Abstract:
Scientifically informed theories of ordinary moral thought and action are on the rise but trend toward pessimism. Many theorists argue that ordinary moral judgment involves little reasoning or not enough to yield justified belief, while others argue that we rarely act for the right reasons. This chapter describes such sources of empirical pessimism (sentimentalism, debunking, egoism, Humeanism, and situationism). It then outlines the remaining chapters that defend the alternative, optimistic rationalism, which allows for more virtue by according reason a central role in moral psychology. While the science doesn’t suggest that moral knowledge and virtuous motivation come easily, there is no reason to reject ordinary moral psychology as fundamentally flawed. This chapter also discusses some preliminaries, such as the reason/emotion dichotomy, non-cognitivism, and how to draw on empirical research.

Abstract:
Chapter 9 presents our empirical results. The chapter begins with a description of the competing theories’ predictions for how the countries under analysis (the United States, China, Germany, Japan, and Canada) should differ by their moral reactions. We then present results demonstrating that the negative self-sanctioning and other-sanctioning moral emotions are far more common in the United States and China—countries with high levels of inequality. Conversely, the self-transcendent, communal moral emotions, like compassion and praise, are more often experienced in Germany, Japan, and Canada—countries with much lower inequality. This is consistent with our theoretical predictions.

Abstract:
This chapter presents each of the book’s core empirical propositions about how much graduate students change, retain, develop, avoid, and make use of confidants and compares them with nationally representative data. Drawing on original surveys and recent findings from other national studies, it examines whether other populations make decisions about whom to talk to as the graduate students did. Among the most significant findings: the core discussion networks of people at all ages change most often as they experience transitions that alter those with whom they interact on a regular basis; people actually confide often in individuals they are not close to; people often avoid those they are close to; people are willing to forgo closeness for empathy; people will often confide in whomever is around. In general, while graduate students are unique, their decisions with respect to confiding in others are largely not.
