Abstract:

Abstract:
The political engagement of individuals has complexly evolved in a borderless world brought by various developments in technology. This study revisits how various predictors, including personality traits such as extraversion and openness to experience, political efficacy, and online (FB) engagement, influence offline political engagements. Using quantitative techniques, the data gathered from a survey with 120 respondents in Cebu City, Philippines, was analyzed using the R software to generate descriptive statistics, correlation, simple linear regression, and multiple regression. A salient finding shows that the respondents’ level of extraversion, openness to experience, and political efficacy is high, while the level of political engagement is low online and offline. While online (FB) political engagement alone highly predicts offline political engagement behavior, all other independent variables (extraversion, openness to experience, and political efficacy) modeled as one attributes a very low effect towards offline political engagement. The model that includes all predictors have produced significant result that strongly supports this study’s central claim. Further, the study discussed the non-engagement of Cebuanos and commenced with suggestions on how Facebook (FB) can further influence an individual’s political engagements as a social media platform. While the publics’ engagements on political issues are vital to democratic societies, the study stressed social media's crucial influence on safeguarding democracies, human rights, and social justice.

Abstract:
Abstract This study aimed to assess the association between social engagement and conversion from Cognitive Impairment No Dementia (CIND) to dementia and to investigate the mediating role of cognitive and physical engagements on that relationship. Data from two waves (2010 and 2014) of the psychosocial and core modules of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) were used. The sample consisted of 929 people who had CIND in 2010 and participated in the survey in 2014. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) with eight indicators of social engagement (activities with children, volunteering with youth/others, attending educational course/organization, meeting up, speaking on the phone, writing or emailing) found three groups: formal and informal social engagement (20.7%), informal social engagement only (48.9%), and low social engagement (30.5%). Binary logistic regression analysis showed sub groups with higher levels and greater variety of social engagements were associated with lower probability of conversion to dementia in four years. Path analysis with structural equation modeling (SEM) framework showed the relationship between patterns of social engagement and lower conversion to dementia was mediated by having higher engagement in cognitive activities (e.g. home maintenance, playing sports), but not by engagement in physical activities (e.g. playing games, using computer). Results from this study implied (1) promoting active social engagement may be a promising intervention to prevent or delay conversion from CIND to dementia, and (2) promoting social engagement may be a particularly effective and efficient strategy since it promotes other activity engagements that may itself prevent or delay conversion from CIND to dementia.

Abstract:
Engagement quality (concurring partner) review is an important part of the audit review process. It is one quality control mechanism used by public accounting firms to monitor the quality of audit engagements. The engagement quality reviewer serves as an evaluator of the performance of the engagement partner and engagement team. Concerns about the effectiveness of existing firm concurring partner review practices have led to increased partner sanctions imposed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In addition, Section 103 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 directs the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) to develop an auditing standard on engagement quality review. This practice note reports on an analysis of six major firms' written guidance and practice aids for engagement quality review. Our comparison of the firms' guidance shows some differences in the assignment of engagement quality reviewer, the participation of the engagement quality reviewer in audit planning, the extensiveness of practice aids, and the involvement of engagement quality reviewer during the course of audit engagements. Lastly, we identify a number of research questions and practice implications.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract The imperative of knowledge based and inclusive development is making universities to realign their teaching and research missions to embrace community engagement. Using case studies of three universities in Nigeria, this paper examines how different types of Universities in Nigeria carry out community engagement and the nature of the benefits that accrues from the engagement. It also analyses the existing university policy framework with respect to university community engagement with a view to identifying the effectiveness of these policies in engendering university-community engagement in Nigeria. The findings revealed that the emerging policy to support community engagement at the universities does not provide for adequate framework to engender an effective university-community engagement. Besides, the reward systems of the universities do not support community engagement as a valid form of scholarship. Most of the university engagements are formal engagements with little or no link to immediate local communities. There is the need for a policy re-orientation that first integrates the principles of infusion model as a framework of the university community engagement policy. Secondly, the university community engagement policy must reward and recognize community engagement as a valid kind of scholarship among academics. This is a sine qua non in increasing university contributions to the development of their immediate communities.

Abstract:
The key to understanding Islam and civil society is the state. However, this key issue has been decentered due to the prevailing focus in the literature, that is the compatibility/incompatibility between Islam and civil society. The findings of this thesis reveal emergent Islamic sensibilities and capacities that lead to transitions in state-Islam interaction. These findings call for a rethinking of the theories on civil society and Islam.
The study is based on an extended empirical research project undertaken in Turkey and Kazakhstan between 1997--1999. It focuses on the leading Islamic community-movement in Turkey, Gulen Community, which is not only national(ist) but also internationally organized in numerous countries. Gulen Community aims to reconcile Islamic ways of lives and faith with the secular institutional milieu. Gulen accomplishes its goal mainly (yet not only) through education, i.e., its numerous high schools and universities in Turkey and all around the world.
The main finding of my research contrasts with the juxtaposition of Islam and the state in the literature: Gulen creates the alternative pathways of engagements with the state. The engagements range from domestic symbolic politics and negotiations to international alliances. The thesis examines the engagements in three distinct spheres, i.e., the national education, international undertakings and the gender order. As ethnographic research in Istanbul and Almati revealed, the domestically uneasy interactions between Gulen and the state take the form of overt alliances at the international level. I argue that Gulen's strong identification with the 'nation as the state' facilitates its engagements with the is Republic. Moreover, Gulen's inheritance of the gender strategies of the founding fathers of the nation contributes further to the congruence between Gulen and the state.
My argument is that the engagements can largely be explained by the elective affinities between Islam and the nation-state, which are analyzed at three levels: identity, state and the international world order. The thesis reveals that further research has to be done on the following question: Is the Turkish state in the process of creating a nationalist, non-threatening and pro-state Islam?

Abstract:

Abstract:
A substantial body of literature has examined supply side influences on museum visitors' consumption patterns, stressing the importance of the physical museum environment on visitors' willingness to engage and interact. Previous research in the physical context of museums is mainly focused on the labels, how many exhibits a visitor attends and for how long, but the level of actual engagement has not deservedly been studied. Also, the museum visitor experience has been argued to be influenced by not only the physical environment but also social and psychological factors and the agenda visitors bring with them . This study investigated the visitor agenda in greater detail, examining demand side influences on visitor engagement with museum exhibits, in an attempt to enhance understanding of consumer behaviour in museums from a cognitive perspective. A post-positivism perspective and a mixed-method approach were undertaken as core methodology. First, the main constructs were drawn from a review of the relevant literature on engagement, interaction with museum exhibits, consumer behaviour and further developed by means of 23 in-depth interviews, observations and photographic data with museum visitors to scrutinise how visitors behaved in practice. Second, a structural model (Partial Least Squares), including formative and reflective constructs, was subsequently tested and refined. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire survey among 535 visitors at Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery, one of the UK's most visited attractions. Engagement was found to be predicted by prior knowledge of the museum, visitors' level of cultural capital and motivation to be entertained, casting into doubt the relationship between engagement and motivation to learn in museums. The research suggests the need for museums to construct exhibits around the familiar, build connections with visitors prior to their visit through information sharing, and realise more challenging ways to engage those visitors driven by desire to learn. This study makes a contribution to heritage marketing and consumer behaviour studies with regard to exploring the concept of engagement and visitors' interaction. Future research should differentiate types of engagement with regard to museum visitors (e.g. passive/interactive).

Abstract:
The influence of leadership engagement strategies on employee engagement affects the retail distribution industry in the form of lower productivity, decreased profitability, and reduced sustainability. In 2017, the retail distribution industry lost more than $50 billion annually due to leader's inability to develop and implement robust leadership strategies to engage employees. The purpose of this single case study was to explore the influence of leadership strategies on employee engagement used by leaders in the retail distribution industry in Florida. Transformational leadership was the conceptual framework for this study. Participants were purposefully selected because of their experience implementing leadership engagement strategies that engaged employees. Data were collected from face-to-face semistructured interviews with 8 leaders in the retail distribution industry with 2 of years leadership experience and the review of organizational documents on employee engagement and productivity. Data analysis comprised coding archival documents, reassembling journal notes, and interpreting semistructured interviews. Three themes emerged from the analysis of data: adopting a supportive leadership style, encouraging employee ownership of task, and continuous knowledge sharing. The findings of this study might contribute to social change by providing retail distribution leaders with fact-based insights that can lead to increased productivity, enhanced sustainability, and improved organizational growth, which might promote prosperity for local families and the community.

Globally, construction fatality counts remain among the highest of all industries. As part of efforts to improve workers occupational health and safety, most companies provide workers with ongoing safety training. Yet accidents continue to take place, as there is a lack of understanding on how to increase the knowledge transfer that would help improve safety. The goal of this thesis is to automate and improve manual observation methods, presently used to determine construction workers' engagement during training courses by applying machine learning techniques to video images. This thesis proposes a framework to measure construction workers' engagement during training courses by unobtrusively analyzing engagement through body and pose estimation, codifying who is speaking and understating the predicted emotional state of a given worker through their facial expressions of emotion at specific lectures times through stateof- the-art computer vision techniques. The framework was prototyped on fifteen graduate and undergraduate students from a private university in the United States during four class sessions in a stadium set up classroom by three high definition cameras. The proposed system can enhance our understanding of learning processes within classroom contexts, while reducing the labor-intensive process of traditional observations methods, and allowing for the observation of a full class simultaneously. Further, the repeatability and standardization of objective observations will be improved as it will no longer depend on the skills of the observer and on his or her ability to capture and make sense of what was observed.

Abstract:
Learner engagement is a critical aspect of education. While technology is rapidly developing to act in increasingly personalized, and in some dimensions human, ways, we submit that a human community may uniquely support increased student engagement. This research explored the characteristics and effects of the interactions and relationships that constitute three distinct communities in education and examined their influences on student engagement. In the format of a multiple-article dissertation I present three articles. The first article reviewed relevant literature about interactions, relationships, and communities in education. It focused specifically on online and blended contexts and their connections to student engagement. Interactions, relationships, and community are linked to one another and support student engagement. The second article surveyed students in a blended college preparation program about the relationships they experienced in their academic communities of engagement with online and in-person instructors and peers, family, friends, etc. and how they influenced students' perceptions of their engagement. The support provided by the in-person community is significantly higher than that provided online (p < 0.001). Support also has a significant impact on perceived student engagement (p < 0.001).The third article examined the students' supportive academic relationships and their influence on student engagement through semi-structured interviews. Students report more supportive relationships with their in-person communities and higher engagement there. Supportive interactions, relationships, and community promote higher student engagement. Such connections can be forged online, but in the case of this research were more likely to exist in-person. Supportive communities and the interactions and relationships they encompass should be fostered in learning environments, be they in-person, online, or blended, in order to encourage improved student engagement.

Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis was to deepen the work engagement in nursing through its approach from three way, each of them represented by an article. The three procedures performed were an integrative review of the literature, an empirical investigation with quantitative cross-sectional design, and a qualitative research. The objectives of this integrative review were to critically review empirical research about work engagement in nursing and to synthesise the findings to better understand this construct within the nursing context. The objectives of quantitative research were to further investigate the engagement by delving into the relationship between the two psychological processes: one leading to engagement and one leading to burnout, by examining the relationship between job demands, control, social support, burnout and engagement in nurses. The objective of the qualitative research was to identify common aspects of professional experiences of nurses with high engagement, that allow us to further develop the construct focused on the nursing profession, and to apply in the collective contemplating all its peculiarities. The first study concluded that engagement influenced nurses’ performance, and therefore, it also had an impact on health-care outcomes. Engagement was not related to a personality trait, but it was a result of the interaction between dispositional factors, personal learning throughout their professional health-care providers’ careers and their work environments; as such, engagement was susceptible to modification. Positive work climate, social support from the organization and the influence of supervisors through leadership styles were factors that stand out as fostering engagement. The second study showed results in line with previous research, such as social support as predictor of engagement, and others that contradicted previous findings, such as control, which was not significant in a hierarchical regression of engagement. In the regression for burnout, demands were as antecedents as expected, however the most important result was the moderating effect of engagement on the demands-burnout relationship. The conclusions of the third article were that the fact of having a high engagement does not mean ignoring the negative aspects of work and organizations. Nurses who maintain high engagement are affected by the negative aspects, however the assessment of positive aspects as enjoy the work, the meaning of being a nurse, reward and autonomy allow to overcome the process of depletion of the engagement. A reconceptualization of the construct, considering the particularities of nursing is proposed, and it could be defined as "a positive, fulfilling state of mind related to the profession, characterized by vigor, dedication and intrinsic reward"

In ASME 2020 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2020-24020.

Abstract:
Abstract The global learning classroom is an emerging educational trend. The iPodia alliance promotes its peer-learning pedagogy by offering engineering classes with universities around the world. Students’ engagement as one of the important metrics to assess the effectiveness of education design methodology has been under considerable interest for several years. Tri-engagement, comprised of behavioral, cognitive, and emotional engagement provides a comprehensive assessment of learning success. This paper illustrates how a tri-engagement assessment was implemented in a global learning environment and examines the effectiveness of the peer-learning pedagogy in such highly diverse environment. This paper proposes a quantitative method using a modified Likert scale to assess students’ tri-engagement levels comprised of student and teaching assistant surveys, video observations, and analysis of facial emotion recognition, through preparation, data collection, and analysis stages. Comparisons of tri-engagements between the instructor-student activities and the peer-peer discussions, different continent regions, and on-site/remote learning are offered. Results show that the overall iPodia peer-learning activities experienced all positive tri-engagement levels and were not significantly affected by the region diversity (< 6% difference) or the remote learning (< 3% difference) of the iPodia learning classroom. That preliminarily proved that the iPodia peer-learning pedagogy maintains positive tri-engagements in a global engineering class. Additional findings were that the self-raters and observers experienced students’ cognitive engagement differently, and cultural difference would mainly affect students’ behavioral engagement, but unfamiliarity of the content may increase their emotional engagement.

Abstract:
Machining process modeling requires cutter/workpiece engagement geometry in order to predict cutting forces. The calculation of these engagements is challenging due to the complicated and changing intersection geometry that occurs between the cutter and the in-process workpiece. Solid modelers can be used to perform these calculations by executing intersection operations between cutter and workpiece surfaces at successive cutter locations. These operations utilize parametric surface/surface intersection (SSI) algorithms. For the large number of engagements that can occur in machining a complicated workpiece this can be a time-consuming and sometimes unreliable process. In this paper, in-process machining features are introduced into machining process modeling for 2 1/2 D end milling, and a feature based approach is presented for addressing the computational complexity and robustness issues in the cutter/workpiece engagement calculations. Geometric Invariant (giF) and Form Invariant Machining Features (fiF) are modeled to help represent engagement conditions analytically. Volume decomposition and composition algorithms are described that extract these two types of machining features from the removal volumes generated at each tool pass. Cutter/workpiece engagements can be analytically extracted from giFs and fiFs without applying repetitive SSI operations. This paper presents one part of ongoing collaborative research into developing Virtual Machining Systems. The engagement conditions that are found are inputs to machining process models that identify cutting forces, predict stability and that optimize the process.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Contour-parallel and direction-parallel machining strategies typically result in widely varying cutter engagements, excessive plunging and slotting, and sharp velocity discontinuities. In this paper, a new offset is introduced which maintains a constant cutter engagement throughout. By incorporating such an offset into spiraling tool paths, constant chip geometry can be achieved for the majority of the material removal operation. An algorithm for constant engagement tool path generation for convex geometries is developed, and experimental results are presented which demonstrate greatly reduced force variations while cornering.

Abstract:
The paper introduces the concept of engagement as a way of modeling and implementing flexible learning processes. The paper particularly addresses new learning demands, such as personalized learning, and defines ways of defining learning processes to support such new demands. It then shows how engagements can be used to provide guidelines for selecting information technology services that meet such new demands.

Abstract:
To disseminate policy-relevant messages based on APRA research at country and regional levels, the Information and Communication and Engagement (ICE) team encouraged country teams to build relationships with the media from early on in the programme. This is not something with which APRA researchers had much experience and, subsequently, the approach was taken up by only a few teams. Nevertheless, with support from the ICE team, those teams that pursued active engagement with the media proved very successful. This report reflects on the APRA programme's engagements with the media to identify what went well and key lessons on what could have be improved.
