Gonzalez, Jose. "Expeditionary mobile operations center (EMOC)." Thesis, Monterey, California: Naval Postgraduate School, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/43919.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
This research explores a viable solution to the U.S.Marine Corps’ (USMC) communications gap at the tactical edge. The aim is to leverage commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technology to provide a combat operations center (COC) like communication architecture to small units operating in austere environments. The proposed architecture required must be lightweight, energy efficient, and allow greater mobility through a reduced footprint and energy consumption. By reducing the energy required for unit communications, this theoretical architecture decreases fuel needs, leading to a reduction in logistical-supply requirements. The emergency operational center (EOC) architectural concept is examined as an example of virtualized technology to determine how such an architecture might satisfy USMC requirements. Server virtualization, hastily formed networks, the functionality of software and hardware in a virtual environment, and the original concept of the EOC architecture are explored. Expeditionary considerations and Marine Air Ground Task Force command-and-control (C2) characteristics are also considered, along with current communication architectures, comparing capabilities, weight, and power consumption to determine a baseline for future C2 technology. Finally, the interoperability and security of the EOC are discussed in relation to software and hardware used by the USMC.

The MIT iLab Project has developed online laboratories (iLabs) which are lab stations that can be accessed and controlled remotely over the Internet. With iLabs, students can conduct real experiments on real equipment over the Internet. With the introduction of the National Instrument's Educational Laboratory Virtual Instrument Suite, NI ELVIS, in the development of iLabs, students to gain a better understanding of engineering concepts by obtaining real data from electronic labs. One of such crucial engineering concepts is telecommunications which plays a key role in transmitting information between people, systems and computers. There are many telecommunication schemes which exist today. The iLab developed in this thesis implements an experiment for studying one of such schemes, Amplitude Modulation. The NI ELVIS is used together with a device called the Emona Digital and Analog Telecommunications Experimenter (DATEx) to achieve the Amplitude Modulation lab setup. This iLab is an Interactive iLab, which gives one student at a time complete, real-time control over the lab set up. The Amplitude Modulation iLab will permit students to tune various controls and observe the behavior and changes of relevant signals, both in time domain and frequency domain. It will also permit students to compare different signals and retrieve data locally for post processing.

Bock, Emmanuel. "“If no Divells, no God” : devils, d(a)emons and humankind on the mediaeval and Early Modern English stage." Thesis, Durham University, 2010. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/750/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis looks at the relationship that humanity has with the devil, the demonic, and the daemonic as it is represented in plays from the mediaeval to the Early Modern period in England. While critics have contradictorily seen the devil as a secular figure on the one hand, and as a vestige of sacred drama on the other, I consider the character from an anthropocentric point of view: the devil helps reveal mankind’s emerging independence from religion and the problems that accompany this development. Chapter I sets the context for the investigation, tracing the broad outlines of the genesis of the figure that turned into the devil, before the main body of the thesis looks at the interaction between the devil and mankind. Part I considers the devil as master of his own deeds. Chapters II and III look at his development in the mediaeval Mysteries and Moralities, showing how an ever greater independence of the figure simultaneously leads to him being increasingly used as a character designed to educate mankind. Chapters IV and V reveal a similar pattern: the more confident the devil is of himself and the more he believes himself to be in control, the wilier man proves in freeing himself from his influence. Chapter VI sees the exodus of the devil as mankind takes control of its destiny. Part II looks at plays in which men attempt to control their fate by controlling the fiend and subjecting him to their power. Chronologically, it parallels the evolution traced in Chapters IV to VI. Chapters VII and VIII show that such efforts prove fruitless and counterproductive as long as the power men derive from their association with the devil is not channelled into a positive vision for the future. Only a model of a society that combines access to power and human responsibility, that substitutes a more selfless morality for an egocentric one, can keep the fiend at bay, as seen in Chapter IX. Finally, Chapter X tests these findings against The Birth of Merlin, which defies categorisation and dating.

Abstract:

Lassi, Zohra Sultan. "Health care seeking for maternal and newborn health." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/111939.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Complications during pregnancy and childbirth can lead to emergency situations which are critical to address promptly in order to avoid birth-related deaths of mothers and newborns. Aims: 1. To identify effective interventions for improving neonatal and child survival. 2. To identify strategies for improving maternal and newborn health care seeking in low- and middle-income countries. 3. To understand the maternal and neonatal health care seeking pathways in rural communities of Pakistan. 4. To assess the effectiveness of the Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (EmONC) package on health care seeking behaviour in rural communities of Pakistan. Methods: To evaluate the above aims, the following methodologies were employed: 1. An overview of systematic reviews on World Health Organization list of essential interventions. 2. A systematic review of quantitative and qualitative studies. 3. A qualitative assessment of the perceptions of health care seeking. 4. A cluster randomised controlled trial to evaluate the impact of the EmONC package. Results: 1. The overview identified six effective and 11 promising interventions for improving fetal, neonatal and child survival. The effective interventions include corticosteroids for at-risk pregnant women, breastfeeding, cord care, kangaroo care, treated bednets for children, and vitamin A for infants from six months. 2. The meta-analysis of 29 RCTs, with a range of different community-based interventions provided through community mobilization and home visitation, indicated significant improvement in health care seeking for neonatal illnesses (RR 1.47; 95% CI 1.24-1.75), whereas, no impact was seen on health care seeking for maternal illnesses (RR 1.06; 95% CI 0.92-1.22). The review of 151 observational and qualitative studies identified several social, cultural and health services related factors that contribute to delays in health care seeking. 3. Factors which lead to delays in health care seeking include lack of women’s autonomy to decide to seek care, lack of money, workload at home, and the attitude of staff at health facilities. 4. The EmONC package showed no impact on health care seeking for maternal and newborn illnesses. However, improvements were seen in uptake of beneficial aspects of maternal and newborn care including receiving antenatal care (RR 1.06; 95% CI 1.04-1.08), use of clean delivery kits (RR 1.49; 95% CI 1.45-1.54), skilled birth attendance (RR 1.07; 95% CI 1.04-1.10), and newborn care practices including application of chlorhexidine to the umbilical cord and emollient use. Conclusion: While comprehensive adoption of the effective and promising interventions can improve neonatal and child survival around the world; community-based intervention strategies such as home visitation and counselling can help improve the awareness and accessibility of those interventions. In Pakistan, strategies are not only required to prevent the delay in health care seeking, which include reinforcement of health supplies and improvement in practices of health care profession, but also to improve factors which can prevent women from using health facilities. Although the EmONC package did not show any improvement in health care seeking for maternal and newborn illnesses, improvements were observed in the uptake of antenatal care attendance, institutional births, skilled birth attendance, and other care practices.

Schoemaker-Marcotte, Camille. "La qualité des soins obstétricaux en milieu rural malien : une étude exploratoire." Thèse, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/9853.

Full text
Abstract:
To improve maternal health, it is essential to implement interventions that act on the intrapartum period, interventions that consist essentially in improving access to obstetric and neonatal emergency care (EmOC). Nevertheless, several countries that have turned to such interventions encounter significant challenges in their implementation and the high rates of maternal mortality persist. This study aims to identify characteristics of structure and process in community health centers (CSCOM) where maternal deaths have occurred and to compare these characteristics with those of CSCOM where no maternal deaths have occurred. We opted for an exploratory comparative approach of CSCOM with patients with different outcomes and different human resources configuration. The study population corresponds to CSCOMs of Kayes region in which obstetric emergencies were managed. The main focus of this study is on human resources, availability of equipment, supply and medicine, and on the level of knowledge of health care providers in these health centers. Our data analysis revealed that there are large disparities in resources available at the CSCOM level. Yet, these resources are needed in order to adequately manage obstetric emergencies. Although none of the CSCOM characteristic can be associated with adverse outcomes, the accumulation of deficits in human and material resources as well as the lack of knowledge of certain categories of staff suggests that the poor quality of obstetric care may threaten the parturient survival.

Peng, Chen. "The internationalization process of Chinese multinational enterprises: influencing factors and paths under the belt and road initiative." Doctoral thesis, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/25093.

Full text
Abstract:
An important change that economic globalization has brought to the world is the rise of Emerging Multinational Enterprises represented by China. Due to economic globalization, Chinese multinational enterprises (CMNEs) like China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) have played an increasingly important role and have become a major driving force for globalization. Considering the status of latecomers, CMNEs generally fall short of strong international "resources" or "capabilities" to establish their advantages in international competition, which is strongly promoted by the Chinese government through a series of policies in the "Belt and Road" initiative. However, the late start disadvantage, the "liability of latecomer" and the "liability of emergingness" have caused resistance to their internationalization. Through qualitative research and analysis of CRBC cases in three continents, this thesis reveals four paths of CMNEs' internationalization: progressive, radical, leaping, and tentative internationalization. It furthers identifies a three-step model they follow: "Stepping Out", "Planting In", and "Going Out". The centrality, structural autonomy, direct connections, trust, fine-grained information transfer, and joint problem-solving arrangements of CMNEs in the host country’s market network have been found to be the most important factors affecting their internationalization. To overcome their late start, the liability of latecomer, and the liability of emergingness in the context of the "Belt and Road" Initiative, CMNEs rely on policy stimulus, resource endowment and network location between China and the host country. They gain insights into the needs of target customers and integrate resources to provide cost-effective solutions that are highly compatible with customer needs and mitigate resource disadvantages.
