Abstract:
Following publication in The Antiquaries Journal volume 96 (2016) of ‘Moor Park in the Seventeenth Century’, by Drury, Jeffery and Wrightson, this article presents the results of research by the present four authors on another house by Hugh May – Eltham Lodge, Kent – which survives rather better. Its exterior is often referred to as being relatively unaltered, but analysis of the surviving fabric and much new documentary evidence have nevertheless revealed many interventions, both inside and out, permitting a clearer understanding of the original appearance, layout and setting of this important Restoration house.

Abstract:
A relationship between isoprene and 1,3-butadiene mixing ratios was established to separate the anthropogenic and biogenic fractions of the measured isoprene in London air in both urban background (Eltham) and urban traffic (Marylebone Road) areas over two decades (1997–2017). The average daytime biogenic isoprene mixing ratios over this period reached 0.09 ± 0.04 ppb (Marylebone Road) and 0.11 ± 0.06 ppb (Eltham) between the period of 6:00 to 20:00 local standard time, contributing 40 and 75% of the total daytime isoprene mixing ratios. The average summertime biogenic isoprene mixing ratios for 1997–2017 are found to be 0.13 ± 0.02 and 0.15 ± 0.04 ppb which contribute 50 and 90% of the total summertime isoprene mixing ratios for Marylebone Road and Eltham, respectively. Significant anthropogenic isoprene mixing ratios are found during night-time (0.11 ± 0.04 ppb) and winter months (0.14 ± 0.01 ppb) at Marylebone Road. During high-temperature and high-pollution events (high ozone) there is a suggestion that ozone itself may be directly responsible for some of the isoprene emission. By observing the positive correlation between biogenic isoprene levels with temperature, photosynthetically active radiation and ozone mixing ratios during heatwave periods, the Cobb-Douglas production function was used to obtain a better understanding of the abiotic factors that stimulate isoprene emission from plants. Other reasons for a correlation between ozone and isoprene are discussed. The long-term effects of urban stressors on vegetation were also observed, with biogenic isoprene mixing ratios on Marylebone Road dropping over a 20-year period regardless of the sustained biomass levels.

Abstract:
Ben Eltham’s The Pacific Solution (2013) deals with several issues such as nationalism, political intimidation, racism and stereotyping of Muslims. It critiques the Howard government’s hard-line policy with Asylum seekers and its amendment of the migration act, known as the ‘Pacific Solution’, which excludes offshore islands from Australia’s migration zone and undermines thereby refugees’ attempts to seek better chances of life. This is portrayed on stage through the reaction of three white Australian housemates to the arrival at their front door of an Iraqi refugee to apply for asylum. In this paper, I investigate the representation of cultural diversity in the play and argue that it is a critique of dysfunctional models of inclusion where persons from minor cultures are marginalised in the Australian national and social spaces. In so doing, I consider some of the concepts discussed in Ghassan Hage’s White Nation: Fantasies of White Supremacy in a Multicultural Society (2000), namely those of managerial capacity, tolerance, and the dialectic of inclusion and exclusion. In addition to critiquing the dysfunctional models of including Muslim refugees, the play examines their representation in the mainstream media and their treatment by the legal process in Australia. To explore the impact of this on Muslim refugees’ alienation and marginalisation, I investigate studies of the representation of Muslims in the Australian mass media and their relevance to the stereotyping of Muslims as terrorists in the play. Drawing on the above, I argue that, through this play, Eltham criticised the Howard government’s inhumane treatment of Asylum seekers and its dissemination of Australian norms as aligning with its premises.

Abstract:
In this paper we present the discussions of the Eltham group in the Greenwich Open-Space project, as a case study of the contributions that in-depth small groups can make in the study of environmental values. The major themes of the group discussions are presented, and extracts of dialogue illustrate several aspects of small-group dynamics: how the group establishes its identity, how members negotiate increasing levels of intimacy and trust, how they handle conflict among themselves, and how they deal with termination. These themes demonstrate the importance of the group matrix, the levels of manifest and latent meaning in discourse, and the role of the conductor in facilitating the group structure and processes. We conclude that in-depth small groups are a valuable research strategy for the exploration of the interpenetration of individual and collective values for environment.

Abstract:
The steady state approximation has been applied to the UK National Environment Technology Centre (NETCEN) data at three urban sites in the UK (Marylebone Road London, London Eltham, and Harwell) over the period of 1997 to 2012 to estimate the concentrations of daytime NO3. Despite the common assertion that NO3levels are negligible in the day as a consequence of photolysis, there are occasions where NO3reaches a few pptv. A seasonal pattern in NO3concentration was observed with higher levels in the spring with consistent peaks in April and May. A combination of temperature effects (the formation of NO3from the reaction of NO2with O3has a high activation energy barrier), a distinct pattern in O3concentration (peaking in spring), and loss via reaction with NO peaking in winter is responsible for this trend. Although reaction with OH is still the dominant loss process for VOCs during the day, there are VOCs (unsaturated) that will have an appreciable loss due to reaction with NO3in the daytime. Since the addition reaction of NO3with alkenes can lead directly to organic nitrate formation, there are implications for O3formation and secondary organic aerosol formation during daytime and these are discussed.

Abstract:
As one of seven projects funded by the Victorian Government Department of Human Services to investigate exemplary practice in adolescent health, a study was undertaken in the Department's office in the Northern Metropolitan Region that examined two existing primary health projects: the Keeping in Touch with Schools (KITS) Project, auspiced by the Eltham Community Health Centre and Diamond Valley Secondary College in the City of Nillumbik, and the Youth Counselling Awareness and Support (YCAS) Project, auspiced by Kildonan Family Services in the City of Whittlesea. Proiect features that were explored included elements and type of service, referral pathways and linkages, consumer satisfaction and other service outcomes, elements critical to success, obstacles, supervision and staff training, standards and guidelines, planning and evaluation, promotion of the service, and organisational structure. The study found that a combination of characteristics contributed to the success of the two projects that were examined. These pertain to skills and expertise of staff, flexibility of the service, cost, the type of service model, co-location with other services, linkages and partnerships, outputs and outcomes, feedback, management structure, standards and guidelines, planning processes, and evaluation.

The journey of the Cooper family from small town New Zealand in the early 1920s to Sydney, and then to London, where they arrived in May 1935, provides a frame to look at aspects of social change in the interwar period. Their story, which sees the two daughters of the family appearing in the risqué nude revues at London's Windmill Theatre in the early years of the Second World War, could be viewed as exotic and atypical but does provide a vehicle to look at aspects of cultural change and media influence during a time when “modern women understood self-display to be part of the quest for mobility, self-determination, and sexual identity"1 1 Liz Conor, The Spectacular Modern Woman:Feminine Visibility in the 1920s (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2004), p.29. Abstract:
Ruth Williams was not a typist. She was apt to be put out when the newspapers called her that. In fact she was a secretary, a confidential clerk, with a firm of Lloyds' underwriters in London. On 30 September 1948, at a registry office in Kensington, she married Seretse Khama, heir to the chieftaincy of the Bangwato in the Bechuanaland Protectorate. No-one knew whether the Bangwato would accept a white consort. British newspapers ran features headed ‘Shall typist be a Queen?’ (Sunday Dispatch, 28 November 1948), and ‘This girl can upset the peace of Africa’ (Sunday Express, 10 July 1949). White opinion in South Africa was aghast: the marriage was condemned as ‘distasteful and disturbing’ (Johannesburg Star, 28 June 1949), as ‘striking at the root of white supremacy’ (Natal Witness, 2 July 1949). Ruth's parents opposed the marriage and did not attend the ceremony. Her father, George Williams, was a retired Indian army officer, working as a commercial traveller. Ruth was born in 1923, and brought up in Blackheath and Lewisham. She attended Eltham High School, took polytechnic classes in cookery, and served for four years in the war as a corporal-driver with the W.A.A.F. Together with her sister Muriel, she was a churchgoer, keenly interested in the African work of the London Missionary Society. They were constant visitors to the colonial students' hostel at Nutford Place in Bayswater. It was at an L.M.S. meeting in 1947 that she met Seretse, a quiet, friendly, relaxed and thoroughly Anglicized law student of twenty-seven, with an alert mind and honest manner. The sexual attraction between them was apparently strong. But there was also in their decision to marry a challenging element of anti-apartheid zeal. Ruth abhorred the colour bar, and felt she could do at least as much good in Bechuanaland as missionary wives had done.

Abstract:
AbstractEnglish as a foreign language teachers' associations (henceforth ELTAs) act as empowering platforms for English Language Teaching (ELT) professionals (Lamb, 2012), and yet the contributions of ELTA leaders have not been widely investigated in the fields of second language acquisition and language pedagogy. In order to fill this niche, a qualitative interview study explored the professional trajectories of successful teacher trainers. The paper gives an account of the motivation for continuing professional development (CPD) through the turning points in these professionals' early careers. The findings suggest that there are some similarities behind the motivating factors for CPD and the increasing participation in social spheres (Lave & Wenger, 1991) leads to professional growth. Moving from the periphery towards the centre in a Community of Practice (CoP) the participants of CoPs become knowledge providers. The results reveal that after members have reached their own plateau and can no longer grow professionally in a particular CoP, they either move on to a different, often more challenging CoP and often belong to different CoPs and even end up as the leaders of ELTAs. Limitations and further research suggestions are included at the end of the paper.

Abstract:
Winter wheat cultivar Eltan has been one of the most widely grown cultivars in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. It has shown variable levels of resistance to stripe rust in different years since it was released in 1990. To map all currently effective and defeated resistance genes in Eltan and understand the factors causing the resistance changes, 112 F2:5 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) were developed from a cross of Eltan with cultivar Avocet S. The RILs were evaluated in fields of Pullman, Washington in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 and Mount Vernon, Washington in 2016 and 2017 under natural infections; they were also evaluated in the greenhouse with races PSTv-4 and PSTv-40 of Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici. The RILs were genotyped with the 90K Illumina iSelect wheat single-nucleotide polymorphism chip. A total of five quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were identified in Eltan. Two major QTLs on chromosome arms 2BS and 4AL were detected in the greenhouse tests, explaining up to 28.0 and 42.0% of phenotypic variation, respectively. The two race-specific QTLs were also detected in some field experiments but with reduced effects. A minor QTL on 5BS was detected in the greenhouse and field tests, explaining 10.0 to 14.8% of the phenotypic variation. The other two minor QTLs were mapped on 6AS and 7BL and detected only in field experiments, explaining up to 20.5 and 13.5% of phenotypic variation, respectively. All stripe rust samples collected in the experimental fields in 2015 and 2016 were identified as P. striiformis f. sp. tritici races virulent on seedlings of Eltan. The resistance reduction of Eltan was caused by changes of the P. striiformis f. sp. tritici population from avirulent to virulent, overcoming the race-specific all-stage resistance in Eltan.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT One of the most common bacterially mediated diarrheal infections is caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains. ETEC-derived plasmids are responsible for the distribution of the genes encoding the main toxins, namely, the heat-labile and heat-stable enterotoxins. The origins and transfer modes (intra- or interplasmid) of the toxin-encoding genes have not been characterized in detail. In this study, we investigated the DNA regions located near the heat-labile enterotoxin-encoding genes (eltAB) of several clinical isolates. It was found that the eltAB region is flanked by conserved 236- and 280-bp regions, followed by highly variable DNA sequences which consist mainly of partial insertion sequence (IS) elements. Furthermore, we demonstrated that rearrangements of the eltAB region of one particular isolate, which harbors an IS91R sequence next toeltAB, could be produced by a recA-independent but IS91 sequence-dependent mechanism. Possible mechanisms of dissemination of IS element-associated enterotoxin-encoding genes are discussed.

Abstract:
This essay seeks to show that The Rock of Modrec occupies an important place in Thelwall's oeuvre and in the early development of Jacobin ‘seditious allegory’. While scholarship has thus far ignored The Rock of Modrec on account of its apparent juvenilia and ostensible apoliticism, I argue that Thelwall's chivalric romance allegorizes the British spirit as a champion of liberty and universal emancipation, and that it does so for a popular audience. Furthermore, its protagonist serves as a model for Jacobin allegorical reading practices: Sir Eltram begins as a passive receiver of ‘politico-sentimental’ appeals but eventually becomes an active allegorical interpreter, capable of reading into texts the universal truth of democratic liberty for which the British Jacobins strove. The Rock of Modrec thus serves as both an early example of Thelwall's use of ‘seditious allegory’ and a meta-textual commentary on the importance of allegorical reading as Jacobin radical praxis.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The interest focusing on Eriobotrya japonica leaf triterpene acid (ELTA) has increased recently because of its beneficial effects on health. However, there has been a lack of experimental data on its toxicity. The present study therefore was conducted to evaluate its toxicity in ICR mice. The results showed that ELTA produced neither mortality nor toxicity of the main organs in ICR male and female mice in both acute (0.30, 0.65, 1.39, and 3.00 g·kg−1 body weight) and subacute (150, 300, and 600 mg·kg−1 BW) 28-day toxicity studies. Because of lacking apparently adverse effects found in the hematology, clinical biochemistry, and histopathology evaluation, results of the present study together with the beneficial effects make ELTA as a promising dietary supplement and indicated that ELTA administered orally might have a large safety margin for human.

Abstract:
197 Background: Overexpression of exportin 1 (XPO1) in malignant cells increases the nuclear export/inactivation of tumor suppressor proteins (eg. p53), and promotes the translation of eIF4E-bound oncoprotein mRNAs (eg. c-MYC). XPO1 inhibition reduces total androgen receptor levels, including ARv7, and may re-sensitize prostate cancer (PC) cells to androgen deprivation therapy. Selinexor, the first-in-human SINE compound, showed anticancer activity in patients (pts) with mCRPC. Eltanexor (ELTA), a second-generation SINE compound, showed promising anticancer activity in preclinical models of PC, including in abiraterone (ABI) resistant cell lines. Therefore, ELTA ± ABI was evaluated in mCRPC. Methods: This was part of a phase 1/2 study to determine the safety, preliminary efficacy, and recommended phase 2 doseof ELTA in pts with advanced cancers. Pts with mCRPC received oral ELTA once daily for 5 days per week over a 28-day cycle in 4 cohorts: single-agent (20 mg; n=7 or 30 mg; n=6) or in combination with ABI (20 mg; n=13 or 30 mg; n=4). Pts may have prior exposure to chemotherapy. Pts receiving ELTA + ABI had prior response to ABI then progressed. Response was evaluated by PCWG3 / RECIST v1.1. Results: As of 17 Sept 2018, 30 pts were treated with ELTA ± ABI with a median age of 71 and a median of 4 prior regimens; (87% ABI, 60% enzalutamide, and 57% chemotherapy). Twenty-one pts with mCRPC were evaluable for efficacy: 2 partial response (10%), 15 stable disease (71%), and 4 progressive disease (19%). The median treatment duration is 75.5 days; 4 pts still on treatment. Treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) occurring in ≥30% of the pts: fatigue (67%; 13% Gr≥3), nausea (63.3%; 0% Gr≥3), decreased appetite (57%; 0% Gr≥3), diarrhea (47%; 3% Gr≥3), weight decreased (43%; 3% Gr≥3), vomiting (37%; 7% Gr≥3), anemia (33%; 7% Gr≥3), and dysgeusia (33%; 0% Gr≥3). The 2 Gr4 TRAEs were neutropenia and elevated AST. Conclusions: ELTA± ABI is well-tolerated with AEs mostly limited to Gr 1/2 and demonstrates preliminary anti-tumor activity in patients with mCRPC. With enrollment complete, these results warrant further investigation of ELTA ± ABIin mCPRC. Clinical trial information: NCT02649790.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Lipoteichoic acid (LTA) is an important cell wall component of Gram-positive bacteria. The key enzyme responsible for polyglycerolphosphate lipoteichoic acid synthesis in the Gram-positive pathogen Staphylococcus aureus is the membrane-embedded lipoteichoic acid synthase enzyme, LtaS. It is presumed that LtaS hydrolyzes the glycerolphosphate head group of the membrane lipid phosphatidylglycerol (PG) and catalyzes the formation of the polyglycerolphosphate LTA backbone chain. Here we describe an in vitro assay for this new class of enzyme using PG with a fluorescently labeled fatty acid chain (NBD-PG) as the substrate and the recombinant soluble C-terminal enzymatic domain of LtaS (eLtaS). Thin-layer chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis of the lipid reaction products revealed that eLtaS is sufficient to cleave the glycerolphosphate head group from NBD-PG, resulting in the formation of NBD-diacylglycerol. An excess of soluble glycerolphosphate could not compete with the hydrolysis of the fluorescently labeled PG lipid substrate, in contrast to the addition of unlabeled PG. This indicates that the enzyme recognizes and binds other parts of the lipid substrate, besides the glycerolphosphate head group. Furthermore, eLtaS activity was Mn2+ ion dependent; Mg2+ and Ca2+ supported only weak enzyme activity. Addition of Zn2+ or EDTA inhibited enzyme activity even in the presence of Mn2+. The pH optimum of the enzyme was 6.5, characteristic for an enzyme that functions extracellularly. Lastly, we show that the in vitro assay can be used to study the enzyme activities of other members of the lipoteichoic acid synthase enzyme family.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is obtaining the optimal parameters of induction heating and melting systems by use of the new programs ELectro-Thermal Analysis (ELTA) 8.0 and Induction Crucible Furnace (ICF) to improve a quality of final products. Design/methodology/approach Simulation of continuous through heating prior a drawing through the draw plate is realized by an optimization procedure. Additional application of ELTA 8.0 “Heating of Wire” reveals the relationship between power, time and thermal profile of load during heating. Rational variants of ICFs for melting processes are obtained using several step-by-step iterations. Findings ELTA 8.0 program permits to optimize the continuous heating of copper, steel, titanium and other wires. ICF ELTA program was used at the initial stage of the development of new technological processes and the ICFs. This program provides a preliminary evaluation of an induction melting process and system before the use of more sophisticated 2D or 3D programs. Results of optimization allowed to find a rational decision of an induction system, the required parameters of a refractory and a power supply. Non-conductive and graphite crucibles of the furnace were compared from electrical and economical points of view. Originality/value Fast calculation of ELTA programs allows the designer to provide the required temperature distribution in a cross section and along the part to control the real-time processes of heating and melting.

Abstract:
The hypothesis explored in this paper is whether a “virtuous circle” can be established to promote English language development: providing access to interesting and comprehensible reading material, which in turn will increase reading English books, which in turn will promote English competence and in turn more reading of English books. Specifically, we seek to determine if those with more access to English books at home and through visits to bookstores show more interest in reading, and in turn are more supportive of having an English library at their school. Analysis of responses of sixth graders at four schools in Korea revealed little access to English reading material, but supported the virtuous circle hypothesis, suggesting that the path to high English competence may be easier to establish than we have imagined.

Abstract:
Speaking is important to language learners. The ability to structure talk facilitates effective communication with fellow interlocutors. A strong spoken command positions them to participate actively in interactions with their teachers and peers to hone their academic mastery. This article presents a principled approach to improve the accuracy and fluency of learners’ utterances through the teaching speaking cycle (Goh & Burns, 2012). It comprises seven strategically sequenced stages to increase learners’ knowledge of language and discourse, enhance their core skills and heighten their awareness and use of communication strategies. Based on a methodological framework underpinned by cognitive, metacognitive and socio-affective domains, the model provides for rehearsal, task repetition and focused teaching to strengthen learners’ oral competence in a holistic manner. Complementing explicit instruction with contextualized practice develops learners’ introspective awareness of the elements and processes in speaking to gain greater autonomy over their progress.

Abstract:
Professional development is an integral aspect of a teacher’s professional life. Effective professional development activities enable teachers, among others, to update and enhance their pedagogical knowledge and skills, and allow teachers to be creative and critical in their teaching approach. But the question is, to what extent the professional development activities and programmes satisfy the teachers’ needs? This nationwide study aims to determine and identify the level of the Malaysian English language teachers’ level of satisfaction of their professional development – whether English language teachers are satisfied with the professional development experiences and opportunities that are provided by the Ministry of Education and the respective State Education Departments. Schools were randomly chosen and the questionnaires were mailed to the headmasters and principals of the schools to be distributed to all English teachers. A total of 2586 (1038 secondary teachers and 1548 primary teachers) questionnaires were received from teachers all over Malaysia. This paper will highlight and discuss the main findings, and provide some critical implications and suggestions in terms of teacher education and planning and implementation of future professional development activities.

Currently, how English is being used as a lingua franca (ELF) has caused linguistic and cultural norms to be revisited in relation to language use. The issue of global citizenship has emerged when English is used as the main medium of instruction in higher education; as achieving global citizenship is a main goal of international universities, the ELF paradigm has assisted in the realization of this goal because English is used in a fluid and dynamic perspective. This paper uses interview data (N=6), which was collected from Chinese students from the Chaoshan area who obtained their master’s degrees abroad, to analyze how these students developed their senses of global citizenship. Although their ELF experiences play an important role in understanding global citizenship, many did not receive a formal education regarding global citizenship at home or abroad. This paper concludes by emphasizing how the ELF paradigm can aid higher education institutions raise people’s awareness of global citizenship.

Abstract:
Classroom-based research has flourished in the past 15 years, often introduced institutionally, as part of teachers’ Continuous Professional Development. Supporting teachers in their classroom research requires facilitation and scaffolding. Therefore, teacher trainers are often assigned the tasks of research-mentoring. However, this activity requires special skills and sustained mentoring of the mentors themselves. Mentoring, as an activity, has a rich literature, but mentoring teachers, and more specifically, mentoring language teachers researching their classrooms has not been widely documented as yet. The present self-study constitutes a reflective account of an experienced teacher trainer’s journey into mentoring. By simultaneously taking part in an online mentoring course as well as putting the newly gained knowledge into practice, the author was able to mentor 11 English language teachers and 5 English major students that came together to carry out tasks related to mentoring action research projects and / or accomplish their own classroom research as required by the Ecuadorian state university where they teach or study. The self-study draws on the first three months of the year-long program, and presents the process of growing into the mentoring role by using the author’s reflective journal, email exchanges with her lead-mentor, posts on the online EVO Mentoring course and feedback from participants. The author concludes that mentoring teacher-researchers is a two-way activity that benefits both the mentor and the mentee, but the value of mentoring should be acknowledged institutionally, and its practice extended.

Abstract:
Exploring a language learning history can help researchers, teachers, and students to reveal and understand various individual difference factors which positively or negatively influence language learning activities and strategy use. In this paper, I examined my English language learning history and delved into challenges and factors to overcome them and activate my autonomy. Based on the analysis of my learning history, three main themes were indicated: a) motivational shifts and goal-setting theory, b) learning beliefs and goal setting, and c) the relationship between learning strategy use and teachers’ influence. Furthermore, my learning history also illustrated that I tended to change all these features through both successful and unsuccessful experiences. Among them, goal-setting seems to be the most significant factor for me to study the target language. With clear learning objectives, I overcame many challenges and sustained high motivation by utilising various types of learning strategies and having positive learner beliefs. Accordingly, noticeable relationships among motivation, learner belief, and learning strategy use were revealed through my learning history log.
