Abstract:
The Western Australia (WA) State Barrier Fence stretches 2,023 miles (3,256 kilometres) and divides Australia's largest state. The original 'Rabbit Proof Fence' fence was built from 1901–1907 to stop the westbound expansion of rabbits into the existing and potential agricultural zone of Western Australia. Starting as a seemingly straightforward, albeit costly, solution to protect what was considered a productive landscape, the fence failed to keep out the rabbits. It was subsequently amended, upgraded, re-named and used to serve different purposes: as Vermin Fence and State Barrier Fence (unofficially also Emu Fence or Dog Fence) the fence was designed to exclude native Australian animals such as emus, kangaroos and dingoes. In the Australian 'boom and bust' environment, characterised by extreme temperatures and unpredictable rainfall, interrupting species movement has severe negative impacts on biodiversity – an issue aggravated by the fact that Australia leads in global extinction rates (Woinarski, Burbidge and Harrison, 2015). The twentieth century history of the fence demonstrates the agrarian settlers' struggle with the novelty and otherness of Western Australia's ecological conditions – and severe lack of knowledge thereof. While the strenuous construction, expensive maintenance and doubtful performance of the fence provided useful and early environmental lessons, they seem largely forgotten in contemporary Australia. The WA government recently commenced a controversial $11 million project to extend the State Barrier Fence for another 660 kilometres to reach the Esperance coast, targeting dingoes, emus and kangaroos – once again jeopardising habitat connectivity. This paper examines the environmental history, purposes and impacts of the State Barrier fence, critically discusses the problems associated with European farming and pastoralism in WA, and touches on alternative land-use perspectives and futures.

Abstract:
Compared with most other birds, the emu, Dromaius novaehollandiae Vieillot, has unusually high tolerance to fluoroacetate (1080). The LD*5O for emus with evolutionary exposure to fluoroacetatebearing vegetation in the south-west of Western Australia was 102 mg of 1080 per kilogram. This tolerance appears to result from: the substantial capacity of emus to detoxify fluoroacetate by defluorination; the limited conversion of fluoroacetate into fluorocitrate by emus; and/or their possession of an aconitate hydratase which is relatively insensitive to fluorocitrate.

Abstract:
The French voyage of exploration to New Holland (Australia) between 1800 and 1804, commanded by Nicolas Baudin (1754–1803), made substantial natural history collections, notably capturing dwarf emus from the two distinct populations on King Island (Île King) in Bass Strait (December 1802) and Kangaroo Island (Île Decrès) (January 1803). Two of these emus survived their voyage to France, were housed briefly at the Empress Josephine's menagerie at Malmaison, and then the zoological park of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. Both died in 1822. With the wild populations on both islands exterminated soon after Baudin's visit, two watercolours, one by Charles-Alexandre Lesueur (1778–1846) and one by Léon de Wailly ( fl. 1801–1824), have been central to the history of the dwarf emus. However, an important contemporary engraving by Nicolas Huet (1770–1830) depicting the two surviving emus in captivity has been overlooked. This essay explores the history of the images of the now extinct dwarf emus, as well as the production and significance of Huet's engraving.

Abstract:
In 2020, several geographically isolated farms in Victoria, Australia, experienced an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus H7N7 and low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) viruses H5N2 and H7N6. Effective containment and control measures ensured the eradication of these viruses but the event culminated in substantial loss of livestock and significant economic impact. The avian HPAI H7N7 virus generally does not infect humans; however, evidence shows the ocular pathway presents a favourable tissue tropism for human infection. Through antigenic drift, mutations in the H7N7 viral genome may increase virulence and pathogenicity in humans. The Victorian outbreak also detected LPAI H7N6 in emus at a commercial farm. Novel influenza A viruses can emerge by mixing different viral strains in a host susceptible to avian and human influenza strains. Studies show that emus are susceptible to infections from a wide range of influenza viral subtypes, including H5N1 and the pandemic H1N1. The emu’s internal organs and tissues express abundant cell surface sialic acid receptors that favour the attachment of avian and human influenza viruses, increasing the potential for internal genetic reassortment and the emergence of novel influenza A viruses. This review summarises the historical context of H7N7 in Australia, considers the potential for increased virulence and pathogenesis through mutations and draws attention to the emu as potentially an unrecognised viral mixing vessel.

Abstract:
Abstract Emus are large flightless birds in the ratite group and are native to Australia. Since the mid-1980s, there has been increased interest in the captive breeding of emus for the production of leather, meat and oil. The aim of this study was to identify gastrointestinal parasites in the feces of emus Dromaius novaehollandiae from a South American scientific breeding. Fecal samples collected from 13 birds were examined by direct smears, both with and without centrifugation, as well as by the fecal flotation technique using Sheather’s sugar solution. Trophozoites, cysts and oocysts of protozoa and nematode eggs were morphologically and morphometrically evaluated. Molecular analysis using PCR assays with specific primers for the genera Entamoeba, Giardia and Cryptosporidium were performed. Trophozoites and cysts of Entamoeba spp. and Giardia spp., oocysts of Eimeria spp. and Isospora dromaii, as well as eggs belonging to the Ascaridida order were found in the feces. Three animals were diagnosed with Giardia spp., and three were positive for Entamoeba spp. based on PCR techniques. After analyzing the data, we concluded that emus were infected enzootically by nematode and protozoan species.

Abstract:
Islands off southern Australia once harboured three subspecies of the mainland emu ( Dromaius novaehollandiae ), the smaller Tasmanian emu ( D. n. diemenensis ) and two dwarf emus, King Island emu ( D. n. minor ) and Kangaroo Island emu ( D. n. baudinianus ), which all became extinct rapidly after discovery by human settlers. Little was recorded about their life histories and only a few historical museum specimens exist, including a number of complete eggs from Tasmania and a unique egg from Kangaroo Island. Here, we present a detailed analysis of eggs of dwarf emus, including the first record of an almost complete specimen from King Island. Our results show that despite the reduction in size of all island emus, especially the King Island emu that averaged 44% smaller than mainland birds, the egg remained similar sized in linear measurements, but less in volume and mass, and seemingly had a slightly thinner eggshell. We provide possible reasons why these phenomena occurred.

Abstract:
The drinking behaviour of four captive emus Dromaius novaehollandiae Latham 1790 was examined at the CSIRO Laboratory, Helena Valley, Western Australia. Considerable individual variation was found in the amount of water each emu drank daily, but for each bird the amount drunk was positively correlated with daily ambient maximum temperature. There was also considerable variation between individual birds in the number of sips of water taken daily, in the mean size of each sip and in the distribution of the size of sips taken in each drinking bout. Variability in drinking behaviour has been reported in other species of bird when their water influx has been calculated using double-labelled water. The availability of water to emus varies greatly in both time and space. More thirsty emus may do well when water is plentiful, whereas more abstemious ones may be favoured when water is scarce. Hence, variability in drinking behaviour would be maintained in populations.

Abstract:
A study was undertaken in the south-west of Western Australia to investigate potential vertebrate hosts of Barmah Forest virus (BFV), Sindbis virus (SINV) and Trubanaman virus (TRUV) following isolation of these viruses from mosquitoes collected during routine surveillance for arboviruses. Over 3000 animal and human sera collected between 1979 and 1995 were tested for the presence of neutralising antibodies to each of the viruses. The overall prevalence of antibodies to BFV, SINV and TRUV was 0.4%, 0.3% and 1.6%, respectively. Antibodies to BFV were detected only in quokkas (3.2%), horses (1.2%) and humans (0.9%). No definitive evidence of infection with BFV was detected in samples collected prior to 1992, supporting previous suggestions that BFV was introduced into the region after this time. Antibodies to SINV were detected in western native cats (16.7%), emus (4.5%), rabbits (0.8%) and horses (0.7%), and evidence of TRUV infection was most common in western grey kangaroos (21.1%), feral pigs (3.6%), rabbits (2.4%), foxes (2.3%), quokkas (1.6%) and horses (1.6%).

Abstract:
Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a bacterial pathogen that is the causative agent of erysipelas in a variety of animals, including swine, emus, turkeys, muskox, caribou, moose, and humans. This study aims to investigate the population structure and genomic features of Australian isolates of E. rhusiopathiae in the Australian pig industry and compare them to the broader scope of isolates worldwide. A total of 178 isolates (154 Australian, seven vaccine isolates, six international isolates, and 11 of unknown origin) in this study were screened against an MLST scheme and publicly available reference isolates, identifying 59 new alleles, with isolates separating into two main single locus variant groups. Investigation with BLASTn revealed the presence of the spaA gene in 171 (96%) of the isolates, with three main groups of SpaA protein sequences observed amongst the isolates. Novel SpaA protein sequences, categorised here as group 3 sequences, consisted of two sequence types forming separate clades to groups 1 and 2, with amino acid variants at positions 195 (D/A), 303 (G/E) and 323(P/L). In addition to the newly identified groups, five new variant positions were identified, 124 (S/N), 307 (Q/R), 323 (P/L), 379 (M/I), and 400 (V/I). Resistance screening identified genes related to lincomycin, streptomycin, erythromycin, and tetracycline resistance. Of the 29 isolates carrying these resistance genes, 82% belonged to SpaA group 2-N101S (n = 22) or 2-N101S-I257L (n = 2). In addition, 79% (n = 23) of these 29 isolates belonged to MLST group ST 5. Our results illustrate that Australia appears to have a unique diversity of E. rhusiopathiae isolates in pig production industries within the wider global context of isolates.

Hodges, S. Lesley. "Electronic meeting systems – what they are and how they could benefit Australian government organisations." Thesis, Canberra, ACT : The Australian National University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/7178.

Abstract:
Meetings are very important in any organisation and the Australian public service is no exception. Unfortunately, meetings are costly and time consuming, and often are ineffective and inefficient. Participants are regularly left with feelings of dissatisfaction after the meeting. Electronic meeting systems (EMS) were first developed in the United States in the 1980s to make meetings more effective and efficient. They are now more user-friendly, internet-connected and support multimedia. However, EMS have not been adopted to the extent that could be expected. This study draws from an extensive literature review supplemented by three case studies of Australian companies that provide EMS products and services (Global Learning Pty Ltd, Grouputer Pty Ltd and Zing Technologies Pty Ltd). The study provides answers to six questions: • What are electronic meeting systems (EMS)? • What is the evidence that using an EMS does improve meeting productivity (efficiency and effectiveness) and satisfaction? • Are there other benefits from using these systems? • How does the use of an EMS bring about these improvements in meetings and group collaboration? • What factors need to be managed in order for the organisation to obtain the most benefit from these systems? • Could EMS be used to improve meetings and business processes in Australian (including state/territory) government organisations? The study concluded that EMS could be used to great benefit to improve meetings and their outcomes for an enormous range of tasks that are carried out in all levels in the Australian public sector. EMS have successfully supported meeting sizes from two people to 700, and an even larger number of participants is possible.

Abstract:
This item is only available electronically.
The widespread shrub species Eremophila freelingii, of inland Australia, has successfully expressed elevated U contents in both leaf and twig samples at workings of known mineralisation in the Mt. Painter region, South Australia. Leaf material produced reasonable contrast in U concentrations and good success rate at expressing buried mineralisation with approximately 75 of all samples returning a U concentration greater than or equal to analytical detection limit (DL). A comparison of leaf with twig material from E. freelingii makes this study unique. Elements generally occur in higher concentration in twig tissues than leaves, although twigs have a greater tendency to host detrital (dust) inputs. The highest U concentration came from the high-grade historic Hodgkinson U-prospect (0.25% U3O8). Overall leaves contained 0.05 – 0.24 ppm U and twigs contained 0.08 – 0.41 ppm U (1.04-5.86 times higher). Twigs also hosted Re up to 266 times the DL when leaves produced values below the DL. Re elevations in leaf tissue is characteristic of the intrusive granites; Pinnacles and Needles. Beryllium is also unique to Hodgkinson and the Pinnacles and Needles sites. A few traditional U pathfinder elements have an association with U in plant tissues including; Y, Ce, La on a regional scale, and more exclusively at Four Mile West. Other elements; Li and Be displayed associations with U in twigs limited to the Hodgkinson prospect. Mineralisation in the Four Mile West sequence occurs in the Eyre Formation (Four Mile U-prospect) and in the Namba Formation (Beverley U deposit). E. freelingii displays elevations in U situated over these units at concentrations above the regional biogeochemical average. Other popular commodities, Au and Ag, were present in low concentrations and returned values ≥ DL in 25.3% and 57.8% of all samples respectively. The Four Mile West sequence hosts the highest Au concentrations, while the hematite breccias host the elevated Ag results. Elevated Zn concentrations are also characteristic of the hematite breccias. Copper showed high variation (3.12 – 32.02 ppm) in all samples but these results do not appear to be closely associated with geological setting. The wide range of element accumulation E. freelingii is able to display would stimulate further research with this species in biogeochemical exploration.

Abstract:
Konservat-Lagerstätten, or fossil deposits exhibiting exceptional preservation of non-biomineralised material, are particularly prevalent in the Cambrian, and offer us great insight into the evolution and ecology of early animals and communities. The Emu Bay Shale (EBS) from the north coast of Kangaroo Island, South Australia, houses an early Cambrian (Series 3 – c. 514 Ma) Lagerstätte that contains over 50 species, including sponges, brachiopods, molluscs, annelids, priapulids, lobopodians, arthropods, vetulicolians, and several problematic taxa, making it the most diverse Burgess Shale-type (BST) biota in the southern hemisphere. While considerable work in describing taxa from the EBS Lagerstätte has been completed, less has been undertaken that focuses on the relationships between this and other Cambrian BST biotas. This project aims to examine some of the links between the EBS Lagerstätte and similar deposits from around the world, including the Burgess Shale (Canada), Chengjiang (China) and Sirius Passet (Greenland) biotas, amongst others. To this end, the project has two major parts. The first section aims to examine the biogeographic relationships between major Cambrian BST biotas from a global perspective. A substantial database of generic occurrence was constructed from the published literature, and analysed using various multivariate techniques in order to examine the relationships between these exceptionally preserved assemblages. Results suggest that both geographic distance and differences in age have an effect on the composition of BST biotas, and that assemblage similarity appears to increase through the Cambrian. The EBS biota is most closely related to other Gondwanan sites in South China, most likely reflecting a regional relationship. The second section involves a more focused description and interpretation of a single element of the EBS biota, namely an examination of the moulting habits of two common trilobite species from the Emu Bay Shale, Estaingia bilobata Pocock, 1964 and Redlichia takooensis Lu, 1950, and how this compares with other BST assemblages. Specimens from the EBS were examined and arrangements of exoskeletal elements likely representing moult ensembles identified, from which moulting behaviour was then inferred and compared. Analysis reveals that the EBS preserves a record of trilobite moulting unparalleled within other exceptionally preserved assemblages, representing a range of trilobite moulting behaviours, likely due to minimal water movement and relatively rapid burial within the biota’s unique inshore depositional setting. The unusual depositional setting of the EBS Lagerstätte seems to have had a minimal effect on the types of organisms present with the assemblage compared to other BST biotas. In contrast, this setting seems to have facilitated the preservation of an exceptional moulting record not found at other sites, including BST deposits. This, coupled with the unique preservation of certain structures such as eyes, confirms that the EBS is of great importance in elucidating the evolution of early animals and communities.

This paper examines the impact, causation, and contagion effect of subprime crisis on the returns on the U.S., EMU, UK, Australian and Japanese bond indices. We employ VECM to test the level of impact, VAR to test the causation, and GJR-GARCH within a VAR framework to test the contagion effect of subprime crisis. Our empirical results show that the occurrence of subprime crisis markedly increased the returns on U.S. EMU, UK and Australian bond indices. In addition, the lead-lag relationship in sovereign bond index between countries that sustained heavier financial losses in the subprime crisis, such as the U.S., EMU and UK and countries that sustained less losses, such as Australia and Japan remained the same and the phenomenon of risk contagion existed. After the subprime crisis, the relationship between the U.S. bond index and the EMU and UK bond indices turned from lead-lag to synchronous and the phenomenon of risk contagion existed. This result indicates that the commandingly leading position of the U.S. bond market in the worldwide bond markets has wiggled. The simultaneous responses of the U.S., EMU and UK bond markets to the tremendous impact brought about by the subprime crisis have created significant domino effect on the financial markets in the rest of the world. A “everybody’s in the same boat” model seems to have taken shape for the central banks of the U.S., EMU and UK at the time of a major financial crisis that if they adopt consistent monetary policies, it will help them cope better with material market changes and build up a defense network against the contagion of systemic risk induced by a financial storm.

Results of a multi-pronged palaeoenvironmental investigation of Early Cambrian marine sediments, employing trace and REE abundances, TOC and stable isotopes (C, S) are reported from three formations in the Stansbury Basins; Heatherdale Shale, Emu Bay Shale and Talisker Formation. The multiproxy approach in conjunction with sedimentological information provides a powerful tool for interpreting palaeoenvironmental conditions. Prevalent palaeoredox conditions of the Heatherdale Shale and Talisker Formation were dysoxic, evolving progressively more reducing natures up section. The Emu Bay Shale conversely demonstrates consistently aerobic interpretations for the redox proxies. Comparison of trace element and REE distributions to similar sequences of the Yangtze platform, South China shows striking similarities, Analogous basinal environments and common provenance may have lead to the seawater trace element chemistry of the Palaeo Pacific & Asian oceans exhibiting a homogenous nature. The Emu Bay Shale biota is the richest Burgess Shale-type (BST) fauna in the southern hemisphere. The implied oxic water column during accumulation appears difficult to reconcile with the exceptional preservation exhibited. Micro-scale sealed vessel (MSSV) pyrolysis of isolated kerogen and δ¹³Corg values provided confirmation of its redox status and implicate cyanobacteria in the preservation mechanism. Molecular signatures diagnostic of Gloeocapsomorpha prisca were identified, the first indication that microbial mats were involved in the taphonomy of a BST deposit. The biostratigraphic definition of GSSP horizons though the use of cosmopolitan taxa biohorizons is problematical for sections such as lower Cambrian deposits where few candidate fossils exist. Instead, an integrated approach comprising chemostratigraphy and/or sequence stratigraphy with the known biostratigraphy greatly increases our ability to make high-resolution correlations., δ¹³Ccarb profiles from three South Australian basins; the Stansbury, the Arrowie and the Officer are correlated regionally with the existing data from the Flinders Ranges. Globally identified excursions such as the negative ROECE and AECE event and the positive CARE and MICE events, are recognised in the profiles. This chemostratigraphic interpretation appears to support the biostratigraphic assignment of the sections. Asphaltic bitumens are long known to strand along coastlines of southern Australia and as far afield as New Zealand and Macquarie Island. Widely regarded as artefacts of an unidentified submarine oil seepages, a common source is interpreted from remarkably uniform compositions. An important consideration when attempting to locate their point of origin is the degree of weathering exhibited, which will reflect the residence time in the marine environment and proximity of the seep to the stranding site. Biomarker signatures and n-alkane C-isotopic profiles from interior and weathered exterior sub-samples of asphaltum from four localities in South Australia and New Zealand were compared. No distinction could be made between strandings despite their widely separated localities. The degree of degradation and isotopic variance suggest an origin from low intensity seeps in the western Otway Basin as strandings on the Limestone Coast and Kangaroo Island appear less weathered than those from Eyre Peninsula and New Zealand.

Abstract:
Globally, implementation of electronic medical records (EMRs) has accelerated. Australia is starting on this necessary but arduous path. Anecdotes suggest many nurses enquire “You Want Me to Use This EMR? Opinions on the use and usefulness of EMRs are not positive. This research proffers the use of a rich theoretical lens, taken from the information system’s domain, to understand the root concerns and create solutions; providing insight into nursing acceptance and adoption of the EMR.

Abstract:
Warlpiri ritual leader from Lajamanu, Central Australia, Nakakut Barbara Gibson Nakamarra, recounts her dream revelation of two songs for totemic ancestors of the Rain and Emu Dreamings (Jukurrpa). She explains how the dream took her on a journey from her country in the Tanami desert, where she was living hunting and gathering until she was moved to a reserve. The dream takes her up dancing with ancestral women up North where one Emu songline disappears in the Ocean. The testimony ends with the magic reunion of the narrator and the book’s author at the birth of her second baby in Broome, Western Australia.

In Third International Conference on Higher Education Advances. Valencia: Universitat Politècnica València, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/head17.2017.5473.

Abstract:
Background: Extended matching questions (EMQs) were introduced as an objective assessment tool into third year immunology undergraduate units at Monash University, Australia. Aim: The performance of students examined objectively by multiple choice questions (MCQs) was compared to their performance assessed by EMQs; there was a high correlation coefficient between the two methods. EMQs were then introduced and the correlation of student performance between related units was measured as a function of percentage objective assessment. The correlation of student performance between units increased proportionally with objective assessment. Student performance in tasks assessed objectively and subjectively was then compared. The findings indicate marker bias contributes to the poor correlation between marks awarded objectively and subjectively. Conclusion: EMQs are a valid method to objectively assess students and their increased inclusion in the assessment process increases the consistency of student marks. The subjective assessment of science communication skills introduces marker bias, indicating a need to identify, validate and implement, more objective methods for their assessment.
