Abstract:

Exceptionally long-lived individuals (ELLI) who are the focus of many healthy longevity studies around the globe are now being studied in Israel. The Israeli Multi-Ethnic Centenarian Study (IMECS) cohort is utilized here for assessment of various DNA methylation clocks. Thorough phenotypic characterization and whole blood samples were obtained from ELLI, offspring of ELLI, and controls aged 53–87 with no familial exceptional longevity. DNA methylation was assessed using Illumina MethylationEPIC Beadchip and applied to DNAm age online tool for age and telomere length predictions. Relative telomere length was assessed using qPCR T/S (Telomere/Single copy gene) ratios. ELLI demonstrated juvenile performance in DNAm age clocks and overall methylation measurement, with preserved cognition and relative telomere length. Our findings suggest a favorable DNA methylation profile in ELLI enabling a slower rate of aging in those individuals in comparison to controls. It is possible that DNA methylation is a key modulator of the rate of aging and thus the ELLI DNAm profile promotes healthy longevity.

Summary This collection of essays arose from the 2017 Luther Jubilee and aims to explain the issue of sola scriptura, largely by approaching it historically as a theme that exercised Lutherans (and others). The essays examine Luther himself and the issues at stake since the era of the Reformation with a special section for the Reformation Jubilees of each century. One cannot be sure that sola scriptura has been defended or defined but at least the book shows that it is still a theological principle to be reckoned with. Zusammenfassung Diese Aufsatzsammlung entstand im Zuge des Luther-Jubiläums 2017 und zielt auf die Erläuterung des Prinzips sola scriptura ab. Der Ansatz ist hauptsächlich historischer Art und erschließt einen Themenbereich, der Lutheraner (und andere) sehr beschäftigt hat. Die Aufsätze beleuchten die Theologie Luthers und die Anliegen, um die es seit der Reformation ging; ein besonderer Abschnitt ist den Reformationsjubiläen in jedem Jahrhundert gewidmet. Dabei bleibt offen, ob das Prinzip sola scriptura erläutert oder definiert wird, aber das Buch zeigt in jedem Fall, dass sola scriptura immer noch ein aussagekräftiges theologisches Prinzip darstellt. Résumé Ce recueil d’essais est un fruit du Jubilé Luther en 2017. Son objectif est de faire le tour de la question du sola scriptura en considérant celui-ci de manière essentiellement historique comme un sujet ayant suscité le débat chez les luthériens (et d’autres). Les articles portent sur Luther lui-même et les enjeux du débat depuis la période de la Réforme. Une section spéciale est consacrée à chacun des Jubilés de la Réforme. Après lecture, on est incapable de dire si le sola scriptura a été défendu ou même seulement défini, mais ce livre présente au moins l’intérêt de rappeler qu’il constitue toujours un principe théologique dont il faut tenir compte.

Abstract:

Lifelong learning skills have been shown to benefit students during and after college. This paper discusses the use of the Effective Lifelong Learning Inventory (ELLI) in a first-year composition course. Reflective writing assignments and pre- and post-semester ELLI data were used to assess student growth as lifelong learners over the course of a semester. Statistically significant gains in lifelong learning dimensions were made by students in the study as compared to those in a control group who received no direct instruction. The authors reflect on the outcomes of the project for students and instructors and question the general assumptions often made about the outcomes of a college education, namely, whether students gain lifelong learning skills simply by virtue of attending college, or is more instruction on these “intangible” qualities needed?

Abstract:

The relationship between pupils’ in-class and out-of-class language-related, often digital, practices is becoming a central concern in current language education when pedagogic designs are considered. The study looks at a 12-year-old Finnish pupil, her parents and the teacher exploring their understandings of language learning during a research interview in a home environment. An ecological approach and nexus analysis are introduced as the theoretical framework for this qualitative study. The study sheds light on how the pupil, her parents and the teacher were engaged in (re)negotiating their understandings of language learning. The analysis focuses on discourses emerging as important while the participants together examined various sites of language learning and use. The encounter with the family opened up a negotiation space to investigate the complexity of language learning, and the legitimacy of everyday language practices as a meaningful resource for formal instruction. The research interview provided a change-generating mediational means for the participants to explore change. The study raises new questions concerning parents’ understandings of learning, the home space for language ecology, language education, curriculum reform and teacher education.

Abstract:

Geniposide is a well-known iridoid glycoside compound and is an essential component of a wide variety of traditional phytomedicines, for example, Gardenia jasminoides Elli (Zhizi in Chinese), Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. (Duzhong in Chinese), Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch. (Dihuang in Chinese), and Achyranthes bidentata Bl. (Niuxi in Chinese). It is also the main bioactive component of Gardeniae Fructus, the dried ripe fruit of Gardenia jasminoides Ellis. Increasing pharmacological evidence supports multiple medicinal properties of geniposide including neuroprotective, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antidepressant-like, cardioprotective, antioxidant, immune-regulatory, antithrombotic, and antitumoral effects. It has been proposed that geniposide may be a drug or lead compound for the prophylaxis and treatment of several diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes and diabetic complications, ischemia and reperfusion injury, and hepatic disorders. The aim of the present review is to give a comprehensive summary and analysis of the pharmacological properties of geniposide, supporting its use as a medicinal agent.

Abstract:

Background:The assessment of activity in spondyloarthritis (SpA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) involves several domains, including enthesitis. Clinical enthesitis has shown low sensitivity, specificity and reliability. The MAdrid Sonographic Enthesitis Index (MASEI) is a feasible and reliable ultrasound score, but its responsiveness to treatment has not yet been evaluated.Objectives:The main objective of this study was to investigate the sensitivity to change of MASEI in active SpA and PsA patients.Methods:Longitudinal study in patients with SpA and PsA with active disease (defined as patients who were going to start or switch biologic disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARD) therapy according to physician criteria and in agreement with clinical guidelines). MASEI evaluation was performed at baseline, 3- and 6-months visits. MASEI and Outcome Measures in Rheumatology (OMERACT) enthesitis Power Doppler (PD) definitions were checked. Each enthesis was scanned in both the longitudinal and transverse planes, and 5 second videos were recorded for reliability. An inter-reader analysis by three readers was performed. For statistical analysis t-Student test was used to determine changes between visits and kappa test was used for reliability.Results:A total of 72 US evaluations of 25 patients were included, of whom 13(52%) were ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients, 9(36%) PsA, and 3(12%) non radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA). Mean age was 51.2±14.1 years and 13(52%) were females. Mean DAS28 (3.5±1.2) for peripheral involvement, mean BASDAI (5.8±2) for axial involvement, and CRP values (13.1±13.6) reflect moderate-high disease activity at baseline. US parameters at baseline and at the 3- and 6-month follow-up visits are shown in Table 1. Global MASEI score was responsive at the 3- and 6-month follow-up visit (-4.9 and -5.7, respectively) (p<0.05) and both MASEI and OMERACT PDUS definitions of active enthesitis improved significantly at 3- (-0.6 and -1.1) and 6-month follow-up visits (-0.7 and -1.1) (p<0.05). This short Karagkiozis play, by the writer and Resistance fighter Elli Alexiou, was discovered in the archives of the Greek Communist Party. Karagkiozis, the Greek popular shadow theatre, was used during the Resistance (1941–1944) to promote the struggle against the German occupiers. Here, the main hero, who, for some researchers, symbolizes the low-class Greek citizen, abandons his eternal hunger to join the Resistance movement. But he never abandons his playfulness and jokes, even during the darkest times of the Greek history.

Kiemel egyes népmesei motívumokat, bemutatja többek között a mesék jellemző szereplőit és színtereit. Yüz elli yıl önce 1872’de Kayseri Mevlevîhânesi’nde doğan ve 6 Kasım 1944 tarihinde aynı şehirde vefat eden Ahmet Remzi Akyürek, Tanzimat ve Cumhuriyet döneminin ilim ve irfân, nesir ve nazım, kitap ve kütüphane dünyamızın mühim şahsiyetlerinden biridir. Tasavvuf âleminde postnişin olarak Kütahya, Kastamonu, Halep ve İstanbul mevlevîhânelerinde hizmet vermiş, insan yetiştirmiştir. 1925’de tekkeler sırlandığında Üsküdar Mevlevîhânesi şeyhi olan Dede, daha sonra Üsküdar Selimağa Kütüphanesi’nde başmemur olarak 12 yıl daha hizmetlerine devam etmiş, yerli yabancı ilim yolcularına elinden geldiği kadar yardımcı olmuştur.[1] Farsça ve Türkçe iki dîvan sahibi olan, Arapça ve Farsça’dan yirmiye yakın kitap neşreden Dede’nin bir eseri de Bursalı Mehmet Tâhir tarafından, II. Meşrutiyet döneminde üç cilt olarak yayınlanan Osmanlı Müellifleri[2] isimli meşhur eserin fihristidir: Miftāhu’l-kutūb ve Esāmī-i Muellifīn Fihristi, İstanbul 1927.[3] Cumhuriyet’in ilk yıllarında, özellikle 1924’te medreselerin, bir yıl sonra tekkelerin kapatılmasıyla birlikte, eğitim ve irfan hayatında büyük bir düzen değişikliği olduğu için birçok insanın aç ve açıkta kaldığı bilinmektedir. Bu arada farklı bir meslekte hayatını idâme ettirebilecek bir iş bulabilenler de oldu. Remzi Dede onlardan biridir. Fakat bir mevlevîhânede doğan ve elli yıllık ömrü mevlevîhânelerin huzur ve coşku dolu köşelerinde geçen bir insan için yeni görev yerleri ne kadar huzur ve sükûn verici olabilirdi? Burada şöyle bir soru sorulabilir: Her şey Allah’tandır (Nisâ 4/79) ilkesine gönülden inanan insanlar, olup biten olaylara üzülür mü? Bu sorunun cevabı olan âyetin Türkçesi makalemizin başında Hz. Yâkub’un ifadesiyle yer almaktadır.

1962'de "Journal of Bible Religion" (Din ve Kitab-ı Mukaddes Dergisi), yayıncıları "en çok yedi bin kelime" ile son elli yılda "Dinler Tarihi'nin Gelişiminin" bir özetini yazmaya beni davet etmişlerdi. Eski ve Yeni Ahid incelemelerini tartışmak başka yazarlara ait olduğu için, bu sahalar benim çalışmamın dışında kalmıştır. İşte, bu kitabı hazırlarken daha önce yazmış olduğum bu metni gözden geçirdim ve eksikleri tamamladım. Diğer sahalarda çalışan Dinler Tarihçileri tarafından yapılan keşiflere doğrudan bağlı olan Kitab-ı Mukaddes incelemelerinde görülen bazı temayüllere rağmen; yazının esas plânında hiç bir değişiklik yapmadım.

Amaç: Amik Ovası pamuk bitkilerinde bitki tahtakuruları (Lygus gemellatus (HerrichSchäffer), Lygus pratensis Linnaeus ve Creontiades pallidus (Rambur)) (Hemiptera: Miridae)’nın mevsimsel popülasyon dalgalanmasının değerlendirilmesi.Yöntem ve Bulgular: Çalışmalar Hatay İli Amik Ovasının Kırıkhan, Reyhanlı, Kumlu, Demirköprü ve Uydukent İlçelerinde bulunan elli pamuk tarlasında gerçekleştirilmiştir. Her ilçeden 10 farklı pamuk tarlası seçilmiştir. Örneklemeler haftalık olarak her pamuk tarlasından 45 cm çapında atrapla 25 (ileri-geri) şeklinde alınmıştır. Her bir örnekleme yeri ve pamuk tarlası için bitki taktakurularının erginleri ve nimfleri bitki materyallerinden ayıklanmış, sayılmış ve kaydedilmiştir. Örneklenen beş ilçede (elli pamuk tarlası) toplam 1855 adet bitki taktakurusu atrap ile yakalanmıştır. En fazla bitki taktakurusu Demirköprü’de kaydedilirken, onu Reyhanlı, Uydukent, Kumlu ve Kırıkhan izlemiştir. Diğer örnekleme tarihlerine kıyasla en yüksek bitki taktakurusu ortalaması 8 Ekim'de kaydedilmiştir. Ayrıca, en büyük miktarda bitki taktakurusu Eylül ayında kaydedilmiş, bunu Ekim, Ağustos ve Temmuz ayları takip etmiştir.
