Full textBy studying the 15 economic groups listed in the index of the Mexican Stock Exchange as well as their business leaders, this work questions the evolution of capitalism in Mexico in the 21st century. Since the withdrawal of the State from the economy, the democratization of politics, the globalization of exchanges and mobilities, the financialization process and the rule of corporate governance, how has evolved the business community? Have the social and economic characteristics of business leaders changed ? Have the managers gained influence over the shareholders ? Have the business community become more international ? Is the financial expertise more valued than before? Do the elites circulate easily between public and private sectors ? Which financial, family and educative strategies have set up the major shareholder families in order to maintain control over capital and management of their businesses ? So many questions to which this thesis proposes to answer thanks to a biographic study of the 575 business leaders of 15 companies listed at the Mexican Stock Exchange from 2000 to 2015. The study of the academic and professional trajectories of business leaders, of their family genealogies and of their discourse allows us to understand the resources they are using today to access positions of power in the economic field. From a methodological point of view, this work relies on a series of interviews with top business leaders and the creation of a database processed through Multiple Correspondance Analysis (MCA), networks studies and dynamic cross tables

Full textBased on a year spent in Bissau, the capital city and in two villages of Tombali region, on interviews and analyses of all the available documentation including archives, this thesis examines the link between the stability of a society and the presence at its top of social agents being conscious to belong to the same “class” and defending common interests. In order to do this, the thesis recounts the constitution and history of the power bearers in Guinea-Bissau from the colonial era (to the most contemporary era). The arrival of the Portuguese explorers and merchants on the coast of Guinea leads to the transformation of the ancient institutions and existing sociopolitical constructs. These violent and radical social mutations go along with the emergence of a merchant bourgeoisie and a Luso-African body of civil servants. Some of them appear to be critical of the social colonial order. At the head of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), the latter develops a “counter society” in the liberated zones and wins the support of the people. After a long liberation war, the PAIGC’s leaders take the direction of the state. Unable to defend the unity and incarnate the “nation”, they tear each other apart and lose their credibility. At the beginning of the 1990’s, they initiate a process of political liberalization of the country, putting an end to “monocracy”. If the establishment of a multiparty system does not guaranty democracy, the leaders have an utter will for the country to enter into a modernization process. However, very soon, the leaders return to traditional operating rules and values. The formalization of political power control, notably for the army, can not stand the test of time and political changeovers. The coups d’état come one after another and each time give power to omnipotent personalities. The promised “political revolution” does not succeed in ending the crisis of the country, which seems even being bogged down. So, this thesis shows that the nature of the political regime does not matter, since only the existence of a “ruling class” able to organize its own reproduction can guaranty the smooth functioning of a country

Full textThis research inscribes itself in the fields of political and social history, but it also used the tools of sociology, anthropology and political science. Its overall objective is to analyze formation and recruitment of Argentinean political elites during the period opened by the return of democracy in 1983. The intention is to understand the characteristics and the scale of the process of political professionalization. The study focused on Mendoza province's case to understand the specific aspects of provincial political life. Thorough the analysis of biographies and collectives paths, social profiles and recruitment patterns, relational and political practices, the main theme of this research is to understand the configuration of political power in Argentina. The study was developed in three parts or dimensions. The first part analyzes the production context of collective biographies, the group's characteristics and socialization milieu. The second part concerns the horizontal dimension of politics and it focuses on the relations of politicians with lobbies or corporations. The third part reconstructs the vertical dimension of politics, that is to say, its presence in geographical space and the hierarchical relationships within political groups. By comparing these dimensions, it has been possible to draw an image of the formation of political elites and their working in a moment of historical change such as the return of democracy in 1983

Full textThe development of the third-world will not be realized till the politicians, administrators and intellectuals attempt to coordinate their efforts in order to acquire the dimensions of development : time, space, energy, matter, and to acquire modern methods of management : the rational and experimental. The coordination of efforts between the different actors does not exist in the third-world. It cannot exist because each actor plays a particular role according to this conception. The intellectuals can be considered as the best demonstration of this fact. They do not play a concrete role in the development because of their lack of reality. This lack of reality, which is a collective realization is managed by foreign intellectuals and the intellectuals af the third-world. The former realize the conscience of the latter. The intellectuals of the third-world, doted on the conscience are going to spread out by different ways their lack of reality on the society

Full textThis doctoral dissertation examines the career of managers in an international context. Specifically, this research focuses on careers patterns in a changing environment using the case of international managers (i.e. managers with a career that develops globally). More broadly, the research looks at the evolving nature of managerial careers, the organizational and global environments in which careers develop, and the reciprocal relationship between changing careers and changing environments, specifically in the context of those with global careers. All these aspects are explored in this doctoral dissertation with three research articles that use three different sets of empirical data.The first article analyzes the career profiles of top European managers in the context of increased internationalization. Data on profiles and careers of more than 900 top managers in four countries has been collected and analyzed. The purpose is to verify the hypothesis of stability in national career models and identify new elements related to internationalization. The second article focuses on the profiles of top managers at the biggest Swisscompanies. We focused on the evolution of profiles and careers of about 600 topmanagers over a 30-years period (1980–2010). This article highlights the development of an international community of foreign top managers in Switzerland and analyzes the changes in their profiles and careers.The third article focuses on the cross-cultural adjustment of a population of 152foreign employees (traditionally-assigned expatriates, self-initiated expatriates, skilled migrants) and 126 spouses. This article studies different aspects of adjustment, focusing on local language proficiency and relocation support practices

Full textThis is a study of two political élites, i. E. Those who were eponymous archon in Delphi or federal strategos in Thessaly, from the beginning of the 1st c. BC to the IIIrd c. AD. First, we focus upon the institutional background of both communities. Thessaly is a confederation of cities with a voting system based on personnal wealth, as planned by Rome itself. The federal law on manumissions proves that the city members of the koinon were given a certain autonomy within this organisation. Delphi was a civitas libera, and, as such, was allowed by Rome to use his ancestral laws and a democratic regime during all the IInd c. BC, but the events of the 1st c. BC turned it into a "gouvernement des notables". Then, we propose a chronological filing of the Thessalian strategoi, from Caesar onwards, and some corrections and additions to the Delphic chronology. We studied, in a last part, social and family behaviors of both political élites, via the genealogical reconstructions fo fifteen families. Very early, Thessalian families got used to forging alliances with other family in their very city of with close ones ; few of those families wanted to become Roman citizens. Families of Delphi stuck to a strict endogamy until the middle of the 1st c. AD, when the Amphictionic élite were granted, at the same time, Roman and Delphian citizenship and renewed the population of Delphi. The creation of the Panhellenion in Athens put an end to the power of attraction of the city of Apollo
