Abstract:
ABSTRACTObjective: to describe the network of social support for the breast feeding of preterm newly-born infant discharged from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Method: this is a descriptive research, with a qualitative approach, carried out after the approval by the Research Ethics Committee of SMS/RJ, under the Protocol 90/08, within the period from July to August 2008, through a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview with thirty mothers who attended to the follow-up of their preterm children, in a municipal maternity in Rio de Janeiro, and breastfed or expressed milk during hospitalization for more than seven days. The data analysis was based on Ingrid Elsen’s theory. Results: the interviews were grouped into the five attributes of Ingrid Elsen’s theory: 1) the presence; 2) the promotion of life and well-being; 3) the protection; 4) the inclusion; and 5) the orientation to life. Conclusion: it was found that the social support network in the process of breast feeding of the premature infant was the family, with great emphasis also to the nursing staff, which share the responsibility for the establishment of breast feeding in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and for the encouragement of exclusive breast feeding at home. Abstract:
Thomson et al. (1997) proposed that the extant Elseya from the Nicholson-Gregory drainages in northwestern Queensland was conspecific with the holotype of Elseya lavarackorum, which comprised a fossil carapace and associated plastron excavated from the late Pleistocene Terrace Site at Riversleigh. Analysis of additional fossil material, and examination of a suite of 16 scute characters (eight for each of the carapace and plastron) by Joseph-Ouni et al. (2020) concluded that the two species were distinct and represented separate Elseya lineages and proposed the new name Elseya oneiros for the extant lineage. Recently, the Turtle Taxonomy Working Group (TTWG) in their 9th edition Checklist of Turtles of the World (TTWG 2021) questioned the status of E. oneiros and placed it in the synonymy of E. lavarackorum, making the claim, amongst others, that the skeletal characters of Thomson et al. (1997) were not addressed. Here we fully address the claims made and evaluate those skeletal characters. We also assess an additional nine thoracic skeletal characters of the pertinent Elseya species, including E. dentata sensu stricto. The results again do not support the conclusions of Thomson et al. (1997) of the holotype of Elseya lavarackorum being conspecific with the extant Elseya from the Nicholson-Gregory Rivers, reaffirms the proposal offered by Joseph-Ouni et al. (2020) for the placement of E. lavarackorum in the subgenus Elseya, and the status of E. oneiros in the Nicholson-Gregory drainages as a distinct species.

Abstract:
The Burnett River snapping turtle (Elseya sp.) from the Burnett, Mary and Fitzroy river systems is an undescribed Australian freshwater turtle, of which very little ecological information is known. This paper describes the dietary ecology of the species in the Burnett River catchment. Stomach and faecal samples were collected from turtles and an index of relative importance was used to rank food items found in stomach samples. This index indicated that algae and aquatic ribbon weed (Vallisneria) were the dominant food items consumed. No difference in diet was found between males and females. Although the sample size was small, diet appeared to vary slightly seasonally, with Elseya sp. selectively feeding on the flower buds of the Chinese elm tree (Celtis chinensis) and the seeds of the blackbean tree (Castanospermum australe) when these food items were seasonally available. Faecal samples suggest that the most ingested foods (algae and aquatic ribbon weed) were also the most digestible. Although predominantly herbivorous, Elseya sp. was seen to eat carrion once in the wild.

Full text
Abstract:
Allozyme electrophoresis was used to explore relationships among the Australian Chelidae in order to test the currently accepted phylogeny and to determine the affinities of several distinctive but undescribed species. The data set was comprehensive, being based on 54 loci for turtles from 76 populations of 22 species (excluding Pseudemydura umbrina and Chelodina novaeguineae). Analysis by both phenetic and phylogenetic methods revealed that the genus Elseya, as currently recognised, is paraphyletic. The closest common ancestor to species of Elseya has Emydura (and possibly Rheodytes) among its living descendants. Five clades among the short-necked taxa were considered distinctive enough to warrant recognition at the generic level, namely (1) Emydura, (2) Elseya (to include only El. novaeguineae, El. dentata and three related but undescribed taxa), (3) Rheodytes, (4) the El. latisternum group (to include El. latisternum and three related but undescribed taxa), and (5) 'short-necked alpha', an undescribed species with no clear affinities. Levels of divergence among these generic groups were similar to levels of divergence among genera of cryptodiran turtles. A phylogeny for the Australian Chelidae, incorporating the results of the allozyme analyses, is presented. Further work is required to firmly establish the affinities of Rheodytes and 'short-necked alpha' in a phylogeny for the Australian chelid turtles.

Abstract:
Abstract— At a time when Mongolia is heavily affected by desertification and is the focus of global attention, the use of sand, especially manganese sand, for tourism may be the most effective way to combat desertification. Environmental protection is one of the most pressing issues in the “Elsen tasarkhai” region, and tourism (especially creative tourism) is seen as a source of revenue to mitigate this. Local people support tourism development, but lack of experience and organization is a disadvantage. The residents of "Elsen Tasarkhai" need professional training, counseling, and cooperation with the community and the protection administration to conduct tourism activities. The survey was conducted in June, July and August 2020 using a questionnaire with 17 questions covering 24 households in the Elsen Tasarkhai area. According to a survey of local households, it is important to support the use of sand for tourism, create local brand souvenirs, establish herder communities and start working in 2022. In order to develop community-based tourism in the vicinity of "Elsen Tasarkhai", it is necessary to develop "Sand sports, arts and culture tourism" regionally based on regional specifics.

Abstract:
The Chelidae is a family of side-necked turtles restricted in distribution to South America and Australasia. While their biology in Australia is reasonably well known, species in New Guinea are very poorly known despite high diversity, especially in the southern lowlands. In this paper, we report on the diversity, distribution, habitat and reproductive biology of the freshwater turtles of the TransFly region of the Western Province of Papua New Guinea, with special emphasis on reproduction of Emydura subglobosa, Elseya branderhorsti and Elseya novaeguineae. Seven species were captured, with reliable records of an eighth. A key to the freshwater turtles of the TransFly region is provided. Harvest methods, consumption, and trade in turtles by the TransFly communities are documented. There is mounting pressure to take advantage of revenue opportunities afforded by the Asian turtle trade, but this is impeded by lack of transport infrastructure. There is also insufficient demographic information on any New Guinean turtle species to make a reasoned judgment on the level of harvest that would be sustainable. Nor is there sufficient information on captive rearing for most species, and where it is available it is not accessible by local villagers. These knowledge gaps need to be addressed and factored into a management plan that is implemented before local communities can capitalise on the commercial opportunities provided by the turtle fauna without risking collapse of the resource and the implications for their concurrent subsistence economy that would follow.

Abstract:
Genetic parentage studies can provide detailed insights into the mating system dynamics of wild populations, including the prevalence and patterns of multiple paternity. Multiple paternity is assumed to be common among turtles, though its prevalence varies widely between species and populations. Several important groups remain to be investigated, including the family Chelidae, which dominate the freshwater turtle fauna of the Southern Hemisphere. We used seven polymorphic microsatellite markers to investigate the presence of multiple fathers within clutches from the white-throated snapping turtle (Elseya albagula), an Australian species of conservation concern. We uncovered a high incidence of multiple paternity, with 83% of clutches showing evidence of multiple fathers and up to three males contributing to single clutches. We confirm a largely promiscuous mating system for this species in the Burnett River, Queensland, although a lone incidence of single paternity indicates it is not the only strategy employed. These data provide the first example of multiple paternity in the Chelidae and extend our knowledge of the taxonomic breadth of multiple paternity in turtles of the Southern Hemisphere.

Full text
Abstract:
Context Resource partitioning of diet and microhabitat was examined for five sympatric species of freshwater turtles in the Daly River in the northern end of Northern Territory (Top End) in Australia. The Daly River supports a high diversity of freshwater turtles, making it the ideal place to study a freshwater turtle community. Aims To determine the dry-season diet and microhabitat use of Carettochelys insculpta, Elseya dentata, Chelodina oblonga, Emydura victoriae and Emydura subglobosa worrelli and examine intraspecific and interspecific niche overlap and ontogenetic dietary shift. Methods Gut contents were collected by stomach flushing, and microhabitat use was determined by recording where each turtle was first seen before capture. Diet and microhabitat use were compared using an index of relative importance. Niche overlap was measured with Horn’s overlap index. Key results Carettochelys insculpta is an opportunistic omnivore that feeds mostly on ribbonweed (Vallisneria spiralis) and aquatic snails. Elseya dentata is herbivorous, feeding primarily on aquatic algae. The diets of C. insculpta and E. dentata overlapped moderately, but the overall niche overlap was low because they occupied different microhabitats within the river. Chelodina oblonga fed very little, and may use the Daly River as a dry-season refuge. Emydura victoriae is molluscivorous, consuming more molluscs as it grows. This ontogenetic dietary shift was associated with megacephaly (extreme broadly expanded head that is too large to fit into the carapace) and expanded triturating surfaces. This specialisation allows adult E. victoriae to feed exclusively on molluscs and so their diet overlapped little with other species. Emydura subglobosa worrelli was omnivorous, consuming mostly freshwater sponge and apparently preferring more lentic water. Conclusions The freshwater turtles of the wet–dry tropics are usually reported as being heavily reliant on the seeds, fruits and leaves of riparian vegetation; however, the present study showed that the dry-season diet in perennial rivers is primarily of aquatic origin. Implications The study suggested that populations of C. insculpta, E. dentata and E. victoriae could be threatened by broad-scale development in northern Australia if there were substantive impacts on aquatic macrophytes and molluscs in the Daly River system.

Abstract:
Aim: To evaluate the surface micro hardness of enamel following use of ElsenzTM and GC tooth mousse. Methods: Twenty extracted anterior teeth were included for the study. Teeth were decoronated and mounted mesiodistally. Baseline values of the samples were recorded and teeth were randomly divided into 2 groups. Group A: ElsenzTM; Group B: GC tooth mousse. Samples were demineralized with Mc Innes solution (2 cycles, 5 minutes daily with 24-hour gap each) following which remineralization was done for 2 weeks (2 cycles, 5 minutes daily with 7 days gap) and the samples were subjected to micro hardness testing using Vickers hardness tester. The results obtained were subjected to statistical analysis using one way ANOVA and paired t test. Results: GC tooth mousse and ElsenzTM both showed remineralization of enamel, although when statistically compared, there was no significant difference in the micro hardness values in both the groups. Conclusion: Periodic application of ElsenzTM increases micro hardness of enamel and it can be effectively used as remineralizing agent.

Abstract:
Trypanosome infections are often difficult to detect by conventional microscopy and their pleomorphy often confounds differential diagnosis. Molecular techniques are now being used to diagnose infections and to determine phylogenetic relationships between species. Complete small subunit rRNA gene sequences were determined for isolates of Trypanosoma chelodina from the Brisbane River tortoise (Emydura signata), the saw-shelled tortoise (Elseya latisternum), and the eastern snake-necked tortoise (Chelodina longicollis) from southeast Queensland, Australia. Partial sequence data were also obtained for T. binneyi from a platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) from Tasmania. Phylogenetic relationships between T. chelodina, T. binneyi and other species were examined by maximum parsimony and likelihood methods. The Australian tortoise and platypus trypanosomes did not exhibit any close phylogenetic relationships with those of mammals, reptiles or amphibians, but were closely related to each other, and to fish trypanosomes. This contra-indicates their co-evolution with their vertebrate hosts but does not exclude co-evolution with different groups of invertebrate vectors, notably insects and leeches.

Full text
Abstract:
This study monitored natural nest temperatures and examined the effect of incubation temperature on hatchling phenotype of the freshwater turtle Elseya albagula to determine the optimal temperature for a potential head-start program. Eggs were incubated at constant temperatures (26°C, 28°C and 30°C) to determine the influence of temperature on incubation period, hatchling morphology, swimming performance and post-hatching growth rate. Hatchlings incubated at 26°C had longer plastrons than hatchlings from 30°C and swam faster, three days after hatching, than did hatchlings incubated at either 28°C or 30°C. Incubation temperature also provided a source of variation in hatchling scute patterns. Clutch of origin influenced hatchling mass and size, growth at 184 days after hatching, and the swimming performance of 3-day and 75-day post-hatch hatchlings. Constant temperatures of 26°C and 28°C produced the highest hatching success and highest-quality hatchlings and are therefore recommended for incubation of eggs in a head-start program. In the field, unshaded nests experienced greater daily fluctuations in temperature and higher temperatures overall compared with shaded nests, such that unshaded nest temperatures approached the upper thermal limit to development.

Abstract:
Here, we introduce the idea of probabilities of line origins for alleles in general pedigrees as found in crosses between outbred lines. We also present software for calculating these probabilities. The proposed algorithm is based on the linear regression method of Haley, Knott and Elsen (1994) combined with the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method for estimating quantitative trait locus coefficients used as regressors. We compared the relative precision of our method and the original method as proposed by Haley et al. (1994). The scenarios studied varied in the allelic distribution of marker alleles in parental lines and in the frequency of missing marker genotypes. We found that the MCMC method achieves a higher accuracy in all scenarios considered. The benefits of using MCMC approximation are substantial if the frequency of missing marker data is high or the number of marker alleles is low and the allelic frequency distribution is similar in both parental lines.

Abstract:
Monte Carlo simulations can quantify various types of DNA damage to evaluate the biological effects of ionizing radiation at the nanometer scale. This work presents a study simulating the DNA target response after proton irradiation. A chromatin fiber model and new physics constructors with the ELastic Scattering of Electrons and Positrons by neutral Atoms (ELSEPA) model were used to describe the DNA geometry and the physical stage of water radiolysis with the Geant4-DNA toolkit, respectively. Three key parameters (the energy threshold model for strand breaks, the physics model and the maximum distance to distinguish DSB clusters) of scoring DNA damage were studied to investigate the impact on the uncertainties of DNA damage. On the basis of comparison of our results with experimental data and published findings, we were able to accurately predict the yield of various types of DNA damage. Our results indicated that the difference in physics constructor can cause up to 56.4% in the DNA double-strand break (DSB) yields. The DSB yields were quite sensitive to the energy threshold for strand breaks (SB) and the maximum distance to classify the DSB clusters, which were even more than 100 times and four times than the default configurations, respectively.

Marine and Freshwater Research 67, no. 4 (2016): 505. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/mf14117.

Full text
Abstract:
Increased suspended-sediment concentrations (SS) in rivers can affect aquatic respiration in riverine fauna by impairing respiratory function. Bimodally respiring freshwater turtles are likely to be sensitive to changes in SS because increased concentrations may affect their ability to aquatically respire. However, the impact of SS on the diving behaviour of bimodally respiring freshwater turtles has not been formally investigated. To test this, we examined the influence of dissolved oxygen (DO) saturation (25%, 100%) and temperature (17°C, 25°C) on the diving behaviour of Elseya irwini under clear (0mgL–1) and turbid (79mgL–1) conditions. We hypothesised that low temperature and high DO % saturation would increase dive duration and that high SS would negate the effect of DO, decreasing dive duration under highly oxygenated conditions. Our data demonstrated that increased SS significantly reduced mean dive duration by 73% (97.4±10.1min in 0mgL–1 trials v. 26.4±3.2min in 79mgL–1 trials) under conditions of low temperature (17°C) and high DO % saturation (100%) only. Increased SS directly affects the utilisation of DO by this species, so as to extend submergence times (aquatic respiration) under optimal conditions, raising concerns about the effect of SS on the persistence of populations of physiologically specialised freshwater turtles.

Abstract:
A survey of the Kikori River drainage of the Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea identified four species of freshwater turtle. The pig-nosed turtle Carettochelys insculpta and the southern New Guinea soft-shelled turtle Pelochelys bibroni are riverine species. The New Guinea spotted turtle Elseya novaeguineae lives primarily in the tidal freshwater creeks and streams, flooded sinkholes and swamps of the lowland rainforest. The New Guinea painted turtle Emydura subglobosa resides almost exclusively in forest sinkholes and swamps. Pelochelys bibroni was the least-common species, and is probably locally endangered. Greatest turtle diversity occurred in the Karst Plains of the Kikori sub-basin, where there is a greater diversity of habitat available to turtles. Lowest diversity occurred in the highlands, where turtles were present in very low density as introduced populations, brought in from the Kikori lowlands, Mount Bosavi and the Western Province by visiting relatives. Linguistic diversity concurred with turtle diversity of the regions in which the languages were spoken. C. insculpta nests both on riverine sand beaches and on coastal beaches, sand spits and isolated sand bars where the Kikori River discharges into the Gulf of Papua. Adult females and eggs of C. insculpta are harvested heavily by local people for local consumption.
