we find that triadic coordinated joint attention has a positive relationship with vocabulary in the urban community, but a contrasting negative correlation with vocabulary in the rural community. These similarities and differences are explained, based upon the parenting beliefs and socialization practices of different prototypical learning environments. Overall, this study concludes that the extended categorization provides a valuable contribution to the analysis of infant engagement and their relation to language acquisition, especially for analyzing naturalistic observations as compared to semi-structured studies. Moreover, with respect to vocabulary development, Mozambican infants appear to benefit strongest from dyadic Persons engagement, while they do not necessarily benefit from joint attention, as tends to be the case for children from industrial, developed communities.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic had forced medical students to study at home, transitioning to an emergency remote learning mode of instruction. Its impact on students was unknown and likely to be of concern. Therefore, this study assessed cognitive, emotional and behavioural engagements of medical students during emergency remote learning, and examined its associations with regard to their age, gender, stages of study and ethnic groups. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to undergraduate medical students at one public medical school in Malaysia. Emergency remote learning was conducted via Microsoft Teams (synchronous) and web resources (asynchronous). The questionnaire consisted of four sections: demographic background, emotional, behavioural, and cognitive engagements with emergency remote learning. Three hundred twenty-nine students (n = 329) completed the questionnaire. The three engagement dimension scores were 3.36/4.00 (behaviour – act), 3.16 (cognition – think) and 3.07 (emotion – feel), respectively. There was a significant difference between the engagement dimension scores (paired data), implying that what students feel, think and act on emergency remote learning did not seem to align. Next, engagements of these students were not significantly associated with their age, stages of study, and ethnic groups, but male students had higher dimension mean scores for cognitive and emotional engagements. Emergency remote learning had a considerable impact on student engagements. The study calls for continuing efforts in improving effectiveness and equity in learning engagements among medical students in the post-pandemic era.

Abstract:
The problem of modern audit development is the trend of using classical approaches to the classification of audit in determining the areas of improvement of organizational and methodological foundations of the engagements in which the subject matter are various objects. Determining the key principles of development of the organization and methods of performing audit services requires an in-depth analysis of the historical development of the audit, determining its further development, taking into account historical landmarks. The aim of the study is to systematize current trends in audit development and assurance engagements, to investigate trends in regulation of assurance engagements as a whole and assurance engagements other than audit or review of historical financial information, to justify the development of national practice of standardization of their implementation. Trends in the development of auditing in the historical context are systematized in accordance with the processes of using the term "assurance engagement". The historical stages of introducing the concept of "assurance engagement" into audit practice are revealed. The trends in the formation of assurance engagements other than audit or review of historical financial information, in International Standards of Quality Control, Auditing, Other Assurance, Related Services are specified. Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Problem The attachment of a person’s “self” to “role” has been studied from a variety of perspectives by numerous social scientists since 1990. However, scholars are divided on the issues of definition and measurement of engagement. Also, the incremental validity of one engagement measure over the other in predicting performance has not been examined. Therefore, this study attempts to review, test, and examine the incremental validity of different operational definitions of engagement in light of the self and role theory. The Solution ANOVA conducted using 317 knowledge workers from different companies in India indicates that personal engagement, work engagement, and job engagement differ significantly from each other. Next, the results of step-wise regression indicate incremental validity of work engagement over other types of engagements in predicting task performance. However, personal engagement remains the strongest predictor of task performance. The Stakeholders The results of this study are expected to help human resource development (HRD) scholars make more informed decision while choosing a particular engagement measure. The results also encourage practitioners to use work engagement scale to explain their employees’ performance, at least in the Indian context.

Abstract:
Civil society has been an active mobilisational and agitational force in the resource conflicts of the Niger Delta region in Nigeria. The paper examines the gender segment of civil society and its character, forms and roles in these conflicts. The central argument is that marginality can be a basis of gendered movements and their engagement in struggles for justice, accommodation and fair access to benefits. Utilising secondary data and primary data elicited from oral interviews, the study identifies and categorises women groupings and identifies their roles and engagements in the oil economy. It finds that community women organisations (CWOs), with the support of numerous grass-roots women organisations, are the most active and frequently engaged in the local oil economies, where they have constructed and appropriated traditional women protests as an instrument of engagement. The paper notes the implications of women protest engagements and particularly their exasperation with previous engagements, the depth of their commitments, and the extension of the struggle beyond the threshold of normal social behaviour.

Abstract:
The ‘academic orthodoxy’ (Brookfield 1986) of student engagement is questioned by Zepke, who suggests that it supports ‘a neoliberal ideology’ (2014: 698). In reply, Trowler argues that Zepke fails to explain the mechanisms linking neoliberalism to the concepts and practices of student engagement (2015: 336). In this article, I respond to the Zepke-Trowler debate with an analysis of student engagement policies that illuminates the role of discourse as one mechanism linking neoliberal values with practices of student engagement. Through a corpus-based Critical Discourse Analysis, I demonstrate a persistent and alarming omission of human labour from university policy texts. Instead, the engagements of students and staff are attributed to technology, documents and frameworks. Student engagement is discussed as a commodity to be embedded and marketed back to students in a way that yields an ‘exchange value’ (Marx 1867) for universities.

Abstract:
Guidance for the traditional attest function recently has been expanded to provide directions to independent accountants performing engagements on forecasted financial statements (“Financial Forecasts and Projections,” AICPA [1992, AT 200]). Although the use of forecasted financial information in lending decisions has been extensively examined in previous research, the extent to which engagements identified by “Financial Forecasts and Projections” actually affect users' decisions and perceptions has not been determined. This study examines whether decisions and perceptions of commercial lenders are influenced by the level of accountant involvement (no involvement, a compilation engagement, or an examination engagement) with a hypothetical loan candidate's forecasted financial statements. The results of this study indicate that bankers consider the extent of accountant involvement with forecasted financial statements in their lending decisions. In addition, a significant interaction between the level of accountant involvement with historical financial statements and forecasted financial statements indicates that this effect is more pronounced when the accountant also audits the loan candidate's historical financial statements. However, bankers' perceptions of the responsibilities assumed and assurances provided by the accountant in these engagements differ from statements in accountants' reports. These inconsistencies suggest the need for the AICPA to modify current accountants' reports to communicate more clearly the nature of these engagements and to provide further education to users.
