Rosso, A. C. "Essays on Polish emigration." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2014. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1425463/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis has a focus on Polish emigration in the 90s, providing further evidence of the effects of emigration on the labour markets in the sending countries and on the selection of emigrants both from the sending and destination country's perspective. The second chapter analyses emigration from Poland over a period of 10 years, showing empirically that emigration had a positive impact on the labour market by increasing average wages, but also by increasing wages of the skill groups that experienced the highest emigration outflow. The empirical evidence is supported by a simple economic model, according to which wages are determined by the country's production technology that distinguishes between different skill groups, and change as a consequence of the relative change of the supply of labour of a skill group. The third chapter studies the selection of Polish emigrants from the sending country towards two of the main destination countries: the United Kingdom and Germany. Selection of emigrants is explained through the difference in wage inequality in the destination versus the source country. The predictions of the theoretical model are supported in the data and emigrants to the UK are negatively selected with respect to non-emigrants in terms of unobservable characteristics. When considering education, emigrants are more positively selected (against the model's predictions). For Germany, the empirical results do not confirm the prediction of the model and selection is likely to be the product of the immigration policies in place at the time The fourth chapter provides empirical evidence on the performance of Polish emigrants in the labour market in the destination countries studied in the third chapter. Interestingly, after 2004, despite the high level of education, Polish immigrants performed very poorly in the British labour market, while the average conditions of Polish immigrants in Germany improved.

Abstract:
This dissertation utilizes recently developed techniques to explore with precision some basic questions that have long puzzled historians: who were the 19th-century European emigrants, and why did they emigrate? In the case of the extensive British emigration to the U.S.A. during the early 1850s, there is special interest in the possible influence of the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846. Also of interest is whether industrial change in Britain influenced the emigration. Contrary to the current opinion that the repeal of the Corn Laws did not result in the catastrophe predicted by many contemporaries, the fall in grain prices that resulted from repeal was the main cause for agriculturalists dominating the emigration of the early 1850s. Grain farmers on poor soils without the capital necessary for improvement comprised the bulk of the agricultural movement because they were losing their limited capital and saw no future in a free-trade Britain. Those farmers not experiencing such distress in Britain did not emigrate. Emigration seems to have been an option taken reluctantly by farmers. Surprisingly few persons experiencing industrial change in Britain at this time emigrated to the United States. The growth of Britain's textile and iron industries created openings that were filled by potential emigrants. More numerous aboard the emigrant ships were unskilled labourers and "pre-industrial" craftsmen, especially building trades workers and miners. The Welsh miners showed a particular interest in emigration because of a short depression and sour industrial relations that resulted from a fall in the demand and price for coal. Altogether, negative influences, or "distress", played the key role in the extensive emigration from Britain to the U.S.A. during the early 1850s.

Abstract:
The Swedish emigrants, in 1901-1904, were displeased with their home country, so they moved to America with hope to find a better life. Even though they were displeased they still had a great love for their home country and tried to either create a “new Sweden” (the Swedish-Americans), or they traveled back to their families, hopefully with savings big enough to buy their own home. Sweden did not have a homestead act like the Americans did, which probably is the biggest reason to the emigration. There was also the question of each individual’s right to vote. When you got American citizenship, you received the right to vote. The right to vote, as a reason to the emigration, was discussed in the Swedish newspaper. Some articles claimed that there were areas in Sweden with little political influence that had a lower emigration rate, in comparison to areas with a larger political influence. However, not only did you receive the right to vote, but you also get a home for free, thanks to the The Homestead, which later on became a national symbol for Sweden. A little red cottage with a stone wall around the land. The feeling for nationalism grew as this symbol alongside the Swedish national theme came along. There were of course other reasons, such as the strict laws of military service at the age of 20. As the laws got more serious, the emigration got higher.   My purpose behind this thesis was to find out what the oppinions was from two Swedish newspapers about the great emigration to America that took place between the years of 1901-1904. It was two newspapers from each political opposites, and a total of 35 articles was found and used. To make the material manageable, I had to set up a few keywords. That way I could select a few headlines, instead of reading them all. Then I presented the newspapers´ arguments in four kategories. The same four kategories are used to discuss the possibilities and problematics behind the arguments. The point behind this study is to show how the nationalistic arguments are presented in the newspapers.

Abstract:

There seems to be a gap in previous literature where economists and social scientists do not focus on factors driving emigration of health professionals between developed coun-tries. Although, there is a lot of literature that discusses emigration of health profession-als from developing towards developed countries, there are few previous studies of health professional emigration between developed to developed countries. This paper examines and analyzes factors which might be of importance in determining the direc-tion of emigration of health professionals between developed countries. The concept of health professionals in our study contains people with more than 3 years of education within the health and social welfare sector, not referring to any particular occupation such as nurses, doctors, dentist etc; or whether they are specialized in any area. This pa-per analyses factors that affect emigration of Swedish health professionals, using eco-nomic and social variables in a structured regression model. The results indicate that the percentage of Swedish health professionals is directly affected by factors of destination countries such as geographical proximity, GDP(PPP) per capita, income tax rate and co-workers encouraging development.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to determine how Galician Jewish emigration during the period 1869-1880 was affected by the Austrian Constitution of 21 December 1867, and in particular by Article IV of said constitution's Fundamental Law Concerning the General Rights of Citizens which granted freedom of movement for the first time to Habsburg subjects. Various demographic, economic, political and societal factors particular to migration, to Galicia and to Galician Jewry are examined in order to establish the effect of the 1867 Constitution on Galician Jewish emigration.

Pervik, Maria. "Emigration : När upphör den svenska skattskyldigheten?" Thesis, Örebro University, Department of Behavioural, Social and Legal Sciences, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:oru:diva-1311.

Full text
Abstract:

McIntosh, Malachi. ""Home" : emigration, identity and modern Caribbean literature." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2010. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/35526/.

Full text
Abstract:
Caribbean writing is an emigrant tradition. The first waves of native-born authors from the region all spent significant portions of their lives abroad and, almost without exception, built their fame upon the desires of metropolitan audiences for knowledge of their colonies. Accordingly, the famous names of Lamming, Naipaul, Selvon, Césaire and Glissant are all stamped with a slightly less famous departure date. While many critics have noted these facts, there has been little sustained analysis of how the unique social positions and preoccupations of emigrants have affected the works of these five writers or their peers. This thesis is an attempt to address this issue. Its argument is that Caribbean emigrant authors spoke from unique social and conceptual loci. Through detailed, comparative readings of these five authors’ first major works, alongside considerations of their self-assessments, critical opinion on their oeuvres, Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of the literary field and Antonio Gramsci’s theory of the organic intellectual, the argument advanced is that although these authors actively positioned themselves, and were positioned by their readers, in such a way that their emigrant status has had its importance elided, that status is present and potent in their post-emigration works. While the concerns of these writers all altered over the course of their careers, their early experiences of emigration shaped some of their most widely read texts and resulted in a harmony between them that transcends the authors’ differing islands of origin and their later thematic and political preoccupations.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to construct a questionnaire to determine what factors affect emigration. The questionnaire consisted out of 51 items and was administered to 150 respondents who were South African citizens either living in South Africa or who have emigrated to another country. Factor analyses were applied to the 51 items and four factors were identified; these were social and political situation, work experience, victim of crime and job satisfaction. It was found during the ANOVA and Scheffé analysis that having a tertiary qualification will affect emigration. This information can be applied to attempt to retain educated individuals within South Africa in efforts to eliminate the so-called “brain drain”. Copyright 2010, University of Pretoria. Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the representation of emigration to Canada in Scottish Romantic periodicals and fiction, and of the relationship between these genres and the little-studied genre of the emigrant's guide. Chapter One tracks the Edinburgh Review and Quarterly Review's reviews of books on Canadian topics and demonstrates how the rival quarterlies respond to, and intervene in, the evolving public debate about emigration. Chapter Two examines depictions of Canada in Blackwood's Magazine and Fraser's Magazine, and reveals connections between these magazines' engagement with Canadian affairs and the concurrent reception of Scottish Romanticism in early Canadian literary magazines. Chapter Three argues for an understanding of the emigrant's guide as a porous form that acts as a bridge between nonfictional and fictional representations of emigration. Chapter Four reads novels with emigration plots in relation to the pressures of American, Canadian and transatlantic canon formation, arguing that these novels trouble the stark division between the American and Canadian emigrant experiences which was insisted upon by contemporary commentators and which continues to underpin criticism of transatlantic literary works. Chapter Five considers the relationship between Scottish Romanticism and nineteenth-century Canadian literature, a relationship which has often been framed in terms of the portability of a 'Scottish model' of fiction associated most strongly with Walter Scott. Overall, this thesis contends that foregrounding the literature of emigration allows for greater understanding of the synchronicity of Scottish Romanticism and the escalation of transatlantic emigration, offering an alternative to conceptions of Canada's colonial and transatlantic belatedness.

Hales, Ashley Anderson. "Sympathy and transatlantic literature : place, genre, and emigration." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/9468.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis posits Enlightenment articulations of sympathy, in its capacity for establishing connections and its failures, as an appropriate methodology to articulate transatlantic literary exchange. Focusing on the sympathetic gap, the space sympathy must traverse, this thesis investigates the effect of emigration and place on genre and follows the trajectory from documentary to fictive forms and from a small gap to one unable to be bridged. Because the gap of sympathy is a spatial argument, the distance between is crucial as it indicates relationship. The introduction outlines my argument, with particular attention to transatlantic criticism, what is meant by the gap of sympathy, and the triad of place, emigration and genre. The first chapter discusses how Adam Smith articulated how one person is able to maintain a stable identity and is able to connect with another through imaginative comparison. The chapter establishes the trajectory of sympathy as the gap moves from smallest to unbridgeable, through comparison, sympathy and the failure of sympathy. In a series of case studies, Chapters Two through Five test out Smith’s theories in literary works; they examine the trajectory of transatlantic sympathy, where the gap moves from rhetorically being small to gaping, and moves generically from documentary forms to fiction. Chapter Two uses emigration guides written by British emigrants, who, because of their emigrant status, write from both an American and British perspective. The guides, because of their promotional intent, tend to underplay the gap of sympathy. Although they could be read as documentary and objective, the guides evidence ideological and rhetorical similarities to transatlantic fiction and thus serve as an entrance into the themes and stylistics one tends to associate with literary genres. Chapter Three examines the transatlantic correspondence of the Kerr family. As the Kerr family corresponds transatlantically (separated in space by the Atlantic and in time by more than 50 years), the issue of space becomes paramount to understanding the correspondence as well as if sympathy works in this generic register. Generically, the transatlantic letter is meant to provide virtual presence amid long stretches of absence; it also becomes an analogue for the absent other and the means by which the family may continue to be imagined across the gap of sympathy. Chapter Four examines Susanna Rowson’s transatlantic works, particularly Charlotte Temple, Slaves in Algiers, and Reuben and Rachel. Rowson’s own emigrant experience provides an entrée to the pain of transcultural sympathy that we see most clearly in Reuben and Rachel. Throughout her works Rowson also advocates a sympathy that is active and moral, rather than emotionally vacuous. Reuben and Rachel illustrates the gap of sympathy being bridged most effectively in cross-cultural adaptations and yet finally settles for a sympathy that must acknowledge separation and difference as well. Chapter Five explores the failures of sympathy and sociability present in Charles Brockden Brown’s gothic novels, Wieland and Edgar Huntly. Characters’ frontier locations and claustrophobic versions of sociability, as well generically, the gothic turn and failure of epistolary exchange, signals the moral ambiguity connected with becoming ‘this new man’ of America. Brown’s epistolary fiction briefly considered offers another generic attempt to examine how the gap of sympathy may be bridged and extend beyond the confines of the family. The Afterword points to the total breakdown of sympathy as a turn inward and away from sociability, where the self becomes frantic and frenetic (as evidenced by Crèvecoeur’s Letters from an American Farmer); it points to some useful applications to the gap of sympathy for transatlantic literary studies.

Sims-Alvarado, Falechiondro Karcheik. "The African-American Emigration Movement in Georgia during Reconstruction." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2011. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/history_diss/29.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a narrative history about nearly 800 newly freed black Georgians who sought freedom beyond the borders of the Unites States by emigrating to Liberia during the years of 1866 and 1868. This work fulfills three overarching goals. First, I demonstrate that during the wake of Reconstruction, newly freed persons’ interest in returning to Africa did not die with the Civil War. Second, I identify and analyze the motivations of blacks seeking autonomy in Africa. Third, I tell the stories and challenges of those black Georgians who chose emigration as the means to civil and political freedom in the face of white opposition. In understanding the motives of black Georgians who emigrated to Liberia, I analyze correspondence from black and white Georgians and the white leaders of the American Colonization Society and letters from Liberia settlers to black friends and families in the Unites States. These letters can be found within the American Colonization Society Papers correspondence files and some letters reprinted in the ACS’s monthly periodical, the African Repository. To date, no single work has been published on the historical significance of black Georgians who emigrated to Liberia during Reconstruction. What my research uncovers is that that 31 percent of the 3,184 passengers transported to West Africa by the American Colonization Society from 1865 to 1877 were Georgians, thereby making Georgia, the leading states to produce the highest numbers of blacks to resettle in Liberia and the logical focal point for the African-American emigration movement during Reconstruction.

Nichols, K. Madolyn. "The women who leave : Irish women writing on emigration." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2014. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/66161/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship between fin-de-siècle anti-emigration propaganda and fiction written by upper middle-class Irish women. Specifically, it examines the ways in which Catholic authors used the medium of fiction to propound an anti-emigration message analogous to that found in Catholic and nationalist press. Often at stake in their work is the degree to which the peasant female emigrant is to blame for the act of emigration, and the degree of agency she possesses in relation to the events or conditions that lead to this event. Class is a dominant determinant of agency in the depiction of the emigrants’ actions and decisions, as peasant and gentry emigrants are treated differently; the authors’ own class is also key in determining the stance they take on these decisions. In all of these treatments, the common themes throughout the study are the construction of Ireland as ‘Holy Ireland’, a haven of moral safety and spiritual regeneration, the ways in which the difference in authors’ political intent affects their treatment of the emigrant female, and the degree of realism with which the protagonist and her context are addressed. The authors under discussion, Mary Butler, Katharine Tynan, Rosa Mulholland, and Geraldine Cummins, though well-known in their time, have been almost completely forgotten, along with their literary and cultural contribution to Ireland’s history. Aside from contemporary criticism and reviews of their work, relatively little information exists about the authors under discussion. Consequently, this study seeks to initiate a conversation about the authors and the way their adaptation of Catholic nationalist discourse participated in emigration debates. This thesis is the first full-length study to examine the works of authors who adapted literary themes in order to create a discourse that actively discouraged young women from leaving Ireland during a period of female-dominated emigration.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The European Union is confronted to the lack of skilled workers due to the increasing of the average age of its population. During recent decades, while North America was attracting many skilled workers, Europe was also a destination for immigrants, but due to the lack of a consistent immigration policy, many of these were illegal immigrants and thus were not highly educated workers. Much research has been conducted about immigration in Europe and Portugal, but none has focused on the subject of re-emigration of non- Portuguese skilled workers out of Portugal. This study focuses on Iranian and Indian academics who have come to Portugal for a period of time, and attempts to identify the factors which impact on the decision of these academics to settle in Portugal or to re-emigrate to a third country. As these academics came to Portugal to do their PhD and post-doctoral research, they are considered skilled workers who can be a useful resource for the Portuguese market after finishing their studies. To carry out this research, a web-based questionnaire was used to investigate 46 Iranian and Indian academics and random interviews were conducted. The questionnaire covers a broad range of questions which can be useful for similar studies. From the results of this study the main factors contributing to the decision making of academics (to settle in Portugal or to re-emigrate to a third country) was revealed. These factors may help in the design of an evaluation system for accepting skilled immigrants in Portugal based on those who have more probability of integration.

Abstract:
I used enclosures with exits for emigration to test whether house mice could regulate their numbers by emigration to two levels of resources. Exits had a water obstacle likley to be crossed only by true emigrants. Enclosures had excess food and water and the number of shelters was held constant. I introduced a pair of mice into enclosures about every other night, until no more would become residents. I ran 7 trials in single enclosures and 8 in double enclosures (2 single enclosures joined with a tunnel). The number of mice that stayed within a given size enclosure was consistant, and was 2.3 times higher in double enclosures than in single enclosures. Weather, predation, starvation, and disease did not act in any trials. My data support the contention that house mice can control their population numbers through spacing and emigration.

Abstract:
This thesis considers the individual drivers of migration in modern Swedish emigration and the subsequent decision to remain in the host country. The study draws on primary data from 14 semi-structured digital interviews with Swedes who have emigrated and permanently settled down in different locations in the United States. Through the push- and pull framework, individual cases have been considered whilst also comparing the findings with previously identified drivers in migration research. The sociological findings of this study present the collectivist Swedish norm Jantelagen (‘The Law of Jante’) as a prospective push-factor in both the decision to emigrate and to permanently settle down in the U.S. Subsequently, certain discrepancy exists on the macro level of Swedish society as both radically individualistic with collectivistic norms expecting individual conformity. The result implies that emigration is an option to break free from normative restrictions for certain individuals. Relatedly, the perception of a negative political development, restricted freedom of opinion, and self-censoring political correctness are explicit push-factors for some Swedes to emigrate and/or reside permanently. Furthermore, higher levels of stimulation in education and work, easy access to the job and housing market in the U.S. could be linked to the migration driver subjective well-being/happiness. Network often influenced the emigration and led to perceived lifestyle improvement. Moreover, the initial push and pull factors proved to be inconstant as motives and circumstances in the migration process changed e.g. in case of separation from a partner.

Abstract:
The subject of the Master work is emigration of highly qualified specialists. Emigration of highly qualified specialists is known for a long period of time, just now the scales of emigration is higher than ever. Economic recession is playing a big part in this, as all the countries are affected by recession at the different level. Due to migration of highly qualified specialists government looses money, which was spend in gaining the qualification, as well country looses tax payers and overall country looses competitiveness in international arena. The object of the study is the influence of labor market policy to the emigration of highly qualified specialists. The main tasks are to highlight the nature and consequences of emigration; to reveal theoretical immigration–related factors; to evaluate Lithuania’s migration policy; focusing on labor market policy to distinguish to high–qualified specialists orientated emigration factors; to perform a quantitative survey and create a model summarizing the results. Work structure: work consists of three main parts: in the first part is made an analysis of theoretical high qualified specialists emigration aspects, in the second part is made a statistical analysis of Lithuania’s and other countries migration related data and in third – an empirical research made to evaluate the influence of labor market factors to the emigration decision. Working volume: 73 pages, 23 tables, 26 figures and 83 references used: 55 Lithuanian and 28... [to full text]

Abstract:
The purpose of the thesis is to investigate continuity and change in Dutch peoples´ identities as they immigrate to Sweden. Identity and change/negotiation theories will be applied to empirical material gained from interviews with four Dutch participants who have immigrated to Sweden. The result shows that identity is something that the immigrants view as relatively constant through their lives what concerns personality, character and nationality. They agree that changes in identity occur when factors such as age and new roles in life as for an example when one becomes a company owner or a parent. Dutch and Swedish people seem to be the same when it comes to appearance that one thinks that even social, economic and political systems are the same as the Swedish systems. Because of this the Dutch participants seem to separate themselves from the Swedes and at the same time they want to integrate with the Swedes. The integration process contains that in some contexts the Dutch immigrant identify him-/herself as a Dutch person and in other contexts they identify more as a Swedish person.

Abstract:
This is a study of survival and the 'Final Solution', taking its perspective from over One hundred-and-fifty eyewitness Jewish testimonies from the Wiener Library Archive. The importance of the victims' perspective is clear in that the majority of historiography uses a Nazi perspective in its analysis, leaving the Jews to tell of their experiences in separate autobiographies. In this way, the archive has largely been ignored by historians, yet provides some challenging insights into the three central aspects of the Holocaust of emigration, deportation, and forced labour. These aspects serve as the framework for analysis and focus on four key themes of survival. Firstly, the awareness of Jews as to the true nature of the Nazi regime. Secondly, how these Jews were treated by European non-Jews who have often been criticized in secondary literature for being anti-Semitic. Thirdly, how the various German regions were inconsistent in dealing with European Jews; sometimes indifferent to the low status of Jews in the Nazi hierarchy and other times imposing extensive and vicious procedures to further the policy of making Germany Judenfrei. Fourthly, the extent of pure luck in saving many Jews from the death centres. Ultimately, this study sets out both to analyse these four key themes individually and to discover how they influenced survival in combination. This will demonstrate the complexity of everyday existence in the Holocaust and how adapting to it often required more than just a single moment of adjustment to its severity.

Abstract:
This paper explores the discourses of emigration in a South African daily newspaper from 1988 to 2001, and discusses the implications of these discourses on the way in which emigration is constructed within South African society In this paper, Potter and Wetherell 's (1987) approach to discourse analysis is utilized. It makes use of interpretative repertoires, to explore the functions and consequences of the discourses. The discursive framework thereby reveals the different subject positions related to nationalism, race and class. It is argued that economics and notions of culture and social class, do more than provide a useful medium through which the phenomenon of emigration can be understood. They also support the affirmations of certain groups of people above others, by claiming that emigration is unpatriotic and disloyal. This paper concludes by identifying the negative connotations of media discourses in the construction of emigration and acknowledges that many alternate constructions are silenced in this matter.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates various micro and macro level domestic factors affecting attitudes towards immigrants and emigration of international students. The first chapter examines if an individual’s religiosity affects his attitude against immigrants in jobs in rich and poor countries using data from World Values Survey, wave 6 for the period 2010-2014. The main finding of this study is that per capita income affects an individual’s attitudes against immigrants in getting hired but religiosity does not matter in affecting attitudes of people against immigrants in rich and poor countries. The second chapter explores Europeans opposition against Muslims, Jewish and Roma immigrants based on perceived economic, religious and security threats in strong and weak economies using European Social Survey for the period 2014-2015. The results suggest that the state of economy dominates a respondent’s perception of economic, religious or security threats against banning Muslims, Jews and Roma immigrants. The third chapter sheds lights whether corruption in countries promote students to study abroad using data on outbound students from UNESCO for the period 1999-2015. The results indicate that corruption promotes emigration of international students for only high income countries in the sample but this result does not hold for low and middle income countries.

Radermacher, Ulrike. "Containerdeutsche : contemporary German immigration to Australia and Canada." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31156.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a comparative study of contemporary German migration to Australia and Canada, specifically to Sydney and Vancouver. It explores the dynamics of the migration process from a phenomenological point of view. All events and circumstances in the migration process are seen as interrelated, and therefore important to the analysis. Furthermore, the meaning of a phenomenon can only be understood by exploring its context. Therefore, this study views contemporary German migration in its various contexts—how it is displayed in the social science literature and manifested in government statistics, how it is presented as common sense, and how it is experienced by the migrants themselves. Thus, the phenomenological approach attempts to be holistic. Using the phenomenologic-hermeneutic paradigm the thesis focuses on the subjective experiences of individuals; in terms of migrants' understanding of their own motivations, migration decisions, and the process of adjustment, and in terms of their understanding of other contemporary German migration experience. The study examines the migration narratives of a sample of thirty Germans who have migrated, or are at some stage of the process of migrating, to either Australia or Canada over the last twenty-five years. The specific analysis and interpretation of these accounts are based on the hermeneutic philosophy of meaning and discourse. The sample interviews reveal two levels of conceptualization in the subjects' accounts. At one level all migrants talk in a way that can be characterized as representing "common knowledge". On another level, the interviewees interpret their own personal motivations and experiences in a way which does not correspond to common knowledge. Interviewees commonly described the Neueinwanderer (new immigrant) as wealthy, arrogant business migrants, but none of the interviewees described themselves in those terms. In Australia it was commonly thought that Neueinwanderer have a difficult adjustment time, but most personal narratives related positive adjustment experiences. In Canada all interviewees believed that German immigrants had no great adjustment difficulties. The major finding of this thesis is that the conventional notions of linearity and finality with respect to migration need to be re-evaluated in the social science literature, government policies and common sense. The phenomenologic discussion reveals that modern migration, at least for certain groups to certain countries, is not a linear, discrete and final process. Instead, this thesis argues that migration is best seen as a comprehensive, recursive process of decision making, action (legal application and geographic move) and adaptation to a new environment.
