Abstract:
Sacoglossan sea slugs are one of the best known examples of specialist herbivores in the marine environment and can be found strongly associated with their algal hosts and food sources. Perhaps the most intriguing characteristic of many sacoglossans is their ability to sequester functional chloroplasts from their algal food sources in a process called kleptoplasty. Despite this, there continues to be issues regarding taxonomic identification of species. In turn, the ecological characteristics of many of these slugs, such as algal host and food source preference, as well as their behavioral aspects, have received little attention. A prime example of these issues arises in one such kleptoplastic sacoglossan found at Sunset Beach, Tarpon Springs, USA. The slug had previously been identified as Elysia patina based on a recent description, but later evidence suggested this was incorrect. Furthermore, despite the evidence found for the slug’s photosynthetic capabilities, little was known of its ecological relationships and behavior. The purposes of this study were to: 1) correct the uncertain taxonomy of the Tarpon Springs slug previously identified as Elysia patina, and 2) explore the ecological and behavioral characteristics of the slug. First, a comparative study was performed between the Tarpon Springs slug and its original description, as well as descriptions for the superficially-similar congener slug, Elysia papillosa. The gross anatomy, dorsal surface vascular morphology, radular morphology, egg mass morphology, and developmental timeline of the Tarpon Springs slug were used as means of comparison with the previous descriptions. The results of the comparison show that the Tarpon Springs slug was in fact E. papillosa rather than E. patina, and that the most recent description used to identify the slug as E. patina was incorrect and should not be used. Second, a descriptive study of the ecological and behavioral aspects of E. papillosa at the Sunset Beach site were performed. From October 2014 to September 2015, bi-weekly algal collections were made to determine the seasonal abundance of the slug and a possible relationship between slug abundance and algal abundance. Next, a second collection study was performed bi-monthly from April to July 2016 to identify the preferred algal host of E. papillosa between the three most abundant rhizophytic algae at the site, Penicillus capitatus, Penicillus lamourouxii, and Halimeda incrassata, all of which have been previously reported as being hosts of E. papillosa. The results of these studies showed no relationship between slug abundance and algal abundance, however E. papillosa was found to have a seasonal population fluctuation, with the fewest slugs found in winter and summer months and the most slugs found in the spring and fall months, especially in April and May. Elysia papillosa was also found in significantly higher numbers on the alga P. capitatus compared to the other two algal species, although some slugs were found on P. lamourouxii. Only one slug was found on H. incrassata, indicating it is not being used as a host despite previous reports. Further exploration into the genetics of sequestered chloroplasts would provide critical details into E. papillosa’s feeding behavior in situ. Lastly, because of E. papillosa’s photosynthetic abilities, an experiment was performed to determine if E. papillosa exhibited phototactic behavior. Fully-fed slugs were found to have no preference for either light or dark conditions, indicating their behavior was not being influenced by their photosynthetic abilities. This information provides a means of comparison with future studies of the phototactic behavior of kleptoplastic slugs, and could provide insight into how the longevity of functional chloroplasts in each species of slug could influence their behavior.

The genus Elysia Risso, 1818 compraises almost a third of all described species of the order Sacoglossa, which is represented by animals with unique evolutionary traits or rare in the animal world. In Brazil, eight valid species are recorded to date: Elysia canguzua, Elysia chitwa, Elysia evelinae, Elysia flava, Elysia ornata, Elysia serca, Elysia subornata and Elysia tuca. Even though numerous, the genus is poorly studied anatomically, with the most recent work focused only to the external morphology, coloration and radula. Thus, the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the described species are not known enough to determine synapomorphies, which characterizes Elysia as a paraphyletic genus. In order to add information to understand the complex of the genus Elysia, we performed a detailed characterization of the digestive, reproductive and nervous systems, as well as external differentiation of the species found. Two species not formally named for Science were described and compared with valid species. Morphological features, such as the presence of ornamentation, pericardial hump length and anastomosis dorsal shape of the parapodia, are important for species identification. The color differs mainly in the presence of black, blue and orange pigments. The reproductive system is differentiated by the type of system (androdiaulic or triaulic), the number of hermaphrodites The reproductive system is differentiated by the type of system (or androdiáulico triáulico), the number of hermaphrodite ampoules, the occurrence of genital receptacle and its connection with the oviduct, the shape the prostate gland and the penis and the duct’s arrangement. The digestive system, although very similar among species, differs mainly in the form of the buccal mass and the ascus’ position, the size of the esophagus and esophageal pouch, the occurrence of folds in the stomach and intestines and the position of the anus. Radula, although not being a strong diagnostic characteristic for the identification of Elysia, provides valuable information about the species. The nervous system had also an important role in species identification, by distinct the size of ganglia, commissures and nerves. The addition of these data together with photographs of living specimens and electron microscopy of the radula, make this work updates the knowledge about the species found in the last century in the country. Although many recent studies show the importance of photosynthetic capacity, molecular approach or larval development in Elysia’s complex to solve the paraphilia status of the genus, the anatomy and morphology proves crucial in this process.

Abstract:
The sacoglossan sea slug, Elysia chlorotica, feeds upon and sequesters plastids from the heterokont alga, Vaucheria litorea, and maintains the metabolically active organelles for up to nine months under starvation conditions while utilizing the photosynthate to survive and reproduce. The photosynthetic pigment, chlorophyll a (Chla), is found in all oxygenic photosynthetic organisms and is responsible for capturing photons of light and converting them into chemical energy. Chlorophyll and its associated proteins involved in the light capturing process are subject to photo oxidative damage and must be continually replaced for ongoing photosynthesis to continue; however, genes encoding these proteins are present in the algal nucleus, presenting a conundrum for sustained plastid photosynthetic activity outside the algal cell. One possibility is that Chla is synthesized by the E. chlorotica-kleptoplast association, due to transfer of algal nuclear genes to the sea slug genome. For this study, molecular and biochemical techniques were employed to determine if Chla is synthesized by the animal. Using algal transcriptome sequences for primer design and amplification of target DNA using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), we have identified and sequenced three algal nuclear-encoded gene fragments that correspond to enzymes in the chlorophyll synthesis pathway and one enzyme in the porphyrin synthesis pathway in adult slug and veliger larvae. Sequences from these genes were nearly identical to those present in the alga. Furthermore, these genes are functional; incubation of slugs with radiolabeled 5-aminolevulinic acid (14C-5-ALA), a precursor of chlorophyll biosynthesis, resulted in production of 14C-labeled chlorophyll, as assayed and identified via HPLC resolution of extracts from slugs. In addition, Chla synthesis in the animal occurs for at least six months under starvation conditions. The discovery of chlorophyll synthesis in E. chlorotica is the first animal known to synthesize Chla; moreover, this finding helps elucidate how ongoing photosynthesis can occur in the sea slug after many months in the absence of its algal food.

Middlebrooks, Michael Louis. "Consequences of Kleptoplasty on the Distribution, Ecology, and Behavior of the Sacoglossan Sea Slug, Elysia clarki." Scholar Commons, 2012. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4162.

Abstract:
The sacoglossan sea slug Elysia clarki is able to photosynthesize for three to four months using chloroplasts sequestered from its algal food sources. Furthermore, the slug is able to store multiple chloroplasts from different algal species within the same cell. This research, consisting of several related studies, explores the role that provision of organic nutrients via photosynthesis plays in the biology of the slug. The first chapter demonstrates that, under conditions of starvation, photosynthetic activity in E. clarki remains fully functional for one month after which it then declines. During the first month of starvation the slug exhibits similar feeding behavior as slugs provided a continuous supply of food, suggesting that photosynthesis delays the onset of starvation-induced behavioral changes. The second chapter explores E. clarki's spatial relationships with algae known to be food sources in the field. In areas with high slug density, edible algal populations were very low. DNA barcoding was employed to demonstrate that the algae found near slugs were poor predictors of which foods were actually consumed by slugs. Generally, there was a mismatch between algae available in the field and slug diets. The third chapter explores how E. clarki is able to maintain photosynthesis. After labeling with a C14 ALA incubation process, then chlorophyll was extracted from slugs and purified using HPLC. Results indicate that recently collected E. clarki are able to synthesize chlorophyll, whereas slugs starved for 3 months were not. Photosynthesis plays a very important role for E. clarki and its relationships with food algae.

Mestrado em Biologia Marinha
This work aims to investigate the role of food and light availability in the photosynthesis and maternal investment of the sea slug Elysia viridis. Two experiments were conducted to test the importance of food – Codium tomentosum – and to test the importance of the autotrophic component with three different food and light regimes, respectively. The results suggest that maternal investment is greater when food exists in abundance and less when animals are starving. A positive relationship was also observed between the abundance of food and the length of the animal, the egg mass area and egg volume. The study investigating the maternal investment in three different light regimes had some experimental limitations; however, it was observed that sea slugs exposed to an average light intensity had a greater investment in reproduction. It can be concluded that both heterotrophic and autotrophic components influence the investment of these sea slugs in their reproduction.

There are two parts in this study. The first one is about Greek surrealism. It recalls first the poetic crisis of the 1920s, then the formation of the 1930s generation that gave birth to modern Greek poetry, and introduced surrealism in Greece. It afterwards presents the surrealist poets of the interwar generation : Andreas Embiricos, Nicolas Calas, Nikos Engonopoulos. The second part is about the poet Odysseas Elytis who occupies a special place among the Greek surrealists. It follows the beginning of his poetry and the growth of his surrealist period as seen in the background of the interwar period

Abstract:
The subject of the present thesis deals with the concept of Greekness in Odysseas Elytis’oeuvre , a comlex topic, the crux of the poet’s aesthetics. The thesis begins with an approach to the evolution of the notion of Greekness throughout time. The author pinpoints the subject of Greekness as it appears in the work of Elytis’ predecessors studying the reasons that led to its hatching up in his work. The second part is devoted to an analysis of the work itself, both poems and essays regarded from the angle of their Greekness. It underlines the fact that the concept of Greekness correlates with the geophysical characteristics of Greece, above all with the quality of its light. Thanks to the mysterious influence of light the humble element is elevated and encapsulated in a divine dimension where the divine descends to the level of the tangible and the day to day life. The study also demonstrates how Elytis, without betraying tradition, attempts to revive it through unbridled means of expression. In the third part the writer establishes how recurrent metaphorical images in Elytis’ work transcend the visible rendering Greekness a contemporary spirit. Finally the research proves that the tradition of Greek humanism touches the aspiration of the universal man and that the constituent elements of the peculiarities of the Greece and the values they emanate can enhance the spirit and render it universal

Abstract:
This thesis examines the poetics of Odysseas Elytis, which, it is argued, emerged from his intense theoretical work on poetry in the period between 1944 and 1960, and was crystallized in the poems he published from 1960 to 1995. Elytis' poetics is examined in this thesis through the exploration of his ideas on the status and function of poetry, on the role of the poet, and on poetic writing; it is also examined through the exploration of the poetry in which these ideas are put into practice. It is argued in this thesis that Elytis' poetics emerged from his effort to provide his poetry with a concrete theoretical basis, an endeavour he deliberately undertook in the 1940s and 1950s; the evolution of his thought coincided chronologically with the period broadly between 1944 and 1960, that is, the period during which he wrote poems but did not proceed to publish any book of poetry. Elytis' thought reached a point of external stabilization before 1960, since in the poetry he published that year his ideas are systematically put into practice. With the publication of these poems, his poetics entered the dynamic phase of crystallization, which prevails throughout his poetic writing from 1960 to 1995, and constitutes a process during the course of which he explored the internal perspectives opened up by the theoretical frame he set for himself in the years 1944-1960. This thesis explores Elytis' theoretical endeavour and his poetic practice, and examines both the emergence of his ideas in the period between 1944 and 1960 and the crystallization of these ideas in the poetry he published from 1960 to 1995.

Abstract:
My dissertation deals with the ethical philosophy of the Greek poet and Nobel Prize winner Odysseus Elytis (1911-1996). Responding to the "ethical turn" in literary scholarship, I scrutinize the notion of ethos and ethics, which permeates Elytis' writing, and its place in Elytis' poetic universe. Revolving around Elytis' "theory of analogies," this topic involves a number of diverse and complex literary dialogs, from Plato and Plotinus to German and Greek Romantics, forming part of an unwavering aesthetical and ethical worldview—an alternative cultural, spiritual, and political paradigm Elytis sought to establish. I often encountered little-noticed textual connections which show deeper background contacts, such as the permeating role of Platonism in the literary formation of many among these authors, or Elytis' reading of Friedrich Hölderlin which was at times surprisingly compatible with Heidegger's. I also argue that Elytis' reception of ancient philosophers and poets, such as Empedocles or Pindar, was often intrinsically connected with the ethical considerations of his times. The dissertation includes archival material from the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki and the Gennadius Library in Athens, which confirmed many of my hypotheses about Elytis' intellectual preoccupations.

Abstract:
Through the analysis of a large urban reconstruction project in Beirut, Elyssar, this PHD thesis examines underlying principles of urban planning when its political and technical actors conceptualise the regularisation of irregular settlements. In Lebanon, these are mostly situated in the southern suburbs of the capital where failings of urban planning and competing rights created the conditions under which they developed. Elaborated during a negotiation between Prime minister Hariri and the Shi'ite parties Amal and Hezbollah, the decisions, whether uncontested or resulting from compromises, depended on both the actors' strategies and their perceptions of the city. Three types of reasoning and their links to different value systems have been identified, all used by the actors irrespective of their position. This forms a framework within which the articulation of the perceptions and judgements informing the project decisions and the conditions under which they are implemented can be analysed

Abstract:
Connecting the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, is to follow the steps of the divine purposem so-called ur-mythos (creation, fall, redemption) in biblical mythocriticism, the Bible, this huge reservoir of images, stories and myths, having influenced, according to Northrop Frye, the Western imagination as a unity. As part of this work, we examine at a structural level, the linking of Genesis and Revelation by evaluating the convergences and divergences in the text to explore their meaning, content and nature. Genesis announces the coming of the Apocalypse and Revelation re-writes Genesis. Traverse reading of the Bible shows how the interaction takes place between the biblical text and the poetic text, thus highlight the different conditions of poetic rewritings. We will emphasize the convincing presence of these two biblical books, in the poetic works of Pierre Jean Jouve, Pierre Emmanuel and Odysseus Elytis (Nobel Prize in Literature in 1979), major poets of the twenthieth century whose affinities are many, by revealing the significant biblical elements, myths, images and episodes from Genesis and Revelation in their poetry, then investigate how theses poets appropriated and galvanize this unity from the beginning of the creation to the end of time, from the original sin to the redemption. The question is how and why are these poets inspired from these two books of the Bible? How and by what methods do these poets evoke the poetic experience or even the history through these two biblical myths? Mallarmé said to René Ghil that ’’one cannot get beyond Eden’’. After all, we cannot go beyond our Eden... and our Apocalypse

Abstract:
Relying on traditional paradoxes that theology defined from an angelic essence, the poetry of the twentieth century expresses a universal fascination towards angels. This attraction appears all the more curious as it applies to all observable poetic sensibilities. In addition, these practices turn out to be so diverse and contradictory that angelic appearance acquire a radically original property to withstand any intention of the author, and the even more curious one to escape the immediate intentions of a poet, developing a secondary speech of its own. The angel marks a way of speech in which different instances of poetic discourse coexist in a still unindividuated relation. The angelic messenger indicates the precise moment when the inner chaos of a subject is transformed into articulate language . This exploration of the angelic phenomenon will be divided into three steps, each dedicated to a different corpus. The study of the angel as a visual figure will explore the many variations from an apparition to another, motivated by hesitations of religious, temporal, civilizational, political and aesthetic kind, as they appear in the poetic works of Guillaume Apollinaire for the French literature, and those of Odysseus Elytis in the Greek linguistic area. The analysis of the angel as a support of an intimate relationship of the subject to itself more broadly interrogate the Austro-German poetic experiences on the one hand, the Mexican on the other hand. Eventually, two attempts to form an angelic language in French poetry will be considered, through the respective major works of Patrice de La Tour du Pin and Christian Gabriel/le Guez-Ricord

Abstract:
Between the sage and the politic, a third actor seeks his way out into the modern scene, the poet. Ever since the romantic answer to the first moment of modern thought to the epistemological and social theory of Weber and Simmel, the poet takes a place which gets more and more important although it isn't visible as such. By studying the poetical discourse of the generation of 1930 in Greece through the interaction of intellectual, social and political forces in modern Greece, we offer a perspective view of the political and social engagement of the poet and also of his elaboration of a poetic science of social reality which doesn't differ essentially from Simmel's science of the forms of socialization. This works proposes to reconsider the poetical work and hold it for what it really is, the third pillar, the hidden one, of modern thought

Abstract:
Archaeology, the study of people in the past through their material culture, recognises the potential of space and the built environment to create and transmit social statements. Country houses were dynamic and active elements in the history of Scotland. Landowners did not act in a social vacuum. As society changed, houses, as the clearest physical expression of identity and status, were used to negotiate relations with others, and with the natural world. Houses were used to appeal to traditional power bases, while at the same time allowing a response to, and involvement in, the changing political and social world. This thesis uses a multidisciplinary approach in an attempt to understand architecture not just as art, but as a reflection of, and element in, the social lives and relationships of the people who lived in, worked around, viewed and visited the country house.

Abstract:
This work is part of the study area of the interaction of radiation with polar liquids. Using the picosecond electron accelerator ELYSE, studies were conducted using the techniques of pulse radiolysis combined with absorption spectrophotometry Time-resolved in the field of a picosecond. This work is divided into two separate chapters. The first study addresses the temporal variation of the radiolytic yield of solvated electron in water and simple alcohols. Due to original detection system mounted on the accelerator ELYSE, composed of a flash lamp specifically designed for the detection and a streak-camera used for the first time in absorption spectroscopy, it was possible to record the time-dependent radiolytic yields of the solvated electron from ten picoseconds to a few hundred nanoseconds. The scavenging of the electron solvated by methyl viologen, was utilized to reevaluate the molar extinction coefficient of the absorption spectrum of solvated electron in water and ethanol from isobestic points which corresponds to the intersection of the absorption spectra of solvated electron which disappears and methyl viologen which is formed during the reaction. The second chapter is devoted to the study of liquid organic carbonates such as dimethyl carbonate (DMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC) and propylene carbonate (PC). This family of carbonate wich compose the electrolytes lithium batteries, has never been investigated by pulse radiolysis. The studies were focused on the PC in the light of these physicochemical characteristics, including its very high dielectric constant (64) and its strong dipole moment of 4.9 D. The first results were obtained on aqueous solutions containing propylene carbonate to observe the reactions of reduction and oxidation of PC by radiolytic species of water (solvated electron and OH radicals). Then, after the identification (spectral and kinetic) of the species formed by interaction with the OH radical as the PC• radical resulting from the abstraction of a H from the molecule of PC and the species formed by the interaction with electron as the anion aqueous PC-, other measurements were made in the pure liquid and in the presence of some electron interceptors (biphenyl, anthracene, naphthalene). They give access to the radiolytic yield of PC- and the evaluation of its redox potential. The first results of the DEC and the DMC are also outlined in this section, the pure solvent and then in the presence of biphenyl

Abstract:
This dissertation discusses Aristotle's approach to metaphor, Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Blending Theory, and proposes that the latter constitutes a change of paradigm. I use Blending Theory to model a conceptual pattern generalizing over several case studies of verbal figuration, in different periods of Greek love poetry: ancient Greek lyric, the emergence of the arrows of love in the archaic and classical periods, medieval folksongs, and two 20th century poets, Ritsos and Elytis. All these poetic images share a conceptual pattern that can be modelled with a generic integration network of EROTIC EMISSION. Variation in the realization of the pattern crucially relies on assigning the role of the emitter to the loved person or to an external agent, and on the instantiation of the EMISSION image schema, like light, wind, or an object. Culture and context impose further constraints that can be studied systematically.

Abstract:
The Presidency of the French Fourth Republic reveals the balance of the institutions as well as the political tensions of this period. This aspect is too often neglected in the historiography. The first part of this work specifies the juridical frame of this institution and analyses the administrative working at the Elysée. It shows how through arbitrating politics the president obtains his political influence which is well beyond his legal powers. The second part studies in detail three main domains of the presidential action (his role during the ministerial crisis; the Presidency of the colonial assembly; the official journeys). The third part deals with the question of the presidential representation. The strategies of communication and the chosen symbolic are indeed two of the foundations of the head of state's authority. So the French president can personify the Republic itself and the whole nation

Abstract:
At Piton de La Fournaise, there is no obvious surface manifestations of the hydrothermal system between éruptions. This phenomenon has been explained by the cooling of the volcano, induced by the important rain infiltrations within the structure. In this study, we propose that this highly permeable volcano is cooled by an intense air convection. To support this hypothesis, we study the air flow within a 50 m-large cone located on the volcano from infrared, subsurface temperature, anemometric, gravimetric and ground penetrating radar data. In particular, we determine the relationships between the thermal field and the electric field induced by the air flow within the cone. Finally, these relationships are used to propose that the entire volcano is cooled by air convection. This discovery has important implications for the volcanic structure of other planets. On Mars, we use THEMIS-IR data to study the convective air flow within the permeable soil of Cerberus fractures

Abstract:

Abstract:
Bernard Lallement, French choir director and diplomat, spent his entire professional career in the service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was the first posted to Berlin in 1965 at the time of the Cold War. In the framework of the Élysée Treaty signed two years earlier by Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer, he used his diplomatic skills to develop cooperation between the Germans and the French around choral singing. In fifteen years, he created the first four Franco-German choirs (CFAs) in the cities where he was in office : Berlin, Munich, Paris and Bonn. In 1982, he founded the Federation of CFAs, which includes today ten choirs in Germany and seven choirs in France. His tenacity has made him a key player in civil society engaged in cultural and human relations. Bernard Lallement has always been convinced, together with the signatories of the treaty that young people have a major to play in reconciliation and cooperation. He worked as Deputy Secretary General of the Franco-German Youth Office (OFAJ) from 1979 to 1983. Alongside his professional career, music has been an integral part of his life, both with his composing and direction of choirs. Music and Politics come together on the occasion of the Franco-German commemorative concerts. From the singing of the Treaty in 1963 until its most recent update in Aachen in 2019, the musician diplomat has promoted the cooperation and the deepening of integration between French, German and wider European citizens. OFAJ has become the reference for the youth of other countries. Thanks to Bernard Lallement, the choirshave become the best ambassadors from promoting lasting franco-german relationships
