Abstract:
Videos are well-received methods for storytellers to communicate various narratives. To further engage viewers, we introduce a novel visual medium where data visualizations are embedded into videos to present data insights. However, creating such data-driven videos requires professional video editing skills, data visualization knowledge, and even design talents. To ease the difficulty, we propose an optimization method and develop SmartShots, which facilitates the automatic integration of in-video visualizations. For its development, we first collaborated with experts from different backgrounds, including information visualization, design, and video production. Our discussions led to a design space that summarizes crucial design considerations along three dimensions: visualization, embedded layout, and rhythm. Based on that, we formulated an optimization problem that aims to address two challenges: (1) embedding visualizations while considering both contextual relevance and aesthetic principles and (2) generating videos by assembling multi-media materials. We show how SmartShots solves this optimization problem and demonstrate its usage in three cases. Finally, we report the results of semi-structured interviews with experts and amateur users on the usability of SmartShots.

Abstract:
We study the effectiveness of adaptive interventions at helping users process textual documents with embedded visualizations, a form of multimodal documents known as Magazine-Style Narrative Visualizations (MSNVs). The interventions are meant to dynamically highlight in the visualization the datapoints that are described in the textual sentence currently being read by the user, as captured by eye-tracking. These interventions were previously evaluated in two user studies that involved 98 participants reading excerpts of real-world MSNVs during a 1-hour session. Participants’ outcomes included their subjective feedback about the guidance, and well as their reading time and score on a set of comprehension questions. Results showed that the interventions can increase comprehension of the MSNV excerpts for users with lower levels of a cognitive skill known as visualization literacy. In this article, we aim to further investigate this result by leveraging eye-tracking to analyze in depth how the participants processed the interventions depending on their levels of visualization literacy. We first analyzed summative gaze metrics that capture how users process and integrate the key components of the narrative visualizations. Second, we mined the salient patterns in the users’ scanpaths to contextualize how users sequentially process these components. Results indicate that the interventions succeed in guiding attention to salient components of the narrative visualizations, especially by generating more transitions between key components of the visualization (i.e., datapoints, labels, and legend), as well as between the two modalities (text and visualization). We also show that the interventions help users with lower levels of visualization literacy to better map datapoints to the legend, which likely contributed to their improved comprehension of the documents. These findings shed light on how adaptive interventions help users with different levels of visualization literacy, informing the design of personalized narrative visualizations.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We present a case for teaching data analytics skills in auditing classes using the data visualization software Tableau. We use the Tableau-embedded data file “US Superstore,” which we edited to include cash receipts and discounts to provide a complete order to cash cycle. Students learn how to create data visualizations and dashboards, and how to apply them to audit-planning considerations. Students then perform substantive testing of the revenue (order to cash) cycle and identify issues in the data that relate to revenue. We propose that this case material can be tailored by instructors to fit their particular needs and course curriculum. This case provides students with hands-on exposure to data analytic and visualization capabilities. Student feedback was very favorable and student comments indicated that the case was practical, realistic, and informative, and provided them a better understanding of data visualization. Abstract:
A method of precise and real-like embedded systems peripherals visualization in virtual simulations is presented in the article. For high frequency peripheral inputs, blended graphics of real-look representations of peripherals are used, allowing for an accurate visualization with consideration of their input signal nature based on PWM and multiplexing schemes. An accurate simulator of a didactic embedded system called MKD-51 is introduced as a plug in for Keil μVision IDE. A comparison with a real microprocessor system using multiplexing seven-segment LED modules as well as LED bar fed by PWM is shown. The achieved quantity results are included to illustrate compliance with real devices and improvements in visualization accuracy due to applying additional blending mapping function. Brightness estimation differences of LED visualization compared to a real device are at a single percentage level for seven-segment multiplexed modules.

Abstract:
Abstract: During the COVID-19 pandemic, many data visualizations were created to alert the public to the rapidly growing threat. Statistics on the spread of COVID-19 have been displayed on data dashboards, a mechanism for sharing information throughout the pandemic, which has aided in this process. When developing the visuals for COVID-19, the majority of time was spent on the technical aspects of designing and evaluating various visualization methods. Little is understood about the inner workings of visualization production processes due to the complex sociotechnical environments in which they are embedded. However, such ecological data is necessary for identifying the particulars and tendencies of visualization design practices in the wild and generating insights into how artists learn to perceive and approach visualization design on their terms and for their contextual aims. We conducted in-depth interviews with dashboard designers from federal and state health departments, major news media outlets, and other firms that created (often widely used) COVID-19 dashboards to gain insight into the following areas. What kind of problems, disagreements, and conflicts arose during making the COVID-19 dashboard because of the participation of visualization creators? The trajectory of design practices—from genesis to expansion, maintenance, and termination—is determined by the complex interconnections between design goals, design tools and technologies, labour, emerging crisis circumstances, and public participation. We zeroed in on these procedures' tensions between designers and the general public. Conflicts frequently arose due to a chasm between public demands and prevailing policies. They typically centred on the types and amounts of information that should be visualized and how public perceptions shape and are shaped by visualization design. The strategies used to deal with (potential) misinterpretations and misuse of visualizations. Our findings and takeaways offer fresh viewpoints on visualization design by highlighting the bundled activities typically linked with human and nonhuman participation along the entire trajectory of design practice

Abstract:
Abstract Summary iBioProVis is an interactive tool for visual analysis of the compound bioactivity space in the context of target proteins, drugs and drug candidate compounds. iBioProVis tool takes target protein identifiers and, optionally, compound SMILES as input, and uses the state-of-the-art non-linear dimensionality reduction method t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE) to plot the distribution of compounds embedded in a 2D map, based on the similarity of structural properties of compounds and in the context of compounds’ cognate targets. Similar compounds, which are embedded to proximate points on the 2D map, may bind the same or similar target proteins. Thus, iBioProVis can be used to easily observe the structural distribution of one or two target proteins’ known ligands on the 2D compound space, and to infer new binders to the same protein, or to infer new potential target(s) for a compound of interest, based on this distribution. Principal component analysis (PCA) projection of the input compounds is also provided, Hence the user can interactively observe the same compound or a group of selected compounds which is projected by both PCA and embedded by t-SNE. iBioProVis also provides detailed information about drugs and drug candidate compounds through cross-references to widely used and well-known databases, in the form of linked table views. Two use-case studies were demonstrated, one being on angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) protein which is Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Spike protein receptor. ACE2 binding compounds and seven antiviral drugs were closely embedded in which two of them have been under clinical trial for Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19). Abstract:
Artificial neural networks are efficient learning algorithms that are considered to be universal approximators for solving numerous real-world problems in areas such as computer vision, language processing, or reinforcement learning. To approximate any given function, neural networks train a large number of parameters—up to millions, or even billions in some cases. The large number of parameters and hidden layers in neural networks make them hard to interpret, which is why they are often referred to as black boxes. In the quest to make artificial neural networks interpretable in the field of computer vision, feature visualization stands out as one of the most developed and promising research directions. While feature visualizations are a valuable tool to gain insights about the underlying function learned by the network, they are still considered to be simple visual aids requiring human interpretation. In this paper, we propose that feature visualizations—class visualizations in particular—are analogous to mental imagery in humans, resembling the experience of seeing or perceiving the actual training data. Therefore, we propose that class visualizations contain embedded knowledge that can be exploited in a more automated manner. We present a series of experiments that shed light on the nature of class visualizations and demonstrate that class visualizations can be considered a conceptual compression of the data used to train the underlying model. Finally, we show that class visualizations can be regarded as convolutional filters and experimentally show their potential for extreme model compression purposes.

Relying on a multimethod approach with eye tracking, cued retrospective reporting, and a memory test, this experimental study ( N = 45) shows how individuals engage with static, interactive, and interactive-animated data visualizations embedded in online science news. The results suggest that interactivity and animation engage participants most strongly: The second part of the news article is fixated the longest by participants exposed to the interactive-animated visualization, which translates into higher learning outcomes. However, the dynamic process of news reception requires a nuanced understanding of how users attend to visual and textual parts of a message to make informed statements about their effectiveness.

Abstract:
Neural networks are widely used in fruit sorting and have achieved some success. However, due to the limitations of storage space and power consumption, the storage and computing of a neural network model on embedded devices remain a massive challenge. Aiming at realizing a lightweight mango sorting model, the feature-extraction characteristics of the shallow and deep networks of the SqueezeNet model were analyzed by a visualization method, and then eight lightweight models were constructed by removing redundant layers or modifying the convolution kernel. It was found that the model designated Model 4 performed well after training and testing. The class activation mapping method was used to explain the basis of the classification decision, and the model was compared with ten classical classification models. The results showed that the calculation performance of the model was significantly improved without reducing accuracy. The parameter storage requirement is 0.87 MB, and the calculation amount is 181 MFLOPS, while the average classification accuracy can still be maintained at 95.64%. This model has a high-cost performance and can be widely used in embedded devices.

The self-organizing convolutional map (SOCOM) hybridizes convolutional neural networks, self-organizing maps, and gradient backpropagation optimization into a novel integrated unsupervised deep learning model. SOCOM structurally combines, architecturally stacks, and algorithmically fuses its deep/unsupervised learning components. The higher-level representations produced by its underlying convolutional deep architecture are embedded in its topologically ordered neural map output. The ensuing unsupervised clustering and visualization operations reflect the model’s degree of synergy between its building blocks and synopsize its range of applications. Clustering results are reported on the STL-10 benchmark dataset coupled with the devised neural map visualizations. The series of conducted experiments utilize a deep VGG-based SOCOM model.

We have developed a procedure for visualizing GFP expression in fixed tissue after embedding in LR White. We find that GFP fluorescence survives fixation in 4% paraformaldehyde/0.1% glutaraldehyde and can be visualized directly by fluorescence microscopy in unstained, 1-μm sections of LR White-embedded material. The antigenicity of the GFP is retained in these preparations, so that GFP localization can be visualized in the electron microscope after immunogold labeling with anti-GFP antibodies. The ultrastructural morphology of tissue fixed and embedded by this protocol is of quality sufficient for subcellular localization of GFP. Thus, expression of GFP constructs can be visualized in living tissue and the same cells relocated in semithin sections. Furthermore, semithin sections can be used to locate GFP-expressing cells for examination by immunoelectron microscopy of the same material after thin sectioning.

Abstract:
The present study conducted a randomized control trial to assess the efficacy of two spatial intervention programs aimed to improve Grade 4 (N = 287) students’ spatial visualization skills and math performance. The first treatment (N = 98) focused on isolated spatial training that included 40 min of digital spatial training across fourteen weeks. The second treatment (N = 92) embedded spatial visualization skill development into math lessons, along with the digital spatial training that provided practice of the newly acquired skills. A business-as-usual group acted as a control (N = 97). Engagement with the embedded intervention program (i.e., both lessons and digital training) showed large additive effects, highlighting the role of spatial reasoning tools to support the transfer of spatial reasoning to math. The isolated intervention program with the digital spatial training had a transfer effect on math, compared to a business-as-usual control, while spatial reasoning improvements for this group were mixed. The spatial skills targeted in the digital training had a mediation effect on math performance, despite not increasing in the pre–post-test design. The effects of the digital training cohort were moderated by initial spatial skill, with students with lower spatial reasoning making the least gains in math.

Abstract:
One of the goals of information visualization is to support human thinking through the use of external visual aids. Mathematical mindtools can act as visual cognitive aids to enhance thinking and reasoning about mathematical objects and concepts. Although some mathematical mindtools incorporate information visualization techniques, the systematic use of these techniques in the design of these tools and their effect on users’ thinking and reasoning need to be investigated. A mathematical mindtool called PARSE (Platonic-Archimedean Solids Explorer) is presented in this paper. PARSE is intended to support the exploration and learning of a subset of geometric shapes. The mathematical objects and concepts embedded in PARSE have been enhanced using information visualization techniques. A usability study of PARSE and its information visualization techniques have been conducted and reported. The study shows that information visualization techniques enhance and support learning and exploration of mathematical concepts. The findings reported in this paper suggest that mathematical mindtools provide a fertile ground for investigating different information visualization techniques and their effectiveness in supporting learning tasks.

Visualizations play a considerable role in explaining trends or providing evidence when consuming data online. Whether those visualizations are shared on news outlets or social networks, platforms usually allow readers to discuss their stories in comments sections. For the scope of this work, we studied the online communityr/dataisbeautiful on Reddit. We found that chart creators were using a variety of authoring tools to share their content. Readers of these posts, commenters, used text mainly to discuss and critique the visual content. We noticed a need for a richer mode of communication that would show instead of telling authors what to do. Based on our findings, we introducedVizdat, a lightweight tool and extension to allow users to visualize and reproduce charts in the comments sections of data stories. We usedVizdat as atechnology probe with 11 Reddit users to create data visualization and discuss charts onr/dataisbeautiful. During the four-week field deployment period, we observed howVizdat was used and interviewed the participants. We found thatcommenters saw value in accessing the visualization specifications throughVizdat and used those charts to structure their replies with richer modalities. As a result, visualizationauthors appreciated the feedback and less toxic discussion provided through comments embedded with modified versions of their charts. In our paper, we share these findings and other insights to understand the dynamics of forum discussion around charts.

In this paper we use clustering algorithm to improve the embedded network system, and use JSP technology to enhance the real-time and interactive of system, develop the aerobics visualization movement system, which realizes the interactive action between teachers and students. In order to test the performance of the system, we use AMBE-2000 as communication module to test the video compression and processing functions of embedded system. The results show that the compression ratio is big, the flow is small, and compression time is short. It is a stable and reliable network system. It provides a new method for embedded computer system in sports teaching.

Abstract:
When Galileo published Sidereus Nuncius in 1610, he introduced the visualization aspects of astronomy. While his portrayals of the Earth’s moon utilized his considerable talents in perspective and chiaroscuro drawing, the satellites of Jupiter were mere points of light depicted by star symbols embedded within his printed text. Within fifty years, the Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660) of Andreas Cellarius illustrated different cosmologies that included, when logically appropriate, Jupiter with companions of different sizes orbiting at different distances. Telescopic photographs and satellite images of Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto did not appear until the twentieth century. Yet, from the late seventeenth century up to the present time, illustrations, paintings and sculptures of the Galilean moons continued to appear in a remarkable breadth of uses and styles.

Abstract:
Abstract The paper contributes to the design and implementation of the ultrasonic positioning system based on new multifunctional hardware components, newly released. A moving object coordinates’ determination is described analytically and a matrix equation in respect to unknown coordinates with coefficients, measurement distances, is derived. Stages of data packet processing are formulated, and a pseudo pyramid of measurement distances is built. HX7TR multifunctional ultrasonic devises, transceivers, are used to implement the positioning system. A C# program source code for coordinate determination and 3D visualization is created. The algorithm for moving object coordinate computation, and its program realization as well as HX7TR ultrasonic devises can be used in development of indoor ultrasonic positioning systems embedded in IoT and robotics applications.

Abstract:
The article is based on the methodology of selecting publications for reviewing proposed earlier (see Scientific and Technical Journal. 2022. No. 11. Р. 56–82). This methodology enables to systematize the process of publication selection with the results cited in the protocol. The “embedded librarianship” concept definition is based on the activity component. Three subject vectors are high-lighted in visualization of the study subject scope, namely, librarians in medical environment, librarians in education, and librarians involved in scientific research. The conventional embedded librarian’s profile is formulated, with the professional functionality described and environment characterized. The specialist’s basic competences are information literacy and client orientation. Being complemented with unique competences, the basic skills enable the embedded librarians to transfer from the status of resource-users agent to that of research group full-fledged participant. The author suggests her adapted translations of the concept names.“Embedded librarianship” has substantial potential within the framework of scientific research information support in the form of reviews, which explains why the reviews are seen as an informative source, in particular for the librarians developing library programs with “embedded” information services. The concept may be used for organizing services in research and academic libraries.

Abstract:
We briefly introduce an interactive visualization model, RuleViz, for knowledge discovery and data mining, which consists of five components: data preparation and visualization, interactive data reduction, data preprocessing, pattern discovery, and pattern visualization. With this model, the implementation issues are considered and three implementation paradigms, including image-based paradigm, algorithm-embedded paradigm, and interaction-driven paradigm, are discussed. We implement an interactive visualization system, AViz, which discovers 3D numerical association rules from large data sets based on the image-based paradigm. The framework of the AViz system is presented and each component is explored. To discretize numerical attributes, three approaches, including equal-sized, bin-packing-based equal-depth, and interaction-based approaches are proposed, and the algorithm for mining and visualizing numerical association rules is developed. Our experimental result on a census data set is illustrated, which shows that the AViz system is useful and helpful for discovering and visualizing numerical association rules.

Abstract:
<p>This study aims to investigate the acceptance of ICT teachers pertaining to the use of Scratch as an Algorithm Visualization (AV) software in terms of perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. An embedded mixed method research design was used in the study, in which qualitative data were embedded in quantitative ones and used to explain the results. The data were collected from 214 pre-service ICT teachers studying in four large public universities. Data was gathered through a questionnaire adapted from David’s Technology Acceptance Survey (1989) and through open-ended questions. T-test and Pearson correlation, as well as descriptive statistics, were used to analyze quantitative data and constant analysis techniques were used to analyze qualitative data. Both kinds of data were mixed and are presented in the results section. The results show that pre-service ICT teachers mainly have positive and similar Scratch acceptance scores in terms of usefulness and ease of use. The factors explaining participants’ perceived usefulness are identified as visual interface (37%), pedagogy(36%), and computational thinking (27%). The majority of the participants also found Scratch to be easy to use. Pre-service ICT teachers explained that what makes AV software easy to use is color separation (40%), drag and drop (30%), and familiar interface (30%). Additionally, no significant difference between the acceptance scores of the participants was found in terms of gender, years of programming experience, programming background, and the high school they graduated from as indicators of programming experience. Results congruent with previous studies regarding Scratch were found by the current study.</p>

Abstract:
In this report we describe a specific staining procedure for detection of ribonucleic acid (RNA), based on bromination of uracil and subsequent immunohistochemical visualization of 5-bromouracil in RNA. This method is applicable for both cryostat and glycol methacrylate (GMA)-embedded sections. Cryostat sections must be fixed in formaldehyde, whereas tissue pieces to be embedded in GMA are fixed in cold acetone. Before bromination, sections must be treated with trypsin. Bromination was performed in a solution of bromine in potassium bromide. After bromination, excess bromine was removed with sodium bisulfite. The monoclonal antibody MoBu-1 specifically bound to brominated RNA. Ribonuclease digestion, in contrast to deoxyribonuclease digestion, abolished staining. This method makes possible precise localization of RNA, especially well demonstrated in plastic-embedded sections.

Abstract:
For damage indication needs in polymer composites, three smart acrylic coatings based on microencapsulated crystal violet lactone leuco dye with embedded developer silica gel and methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate were elaborated. Damage visualization ability upon duralumin substrates was tested. Indentation tests were conducted in the interval of 0.0005–0.55 J of mechanical work. Digital image analysis was used for evaluation of the visual response in the form of “bruise” spots. The measure of response intensity was relative excess of blue color above achromatic gray in the scanned images of the “bruise” spots. This technique allowed detecting influence of the coating formulations onto the substrate damage visualization.

Abstract:
Research on visualizing Semantic Web data has yielded many tools that rely on information visualization techniques to better support the user in understanding and editing these data. Most tools structure the visualization according to the concept definitions and interrelations that constitute the ontology’s vocabulary. Instances are often treated as somewhat peripheral information, when considered at all. These instances, that populate ontologies, represent an essential part of any knowledge base. Understanding instance-level data might be easier for users because of their higher concreteness, but instances will often be orders of magnitude more numerous than the concept definitions that give them machine-processable meaning. As such, the visualization of instance-level data poses different but real challenges. The authors present a visualization technique designed to enable users to visualize large instance sets and the relations that connect them. This visualization uses both node-link and adjacency matrix representations of graphs to visualize different parts of the data depending on their semantic and local structural properties. The technique was originally devised for simple social network visualization. The authors extend it to handle the richer and more complex graph structures of populated ontologies, exploiting ontological knowledge to drive the layout of, and navigation in, the representation embedded in a smooth zoomable environment.

Abstract:
AbstractSoftware testing is key for quality assurance of embedded systems. However, with increased development pace, the amount of test results data risks growing to a level where exploration and visualization of the results are unmanageable. This paper covers a tool, Tim, implemented at a company developing embedded systems, where software development occurs in parallel branches and nightly testing is partitioned over software branches, test systems and test cases. Tim aims to replace a previous solution with problems of scalability, requirements and technological flora. Tim was implemented with a reference group over several months. For validation, data were collected both from reference group meetings and logs from the usage of the tool. Data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The main contributions from the study include the implementation of eight views for test results exploration and visualization, the identification of four solutions patterns for these views (filtering, aggregation, previews and comparisons), as well as six challenges frequently discussed at reference group meetings (expectations, anomalies, navigation, integrations, hardware details and plots). Results are put in perspective with related work and future work is proposed, e.g., enhanced anomaly detection and integrations with more systems such as risk management, source code and requirements repositories.

Cyber-attacks threaten the safety of cyber physical systems (CPSs) as a result of the existence of weaknesses in the multiple structural units constituting them. In this paper, three cyber physical systems case studies of a pressurized water nuclear power plant (NPP), an industrial control system (ICS), and a vehicular network system (VNS) are examined, formally presented, and implemented utilizing Architecture Analysis and Design Language, determining system design, links, weaknesses, resources, potential attack instances, and their pre-and post-conditions. Then, the developed plant models are checked with a security property using JKind model checker embedded software. The attack graphs causing plants disruptions for the three applications are graphically visualized using a new graphical user interface (GUI) windows application.
