Full textBackground: Obesity may affect the respiratory system, causing changes in respiratory function and in the pulmonary volumes and flows. Objectives: To evaluate the influence of obesity in the movement of thoracoabdominal complex at rest and during maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV), and the contribution between the different compartments of this complex and the volume changes of chest wall between obese and non-obese patients. Materials and Methods: We studied 16 patients divided into two groups: the obese group (n = 8) and group non-obese (n = 8). The two groups were homogeneous in terms of spirometric characteristics (FVC mean: 4.97 ? 0.6 L - 92.91 ? 10.17% predicted, and 4.52 ? 0.6 L - 93.59 ? 8.05%), age 25.6 ? 5.0 and 26.8 ? 4.9 years, in non-obese and obese respectively. BMI was 24.93 ? 3.0 and 39.18 ? 4.3 kg/m2 in the groups investigated. All subjects performed breathing calm and slow and maneuver MVV, during registration for optoelectronic plethysmography. Statistical analysis: we used the unpaired t test and Mann-Whitney. Results: Obese individuals had a lower percentage contribution of the rib cage abdominal (RCa) during breathing at rest and VVM. The variation of end expiratory (EELV) and end inspiratory (EILV) lung volumes were lower in obese subjects. It has been found asynchrony and higher distortion between compartments of thoracoabdominal complex in obese subjects when compared to non-obese. Conclusions: Central obesity impairs the ventilation lung, reducing to adaptation efforts and increasing the ventilatory work

Full textINTRODUCTION Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) suffer musculoskeletal disorders in the early stages of the disease associated with factors such as change in serum substrates, functional capacity, quality of life and nutritional characteristics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional performance, quality of life, and respiratory parameters in patients with CKD not requiring dialysis according to the stage of kidney disease. METHODS We selected 26 individuals accompanied by the Nephrology Department of the Central Institute of the Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo, diagnosed with chronic kidney disease not on dialysis, and glomerular filtration rate below 45 mL / min, patients were excluded with rheumatic diseases, respiratory, neurological or who present limitations for the execution of functional tests. The following instruments were applied: Quality of Life questionnaire (SF-36), the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), was performed the following tests: the Six Minutes Walk test, Sitting and Rising test, and Hand Grip Strength test were also measured the maximum inspiratory and expiratory pressure and lung volumes through manuvacuometria and routine laboratory tests. RESULTS The results presented by the general group were compared with those found in the literature showing lower functional and respiratory capacity than healthy individuals of the same gender and age. The evaluated individuals were also subdivided into two groups by means of the glomerular filtration rate by the formula CKD-EPI, the first group of glomerular filtration rate lower than 30 ml / min and the second group with higher glomerular filtration rate or equal to 30 ml / min. Significant differences were found regarding: maximal expiratory pressure (P 0.04) where patients with poor kidney function had higher expiratory muscle strength, parathyroid hormone (P = 0.02) and phosphorus (P 0.04). CONCLUSION: We conclude that individuals with chronic kidney disease have differences from respiratory parameters, different blood tests stages of chronic kidney disease before renal replacement therapy

The present study was divided in 3 stages. On the first stage, it was investigated the validity of Futsal Intermittent Endurance Test (FIET), the functional profile of female futsal elite athletes and the assessment of performance during FIET in female futsal athletes during a competitive season: preparatory phase (PP), at the beginning of competitive phase (CP1) and at the end of competitive phase 2 (CP2). Sixty female futsal players (Under17, Under20 and Adult) performed the FIET, and the peak velocity (PV) was used to distinguish the athlete s performance. On the second stage, it was characterized the external and internal load of the specific interval training method for futsal (TRIEF) and also verified the accuracy of that method to achieve heart rate (HR) above of 90% of HRmax. Sixty-five female and 28 male futsal athletes performed FIET in order to determine HRmax and PV, and then performed two session of TRIEF method (interval of 24h) to compare the physiological responses of internal load (IL) related to relative HR (%HRmax) and perceived exertion (PSE) on different options of method. The TRIEF method is composed by four options of high intensity intermittent training in a shuttle run model (distances between 12-18 m), being the repetitions performed in options 1, 2 and 3 have 1 change of direction, whilst during option 4 there are 3 changes of direction per repetition, respectively. On the third stage, it was assessed 11 male and 11 female futsal athletes. After FIET testing, the players performed two sessions using TRIEF method (48h of interval), in order to compare within-subjects physiological responses related to internal load (HR, PSE and [La]), being option 2 vs. option 4 and option 3 vs. option 4, respectively. The comparisons were made by HR and [La] values measured at the end of each set of training and the PSE measured 15min after the end of sessions. The results of stage 1 showed no significant difference (p>0.05) of PV between categories Under-20 (16.6 km.h-1) and adults (16.8 km.h-1), and both were higher than Under-17 (15.5 km.h-1). The functional profile of female elite futsal players provided by FIET was defined for players Under17 (PV =15.5 km.h-1), while for players =18 years old (PV = 16.7 km.h-1). There were found significant differences (p<0.01) for PV throughout the season: PP (14.7 ± 0.7 km.h-1), PC1 (16.0 ± 0.8 km.h-1) and PC2 (16.5 ± 0.6 km.h-1). On the second stage of the present study, the within-subject comparisons related to IL (169 sessions monitored) showed no differences among the options (p>0.05), being the average value of four options for IL: 94.0 ± 2.1% HRmax (90.3  98.6%) and PSE was 4.6 ± 1.1 points (3.0  8.0). The IL results found in third stage were: option 2 (PSE = 4.4 ± 0.4 points and [La] = 6.05 ± 1.41 mmol.L-1) vs. option 4 (PSE = 4.7 ± 0.8 points and [La] = 6.23 ± 2.15 mmol.L-1) presented no difference, although, there were found significant difference between option 3 vs. option 4 (PSE = 5.2 ± 1.6 vs. 6.3 ± 1.9 points; p=0.013 and [La] = 8.25 ± 1.87 vs. 9.23 ± 1.45 mmol.L-1; p=0.004). However, the relative HR was similar in all of comparisons (p>0.05). Thus, FIET presents sensibility both to distinguish the age categories (=17 years vs. =18 years), as to monitoring the aerobic fitness progress of female futsal athletes during a season. Taken together, these findings give support for FIET as a practical and sensible test both to classify and to tracking the aerobic fitness of futsal athletes. Moreover, the accuracy of TRIEF method to individualize the high-intensity interval training in futsal athletes based on HR criteria (=90% HRmax) was demonstrated in all of sessions monitored in four options of the method. Finally, there were obtained strong evidences that the sessions prescribed using TRIEF method are suitable and specific to develop aerobic fitness in futsal athletes.

Full textThe overall aims of the studies were to investigate the effects of different training modalities on exercise capacity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with moderate or severe COPD and, further, to explore two of the physical tests used in pulmonary rehabilitation.
In study I, the 12-minute walking distance (12MWD) did not increase on retesting in patients with exercise-induced hypoxemia (EIH) whereas 12MWD increased significantly on retesting in the non-EIH patients. In study II, we found that the incremental shuttle walking test was as good a predictor of peak exercise capacity (W peak) as peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak) is. In study III, we investigated the effects of two different combination training programmes when training twice a week for eight weeks. One programme was mainly based on endurance training (group A) and the other on resistance training and callisthenics (group B). W peak and 12MWD increased in group A but not in group B. HRQoL, anxiety and depression were unchanged in both groups. Ratings of perceived exertion at rest were significantly lower in group A than in group B after training and during 12 months of follow-up. Twelve months post-training, 12MWD was back to baseline in group A, but significantly shorter than at baseline in group B. Thus, a short endurance training intervention delayed decline in 12MWD for at least one year. Patients with moderate and severe COPD responded to training in the same way. In study IV, both interval and continuous endurance training increased W peak, VO2 peak, peak exhaled carbon dioxide (VCO2 peak) and 12MWD. Likewise, HRQoL, dyspnoea during activities of daily life, anxiety and depression improved similarly in both groups. At a fixed, submaximal workload (isotime), the interval training reduced oxygen cost and ventilatory demand significantly more than the continuous training did.

Full textEpidemiological studies suggested that carbon monoxide (CO) urban air pollution is mainly related to cardiovascular mortality. In addition, recent experimental studies have highlighted that CO exposure was responsible for the development of cardiomyocytes’ pathological remodeling, which can render the heart more vulnerable to acute stresses. Therefore, the aim of this experimental work was to i) evaluate the impact of prolonged exposure to simulated CO urban pollution on the sensitivity of the myocardium to IR ; and ii) evaluate potential cardioprotective effects of regular bouts of endurance training in this model. 187 Wistar rats were separated into 3 groups : control rats, CO rats exposed during 4 weeks to CO (30-100 ppm), and CO exercised rats. Myocardial sensibility to IR was evaluated with a regional ischemia performed on a Langendorff model of isolated heart. Moreover, the cardiomyocytes’ function and calcium handling were evaluated at basal conditions, following a protocol of cellular anoxia and reoxygenation. The results of this study confirm that chronic exposure to CO is responsible for cardiac phenotypic changes, which are characterized in this work by an imbalance in the cardiomyocytes’ oxidative status, an impairment of calcium handling and iNOS expression. These phenotypic changes were associated in this work with higher heart vulnerability to IR. Another major result of this study is that regular bouts of endurance training conducted prior to CO exposure prevented the pathological cardiac remodeling, consequently leading to higher heart vulnerability due to IR

Introduction: As a consequence of the structural changes in the pulmonary parenchyma, the main impact of bronchiectasis (BCT) is the worsening in lung function, characterized by the obstructive spirometric pattern and, in a subgroup of patients, restrictive. In obstructive patients, it is common the use of bronchodilator (BD). Aims: To investigate which field test, six-minute walk test (6MWT) or endurance shuttle walk test (ESWT), is more responsive to detect functional improvement after BD, to compare the physiological responses between 6MWT and incremental SWTI and to verify the differences in the physiological responses in the 6MWT and ESWT among patients presenting with obstructive and restrictive ventilatory disorders (OVD and DVR, respectively). Methods: This is a randomized, double blind, placebo (PL) controlled crossover study, in which 32 patients with BCT performed, on separate days (48 hours), the ISWT, 6MWT and ESWT, preceded by either PL or BD (400 µg of salbutamol). The cardiopulmonary and metabolic parameters were monitored during all tests by a telemetry system of the expired gases. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in distance walked between the ESWT-BD and 6MWT in the PL and BD conditions (910 ± 589 m, 526 ± 80 m, 527 ± 86 m). The distance walked and the time duration time of the test in the 6MWT and ISWT were statistically different (527 ± 86 m and 6 ± 0 min vs. 443 ± 119m and 7 ± 1 min, respectively). Patients with OVD and RVD presented with similar physiological responses at the peak of exercise. Conclusion: ESWT is the most suitable test to assess the acute effects of BD on functional response; the 6MWT and ISWT elicit similar physiological responses at peak exercise and the type of ventilatory disorder cannot be differentiated by the performance on the ESWT and 6MWT.

This study aimed to explore differences in performance between chronic LBP patients and healthy individuals submitted to a set of isometric hip strength and lumbar endurance tests, and to identify accurate tests and ratios classificatory cut-off values to significantly discriminate patients with chronic low back pain and healthy individuals. Three hundred and fifty subjects (Healthy n=170 and chronic LBP patients n=180) were stratified by age, gender and physically active or sedentary. LBP patients were included if they had Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) < 20%. The set of tests consisted of: Isometric strength tests of hip abductors, extensors, flexors, deep abdominal functional test, and endurance tests of lateral bridge, frontal bridge, lumbar flexors and extensors. The LBP patients presented higher strength values of hip flexors (p> 0.001) and deep abdominal function test (p>0.001), but lower endurance on lateral bridge (p>0.05), frontal bridge (p>0.001), lumbar flexors (p>0.001) and extensors tests (p>0.05) compared to healthy individuals. The accuracy was considered acceptable for lumbar flexors test (91.4 sec; AUC = 0.84), lumbar flexors/extensors (0.95; AUC = 0.82), lateral bridge/ lumbar flexors (0.57; AUC = 0.79), frontal bridge/lumbar flexors (0.79; AUC = 0.75) and hip extensors/flexors (0.67; AUC = 0.73). Some chronic LBP patients, despite having acceptable score in functional scores, presented differences in lumbopelvic and hip performance tests and, based on some accurate cut-off classificatory ratios and tests, allowed to discriminate LBP patients, what may be considered in treatment program and decision making for patient\'s discharge when returning to higher demand levels of work, physical or even daily activity.

During endurance exercise, Tsk plays a fundamental role in body temperature regulation. Environmental temperature is the biggest determinant of Tsk, which is the result of the balance between metabolic heat production and heat dissipation to the environment. During exercise, Tsk response might be influenced by oxygen consumption (VO2peak) and the metabolic flexibility, both powerful predictors of aerobic performance. Increased skin thermoregulatory capacity and FATox rates are characteristics of highly trained athletes, while decreased oxidative capacity and Tsk rates and higher [La-] concentrations are characteristics of individuals with low aerobic capacity, at the same absolute submaximal exercise intensities. The purpose of this project was to analyze and compare the dynamic of Tsk in different populations with different metabolic responses during an incremental maximal stress treadmill test. For this purpose, we performed two studies. The first study analyzed and compared the correlation between Tsk and cardiorespiratory variables in high fit (HF) (n= 35; VO2peak = 56.62 ± 4.31 ml/kg/min) and moderately fit MF (n = 44; VO2peak = 47.86 ± 5.29 ml/kg/min) male endurance runners during an incremental test with stages of 2 mins until exhaustion, followed by a recovery period of five minutes. The second study analyzed and compared the correlation between Tsk and metabolic flexibility by measuring [La-] concentrations along with FATox and CHOox rates in high trained (HT) (n= 22; VO2peak = 58.57 ± 2.33 ml/kg/min) competitive endurance runners, moderately active (MA) (n= 20; VO2peak = 49.07 ± 4.67 ml/kg/min) runners and professional soccer (PS) (n= 23; VO2peak = 53.34 ± 3.67 ml/kg/min) players during an incremental maximal test with stages of 3 mins until exhaustion, followed by a recovery period of five minutes. Results of the first study revealed that the MF group exhibited lower VO2peak, speedpeak, Ventilation (VE) and higher body mass index (BMI) and fat mass % than the HF group (all p < 0.001). Tsk was significantly higher at baseline, and at 60% and 70% of peak workload (all p < 0.05). Results of the second study revealed that MA group exhibited lower VO2peak, speedpeak, and higher BMI and fat mass % (all p < 0.05) than both HT and SP groups. There were correlations between Tsk with FATox and CHOox rates and [La-] concentrations for all data points of all groups (all p < 0.001). These findings indicate that higher VO2peak and FATox rates and lower [La-] concentrations were associated with increased Tsk during incremental maximal exercise across individuals of widely different metabolic capabilities. These differences should be taken into account in the training and nutritional strategies for enhancing endurance and team sports.

Full textOur aim was to examine the effects of endurance training upon the metabolism of undernourished rats. For 16 weeks, male Wistar rats, divided in sedentary animals fed ad libitum (SF), trained animals fed ad libitum (TF), sedentary animals submitted to energy restriction (SER), trained animals submitted to energy restriction (TER) were studied. The trained animals exercised on a treadmill 5 days/week, for 10 weeks, with the intensity representing nearly 60-65% VO2max. The main results provided evidence that endurance training in undernourished rats (TER) promoted a pronounced reduction of body weight and adiposity, increased the relative muscle mass, recovered blood glucose to normal levels and promoted a better insulin/glucose ratio, suggesting increased insulin sensitivity, as well as induced an increase muscle glycogen content and enhanced VO2max. An increased gene expression of carnitine palmitoyltransferase II (CPT II) was also observed. We conclude that the results indicate that the combination of exercise and undernourishment led to a better performance.

Full textIt has been developed a high lifetime and biocompatible diaphragm to be used in a Left Ventricle Assist Device (LVAD) that is a reduced dimension totally implantable electromechanical device. It has been performed an endurance test on a textured diaphragm made of polyurethane. This test has evaluated the diaphragm resistance to be used in In Vivo tests with the LVAD implanted for fifteen days in calves. A natural endothelial cell surface has excellent thromboresistant characteristics. The quantity and the characteristics of the neointima formed into LVAD are determined by the material surface, hemodynamics of the blood through the device, and the physico-pathological conditions. The patch implantation into the abdominal aorta of pigs has isolated some normal variables that usually are present during LVAD utilization and that may interfere on the material biocompatibility. The evaluation of the materials characteristics has been enhanced through its implantation at the descending aorta wall in contact with blood flow. Different kinds of contact surfaces of specific polyurethane are tested in seven In Vivo experiments. This study is totally focused in the reaction of the blood-material interface. A histogical study is performed in the end of every animal experiment to analyze the interactions between blood and biomaterial. Its emphasized the quantification and qualification of the neointima over the blood contact surface, calcification, and blood depositions

Abstract: The lactate threshold (LT) identified in progressive test has been widely used to discriminate aerobic fitness. Alternatively, the rate of perceived exertion (RPE) present a threshold (RPET) in non-athletes, but it is unclear if this possible to determinate LT in athletes. The aim of this study was to verify the occurrence of RPET and its association with LT in endurance athletes. Twenty four subjects (13 endurance athletes - athlete group (AG) with age = 35.9 ± 9.3 years; body mass = 72.4 ± 5.4 kg; height = 176.0 ± 4.9 cm and body fat = 9.3 ± 3.2 % and 11 physically active individuals - non-athlete group (NA) with age = 28.5 ± 10.1 years; body mass = 88.8 ± 11.0 kg, height = 179, 6 ± 7.2 cm and body fat = 14.5 ± 6.2 %) performed an incremental test on a cycle ergometer, at 80 rpm, with initial load of 110 W, and increments of 47 W each 3 min. until voluntary exhaustion or inability to maintain the specified pace. The LT was identified by three different criteria: 1) - intensity of exercise that precedes an increase in lactate concentration in 1 mmol.l-1 on resting values (LT1mmol); 2) - intensity of the corresponding fixed blood lactate concentration of 4 mmol.l-1 (LT4mmol); and 3) - Dmax of the difference between a polynomial fit to the 3rd order of the curve formed by lactate / power output and a linear fitting curve connecting the end (LTDmax). The RPET was identified by Dmax of the difference between a polynomial fit to the 3rd order curve formed by the RPE/power output relationship and a linear fitting curve connecting the end (RPET). For GA the maximum power output (Wmax) and power output of occurrence of thresholds (I.e. RPET, LT1mmol, LTDmax and LT4mmol) were significantly higher than the values obtained for the NA (P < 0.05). Similarly, the same was observed for the %Wmax at LT1mmol (p < 0.05) and HR and %HRpeak at LT1mmol and LT4mmol (p < 0.05). The RPET in GA was found in similar intensity to LT1mmol (p > 0.05), and lower intensity that LTDmax and LT4mmol (p < 0.05). A small bias was found between the power output measured in RPET and LT1mmol (< 5%) and a large bias was found between the power output of measured RPET and other thresholds (LTDmax and LL4mmol) (> 5%). For the NA the REPT was found in higher intensity that LT1mmol (p < 0.05) and in similar intensities that LTDmax and LL4mmol (p > 0.05). Although a large bias was found between the power output measured at RPET and thresholds (LTDmax and LL4mmol). These results suggest that RPET may alternatively predict the LT identified in exercise intensity above an increase in lactate concentration of 1 mmol.l-1 over basal levels in athletes, however the RPET should to be utilized with precaution to predict to LTDmax, since RPET tends to underestimate the LTDmax in athletes and non-athletes. Full textBackground: The assessment of the lumbopelvic region is useful for many musculoskeletal dysfunctions. Several clinical tests are commonly used to assess this region, however, reference values for clinical assessments and results concerning method, reliability and error measurements of these tests have not been reported. Objectives: To establish reference values and to determine intra and interrater reliability, standard error of measurement (SEM) and minimum detectable change (MDC) of a set of clinical tests used for assessing the lumbopelvic region in asymptomatic volunteers of different gender, age groups and physical activity levels. Methods: For reference values, 152 subjects (79 men, 73 women) divided by gender, age group and physical activity levels, performed nine clinical tests: Maximum voluntary isometric strength of hip abductors, extensors, flexors and lateral rotators, transversus abdominis(TrA) muscle activity (using a Pressure Biofeedback Unit), prone and side bridges, trunk flexor and extensor endurance tests. To measure reliability, 33 individuals performed the same set of tests, in random order within a week period. Intrarater and interrater analysis were assessed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and the error measurements were defined by using the SEM and the MDC. Results: Reference values were established for each group and our results showed significant (p<0.05) differences concerning gender, age group and physical activity levels in clinical tests. In general, strength differences were related to gender and physical activity levels and endurance results could be related to interactions between gender, age group and physical activity levels. All tests presented good reliability indices with an ICC (95%CI) higher than 0.8 for the intrarater and interrater reliability; MDC values were greater than mean of SEM in all tests, confirming its usage for clinical practice assessments. Conclusion: Reference values are necessary to help clinicians in the evaluation of subjects and these results can contribute for clinical practice in providing clinical training targets. Also, this set of tests presented good intra and interrater reliability measures of strength, endurance and TrA muscle activity test as well as SEM and MDC values, confirming its use for assessing the lumbopelvic region.

Full textThe aims of this study was to verify the clinical implications and in the cardiopulmonary capacity resulting from acute cardiac morphofunctional changes and myocardial injury markers after a marathon, as well as the influence of ACE and BNP polymorphisms. Therefore, 74 marathon runners, which participate in the XIX International Marathon of São Paulo in 2013, underwent the following procedures: anamnesis, physical examination, fitness assessment, echocardiogram, electrocardiogram and a cardiopulmonary exercise testing. 24 hours before the marathon, a blood collect was held. Immediately before the marathon, athletes underwent measurement of weight and bioelectrical impedance to characterize the amount of body water. Immediately after the marathon, athletes underwent weight measurement, electrical impedance, blood collect and echocardiogram. 24 and 72 hours after the marathon athletes collected blood. In the seventh and final time between three and fifteen days after the marathon, a cardiopulmonary exercise test was performed. The main results were: a) There were statistically significant changes in all myocardial injury markers in the period after the marathon, which didn\'t return to basal values 72 hours after marathon, except to cardiac troponins; b) There was no linear correlation between the marker related to ischemia and cell death and the BNP. However, there cubic correlation between BNP and troponin, in addition to the correlation between all markers of injury related to cellular ischemia and death, with low effect on troponin in the linear regression analysis; c) Age and training experience affected the release of troponin and BNP, and intensity affected the others markers; d) There was influence of echocardiographic features in the release of troponin; e) The increase in lung capacity in spirometry as well as ventilation of the second threshold and peak in the cardiopulmonary test were significantly correlated with the decrease in haemoglobin occurred after marathon; f) The reduction of haemoglobin and haematocrit levels in marathon runners, 24 and 72 hours after marathon called athletes anaemia; g) There was no correlation between ACE and BNP polymorphisms and echocardiographic features related to the athlete\'s heart, but correlation with the release of BNP after marathon

The present study aimed to check the hematologic, metabolic and electrolytic alterations induced by exercise in Arabian horses submitted to field training during 90 days, when three Exercises Test (ETs) were performed on a treadmill: before the training, 45 and 90 days after it (TE0,TE45 and TE90 days, respectively). At the end of the training, period it was performed a 60-km endurance test to check the variables. Jugular venous blood samples were collected from 12 horses during the test in the following moments and speed: M0 – (basal); M1 – (3.5 m/s); M2 – (6.0 m/s); M3: TE0 – (7.5 m/s); TE45 – (8.0 m/s) and TE90 – (8.5 m/s) and M4 – (1.7 m/s) and after the recovery period (1 and 6 hours). After the 90 days of training, jugular venous blood samples were collected from eight horses during the endurance test at the following moments: before the beginning of the test (M0), during the test (M1, M2, M3) and 15, 60 and 360 minutes after the end of the task it was possible to observe, in the counting of erythrocytes, hematocrit and in the hemoglobin, leukocytes and neutrophils concentration, a light increase in the total plasmatic protein concentration during the ETs and endurance test. The glucose concentration, increased gradually during the ETs and presented a numeric decrease after the first ring in the endurance. The hormonal alterations revealed an important increase in of the plasmatic cortisol concentration during the effort, and an insulin decrease in the TE and endurance. The electrolytes K+ and Ca2+ presented changes along the TE, as well as K+, Ca2+ and Cl- during the endurance ride. We concluded that, after 90 days of field training with speed at 60% of the V4, there were hematological, metabolic and electrolytic adaptations which were necessary for the 60-km endurance test.

Full textAerobic training (AT) shows health benefits for older with Alzheimer disease, but the physiological mechanisms that explain these remain to be analyzed. The objectives of this work were to study the feasibility of continuous aerobic training (CAT) or interval aerobic training (IAT) over 9 weeks and to compare their effect on brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plasma level, aerobic fitness, cognitive capacities and quality of life (QoL) in older with AD. No significant changes in terms of BDNF plasma level and cognitive performance was measured but a significantly improvement of endurance parameters was found. QoL was improved after CAT. This work shown that CAT and IAT are both feasible and equally effective to improve aerobic fitness. CAT had a positive impact on QoL, but both aerobic training failed to induce significant BDNF responses and improve cognitive performances

Full textRecent literature suggests that mental fatigue worsens the performance of athletes during time trial (TT) cycling tests. Thus, the aim of this study was to verify if caffeine could reverse or block the negative effects of mental fatigue in a TT of 20km (TT20km). Methods: Twelve trained cyclists with experience in TT for at least 2 years, and performance level > 3 (34.3 ± 6.2 years, 179.3 ± 5.1 cm, 77.6 ± 6.8 kg, 13.8 ± 4.5 % body fat 58.9 ± 6.2 ml .kg-1.min-1; 367.0 ± 32.5 WPEAK), carried out five visits at laboratory: 1) PRELIMINARY: for selection of subjects and familiarization with the instruments; 2) CONTROL: three maximal isometric voluntary contractions (CVM) were performed, the highest torque found between them will define the value of 70% for voluntary isometric submaximal contraction (CVIS) in the following sessions. After the CVIS, the TT20km will be performed without cognitive manipulation or supplementation; 3) MENTAL FATIGUE (FM): execution of the sustained attention test (RVIP), CVIS and TT20km respectively; 4) PLACEBO: placebo capsule intake (FM + PLA) then RVIP, CVIS and TT20km test; 5) CAFFEINE: caffeine intake (FM + CAF), consequently performed the RVIP, CVIS and TT20km tests). Brain activity of the prefrontal cortex and primary motor cortex will be analyzed by electroencephalography (EEG) recorded before and after the RVIP test. Likewise, EEG of the prefrontal cortex and primary motor will be recorded during a submaximal isometric voluntary contraction, performed before TT20km. For the analysis of comparisons between pre and post cognitive task of sustained attention was used a T-student test. For the multiple comparisons, the mixed model was analyzed for the condition and the distance in the TT20km, and the best matrix was identified for each case, when necessary the Bonferroni test was used. Results: CAF improved performance in mentally fatigued cyclists at ~ 1.8 % for FM and ~ 1.7 % for PLA (p = 0.00) and increased ~ 4.4% for FM and ~ 3.6% than WMEAN on FM + CAF (p = 0.00). Cortical activation increased by ~ 4.8 % in the theta EEG waves after RVIP test in FM and reduced in FM + CAF ~ 8.8 % and FM + PLA ~ 4.8 %. The ratio of RPE to WMEAN was lower in FM + CAF than in other conditions (p = 0.01). The ciclists started the TT20km more motivated in first 2 km (p = 0.02) and finished with more pleasure in the last 2km in FM and FM + CAF than in FM + PLA (p = 0.01). Lower cortical activation during CVIS and greater neuromuscular efficiency was identified in the FM + CAF condition (p = 0.03). Conclusion: CAF blocked the negative effects of mental fatigue on CPF, improved performance, decreased PSE over TT20km and increased neuromuscular efficiency

Full textWith the purpose of evaluating myocardial alterations caused by prolonged physical exercise and whether these alterations influence the endurance horses\' performance during the races, 30 horses were evaluated, divided into three groups of ten horses each, being G1 composed by animals that performed distances of more than 100 km, G2 by animals that performed distances of less than 100 km and G3 by animals disqualified by metabolic alterations. The horses were evaluated in three distinct moments, T0 (pre-exercise, at rest), T1 (between 30 and 60 minutes post-exercise) and T2 (between 90 and 120 minutes post-exercise). Physical and echocardiographic examinations and else blood sample collection for the determination of cardiac troponin I and other biochemical tests were done. There was no difference in cardiac troponin I values neither between the various groups, nor between the moments. There was a decrease in the post-exercise values of the diastolic left ventricle internal diameter and an increase in the post-exercise values of the interventricular septal thickness. There was no difference in the cardiac functional indexes and the cardiac output was maintainded by augmentation of the heart rate. These minor echocardiographic alterations were more evident in the animals that were disqualified by metabolic alterations, and they don\'t seem to be related to myocardial injury, but secondary to other organic conditions. Based on these results, prolonged physical exercise doesn\'t seem to cause severe cardiac injuries in endurance horses.

Full textThe objectives of this study were to assess whether a different distances endurance races cause stress in trained horses, assess the effects of different distances an endurance races on the lymphocytes and relationship with the immune competence of equine athletes and investigate dietary supplementation with glutamine as possible mitigating this depressive effect of stress on the immune system . 33 well trained endurance horses were used, 13 at 80 km, 14 and 120 km and 6 in 160 km in 4 endurance rides . Half of the horses in each category received oral supplementation with glutamine to 30 days before and 14 days after the race. Venous blood samples were collected before (M0), immediately after the last veterinary inspection (M1), 3 hours after (M2) and in their farms 3 (M3), 7 (M4) and 14 days (M5) after. There was an increase in cortisol levels, ammonia and neutrophils, increase in neutrophils / lymphocytes ratio and reduction in lymphocyte counts at M1 and M2 in all horses. There was a decrease in LT CD4/CD8 ratio in 120 (M2, M3 and M4) and 160 km (M3) without supplementation and either a decreased in IFN in all animals. Horses that had received glutamine supplementation showed a decreased in CD4/CD8 ratio in 80 (M2), 120 (M2 and M3) and 160 km (M3 and M4) and late increase of IFN (M4 and M5) in 80 and 120 km. INF production was increased later (7 and 14 days) in 80 and 120 km horses that received supplementation and decreased in all 160 km. The concentrations of IL-2 , IL-4 and IL-10 increased after the race on all horses , but the increase was greater or more prolonged in supplemented ones. Based on these results, it was not possible to observe stress in these animals, or immunosuppression either, although supplementation has exerted effects on lymphocytes.

Full textThe aim of this study was to measure the effects of parenteral supplementation with selenium and vitamin E in predetermined hematic and serics parameters commonly used in endurance horse daily clinic. Six Arab and Anglo-Arab horses in endurance training were used in a Cross Over experimental design of two periods of 84 days each, divided in Treatment and Control groups. No treatment effects was detected for weight, packed cell volume, red blood cell count, hemoglobin, leucocytes, heart rate, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, reduced glutathion, urea, creatinine and lactatodeshidrogenase, creatinikinase, gammaglutamiltransferase or glutathion peroxidase. The lactatedeshidrogenase and creatinikinase values were high than those used as reference in both groups. In 70\'th day was observed a statistical difference (p < 0,05) for mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin parameters, with the lowest value in the treatment group. The following conclusions were extracted from this trial: 1. A parenteral supplementation with selenium and vitamin E had no effect in the examined parameters in horses training and competing in races till 60 km. 2. Despite the inconsistence of mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin finds, this observation can indicate an exercise adaptation tendency of this hematimetric values in horses with better antioxidant defense.

Full textConcurrent training (CT) is frequently utilized by physically active individuals and athletes in order to develop muscle strength and aerobic fitness. However, this training strategy may result in attenuation of the gains on strength and muscle hypertrophy in long term. This effect has been referred to as the interference phenomenon. There are indications that the magnitude of this interference may be dependent on the volume that aerobic exercise is performed. Thus, the aim of the present study was to verify the effect of aerobic exercise performed with different volumes on the acute performance of lower limbs maximum strength and strength endurance. Physically active men (n=21) were submitted to six experimental conditions performed in random order, three aerobic exercise sessions with different volumes (3km, 5km and 7km) followed by the maximum dynamic strength (1RM) test and three aerobic exercise sessions with different volumes followed by strength endurance test (4 sets of maximum repetitions at 80% 1RM). The aerobic exercise was a continuous treadmill run at 90% of the anaerobic threshold (AT) and all strength tests were performed in the leg press 45o. A mixed-model analysis with the volumes of aerobic exercise as a fixed factor and subject as a random factor was performed to compare 1RM values, total volume (TV) and maximum number of repetitions (MNR) of the strength training (ST) session. Post-hoc tests with Tukey adjustments were used for multiple comparisons. The significance level adopted was 5%. No differences were observed in 1RM values among conditions. The TV and MNR of the 5km and 7km conditions were lower when compared to the control condition. The TV of the 7km condition was lower than the 3km and 5km conditions; and the MNR of the 7km condition was lower than the 3km condition. No differences were observed in TV and MNR between the 3km and control conditions and between the 3km and 5km conditions. In conclusion, strength endurance performance was impaired when performed after aerobic exercise and the magnitude of this interference depended on the volume of the aerobic exercise. In addition, maximum dynamic strength performance was not affected by prior execution of aerobic exercise

Full textIntroduction: Carbohydrate (CHO) intake during long-term endurance exercise has been shown to optimize performance in athletes. Some recent studies have also reported an ergogenic effect when protein (PRO) is added to a carbohydrate drink. Furthermore, the coingestion has been related to the attenuation of muscle damage, seen as a limiting factor in muscle recovery. However, little has been investigated about the influence of such supplementation, compared to a placebo drink (PLA), in an Olympic-distance (OD) duathlon. Purpose: This study aimed to compare the effects of three different nutritional supplementation strategies (CHO vs. CHO+PRO vs. PLA) during a simulated OD duathlon, on performance and indices of muscle recovery of amateurs duathletes. Methods: In a crossover, randomized, double-blind clinical trial, thirteen male amateur athletes, mean age 29.7 ± 7.7 years, participated in three simulated OD duathlons consuming either a carbohydrate drink (CHO, 75 g); an isocaloric drink combining carbohydrate and protein in a 4:1 ratio (CHO+PRO, 60.5 g CHO and 14.5 g PRO); or a placebo (PLA) drink. The athletes were informed that the study aimed to investigate the influence of three different types of supplementation. After an 8 hours fast, subjects received a standard breakfast, with 1.5 g / kg CHO and 45 min later the protocol began. The intensities of the first running (10 km) and cycling session (40 km) were controlled using previously collected data, and the final running, 5 km, was treated as a time-trial (t5km). Blood samples were taken before, immediately after and 24 hours after each simulated duathlon and glucose and creatine kinase (CK) levels were analyzed. Isometric peak torque (PT) was measured at baseline and 24 hours after each test. Results: The athletes completed the OD duathlons in ~ 1h 51min. There was no significant difference in t5km between CHO (1270.3 ± 130.5 sec) vs. CHO+PRO (1267.2 ± 138.9 sec) vs. PLA (1275.4 ± 120 sec); p = 0.87; ES ≤ 0.1. The results of PT showed no significant changes between baseline conditions (302.2 ± 52.8 Nm) vs. 24h post-CHO (300.1 ± 41.4 Nm) vs. 24h post-CHO+PRO (292.2 ± 49.4 Nm) vs. 24h post-PLA (282.1 ± 43.1 Nm); p = 0.24; ES ≤ 0.4. Although CK results showed significant increase for all conditions when comparing pre vs. post 24h CHO (300%; p <0.01; ES = 0.93); CHO+PRO (82%; p <0.01; ES = 0.73) and PLA (190%, p = 0.01; ES = 1.04), no differences were found between the conditions in the different moments - pre, immediately after and after 24 hours (p = 0.32; ES = 0.3 – 1.04). Conclusion: In a simulated Olympic-distance duathlon, with pre-meal test containing 1.5g / kg of carbohydrate, the ingestion of CHO and CHO+PRO does not provide additional benefits when compared to a placebo drink regarding athletes’ performance and muscle recovery.

Full textDuring the past few years there has been an observed decrease in physical fitness within different patient groups. As a part of the rehabilitating physiotherapy treatment it is important to acknowledge the physical condition of the patient. Physical fitness testing might be difficult due to physical limitations within different patient groups. A broad range of exercise tests is therefore of importance in clinical practice. The aim of this overview was to describe exercise tests used in rehabilitation contexts, and to define areas of use and restrictions. The method was a systematic literature overview and data was gathered through medical and healthcare databases. Scientific articles were selected and put together to answer the questions in the overview. The result showed that exercise tests mainly described in the literature were tests performed on a bicycle ergometer, treadmill tests and walking tests. The tests were in several cases combined with rating scales. The tests were performed as submaximal or maximal tests to estimate VO2max or VO2Peak. Exercise testing was commonly used in rehabilitation of cardiac- and vascular diseases, pulmonary diseases and spinal cord injuries. Evaluation of an exercise program was the most common reason for using an exercise test. The question concerning restrictions of the tests could not be answered. The conclusion was that the most common exercise test was performed on a bicycle ergometer. Maximal VO2Peak or VO2max testing were mainly performed. The most common area for exercise testing was cardiac- and vascular rehabilitation. The most common purpose for performing an exercise test was evaluation of an exercise program. Further research is required in order to describe restrictions and implementations of the tests.

Full textIntroduction: Grade III obesity is related to risk of developing comorbidities that can influence the quality of life. In this population, respiratory dysfunctions can occur by the pulmonary complacency decrease and/or airways obstruction that can affect the functional lung capacity. Despite this, there are disagreements in the literature about the respiratory system behavior in severely obese subjects. Objective: To evaluate respiratory muscle strength, inspiratory muscle endurance, respiratory system resistance and, functional capacity and to correlate these parameters with dyspnea and quality of life perceptions. Methods: The participants were evaluated by spirometry, manovacuometry, inspiratory muscle endurance test, impulse oscillometry (IOS) and the six minute walk test (6MWT). They also answered the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Quality of Life Questionnaire (SF-36) and the modified Medical Research Council scale (mMRC). Results: We evaluated 40 women with mean age of 36.3±7.9 years and body mass index of 47.1±6.3 kg/m2. The spirometry exam did not detect pulmonary function dysfunctions (%FEV1: 92.4±14.8; %FVC: 95.3±13.4; %FEV1/FVC: 97.2±7.3 and %FEF25-75%: 86.3±27.0). The IOS detected alterations in the airways resistance in comparison to the predicted values (kPa/L/ s) (R5: 0.56±0.15 and 0.36±0.01, R20: 0.41±0.08 and 0.30±0.01, R5-20: 0.16±0.09 and 0.06±0.00, X5: -0.24±0.10 and -0.03±0.02, respectively) (p<0.05). The mean maximum inspiratory and expiratory pressures (cmH2O) were -114.7±24.3 and 132.0±30.1, respectively; and the inspiratory muscle endurance time was under the expected value in nearly 50% of the participants. The six minute walked distance did not show statistical differences compared to the predicted value. According to the mMRC, the participants did not have relevant dyspnea complaints and reported good quality of life perception by the SF-36. We did not find strong correlations between quality of life and dyspnea perception with the variables of protocol assessment. Conclusion: The IOS results suggest central and peripheral airway obstruction, which were not detected by spirometry. Patients reported good quality of life and low dyspnea perceptions. They had good performance in the 6MWT without respiratory muscle weakness but with limitations in inspiratory muscle endurance time.

Full textSkeletal muscle atrophy is associated with increased protein degradation in systemic diseases, which seems to be mainly related to ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS). However, little is known about UPS contribution to the heart failure-induced muscle atrophy (HF-MA). Likewise, aerobic exercise training (AET) has been established as an adjuvant therapy for HF and molecular mechanisms underlying HF-MA has not been clarified yet. The objectives of the study were: 1) to verify UPS contribution for HF-MA in 2 experimental models: sympathetic hyperactivity-induced HF (α2A/α2CARKO) in mice, and myocardial infarction model (MI) in rats and 2) AET effects on HF-MA and UPS. In α2A/α2C ARKO mice, we observed activation of UPS characterized by increased mRNA levels of E3 ligases Atrogin-1 and E3-a, deubiquitinating enzyme USP28, increased levels of ubiquitinated proteins and chymotrypsin-like proteasome activity. AET prevented HF-MA in the α2A/α2C ARKO by reducing of UPS activity. In MI model, rats displayed cardiac dysfunction and exercise intolerance with no signs of atrophy. However, Atrogin-1 mRNA and protein levels were increased. Therefore, alterations in Atrogin-1expression might precede atrophy and HF in this model. In conclusion, our data provide evidence for skeletal muscle anti-atrophic effect upon AET in α2A/α2C ARKO that is related, at least in part, to a reduced UPS

Full textCardiovascular response to various physiological stimuli is possible to monitor through heart cycle length analysis – heart rate variability (HRV). HRV has a vast application in sport concerning that monitoring via HRV is absolutely safe, cheap and simple for use. HRV indexes are different among trained and untrained subjects, they are augmented in response to endurance training and lowered in the case of fatigue and overtraining. The goal of this research was to determine if there is a difference between athletes from dominantly anaerobic sports (AN), athletes from dominantly aerobic sports (AE) and non-athletes (NA) in resting HRV and in autonomic response after tests for determination of anaerobic and aerobic capacity, and also to examine if there is a correlation of results of these tests and HRV parameters intra-group. The research included 75 athletes who were classified in two groups according to the dominant metabolic demands of the trained sport – the AN group consisted of 36 athletes (20.7±2.4 yrs, 1.83±0.07 cm, 83.5±12.3 kg), and the AE group consisted of 39 athletes (20.5±1.9 yrs, 1.79±0.06 cm, 75.6±8.1 kg). In the NA group there were 39 participants (21.4±1.8 yrs,1.82±0.06 cm, 83.1±11.2 kg) who were of same age and similar demographic characteristics as athletes. The examinees were subjected to anaerobic Wingate test (WanT) and incremental test for maximal aerobic expenditure (VO₂max) in different days. HRV was registered with Polar heart rate monitor and the data were analyzed in Polar Pro Trainer 5 software. Athletes from AE group had higher values of resting SDNN (standard deviation of NN intervals (normal-to-normal intervals – intervals from the peak of one R wave to the peak of subsequent R wave of normal QRS complexes) and RMSSD (root mean square of the successive squared differences) in regard to other two groups. We did not find any differences in HRV between groups during the recovery from WanT and VO₂max test. SDNN parameter correlated moderately negatively with mean power (MP) and peak power (PP) in rest and during recovery from WanT in AN group. The natural logarithm of low frequency spectral band (lnLF) showed the same type of correlation in rest with MP and PP, and it correlated moderately negatively with PP in recovery from WanT. The resting HRV parameter – lnHF (natural logarithm of high frequency spectral band) moderately negatively correlated with MP. The low frequency spectral band to high frequency spectral band relation (LF/HF) showed moderately positive correlation with PP in respect to kilograms of body weight (PP/kg) in rest and during recovery from WanT. In AE and NA group no correlations were seen with the results of WanT in HRV at rest and during recovery. In AE group resting NNRR (average NN interval) moderately positively correlated with peak VO₂ value(VO₂peak), and moderate negative correlation existed for maximal heart rate at the end of VO₂max test (HRmax) with SDNN, SD1 (short time variability of Pointcare plot), RMSSD, pNN50 (the percentage of NN intervals longer than 50 ms in overall number of NN intervals), total spectral power (TP), very low frequency spectral power (VLF), low frequency spectral power (LF), lnLF, high frequency spectral power (HF) and lnHF. Moderate negative correlation existed for heart rate at ventilatory treshold (HRvt) with the values of SDNN, SD1 and RMSSD. During recovery from VO₂max test athletes from AE group had moderately negative correlation of VO₂peak with lnHF, high frequency spectral power expressed in normalized units (HFnu) and LF/HF, аnd VO₂peak did moderately positively correlate with HF. In NA group augmented resting parasympathetic HRV markers (NNRR and pNN50) were in negative relation with heart rate progression during VO₂max test, and a dominance in low frequency spectral band was in direct relation with achieved values of VO₂peak. In aerobic sports PNS tone is marked. Reduced HRV in rest and during the recovery from WanT is seen in athletes from anaerobic sports. Augmentation of some PNS parameters in rest and recovery conditions from VO₂max test possibly suggests better aerobic capacity in endurance sports. Among non-athletes better aerobic endurance was reserved for the ones who showed dominance in low frequency spectral band in resting-state HRV.
