Abstract:
Michael additions and reactions with haloalkanes have demonstrated the synthetic usefulness of the C-2 and C-4 anions in ceph-3-em sulphides and sulphoxides for the formation of a range of novel compounds (A-H). Other compounds prepared from similiar reactions include (I-O). A reverse Michael addition was attempted on the C-4 mono-adducts (M) and (N) and di-adducts (L) and (O). Determination of the configuration of the di-adducts (F) and (I) was accomplished by de-esterification followed by decarboxylation and resulted in the novel ceph-3-em (P). Conversion of (J) and (K) into novel ceph-3-ems (Q) and (R) bearing C-2 exocyclic bond systems via a Pummerer rearrangement is described. Attempts at a Pummerer rearrangement of (D) and (E) failed. Numerous attempts at a Cope rearrangement on ceph-2-em sulphoxide (G) and sulphide (H) failed. De-esterification reactions of the new ceph-3-ems to their corresponding acids were unsuccessful.

Abstract:

A K-12 education should prepare students for their transition to postsecondary life, regardless of the nature of such a future. This study aims to explore the secondary and postsecondary experiences of alumni from East Menlow School (EMS), a co-educational, K-12, college-prep, independent day school on the east coast of the United States. By surveying and interviewing faculty and alumni, this mixed-methods study seeks to identify which student and teacher characteristics or practices, curricular and pedagogical practices, and school and family supports contribute to the high school completion and persistence through at least the first year of their postsecondary institution of EMS students in general and EMS students with learning differences (LD) in particular. A young adult’s persistence to college graduation is multi-dimensional. Learning differences add an extra layer of academic and non-academic difficulty. As a result, it is vital that educators understand the needs of their LD students.

While the perspectives of EMS alumni in general, both non-LD and LD, are analyzed, this study further seeks to compare and contrast the experiences of EMS alumni with dyslexia, also known as a reading disability or reading disorder, with their non-LD and other LD peers. For many students, the ability to read and to write is the foundation of college success. Since the juried literature is scant in independent schools, this study attempts to provide a foundation for other research on LD students in independent schools.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a study on efficient dispatching rules in ambulance dispatching. By efficient dispatching rules, we mean such dispatching rules that lower response times for priority 1 calls while keeping response times for priority 2 calls at an adequate level. A Markov process and a simulation model were developed in order to evaluate the performance of several existing and newly designed dispatching rules. On four different response areas, five different dispatching rules were tested and their performances were compared. Particular focus was put upon the dispatch rule currently used by the Swedish emergency service provider SOS Alarm; the Closest rule. Our findings indicate that the four priority-based dispatching rules all outperform the Closest rule in decreasing the mean response time for calls of priority degree 1. Furthermore, implementing restrictions on the travel time for priority 2 calls was proven an efficient way to control the trade-off between the mean response time of priority 1 and 2 calls. The conclusion was drawn that the possibilities for more efficient ambulance dispatching are many and that SOS Alarm should consider implementing priority-based dispatching rules, alike the ones presented in this thesis, in their dispatching process. A study of the ambulance operator and controller profession, and the operator’s and controller’s interplay with the decision support system used by SOS Alarm in the ambulance dispatching process, was conducted in parallel. The properties of the interaction dynamics between operator and automation and the dangers linked to it were mapped out, described and analyzed.
Denna kandidatexamensuppsats behandlar effektiva dirigeringsstrategier inom ambulansdirigering.

Fan, Jerry, and Zhouije Fang. "Elektroniskt matbeställningssystem (EMS) : Androidapplikation för matbeställning i restauranger." Thesis, KTH, Skolan för informations- och kommunikationsteknik (ICT), 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-147680.

Full text
Abstract:

Cox, Brian James. "EMS Mutagenesis in Quinoa: Developing a Genetic Resource." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2020. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/9080.

Full text
Abstract:
Chenopodium quinoa, a South American pseudocereal, has valuable agricultural traits such as salt tolerance and drought tolerance, and it has beneficial nutritional properties such as high protein content and a complete amino acid profile. However, problems including disease susceptibility, low harvest index, lodging, seed shattering, low heat tolerance, and saponin content plague quinoa. Genetic resources for quinoa are needed to fix these problems and make quinoa more available throughout the world. We used ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) to create a mutant population of QQ74 quinoa (USDA GRIN PI 614886) of 5,030 mutant families. We did whole exome sequencing (WES) on 44 mutant families. Using the recently published quinoa reference genome and MAPS, a mutation detection pipeline, we found a mutation rate of 11.35 mutations/Mb in these families. We also used whole genome sequencing (WGS) to calculate a mutation rate of 21.67 mutations/Mb in an additional nine mutant families. To demonstrate the utility of this population as a genetic resource, we found an EMS-induced nonsense mutation in the betalain synthesis pathway that prevents red betacyanins from accumulating in the hypocotyl of quinoa. With the mutation rates in our population, we calculate that analysis of 300 mutant families will yield 3-7 mutations in any gene of interest, which will facilitate forward and reverse genetic studies in quinoa.

Parrish, Ashley. "PEDIATRIC PAIN ASSESSMENT PRACTICES AND PREFERENCES OF EMS PROVIDERS." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/535399.

Full text
Abstract:
A Thesis submitted to The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Medicine.
Background: Pain scales developed for children were noted not to be useful or practical in an ambulance, and EMS providers have been found to use non‐standardized measures of pain severity in children. A recently published evidence‐based guideline recommends using pictorial scales (PS) for patients aged 4‐12 years, and observational‐behavioral scales (OBS) for younger patients. Objectives were to assess EMS providers’ baseline knowledge, self‐reported practices, self‐efficacy for treating pain in children, and preference for pediatric pain scales. Methods: A survey and education module were administered to a convenience sample of EMS providers from four agencies within a large metropolitan area. Providers answered 20 Likert scale items, received a 15‐minute didactic on pain assessment in children, and then answered four additional survey items. Results: There were 397 surveys returned (80% of providers receiving didactic). Six‐tenths of providers had practiced >10 years, 99% were EMT‐P, and 91% were male. 88% reported feeling “Very‐Extremely” comfortable measuring pain severity in adults; 38% reported the same in children. 57% reported having been trained on the use of pain scales in children; 46% were at least “Moderately” familiar with any PS and 24% with any OBS. While 44% assessed their current practice as “Sometimes‐Always” using pediatric scales, <25% of providers reported carrying paper or electronic copies of pain scales. 75% reported using their own observation to assess pain “Most of the Time‐Always.” Self‐efficacy results for utilizing pain protocols and measuring pain scores for 8‐year and 36‐month patients revealed 68% and 48% were at least “Mostly” certain they could perform correctly. After education about pediatric pain scales, 41% and 31% reported they would be more than “Somewhat” likely to use PS or OBS, respectively. Conclusion: A sample of EMS providers reported a high level of discomfort assessing pain in children, a moderate prevalence of training, and a low familiarity with existing pediatric pain scales. Most use general impression to assess pain instead of pain scales. After education, the minority of providers reported likelihood of incorporating these tools into their practice. This is an important barrier to adoption of the evidence‐based guideline for management of acute traumatic pain.

Abstract:
The thesis presents a study on important attributes which should be considered by the supplier in buying situations in the electronic manufacturing services (EMS) market. Hence, the importance level of attributes is investigated to see which attributes are more or less important when business-to-business (B2B) customers place an order. This can be interpreted as the relationship between the created value and the accompanying cost. For the success of this research work, both the qualitative and quantitative methods need to be applied. The importance of nine aspects is examined including: payment term, warranty, brand, product quality, delivery, packaging, certificates, supporting service and after-sales service. To identify which one is significant, a classification of the twenty-three attributes covering the nine aspects is conducted using Kano’s evaluation table. The findings through this research indicate that delivery, product quality and supporting service are the three most important aspects. A focus on these aspects is supposed to help the company to get value for the customers and also bring significant benefits for that company.

Abstract:
Most producing companies aim to reduce tied up capital, which is meant to increase inventory turnover. In this study, an EMS (Electronic manufacturing service) -company, a contract manufacturer, will be studied. The company does not own the products themselves, but is a service company that manufactures to customers. The business has a problem that existed for a long period of time, they have a low inventory turnover among their component inventory. The company therefore wants to increase its inventory turnover in order to reduce its tied-up capital. The aim is to develop knowledge about supplier and customer relationships that affect the stock turnover rate in component stocks. In order to make calculations, it is profitable for the company to order materials multiple times for increased inventory turnover or fewer times to keep down the order cost. Case study is based on qualitative data in the form of interviews and observations. A large part of this study is also based on quantitative data from the company's MRP (material requirements planning) system. The literature is based on articles that deals with key concepts such as EOQ (economic order quantity), customer and supplier relationships. The conclusion of this study suggests that the company should use EOQ to reduce overall order cost while reducing the tied-up capital.

Abstract:
The subject of this dissertation thesis is „Savings in material flows in connection with EMS in production companies“. The topic of this dissertation thesis is the saving in material flows in connection with EMS in production companies. Sound ecological management in industrial companies is important due to the fact it enhances environment protection and provides the companies concerned with competitive advantage. In many cases it provides for better organization of labor and decrease of wastage and allows for other preventive measures. The aim of this paper is to study the relation between the economical and environmental protection interests of companies operating in selected business sector, the paper examines whether environment protection activities practiced by the companies provide also economical benefit for them. The paper uses literature to analyze relations between EMS, logistics and areas in which savings can be found thus contributing to better results in the fields of environment protection and economy. The gained information together with conducted empirical research is the base used in order to determine the area in which savings could be found. Emphasis is laid on material flows which are studied in selected company active in the field of automotive industry. The analysis is based on the current organizational structure and logistic chain, the analyses focuses mainly on warehousing activities. In the studied company there is charted disconnection point which is located in the reception area in the warehouse. Narrow place was found in the dispatch area of the warehouse, the results of the analyses are the base to be used to express the amount of possible savings. Within the process evaluation, measurements and analysis of working time for each shift have been conducted, since the working load of the concerned shifts presents a risk factor from the perspective of ensuring the in time delivery of materials to the production. Proposal to improve the process is based on the synthesis of acquired facts, it allows for better utilization of working time of warehouse employees and provides extra space for manipulation with materials. When there is extra working load to be handled (extra order from customer) it also provides for the elimination of unnecessary or extra actions connected with operations. The application of the improvement proposal will abolish one of the reasons for non operation time in production, which leads to savings in energy consumption and decreases the amount of emissions. In the final part of the dissertation thesis a summary of solutions to the encountered problems is presented and the possible contribution of this thesis to theory and praxis is described.

"Development of an innovative non rule-based energy management strategy for a Hybrid Electric Vehicle, structured for predictive driving controls based on external information knowledge." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2016. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/11755/.

Full text
Abstract:
Recently, the interest of the automotive market for hybrid vehicles has increased due to the more restrictive pollutants emissions legislation and to the necessity of decreasing the fossil fuel consumption, since such solution allows a consistent improvement of the vehicle global efficiency. The term hybridization regards the energy flow in the powertrain of a vehicle: a standard vehicle has, usually, only one energy source and one energy tank; instead, a hybrid vehicle has at least two energy sources. In most cases, the prime mover is an internal combustion engine (ICE) while the auxiliary energy source can be mechanical, electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic. It is expected from the control unit of a hybrid vehicle the use of the ICE in high efficiency working zones and to shut it down when it is more convenient, while using the EMG at partial loads and as a fast torque response during transients. However, the battery state of charge may represent a limitation for such a strategy. That’s the reason why, in most cases, energy management strategies are based on the State Of Charge, or SOC, control. Several studies have been conducted on this topic and many different approaches have been illustrated. The purpose of this dissertation is to develop an online (usable on-board) control strategy in which the operating modes are defined using an instantaneous optimization method that minimizes the equivalent fuel consumption of a hybrid electric vehicle. The equivalent fuel consumption is calculated by taking into account the total energy used by the hybrid powertrain during the propulsion phases. The first section presents the hybrid vehicles characteristics. The second chapter describes the global model, with a particular focus on the energy management strategies usable for the supervisory control of such a powertrain. The third chapter shows the performance of the implemented controller on a NEDC cycle compared with the one obtained with the original control strategy.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF JOSHUA GUNTHER, for the Masters of Science degree in Plant, Soil and Agricultural Systems, presented on November 2nd, 2015, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: DEVELOPING CHEMICALLY MUTAGENIZED EMS FORREST SOYBEAN POPULATION FOR HIGH OIL PROFILE. MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Khalid Meksem SUPERVISOR: Dr. Naoufal Lakhssassi Soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) are the most important crop that provides a sustainable source of oil and protein worldwide. Five major fatty acids are known, Palmetic, Stearic, Oleic, Linoleic and Linolenic acid, and each is essential for both nutrition and biodiesel. Oil demand for biodiesel production is constantly on the rise both because of high crude oil prices and because of the search for a sustainable fuel source. In biodiesel production a high level of Oleic Acid is ideal. Commodity soybean oil usually contains around 20% oleic acid. The objective of this research is to increase the Oleic acid content to increase the quantity of biodiesel that can be produced from one bushel of soybeans. With the process of chemical mutagenesis using Ethyl Methanesulfonate (EMS), soybean populations can be produced with varying fatty acid levels. Once these populations are isolated and tested they can be bred into a new cultivar with higher percentages of Oleic acid and grown on a large scale for biodiesel production. From the ‘Forrest’ cultivar that was used in the chemical mutagenesis process, there was one mutant line (FM3 2014-2031) that produced 43.26% Oleic Acid. This was almost twice the concentration of the Forrest wild type that was used as a control which had an Oleic Acid concentration of 23.17%.

Compiler error messages should allow programmers to understand and solve quickly problems found during the compilation process. However, compilers usually issue short contextless messages with little information and with terms that are difficult to understand. This work introduces the plug-in Error Message System (EMS) that allows the presentation of easy-to-understand and more meaningful error messages. EMS is a plug-in to the Eclipse IDE. It is highly configurable through Domain Specific Languages (DSLs). The DSLs allow that regular users build their own error messages and share them. Beginner programmers can use a set of error messages adapted to them thus reducing the time of understanding and correction of compilation errors.

Goodchild, Emma. "The implications for industry of internationally recognised environmental management system (EMS) standards." Thesis, University of Salford, 1999. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/14755/.

Full text
Abstract:
The first industry standard for environmental management systems, BS 7750, was published in the UK in September 1994. Since then we have seen the EC Ecomanagement and Audit Scheme come into force in April 1995 and an international environmental management system standard, ISO 14001, published in September 1996. The EMS standards allow organisations to have their environmental management systems externally assessed and approved. The first companies became registered to BS 7750 in April 1995, with approximately 70 organisations gaining certification during its first year of operation. Since then uptake of the standards has been steady but slow with many companies delaying their decision until the implications of adopting such a recognised approach have been clarified. This research reviews the experiences of organisations adopting the standards during their early years of operation. Key lessons are learnt from a three year Teaching Company Scheme project designing and implementing an EMS for a large chemical manufacturer. The author also draws on evidence obtained through a survey of organisations gaining BS 7750 certification during its first year of operation and a number of detailed case-studies. The aim of the research is to identify and assess the implications for industry of the EMS standards. Their impacts on business performance in terms of operational efficiency, competitive advantage, legislative compliance, public image and staff morale are assessed and their variability between organisations explained. The resource commitments required to achieve certification are identified including management time, capital expenditure, consultancy fees and certification charges. Accounting mechanisms for comparing the costs and income associated with environmental activities are reviewed and their applicability to monitoring the performance of an EMS evaluated. The research concludes with the identification of decision making criteria to assist companies in determining their environmental strategy.

Aljalahema, Rashid Shaheen. "Answers to EMS Queries About Dynamic Deployment: Fractile Performance, Cost, and Management." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/603515.

Full text
Abstract:
Dynamic deployment is an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) ambulance management strategy where 911 call demand coverage is maximized continuously through time. Unlike static deployment where dispatched ambulances leave a coverage gap until they return to their home-base after service, dynamic deployment redeploys idle ambulances to different locations if that leads to an increase in demand coverage. The purpose of this dissertation was to study dynamic deployment as a viable, beneficial, and cost-effective methodology in managing EMS ambulances and crews. The literature, while rich in studies on static deployment, was lacking when it came to ambulance management strategies like dynamic deployment. Through a discrete-event simulation model, hypothetical EMS systems were simulated under dynamic and static deployment with different demand patterns, demand loads, and system sizes. Dynamic deployment was found to be as good, or often better, in emergency response metrics than static deployment. When EMS systems want to meet a certain response goal, dynamic deployment may enable them to achieve that performance with fewer vehicles than static deployment. While savings in number of vehicles translate to substantial savings in crew wages and vehicular purchasing costs, dynamic deployment may increase operating costs per vehicle because of the extra mileage involved in redeployments. Many EMS systems with average vehicular utilizations of 40% to 50% may find, however, that dynamic deployment may be both cost-effective and beneficial in improving response performance. Different redeployment strategies were studied to address the added travel costs of dynamic deployment and a min-sum assignment model was found to decrease redeployment travel the most without impacting response performance. Finally, a procedure and a mathematical model were developed to route vehicles intelligently such that demand coverage is maximized throughout the redeployment process.

Kling, Michael Patrick. "Needs Assessment for Mental Health Support Towards Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Personnel." Thesis, Regent University, 2021. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=27961789.

Full text
Abstract:
Understanding and assessing the needs of Emergency Medical Service (EMS) personnel and other first responders is crucial for providing these individuals with the resources needed within their community. The literature discusses how EMS personnel are at risk for psychological impairment due to routine exposure to traumatic events and occupational stressors within EMS organizations. Additionally, the research has supported the importance of positive coping abilities, organizational belongingness, and social support within the lives of EMS personnel to enable them to resiliently handle the occupational stress of their job. This study investigated the occupational needs of EMS providers to determine if they are receiving resources within their organization to cope with occupational stressors. Participants for this study comprised (n=153) paramedics and fire-fighters from the Tidewater EMS Council organization. A needs assessment was conducted to explore correlations between quality of life, resiliency, years of service, level of education, burnout, secondary traumatic stress, interpersonal support, positive and negative religious coping, and the occupational needs of EMS personnel. The results revealed that burnout (r=4.27**) and secondary traumatic stress (r.215*) were important factors for determining occupational turnover among EMS personnel. Furthermore, EMS providers reported occupational needs such as easier access to mental health, improved staff relations, adequate staffing, and improved shift hours are needed within their organization. Future research should explore differences in occupational needs with EMS providers among EMS organizations in metropolitan and rural communities. Abstract:
This project aims to optimize smart electromyostimulators for the muscular reeducation. The electrostimulator optimization aims to improve the electrostimulation sessions (EMS) by obtaining informations on the muscular electical stimulations and the control application in real time in order to control the muscular response. Various control methods of the muscular force are been developed and applied on an accurate model. In first, the techniques will be applied on the partial model without taking into account the muscular fatigue then in second in taking into account the presence of fatigue and its effects. Theses control methods act on the stimulation parameters in frequency and in amplitude in function of the muscular response

Abstract:

Computer and communication OEM companies worldwide adopt outsourcing strategy in 1990 - 2000. European & American large EMS providers grow very quickly accordingly. But Taiwan don’t have a position in this trend, even we think we are very good at manufacturing. We take this chance to review what we think about manufacturing in the past 10 years and take this lesson to see our next 10 years. We also take the largest Taiwan EMS provider, OSE’s FP Group as an example to see her strategy. As OSE’s FP Group go into niche market before year 2000, she even turn loss to earning from the bad year 2000 to year 2002
