Abstract:
Purpose – This study empirically investigates the effects of Official Development Assistance (ODA) on the economic activities of private actors in recipient countries. As a proxy for the economic activities of private actors, we utilize the job creation activities of foreign subsidiaries in recipient countries. The foreign subsidiaries provide a foundation for economic development by creating paying jobs. That is, if ODA has been successfully transferred to foreign subsidiaries, then these foreign subsidiaries should help economic growth and help create a boom in the local market by providing jobs. These jobs eventually lead to the achievement of the primary aims of foreign aid, including poverty reduction. Thus, this study empirically examines the relationship between ODA and the number of jobs created by foreign subsidiaries in recipient countries. Design/methodology – This is the first study to examine the effects of the ODA on the job creation of foreign subsidiaries because it has been hard to obtain internal information related to the employment status of foreign subsidiaries. Fortunately, we have a unique panel dataset provided by the Export- Import Bank of Korea (KEXIM) for 2006 to 2013. In terms of the empirical specification, we use the generalized least squares (GLS) method. The panel GLS estimator allows us to have an efficient estimation that overcomes the limitations of the panel data. It employs assumptions about the heteroscedasticity between the panels and makes an autocorrelation of the error term within each panel. Findings – We find that ODA influences job creation in foreign subsidiaries. In particular, we found that ODA creates more jobs in sales than in managerial or production positions. This study also shows that the effect of the ODA on the foreign subsidiaries’ job creation activities depend on the purpose of the ODA. By examining ODA effects on the foreign subsidiaries’ economic activities (e.g., job creation), this study fills a gap in the current literature. Originality/value – Existing studies that focus on the ODA effect have either a macroeconomic point or a microeconomic point of view. However, both approaches do not explain how well foreign aid has influenced private economic actors of recipient countries. In essence, previous researchers found it difficult to obtain the necessary data for internal employment status from foreign subsidiaries. However, thanks to the Korea Export-Import Bank, this study shows that ODA indeed influences the job creation activities of foreign subsidiaries even after controlling for other factors such as FDI, GDP growth rate, employment rate, household expenditure, mother firms’ share, etc. By doing so, we can examine how ODA influences the job creation of foreign subsidiaries, which might help economic development and reduce the amount of poverty in recipient countries.

Abstract:
This article addresses some of the problems of an empirical study of literature resulting from the fact that it cannot, qua empirical science, engage in the evaluation of literary texts and the moral issues those texts exemplify as well as the further fact (if it is a fact) that statements about textual meanings in the context of literary interpretations are not empirically true or false. Traditional interpretive literary criticism has always played a significant part in the reproduction and modification of culture. From this point of view, an empirical science of literature must appear severely limited. However, it can be argued that such an empirical study of literature can show that interpretation is necessarily a constructive process and therefore always, to a large extent, determined by (often ideological) background assumptions. An empirical study of literature would make interpretation one of its objects of study and explanation. Such investigations would further our understanding of processes of text comprehension in general, but it would also allow us to reconstruct the background assumptions guiding traditional interpretations.

Abstract:
Introduction of the concept of sustainable development (SD) led to the transformation of values and interests of key stakeholders: the government, population and business. Since consideration of regional stakeholder interests is crucial for ensuring SD of large countries like Russia, a methodology is needed to assess their fulfilment, balance and consistency. However, previous studies of regional sustainable development have not yet proposed such a methodology. The present paper examined and classified regional stakeholder interests and developed an indicator framework to evaluate their fulfilment. We proposed an algorithm for calculating 9 group and 7 integral indices which were subsequently used to measure the socio-economic-environmental balance and inter-stakeholder consistency of interests. The methodology was applied to 17 regions of the Volga and Ural Federal Districts of Russia. The research discovered that sustainable development in most regions was at a medium level. There was no significant difference in the fulfilment of interests among the different stakeholders, which can be interpreted as a factor strengthening social cohesion. Additionally, a socio-economic-environmental imbalance was revealed: the fulfilment of social interests was the highest and that of environmental interests was the lowest. Regression modelling has shown that the presence of this imbalance has a negative impact on SD of Russian regions. The proposed methodology may contribute to broaden the scope of analytical research in the field of sustainable development.

Abstract:
Non-governmental organizations form a vital part of the social fabric in contemporary societies. They provide services and support to marginalized groups, enhance advocacy and awareness of social and environmental issues, and influence public policies. Given the lack of studies on non-governmental organizations operating in Jordan, it is crucial to understand their situations and shed the light on their methods to gain a competitive advantage. This study aims to analyze the mediation and sequential moderation linking the advantages of dynamic capabilities, differentiated strategies, social capital, common goals, and organization learning to produce competitive advantage from the perspective of strategy and organizational capacity. The study sample consisted of 100 employees working in non-governmental organizations in Jordan, who were selected in a simple random way.The findings reveal the factors that can influence business competitiveness by developing dynamic capabilities, differential strategic effects, and accumulating social capital. The study supports the organizational idea of learning to compete by emphasizing internal management practices (e.g., common goals, purposes, and social capital) and external attributes (e.g., differential strategies and dynamic capabilities). Finally, Jordanian companies should improve the links between their social capital, common goals, and dynamic capabilities to become competitive. AcknowledgmentThe study is funded by Alhussein Bin Talal University, fund decision (288/2022).

Interest rate, stock and option are all important parts of finance. This paper applies uncertain differential equation to the study of the evolution of interest rate and stock price separately. Based on actual observations, we estimate the parameters in uncertain differential equation with the method of moments. Using the introduced interest rate and stock models, we price European options and compare the results with actual observations. Finally, a paradox of the stochastic financial model is stated.

Hill, Lorna A., and A. A. Archer. "Communications strategies: An empirical study." South African Journal of Business Management 19, no. 4 (December 31, 1988): 133–40. http://dx.doi.org/10.4102/sajbm.v19i4.984.

Full text
Abstract:
This study, based on the theoretical discussion in the previous article in the series, empirically investigates the communication function in some South African business enterprises. Results indicate that the importance of this function is expected to increase considerably in South African companies in the future. Although an awareness exists of the vital importance of communication, businesses largely seem to neglect using it as a strategic or opinion-forming tool. The emphasis rather appears to be on the tactical use of communication. Furthermore, it is those communication activities directly related to the promotion of the sale of products or services which receive most attention rather than the non-commercial areas of business communication. Employees and customers have the greatest influence on the achievement of long- and short-term corporate goals. However, communication with these two stakeholder groups is the most seriously hampered by cultural, language and literacy obstacles. An analysis of stakeholders in terms of cultural factors forms the foundation for the cultivation of cultural sensitivity which is essential to a proper understanding of the nature of culture and its influence on business communication. Surprisingly, although an awareness exists of the magnitude of cultural differences as a communication obstacle, cultural factors do not receive as much attention as other aspects such as social values, goals and strategies and information required by stakeholders when the stakeholder environment is analysed.
