Gould, JS, WL McCaw, NP Cheney, PF Ellis, and S. Matthews. Field Guide: Fire in Dry Eucalypt Forest. CSIRO Publishing, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643101289.

Full text
Abstract:
An effective response to bushfires relies on accurate predictions of fire behaviour, particularly the rate of spread, intensity and ‘spotting’. This field guide has been developed to provide a systematic method for assessing fuel hazard and predicting potential fire behaviour in dry eucalypt forest. It will assist in making vital decisions that ensure the protection of fire crews and the community. This guide integrates Project Vesta research findings with the Victorian Overall Fuel Hazard Guide and is applicable to dry eucalypt forests throughout southern Australia. Fuel assessment is based on the hazard scoring system employed during Project Vesta which investigated the effects of fuel age and understorey vegetation structure on fire behaviour in these forests. Information provided in this guide can be used to: Define and identify different fuel layers and components of fuel structure and hazard; Determine the hazard score of surface and near-surface fuel layers and the height of the near-surface fuel for fire spread prediction; Determine elevated fuel height for flame height prediction; and determine surface fuel hazard score and bark hazard score for spotting distance prediction. The Field Guide provides tables to predict the potential rate of spread of a bushfire burning in dry eucalypt forest under summer conditions, and can also be used to predict flame height and maximum spotting distance. The guide also allows users to determine the moisture content of fine dead fuels throughout the day, and to account for the effect of slope on the rate of spread of a fire.

Wilsey, Brian J. Response of Grasslands to Global Change. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198744511.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
Global change factors are ecologically-relevant variables that are changing, and that have global impacts. In grasslands, changes in the atmosphere, biological invasions, N deposition, and land-use change are global change factors. Photosynthesis increases under elevated CO2 and C3 plant species respond more strongly than C4 species to CO2 enrichment. Leaf N contents are typically lower under elevated CO2, especially in C3 species, and this is expected to have a negative effect on large grazing mammals. Temperature increases are expected to have significant effects on phenology. Most grasslands are being impacted by biological invasions to various degrees. Communities dominated by exotics are considered to be “novel systems” because they contain species from a variety of regions that do not have an evolutionary history of interaction. Among the most noxious grassland invaders is the red imported fire ant Solonopsis invicta, which lowers ant diversity and negatively affects prey species.

Morton, Lindsay M., Sharon A. Savage, and Smita Bhatia. Multiple Primary Cancers. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190238667.003.0060.

Full text
Abstract:
As prognosis following a cancer diagnosis has improved and survival has increased, so has the occurrence of multiple primary cancers diagnosed in the same individual. In the United States, one in five cancer diagnoses involves an individual with a previous history of cancer. These new primary cancer diagnoses, or “subsequent neoplasms” (SN), are a substantial cause of morbidity and mortality in cancer survivors. The risk of developing SN varies substantially depending on age, the type of initial primary cancer, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, genetic susceptibility, and exposure to other cancer risk factors. Childhood cancer survivors have particularly elevated SN risks associated with radiotherapy and, to a lesser extent, systemic therapy. Genetic susceptibility to cancer is also thought to play an important role in SN development after childhood cancer. Survivors of many adulthood cancers also have elevated SN risks, likely with a multifactorial etiology.

Douglas, A. E. Cicero: Tusculan Disputations II and V. Liverpool University Press, 1989. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9780856684333.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The Fifth Tusculan Disputation is the finest of the five books, its nearest rival being the First. The middle three books, represented in this edition by the Second, are, as the author clearly intended, less elevated, though still showing Cicero's flair for elegant and lively exposition, and providing much valuable information about the teaching of the main Hellenistic philosophical schools, especially the Stoics. They argue that the perfect human life, or complete human well-being, that of the 'wise man', is unaffected by physical and mental distress or extremes of emotion. Against this background, the Fifth puts the positive, mainly Stoic, case that virtue, moral goodness, is alone and of itself sufficient. The book presents Latin text with facing-page English translation, introduction and commentary.

Abstract:
Diagnosis of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) is based on clinical features such as subacute progress of symmetrical weakness of proximal muscle and muscle fatigue, in combination with laboratory confirmation of myopathy, including elevated muscle enzyme levels in serum and histological demonstration of skeletal muscle inflammation, as well as fibre regeneration and degeneration in muscle biopsies. Several classification criteria for IIM have historically been proposed. New classification criteria for IIM have been developed, and are based on real patient data from adult and juvenile IIM cases worldwide. These criteria provide a probability of having IIM with defined cut-off values for categorizing ‘possible’, ‘probable’, and ‘definite’ IIM. Autoantibodies in IIM are becoming increasingly important for diagnosis and classification, and newly identified autoantibodies specific for inclusion body myositis may provide a future diagnostic tool.

Abstract:
Fleeting political defeats could not blunt the rising power of Texas’s evangelical activists, and clerics’ cloistered denominational worlds sustained their efforts through all of the bitter political battles over prohibition and other moral reforms during the early twentieth century. Shielded from the stormy winds of politics and the public’s anticlericalism, the clerical culture nourished new generations with the gospel of politics and southern religious leaders pushed triumphantly into public life behind the issue of prohibition. Aggressive religious leaders such as J. Frank Norris and Robert Shuler outmaneuvered hostile politicians, including Governor James Ferguson, and elevated Morris Sheppard, the “father of national prohibition” and a firm champion of Christian nationalism, to the U.S. Senate. By the time the United States entered World War I, clerics were well-positioned to implement the Eighteenth Amendment, allowing for the national prohibition of alcohol.

Padmakumar, Anand D., and Mark C. Bellamy. Pathophysiology and causes of jaundice in the critically ill. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199600830.003.0192.

Full text
Abstract:
Critically-ill patients develop jaundice for a variety of reasons. A good understanding of bilirubin metabolism can help the clinician to diagnose and treat jaundice. Intensive care unit (ICU) physicians commonly encounter elevated serum bilirubin in severely-ill patients, which can be associated with increased morbidity and mortality. A complex interaction of enzymatic pathways leads to safe excretion of bilirubin. This fine homeostasis is often disturbed and leads jaundice, which can be broadly classified into three main categories—prehepatic, hepatic, and post-hepatic. Common examples include sepsis, cardiac failure, drug toxicity, hepatic ischaemia, gall stone disease, etc. Management strategies directed towards the underlying causes aim to improve outcome. The aetiology can be often multifactorial and difficult to treat. This chapter provides a brief overview of bilirubin metabolism and aetiopathogenesis of jaundice. We also provide key recommendations to develop a systematic diagnostic approach, provide guidance on ordering appropriate investigations and on interpreting their results.

Full text
Abstract:
Renal cancers in adults are classified into two major groups according to the anatomic subsite of origin. The predominant group, originating from the renal parenchyma, is mostly renal cell carcinoma, which, in turn, is further classified into morphologically, clinically, and genetically distinct subtypes. Over 75% of renal cell carcinomas are designated clear cell, which is closely linked to alterations in the VHL gene. Almost all cancers arising from the renal pelvis and ureter are urothelial carcinomas, previously known as transitional cell carcinomas. Renal cell cancer incidence rates have increased globally over the past few decades. In the United States, incidence rates among blacks have surpassed rates for whites. Modifiable risk factors such as cigarette smoking, obesity, and hypertension, are more common among blacks than whites, partly explaining the racial disparity in renal cell cancer incidence. Having a first-degree relative with kidney cancer also has been linked to a two- to five-fold elevated risk.

Full text
Abstract:
Koffman, Macdonald & Atkins’ Law of Contract provides a clear, academically rigorous, account of the contract law which is written in a style which makes it highly accessible to university students new to legal study. It works from extensive consideration of the significant cases, to provide students with a firm grounding in the way the common law functions. There are chapters on formation, certainty, consideration, promissory estoppel, intention to create legal relations, express and implied terms, classification of terms, exemption clauses, the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977, unfair terms in consumer contracts, mistake, misrepresentation, duress and undue influence, illegality, unconscionability, privity, performance and breach, frustration, damages, and specific enforcement, as well as companion website chapters on capacity and an outline of the law of restitution. Recent cases which are of particular note in this, the tenth edition, include the Supreme Court cases of: Wells v Devani (2019) on interpretation and implied terms, Pakistan International Airlines Corporation v Times Travel (UK) Limited (2021) on lawful act economic duress, Morris- Garner v One-Step (Support) Ltd (2019) and Triple Point Technology Inc v PTT Public Company Ltd (2021) on the law of damages, and Tillman v Egon Zehnder (2019) on illegality and severance, re-affirmed in the Court of Appeal ruling in Quantum Actuarial LLP v Quantum Advisory Ltd (2021). Further important Court of Appeal decisions include: TRW v Panasonic (2021) on ‘battle of the forms’, Ark Shipping v Silverburn Shipping (2019) on classification of terms, FSHC Holdings v GLAS Trust (2019) on the equitable remedy of rectification, considered within the chapter on the doctrine of mistake, and Classic Maritime Inc v Limbungan Makmur (2019) on the interpretation of force majeure clauses and the scope of the doctrine of frustration, issues which rapidly elevated in significance leading up to Brexit and upon the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Notable first instance decisions which have tested frustration in light of these events include Canary Wharf (BP4) T1 Ltd and others v European Medicines Agency (2019) in the context of Brexit, and Salam Air SAOC v Latam Airlines Group SA (2020) on the impact of Covid-19. Additional High Court rulings considered within this edition include Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Saeed Bin Shakhboot Al Nehayan v Ioannis Kent (2018) and Bates v Post Office Ltd (2019) on good faith, and Neocleous v Rees (2019) on electronic signatures coupled with the findings of the Law Commission Report on Electronic Execution of Documents (2019) Law Com No 386.
