Abstract:
This project examines the historical use of text on emblematic objects and through a studio-based practice investigates the signifying properties of object, text and material in the communication of symbolic message. It involves the manufacture of contemporary jewellery and tableware in traditional and non-traditional materials and references cultural and political themes. The symbolism of these themes has been explored through the visual and material applications of selected text, the collection and manipulation of found material (found with or without text), and how meaning can be symbolised through the transcendent manipulation of form. In my research I examined the established history of emblematic objects, which through their incorporation of text, their function and scale in relation to the body, organise, distinguish, categorise, unite or isolate groups of people. In my research I established that text has been employed by gold and silversmiths through out history and in a variety of ways - to narrate messages, as an abstract decoration, or as a means of identifying the maker but the graphic potential of text as a visible sign was rarely demonstrated. With this studio based project I was interested in investigating the signifying properties of text and the creation of a dynamic relationship between text, form and material as a means to communicate symbolic meaning. My research establishes the potential of the metaphoric and material language of jewellery and tableware to make reference to and communicate within contemporary cultural and political dialogues.

Abstract:
My thesis tilled Feminist Poetics: Symbolism in an Emblematic Journey Reflecting Self and Vision, consists of thirty oil paintings on canvas, several preparatory sketches and drawings in different media on paper, and is supported and elucidated by an exegesis. The paintings on unframed canvases reveal mise en scènes and emblems that present to the viewer a drama about links between identities, differences, relationships and vision. Images of my daughter, friends and myself fill single canvases, suites of paintings, diptyches and triptychs. The impetus behind my research derives from my recognition of the cultural means by which women's experience is excluded from a representational norm or ideal. I use time-honoured devices, such as, illusionist imagery, aspects of portraiture, complex fractured atmospheric space, paintings and drawings within paintings, mirrors and reflective surfaces, shadows and architectural devices. They structure my compositions in a way that envelops the viewer in my internal world of ideas. Some of these features function symbolically, as emblems. A small part of the imagery relies on verisimilitude, such as my hands and their shadow and my single observing eye enclosed by my glasses. What remains is a fantasy world, ‘seen’ by the image of my other eye, or ‘faction’, based on memories and texts explaining the significance of ancient Minoan symbols. In my paintings, I base the subjects of this fantasy on my memories of the Knossos Labyrinth and matristic symbols, such as the pillar, snake, blood, eye and horn. They suggest the presence of a ritual where initiates descended into the adyton (holy of holies) or sunken areas in the labyrinth. The paintings attempt a ‘rewriting’ of sacrality and gender by adopting the symbolism of death, transformation and resurrection in the adyton. The significance of my emblematic imagery is that it constructs a foundation narrative about vision and insight. I sought symbolic attributes shared by European oil painting and Minoan antiquity. Both traditions share symbolic attributes with male dying gods in Greek myths and Medusa plays a central part in this linkage. I argue that her attributes seem identical to both those of the dying gods and Minoan goddesses. In the Minoan context these symbols suggest metaphors for the female body and the mother and daughter blood line. When the symbols align with the beheaded Medusa in a patriarchal context, both her image and her attributes represent cautionary tales about female sexuality that have repercussions for aspects of vision. In Renaissance and Baroque oil painting Medusa's image served as a vehicle for an allegory that personified the triumph of reason over the senses. In the twentieth century, the vagina dentata suggests her image, a personified image of irrational emotion that some male Surrealists celebrated as a muse. She is implicated in the male gaze as a site of castration and her representation suggests a symbolic form pertaining to perspective. Medusa's image, its negative sexual and violent connotations, seemed like a keystone linking iconographic codes in European oil painting to Minoan antiquity. I fused aspects of matristic Minoan antiquity with elements of European oil paintings in the form of disguised attribute gestures, objects and architectural environments. I selected three paintings, Dürer's Setf-Portrait, 1500, Gentileschi's Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting, 1630 and Velazquez's Las Meniruis, 1656 as models because 1 detected echoes of Minoan symbolism in the attributes of their subjects and backgrounds. My revision of Medusa's image by connecting it to Minoan antiquity established a feminist means of representation in the largely male-dominated tradition of oil painting. These paintings also suggested painting techniques that were useful to me. Through my representations of my emblematic journey I questioned the narrow focus placed on phallic symbols when I explored how their meanings may have been formed within a matricentric culture. I retained the key symbols of the patriarchal foundation narratives about vision but removed images of violence and their link to desire and replaced it with a ritual form of symbolic death. I challenged the binary oppositional defined Self as opposed to Other by constructing a complex, fluid Self that interacts with others. A multi-directional gaze between subjects, viewers and artist replaces the male gaze. Different qualities of paint, coagulation and random flow form a blood symbolism. Many layers of paint retaining some aspects of the Gaze and Glance, fuse and separate intermittently to construct and define form. The sense of motion and fluidity constructs a form of multi-faceted selves. The supporting document, the exegesis is in two parts. In the first part, I discuss the Minoan sources of my iconography and the symbolic gender specific meanings suggested by particular symbols and their changed meanings in European oil painting, I explain how I integrate Minoan symbols into European oil paintings as a form of disguised symbolism. In the second part I explain how my alternative use of symbolism and paint alludes to a feminist poetic.

Abstract:
In this dissertation I explore how globalization and ethnic regionalism collide in the planning of the contemporary European city. Political-economic restructuring is making Europe simultaneously more integrated and regionalized. An emerging literature approaches such restructuring as a matter of geographic 'scale,' refraining globalization as 'rescaling' or 'reterritorialization,' often contested through a 'politics of scale.' These innovative approaches, however, need to be elaborated through case study. More, they fail to account for how globalization is not merely resisted, but is negotiated locally, particularly in the politics and landscapes of European cities where ethnic regionalism is resurgent. I ask: How may local politician and planners balance the external imperatives of globalization with the internal politics of regionalism, particularly in the cultural landscapes upon which a rescaled Europe must necessarily be constructed? I approach this question through case study of the city of Valencia, capital of the autonomous region the Comunitat Valenciana, emblematic of the European regionalization at which Spain is at the vanguard. Analyzing secondary literature, archival research of planning documents and newspapers, semi-structured interviews, and participant observation, I show politics in Spain to have long been defined by the politics of scale, revolving around issues of regional, cultural difference. Planning in capital cities like Valencia is thus central to efforts to consolidate regional territory, but the rescaling of urban space usually implies the transformation of traditional, cultural landscapes, like the irrigated croplands of the Horta that surround the city of Valencia. The politics of scale are both more contested and 'cultural' than the existing literature suggests, and they unfold in and through the cultural landscape. Globalization must necessarily be negotiated through what I call the cultural politics of scale, which are struggles to define the meaning of economic restructuring in political discourse and the material landscape. In Valencia, political leaders attempt to strike a balance between entrepreneurialism and regionalism in an ideology of entrepreneurial regionalism, which is manifest in both political discourses and new landscapes of economic development meant to materialize them. In the process, the cultural politics of scale remake local places and the global political economy simultaneously.

Abstract:
In his essay on The Pathetic Fallacy, Anthony Hecht notes that there was “an anagogic, emblematic view of nature in the Middle Ages until the 17th century, typically religious, wishing to see God in every aspect of creation, found in biblical texts and theological arguments, as well as in poems by Donne and Herbert”. This same perspective is found in a number of Hecht’s poems, among which several collections of emblem poems stand out. The supposed presence of an ideal value within concrete objects is the same principle which informs the creation of in-between figures in religious cults, such as saints and, most importantly, Christ, the word made flesh. Religious icons in fact become the key subjects of Hecht’s most emblematic poems, as they provide a synthesis between the opposed forces of soul and body, the realms of the spiritual and the worldly. In a similar way, the emblematic mode triggers a meta-reflection on artistic media, which, in the special case of abstract religious entities, allow for the representation of the immaterial in ways perceivable to the limited human senses, with particular emphasis on the possibility of visualization. While the Metaphysical Poets employ everyday metaphors to explain divine nature, or even represent saintly figures in very human terms, in order to stress the proximity of man to God, Hecht recalls the same concrete images, or describes concrete works of art – ex-votos, statues, paintings and books of prayers – to emphasize, through a reversed mechanism, the unbridgeable gap between these two worlds. The use of such worldly icons in fact is seen, satirically, as proof of man’s inevitably earth-bound state: they betray a preponderant preoccupation with the body, with its primary demands and issues – illnesses, violence, poverty – whose idealization is simply unconvincing. This duality is highlighted through the combination of a rich, pictorial and baroque style, representing the vivid details of reality, and of a more concise and direct plain style, inspired by the Bible.

Les ciliopathies rétiniennes sont un groupe de maladies rares causés par des mutations de gènes ciliaires. Les défauts des gènes ciliaires peuvent causer des défauts de trafic de protéines et induit l'apoptose des cellules photoréceptrices causés par le stress du réticulum endoplasmique (RE). On a étudié ciliopathies rétiniennes par modèle mourin, amaurose congénitale de Leber, rétinopathie pigmentaire liée à l’X, syndrome de Bardet-Biedl, syndrome d’Alström. Les souris Bbs1-/- , Bbs10-/- et CEP290-/- ont monté une diminution de la fonction rétinienne et sont causée par ER stress. Les souris Rd9/y et Alms1foz/foz présentent une apparition tardive et avec un faible taux de dégénérescence rétinienne et ils pourrait être causée par d'autres mécanismes. Le traitement GV-Ret basé sur le stress du RE pourrait sauver à la fois la fonction de et la morphologie de la rétine dans souris BBS
Retinal ciliopathies are a group of rare diseases caused by mutations of ciliary genes. Defects in ciliary genes can cause defects in proteins traffics and induces apoptosis of photoreceptor cells caused by stress of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) .We studied retinal ciliopathies by mice models, Leber congenital amaurosis, Xlinked retinitis pigmentosa, Bardet-Biedl syndrome and Alström Syndrome. The Bbs1-/-, Bbs10-/- and CEP290-/- mice exhibited a decrease in retinal function caused by ER stress. Rd9/y and Alms1foz/foz mice showed a late onset and a low rate of retinal degeneration and they could be caused by other mechanisms. The GV-Ret treatment based on ER stress could save both the function and morphology of the retina in BBS mice

A presente Tese propõe uma nova abordagem da leitura de textos do período conhecido por Barroco e, para isso, fez-se necessário criar novos termos que correspondessem a essa expectativa: a iconofotologia e poemas fotográficos. Para que um leitor contemporâneo possa ler e compreender textos daquele período, teria de ter acesso a uma chave sígnica a que somente os leitores do Barroco tinham acesso: as iconologias. No entanto, esse referencial se perdeu, por isso temos de substituí-lo por um outro, a partir do acervo imagético-fotográfico de que dispomos hoje e que chamamos de iconofotológico. A partir dele, será possível lermos, sob o ponto de vista contemporâneo (não sob o ponto de vista seiscentista), os poemas que denominamos fotográficos.
The present Thesis intends to give a new approach to the reading of texts from the period known as Baroque and, for that, it was necessary to create new terms that corresponded to this expectation: the iconophotology and photographic poems. In order to enable a reader to read and understand texts of that period, he would have to have access to a signical key to which only readers of that moment had access: the iconologies. However, such reference has been lost; therefore, we have to replace it by another one, from the imagetic-photographic collection we have, which is called iconophotological. With this premise, it will be possible to read, under the contemporary point of view (not under the baroque point of view), the so- called photographic poems.

The present dissertation aims to study the term "Emblematic subjects" as a theoric contribution to the Theory of the Identity in construction, sustained in the syntagma identity-metamorphosis-emancipation proposed by Ciampa (1987). According to a survey carried out during the process of this work, the term "Emblematic subjects" have been used and built since 1996 in discussions at NEPIM (Center of Study and Research of Identity-Metamorphosis) of Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP). To carry out this study, we began, so, with academic productions of NEPIM that have had completed the term "Emblematic subjects" and, as a methodology, we used the history of life contained in the eight academic works that served as a base for short account that are presented here as contextualization and illustration of what is discussed now. This work designed in the syntagma identity-metamorphosis-emancipation proposed by Ciampa (1987) and the arising from productions of NEPIM, and has as a theoric reference Jürgen Habermas and Ciampa, especially the post-conventional subject of Habermas (1983) and the "come to be" and "be to itself" of Ciampa (1987). As we treat it like a theoric work, this dissertation ends with the final considerations broaching synthetically, what has been discussed throughout the work such as exposing inherent gaps to the academic production as possible spaces of appropriation of the Academy
A presente dissertação visa estudar o termo sujeitos emblemáticos como contribuição teórica à Teoria de Identidade em construção sustentada no sintagma identidade-metamorfose-emancipação proposto por Ciampa (1987). Segundo pesquisa realizada durante a construção desse trabalho, o termo sujeitos emblemáticos tem sido usado e construído desde 1996 em discussões no NEPIM (Núcleo de Estudos e Pesquisa em Identidade-Metamorfose) da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP). Para efetivar esse estudo, parte-se então das produções acadêmicas do NEPIM que tenham contemplado o termo sujeitos emblemáticos e, como metodologia, utilizou-se as histórias de vida contidas nos oito trabalhos acadêmicos que serviram de base para breves relatos que são aqui apresentados como contextualização e ilustração do que ora é discutido. Esse trabalho pauta-se no sintagma identidade-metamorfose-emancipação proposto por Ciampa (1987) e nas produções oriundas do NEPIM, tendo como referenciais teóricos Jürgen Habermas e Ciampa, especialmente o sujeito pós-convencional de Habermas (1983) e o vir-a-ser e o ser-para-si de Ciampa (1987). Por tratar-se de um trabalho teórico, essa dissertação se encerra com as considerações finais abordando sinteticamente o que fora discutido ao longo do trabalho, bem como expondo lacunas inerentes à produção acadêmica como espaços possíveis de apropriação da Academia

The purpose of this dissertation is the analysis of some aspects presented in Conrad Gesner´s Historia animalium (1551-1558), such as some information included in animal´s descriptions, its sources and images, as a vehicle of knowledge transmission. We intend to demonstrate that the content in Gesner´s work, as well as in his contemporary fellows, showed particular features which were consisted not only of anatomical and physiological animal´s descriptions, but they were especially comprised of information which today would be considered additional, as for example, what the ancients would say about each animal, the legends, the fables, its use in medicine, in culinary, in art, etc. All this correlated information was called, by some scholars of this period, the emblematic world view and they determined the scope of animal History in the sixteenth century. In order to demonstrate the interrelated information in Gesner´s writings, we selected not only his writings but also some works of other writers. One of them is Andrea Alciati´s Emblematum Libellus (1531), to which is attributed the dissemination of the emblems - a group of text and image designed to be deciphered, bringing intricate topics such as religion, love, betrayal, politics, moral, among others, which were widely covered in Gesner´s work. We also selected some examples of medieval bestiary to demonstrate how animals were described and illustrated in this kind of work, as well as Ovid´s (43 a.C 17 d.C) Ars Amatoria and the Methamorphoses, aiming at investigating this type of literature and, in later editions, the kind of images involving animals in these poems, in order to accomplish the case study about the mythical beast known as the Minotaur
O objetivo dessa Dissertação é analisar alguns aspectos na obra História animalium (1551-1558) de Conrad Gesner (1516-1565), entre eles, o tipo de informação contida na descrição dos animais, algumas de suas fontes e as imagens como via de transmissão de conhecimentos. Nossa intenção é demonstrar que o conteúdo da obra elaborada por Gesner, assim como por alguns de seus contemporâneos, apresentava características particulares e era composta não apenas por descrições acerca da anatomia e fisiologia das bestas, mas eram especialmente carregadas de informações adicionais, como por exemplo, o que os antigos diziam sobre cada animal, lendas, fábulas, uso na medicina, na culinária, na arte, etc. Todas essas informações interligadas faziam parte de uma rede de conhecimentos chamada por alguns estudiosos desse período de visão emblemática de mundo e de natureza, que caracterizou a História dos animais no século XVI. Para demonstrar algumas informações inter-relacionadas na obra de Gesner, selecionamos, além de seus escritos, trabalhos de outros autores. Um deles foi o Emblematum Libellus (1531) de Andrea Alciati (1492-1550), ao qual é atribuída a difusão dos emblemas - um conjunto de texto e imagem criados para serem decifrados, que traziam intrinsicamente mensagens de diversos temas como religião, amor, traição, política, moral entre outros, e que foram amplamente difundidos nas descrições de Gesner. Selecionamos também alguns exemplos de bestiários medievais para demonstrar como os animais eram descritos e representados nesse tipo de trabalho, bem como A arte de amar e as Metamorfoses de Públio Ovídio (43 a.C 17d.C) para averiguar o tipo de literatura, e em edições posteriores, de imagens que envolviam animais contidos nesses poemas, peculiarmente para realizar o estudo de caso sobre a besta mítica conhecida como minotauro. Contudo, foi possível expor ao longo do nosso trabalho o tipo de informação trazida nos textos e nas imagens das diferentes obras selecionadas

Abstract:
The plots of Billy Budd and The Bonfire of the Vanities are organized entirely around a lawsuit. In The Pickwick Papers the trial is only a part, though an important one, of a series of related adventures in which the main characters of the novel participate. In the three novels there is a trial in which the accused is found guilty, although he is actually innocent. In The Posthumous Papers of the Club Pickwick, the author’s main purpose is to present the operation of the legal system, in which the modus operandi of unscrupulous lawyers, who rely only on cheating and deceiving methods, is atthe beginning of and determines the outcome of the lawsuit. In Billy Budd, an innocent is sentenced to death in order to preserve a supposed higher interest: the common good. In The Bonfire of the Vanities, political factors, personal interests, resentments and other worldly elements determine the outcome of the trial. In the three cases, the watchmaking mechanism that a lawsuit appears to be is completely overcome by factors outside it.
Las tramas de Billy Budd y La hoguera de las vanidades están organizadas íntegramente alrededor de un juicio. En Los papeles póstumos del Club Pickwick, el proceso es una parte importante de la obra, pero también existen aventuras relacionadas en las que participan los diversos personajes. En los tres juicios se juzga a un inocente. S’effaçant parfois devant les splendeurs de la cour par lesquelles les ducs de Bourgogne de la Maison Valois exaltèrent leur puissance et leur richesse aux yeux de leurs contemporains, la guerre n’en fut pas moins un instrument de communication politique et symbolique tout aussi important pour ces princes : outil de conquête, essentielle dans le processus de conscientisation étatique, la guerre fut également une vitrine du pouvoir, qui leur permit de construire et d’affirmer un aspect fondamental de celui-ci, leur statut de chef de guerre. Cette instrumentalisation particulière de la guerre prit deux formes majeures, l’image que les ducs de Bourgogne affichaient sur le champ de bataille et les représentations qui en découlèrent. De ce fait, il apparut rapidement qu’un prince imaginaire se mit à côtoyer le prince réel. Le présent travail entend étudier ces deux aspects du prince en chef de guerre et déterminer dans quelle mesure ceux-ci se complétaient et/ou s'opposaient. Cette réflexion sera tout d’abord fondée sur les sources manuscrites, à commencer par la comptabilité des ducs, afin de dessiner les contours du prince réel, c’est-à-dire la manière dont il apparaissait et agissait sur le champ de bataille. Les sources iconographiques permettront quant à elles de définir le prince imaginaire : ce sera l’occasion de faire le point sur les représentations des ducs de Bourgogne en réunissant un corpus qui se veut aussi complet et varié que possible. A travers cette étude sur leur image et leurs représentations, nous pourrons questionner le rapport des ducs à la guerre, leur conception de la fonction de chef militaire, mais également l’usage qu’ils ont pu faire de l’outil guerrier dans le cadre de leur propagande : pour cela, nous réfléchirons notamment à leur implication dans le processus de création et de diffusion des différentes représentations
Often forgotten comparing with the splendours of the court by which the dukes of Burgundy of the House of Valois exalted their power and wealth, war was nonetheless an instrument of political and symbolic communication just as important to these princes: a tool of conquest, essential in the development of the State, war was also a showcase of power, which allowed them to build and enforce a fundamental aspect of it, their status as war chiefs. This manipulation of war took two major forms, the image, that is how the dukes of Burgundy appeared on the battlefield, and the representations created after the event. As a result, it became clear that an imaginary prince existed alongside the real prince. In the present work, we will study these two aspects of the prince as war chief and think about how they coexisted. Firstly, this reflection will be based on written sources, starting with financial records, to identify the real prince, that is how the dukes appeared and acted on the battlefield. Iconographic sources will allow us to characterize the imaginary prince: it will be an opportunity for us to update our knowledge about the representations of the dukes of Burgundy by building a corpus which attempts to be as complete and diversified as possible. Through this work focusing on image and representations, we will be able to study the dukes’ relationship with war, their view on the role of war chief, but also the use of war in their propaganda: to this end, we will look at their involvement in the process of creation and dissemination of the various representations. Eventually, this work will enable us to develop a better understanding of what a war chief was by the end of the Middle Ages, through the example of the dukes of Burgundy

Cette thèse porte sur l’horticulture, sur les relations aux plantes et sur les représentations du vivant et de la vie au Japon. Elle rend compte d’une ethnographie conduite auprès de deux groupes de cultivateurs du bassin urbain d’Ōsaka (2013-2017) : des bénévoles dans une association cultivant une espèce de glycine (Wisteria floribunda) dans l’arrondissement de Fukushima à Ōsaka, et des producteurs professionnels cultivant des Prunus (pruniers, pêchers, cerisiers) dans le secteur de Higashino à Itami. Afin de « faire fleurir » (sakaseru) ces plantes emblématiques de leurs quartiers respectifs, ces cultivateurs pratiquent une horticulture traditionnelle caractérisée par un intense façonnage de chaque plante et par une savante mise en scène des floraisons. Cependant, l’irruption de phénomènes contrariants tels que la non-floraison ou la maladie (en l’occurrence, une maladie à virus des Prunus) remet en question un contrôle des plantes par la technique que l’on tenait pour acquis. Les cultivateurs sont amenés à modifier leurs pratiques, ainsi que leurs manières d’apprécier les plantes. Ces actions, ces mesures et les inférences qui s’y expriment sont autant d’occasions de s’interroger sur le fonctionnement et le statut des plantes. L’objectif de cette thèse est double. D’une part, produire une ethnographie de l’horticulture japonaise, notamment par la description des modes de sociabilité et des actions techniques observés sur le terrain. This Phd thesis is about horticulture, relations to plants, human relations around plants, and conceptions of life and living things in Japan. It presents an ethnographic fieldwork conducted among two groups of cultivators in the Ōsaka metropolitan area (2013-2017): volunteers cultivating a wisteria (Wisteria floribunda) in the Fukushima district of Ōsaka, and professional producers growing plum, peach and cherry in the Higashino neighborhood in Itami. In order to monitor these emblematic plants to “bloom” (sakaseru), the cultivators practice traditional horticultural characterized by a fastidious shaping of each plant, and they skillfully display the flowers. However, upsetting events such as lack of bloom or the outbreak of a plant disease (specifically a plum virus) put into question a technical control of plants that was taken for granted. Cultivators are led to modify their practices, and also the way they of appreciate the plants. These actions and assessments lead to inferences, allowing to question the status of plants, and how they work. There are two main purposes in this research. On the one hand, an ethnography of Japanese horticulture, focusing on a description of local social life and the technical actions observed during fieldwork. On the other hand, drawing on an "anthropology of life" engaged with the concrete manipulations of living beings that are both organisms and artefacts, the aim is to grasp the conceptions of life and living things, may that be a flower festival or part of a phytosanitary plan

La tesi intende rispondere all’esigenza di riconsiderare e di riprendere gli studi sull’ostracismo ateniese, attraverso l’analisi esaustiva e sistematica delle numerose testimonianze antiche, sia letterarie, complete o frammentarie, sia epigrafiche, nello specifico le notazioni graffite sugli ostraka rinvenuti nel secolo scorso ad Atene nella zona dell’Agorà e del quartiere Ceramico. La prima parte della tesi consiste nella trattazione delle principali problematiche relative alla pratica ateniese di ostracismo, riprendendo in considerazione la paternità clistenica dell'istituzione e riesaminando le principali fonti letterarie relative al funzionamento della procedura, soffermandosi sulle problematiche relative all'alfabetizzazione della popolazione ateniese di V secolo a.C.: le considerazioni riportate vengono avvalorate dal catalogo posto in fondo all'opera, in cui vengono esaminati i tracciati scrittori dei principali ostraka risalenti alla metà del secolo. La figura di riferimento all'interno del mercato cinematografico Cinese è senza dubbio quella del China Film Group Corporation, tentacolare gigante industriale che ha saputo imporsi in ognuno dei settori in cui opera in meno di 15 anni dalla sua creazione voluta espressamente dal consiglio di stato nel 1999. Questo elaborato vuole ripercorrere la breve ma importante storia del grande gruppo industriale di Pechino; degli ammodernamenti delle strutture dei settori della produzione, della distribuzione e della proiezione cinematografica analizzandone separatamente storia e dati più recenti. The thesis, with an exploratory intent, validates integral ecology as a principle that concerns every context of life and critically considers the dimensions of sustainability within the lives of individuals and organisations, analysing the issues in an interdisciplinary way and through novel inclusive epistemological perspectives. The notion of integral human formation and the perspectives of the Social Doctrine of the Church are taken as an itinerary to explore the possible heuristic connections between pedagogy and civil economy, with reference to the educability of the individual and human ecology. The orientation towards integral ecology urges pedagogical reflection, in dialogue with other sciences, to generate unprecedented civil planning and new educational options to achieve authentic fair and solidarity-based development. In the context of the business pedagogy, organisational models such as social enterprises, community cooperatives and Benefit Societies are considered as protagonists in the responsible commitment to building the community, enhancing the flourishing of the human person and the care of creation. Human education and integral ecology become an alliance capable of developing emblematic green capabilities for building an inclusive and vital future, in a perspective of common good.

The thesis, with an exploratory intent, validates integral ecology as a principle that concerns every context of life and critically considers the dimensions of sustainability within the lives of individuals and organisations, analysing the issues in an interdisciplinary way and through novel inclusive epistemological perspectives. The notion of integral human formation and the perspectives of the Social Doctrine of the Church are taken as an itinerary to explore the possible heuristic connections between pedagogy and civil economy, with reference to the educability of the individual and human ecology. The orientation towards integral ecology urges pedagogical reflection, in dialogue with other sciences, to generate unprecedented civil planning and new educational options to achieve authentic fair and solidarity-based development. In the context of the business pedagogy, organisational models such as social enterprises, community cooperatives and Benefit Societies are considered as protagonists in the responsible commitment to building the community, enhancing the flourishing of the human person and the care of creation. Human education and integral ecology become an alliance capable of developing emblematic green capabilities for building an inclusive and vital future, in a perspective of common good.

Abstract:
La presente tesi di laurea si propone di approfondire il samizdat: il fenomeno di auto pubblicazione clandestina di opere dattiloscritte, che si sviluppò nel periodo che va dalla fine del disgelo chruščëviano al periodo della perestrojka. Molti sono gli studi che gli sono stati dedicati e in questa tesi di laurea si intende approfondire tale fenomeno, fornendo una panoramica sulla grande varietà di materiale che circolava clandestinamente. Nel primo capitolo si descrive il contesto storico e culturale all’interno del quale il fenomeno del samizdat va ad inserirsi, dedicando una parte significativa al periodo della stagnazione, in quanto proprio in quel ventennio il fenomeno culturale dell’autoedizione vide il suo apice. Questo periodo fu pieno di contraddizioni poiché, se da un lato pratiche ormai consolidate e appartenenti a periodi precedenti continuavano ad essere utilizzate da parte del CC, dall’altro emergeva una nuova possibilità espressiva, indipendente da quella ufficiale, nata nel “sottosuolo” e che si diffondeva nelle file dell’intelligencija. Nel secondo capitolo proveremo a spiegare come funzionava il complesso organo censorio, le istituzioni alle quali si legava, ossia il Glavlit (Direzione generale per gli affari letterari ed editoriali), la polizia segreta e le Unioni artistiche. La censura era stata sempre presente nella realtà russa, non solo sovietica, ma anche zarista, in quanto alla parola si attribuiva molta importanza, poiché essa era portatrice di idee e valori, ancora di più nel periodo sovietico dove la tipologia di governo monopartitica rendeva necessario uno stretto controllo di tutte le forme espressive. In seguito al periodo del disgelo la censura si inasprì molto, ma paradossalmente questa situazione permise lo sviluppo del fenomeno del samizdat (fenomeno dell’autoeditoria clandestina), e dei suoi fenomeni paralleli il tamizdat (la pubblicazione all’estero senza sottoporre i materiali al vaglio della censura), e il magnitizdat (le registrazioni magnetofoniche di canzoni di bardi, che trattavano spesso temi scomodi come le repressioni e i campi di lavoro). Il terzo capitolo è dedicato proprio a questi argomenti: come si diffondeva l’opera samizdat, chi la copiava, chi la leggeva e come sfuggiva al controllo della censura e ai continui attacchi del KGB. Il samizdat sviluppò intorno a sé un sistema ben organizzato, vennero fondate riviste, almanacchi, periodici, bollettini informativi; ciò si rese necessario per dare una regolamentazione al processo di riproduzione clandestina dei testi. La rivista era il mezzo privilegiato all’interno della quale un testo autoprodotto entrava in rapporto con la cultura stessa generando una pluralità di interventi. Bisognerà attendere la perestrojka per vedere il samizdat, il tamizdat e il magnitizdat legalizzati, si trattò del tentativo di coinvolgere l’intelligencija all’interno dei capovolgimenti che il paese stava attraversando, ma l’intervento di Gorbačëv fu tardivo e non fu visto di buon occhio dalla maggior parte degli intellettuali, i quali attendevano un cambiamento, ma non ne avevano ancora una chiara consapevolezza. Il quarto capitolo è dedicato al caso dell’almanacco letterario Metropol’ che si verificò nel 1979, anno nel quale la morsa della censura sembrava essersi alleggerita, nonostante ciò l’azione dei redattori dell’almanacco fu vista come un atto di sfida nei confronti degli organi di governo, nonché una minaccia e per questo motivo l’attacco della censura, condotto dall’Unione degli scrittori, fu piuttosto forte. Il caso dell’almanacco viene preso in esame per approfondire le funzioni censorie esercitate dall’Unione degli scrittori.

La Corte costituzionale, sin dall’inizio della sua attività, ha ricoperto un ruolo molto significativo nei confronti del diritto penale. Principi fondamentali, quali quelli di legalità e di colpevolezza, attraverso l’apporto della giurisprudenza costituzionale, hanno acquisito nuovi contenuti, e lo stesso sistema sanzionatorio è stato sotto più profili coinvolto nell’opera di riconduzione della legislazione penale ai principi sanciti dalla Costituzione. La prospettiva che si intende adottare per l’analisi delle più importanti pronunce costituzionali è quella delle tecniche decisorie di cui il Giudice delle leggi si è servito, in oltre cinquant’anni, per svolgere il proprio controllo di legittimità sulle norme penali indiziate di porsi in contrasto con il sistema dei principi e delle regole contenute nella nostra Carta fondamentale. Anche nella materia penale, lo strumentario a disposizione dei giudici delle leggi si presenta quanto mai eterogeneo ed articolato, e le controverse formule espressive per contrassegnare le diverse decisioni della Consulta ne sono una prova. Le molteplici tipologie di pronunce elaborate dalla giurisprudenza costituzionale sono da anni oggetto di un’attenta analisi da parte della dottrina soprattutto costituzionalistica, da sempre alla ricerca di una (almeno percentualmente elevata) regolarità nelle scelte del tipo di pronuncia adottato dalla Consulta, sul presupposto che la individuazione di tipologie attraverso il consueto metodo della astrazione generalizzante possa assumere una vincolatività dogmatica. Ai nostri fini la ricerca ha lo scopo di individuare le tecniche maggiormente impiegate dalla Consulta, quando oggetto del suo sindacato sono le norme penali e in particolare quelle relative alla giustizia penale minorile e militare, settori particolarmente emblematici del ruolo di adeguamento ai principi costituzionali svolto dalla Corte costituzionale. La nostra attenzione riguarderà dunque quelle sentenze che, entrando nel merito della questione di costituzionalità di una norma, non si sono limitate a dichiararla infondata o ad accoglierla, ma si sono spinte sino al punto di dare della norma una interpretazione diversa da quella fatta propria dal giudice a quo, o sono intervenute direttamente sulla disposizione manipolandone, sempre in via interpretativa, il contenuto. Di qui i problemi circa l’ammissibilità di queste “invasioni” da parte della Corte costituzionale; “invasioni” che nella materia penale destano maggiori dubbi rispetto agli altri settori dell’ordinamento. Sarà altrettanto interessante approfondire quelle pronunce di natura processuale, di (manifesta) inammissibilità o infondatezza, che, pur non entrando nel merito dell’eccezione di legittimità costituzionale, aprono o, meglio, tentano di aprire, a seconda dei casi, un dialogo con i giudici comuni o con il legislatore. Proprio i rapporti del Giudice delle leggi con il potere giudiziario e con il potere legislativo saranno oggetto di alcune, seppur brevi, considerazioni. Da un lato, infatti, non si possono trascurare gli effetti delle pronunce costituzionali sull’operato della magistratura ordinaria, soprattutto laddove la Corte costituzionale li induce a dare, da soli, interpretazioni conformi a Costituzione. Dall’altro, non può negarsi importanza a tutti quei moniti, troppo spesso trascurati (o ignorati?), rivolti direttamente al legislatore perché metta mano a riforme più o meno sistematiche del diritto penale. L’analisi preliminare dei diversi strumenti adottati dalla Consulta, con il conseguente richiamo delle più rilevanti pronunce intervenute sul nostro codice penale, consente poi di approfondire il ruolo della giurisprudenza costituzionale nei due ambiti del diritto penale al centro della presente indagine: quello della giustizia minorile e quello della giustizia militare. La scelta di indagare il ruolo delle sentenze della Corte costituzionale in questi due settori nasce anzitutto dal notevole interesse che la Corte ha ad essi riservato. Nei riguardi del sistema penale minorile, come si vedrà, la Consulta è spesso intervenuta per supplire all’inerzia del legislatore ordinario che, nonostante i continui solleciti, non si è mai occupato di predisporre per il minore autore di reato una normativa organica e profondamente differenziata rispetto a quella prevista per l’adulto. Sul diritto penale militare, invece, l’opera della Corte si è rivelata pressoché l’esatto contrario: è infatti intervenuta su un ordinamento autonomo per denunciarne l’obsolescenza e per ricondurlo ai principi propri del diritto penale – per così dire – “comune”. In entrambi i settori, la maggior parte delle sentenze manipolative che vanno ad incidere direttamente sul testo legislativo, e che per questo segnano indelebilmente il sistema normativo, concernono la previsione delle sanzioni penali e la loro esecuzione. Come si avrà modo di precisare, i parametri alla luce dei quali il Giudice delle leggi interviene su queste materie, talvolta sino al punto di sostituire la cornice edittale stabilita dal legislatore, sono soprattutto il principio di eguaglianza di cui all’art. 3 Cost. ed il principio di rieducazione della pena di cui all’art. 27, comma 3, Cost.

Abstract:
Le développement du séquençage de l’ADN à haut débit a grandement facilité le criblage de variations génétiques dans le génome des patients. Désormais, l’un des principaux défis de la génétique médicale n’est donc plus la détection des variations, mais leur interprétation fonctionnelle et clinique. Récemment, nous avons montré, à l’aide de tests fonctionnels basés sur l’utilisation de minigènes, que bien que le nombre de mutations d’épissage, et en particulier celles qui affectent sa régulation, est actuellement sous-estimé, l’effet de ces variations pourrait être dorénavant prédit à l’aide d’outils bioinformatiques spécifiques. Nous avons ainsi étendu l’évaluation du caractère prédictif de ces quatre nouvelles approches bioinformatiques par une étude comparative des scores générés par ces approches avec des données expérimentales obtenues pour un total d’environ 1200 variations exoniques. Nos travaux ont ainsi démontré la fiabilité de ces approches, utilisées seules ou en combinaison, et ont permis de proposer des recommandations quant à leur utilisation en tant qu’outils de filtration pour prioriser les variations à analyser dans des tests fonctionnels axés sur l’épissage. Néanmoins, une analyse mutationnelle exhaustive ciblée sur l’exon 7 de MLH1, a mis en évidence l’échec apparent de ces approches, pourtant validées par des études menées sur l’exon 7 de BRCA2, l’exon 10 de MAPT et l’exon 5 de MSH2, laissant suggérer que ces méthodes pourraient ne pas s’appliquer de manière équivalente à tous les exons et/ou à tous les gènes. En effet, nous avons montré que cet exon était doté de caractéristiques particulières, i.e. de sites d’épissage remarquablement forts, lui conférant une résistance totale aux mutations de régulation d’épissage et mettant en échec les outils de prédictions. Ces données contribuent à mieux déterminer les limitations de ces outils bioinformatiques tout en contribuant à leur amélioration. En dépit de ces avancées, l'évaluation de la pathogénicité des mutations d'épissage reste complexe, en particulier celles conduisant à des anomalies d'épissage en phase et/ou partielles. En utilisant, comme modèle d’étude, des variations à l’origine du saut partiel de l’exon 3 de BRCA2, nos résultats ont révélé que l’activité tumeur-suppressive de BRCA2 tolère une réduction substantielle du niveau d’expression, étant donné qu’un allèle produisant jusqu’à 70% de transcrit codant une protéine déficiente n’est pas nécessairement associé à un risque élevé de développer un cancer. L’ensemble de ces données a d’importantes implications dans le diagnostic moléculaire et la prise en charge des patients et de leurs apparentés, avec un bénéfice direct pour les familles évocatrices d’une prédisposition héréditaire et devrait contribuer à l’interprétation de VSI identifiées par séquençage à haut débit dans toute autre pathologie d’origine génétique
The development of high-throughput DNA sequencing has greatly facilitated the screening of genetic variations within patient genome. Henceforth, one of the main challenges in medical genetics is no longer the detection of variations, but their functional and clinical interpretation. Recently, we showed by using splicing reporter minigene assays, that although splicing mutations, and in particular those affecting its regulation, are more prevalent than initially estimated, they could now be predicted by using dedicated bioinformatics tools. We thus extended the evaluation of the predictive power of these four newly developed computational approaches by a comparative study of the scores obtained by these approaches with experimental data for a total of about 1200 exonic variations. Our findings have demonstrated the reliability of these approaches, used alone or in combination, and allow to offer recommendations for their use as a filtration tool to prioritize the variations to be analysed as a priority in splicing-dedicated functional assays. Nevertheless, an exhaustive mutational analysis targeting MLH1 exon 7, has highlighted the apparent failure of these approaches, yet validated by studies focused on BRCA2 exon 7, MAPT exon 10 and MSH2 exon 5, suggesting that these methods might not be equivalently applicable to all exons and/or genes. Indeed, we have shown that this exon has particular characteristics, i.e. remarkably strong splice sites, conferring it a total resistance to splicing regulation mutations and defeating prediction tools. These findings help to better determine the limitations of these bioinformatics tools while contributing to their improvement. In spite of these advances, the pathogenicity assessment of splicing mutations remains complicated, especially of those leading to in-frame and/or partial splicing anomalies. By using variant-induced partial BRCA2 exon 3 skipping as a model system, we showed that BRCA2 tumor suppressor function tolerates a substantial reduction in expression level, as BRCA2 allele producing as much as 70% of transcript encoding deficient protein may not necessarily confer high-risk of developing cancer. Altogether, these data have important implications in the molecular diagnosis and clinical management of patients and their relatives, with a direct benefit for hereditary cancer-suspected families and should contribute to the interpretation of VSI identified by high throughput sequencing in any other genetic disease

La thèse est consacrée à l’expression emblématique chez Jean Baudoin (1584-1650). D’abord Lecteur de Marguerite de Valois, Marie de Médicis l’envoya en Angleterre afin de traduire l’Arcadie de la Comtesse de Pembroke en 1624. Il fit partie de la maison du cardinal de Richelieu et fut un protégé du chancelier Séguier. Dès 1634, il rejoignit les premiers membres de l’Académie française et participa à la rédaction de ses statuts. À cet auteur et traducteur très abondant, on attribue quatre-vingt six ouvrages, dont la plupart sont des traductions significatives pour l’orientation qu’il donne à son oeuvre : les Discours politiques sur l’oeuvre de Tacite de Scipio Ammirato (1618), La Sagesse Mysterieuse des Anciens de Francis Bacon, la Mythologie de Natale Conti (1627) ou encore les Monita et Exempla politica de Juste Lipse (1606 et 1650). La tradition iconographique est essentielle chez Jean Baudoin, ainsi que l’explication symbolique. Le Recueil d’Emblemes divers, publié pour la première fois à Paris en 1638-1639 est l’objet principal de la recherche ici entreprise. Ce recueil d’emblèmes est une oeuvre de l’invention de Jean Baudoin qui a toutefois été fortement influencé, dans sa rédaction, par ses traductions antérieures. Deux autres ouvrages traduits par Baudoin sont indispensables à l’étude approfondie du Recueil d’Emblemes divers : l’adaptation de l’Iconologia de Cesare Ripa (première partie, 1636-1637 ; première et seconde parties, 1644) et la traduction des Fables d’Esope Phrygien (1631). Ce travail se propose d’aborder dans un premier temps la façon dont Baudoin n’a eu de cesse de mettre sa personne et son oeuvre au service du renforcement et de l’affirmation de la monarchie française et de l’édification morale du lecteur. Dans un second temps, nous nous proposons d’étudier les connexions entre ces trois ouvrages majeurs qui permettent de comprendre la portée de l’expression emblématique chez Jean Baudoin, à travers trois axes majeurs. This dissertation is about the emblematical expression in the work of Jean Baudoin. At first Marguerite de Valois’s lecturer, he was sent to England by Marie de Médicis in order to translate L’Arcadie de la Comtesse de Pembroke, in 1624. Baudoin belonged to the House of the Cardinal de Richelieu and was one of chancelier Séguier’s protégés. As soon as 1634, hejoined the first members of the Académie française and took part in the writing of its statutes. Eighty six pieces of work are attributed to this prolific author and translator, most of which are translations significant of the orientation he gave to his work: the “Discours politiques” on Tacite’s work by Scipio Ammirato (1618), La Sagesse Mystérieuse des Anciens by Francis Bacon (1619), Mythologie by Natale Conti (1627) or Monita et Exempla politica by Justus Lipsus (1606 & 1650). The iconographical tradition is paramount in Jean Baudoin’s work, as well as the emblematical expression. The Recueil d’Emblemes divers, first published in Paris in 1638-1639 is the focus of the present dissertation. This collection of emblems was designed by Jean Baudoin, but he was largely influenced in its writing by previous translations. Two other pieces of work translated by Baudoin are essential to the thorough study of the Recueil d’Emblemes divers: the adaptation of Cesare Ripa’s Iconologia (First part 1636-1637, First and second part 1644) and the translation of Esope Phrygien’s Fables in 1631. The present work will first focus on how Baudoin constantly put himself and his work at the service of the reinforcement and affirmation of the French monarchy and of the moral edification of the reader. Then, we will study the connections between these three major works which enable to understand the importance of emblematical expression in Jean Baudoin. To do so, three main aspects will be studied: the renewal of the emblematical form/ genre, the creation of an allegorical vocabulary whose aim was the codification of the representation of power and monarchy, and a study of engraving, of it functioning in the text and of its production processes

Abstract:
The construction of megaprojects – large, landscape transforming infrastructure projects – is booming. Megaprojects are becoming more immense and more environmentally damaging. Requiring vast, often transnational investment, megaprojects have escaped the boundaries of the nation state, and are often enacted in transnational contexts. Research has shown that megaprojects almost always rely on a combination of overstated benefits and underestimated environmental impacts in order to be approved, attract investment, and be built. Megaprojects therefore typically rely on highly targeted strategic communications and attempts to steer public discourse, in order to emphasize their advantages and downplay risks. This leads to accusations that they are insufficiently transparent, even deceptive. However, in a hyper-connected world, megaprojects and their risks are now more visible than ever, and are increasingly contested in local, national and global public arenas. Megaprojects are constructed in discourse both by project developers and their supporters, and by protest groups, as well as through their representation in the media. During the protracted communicational sparring that often accompanies them, megaprojects can become conferred with symbolic meaning. This case study reveals the mediatized construction of a Chilean energy megaproject over eleven years from the project’s inception, to its final dissolution. The proposed HidroAysén hydroelectric scheme for Patagonia was at first a largely invisible project, unknown outside the potentially affected region, until protest made the project visible. Presented by the developing company and by authorities as a nation building project to bring Chile energy independence, over time it garnered such vehement opposition that it sparked the largest protests that Chile had seen since its return to democracy. By analysing discourse in influential print and social media during the debate, using interviews with key actors, and strategic communications material from both sides, this study traces the discourse over the megaproject through several key stages. It shows what the symbolic communication of HidroAysén led the megaproject to represent, arguing that when a megaproject becomes layered with multiple symbolic meanings over time, it can become emblematic: a situation which is hard to shift. Though this study focuses on the case of one megaproject in Chile – and indeed shows how the nation was changed by the HidroAysén debate – it also draws wider lessons from the emblematic case of HidroAysén, enabling a better understanding of the communicational unfolding of transnational megaprojects, and the frequently transnational protests that oppose them.

Masters Research - Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
The practice of Community Cultural Development (CCD) is shaped by ideals, ethical standards and socially democratic values. Principles of doing good, altruism, social change, participation, collaboration, even ‘community’ itself are embedded as the dominant operating paradigms. CCD practice has thus attracted a number of assumptions and operational touchstones in its brief history. Drawing on stories from 40 years of CCD work, I question how well have I lived up to these standards in my own practice. These stories focus on several specific projects including: The Ribbons of Steel project marking the closure of BHP Steelmaking in Newcastle in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW), my writer-in-residency at Windale (NSW), my time with Pipi Storm Childrens’ Circus, and my work with Australian Aboriginal communities. In undertaking this journey the essential questions I address are: How can stories reveal a deeper understanding of the principles of our work? What can be understood from these stories of our relationship to the communities in which we work? Such questions require a deep reflection upon and analysis of my own career. Identifying and investigating the underlying philosophical principles, interrogating how well or not I have applied them, and what lessons I have learned in the struggle to cleave to a principled approach lies at the core of this thesis. While I approach this examination from a particularly individual perspective, I situate my work in the broader practice of CCD to demonstrate how the stories may be emblematic – seams that we can mine for knowledge. In so doing I arrive at a deeper understanding and clarity around what are the essential and foundation impulses and principles of CCD work.

Abstract:
The Château d'Anet, France was a hunting lodge and familial residence commissioned and built in the years 1547 to 1555 at the behest of Diane de Poitiers, mistress of King Henri II. The architecture of the château incorporates a set of devices cultivated by Diane to establish an association between herself and Diana, the Roman goddess of the Hunt; these were the crescent moon, the bow and arrow, and Diane's own initials. Devices, which were personal marks chosen to distinguish an individual through the expression of some idealized element of character or aspirations, had primarily appeared at the French Renaissance court in jewelry, clothing, or art. Beginning in the late 15th century, the Valois kings Louis XII and François I took the practice a step further by weaving devices into the architectural fabric of their residences, where they appeared in entrances, walls, balustrades, and dormers; while drawing on this precedent, the Château d'Anet is the first example of a château commissioned by a woman that featured a program of personalized architectural decoration specific to her character, interests, and position. In this thesis, I will catalogue and analyze the emblematic architectural decorations that permeate both the exterior and interior of the structure, focusing on those examples embedded in the exterior stonework. This catalogue will, in turn, lead to an examination of the impact of this imagery on the overall experience of the château in the 16th century, and the influence the château may have had on the perception of Diane de Poitiers at court. By layering the qualities of the goddess over her own attributes, she was able to create a persona that meshed Diane with Diana; the skillful utilization of the aspects of the deity's otherworldly nature, such as her beauty, chastity, and mystique, was very useful in a court enamored with novelty and chivalric romance, where Diane's power and social position depended on her ability to retain the king's interest.
