Abstract:
Knowledge-based economy has become a major trend in international society in the 21st century. However, today?s strategies place a greater emphasis on sustainability than in the past, while continuing to emphasize the importance of education and its connection with labour market. There has been a re-orientation, where resource, eco-efficiency and innovation have become major elements for achieving national objectives and a relevant level of competitiveness. This article deals with 30 indices, which define the competitiveness of a specific economy, and involve knowledge parameters. They are classified into four main categories and one special category. They are then analysed regarding the participation of Serbia and their availability. The main focus of this paper is to give detailed analyses of energy indices, as a special category of knowledge indexes. It has been shown that Serbia, in many cases, was not included in the study analysis or that there was insufficient information about Serbia?s position. This article shows that only a part of the presented indices includes Serbia. It is concluded that a new, revised model is needed that will include more exact indicators.

A methodology to monitor the socio-economic impact due to a catastrophic event in high spatial resolution, high frequency, and in homogenous manner within the entire affected area is indispensable to maintain an up-to-date overall picture of the event in disaster response/recovery operations. Energy consumption of the affected area is a promising index for long-term recovery monitoring. The energy consumption of an urbanized area strongly correlates with its socioeconomic activity. When an area is urbanized and developed, more energy is required to maintain it. Once a catastrophic event interrupts these activities, energy consumption of the area decreases. We have been studying ways to monitor long-term recovery using electric power supply data and the night time city light imagery data provided by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program as indices of energy consumption. In this paper, we introduce these methodologies and their application to recovery process monitoring after the Kobe earthquake in Japan and Hurricane Katrina in the U.S. The impact and following recovery process of those two catastrophic events were clearly depicted. These examples have shown both methodologies to be promising in monitoring the spaciotemporal distribution of impact due to events independent of the type of hazard. Recovery monitoring methodologies introduced in this paper provide a way to determine overall trends in recovery of affected areas macroscopically. For concrete policy making and support, a more detailed view is also needed to evaluate recovery conditions of different social and economic sectors and individual households and businesses. Both macroscopic and microscopic viewpoints are needed to appropriate response and recovery operations.

Building Energy Models (BEMs) are a key element of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), and they are at the basis of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs). The main goal of BEMs is to provide information for building stakeholders; they can be a powerful market tool to increase demand for energy efficiency solutions in buildings without affecting the comfort of users, as well as providing other benefits. The next generation of BEMs should value buildings in a holistic and cost-effective manner across several complementary dimensions: envelope performances, system performances, and controlling the ability of buildings to offer flexible services to the grid by optimizing energy consumption, distributed generation, and storage. SABINA is a European project that aims to look for flexibility to the grid, targeting the most economic source possible: existing thermal inertia in buildings. In doing so, SABINA works with a new generation of BEMs that tend to mimic the thermal behavior of real buildings and therefore requires an accurate methodology to choose the model that complies with the requirements of the system. This paper details our novel extensive research on which statistical indices should be chosen in order to identify the best model offered by the calibration process developed by Fernandez et al. in a previous paper and therefore is a continuation of that work.

In earlier studies it was established that internal molecular energies (Eint) of alkanes can be reproduced, in an approximate yet reliable manner by means of a molecular-graph-based structure-descriptor U. It was also established that U is linearly correlated with the Wiener index W. We now show that the correlation between U and W is more complicated than earlier expected, and that it cannot be represented by a single line. We also show that a very good linear correlation exists between U and a modified version Wm(?) of the Wiener index, which is thus more suitable for modeling Eint than the ordinary Wiener index. .

This study presents a framework for assessing Pakistan’s sustainable energy security (SES) between 1991 and 2020 by estimating its composite index, termed “SESi”, and three sub-indices. The SES has three dimensions: economic, social, and environmental. A total of 26 indicators were chosen and normalized using the Z-score approach before being weighted using principal component analysis (PCA) or equal weighting. The findings associated with the indices point to a declining tendency between 1991 and 2020. The highest degree of sustainable energy security (SES) was reported in 1991, with the lowest levels recorded in 2004 and 2007. Between 1991 and 2020, 9% of SESi regressed. Economic dimensions regressed among the dimension indices between 1991 and 2004, followed by steady performance, while the other two dimensions, social and environmental, fell by 30% and 26%, respectively, during the study period. Further analysis indicates that the objectives of the policies implemented throughout the study period were only partially achieved due to the country’s heavy import dependence, energy expenditures, falling reserves and forest area, and inefficiencies in the power sector.

In the study, Johansen (1988) cointegration test and Granger (1969) causality test were used to analyze the causality relationship between energy prices and selected stock market indices. The research could not find a long-term balance relationship between energy prices and developed country indices. Also, while the causality relationship was determined between crude oil prices and NIKKEI225, DAX, and CAC40 indices, a causal relationship between natural gas prices and Dow&Jones and FTSE250 indices was determined. In the study, it was found that energy prices can be used for diversification in investments to be made with stock market indices of developed countries. This study is one of the most comprehensive studies in the literature that examines the relationship between energy prices and the stock market indices of G7 countries. It is expected to contribute to the literature in this way.

The concept of energy vulnerability is reviewed and discussed with a focus on Russia’s foreign energy relations, in particular those with European countries. A definition and a conceptual framework for quantifying energy vulnerability are proposed in the context of a review of recent research on energy vulnerability indices. In particular it is suggested that source country diversification should be reflected using the expected shortfall measure used in financial economics, rather than the Herfindahl-Hirschman or Shannon-Wiener indices, and that the former should then enter a calibrated function in order to yield expected economic loss. The issues of asymmetric failure probabilities and accidental versus intentional supply disruptions are then discussed with examples of recent Russian actions. Energy vulnerability measurement and modelling should ultimately inform policy. In particular, member states should legislate that no energy infrastructure project by one or more member states may increase the energy vulnerability of another member state. Additionally, European environmental policies, notably the EU ETS, should be amended so as to account for induced changes in energy vulnerability. Finally, member states should increase the level of transparency and disclosure with respect to gas import statistics and gas supply contracts.

Background: Livestock represents an important source of high-quality animal proteins. An inadequate supply of feeds and forages for optimum production is the major constraint to global livestock production. To avert the imminent protein malnutrition, the problem of animal protein scarcity must be addressed. In the present study, a five weeks’ study was conducted using 75 unsexed Anak broilers to determine the effect of fermented yam peels meal (FYPM) as a partial replacement for maize on the performance and haematological indices of finishing broilers. Methods: Seventy-five grower broiler chickens were randomly allotted to five (5) groups (T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5). T1 is the control. The birds were fed diets containing 0, 10, 15, 20, and 25% fermented yam peel meal as a replacement for energy source (Maize). Each group was replicated three times with 5 birds per replicate in a completely randomized design (CRD). Feed and water were provided ad libitum for the period of five weeks. Results: Results showed that significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) exist among the treatment with respect to body weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio. Mortality was recorded over the period of the trial, particularly in the group with a higher inclusion level. The experimental diets had a significant (p ≤ 0.05) effect on haematological indices such as Red blood cell (RBC), packed cell volume (PVC), haemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular Concentration (MCHC), white blood cell (WBC), and its differentials. There was also a significant increase (p≤0.05) in the platelet counts (PLC) with the corresponding increase in the fermented yam peel. Conclusion: The results of this study revealed that 20% fermented yam peel meal can replace maize in the diet of finishing broilers with better performance

Signals received by piezoelectric transducers (PZT) network can be influenced by many factors. Apart from environmental conditions, whose variability should be compensated, significant difference in a signal can be also caused by relative geometry changes of a designed sensors node, e.g. the damage localization and its orientation with respect to sensors location in the node. In the adopted approach a set of damage indices (DIs), carrying marginal signal information content and correlated with the total energy received by a given sensor are proposed. These are sensitive to the two main modes of guided wave interaction with a fatigue crack, i.e. its transmission and reflection from a damage. Detailed description of DIs detection capabilities are delivered in the paper. Two dimensional reduction techniques: Principal Component Analysis and Fishers Linear Discriminant are compared. The results of the data collected from specimen fatigue test are used to compare several classification models based on the emerged effective damage indices.

Recent advancements in computing, including the development of sophisticated graphing packages and powerful desktop computers have made the concept of graphical displays or graphical indices more timely than ever before. In this two part paper, graphical displays or indices are reviewed and discussed that can be used to analyze several years of hourly data (20,000 to 30,000 data points). The purpose of these papers is to show how graphical indices can be used to help a building energy analyst view large amounts of hourly building energy consumption data in order to quickly and efficiently analyze the data, check for errors, or establish time and temperature related trends over a large period of time. Data from case study buildings in Texas’ are used to demonstrate the indices. Part I reviews the literature on graphical presentations of building energy use data and graphical perception and presents two graphical indices. Part II provides four additional graphical indices in use in the data review process for the Texas LoanSTAR program2.

This paper examines the dynamics of connectedness among the realized volatility indices of 16 clean energy stocks belonging to the SPGCE and the implied volatility indices of two important stock markets—the S&P 500 and the STOXX50—and two commodities markets—the crude oil and gold markets. The empirical results show a unidirectional connectedness from the implied volatility indices to the clean energy stocks. Our analysis further reveals similar volatility connectedness behaviors among companies in the same energy production subsector. However, there exists heterogeneous behavior between different energy production subsectors over time. Further, we identify pairwise directional connectedness clusters among related companies, indicating that there are few possibilities for portfolio diversification within the energy production subsectors. Finally, through an impulse–response analysis, we confirm that the expectation of future market volatility of the S&P 500 index and the gold price plays a leading role in volatility connectedness with clean energy stocks.

Abstract:
The characterization of strength of earthquake demands for seismic analysis or design requires the specification of a level of intensity. Numerous ground motion intensity indices that have been proposed over the years are being used for normalizing or scaling earthquake records regardless of their efficiency. An essential point of this study is that a ground motion index is appropriate, or efficient, as long as it can predict the level of structural response. This study presents correlations between 23 ground motion intensity indices and four response variables: elastic and inelastic deformation demands, and input energy and hysteretic energy; nonlinear responses are computed using elastoplastic, bilinear, and bilinear with stiffness degradation models. As expected, no index is found to be satisfactory over the entire frequency range. Indeed, indices related to ground acceleration rank better in the acceleration-sensitive region of the spectrum; indices based on ground velocity are better in the velocity-sensitive region and, correspondingly, generally occur in the displacement-controlled region. Despite frequent criticism, the peak ground motion parameters passed the test successfully. A ranking of indices is presented, thus providing a choice of the most appropriate one for a particular application in the frequency range of interest.

This paper presents and discusses the application of a novel energy balance scheme for assessing energy efficiency in wastewater systems. The energy balance is demonstrated with a Portuguese real-life case study, using mathematical modelling to estimate the different energy components and to compute two energy efficiency indices. The total inflow intrinsic energy can represent a significant amount (>95%) of the total energy used in systems mainly composed of gravity sewers. The total input energy is significantly (four-times) higher in the wet season than in the dry season, mostly due to undue inflows (e.g., direct rainfall and infiltration). The potential for energy recovery strongly depends on the available head and flow rate at the delivery point, being 0.01 kWh/m3 in the current case, with a project payback period of 4 years. The energy balance components and the respective energy efficiency indices strongly depend on the considered reference elevation. Thus, a unique regional reference elevation is recommended in the calculations.

En este trabajo se comparan los índices aurorales AE, AU, AL y el índice PC de Troshichev, medido en Thule, durante perturbaciones geomagnéticas de distintas intensidades. Para la identificación de las mismas se han usado los índices Dst y AE. Se han analizado catorce tormentas, con valores mínimos de Dst entre -50 nT y -600 nT (86% de las cuales eran tormentas fuertes). El coeficiente de correlación lineal, r, entre AE y PC, es mayor de 0.65 para todas las tormentas analizadas; para el índice AL los valores de correlación son similares a los de AE; para AU los valores de r no son tan buenos. Durante las tormentas analizadas se identificaron treinta y cinco subtormentas, con valores de AE máximo entre 271 nT y 2218 nT. El 81% de las mismas tienen un coeficiente de correlación entre AE y PC mayor o igual a 0.6 y el 47% supera 0.8. Los valores obtenidos son independientes de la intensidad de la perturbación. Los resultados indicarían que el índice PC puede ser usado como un indicador preliminar de la actividad magnética global en el óvalo auroral aun durante grandes perturbaciones.

The continuous increase on the penetration levels of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) in power systems has led to radical changes on the design, operation, and control of the electrical network. This paper investigates the influence of these changes on the operation of a transmission network by developing a set of indices, spanning from power losses to GHG emissions reduction. These indices are attempting to quantify any impacts therefore providing a tool for assessing the RES penetration in transmission networks, mainly for isolated systems. These individual indices are assigned an analogous weight and are mingled to provide a single multiobjective index that performs a final evaluation. These indices are used to evaluate the impact of the integration of RES into the classic WSCC 3-machine, 9-bus transmission network.

The relationship between the resolvent and Estrada indices for the alkanes has been recently demonstrated. That relationship involved the first Zagreb index besides these two eigenvalue-based molecular descriptors. In this paper, the quality of the correlation is tested in the case of isomeric benzenoid hydrocarbons, where the first Zagreb index is constant. Extraordinary linear correlations are identified for all studied groups of isomeric benzenoid hydrocarbons. Additionally, the relationship of these indices with the boiling points of a set of benzenoid hydrocarbons is presented.

New evidence questioning the multidimensionality of the aromaticity phenomenon exemplified in what is called orthogonality between the classical (structural and energetic) and magnetic aromaticity indices and measures is reported. For this purpose, the recently proposed methodologies for the quantitative characterization of the energy benefits associated with the cyclic arrangement of mobile π-electrons in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are compared with the indices characterizing the extent of cyclic delocalization in the corresponding conjugated circuits. The reported close correlation between both types of indices implies that no discrepancies between classical and magnetic aromaticity measures exist provided the comparison is based on the indices of inherently local nature and/or the interfering contributions of contaminating conjugated circuits is properly taken into account in the description of aromaticity measures like topological resonance energy (TRE) or nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS).

Abstract Fullerenes are class of allotropes of carbon organized as closed cages or tubes of carbon atoms. The fullerenes with small number of atoms were not frequently investigated. This paper presents a detailed treatment of total strain energy as function of structural feature extracted from isomers of C40 fullerene using Szeged Matrix Property Indices (SMPI). The paper has a two-fold structure. First, the total strain energy of C40 fullerene isomers (40 structures) was linked with SMPI descriptors under two scenarios, one which incorporate just the SMPI descriptors and the other one which contains also five calculated properties (dipole moment, scf-binding-energy, scf-core-energy, scf-electronic-energy, and heat of formation). Second, the performing models identified on C40 fullerene family or the descriptors of these models were used to predict the total strain energy on C42 fullerene isomers. The obtained results show that the inclusion of properties in the pool of descriptors led to the reduction of accurate linear models. One property, namely scf-binding-energy proved a significant contribution to total strain energy of C40 fullerene isomers. However, the top-three most performing models contain just SMPI descriptors. A model with four descriptors proved most accurate model and show fair abilities in prediction of the same property on C42 fullerene isomers when the approach considered the descriptors identified on C40 as the predicting descriptors for C42 fullerene isomers.

The results of studies on the effect of planting time and various rates of mineral fertilizers on the formation of indices of energy efficiency of winter rapeseed hybrids of various maturity groups are analyzed. The significant influence of the technology elements studied on the main indices has been noted. It has been established that a change in the yield rate obtained by hybrids caused a change in the energy efficiency indices. Among the three hybrids studied, the highest energy capacity of 77,900 MJ was obtained by hybrid ‘Exotic’ under the first planting time on August 10 and application of N240P120K240, the maximum energy efficiency ratio of 2.34 was obtained by hybrid ‘Exagon’ under the first planting time, but in the variant without application of fertilizers.

To make the strategies for ensuring the energy supply security of a country, it is essential to quantitatively assess the security. This paper aims to present a methodology to evaluate the energy supply security of a country by using different indices of energy dependence and energy diversity, which have been raised as two main paradigms of energy supply security. This study also proposes two indices reflecting the correlation between a country’s energy diversity and energy import dependence to evaluate its energy supply security based on easily accessible data. The presented methodology and indices were applied to the evaluation of the primary energy supply security of Korea from 1991 to 2018. The results show that a country highly dependent on energy imports is not evaluated as secure enough in terms of energy supply even if it obtains higher energy diversity. This finding supports the importance of the correlation of energy dependence and energy diversity of a country to ensure its energy supply security. This approach could be further adapted to other countries and help them to make their energy policy and strategies.

Based on the currently available scientific literature, indices of cellular energy status, in particular the ability of elevated levels of carnitine in muscle tissue, may be associated with a protective effect on neuromuscular fatigue. The aim of the study is to investigate the relationship between cellular energy exchange and endurance in young athletes. Materials and methods. The study included children and adolescents aged 12 to 18 years. The main research group (94 young athletes) consisted of two subgroups depending on the nature of the training load - cyclic (46) and game (48) sports. The control group - 37 children engaged in physical education only at school. Special research methods: tandem chromatography-mass spectrometry and cardiorespiratory stress testing. Results. The indices of free carnitine in young athletes, depending on the type of sports load, have significant differences. The use of the Tukey criterion revealed that the content of free carnitine in athletes with cyclic loads is significantly higher than in athletes of game types and the control group. Differences in absolute and relative maximum oxygen consumption (MIC) in the study groups were significant. Evaluation of the absolute index of the IPC showed that in boys - athletes of cyclic sports, the level of IPC is higher than that of athletes of game types and control groups. Relative indices of the IPC show similar trends. Conclusion. It was found that the indices of cellular energy and IPC in young athletes of cyclic sports are significantly higher in comparison with playing sports. With a comprehensive study of the energy status of young athletes, it is possible to predict the level of physical performance. The contribution of the level of free carnitine to the variance of the absolute MIC index is 20.9% (p < 0.01).
