Abstract:
Methodologies for end use analysis have been developed by different researchers in the energy and water fields and in different areas in the world over the last 20 years. While there are core features associated with the methodologies and models used, the differences can provide insight into the ways that they might be improved, as well as the differences that may be required in different regions and when models are used for different purposes. In addition to reviewing the field of end use analysis and appliance stock models, this paper will focus on two case studies. The first is the Sydney Water End Use Model, developed as part of the Sydney Water Least Cost Planning Study. This model has been developed and used to project the demand for water in Sydney over the next 20 years under business as usual scenario, as well as allow the projection of a number of scenarios which include major investment in water efficiency and effluent reuse programs as well as regulatory options to improve the efficiency of water using appliances in stalled in new buildings. Key features of the Sydney Water End Use Model include the fact that it takes into account the fact that the efficiency of toilets in Australia has a much larger range than (say) the US, in that the dual flush toilet was introduced in (to date) three stages. The model also accounts for projections of demographic and land use change which has been particularly dramatic in Sydney, particularly the movement to smaller occupancy rates in dwellings, and towards multi-family residential dwellings. The second case study will demonstrate the linkages between end use modeling of energy using and water using appliances. A model of residential energy use in Australia has been developed as part of a research project to develop greenhouse abatement scenarios for Australia, and many of the appliances modeled overlap with the water end use model, including clothes washing machines, dishwashers, showerheads and taps. This more recent modeling exercise has revealed the importance of key assumptions in standard stock modeling techniques, and highlighted the need for earlier starting dates for stock modeling. The process and results of these two case studies will be presented, and conclusions drawn about further improvements in end use analysis for both water and energy use. The linkage between the use of backcasting as a planning tool, and the use of end use analysis as a pre-requisite for the development of a demand management program is highlighted.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to argue on the efficiency of Quality of Service (QoS)-based adaptive streaming with regards to perceived quality Quality of Experience (QoE). Although QoS parameters are extensively used even by high-end adaptive streaming algorithms, achieved QoE fails to justify their use in real-time streaming videos with high motion. While subjective measurements of video quality are difficult to be applied at runtime, objective QoE assessment can be easier to automate. For end-to-end QoS optimization of live streaming of high-motion video, objective QoE is a more applicable approach. This paper contributes to the understanding of how specific QoS parameters affect objective QoE measurements on real-time high-motion video streaming. Design/methodology/approach – The paper approached the question through real-life and extensive experimentation using the Skype adaptive mechanisms. Two Skype terminals were connected through a QoS impairment box. A reference video was used as input to one Skype terminal and streamed on one direction. The impairment box was stressing the stream with different conditions. Received video was stored and compared against the reference video. Findings – After the experimental analysis, the paper concludes that adaptive mechanisms based on QoS-related heuristics fail to follow unexpected changes to stream requirements. High-motion videos are an example of this variability, which makes the perceived quality sensitive to jitter more than to packet loss. More specifically, Skype seems to use if-else heuristics to decide its behavior to QoS changes. The weaknesses to high-motion videos seem to lie on this rigidity. Research limitations/implications – Due to the testbed developed, the results may be different if experiments are run over networks with simultaneous streams and a variety of other traffic patterns. Finally, other streaming clients and algorithms would contribute to a more reliable generalization. Practical implications – The paper motivates video streaming engineers to emphasize their efforts toward QoE and end-to-end optimization. Originality/value – The paper identifies the need of a generic adaptive streaming algorithm able to accommodate a big range of video characteristics. The effect of QoS variability to high-motion video streaming helps in modeling and design.

Abstract:
Wheat bread-making quality is influenced by a complex group of traits including dough visco-elastic characteristics. In this study, quantitative trait locus/loci (QTL) mapping and analysis were conducted for endosperm polymeric proteins together with dough mixing strength and bread-making properties in a population of 139 (MN98550 × MN99394) recombinant inbred lines that was evaluated at three environments in 2006. Eleven chromosome regions were associated with endosperm polymeric proteins, explaining 4.2–31.8% of the phenotypic variation. Most of these polymeric proteins QTL coincided with several QTL for dough-mixing strength and bread-making properties. Major QTL clusters were associated with the low-molecular weight glutenin gene Glu-A3, the two high-molecular weight glutenin genes Glu-B1 and Glu-D1, and two regions on chromosome 6D. Alleles at these QTL clusters have previously been proven useful for wheat quality except one of the 6D QTL clusters.

Abstract:
The Gold Coast Water Pimpama Coomera dual reticulation schemes' recycled water supply will be online in late 2009. In an attempt to achieve better estimates on both potable and likely recycled water end uses within this region, this paper presents a predictive model that utilises a range of input parameters, including: current use in the Gold Coast and the Pimpama Coomera regions at both a bulk billing and end use level; recycled water use at other dual reticulated schemes; and questionnaire survey of residents water source preferences for outdoor uses. Prior to the commissioning of recycled water, potable water is supplied through the recycled water pipelines. Water end use consumption analysis from the recycled water smart meter indicates that this supply source currently provides 20% of total household use with the majority of use being for toilet flushing. However, a range of factors have attributed to this low baseline level with evidence collected in this study indicating that higher recycled water consumption rates will occur once this supply line has been commissioned; largely due to the lower cost and fewer restrictions placed on this water source for discretionary outdoor purposes. The weighted amalgamation of a range of baseline adjustment factors assisted in the prediction of post-commissioning end uses for the Pimpama Coomera dual reticulated region. The predictive model indicated that recycled water end uses would account for 53 litres per person per day or 30.6% of total household consumption. The paper concludes with a brief overview of Phase 2 of the study which aims to compare actual post-commission end uses with the baseline situation and prediction, as well as the development of a robust end use model for dual reticulated regions.

Abstract:
Boiler tube failures usually result in frequent forced outages, and ultimately in costly extended outages for major tubing replacement in a plant. There are several failure modes that may occur in a boiler tube, i.e. stress-corrosion cracking, pitting, water-side corrosion, fire-side corrosion, fatigue failure, overheating, dissimilar metal weld fatigue, mechanical fatigue and erosion. In this research the failure modes of boiler and its end cracks due to the dissimilar metal weld is analyzed. Hence data are collected and explored to determine the cause of failure and as a solution ceramic ferrule is suggested. The use of ceramic ferrule in boiler tube can eliminate the crack occurrence or delay the process due to thermal properties. The prevention of crack will reduce frequent maintenance and thus the cost of operation can be minimized.

Abstract:
Lossy image compression can reduce the bandwidth required for image transmission in a network and the storage space of a device, which is of great value in improving network efficiency. With the rapid development of deep learning theory, neural networks have achieved great success in image processing. In this paper, inspired by the diverse extent of attention in human eyes to each region of the image, we propose an image compression framework based on semantic analysis, which creatively combines the application of deep learning in the field of image classification and image compression. We first use a convolutional neural network (CNN) to semantically analyze the image, obtain the semantic importance map, and propose a compression bit allocation algorithm to allow the recurrent neural network (RNN)-based compression network to hierarchically compress the image according to the semantic importance map. Experimental results validate that the proposed compression framework has better visual quality compared with other methods at the same compression ratio.

Abstract:
For travel demand models to provide good forecasts, they must be causal; that is, the models should represent the travel decisions made by individuals (and households) and should incorporate important demographic and policy-sensitive explanatory variables. This recognition has led to a shift from the aggregate modeling paradigm to the disaggregate modeling paradigm, evident in the widespread use of disaggregate trip production and mode choice models in practice. However, this shift toward disaggregate procedures has not yet influenced the fundamental specification of trip attraction and distribution models employed in practice. Developed and estimated were disaggregate attraction-end choice models that will facilitate the replacement of the aggregate trip attraction and distribution models currently in use. The proposed disaggregate attraction-end choice model is compared with the disaggregate equivalent of the gravity model.

Abstract:
In this paper I discuss two questions which the decision maker has to consider before she makes use of the method of cost benefit analysis. First, she has to ask herself if she shares the ethical foundation of environmental cost benefit analysis. If not, could environmental cost benefit analysis be adjusted such that her ethical beliefs are incorporated? Second, if the decision maker shares the ethical foundation of environmental cost-benefit analysis, is this method appropriate when there are individuals in a society that hold other ethical beliefs than those implicitly assumed in an environmental cost-benefit analysis? When discussing these questions I focus on two different perspectives – the deontological and the agency aspect of individual preferences. I argue that the answer to both questions is «no», though the answer to the second question is not as clear as the answer to the first.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to develop a mathematical regression model for predicting end-use energy consumption in the residential sector. To this end, housing characteristics were collected through a field survey and in-depth interviews with residents of 71 households (15 apartment complexes) in Seoul, South Korea, and annual data on end-use energy consumption were collected from measurement systems installed within each apartment unit. Based on the data collected, correlativity between the field-survey data and end-use energy consumption was analyzed, and effective independent variables from the field-survey data were selected. Regression models were developed and validated for estimating six end uses of energy consumption: heating, cooling, domestic hot water (DHW), lighting, electric appliances, and cooking. Regression analysis for ventilation was not applied, and instead a calculation formula was derived, because the energy-consumption proportion was too low. The adj-R2 of the estimation model ranged from 0.406 to 0.703, and the maximum error between measured and estimated values was around ±30%, depending on the end use.

Abstract:
To achieve the goal of reducing greenhouses gases, many countries have recognized the importance of energy conservation in the building sector, and such countries are considerably strengthening their building energy conservation policies by reinforcing design standards, encouraging remodeling, and requiring zero-energy construction. In order to effectively strengthen these policies, it is necessary to provide information concerning energy consumption in the building sector to ensure the technical and economic feasibility of policies in the marketplace, and to allow building users and policy makers to easily access and understand energy consumption characteristics. It is important to provide information that allows people to effectively understand the state of energy consumption by end-use (space heating, space cooling, domestic hot water, etc.) as part of the creation of a concrete plan for energy reduction that incorporates various service systems and is familiar to people. This is because providing such information plays an important role in establishing concrete policies and encouraging voluntary energy performance improvements by building occupants. South Korea operates the Korea Energy Statistics Information System (KESIS) and the information provided by this type of information system consists mainly of energy consumption by energy source (electricity, gas, etc.), and such systems remain inadequate for providing effective information on energy consumption and energy use intensity (EUI) by end-use (space heating, space cooling, domestic hot water, etc.) as part of the creation of a concrete plan for energy conservation. In order to accurately provide energy consumption information by end-use rather than limit the information to mainly consumption corresponding to energy sources, in this study, measurement systems were installed in 2014 ~ 2016 based on the overall sampling designs of previous studies for apartment units, classifications, measurement and data gathering methods for energy consumption by end-use. The annual statistical values for EUI by end-use were collected from the measurement data for 71 sample apartment units from May 2017 to April 2018. This data was calculated and analyzed using stratification variable levels for completion year, supplied area, and the heat source type.

Abstract:
In recent years, along with the available techniques, the possibilities of measuring movement biomechanics have increased significantly. The monitoring of horses’ activity is useful for carers, trainers and riders, because it allows them to provide the horses with appropriate health care, as well as to select appropriate diet and exercise intensity. This was made possible by modern inertia measuring devices (IMUs), non-invasive electronic devices based on accelerometry and rotation analysis. The purpose of this study is to review biomechanical tests performed on horses by means of these devices. Measurements obtained with accelerometers and gyroscopes are used in the fields of veterinary research, behaviour analysis and training. The quantitative and qualitative monitoring of horses’ activity can play a key role in ensuring adequate living conditions and appropriate training loads. The first research using these techniques was carried out as early as the 1990s. Such research is currently used on a wide scale in biomechanical studies of horses, as well as in practice. Due to the growing interest in horse riding, it has become a valuable tool in training horses and in assessing their welfare.

Abstract:
Abstract One of the main difficulties encountered when designing automatic tools for water end-use identification is the inherent noise present in recorded flow traces. Noise is mainly caused by the inability of the monitoring equipment to accurately register water consumption and data-loggers to register, without distortion, the signal received from the water meter. A universal filtering algorithm has been developed to remove noise and simplify water consumption flow traces with the aim of improving future automatic end-use identification algorithms. The performance of the proposed filtering methodology is assessed through the analysis of 21,647 events. Water consumption data were sourced from two different water end-use studies, having consumers and monitoring equipment with dissimilar characteristics. The results obtained show that the algorithm is capable of removing an average of 70% of the data points that constitute the flow traces of the complex events examined. The simplified flow traces allow for faster and more accurate disaggregation and classification algorithms, without losing significant information or distorting the original signal. The ability of the proposed filtering algorithm to fit the original flow traces was benchmarked using the Kling–Gupta efficiency coefficient, obtaining an average value above 0.79.

Abstract:
Buildings are among the largest consumers of energy. Part of the energy is wasted due to the habits of users and equipment conditions. A solution to this problem is efficient energy usage. To this end, an energy audit can be conducted to assess the energy efficiency. This study aims to analyze the energy usage of a primary school and identify the potential energy reductions and cost savings. A preliminary audit was conducted, and several energy conservation measures were proposed. The energy conservation measures, with reference to the MS1525:2007 standard, were modelled to identify the potential energy reduction and cost savings. It was found that the school’s usage of electricity exceeded its need, incurring an excess expenditure of RM 2947.42. From the lighting system alone, it was found that there is a potential energy reduction of 5489.06 kWh, which gives a cost saving of RM 2282.52 via the improvement of lighting system design and its operating hours. Overall, it was found that there is a potential energy reduction and cost saving of 20.7% when the energy conservation measures are earnestly implemented. The previous energy intensity of the school was found to be 50.6 kWh/m2/year, but can theoretically be reduced to 40.19 kWh/mm2/year.

Abstract:
e24002 Background: Patients with advanced malignancy have complex symptoms towards end of life. Some of these symptoms include febrile illness and infections. Benefits of treating infection and fever with antibiotics should be weighed out with goals of care for these patients. This study aims to understand the frequency of use of antibiotics and its association with symptom control in the last two weeks of life in advanced cancer patients on best supportive care. Methods: This is an observational retrospective analysis of medical records maintained for advanced cancer patients who have been enrolled in home-based palliative care services. 8 months data was analyzed. Sociodemographic variables, cancer diagnoses, symptoms, use and type of antibiotics prescribed were noted. Relevant statistical analysis was done using IBM SPSS v 25. Results: Of 256 patients included in the analysis, 133 (52%) were male. 57 (22.3% ) patients had gastrointestinal (GI) cancer and 45 ( 17.6%) had lung cancer. 175 (68.4)% died at home and 50 (19.5%) in hospital. 9 (3.1 %) patients had fever. 10 (3.9%) patient had respiratory, and 18 (7%) had gastrointestinal symptoms, respectively. Other symptoms noted were wound infection (10,3.9%), skin and soft tissue (5,2%). Other symptoms noted were wound infection (10,3.9%), skin and soft tissue (5,2%). Only 2 patients had urinary tract symptom. 49 (19.1%) patients had received antibiotics in their last two weeks of life. Intravenous (IV) route of administration was slightly higher than oral (28 vs 21 patients).More than half the patients received 2 antibiotics. Amoxicillin/clavulanate was the most common oral antibiotic and Cefoperazone/ sulbactam was the most common IV antibiotic. Symptom relief was noted in 9 patients (18.4%) however it was statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusions: Of 256 patients included in the study, 19% had received antibiotics in last two week of their life. Use of intravenous route for antibiotic administration was more than oral route. Gastrointestinal and respiratory symptoms were common cause for antibiotic prescription. Symptomatic benefit was noted with antibiotics use in these patients. Judicious use of antibiotics during end of life care should be considered.

Abstract:
AbstractWe use bilingual lexicon induction techniques, which learn translations from monolingual texts in two languages, to build an end-to-end statistical machine translation (SMT) system without the use of any bilingual sentence-aligned parallel corpora. We present detailed analysis of the accuracy of bilingual lexicon induction, and show how a discriminative model can be used to combine various signals of translation equivalence (like contextual similarity, temporal similarity, orthographic similarity and topic similarity). Our discriminative model produces higher accuracy translations than previous bilingual lexicon induction techniques. We reuse these signals of translation equivalence as features on a phrase-based SMT system. These monolingually estimated features enhance low resource SMT systems in addition to allowing end-to-end machine translation without parallel corpora.

Abstract:
Light truck vehicles (LTVs), including light-duty trucks, vans, minivans, and sport-utility vehicles, are generally larger than common passenger cars and are able to take on additional tasks. LTVs usually ride higher than other common passenger cars, which likely affects the visibility of passenger car drivers. The role of LTVs in rear-end crashes was investigated. The use of statistical models of unordered multiple categories was attempted, including multinomial logit (MNL), heteroscedastic extreme value (HEV), and bivariate probit (BVP) models. Four different rear-end crash configurations (lead and following vehicles) were defined on the basis of the type of the two vehicles involved (LTV or regular passenger car). General Estimates System (GES 2000) traffic crash data were used to calibrate the three suggested models (the MNL, HEV, and BVP models). Modeling results showed that there are sight distance and discomfort problems when a driver in a regular passenger car is driving behind an LTV. The probability of a rear-end crash involving a regular passenger car striking an LTV increases when the driver of the following vehicle is distracted. The analysis also illustrates that the probability of a regular car striking an LTV increases when the driver of the following vehicle has an obscured view.

Abstract:
Background: Controversy exists regarding the benefits and risks of warfarin therapy in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. In this study, we assessed mortality and cardiovascular outcomes associated with warfarin treatment in patients with stages 3-5 CKD and ESRD admitted to the University of California-Irvine Medical Center. Methods: In a retrospective matched cohort study, we identified 59 adult patients with stages 3-6 CKD initiated on warfarin during the period 2011-2013, and 144 patients with stages 3-6 CKD who had indications for anticoagulation therapy but were not initiated on warfarin. All-cause mortality risk associated with warfarin treatment was estimated using Cox proportional hazard regression analysis, and the risk of significant bleeding and major adverse cardiovascular events were analyzed with Poisson regression analysis. Adjustment models were used to account for age, gender, diabetes mellitus, use of antiplatelet agents, and preexisting cardiovascular disease, and stratified by pre-dialysis CKD stages 3-5 vs. ESRD. Findings: During 5.8 years of follow-up, unadjusted mortality risk was higher in CKD patients on warfarin therapy (hazard ratio [HR] 2.34 with 95% CI 1.25-4.39; p < 0.01). After multivariate adjustment and stratification by CKD stage, the mortality risk remained significant in ESRD patients receiving warfarin (HR 6.62 with 95% CI 2.56-17.16; p < 0.001). Furthermore, adjusted rates of significant bleeding (incident rate ratio, IRR 3.57 with 95% CI 1.51-8.45; p < 0.01) and myocardial infarction (IRR 4.20 with 95% CI 1.78-9.91; p < 0.01) were higher among warfarin users. No differences in rates of ischemic or hemorrhagic strokes were found between the 2 groups. Conclusions: Warfarin use was associated with several-fold higher risk of death, bleeding, and myocardial infarction in dialysis patients. If additional studies suggest similar associations, the use of warfarin in dialysis patients warrants immediate reconsideration.
