Abstract:
ScienceDirect® is a registered trademark of Elsevier B.V.―an academic publishing company headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands with offices worldwide. ScienceDirect contains more than 18 million articles and chapters and >2,650 peer-reviewed journals. Multiple peer-reviewed journals from the subject categories “Oral Surgery,” “Surgery,” and “Otorhinolaryngology” are always in the field of view of the Ukrainian oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Many of those journals are published by Elsevier B.V., and for the wartime period this international publishing company gave to surgeons in Ukraine a full access to all its journals. Such opportunity is limitless useful due to the possibility to absorb international data and surgical techniques without subscriptions or payments. Russian terroristic invasion to Ukraine increased a need for Ukrainian oral and maxillofacial surgeons, trauma and plastic surgeons to manage significant number of severe ballistic and explosive trauma cases. Implementation of modern surgical principles into wartime practice is crucial for life-saving surgeries. Thus, the scientific support of Elsevier company will definitely contribute to lives` preservation and health of the Europeans.

Abstract:
Visibility of articles is a key task for any peer-reviewed journal. It makes articles to be cited more likely thus helping journals to grow and to hold higher positions in international ranking systems. Like Elsevier company running the Scopus database, the Scilit database has been launched and is managing by another academic publishing company—MDPI (Basel, Switzerland). A Scilit name is a contraction of two words—scientific and literature. As a publishing house team, we are proud to receive inclusion of the Journal of Endodontic Microsurgery to its first database. Like other respected international open access English-language journals, among top priors of our Journal are listing in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. For that purposes we will assist the editorial board of the Journal, helping to publish high quality articles in the field of endodontic microsurgery.

Abstract:
The assessment of research performance using international abstract and citation databases, or so-called global citation indexes, is currently the key criterion against which the advance of science is measured practically in all countries. In 2004 the publishing company Elsevier launched a new database – Scopus, which became a major competitor with the reputable resource Web of Science operating since 1964. Developing very successfully, Scopus has become the leading and largest abstract and citation database in the world. The indicators and data provided by Scopus are used in international university rankings and, in general, in the performance assessment of researchers, scientific schools, organizations and countries all over the world. The sources of such information are publications coming from over 150 countries, both from leading international journals and publishing houses, as well as from regional titles indexed in international databases. This paper sets out to characterize the Scopus database as a whole, along with its categories and inclusion criteria. Bulgarian Scopus publications and titles are analyzed, with the information about 48 Bulgarian journals reviewed for inclusion and included in Scopus given. The number of Bulgarian journals included in Scopus is expected to rise, provided that international publication standards and Scopus requirements are met.

Abstract:
This study involves the analysis of the scientific outputs on informal entrepreneurship (IE hereafter) over the period from 1990 to 2016. We deploy a combination of bibliometric techniques such as citations, bibliographic coupling as well as approaching the social networks established. We sourced the contents thus analyzed from the online Thomson/Reuters-ISI database and the online Scopus database run by the Elsevier Publishing Company, which returned a total of 44 and 95 publications for analysis, respectively. From among the 139 articles analyzed, the journals Entrepreneurship and Regional Development and Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship stand out as the publishers of the largest number of articles. We encounter studies on IE in developing countries as a low-income activity that contributes to the economic development of the region. The motivations and the determinants of informality are common to the majority of the scientific outputs and effectively serving as the analytical basis either for arguing in favor of the formalization of the business. Another aspect present in the literature interrelates IE with the quality of governance and economic liberalization. This analysis facet ensures IE gains in scientific profile within the ongoing context of discussions over neoliberalism and its effects on the world economy.

The article presents an overview of currently used greenhouse lighting systems. It does not apply to traditional sodium lighting systems, but only to the most modern LEDs. The publication presents descriptions of lamp designs, both foreign and Polish. The aim of the work is not only to review solutions, but also to identify the reasons for the low transfer of scientific and technical solutions to business. There are several barriers to overcome, mainly subjective ones, so that new solutions can be implemented and developed. Full Text: PDF ReferencesS. Ki-Ho, J. Yu-Min, O. Abstract:
Publishing is changing rapidly, as is the management of much of the scientific community world wide. Unfortunately there are features of both that should give considerable cause for alarm if one cares to look forward a few years. Let's begin with the remarkable consolidation of wonership in scientific publishing culminating in the latest move - the acquisition of Harcourt by Reed Elsevier- which has been investigated by the Competition Commission in the UK as being potentially against the public interest. Those who buy Reed Elsevier journals at present will know that their subscription rates are some of the highest in the world. It is not obvious that scientists will see any benefit from this takeover. Indeed, what will happen to the provision of information to working scientists as library budgets decline everywhere? Is increasingly expensive equipment for experimental use really more important than the literature? Governments will say that the Web will meet scientists needs to which my reply is that much of its content is uncontrolled rubbish and it certainly does not replace the quality controlled material available in the journals. So our first conclusion for the future could be that consolidation of ownership of journals is bad for science and unless, there is a significant change in library funding, many commercial journals are likely to price themselves out of the general market, leaving only those published by learned societies or charities at an affordable level. Bad news.

Abstract:
The study examines the newspaper company „Radikal“, which is founded in 1914 and declares bankruptcy in 1939 in the wake of WWII and the major transitions in Bulgaria during that time. The company’s final end comes in 1953. There are no studies in the journalistic literature that examine „Radikal“ in detail, so this study aims to fill this gap by tracing and evaluating the company’s activities. The study uses a chronological approach and content analysis and is based on archival sources that have not been previously used in the scientific literature, as well as on newspaper sources and other references from the journalistic and historic literature. The study concludes that „Radikal“ presents a good example of a successful party-associated newspaper publishingcompany, which is why it left a significant mark on the newspaper industry in the history of the Bulgarian Kingdom.

Copiello, Sergio. "Business as Usual with Article Processing Charges in the Transition towards OA Publishing: A Case Study Based on Elsevier." Publications 8, no. 1 (January 6, 2020): 3. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/publications8010003.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper addresses the topic of the article processing charges (APCs) that are paid when publishing articles using the open access (OA) option. Building on the Elsevier OA price list, company balance sheet figures, and ScienceDirect data, tentative answers to three questions are outlined using a Monte Carlo approach to deal with the uncertainty inherent in the inputs. The first question refers to the level of APCs from the market perspective, under the hypothesis that all the articles published in Elsevier journals exploit the OA model so that the subscription to ScienceDirect becomes worthless. The second question is how much Elsevier should charge for publishing all the articles under the OA model, assuming the profit margin reduces and adheres to the market benchmark. The third issue is how many articles would have to be accepted, in an OA-only publishing landscape, so that the publisher benefits from the same revenue and profit margin as in the recent past. The results point to high APCs, nearly twice the current level, being required to preserve the publisher’s profit margin. Otherwise, by relaxing that constraint, a downward shift of APCs can be expected so they would tend to get close to current values. Accordingly, the article acceptance rate could be likely to grow from 26–27% to about 35–55%.

The objective of the paper was to determine the preferences of academic teachers in the selection of databases of scientific publications. Material consists of the results of research carried out with the diagnostic survey methods carried out with the questionnaire technique among the scientific employees and students of the selected Polish higher schools: University of Life Sciences in Lublin, University of Agriculture in Krakow. 135 scientific employees and 140 full-time students of the second cycle studies participated in the survey. University teachers the most often used publications in scientific journals and publications in the Internet. All students that took part in the questionnaire used scientific publications in the Internet and information included in the Internet. Databases of the Polish scientific publishing houses, Elsevier database, and Google Scholar database are the most useful in the scientific work. Students search for publications only in the Polish databases of publishing houses and Google Scholar base.

Abstract:
Academic publishing is one of the most unequal areas of the circulation of ideas. Recent studies have analyzed the dominance of ISI-style standards and its consequences for scientific production in the periphery. This article delves into the Latin American publishing circuit and its performance in the midst of four different types of circuits in the world academic system: (a) mainstream ‘international’ publishing circuits, sustained by major private enterprises and publishing houses (Thomson Reuters, Elsevier, Google); (b) transnational networks and repositories built as open access (DOAJ, Dial-net, INASP) to create an alternative to previous (c) regional Southern circuits (LATINDEX, SCIELO, CLACSO, REDALYC, AJOL); and (d) national circuits based on local publications. Given that these four circuits all come into play in national scientific fields, this article addresses the case of Argentina in order to prove that these circuits are segmented, partly due to the hierarchies of the World Scientific System and partly to structural constraints and the local history of professionalization. Focusing on tenure evaluations for research positions at Argentina’s National Scientific Research Council (CONICET), the article examines the results of a survey among coordinators of the council’s evaluation committees in order to analyze the relationship between international publishing and tenure. By exploring the evaluative culture at CONICET, common trends are highlighted along with alternative forms of regional academic prestige.

The article analyzes the growth trend of scientific peer-reviewed journals in the world. It is noted that SCOPUS and Web of Science are world referral databases (without full texts) and the largest commercial projects in the field of intellectual property of Elsevier and Clarivate Analytics, which sell full texts of scientific articles. The Procedure for the formation of the list of scientific specialized publications in Ukraine is taken under consideration in details. It is concluded that the creation of unified requirements for publications in the field of law and in the field of natural and formal sciences is incorrect. The need to minimize the political influence of language policy on scientific publications is highlighted. The attention is drawn to the lack of a role of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine in the field of registration and publishing policy in relation to scientific specialized publications. The indexing of scientific publications in Ukraine, the popularity of Ukrainian legal journals in the global legal space is analyzed. In order to qualitatively improve the ratings of Ukrainian scientific peer-reviewed journals, proposals for adjusting the current regulatory legal acts are outlined.

This article draws attention to the shortcomings of modern lighting systems used in greenhouses. Its content focuses on the negative effects of mismatches between the photosynthetic needs of plants and the parameters of artificial light sources. Greenhouse lamps designers often do not have the knowledge of biological cultivation dependencies. Therefore, their cooperation with specialists of plant physiology and gardeners is indispensable. This is important because it can affect the consumer quality of vegetables. Abstract:
Abstract This article notes the ever-increasing urgency of immediate action on climate change across all sectors. The publishing industry is aware of the need for action, measurement, auditing, and detailed reporting. Two of the largest STM (scientific, technical, and medical) publishers, Springer Nature and Elsevier, have started publishing annual reports covering their activity on climate change and sustainability. The article also considers attempts that have been made to measure the carbon impact of individual books. Such studies are inconclusive, and may not be helpful if the physical product is still GHG (greenhouse gas) costly in a time when all sectors need to drastically curtail GHG impact. The paper notes the need for continuing and sustained focus on mitigation and adaptation and suggests that the prospects for highly inventive adaptation through the long-established and growing ‘digital turn’ ongoing in publishing for 60 years are encouraging. A full digital transformation may yet be possible, necessary, and able even, in effect, to subtract the GHG costs of paper publishing from the global balance sheet measuring our climate breakdown.

Abstract:
The author reveals the commercial aspects of activity of the I. Ladyzhnikov publishing company in Berlin in the first decades of the twentieth century. This paper clarifies the company’s concept and fills in a number of gaps in the study of Russian-language foreign book publishing in the first decades of the twentieth century, due to the small number of comprehensive studies in this area. Getting acquainted with Russian-language emigrant book publishing is of great interest, since it reflects the large-scale processes of the post-revolutionary breakdown of the cultural life of Russia. The source base of the research is the documents of a number of Russian archives, as well as the archive of the I. Ladyzhnikov publishing company, discovered by the author at the International Institute of Social History (IISH) in Amsterdam (Netherlands). The author introduces into scientific circulation a number of new, previously unpublished data about the I. Ladyzhnikov publishing company. The article reveals the circle of people who stood at its origins: on the one hand, these are the leaders of early Bolshevism (V.I. Lenin, L.B. Krasin, V.D. Bonch-Bruevich), on the other — the central figures of the writing group “Znanye” [Knowledge] (M. Gorky, К.P. Pyatnitsky). The author presents all the names under which the publishing company operated in different years, accurately dates the stages of its existence from the moment of its origin (5th August, 1905) to the beginning of the 1930s and proposes periodization. The archive of the publishing company preserved 40 contracts with the authors; therefore it was possible to determine the circle of writers and playwrights who collaborated with it: M. Gorky, S.S. Yushkevich, S.G. Petrov (Skitalets), A.N. Kuropatkin, S.N. Rabinovich (Sholom Aleichem), Sh. Ash and other writers. The author notes that among other tasks, the publishing house defended the copyright of Russian writers abroad. The article analyses the total annual circulation of publications, the number of authors, as well as the total annual turnover of the company. For the first time, the author considers the role and place of the “Novaya Russkaya Kniga” [New Russian Book] magazine in the activities of the I. Ladyzhnikov publishing company. The author established that the 1920s were the most successful in terms of commercial activity for the publishing company. Thus, from February to March 1924, the company “absorbed” three of the major competitors: “Helikon” publishing company, “Russian Universal Publishing Company” and “Epoch” publisher. The article presents the exact dates of the contracts for the purchase of publishers, the data on the sales value and the features of the agreements concluded. In particular, I. Ladyzhnikov company bought the publishers with the preservation of their trademarks, purchased their warehouses with commodity stocks, contracts concluded with authors, as well as debt obligations to banks. The author concludes that for almost the entire first third of the twentieth century, the I. Ladyzhnikov publishing company was the most powerful commercial enterprise among all the publishing companies of “Russian Berlin”.

Abstract:
Two 17th century institutions—learned societies and scientific journals—transformed science in ways that still dominate our professional lives today. Learned societies like the American Society for Cell Biology remain relevant because they provide forums for sharing results, discussing the practice of science, and projecting our voices to the public and the policy makers. Scientific journals still disseminate our work, but in the Internet-connected world of the 21st century, this is no longer their critical function. Journals remain relevant almost entirely because they provide a playing field for scientific and professional competition: to claim credit for a discovery, we publish it in a peer-reviewed journal; to get a job in academia or money to run a lab, we present these published papers to universities and funding agencies. Publishing is so embedded in the practice of science that whoever controls the journals controls access to the entire profession. We must reform our methods for evaluating the contributions of younger scientists and deflate the power of a small number of "elite" journals. More generally, given the recent failure of research institutions around the world to strike satisfactory deals with publishing giant Elsevier, the time has come to examine the motives and methods of those to whom we have entrusted the keys to the kingdom of science.

Abstract:
The publication of scientific journals performs a number of functions, including that of state importance, which, in turn, embrace the country image formation and determination of its place on the international arena by demonstrating the level of scientific and economic potential development of the State. Therefore, the process of publishing and studying scientific journals is an actual task. This article considers the publication of scientific journals in SB RAS in the period of 2001–2010 thereby clarifying and complementing to the picture of the regional and all-Russian scientific book publishing. The source base is representative as, based on the current archives of the Siberian enterprise “Science” RAS (printing house No. 4) and the Siberian publishing company “Nauka” of RAS, the analysis of normative-legislative documents, prepared by the Presidium of SB RAS and the Scientific-Publishing Council of SB RAS, regulating organizational and financial aspects of the Branch activities for the publication of scientific journals in the period under study, has been made. Besides, all issues of the weekly newspaper SB RAS “Science in Siberia” for the period of 2001– 2010, 24 scientific journals published by the Publishing House of SB RAS (ISO RAS), which founder was SB RAS together with institutes, as well as scientific journals published in scientific institutes and institutions of SB RAS, universities, private publishing houses have been viewed. The role of the Scientific-Publishing Council of SB RAS (INSO SB RAS) as a permanent advisory body of SB RAS Presidium, which formed and implemented into practice the strategic tasks of publishing, is presented. The discrepant role of English-language versions of journals, which, on the one hand, contribute to the entry of Russian science on the international arena and its integration into the global science, present its results to the world community, forming a positive image of the country, on the other hand, demand considerable labor and financial expenses, is disclosed. The obtained data allow revealing and characterizing the basic structural divisions of SB RAS publishing and printing base for issuing scientific journals (Publishing House of SB RAS, publishing houses of scientific centers, institutes and institutions of SB RAS, universities), and composing the list of private publishing houses, attracted by the Branch for these objectives.

Abstract:
The study of scientific book publishing, due to its enormous social and state significance, is an urgent task of modern research. This article is the first to consider the system of scientific book publishing in the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS) in the period of 2001–2010 thus determining and adding to the history of regional and Russian scientific book publishing. The purpose of the study is to present the development of the system for publishing scientific literature in the SB RAS during this period. The source base of the study is representative: these are numerous documents of the current archives of the Siberian enterprise “Nauka” RAS (Novosibirsk Printing House No. 4) and the Siberian Publishing Company “Nauka” RAS, regulatory acts of the Presidium of SB RAS, Annotated thematic plans for the release of scientific literature for 2002-2010, Publishing houses of SB RAS, materials of the weekly newspaper SB RAS “Science in Siberia” for the same period. The revealed data allow reconstructing the picture of the scientific book publishing system development in SB RAS and its thematic orientation in the first decade of the XXI century. The results obtained show that the prevailing part of published scientific literature – every third edition – during this period was on archeology, history, philology, philosophy, law.The study refined quantitative data on the release of serial publications, revealed the role of the Presidium SB RAS in developing the system of scientific book publishing, expanded the idea of cooperation between SB RAS and SIF “Nauka” RAS.The results obtained provide an opportunity to redefine and assess the evolution of their relationship during the period under review. The continuing decrease in the share of CIF in the total volume of publications of SB RAS can be interpreted as the crisis increase, but the implementation of significant and complex publishing projects speaks for a new paradigm of relations between them: mutually beneficial, effective and promising.

Abstract:
Today, the industrial world is experiencing intense competition with challenges related to environmental issues, and the domestic paper industry is no exception. This study is a follow-up of the research conducted by Palupi et al. (2015) at Company X which, through an LCA study, found an acute water ecotoxicity value of 7.16 kPt, a chronic water ecotoxicity value of 6.5 kPt, and a soil human toxicity value of 2.69 kPt. However, that study did not come with a SWOT matrix. Therefore, using a desk study, the present study aimed to map a SWOT matrix. A desk study based on SWOT analysis from 12 international journals and two national journals sourced from Elsevier, IWA Publishing, MDPI Publisher, Taylor & Francis, and Garuda was used to determine the SWOT matrix. Desk studies have the objective of comprehensively evaluating published journal articles, books, and other sources on given problem domains.Based on the results of the study, some recommendations for actions on the internal and external factors of the company are offered, consiting of steps for the company to mitigate identified weaknesses and threats. This study found that most of the pulp and paper industry engaged in internal strengths and external opportunities and faced numerous internal weaknesses and external threats. Currently, Company X occupied the first quadrant (Growth), indicating that the company was in a highly profitable condition. The company was enjoying many strengths and opportunities. Therefore, it is critical for the company to use its strengths to capture opportunities to minimize its emissions to the environment and to implement LCA in the company.

Abstract:
Urban residents make up more than half of the world’s population. They are the main resource of any modern city or town, and focus on them and their involvement are decisive factors in any successful urbanistic transformation. The purpose of the study is to summarize research in the field of environmental psychology aimed at identifying the conditions for creating psychological security for urban residents. The author made an analysis of more than 385 articles in Russian and English available in the national bibliographic database of scientific publications (Russian Science Citation Index), scientific publishing houses (Elsevier, SprigerLink, SAGE Publishing), publishing houses of open-access scientific journals (MDPI, Frontiers Media), and free digital repository of open-access full-text scientific articles (PubMed Central). Most of them dated back to the last twenty years. Of these, 80 were selected for an analysis. The facts under consideration were systematized in two aspects: objective security conditions associated with the physical environment (visual complexity, soundscape, climate, etc.) and subjective security conditions associated with the peculiarities of their perception by urban residents. To visualize the obtained conditions of the psychological security of urban residents and create an image of a safe city, the Midjourney neural network was used, which makes it possible to generate text-based images. As a result of the analysis of studies of the psychological safety of urban life, it became possible to describe the conditions that form the feeling of psychological security among urban residents; using the Midjourney neural network, to visualize the image of a safe city; to show the role of the soundscape, ordered environment, social control, segmentation of habitable space and its connection with nature; and to justify to some extent the interchangeability of security components.

Abstract:
The following paper examines some of the publishing habits observed among the winning applicants of the Bolyai János Research Scholarship. As an academic support programme, the Bolyai Research Scholarship forms a bridge between scholars with the title of doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS) and the young generation of researchers with an academic degree. The winning applicants in 2021 were researchers under the age of 45, cooperating with international co-authors, having highly cited publications and showing a continuous publication history of 15 years on average. The scholarship holders come primarily from research centres and universities. The paper argues that the achievements of scholarship holders follow the international patterns of academic excellence and publication as well as the requirements for international cooperation and publishing mainly in open access journals. In doing so, they prefer journals under the umbrella of Elsevier for performing their publication activities; however, there has been a significant increase in those publishing in MDPI journals, recently. The results show that one-third of the applicants had published before and a fifth of them had published in one of the journals of MDPI two months after announcing the list of the winning applicants. At the same time, differences in publication traditions and award systems reveal marked differences in publication strategies and evaluation criteria across fields of science. Based on this, the descriptive statistics presented in this paper contribute to our understanding of the conscious career planning of young scholars in line with international standards.

Abstract:
It is essential to establish a pattern to detect the strengths and weaknesses of working groups publishing on malaria, to promote coordination to facilitate the eradication of the disease. Given the complexity of the scientific network of groups and institutions studying malaria, it is necessary to use a mathematical algorithm that allows us to know the real structure of research on the disease in the world. In this work, articles with the word “malaria” in the title or author keywords gathered from Elsevier Scopus database were analyzed. By means of specific software, graphs were created. The analysis of the data allowed established different scientific communities, among which two were very diverse: one formed by those groups concerned about the vector transmission and control, and another one focused on the drug resistance of the parasite. Basic, applied, and operational research to eradicate malaria is an ambitious goal of the international institutions and the scientific community. The combination of effort and the establishment of a worldwide-scientific network that allows an effective interconnection (exchange) of knowledge, infrastructure technology, collaborators, financial resources, and datasets will contribute more effectively to end the disease.

Abstract:
Academic contributions on the impact of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on businesses have grown exponentially in recent years as a result of the importance of the business sector in improving the economy, society and the environment. Through the use of bibliometric methods and taking the Web of Science (WoS) as a reference database, the research aims to analyze the structure of scientific knowledge of the link between the SDGs and the corporate sector, analyzing 2366 documents published between 1992 and 2022. The results show, among other aspects, the accelerated growth rate of the scientific production analyzed since 2015, the use of publications in articles as the main format for disseminating research results, the relevance of the category of Environmental Sciences as the area of study in which most of the scientific production analyzed falls as well as the predominant role of the publishing houses MDPI, Elsevier and Emerald in the publication of scientific documents on the topic under analysis. The research can therefore be of use to both neophyte and experienced researchers who wish to deepen their understanding of the academic knowledge structure of the SDGs in the business world.

Abstract:
With the establishment of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), in 1964 in Philadelphia, the USA, Eugene Garfield introduced the citation indexing of the scientific literature, and his idea proposed in 1955 was realized by publishing the Science Citation Index (SCI). Corrected number of citations (iC), total number of citations the publication received divided by the number of authors, may solve the ongoing crisis of both citatometry and scientometrics. It should be done by Clarivate, the company that continues work of the ISI.
