Full textHistorically, Senegalese Quranic schools (Daaras) are predominantly rural. Environmental degradation and the collapse of agricultural policies have impoverished the peasant world and caused the schools to move to the cities. Ideologically, a parent entrusts his child, the student (Talibé) to a Koranic teacher (Marabout). The latter has unconditional authority over the child who must live humbly and submit to harsh discipline. This koranic interpretation added to the value of the alms (Zakât) legitimizes the begging of the Talibés. It becomes very urban from the discovery by the Koranic teachers of a supply of urban monetary alms. This market of urban alms, religious gift, offering, sacrifice, results from a large offer of alms from townspeople to monetarized social relations; and to religiosities including more broadly the dimension of the material gift. The thesis explores this market dimension of the gift. It is based on the assumption that the begging of the Talibés results from this offer of alms to which a demand has been adjusted. We retrace a migratory process superimposing 4 logical: A symbolic and intangible gift 1, that a parent gives his child to a Koranic teacher; a material and temporary gift 2, in the form of a land loan, which connects a donor who owns land in the city of a house under construction or a piece of land, and a Quranic master who has made a home in search of accommodation for his Talibés; a material donation 3, where city dwellers take care of the primary needs of children. And finally a purely monetary gift 4, where by the obligation of the child to bring a sum of money daily to the Quranic master (Sass), the Marabout designates him as intermediary-beggar. This last logic crystallizes much more the stakes of infant begging. A second system of institutional donation is superimposed on this first, religious. It is the mobilization of means by the civil society and the State, to eradicate the problem. This parallel market of humanitarian aid, beyond considerations of the many concrete aid actions it produces, can also sometimes be co-constructed with the market of religious alms. This is where a donation 5 comes which is international aid to the organizations fighting against this begging; and a gift 6 constituted by the help of these agencies to Koranic schools. By analyzing a model of the dismantling of Koranic schools by these organizations that finance a return to agriculture of Koranic masters for example, we realize very quickly that the gift 6 can pervert the gift 1 initially disinterested materially, a parent who entrusts his child symbolically: a dimension of trafficking and exploitation of children tends to supplant the educational one. This research was conducted in four towns and six villages between Senegal and Guinea-Bissau. A questionnaire survey was conducted among begging children; the qualitative approach was favored for rural actors and adult respondents. The thesis shows globally that the non-resolution of the problem results from different strategies of the actors concerned who tend to feed it (voluntarily and involuntarily) and maintain two systems of donation that self-regulate. This systemic analysis seems much more relevant than the linear causal ones, which reduce the phenomenon of several of its immersed dimensions: A gender and demographic given the condition of the rural woman and the high birth rates; an agricultural and environmental crisis that imposes group survival logics; as well as a reluctance of the state to eradicate the problem, between international injunctions, budget impotence and electoral considerations vis-à-vis the Muslim powers

Full textThe study is part of the assessment of enviromental education in the Senegalese formal educational system. It is based particularly on the current family socio-economic program, which, like life and land sciences and geography, prentends to do to environmental education through the themes conducted in class. The current research, aims, on the one hand, from the class attended by the pupils (6th, 5th, 3rd forms), and their environment (urban, suburban, rural), to describe, from investigation questionnaires, their social determinant and their perceptions of the context of class, the method used by the teacher and motivation generated, during the conduct of the course in environmental education. On the other hand, the study assesses the performances of pupils, following the level of class attended, from tests derived from the achievements of pupils. The measure of changes to the perceptions and performance in environmental education, compared to class groups, has enable us to compare the averages for pupils of different groups of classes according to the middle of inclusion, has the support of the analysis by the test of Bonferroni of Schiffer. The tests of PEARSON enabled us to control the correlation between perceptions en performance in environmental education, for different involved groups and draw the educational, instructional and methodological conclusions. Thus, 1986 pupils attending grammar school toof part in the investigations. The data processing has allowed us to highlight the growing gap between the perceptions and performance in environmental education and this for all the forms considered. Beyong the reponses to the assumptions of research, the urgency of a coherent decision making in the field of environmental education for sustainable development has been demonstrated by coming up with a teacher training program closely connected to the objectives of environmental education and especially contred on the learner's social integration

Full textSickle cell disease, a hereditary chronic and disabling illness, severely affects the lives of millions of people. It is characterized by anemia, frequent infections, and painful crises. Sixty-six percent of the 120 million people affected worldwide live in Africa (WHO, 2022). This thesis, conducted with four hundred students with sickle cell disease in Senegal, their parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals, aims to understand the quality of life in school, family, and hospital settings for individuals suffering from sickle cell disease, and to propose solutions for better support. A mixed approach (questionnaires and interviews) is used to analyze the progress and challenges to their inclusion, taking ethical considerations into account. The results reveal a limited understanding of sickle cell disease by those affected, as well as inappropriate family and school practices. Despite some progress over the past decade with various initiatives to promote the inclusion of those affected, identified factors (age, sex, ethnic origin, etc.) and diversity of material circumstance increase the challenges any ecosystemic approach must address multiple forms of discrimination, barriers to schooling, numerous absences, and exam failures (25%). The physical violence experienced by 69 % of students, the high dropout rate (26% among 13- to 18-year-olds), the high cost of medical care, and low health literacy continue to negatively impact their quality of life. The primary value of this research lies in its significant contribution to understanding the schooling of sick children in Senegal by examining the interactions between school, family, and hospital environments. Based on the findings, the thesis proposes recommendations to improve social and educational inclusivity

Full textThe aim of our study is the elaboration of a sequence of teaching and training of the concept of potential energy. A didactic, historical and epistemological study of this concept shows the potential energy a latent energy due to forces of interactions which develop between the elements constituting a system. The option which is made here is to introduce the concept of potential energy starting from two types of activity: activities which refer to the latent character potential energy and activities relative to its character of interaction. The sequence was tried out three times in two years, in three different classes. The results obtained are very interesting. We succeeded in leading pupils who could not admit the existence of energy in an inert system, to make evolve their point of view gradually until accepting it

Full textOur thesis focuses on the place of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in school-based AIDS prevention, using the example of Family Life Education Clubs (NFE). secondary and secondary schools in Senegal. We wanted to show that the introduction of ICTs in health promotion partly overcomes the limitations of the traditional prevention campaigns that are being promoted, and whose quintessence of information is difficult to reach the population. Thus, our intention is to reveal how actions led by the non-governmental organization (NGO), called the Population Education and Study Group (GEEP), under the aegis of the Ministry of National Education of Senegal, help raise awareness and empower young people with a knowledge gap in the field of sexuality. Thus we intend to respond to the scientific concern about how the use of ICTs by pupils can contribute to their empowerment in teaching. We conducted interviews with GEEP members and its partners, which are supplemented by information collected by questionnaire from college and high school students who are members of the EVF clubs. A comprehensive approach has allowed us to document the ICT practices of students and to understand how actors perceive the use of ICTs in sexual health promotion. Our research has highlighted several benefits of using ICTs, but also limitations related to access. We were able to show that the introduction of ICTs in AIDS prevention appears to be a pedagogical innovation for teachers, at the same time as it helps to broaden the learning audience, through the strong appeal that these ICTs have for young people. The click info ado system, a digital medium for information on the issues studied, has enabled collaborative work and networking between the Ministry of Education and the partners of the EVF clubs. These initiatives have improved the behaviour and risk attitudes of young people through their appropriation of messages on various topics related to sexuality such as early or unwanted pregnancies, clandestine abortions, infanticides, sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS, etc. They are largely supported by the autonomy acquired by students who connect to the platforms on their initiative with full responsibility, to open up more and more to the taboo subject of sexuality in Senegalese environments. ICTs in Teaching-learning aims to improve the skills to be acquired in various disciplines whose use can be considered as a support in learning strategies for the benefit of the school curriculum and even in learning citizenship. However, these successes do not conceal the limits of an educational strategy characterized by a lack of computer equipment, very limited maintenance and unstable access to the Internet connection. The future of AIDS prevention in juvenile settings then depends on a massive investment in ICTs, and a widespread use of them in Senegal

Full textThe researches on the process of acquisition and development of reading and writing skills agree on the idea that these are implemented by the pupils’ continuous contact and exposure to texts and discursive genres. This theory finds a particular echo when it comes to narrative fiction based on a conventional and recurring generic and textual structure, whose treatment of which should be facilitated by the activation of prior learning. It would be interesting to know where this prior knowledge comes from. The answer to this question brings us to examine the characteristics of the joint didactic action. Thus we focus on three forms of mediation: the pupils’ educational culture in and outside school, the textual and the teacher mediation. This choice finds its justification in the context of our research which concerns first and forth year students of a Senegalese secondary school. In this context, the acquisition of the reading and the writing is made in school and in French; official language, teaching language, but also and especially, second language. In order to analyze the combined effects of these semiotic mediations we use a corpus constituted by two types of data. On the one hand, we have at our disposal video recordings of sessions of learning organized around didactical activities openly directed to the development of narrative competences in the pupils. On the other hand, we have collected written productions of these students before and after the didactical sequence concerning the teaching of narrative fiction. Through a multifaceted approach, we describe how the co-action between the professor and the pupils around model texts explains the performances of the latter ones when they are placed in situation of autonomous production. Our approach allowed us to demonstrate that we can explain the effectiveness of the teaching act by the correlation of three variables. Firstly, a systematic teaching of an object of knowledge measured by their level of concentration in the action learning. Secondly, we have the organization system of the participation of the students, prepared in advance to play their role in the co-construction of the knowledge. Finally, we underline the importance of the shoring up of their actions through strategies centred on the procedural and pragmatic knowledge
