Abstract:
This in-depth life work on the kōlam ends as it began, in the Tamil diaspora. From suburban Maryland at the beginning of the book, this work ends with a narrative about a kōlam competition in Fremont, California. In this concluding chapter, the author looks back on the lengthy process of researching and writing the book and how her understanding and appreciation for the kōlam and all it represents deepened with time and life experience. She reflects on the way that her research encompassed an unexpectedly broad range of disciplines: aesthetics, art history and design; ancient, medieval, and contemporary Tamil literature and ancient Sanskrit literature; anthropology and ethnography; and even ethno-mathematics. She concludes that even though the ancient ritual of the kōlam has undergone changes during modern times, it is still very much alive.

Abstract:
Did Shakespeare write any comic plays after All’s Well That Ends Well (1604–5)? The conventional story has been that Shakespeare’s comedy ended early in the 17th century, despite having almost a decade of writing for the theatre still to come. If this theory is accepted, what factors can be put forward by way of explanation? ‘Endings’ argues that Shakespeare had a more consistent idea of what comedy was than is now often asserted. Comedy was his mainstay, spreading not just across the eighteen or so plays that can be listed under that heading but, beyond this, into his non-dramatic poetry, his histories, and—most powerfully of all—his tragedies.

Abstract:
This chapter details the life and career of Denise Levertov from 1972 to 1975. This period was marked by critical endings for Levertov, an extraordinary time of emotional turmoil and confusion. Three centrifugal forces—the end of the Vietnam War, her break with mentor Robert Duncan, and her divorce from Mitch—could have overwhelmed her. In the end they did not. She survived, and haltingly searched for a new life. Two books of poetry appeared. Footprints (1972) and The Freeing of the Dust (1975) both attested to her longing for freedom and desire to leave the past behind, and a collection of essays, The Poet in the World (1973), established her preeminence in poetics. As she groped toward the future, Levertov carried a talisman with her, a new understanding of her name Denise. Previously she assumed Denise derived from the Greek “Dionysus.” Now to her delight she discovered that in Hebrew its origin was in “Daleth,” meaning “door,” “entrance, exit/way through of/giving and receiving.” Obliquely she began to live into this new self-understanding.
