Sonne, Joel. "The role of tourism in poverty reduction in Elmina, Ghana." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/134954.

Full text
Abstract:
Governments and donor agencies are increasingly advocating tourism as a viable poverty reduction option in developing countries. However, the debate surrounding tourism development mechanisms and benefits to local people is based upon limited empirical evidence. Much of the literature has focused on the socio-economic impacts of tourism in developing countries, but there is comparatively limited investment of the relationship between tourism and poverty reduction from the perspectives of the stakeholders, particularly local people. To build knowledge about this relationship, this research study examines the role of tourism in poverty reduction in Elmina, Ghana. The core aim of the research is to analyse the inter-relationship between poverty reduction and tourism from the perspective of local people and stakeholders. The research focuses upon the importance of tourism as a developmental strategy to tackle poverty. The research methodology was formulated within an interpretive paradigm utilising qualitative techniques to investigate tourism and poverty in Elmina. Stakeholders who participated in the study included: Government; Donor Agencies; Local People; Tourists; and the Private Sector. The data was analysed using thematic data analysis methods. Researcher reflexivity is also integrated into the study in view of the researcher’s experience of employment in a public sector tourism organisation in Ghana. The thematic findings contribute to knowledge about the relationship between tourism and poverty reduction in Elmina and are categorised into three main themes. Firstly, local people in Elmina define and understand poverty and tourism opportunities in multiple ways, which differ from other stakeholders; however, differences in meanings and understandings exist between and within individuals and groups in Elmina. The attributes accounting for the differences in views include: level of education; access to the tourism market; participation in decision-making; and type of businesses. Secondly, local people participate in tourism mainly as owners of informal tourism businesses and employees. ii However, a group of marginalised people, the ‘Castle Boys’, also benefit from the support received from philanthropic tourists through the activities of begging and informal tour guiding as ways of earning income to escape from poverty. Finally, several barriers to participation for local people in tourism exist in the Elmina community, which marginalises and excludes a cross-section of the locals from the advantages of socio-economic opportunities. These barriers include: a low level of education attainment; a lack of availability of and access to credit facilities; and a lack of ‘voice’ in the decision-making process, indicating a general need for capacity building. Government and donor agencies’ neoliberal policy objectives of utilising cultural tourism for development has failed to achieve poverty reduction in Elmina. This issue has given rise to evolving questions of the use of tourism as a developmental tool to reduce poverty and how to empower local people to actively participate in emerging socio-economic opportunities. This research subsequently contributes to furthering the understanding of the role of tourism in poverty reduction, and theoretically comprehending the role of tourism as a development strategy to combat poverty in local communities.

Adu-Ampong, Emmanuel Akwasi. "Governing tourism-led local economic development planning : an interactive tourism governance perspective on the Elmina 2015 Strategy in Ghana." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/16815/.

Full text
Abstract:
Tourism is expanding in many developing countries, in contexts where states struggle to effectively manage local economic development processes. This thesis aims to bridge a gap between the literature on the tourism-poverty nexus and scholarship pertaining to the politics and governance of local development planning, by examining how governing interactions shape the planning and use of tourism for local economic development and poverty reduction. A key contribution of this thesis is the development of an interactive tourism governance framework built on the three key concepts of stakeholder governance capacity, institutional thickness and political cycles. The research is framed as an embedded case study of the Elmina 2015 Strategy in Ghana. A mainly qualitative research approach was adopted involving interviews, observations and documentary analysis. The Elmina 2015 Strategy sought to leverage tourism as a catalyst for local economic development and poverty reduction through an integrated planning approach led by the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Municipal Assembly (KEEA). The thesis identified that the Elmina 2015 Strategy was insufficiently embedded within existing institutional structures. Through a process-tracing analysis, it was found that cycles of national elections and local government politics resulted in the loss of institutional memory and knowledge at the KEEA. This constrained the governing capacity of the KEEA in steering project implementation. This thesis shows that the state and the internal power dynamics between key players within it remain crucial in setting and implementing policy agendas. The thesis therefore seeks to make a contribution towards debates on the significance of the state in tourism governance and argues that the state ought to be brought back into any conceptualisation of tourism governance, especially as it relates to the governing of tourism-led local economic development. As local governments take a more active role in tourism development planning, the issue of their capacity needs to be addressed.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the interaction between the Union Prison System led by William Hoffman and the Confederate prisoners-of-war, specifically those held at Elmira, New York. By focusing on Hoffman's actions and decisions in the last year of the war, the Confederate death toll can be better understood. The treatise relies heavily on The War Of The Rebellion: A Compilation Of The Official Records Of The Union And Confederate Armies. Two studies were indispensable for this study: Hesseltine's Civil War Prisons: A Study In War Psychology, and Leslie's Hunter's Ph.D. Disseration, Warden For The Union: William Hoffman (1807-1884). The conclusions of my research are: (A) William Hoffman developed a change in actions in 1864, and (B) these actions continued in the last year of the war. As a result of his actions and other factors, Elmira had the highest percentage of death of any Union prison camp. Hoffman's actions led to a higher death rate of Confederate prisoners than has been previously recognized.

Abstract

Background Trade fairs have existed for a very long time but it is still one of the most popular marketing activities performed by companies. One big problem that has faced exhibiting companies for a long time is that it is hard to evaluate what value the trade fairs can bring to the exhibiting company. In rough economical times it is easy for the top management in a company to cut in the trade fair budget since commonly they do not have any numbers providing the benefits of exhibiting. Jönköping is a region where many subcontracting companies are located and it is also seen as a central place in Sweden by many companies since it is ‘close’ to everything. The subcontracting companies do not have any own products but instead make them in close collaboration with their customers. Therefore the meeting with customers is of great importance and the fair is an important medium for meeting with the industry.

Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to investigate what value the trade fairs bring to the exhibiting subcontracting companies in the Jönköping region.

Method The method that has been used in this thesis is qualitative with deep interviews with eight companies exhibiting at Elmia Subcontractors. This was done in order to gather data from many companies with different views and perspectives of what value is and what value that trade fairs can bring to their companies. The study is of descriptive character since this is corresponding to the qualitative method used.

Result The value that the companies receive from the trade fair participation can be summed up in the word quality in the sense of the qualitative meeting, the message, the experience, the image of being economically stable and trust-worthy, to strengthen contacts, to strengthen the brand, internal and financial value, the value in seeing new possibilities, to present new brands and to meet new target groups. In order to ease an evaluation of the fair, the exhibitors should set more short term goals that are easier to measure and that are easier to connect only to the fair.

Truter, Elmien. "Language interpreting during the forensic interview : a social work investigation / Elmien Truter." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4941.

Full text
Abstract:
The sexual abuse of children in South–Africa, and across the world, is becoming a daily phenomenon. Such abuse of children takes place in every class, culture and race. Forensic social workers are appointed for sexual abuse cases to assess the alleged victims of sexual abuse in order to determine the likelihood that sexual abuse actually took place. The problem in South–Africa is two–fold: first, only a few social workers are qualified forensic social workers and second, most of the forensic social workers in South–Africa are white females who cannot speak or understand all the 11 official languages of South–Africa. Yet the children who are victims of sexual abuse come from cultures and races where these 11 languages are spoken. This then raises the problem of the language barrier between the forensic social worker and the alleged victim of sexual abuse. The appointment of language interpreters for forensic interviews is evidently the only way to overcome the language barrier. There is a great need for language interpreters as their role is crucial to the forensic process. However, many forensic social workers have experienced serious problems with language interpreters during the forensic interviews and have remarked that the mere presence and behaviour of the language interpreter is often so detrimental to the forensic assessment that they prefer to do without them. The problem of the language barrier remains, however, and the problems of the appointment of the language interpreters have to be addressed to enable forensic social workers to conduct forensic assessments successfully and thereby assist in ensuring justice in such criminal cases. The researcher in this study believes that the communication barrier that exists between the forensic social worker, the alleged victim of sexual abuse and the language interpreter is a crucial issue that requires immediate attention to ensure effective service delivery in the judicial system of South–Africa. The article format was selected in accordance with Regulation A.11.2.5 for a Master’s degree in (Social Work in Forensic Practice). The article complies with the requirements of the Journal CARSA.

The Municipality of Presidente Figueiredo is known by its exuberant streams, that are an important touristical attractive and home of a rich fauna of aquatic insects. Elmidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) is an abundant family in Presidente Figueiredo streams, due to their need to inhabit lotic and non-impacted environments. Despite of that, until now, any study concerning the Elmidae community from Presidente Figueiredo had been done. The aim of this study was to inventory the taxa, describe new species and prepare taxonomic keys for genus level of Presidente Figueiredo’s Elmidae. The study was based upon material collected from eight localities. Were foud 17 genera and 38 species, 10 of them were new species (Heterelmis browni sp. nov., Hexacylloepus hintoni sp. nov., Neoelmis variecarinata sp. nov., Pilielmis figueirensis sp. nov., Portelmis paulicruzi sp. nov., Stegoelmis figueirensis sp. nov., Stenhelmoides longifibulus sp. nov., Stenhelmoides pilitarsus sp. nov., Stenhelmoides spangleri sp. nov. and Stenhelmoides spinipenis sp. nov.). Separete taxonomic keys were made for larvae and adults. The genus Portelmis Sanderson, 1953 was registered for the first time for Brazil. Hexacylloepus Hinton, 1940 was registered for the first time for the Amazonas. Six of the 28 known species were registered for the first time for Brasil (Gyrelmis obesa Hinton, 1940, Hexacylloepus heterelmoides Hinton, 1939, Hintonelmis delevei Hinton, 1971, Neoelmis opis Hinton, 1972, Stegoelmis stictoides Spangler, 1990 and Stenhelmoides bebei Spangler e Perkins, 1989) and five registered for the first time for the Amazonas (Gyrelmis maculata Hinton, 1940, Gyrelmis nublia Hinton, 1940, Neoelmis thyas Hinton, 1972, Pilielmis halia Hinton, 1971 and Xenelmis granata (Grouvelle, 1888). Also, the male of Neoelmis thyas Hinton, 1972 was described for the first time.

Truter, Elmien. "South African social workers at risk : exploring pathways to their resilience / Elmien Truter." Thesis, North-West University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/10645.

Full text
Abstract:
Social workers worldwide play a pivotal role in delivering social services to those in need of such services. Designated social workers (DSWs) deliver statutory services pertaining to the protection of children in need of care and protection. All social workers are confronted by several professional risk factors that jeopardise their well-being; yet risks specifically observed in DSWs support the plea to enhance their resilience. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological inquiry was to explore pathways of resilience among resilient South African DSWs by studying relevant literature and examining South African DSWs’ lived experiences. A secondary purpose was to draw on these experiences and literature to develop guidelines for South African DSW supervisors who may encourage the promotion of DSW resilience. Conducting a qualitative research synthesis was the first step and resulted in the confirmation of social worker risk and a deficient understanding of South African DSW resilience. An advisory panel of social work, DSW, and resilience experts assembled and formulated indicators of resilience in resilient South African DSWs, namely: a value-embedded life, having a support network, and having personal strengths, which, next, facilitated the identification of 15 resilient South African DSWs through snowball sampling. These 15 DSWs wrote narratives and were interviewed through semi-structured interviews in order to explore their lived experiences of workplace risks and their resilience processes. The findings concluded that these DSWs adapted to workplace adversities by living a purpose- and practice-informing creed, enjoying supportive collaborations, engaging in constructive transactions, and accentuating the positive. Guidelines for South African DSW supervisors, which emerged from these findings and literature, were proposed to be framed by reflective supervision as a step towards promoting South African DSW resilience.

Abstract:
Strongylosis in equids, despite being very common, have never been studied from a strictly ecological point of view. Mathematical models are important ecological tools used to study the temporal dynamics of parasite populations, and are useful to study the effect of different biological parameters, as well as to analyse the outcome produced by perturbations such as anthelmintic treatments. This work describes the study of the temporal dynamics of strongyles infection in an organic donkey population, performed using coprological quantitative analysis and donkeys’ age as a proxy of the time of infection. Force of infection was then estimated for Strongylus vulgaris and small strongyles and the results used as the basis for the development of mathematical models. In particular, the comparison of models output and field data made it possible to estimate the transmission coefficient  and to consequently calculate the basic reproduction number R0 and the threshold host density. Small strongyles model includes hypobiosis and, more interestingly as never found in literature, a density-dependent development rate of hypobiotic larvae in adult parasites in order to simulate a negative feedback between larvae emergence from hypobiosis and adult parasite abundance. Simulations of pharmacological and environmental treatments showed that parasite eradication was possible for S. vulgaris only, while small strongyles, due to hypobiosis and density-dependent development rate of their hypobiotic larvae, are very difficult to control and impossible to eradicate. In addition, density-dependence in larval development has been demonstrated to act as a key factor in improving parasite population survival and abundance even in absence of human intervention.

Abstract:
The demand for forensic social work as a specialist field is increasing rapidly, due to the increasing moral decline of the community and consequent higher demands set to generic social workers. Amendments to existing acts as well as the development of new legislation, lead to more opportunity for the prosecution of the perpetrator, and therefore a higher utilization of the forensic social worker. A need was experienced to do research regarding the gaps experienced by social workers or any other workers who are currently executing forensic assessments with the sexually traumatised child. The aim of the investigation was to determine which gaps social workers experience in the field when assessing a child forensically. A recording procedure was used to obtain qualitative as well as quantitative data. A purposive sampling was used were interviews were held with five participants to obtain the data. A selfdeveloped questionnaire was used as measuring instrument. It is clear from the findings that there are definite gaps within the field of forensic social work and the need of further research within the field of forensic social work in South Africa is highlighted.

CAPES
O primeiro grupo apresenta larvas menores predominando no verão e adultos no inverno. O segundo grupo apresenta adultos predominando no verão e larvas menores no inverno.
ln a study carried out on Elmidae in a first order stream at Tijuca Forest, Rio de Janeiro, RJ (Brazil), samples were taken from four substrate types: litter from pools, hard rocks, sand and litter from riffles. A total of 1542 individuals, being 246 adults and 1296 larvae, of 7 species: Austrolimnius laevigatus (Grouvelle, 1889), Cylloepus sp., Gonielmis sp., Heterelmis sp., Macrelmis sp., Neoelmis sp. and Phanocerus clavicornis Sharp, 1882. All taxa were redescribed. Pertinent characters for recognition of the various taxa are illustrated. Litter from riffles showed the highest abundance per substrate and winter presented the highest abundances among seasons. Gonielmis is for the first time reported to Brazil. Based on the biomass of the most abundant species, two life cycle patterns were found. Heterelmis sp. presented smaller larvae predominating in summer and later instars appearing in winter. On the other hand, Phanocerus clavicornis presented the later instars appearing in summer and smaller larvae in winter. Apparently the main environmental variables affecting Elmidae spatial and temporal distribution were temperature and water level.

Abstract:

The present thesis was drafted to broaden knowledge on Coleoptera, with an emphasis on the family Elmidae, in aquatic systems in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The thesis is divided in four chapters: 1) inventory of aquatic Coleoptera fauna (larvae and adults) in two mountainous regions of the Atlantic Forest in the state of São Paulo, particularly in the Serra da Mantiqueira and Serra do Mar; 2) a taxonomic key for the identification of larvae of genera of Elmidae in the state of São Paulo, with records of new occurrences and their distribution; 3) the use of mesohabitats by Elmidae larvae and adult in forest streams; and 4) checklist of the Elmidae (Coleoptera: Byrrhoidea) of Brazil. Different locations in the state of São Paulo were selected, with the sampling in the Campos do Jordão State Park intensified to achieve the objectives. The collections were performed with the aid of a Surber sampler and complementary methods were used to achieve a broader-scoped survey. The results indicate that: 1) aquatic systems in mountainous regions studied have a huge diversity of Coleoptera, which underscores the importance of preservation and conservation programs in these areas; 2) genera of Elmidae are widely distributed in different regions of the state, with the distribution of some species is restricted to certain regions; 3) the high indicator value observed for genera of Elmidae indicates a high degree of specificity to related mesohabitats and both larvae and adults of the same genus of Elmidae occupy the same mesohabitats in streams; and 4) A total of 148 species named plus 1 unnamed species of Elmidae are cited for Brazil. The results of the present study contribute knowledge on Coleoptera fauna in aquatic systems in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, and can be used in biodiversity monitoring and conservation programs.

Ryke, Elma. "The social niche of farm dwellers : a social work strengths approach / Elizabeth Hermina (Elma) Ryke." Thesis, North-West University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/224.

Full text
Abstract:
Farm dwellers in the North West Province have been identified as an extremely vulnerable group. in terms of physical, physiological and mental health. Therefore the North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus (Focus Area 9.1) launched the FLAGH study with the broad aim of gaining reliable information on the reasons for and contributing factors to their poor health status, which could be used to design appropriate intervention programmes. The research formed part of this multidisciplinary study and focused on farm dwellers' experience of the farm as the environment in which they live and work. While a great deal is already known about the psychological strengths of people that protect them against psychological malfunctioning, far less is known about environmental elements protecting people against adversity. From a social work perspective it is a long-cherished conviction that individual outcomes are the results of a transactional process between personal and environmental influences. However, it is also a conviction that is often not reflected in social work practice. Strength-based assessment models are, for example, overwhelmingly concerned with individual human factors, while practice guidelines and specific practice knowledge about environmental factors are lagging behind. This situation consequently pointed to the need for further theoretical and empirical research. The concept of social niche was identified as a possible framework for organising strengths and risks as experienced by a specific group within a specific context (in this case people living on farms). Against this background a research need was identified to develop an approach to assess environmental strengths and risks. This was done by means of a literature study and an empirical investigation. The strengths perspective and the concept of social niche are described and evaluated as a paradigm and theoretical construct (or perspective) for developing an approach to assess environmental strengths and risks. It is concluded that, from the strengths perspective, an environment can be considered strong when it consists of human beings who are connected to their innate strengths and capacity for healing, where there is community, membership, mutuality and connection among people and the environment, and people who experience the environment as strong and contribute to creating a strong environment. From the social niche perspective, an optimal niche refers to conditions and resources that would enable people to function at the best possible level, while a realised niche refers to the more limited spectrum of conditions and resources which allows people to survive. These niche types have enabling and entrapping elements to a greater or lesser degree. It was found that the social niche concept does provide a theoretical approach to assessing the environment in terms of strengths and risks and gives better insight into the result of the transactional process between person and environment. It was also found that the niche construct does not fully reflect the assumptions of the strengths perspective in terms of mainly two points: (1) the belief in the inherent strengths and capacity for healing of people (human agency), and (2) understanding reality as it is subjectively constructed. Based on this evaluation, it was thus endeavoured to broaden both the description of social niche, based on a critical evaluation of the ecological analogy, and to reflect more fully the strengths perspective. A revised definition of social niche is proposed and each of the niche components presented in the definition are discussed, evaluated and in some instances broadened, as indicated earlier. Farm dwellers' experience of their environment is explored and described, following a qualitative approach in order to promote an understanding of their specific experience from their own viewpoint. The social niche is used, in addition, as a tentative conceptual framework to describe the main dimensions of their experience. Analysis of the farm dwellers' narratives produced six categories (each with several sub-categories), namely: employment (unhealthy working conditions for men, employment security threatened, grievance procedures unsatisfactory, limited work opportunities and underemployment of women); income and spending (inadequate income and high cost of living, debt trap, a longing for the former practice of 'mahala', and supplementing income); housing (housing security threatened, and availability and access to housing outside the neighbourhood a concern); transportation (distance, means of transport and cost involved are major considerations); community life (the importance of family and friends, lack of connection between residents, community life in the past being better, and ambivalence about the employer as support system); and people, places and services outside the immediate farm environment (importance of extended family, church as a source of strength, and health services a link with the outside world). It is concluded that numerous entrapping elements are present in the account of farm dwellers of their life on the farm, namely a lack of tangible resources, a lack of social resources and a low sense of power. The entrapping nature of farm dwellers' social niche, however, can not only be understood in terms of lack of social and tangible resources. The experiences and the meanings the farm dwellers attach to their environment provide the key to a better understanding of the living experiences of farm dwellers and the entrapment contained in their narratives. However, it also reveals their experience of a few enabling elements within this environment. Based on the critical analysis of viewing the environment from a strengths perspective, the evaluation and broadening of the concept of social niche, and findings from the fieldwork done with farm dwellers, a social niche approach for assessing environmental strengths and risks is proposed. The goal of the social niche assessment approach is to provide a framework to review people's environmental strengths and risks/stressors, based on their own experience and understanding, in collaboration with another person (social worker), so as to co-construct a description of their human environment. A diagram and description of the approach is provided. This approach has already been validated through peer evaluation.

Skeppstedt, Tobias. "Dimensionering och optimering av ett PV-system för en elintensiv industribyggnad i södra Norrland : En fallstudie med avseende på teknik, ekonomi och klimat." Thesis, Högskolan i Gävle, Energisystem, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-27017.

Abstract:
The construction of photovoltaic systems has seen an exponential growth in recent years, both internationally and in Sweden. This is mainly due to declining costs and a technology that is getting more efficient while also being seen upon as one of the solutions on the issues regarding climate change. Despite this economic support schemes are often necessary for making PV‑systems profitable, and even though these systems do not generate greenhouse gas emissions during the operating phase, they emit a significant amount during the manufacturing processes of the components. In this case study technical, economical and climate related aspects surrounding a potential PV‑installation in an electric intense industry building in southern Norrland are investigated. The main purpose of this study was to dimension suitable PV‑systems to conduct necessary calculations concerning economical payback times to establish whether PV‑installations can be made profitable within the manufacturing industry. In addition to this a climate impact analysis was going to be made for such systems. The dimensioning process was conducted by firstly gathering quantitative data through measurements and investigations of the object. Thereafter simulations were run to establish optimized conditions for which different PV‑systems could be modelled by companies active in the field. These systems where then used as a foundation to make the necessary calculations regarding payback time. For the climate impact analysis three emission scenarios from PV‑systems where put together and compared to emissions from different cases of electricity production. These data were collected through a comprehensive literature review. The results show that PV‑systems can be profitable within the manufacturing industry, but most likely only with economic support schemes. Even with economic support the profitability is far less than that of private households. Also, industries, in some cases, seem to make more money selling excess electricity rather than saving bought electricity. This is diametrically opposite other parties. The climate impact analysis shows that PV‑systems are highly efficient when it comes to climate change mitigation outside Sweden´s boarders, but also seem to show that they might increase the amount of emissions in Sweden´s electricity mix. This might mean that PV‑installations in Sweden has a negative effect locally, but a positive effect globally, due to a possible increase in exported electricity from Sweden as the number of installations increase.    Keywords: PV system, dimensioning, optimization, manufacturing industry, economic payback time, greenhouse gas emissions, electricity mix.

Abstract:
An office building (sthlm new hus 4) located in the south of Hammarbyhamnen overlooking Hammarbybacken is planned in 2018. Climate control of the office building are via radiators, high-temperature chilled beam and pre-treated supply air. The building is currently being designed for district heating and remote cooling. The study aims to investigate whether borehole thermal energy system (BTES) are a reasonable alternative to provide the office building with heat and cooling, from an environmental- and life cycle cost (LCC) perspective. The aim of the study is to generate an energy requirement for the office building, which is done by construct a model of the building using IDA ICE, a simulation software. The energy requirement is covered by either district heating/-cooling (energy system I) or BTES (energy system II) as the primary energy source. A model of the BTES is constructed in excel based on data from experience input. Life cycle cost analysis are used for economical comparison between the energy systems. The environmental assessment is based on Nordic electricity mix, which controls the impact of the energy systems. Energy system II entails a need for energy support to avoid over dimension the heat pump, which is done by complementing the surplus need through district heating and remote cooling. LCC shows an economic breakpoint at 11-year calculation period, where BTES becomes economically advantageously. Environmentally, energy system II releases 14.3 tonnes of CO2eq compared to energy system II which results in a reduced emission of 47 tonnes of CO2eq based on Nordic electricity mix.

Abstract:
The main objective of this work was to develop a model for recognizing and reproduzing trip-chaining patterns by walk. The process of modeling was conducted applying the techniques of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), by using one of the static networks MLP and the Elman dynamic network. The analysis of the performance of the model was based on the origin-destination home-interview survey carried out by METRÔ-SP in São Paulo Metropolitan Area in 1987. The mode of trip by walk was fixed in the model, and, in the sequential approach, individual travel patterns were represented in terms of two components: trip duration and activity type. The analysis was accomplished starting from the general and specific classifications for each segment of the chained trips, which allowed the comparison of the results between the observed travel patterns and reproduced ones through ANNs. In general classification, 5 of the patterns most frequently predicted by the ANNs represented 58.9% of the individuals in the dataset used for testing the model performance. For the vectors of two and four trips, the neural networks reproduced 50% of trip durations and 90% of the activities, such as work and school. Although those results seem not so robust, it does not mean that they are wrong. The percentages above represent the probability of a person making trips with those durations or type of activities.

Abstract:
An artificial Neural Network (ANN) system has been developed that can analyse aircraft flight data to provide a reconstruction of the aerodynamic loads experienced by the aircraft during flight, including manoeuvre, buffet and distributed loading. For this research data was taken from the International Follow-On Structural Test Project (IFOSTP) F/A-18 fatigue test conducted by the Royal Australian Air Force and Canadian Forces. This fatigue test involved the simultaneous application of both manouevre and buffet loads using airbag actuators and shakers. The applied loads were representative of the actual loads experienced by an FA/18 during flight tests. Following an evaluation of different ANN types an Ellman network with three linear layers was selected. The Elman back-propagation network was tested with various parameters and structures. The network was trained using the MATLAB 'traingdx' function with is a gradient descent with momentum and adaptive learning rate back-propagation algorithm. The ANN was able to provide a good approximation of the actual manoeuvre or buffet loads at the location where the training loads data were recorded even for input values which differ from the training input values. In further tests the ability to estimate distributed loading at locations not included in the training data was also demonstrated. The ANN was then modified to incorporate various methods for the calculation and prediction of output error and reliability Used in combination and in appropriate circumstances, the addition of these capabilities significantly increase the reliability, accuracy and therefore usefulness of the ANN system's ability to estimate aircraft loading. To demonstrate the ANN system's usefulness as a fatigue monitoring tool it was combined with a formulae for crack growth analysis. Results inficate the ANN system may be a useful fatigue monitoring tool enabling real time monitoring of aircraft critical components using existing strain gauge sensors.

Abstract:
The thesis concentrates on using recurrent neural networks in computer vision. The theoretical part describes the basic knowledge about artificial neural networks with focus on a recurrent architecture. There are presented some of possible applications of the recurrent neural networks which could be used for a solution of real problems. The practical part concentrates on face recognition from an image sequence using the Elman simple recurrent network. For training there are used the backpropagation and backpropagation through time algorithms.

Considering the importance of the chemical coagulation control for the water treatment by direct filtration, this work proposes the application of artificial neural networks for inference of dosage control signals of principal and auxiliary coagulant, in the chemical coagulation process in a water treatment plant by direct filtration. To that end, was made a comparative analysis of the application of models based on neural networks, such as: Focused Time Lagged Feedforward Network (FTLFN); Distributed Time Lagged Feedforward Network (DTLFN); Elman Recurrent Network (ERN) and Non-linear Autoregressive with exogenous inputs (NARX). From the comparative analysis, the model based on NARX networks showed better results, demonstrating the potential of the model for use in real cases, which will contribute to the viability of projects of this nature in small size water treatment plants.
