Abstract: Using a Riemann Solver numerical method, a study to evaluate the process of evolution of roll waves in closed channels was implemented. The whole study is based on the phenomena of hyperbolic gravity waves propagation. It was used a one-dimensional model to represent the dynamics of roll waves. Initially an analysis of the propagation wave velocities involved on to the stratified flow was done, a weak coupling between the wave propagation phenomena more closely related to fluid compressibility and wave propagation phenomena more closely related to the change in the void fraction, due the gravity waves, was verified. The results of this analysis were used to justify a roll wave modeling considering the fluids as incompressible. Numerical tests were also performed, showing that the hypothesis of incompressible fluids does not lead to a loss of quality in the modeling of gravity waves in closed channels. It was observed a fragility of the hydrostatic pressure profile assumption to modeling unstable stratified flow. It was proposed a modification to this pressure profile, considering the dynamic effects of the roughness interface. Comparisons were made with experimental results from the literature for the liquid film in laminar and experiments made for the film of liquid in turbulent flow. This comparison between simulations and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model is consistent

With the determination of conditions of shock and the velocity of propagation of wave in a critical point; we can observe the formation of Roll Waves such in fluids non-Newtonians (Herschel- Bulkley, Bingham, Power law) as Newtonian fluids.

Full textA prototype 445 MHz continuous-wave transillumination instrument designed for underground use is described. Test surveys, with this instrument, were conducted at the Big Nickel Mine in Sudbury, Ontario, to obtain a number of through-rock absorption rates. Estimated effective resistivities of between 500 and 1500 ohm-metres are determined from the survey data.
Effective conductivities and permittivities from AC and DC electrical property measurements on geological samples from the mine site corroborate these transillumination survey results.
The results of the field surveys indicate that the UHF-EM transillumination technique is a feasible and useful geophysical method.

Full textThis work aims the development of a simplified simulator to assist the study about regular waves generation in test tanks equipped with segmented type wavemakers, focusing on the study about the Calibrador Hidrodinâmico (Hydrodynamics Calibrator), test tank inaugurated in 2010 at University of São Paulo. This simplified simulator uses punctual wave sources to represents each wavemaker end its main advantage is the computational time economy in comparison with analysis of the potential boundary problem made on frequency domain using, as example, the boundary elements method (BEM). To verify the developed tool validity, comparisons with bi-dimensional wave generation tests carried out on a flume were made. In three dimensional case, the comparisons were made with results provided by the program Wamit, which one solves the potential boundary problem. In all comparisons the results achieved were very good. Once proved the validity of simulator results, it was applied to analyze three different operational configurations of the Calibrador Hidrodinâmico, which can be implemented in future. The analysis showed that there is not a configuration with best results for all periods and propagation angles inside the tank operational limits and these results can be used to define a operation procedure that aims to ensure more flexibility on wavemakers operation to obtain the best possible wave field quality for all periods and propagation angles.

Full textThis work, performed at the New Materials and Devices Group (GNMD) of the Microelectronics Laboratory of the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo, presents the modeling of a miniaturized passive phase shifter with low losses for applications in millimeter waves. It is based on an innovated concept, which uses distributed MEMS phase shifters and slow-wave coplanar wave guides. Such concept is proposed under the FAPESP Youth Researcher project (Process number 2011/18167-3). The phase shifter on this kind of device is achieved by releasing the shielding layer of the Shielded-Coplanar Waveguide. The released ribbons are electrostatically displaced, which does not consume energy. The aim of this project is to design a phase shifter for fabrication with the technology available at the Microelectronics Laboratory. Additionally, this work presents experimental results of a flip-chip fabrication process. This technology is based on next generation of fine pitch copper pillar bumping, with pillar pitch of less than 100 ?m that support next generation of communication devices at the millimeter wave frequency range. From the fabrication point-of-view, highly miniaturized copper pillars with appropriate thicknesses were obtained. Furthermore, the results obtained represent a significant advance in the fabrication process that will be used as a hybrid integration technology on an interposer based on a nanoporous alumina substrate (MnM-Metallic Nanowire Membrane).

Full textThe oil water separation process of petroleum emulsions is performed during the primary processing of crude oil and consists of water droplets coalescence. To minimize the use of demulsifiers and accelerate the emulsion separation process some equipment may be used such as acoustic separators. In this work, a radiation force technique produced by ultrasound standing waves is applied to the water phase separation in oil emulsions. Ultrasound cells operating at ultrasonic frequencies near 1 MHz are developed using piezoelectric resonators applied to the coalescence of water droplets in oil emulsions. This work involves simulations of the acoustic field through one-dimensional and two-dimensional analytical models and a numerical model for two-dimensional plane strain finite element analysis. Furthermore, experimental verification is performed using high power prototypes for batch separation by comparing the acoustic radiation potential and electrical impedance with computational models results. Several tests of synthesized petroleum emulsions breaking are performed using an experimental laboratory apparatus applying up to 600 W=l. A frequency control system is implemented in order to maintain maximum electric power transmission to the cells. The results showed that the technique can halve the use of chemical demulsifier (from 20 to 10 ppm) or decrease the residence time of up to 60% (from 20 to 8 min). An analysis of the frequency influence on demulsification efficiency is performed and indicates that there is no parameter sensitivity in the frequency range between 0.8 and 1.5 MHz at room temperature of approximately 23 C. It is demonstrated that the design methodology is consistent and the application has potential for large-scale development.

This work is about gravity waves generated by solid mass impact into liquid. Several essays with granular material, simulating a landslide, were conduced in a wave channel provided with an upstream ramp where glass spheres and pebbles (with two different diameter intervals) slide the ramp generating submersion waves. The wave channel is located at UNESP – Ilha Solteira’s Hydraulics and Hydrometrics Laboratory. Its dimension is 0,30 m (width), 0,50 m (high) and 10,00 m (length). The depth of water was from 0,13 m up to 0,20 m. Some properties of the complex physic process of landslide generated waves were investigated: granular material’s velocity field (trough cinematography method and image treatment); wave height was founded with micro controlled capacitance wave gauges; and orbital velocity was acquired by Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV) gauges. The main aim was to validate a numeric model developed by Maciel (1991) further improved by Nascimento (2001) for granular material generated waves. The experimental essays were essential to the validation of the Serre’s equation based model for granular material (do not contemplated by other works in the literature). A lagrangean numeric model was briefly tested (Anexo III). The energy transfer of the granular material to waves was also analyzed with purpose to evaluate the fraction of the solid’s kinematics energy was converted in wave’s kinematics and potential energies. In the engineering context, this work brings a chapter with several analytic, semi-empiric and empiric methods of water wave’s height estimation. They are based on geometric characteristics and slide’s dynamics. Another chapter compares those methods.
