In Australian Aboriginal affairs, the acculturative strand of assimilation developed in large part from Elkin’s religious and Idealist commitment, for which in the years 1928 to 1933 he won social-scientific authority. In competition with both an eliminationist politics of race and a segregationist politics of territory, Elkin drew upon religious experience, apologetics, sociology, and networks to establish a ‘positive policy’ as an enduring ideal in Aboriginal affairs. His leadership of the 1930s reform movement began within the Anglican Church, became national through civic-religious organs of publicity, and gained scientific authority as Elkin made religious themes a central concern in Australian anthropology. But from the 1960s until recently, most scholars have lost sight of the centrality of Idealism and religion in our protagonist’s seminal project of acculturative assimilation. This thesis aims to show how Elkin dealt with problems fundamental to twentieth century Aboriginal affairs and indeed to Australian modernity more generally – problems of faith and science, morality and expediency – in developing his positive policy towards Aborigines.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes a new approach to gauging the political content of American postmodernist literature. Locating its analysis inside the historical intensities of the mid-60s through to the early 70s – the Nixon Years – it argues that the period’s experimental writing inscribes a climate of political crisis by invoking the mythologies that drive U.S. ideological thinking, and then unravelling the contestations inside those mythologies. The argument revolves around four case studies, each of which is tested for the degree to which its formal postmodernist strategies underpin a periodic expression of equivocation inside America’s foundational myths. In the first extended analysis of the novelist Irvin Faust, the author’s metafictions are shown to destabilise the inherited myth of City Upon a Hill exceptionalism, particularly around Vietnam. In the under-examined work of Rudolph Wurlitzer, the myth of the western frontier – re-invoked by Kennedy’s New Frontier in 1960 – is ontologically reimagined as a site of regressive violence as opposed to civilised progress. The Nixon Years novels of Stanley Elkin, meanwhile, are positioned as postmodernist parables whose rhetorical extravagance is targeted at the American myth of success, and the financial crisis of 1973. The discrete strategies of these three writers are then examined in aggregate in the work of a canonical postmodernist, Donald Barthelme, and lead to the suggestion that his major novels of the Nixon Years, Snow White and The Dead Father, are overarching expressions of a trajectory from a frustrated optimism in the Kennedy 60s to a crisis of political inertia and recursion in the Watergate mid-70s. The thesis concludes that American postmodernist literature can be read as a politically critical engagement with the grand narratives of America’s foundation, and its persistent political rhetoric, where the destabilisations of assumed narrative forms inscribe the disorientations inside America’s traditions of public belief.

Abstract:

Home automation systems of today tend to be external solutions to an existing product that enable rather complex and expensive communications equipment to be attached to existing products. This is because it would not be economically defendable to implement the communications hardware internally in the products, due to a high increase of the cost for the product. This thesis tries to solve this problem by introducing a low-cost product-embedded solution for home automation. By using the Elvin protocol together with low-cost communication solutions, such as the RS232 protocol and Open/Closed circuits, communications could be embedded into products and device interaction could be implemented without increasing the cost of already existing products too much. Furthermore this thesis will discuss an implementation of an Elvin router that will act as a bridge between RS232, Open/Closed circuits and the Ethernet network that contains an Elvin server.

Abstract:

The purpose of this essay is to examine how Elin Wägner depicts the middle-aged woman who lives in the country in Sweden, in the 1920’s. The question at issue is: What problems and what subjects for rejoicing does she raise? My aim is to try to understand the women’s situation, as well as how Elin Wägner describes the situation in her four novels from the 1920’s: Den namnlösa (1922), Silverforsen (1924), Natten till söndag (1926) och Svalorna flyga högt (1929). At the same time I intend to compare the woman of the 1920’s to the situation of women today.

I am writing from a feministic literary theory called “omläsning” according to the description of Gunilla Domellöf. In other words, a re-reading of the text with new eyes, in order to let the view of the woman become more visible. The method I have used is Hans Robert Jauss’ “Rezeptionsästhetik”.

I came to the conclusion that the novels describe the reality in a plain way, possibly somewhat coloured by Elin Wägner’s feministic starting point. She is commited to the public debate on problems of modern society as well as very familiar with the woman question. Her main themes are love, marriage, divorce and self-realization.

Avhandlingen, som undersökt Elin Wägners skönlitterära författarskap och journalistik under 1920-talet, visar att det är då hon stiger fram som en internationell rörelseintellektuell. Då formulerar hon sina åsikter om hur världen bör styras och hur kvinnor och män skall agera för att nå jämställdhet och fred, frågor som kom att stå i fokus för hennes liv och fortsatta författarskap. Det är med hjälp av internationell forskning och litteratur som Wägner blottlägger förhållandena i Sverige och påverkar den svenska debatten.Som introduktör av tänkare som Rosa Mayreder, Mathilde Vaerting och Mary Parker Follett kunde hon avslöja det korstryck som svenska kvinnor var utsatta för och samtidigt presentera ett eget koncet om en möjlig framtid för kvinnor och män. I avhandlingen har den första mer systematska analysen av Wägners insatser i veckotidningen Tidevarvet under åren 1923-1930 genomförts. Här framträder Wägner i många skepnader som kåsör, ledarskribent, recensent och utrikeskorrespondent men alltid med syftet att påverka läsaren i viss riktning. Med sina tre K:teman: kvinnan, kärleken och kriget speglar hon verkligheten utifrån två perspektiv, ett kortsiktigt pessimistiskt och ett längre optimmistiskt perspektiv.Det är i Tidevarvet som hon presenterar sin radikalpacifism och visarsitt starka beroende och inflytande av Gandhi och hans icke-våldsaktivism.Avhandlingens andra del behandlar Wägners 1920-talsromaner, vilka ofta benämnts som smålandsromaner men som i avhandlingen räknas som utvecklingsromaner om den medelålders kvinnans rätt till livsutrymme och sexualitet. Istället för att betrakta protagonisterna som offer, vilket ofta skett i tidigare forskning, visar avhandlingen att de istället agerar som visionära feminister med starka personligheter och tydliga livsmål. Det ärockså under tjugotalet som Wägner bekänner sig som kristen och närmar sig kväkarna, men engagerar sig även i den svenska kyrkan. Hon granskar prästernas dubbelmoral och förljugna inställning till äktenskap och skilsmässa både i sina romaner och i Tidevarvet. Dock är hon mest kritisk till att kyrkan inte på allvar driver fredens sak.Wägner är inte bara radikal i sin tid utan såg även vilka idéer och personer som tillhörde framtiden och framstår därför som både tidstypisk och tidlös.


Elin Wägner and her literary activities in the 1920s have not been a main interest for literary research. Instead, her writings from earlier or later decades are studied at length. Nevertheless, my dissertation indicates that it was during this decade several of her important projects in life and literature took place. The main purpose of the study is to present Wägner’s influence in the Swedish debate in a number of issues as feminism, pacifism and internationalism.

My point of departure is Wägners journalistic authorship in the radical weekly Tidevarvet (1923-1930) and her novels Den Namnlösa (1922), Silverforsen (1924), Natten till söndag (1926), Svalorna flyga högt (1929) and Från Seine, Rhen och Ruhr (1923), a collection of short stories. Using the concept movement intellectual, which has been further developed in the dissertation, the study indicates that Wägner, mostly with ideas and results from abroad, managed to influence both her organizations, their members and the general public. Her methods were three: writing, speaking and mobilization, and the arena was her fiction, her journalism and her networks. The intentions were much the same in all her activities.

Wägner’s international work for peace in the war-torn Europe during the first part of the decade changed her and her outlook on war and peace. She became a radical pacifist and negotiated on behalf of organizations as the Quakers, the Red Cross and WILP, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. Her devotion for peace is specially evident in Tidevarvet, the political weekly founded by FKR, Frisinnade Kvinnors Riksförbund, in 1923, where Wägner was active both as a writer and an editor. Here the influence from Gandhi and the Quakers is prominent, and Wägner tries all her life to introduce Gandhi to the Swedish public.

In the 1920s Elin Wägner also started her studies of matriarcy and her research of women’s history where the influence from international feminists as Rosa Mayreder, Mathilde Varting and Mary Parker Follett gave her arguments to strengthen women’s position and confidence both as women and as political citizens. At Fogelstad and Kvinnliga Medborgarskolan, Wägner, together with the other members in the Fogelstad Group, were active educating women for their new citizenship. As members in FKR also worked to get seats in the Parliament, but failed. My study shows why.

Detta examensarbete har skett i samarbete med Stadsmuseet i Skövde inför en utställning under sommaren och hösten 2013 om staden Skövdes skyddshelgon S:ta Elin. Arbetet innehåller en undersökning om hur en 3D-animerad karaktärs icke-verbala uppförande tillsammans med dess ikonografiska attribut kan fungera engagerande för publiken på ett sätt som stödjer syfte och mål med utställningen. För utställningen var målet att göra besökarna intresserade av vad som ligger bakom legenden. För utvärderingen skapades en prototyp i form av animerad 3D-karaktär som ingick i en kortfilm till utställningen om Elinlegenden. Karaktären Elin var i filmen "stum", i betydelsen att hon inte talade själv, därför var det viktigt att hennes karaktär ändå klarade att uttrycka personlighetsdrag. För examensarbetet valdes tre utvärderingsmetoder för att samla in data. Det användes en fokusgrupp för att utvärdera gestaltningen av S:ta Elin och två enkäter (en vid utställningen och en online).

Customers play an essential role in the growth and success of any business. Wineries and other agricultural-based enterprises that actively engage and/or involve customers in production and other central processes do so for reasons that transcend simple marketing strategies. This qualitative study explores the strategic potential of customer inclusion in the operations of locally and/or regionally-based agricultural enterprises vis-à-vis on-site tourist models. This exploration relies on the theoretical principles of value co-creation to identify and illustrate how agritourism enterprises can more purposefully and strategically engage and embed consumers within their business operations. Atmosphere, compromise, and investment of consumers within the value creation process leads to the transition of such consumers; taking them passive recipients to active participants.

Pro gradu -työni aihe on huumori tieteen yleistajuistajana. Tutkimuskohteena käytän Niko Kettusen Helsingin Sanomissa ilmestyvää Viikon eläin -palstaa, jossa tieteelliset faktat jostain eliölajista toimivat metaforana yhteiskunnalliselle, ajankohtaiselle ilmiölle — tai toisinpäin. Aineisto koostuu 70 artikkelista, jotka olen jakanut viiteen eri luokkaan sen perusteella, miten tiede ja yhteiskunnallinen ilmiö toimivat niissä toistensa metaforina. Työni teoreettinen viitekehys on metafora- ja huumoritutkimuksessa. Metaforan teoriaa ammennan erityisesti Iina Hellstenin vuonna 2002 ilmestyneestä väitöskirjasta The Politics of Metaphor, jossa Hellsten tarkastelee metaforan mahdollisuuksia tieteen ja journalismin kohtauspaikkana. Huumoritutkimuksesta hyödynnän Janne Zareffin vuonna 2012 ilmestynyttä väitöskirjaa Journalistinen komiikka, jossa Zareff tutkii, millaisia ehtoja inkongruentin komiikan on täytettävä, jotta se olisi journalistista. Keskeisiä tutkimuskysymyksiäni ovat: Miten humoristinen metafora toimii tieteen yleistajuistajana ja viihteellistäjänä? Toimiiko tiedejournalismin koominen metafora samoin kuin journalistinen komiikka? Aineiston luokittelun avulla pyrin tarkastelemaan eläimen ja yhteiskunnallisen ilmiön metaforista suhdetta sekä metaforan lähteen ja kohteen välistä liikettä eli muun muassa sitä, mitä verrataan ja mihin. Palstan journalistisuutta pohtiessani olen analysoinut sen käyttämiä komiikan keinoja ja genreä. Näiden pohjalta tein päätelmän, että ollakseen journalistista (yleistä ja ajankohtaista) palstan komiikka tarvitsee yhteiskunnallisen skriptin. Journalistisen komiikan käyttö pelkkää tiedettä yleistajuistettaessa on vaikeaa, koska tiede ei ole samalla tapaa tuttujen näkökulmien kehystämää ja ajankohtaisuuteen sidottua kuin journalismi. Komiikan vaikutus yleistajuistetun tieteen sisältöön ja oppimiseen sekä kiinnostuksen herättämiseen kaipaa kuitenkin mielestäni lisää tutkimusta.

Abstract:
Studien är en analys av Elin Wägners Norrtullsligan (1908) och Pennskaftet (1910) ur ett rumsligt perspektiv, med inriktning på genus. Syftet är att fördjupa läsningen av romanerna samt relatera dem till sin tids- och samhällskontext. Romanerna utspelar sig i medelklassmiljöer i Stockholm under tidigt 1900-tal, och handlar om kvinnor som omformulerar sina roller ochengagerar sig i bättre villkor. De centrala frågorna är: Hur gestaltas, representeras och diskuteras rum och stad i romanerna? Vilka rum använder karaktärerna och hur använder de dem? Den teoretiska utgångpunkten är att kombinera litteraturvetenskap med rumsteori, inspirerad av Alexandra Borgs avhandling En vildmark av sten (2011). Rummet uppfattas som en social produkt, med hjälp av begrepp från Henri Lefevbre. Studien relaterar till de tidigare analyser av Wägners romaner som gjorts med feministiska eller rumsliga förtecken. Studien visar att rummen skildras ur romanernas tydligt kvinnligt subjektiva perspektiv. Kvinnorna lever under alternativa bostadsformer men erkänner inte dessa bostäder som hem. De anser sig behöva en man för att legitimera hemmet. Vidare är kvinnornas tillvaro i de offentligastadsrummen sexualiserad och i romanerna hanterar kvinnorna detta genom att ge sig in i en identitetsmaskerad, där de genom att utge sig vara omoraliska skapar sig frihet. Studien diskuterar också arbetsplatser och rum för politisk verksamhet i romanerna.

Abstract:
Hyperbolic-Sine (Sinh) filters form a subclass of Externally-Linear-Internally-Non-Linear (ELIN) systems. They can handle large-signals in a low power environment under half the capacitor area required by the more popular ELIN Log-domain filters. Their inherent class-AB nature stems from the odd property of the sinh function at the heart of their companding operation. Despite this early realisation, the Sinh filtering paradigm has not attracted the interest it deserves to date probably due to its mathematical and circuit-level complexity. This Thesis presents an overview of the CMOS weak inversion Sinh filtering paradigm and explains how biomedical systems of low- to audio-frequency range could benefit from it. Its dual scope is to: consolidate the theory behind the synthesis and design of high order Sinh continuous–time filters and more importantly to confirm their micro-power consumption and 100+ dB of DR through measured results presented for the first time. Novel high order Sinh topologies are designed by means of a systematic mathematical framework introduced. They employ a recently proposed CMOS Sinh integrator comprising only p-type devices in its translinear loops. The performance of the high order topologies is evaluated both solely and in comparison with their Log domain counterparts. A 5th order Sinh Chebyshev low pass filter is compared head-to-head with a corresponding and also novel Log domain class-AB topology, confirming that Sinh filters constitute a solution of equally high DR (100+ dB) with half the capacitor area at the expense of higher complexity and power consumption. The theoretical findings are validated by means of measured results from an 8th order notch filter for 50/60Hz noise fabricated in a 0.35μm CMOS technology. Measured results confirm a DR of 102dB, a moderate SNR of ~60dB and 74μW power consumption from 2V power supply.

Abstract:
Den heliga kungen och den saliga änkan is a comparative study of the saint legend of Erik and the saint legend of Elin as they are represented each saint’s officium. The base for these comparisons is the question of what general similarities, and differences, there are as well as an immerse investigation of how these legends portray halidom and finally how the issue of femininity and manliness are portrayed through these two legends. During the thesis apparent similarities appear in how the legends are structured; a template seems to have existed in which the content of what a legend should include is stated. Erik, as well as Elin, are of noble birth and are portrayed as godly people who live bountiful and ascetic lives. They also share other common features; both Erik and Elin proceed on a mission before they encounter the enemy which ultimately leads to their martyr deaths. After their deaths various miracles takes place. Several references to the bible occur within both legends with the intention to authorize and emphasize moral virtues. One of the variations between the legends is in the way the saints die. Whereas Erik dies during battle, sword in hand, which is not a completely characteristic way to die the martyr death, Elin instead confronts her destiny with complete stoic composure. In terms on halidom, both saints are defined within the frame of a rex justus, a rightful king, as well as a vidua sancta, a holy widow who prays for her enemies before death. In the comparison between femininity and manliness typical patterns appear in which Erik is described as an energetic man, yet humble before God, whereas Elin is portrayed as fair and vestal, abstemious and virtuous, wise and unpresuming.

In the definite form an adjective in Swedish can end in either -a or -e, with the e-form being used in writing especially with masculine reference together with nouns of the n-gender. For a long time, however, there has been some variation in usage, so that the e-form is sometimes also employed with female reference or together with nouns of t-gender. Widmark shows in a study from 1992 that there is uncertainty among Swedish speakers about how the forms should be used. The aim of the present study is to investigate the extent to which speakers accept different uses in writing of the e-form of the adjective in the definite singular form, and to see whether the sociolinguistic vari­ables age, sex, dialect, education and familiarity with writing are of any significance in this. Another aim is to conduct a comparison with Widmark’s study to see whether there has been any change in usage in the last few decades. The study proceeds from sociolinguistic theory of linguistic variation and changes and uses a quantitative method. In a questionnaire the respondents were asked to judge a number of examples with the e-form of the adjective in different linguistic contexts. The number of respondents was 181; they constitute a convenience sample. To find material for the examples in the questionnaire, a corpus study was undertaken first. The result shows that acceptance of expressions that do not follow the norms of written language is in most cases low. A majority of the respondents think that the e-form should be used primarily with masculine or general reference. Younger respondents are more uncertain about usage, while older respondents follow the written standard to a higher extent. Women take a more negative view of non-standard uses; on the other hand, more men than women are positive towards examples where the e-form is used according to the norm. Dialect is significant in that respondents from parts of Sweden where final ‑a has become ‑e are more willing to accept non-standard uses. Respondents with a university education reply to a higher extent in accordance with the written norm. The result found no difference in usage compared with Widmark’s study.

Questo lavoro di tesi è incentrato sulla traduzione di alcuni passaggi di Native Tongue di Suzette Haden Elgin (1984), un romanzo distopico critico femminista. La tesi è divisa in sette capitoli. Il primo capitolo si occupa esclusivamente di fantascienza (poiché Native Tongue è sia romanzo fantascientifico che distopico), e cerca di definire concetti di base quali cosa sia un romanzo fantascientifico e quali siano le caratteristiche di eutopie e distopie. Nel secondo capitolo si tenterà di dare una definizione unitaria di femminismo, e successivamente verrà presentato un excursus storico del movimento femminista statunitense e britannico, includendo alcuni concetti rivoluzionari per il femminismo. Nel terzo capitolo verranno introdotte la linguistica e il linguaggio. Si affronterà la questione dal punto di vista della critica femminista; da qui nasce il bisogno di discutere prima il principio della relatività linguistica, alla base dell’esperimento concettuale di Suzette Haden Elgin, e i due testi capisaldi della linguistica femminista radicale, Man Made Language di Dale Spender (1980) e Women and Men Speaking di Cheris Kramarae (1981). Nel quarto capitolo si approfondirà il tema del linguaggio nei romanzi fantascientifici prima e distopici poi, anche alla luce della teoria di Sapir-Whorf. Nel quinto capitolo si metterà in pratica tutto il lavoro teorico e di ricerca, conducendo l’analisi testuale del romanzo; si espliciteranno i motivi per cui Native Tongue è una distopia sui generis e si individueranno anche caratteristiche che non sono state menzionate in altri lavori di critica. Nel sesto capitolo verrà proposta la traduzione di alcuni passaggi di Native Tongue. Il settimo capitolo, invece, è dedicato al commento alla traduzione: si descriverà brevemente l’approccio metodologico adottato in traduzione e si dimostrerà come un minuzioso lavoro di ricerca enciclopedica e di analisi testuale sia fondamentale per la corretta traduzione del romanzo.

Em agosto de 2007, no município de São Simão, estado de São Paulo, folhas de Eucalyptus camaldulensis infestadas por Glycaspis brimblecombei (Moore, 1964) (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) foram amostradas e nelas foi encontrado indivíduos de um pequeno percevejo verde, que se alimentava de psilídeos. Os percevejos foram identificados como Atopozelus opsimus (Elkins, 1954). Devido à recém descoberta desse predador e a escassez de informação sobre sua bioecologia, este trabalho objetivou estudar a morfologia e morfometria externa, o ciclo biológico e o comportamento de A. opsimus mantidos com G. brimblecombei em condições de laboratório (26 ± 2 oC, 70 ± 10% UR e fotofase de 13 horas). O estudo morfológico e o morfométrico possibilitaram caracterizar todos os estágios de desenvolvimento. Os parâmetros avaliados na biologia foram: duração e viabilidade do estágio ninfal, longevidade dos adultos, viabilidade e número de ovos por fêmea, número de posturas por fêmea, duração do período de incubação e do ciclo total. O percevejo apresentou cinco instares ninfais com duração total de 40, 3 ± 1,40 dias. Fêmeas apresentaram longevidade de 61,0 ± 8,0 e machos de 39,0 ± 5,1 dias. Ambos apresentaram ciclo médio total de vida longo de, 120,2 ± 8,4 e de 92,5 ± 5,9 dias para fêmeas e machos, respectivamente. Desde o primeiro estádio o percevejo se alimentou tanto de ninfas quanto de adultos do psilídeo-de-concha e também apresentou fitofagia e onivoria. Pesticides are generally used in south-Africa for the control of various pests; from insects and fungi to weeds. The agricultural industry is probably the biggest user of pesticides and therefore workers in this part of the labour force have the biggest risk of being exposed to the hazards of these essential products. During the 1988/89 deciduous fruit season the deciduous fruit industry earned approximately R1000 million in foreign exchange. It is therefore very important for this industry to produce fruit of high quality in a very competitive market. Of the total deciduous exports, apples comprised approximately 62,5%. The EIgin-Grabouw area is the biggest producer of apples. This industry is clearly very dependant on pesticides to protect its crops against pests. From time to time farm - workers are exposed to pesticides, a study was therefore performed to access the levels of exposure of farm workers. Blood and urine samples were collected in a comprehensive biological monitoring program in the Elgin area to determine, uusing clinical tests, the level of exposure to pesticides. It was decided later that the determination of pesticide residues in blood would form part of this main study. Other tests included serum and red cell cholinesterase. Samples were collected during August (start of spraying season), November (midseason) and February (end of spraying season). A multi-residue method was developed to extract organophosphate and organochlorine pesticides in whole blood. Although various methods exist, they allow only for the extraction of either organophosphates or organochlorines and not multi-residue extractions. This multi-residue method is based on the liquid/liquid extraction of a blood/Celite/ethanol mixture to extract the following pesticides: Azinphos-methyl, Chlorpyrifos, Endosulfan, Methidathion and Prothiophos. The pesticide residue levels were determined on gas chromatographs equipped with DB-5 and DB-2I0 capillary columns and flame photometric-, electron capture- and nitrogen/phosphorous detectors. The results were confirmed on a gas chromatograph with mass-selective detector in selective ion mode. Of the 402 blood samples analysed, 23 samples showed positive for organophoshates and 29 for organochlorines, and were sent for analysis on the mass spectrometer. Of those samples only one could be positively identified. The presence of the pesticide Endosulfan-B was confirmed. The confirmation of the pesticides was complicated by interfering substances that leached from the rubber stoppers of the collection vessels into the blood. Although the study showed that for practical purposes no pesticides were present, other important information was obtained about the handling and analyses of blood samples for pesticides.

Denna studie har som avsikt att ur ett historiesociologiskt perspektiv försöka förstå den kvinnliga romantiska vänskapen, vad den bestod av, hur den kunde överleva över tid och om den också innehöll maktaspekter. Fenomenet med romantisk vänskap uppstod under romantiken, under 1700- och 1800-talet, och praktiserades av både män och kvinnor. Den romantiska vänskapen var en intim homosocial vänskap som var tämligen accepterad i samhället. Under andra hälften av 1800-talet, när medelklasskvinnorna i Sverige så smått började få medborgerliga rättigheter, var det flera kvinnor som började utbilda sig och yrkesarbeta. Om de gifte sig stod de under förmyndarskap av sin make och fick sluta arbeta, för att istället ägna sig åt hem och familj. Det var under denna tid som ett frirum uppstod, ett frirum för medelklasskvinnor som ville vara självständiga och leva i tvåsamhet med andra kvinnor. Där var de fredade från andras tyckanden, eftersom man inte trodde att kvinnan besvärades av erotiska begär, på samma sätt mannen gjorde. Studiens empiriska material består av två brevsamlingar, skrivna från 1894 till 1939, det vill säga under den tidsepok då den kvinnliga tvåsamhetens frirum existerade. Breven är författade av den svenska författaren och nobelpristagaren Selma Lagerlöf. Brevens mottagare var Lagerlöfs väninnor Sophie Elkan och Valborg Olander. Studien tar också hänsyn till kvinnorörelsen som bland annat tog avstamp i liberalfeminismens tankar och studier avseende social växelverkan mellan människor, vad avser en-, två- och tresamhet. Abstract:
Chinese diaspora in the past seemed to have demonstrated a homeland orientation which made them more likely to cling onto the originating culture and society. This research aims at studying whether and to what extent the homeland orientation of the Chinese people has shifted over time and space. Aberdeen and Elgin were chosen as the bases for data collection. The economic establishment of the Chinese people from dependant migrants to independent businessmen is discussed in detail. The economic institutions which lead to the establishment of a career enclave within catering is also examined. The communal development of the Aberdeen and the Elgin Chinese is studied in terms of the three bases of internal solidarity, i.e., economics, religious faith and kin relations, which work in different ways in the two localities. Due to its uniqueness and its significance to the Elgin Chinese, their True Jesus Church is analysed in greater depth. Bearing in mind the economic and communal development of the Chinese people, the shift in homeland orientation is then examined by using Watson's study of the Mans (1975) as a base line. My findings show that the majority of my Chinese subjects no longer contemplate a return to their homeland. However, most of them would like to retain their cultural distinctiveness in Britain. To a certain extent, the primary point of reference for the Chinese seems to have shifted from the homeland to Britain. This shift is explained tentatively in terms of a transfer of the traditional power hierarchy of the family during migration. Also, the Elgin Chinese conform more to the overall pattern. Their relative uniformity and satisfaction with their lives after migration is explained in terms of the reconstitution of the True Jesus Church which caters for their many social and practical needs.

Abstract:
Tutkielmassa selvitetään, miten 1800-luvun loppupuolella alkanut kehitysromaanin murros ilmenee Juhani Ahon romaaneissa Papin tytär (1885) ja Papin rouva (1893). Kehitysromaani nousi keskeiseksi kirjallisuudenlajiksi modernin ihmiskäsityksen syntyaikoihin. Moderniin ihmiskäsitykseen kuului, ettei ihminen omaksunut valmista, perittyä elämänmuotoa, vaan etsi omaa identiteettiään ja paikkaansa yhteiskunnassa. Tätä kehitysromaanille tyypillistä, jo 1700-luvulta peräisin olevaa ajatusta alettiin kritisoida sata vuotta myöhemmin. Yksilöllisen kasvuprosessin murtuminen on lähtökohtana teosten tarkastelussa. Realismin aikakaudella henkilöhahmot olivat erityisesti mielenkiinnon kohteina. Molempien teosten päähenkilönä on Elli, jonka kasvu ja kehitys ovat tutkielmassa keskeisellä sijalla. Päähenkilö ei ole romaanissa enää juonta teenpäin vievä toimija, vaan ainutlaatuinen yksilö, jonka luonteen ymmärtämisestä riippuu koko teoksen ymmärtäminen. Henkilökuvaukseen läheisesti liittyvät arjen kuvaukset tuovat mukaan myös yhteiskunnallisen todellisuuden. Ellin kasvatuksesta ja koulutuksesta käydyt keskustelut liitetään 1800-luvun yleisiin käsityksiin sivistyksestä, kasvatuksesta ja koulutuksesta. Koska realistisessa kirjallisuudessa teosten väliset suhteet ovat tärkeitä teosten illuusioiden luomisessa, Papin tytärtä ja Papin rouvaa tarkastellaan myös intertekstuaalisesta näkökulmasta käsin. Papin tytär ja Papin rouva sijoittuvat murroskohtaan realismin aikakauden kehitysromaaniperinteessä. 1800-luvun lopussa suoraviivaisesti aikuisuuteen ja oman paikan löytymiseen etenevä kehitystarina alkoi väistyä toisenlaisen totuuden tieltä. Eheän identiteetin sijaan Ellille muotoutuu hajanainen, ristiriitojen repimä minuus.
