Abstract:
As part of a scientific support programme, physiological monitoring has the potential to enhance knowledge and understanding of the development of elite young athletes in order to optimize their present and future sporting performance. However, the ethics of physiological testing of minors and the development of individualized, reliable, valid, and sport-specific physiological monitoring programmes are challenging. For example, the assessment of body composition, muscle strength, and anaerobic and aerobic fitness in sport-specific contexts and environments is complex. A plethora of laboratory and field tests have been developed to monitor young athletes. However, adequate interpretation of elite performance in youth can only be accomplished by procedures that satisfy rigorous criteria. Clear understanding of the merits and limitations of physiological tests is required for the development of appropriate scientist-coach-young athlete relationships.

Abstract:
Members of the athlete medical/sport science support team must be confident that athletes are benefitting from treatment, and that they are not victims of medical mismanagement. Athletes must not be treated differently to any other patient in society. This chapter discusses why protection of the child athlete is necessary, and how child athletes can be subjected to psychological abuse, which may form the gateway to other types of abuse. These can include physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect, all of which are prevalent in all sports and at all levels. It also covers particularly vulnerable groups of child athletes, including the elite, the disabled, and the LGB (lesbian, gay, bisexual) athlete populations. It covers the many sport organizations working in the field of child athlete protection, as well as the existing statutes governing the rights and freedoms of children in sport.

Abstract:
As athletes invest their time and energy into sport and it becomes a meaningful part of their self-concept they simultaneously develop an athletic identity. This chapter discusses psychological and sociological research on athletic identity development. One robust finding throughout the literature is that often athletes see themselves as athletes more strongly than the public does. The public’s reluctance to acknowledge that athletes with disabilities are real athletes reflects how disability sport is often marginalized. Research shows that sometimes former able-bodied athletes decline to participate in disability sport or seek out a sport different from the one they engaged in when able-bodied. Some athletes claim to be elite disability sport athletes in order to have an “elite” athletic identity. Other athletes with disabilities do not acknowledge disability sport and embrace an elite athlete identity. Within this context, the chapter incorporates relevant theory and psychological processes to identify plausible mechanisms underlying athletes’ decisions about whether to participate in sport and what to call themselves when they do.

Abstract:
Athletic activity was a major preoccupation of the Greek elite in the imperial period. This chapter looks at the relationship between athletic and intellectual activity, focusing especially on the way in which athletic skill could in itself be presented as a form of paideia. It looks first at day-to-day training in the gymnasium, focusing particularly on the use of athletics in the education of young men of the Greek elite and on the expertise of the athletic trainers. It then turns to the athletic contests which flourished at festivals across the Mediterranean world. Finally, it looks at a series of attempts by imperial Greek authors to redefine athletic training in line with their own intellectual priorities, using Plutarch’s Precepts of Healthcare as a case study for that wider phenomenon.
