Full textThis work deals with the relations between the changes in the Eleusinian figuration of the Athenian red-figure vases in the fourth-century B.C. and the social changes related to the fifth-century Peloponnesian War. Our departure point lay in the proposition made by Henri Metzger that the changes identified in the images of the Eleusinian Mysteries are strictly connected with the social, religious, political e economic changes of the fourth-century Athens. This text is divided into theoretical-methodological questions about the analysis and interpretation of the images on vases; the comprehension of the Mysteries itself; the social, economical, political and religious contextualization of fourth-century Athens and finally the interpretation and analysis of the Eleusinian images.

Full textThe goosegrass (Eleusine spp.) is an annual plant, found in agricultural crops in Rio Grande do Sul (RS), where has been control failures in response to glyphosate application, suggesting the resistance of the species to this herbicide. The objectives of this research were to identify the occurrence of resistance of goosegrass to glyphosate in RS, determine the LD50 and GR50, identify the mechanism of resistance, evaluate the factors involved in the observed control failures, and propose alternatives to chemical control to these biotypes. Thus, plant seeds of failures herbicide control, suspected of resistance, were collected in eight cyties soybean producers in RS, and used in the experiments. The results showed that all the plants from seeds collected has been controlled by glyphosate when applied at a rate of 2160 g a.e. ha-1. The biotype 12.3, from Boa Vista do Incra, show a low level resistance to glyphosate, with resistance factor (RF) of 1.17, according to LD50, and the mechanism that confers resistance is not due to the metabolism of glyphosate by cyt-P450 complex, or herbicide absorption. The suspected resistant biotypes have lower control when glyphosate is sprayed in advanced stages of growth, as one or two tillers, that may be the cause of control failures observed in crop area. The ACCase inhibiting herbicides (clethodim and fluazifop-p-butyl) and amonium-glufosinate efficiently control these biotypes, at four leaves to a one tiller stage, being an alternative to chemical control of this weed.

Crops are subject to live with spontaneous plants that may in certain situations reduce their genetic potential of production, causing losses. Most of the time, due to the practicality and cost, these plants are controlled by the application of herbicides, what is called chemical control. Among the products for this control, there is glyphosate, which in recent years has been used repetitively due to the almost exclusive presence of crops tolerant to this herbicide, such as soybean, cotton and corn. The use of this herbicide has been selecting, therefore in the last years plants that present adaptations to resist its application, among them Italian ryegrass and goosegrass. The resistance can be caused by different mechanisms, involving or not the target enzyme of action of the herbicide. For glyphosate, this enzyme is 5-enolpyruvyl-silicon-3-phosphate and it may present single or double mutations. These mutations, in addition to affecting the tolerance of the plant to the herbicide, can modify the physiology and metabolism of the species, making it more or less ecologically adapted, which is called fitness. The objective of this work was to study the impacts of glyphosate resistance on the two species mentioned above. In a first work, glyphosate resistant Italian ryegrass plants were compared to susceptible plants for their metabolic and protein profile before and after herbicide application. Susceptible plants showed higher levels of amino acids produced from the shikimic acid route and lower levels of glyphosate in their leaves 72 hours after the application of the herbicide. It was observed that the susceptible plants presented greater development, proteins linked to the greater ryegrass physiology expressed and differential expression of proteins bound to vegetal defense against stresses, absent in resistant plants. After the application of the herbicide, the susceptible plants died, and the resistant ones continued their normal physiology and start expressing the EPSPS synthase enzyme, being this one of the mechanisms of resistance found for the species. In a second work, the impacts of resistance to glyphosate, caused by single or double mutations in goosegrass and its effects on soybean crop, were evaluated in two experiments. The development and fecundity of goosegrass is little affected by simple mutation at position 106 of the EPSPS enzyme in the absence of glyphosate. On the other hand, the double mutation of the enzyme at positions 102 and 106, generates high costs in the development and reproduction of plants. When the herbicide is applied, the situation reverses. Plants with the presence of a mutation begin to present phytointoxication with the herbicide. When living with soybeans, in the absence of the herbicide, the culture is most affected by the coexistence with the susceptible genotypes and genotype with a single mutation. In the presence of the herbicide, under the conditions observed, the interference of goosegrass plants was reduced.

Full textThe Eleusinian Mysteries are one of the most prestigious panhellenic cults in the Ancient World. After the roman conquest of Greece, the benefits and privileges to the cult initiations were also spread to the citizens of all Roman Mediterranean. So, being inspiration to the intellectual elite and even to emperors like Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius, the cult at Eleusis became fundamental to the reorganization of the greek society and identity of the greeks during the Roman Imperial Period. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the built space of the Eleusinian Sanctuaries in integrated way, from Eleusis to the City Eleusinion in the Athenian Agora, during the Roman Period (Second Century A.D.), seeking to understand the socio-cultural impact of the roman presence to the Eleusinian Mysteries and to the society reorganized around its sanctuary. Moreover, this dissertation seeks to prepare an interpretative schema to the transformation of the sacred spaces related to the Eleusinian cult as well to comprehend the dynamics and particularities of interactions within the Eleusinian landscape

Full textA research was carried out with the aim of evaluating the effects of anticipated fertilization on the production of Eleusine coracana dry matter as well as it productive features. In addition to it, the physiological quality of the seeds and the culture yield were also evaluated, taking into account the hypothesis that soybean yield is not reduced due to the anticipated base fertilization of the finger millet culture. The experiment was conducted at the Estação Experimental Anhembi, Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (USP/ESALQ), in Piracicaba/SP, during the growing seasons of 2001/2002, 2002/2003 and 2003/2004, in an Oxisol. The fertilization consisted on the application of 90 kg of P2O5 ha-1, 50 kg of K2O ha-1 and micronutrients (Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo and Zn). The experiment adopted a completely randomized blocks design with three repetitions and twelve treatments, which comprehended different levels of anticipated soybean fertilization for the culture of finger millet, as it follows: T1= without fertilization ; T2= traditional soybean fertilization; T3= anticipation of 50% of K on finger millet; T4= anticipation of 100% of K, on finger millet; T5= anticipation of 50% of P on finger millet; T6= anticipation of 50% of K and P on finger millet; T7= anticipation of 50% of P and 100% of K on finger millet; T8= anticipation of 100% of P on finger millet; T9= anticipation of 100% of P and 50% of K on finger millet; T10 = anticipation of 100% of P and K on finger millet; T11 = anticipation of 50% of K on finger millet; T11 = anticipation of 100% of P and K + micronutrients on finger millet; T12 = anticipation of foliar fertilization with micronutrients on finger millet. The evaluated characteristics were: a) finger millet: dry matter production; b) soybean: final stand, final plant height, lodging, number of branches per plant, number of empty pods per plant, number of pods with 3 cavities with 3, 2 and 1 seed, number of pods with 2 cavities with 2 and 1 seed, number of pods with 1 cavity and 1 seed, total number of pods per plant, seed weight per plant, mass of 1,000 seeds and total yield. Soybean seeds were submitted to germination tests, accelerated ageing tests and well as tests of sand emergency. It was concluded that: a) Phosphorus and potassium anticipated fertilization on soybean applied to the Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn. crop can increase the finger millet dry matter yield; b) The absence of fertilization on the soybean no-tillage yield system succeeding the finger millet cover culture can cause the decrease of total yield of finger millet dry matter and soybean seeds; c) The anticipation of base fertilization of soybean culture for finger millet does not interfere with the total amount of pods generated by soybean plants; and d) Phosphorus and potassium anticipated fertilization on soybean culture for finger millet crop do not interfere with the mass of 1,000 seeds and total soybean yield.

Full textThis research was to evaluate the effect of the anticipation of soybean fertilization on dry matter production and extraction of nutrients by finger millet (Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn.) and on dry matter accumulation and exportation of nutrients by soybean seed cultivated in sequence, in a no-till system. The experiment was carried out at the experimental fields of Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz" (USP/ESALQ), in Piracicaba-SP, during the growing season of 2001/2002, in an Oxisol. The cultivar used was BRS-133. The soybean fertilization, according to the official recommendation to the state of São Paulo, consisted in the application of 90 kg of P2O5 ha -1, 50 kg of K2O ha -1 and of micronutrients (Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo and Zn). The treatments consisted of levels of anticipation of the soybean fertilization to the finger millet crop (T1: 0%; T2: 50% of P; T3: 50% of K; T4: 100% of P; T5: 100% of K; T6: 50% of P and K; T7: 100% of P and 50% of K; T8: 50% of P and 100 % of K; T9: 100% of P and K; T10: micronutrients; T11: 100% of P and K + micronutrients; T12: controle), totaling 12 treatments, designing a complete randomized blocks with three replications. The evaluated characteristics were: dry matter production, concentration and nutrients accumulation at biomass of finger millet; dry matter accumulation, nutrients concentration and accumulation in soybean seed. The main conclusions are: a) in reference to the dry matter production, Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn. is a recommended specie to obtain plant residues in no-till systems, since it is growing on medium to high fertility soils; b) considering the nutrients accumulation in dry matter, it is verified that Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn. presents the following sequence of nutrient absorption: K > N > Ca > Mg > S > P >> Mn > Fe > Zn > Cu; c) the anticipation of the soybean fertilization to the Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn. sowing do not decrease dry matter accumulation nether interferes with the nutrients exportation by soybean seed; d) dry matter production and phosphorus and calcium accumulation by Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn. increase in response of phosphorus anticipation from soybean fertilization.

Productivity of grain crops is highly sensitive to changing climates and crop management practices. Response of finger millet [Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn.] to high temperature stress, and intensive management practices such as increased seeding rates and fertilizer application are not clearly understood. The objectives of this research were to determine the effects of (a) season-long, and short episodes of high temperature stress on growth and yield traits of finger millet, (b) seeding rates and nitrogen fertilizer application rates on grain and biomass yield, and (c) to evaluate the finger millet minicore collection for high grain and biomass yield. Controlled environment studies were conducted to determine the effects of high temperature stress on physiological, growth and yield traits. Field studies were conducted in Manhattan and Hays (Kansas) and Alupe (Kenya) to determine the effects of seeding and nitrogen fertilizer rates on growth and yield traits. Finger millet minicore collection was evaluated under field conditions in India, for phenology, growth and yield traits. Season long high temperature stress of 36/26 or 38/28°C compared to 32/22°C decreased panicle emergence, number of seeds per panicle, grain yield and harvest index. Finger millet was most sensitive to short episodes (10 d) of high temperature (40/30°C) during booting, panicle emergence and flowering stages, resulting in lower number of seeds, and grain yield. Finger millet responded to the interaction between environmental (locations) and temporal (years) factors. In general, locations with higher rainfall had greater grain and biomass yield than those with low rainfall. There was no influence of seeding rates (3.2 or 6.0 kg ha[superscript]-1) at Hays and Alupe. However, in one of the two years in Manhattan, higher seeding rate of 6.0 kg ha[superscript]-1 increased grain yield compared to 3.2 kg ha[superscript]-1. There was no influence of nitrogen rates (0, 30, 60 or 90 kg ha[superscript]-1) on grain or biomass yield at all three locations. However, higher fertilizer rates had greater percentage lodging. The finger millet minicore collection displayed large ranges for most quantitative traits including days to flowering, plant height, number of fingers panicle[superscript]-1, grain yield, biomass yield, and lodging; and had >60% heritability. Some of the genotypes from the minicore collection have the potential to increase grain and biomass yield and abiotic stress tolerance of finger millet.

Full textIn general, in Rio Grande do Sul, the control of weeds in crops genetically modified soybean and resistant to the herbicide Roundup Ready® (RR® soybeans) in no-tillage is performed with glyphosate. However, weeds escapes to the treatment can occur as is the case of goosegrass which is considered by soybean growers plant is difficult to control by glyphosate. In this context, this study aims to evaluate the best combination of herbicide to control goosegrass, combining herbicides applied pre-seeding and post-emergence RR® soybean in two stages of development of this weed (Chapter I). Further evaluate the response of a biotype of goosegrass coming from the municipality of Tupanciretã (RS) to the glyphosate herbicide (Chapter II). The experiment I (Chapter I) was conducted in 2012/2013 harvest in Argisoil Yellow-Red hapludox typical belonging to unit Tupanciretã mapping. The results of the experiment I showed that the paraquat + diuron (200 g i.a. ha-1) and ammonium glufosinate (400 g i.a. ha-1) herbicides are efficient alternatives to glyphosate aiming to desiccation of goosegrass in operation management in RR® soybean pre-seeding. Regardless of desiccant herbicide, the control of goosegrass is higher when the plants receive the application of glyphosate (712 g e.a. ha-1) in vegetative stage three to four tillers, and clethodim (96 g i.a. ha-1) and imazethapyr (106 g i.a. ha-1) herbicides did not satisfactorily control goosegrass in vegetative stage from three tillers in RR® soybeans. Grain yield is higher with the application of glyphosate compared to the clethodim and imazethapyr, when the target is goosegrass with plants in stage three to six tillers. The experiment II (Chapter II) was conducted in the greenhouse of the Department (UFSM), in plastic pots (5 L) containing three seedlings of goosegrass (two to three tillers) with suspected resistance to glyphosate. The treatments consisted of five concentrations of the product (0, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400% of the dose registry of glyphosate, which is 712 g e.a. ha-1). The results for the control evaluations and production of dry biomass showed that biotype of goosegrass is susceptible to glyphosate, once at the lowest dose registration (712 g e.a. ha-1) tested, the control was greater than 98%.

Full textThe present research evaluated soybean yield in a no-tillage system with previous potassium and phosphorus fertilization on the Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn. crop. The hypothesis was that soybean yield does not decrease due to previous fertilization on the Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn. (finger millet) crop. The experiment was carried out during the 2001/2002 growing season at the Estação Experimental Anhembi, Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (USP/ESALQ), in Piracicaba, São Paulo. The area is located at the right side bank of the Tietê river, at the beginning of the Barra Bonita Dam, between the coordinates 22º 45and 22º 50 latitude south, and 48º 00 and 45º 05 longitude west, in an Oxisol. The soybean fertilization was done according to the São Paulo State offical recommendation: 90 kg of P2O5 ha-1, 50 kg of K2O ha-1 and micronutrients (Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo and Zn). The experiment designed in randomized complete blocks, with three replicates. The treatment consisted of differents levels of soybean pre-fertilization, on the finger millet crop, totalizing 12 treatments: T1 = no fertilization; T2 = conventional fertilization, on Soybean; T3 = 50% of K, on finger millet; T4 = 100% of K, on finger millet; T5 = 50% of P, on finger millet; T6 = 50% of both P and K, on finger millet; T7 = 50% of P and 100 % of K, on finger millet; T8 = 100% of P, on finger millet; T9 = 100% of P and 50% of K, on finger millet; T10 = 100% of P and K, on finger millet; T11 = 100% of P and K + micronutrients, on finger millet; T12 = fertilization with micronutrients, on finger millet. The evaluated chacaracters were: a) finger millet: dry matter production; b) soybean: final stand, final plant height, percentage of plants with green stems, bending, number of branches per plant, number of empty pods, number of pods with 3 cavities with 3, 2 and 1 grain, number of pods with 2 cavities with 2 and 1 grain, number of pods with 1 cavity with 1 grain, total number of pods per plant, total number of grains per plant, grain weight per plant, mass of 1,000 grains and total yield. The main conclusions are: a) phosphorus and potassium pre-fertilization on soybean, totally or partial applied to the Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn. crop, can increase the finger millet dry matter yield; b) total or partial pre-fertilization of soybean phosphorus and potassium on Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn. crop, under experimental conditions tested, does not decrease the soybean yield; c) more studies about fertilization in agroecosystems should be encouraged.

Full textLately, in the areas of production of transgenic crops resistant to glyphosate failures in control of goosegrass has been reported frequently, probably by an intense using of glyphosate and consequent increasing in selection pressure of weeds resistant to glyphosate. For this reason this work was carried out in order to compare the susceptibility of four goosegrass populations to glyphosate in different stages of development, as well as studying the effectiveness of alternative herbicides to glyphosate in the control of such species in pre and post-emergence. It was also a goal of this work study biological aspects, such as growth, weed number produced by a plant and influence of mechanical scarification on the germination of the goosegrass. It was found that there are differences in the susceptibility of populations to glyphosate, in which EIR2 population from Primavera do Leste - MT was the one that required higher doses to be controlled, being characterized as a case of low-level resistance because of the maximum recommended dose is able to control all the populations studied. Herbicides the most suitable to control pre-emergence were flumioxazin, sulfentrazone, clomazone and trifluralin, with high levels of control were used a longer residual effect. The control of goosegrass in the early post-emergence (2-3 tillers) and the intermediate stage (6-8 tillers) was efficient with all the tested herbicides. In the most advanced stage (10 to 12 tillers) the herbicide sethoxydim did not control any of populations, was not were used suitable for plants with more than 6 tillers. Remarkable differences were identified between the control of populations with ACCase inhibitors. Other studies are necessary to confirm the resistance to these herbicides. The goosegrass showed high accumulation of total dry matter, being considered highly competitive. Some differences were found among the growth of the populations, with no relation to the differential susceptibility to glyphosate existing between them. The tillering began at 28 days after emergence (DAE), with a growth between of 42 to 63 DAE when the plants reached the apex of the leaf and dry matter accumulation, later entering senescence. The flowering started between 42 and 49 DAE and lasted until 63 DAE. A plant of Eleusine indica produced on average 45 000 seeds and there were no important differences between seed production among populations. Mechanical scarification of seeds accelerated the germination and increased the final germination populations of goosegrass. The mechanism that confers the physical dormancy of goosegrass seeds is related to the impermeability of the integument.

Goosegrass and smooth crabgrass are problematic weeds in bermudagrass and creeping bentgrass turf. Increased incidences of herbicide resistant weed populations and severe use restrictions on formerly available herbicides have increased need for selective, postemergence control options for these weeds in creeping bentgrass and bermudagrass turf. Although potentially injurious, topramezone (Pylex™) can control these weeds, especially goosegrass, at low doses. Low-dose Pylex™ may also improve bermudagrass and creeping bentgrass response. An initial investigation evaluating tembotrione (Laudis®), Pylex™, and mesotrione (Tenacity®) in different turfgrass species showed that Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue were highly tolerant to Pylex™ at rates ranging from 0.75 to 2.25 fl. oz./A, while creeping bentgrass and bermudagrass were low to moderately tolerant to Pylex™. Further investigation suggested that frequent, low-dose (less than 0.25 fl. oz./A) Pylex™ applications or metribuzin (Sencor®) admixtures could enhance weed control and may conserve turfgrass quality. A novel mixture of Pylex™ at 0.15 fl. oz./A and Sencor® at 4 oz. wt./A controlled goosegrass effectively and reduced bermudagrass injury to near acceptable levels and significantly less than Pylex™ applied alone at 0.25 fl. oz/A. In an attempt to further enhance bermudagrass tolerance to Pylex™, post-treatment irrigation was applied at different timings. When bermudagrass turf was irrigated at 15 or 30 minutes after herbicide treatment, bermudagrass injury was reduced to acceptable levels when following Pylex™ at 0.25 fl. oz./A plus Sencor® at 4 oz but not when following Pylex™ applied alone at 0.5 fl. oz./A. Goosegrass control was reduced significantly by post-treatment irrigation in all cases, while irrigation reduced goosegrass control by low-dose Pylex™ plus Sencor® to below-commercially-acceptable levels. Novel, low-dose, frequent application programs containing Pylex™ or siduron (Tupersan®) were developed for season-long crabgrass or goosegrass control in creeping bentgrass greens. Greens-height creeping bentgrass quality was preserved following five biweekly treatments of Tupersan® at rates between 6 and 24 lb./A and Pylex™ at 0.125 fl. oz./A. Tupersan® programs controlled smooth crabgrass and suppressed goosegrass while Pylex™ programs controlled goosegrass and suppressed smooth crabgrass. The data from these studies indicate that utilizing low-dose Pylex™ in combination with Sencor® can impart acceptable bermudagrass safety while also controlling goosegrass effectively. For creeping bentgrass greens, the low-dose, frequent application of Tupersan® is the safest legal option for golf course superintendents to control smooth crabgrass effectively, while having some ability to suppress goosegrass.

Brazil's Northeast region is characterized by semi-arid climate, and the precipitated volumes usually lower than the evaporation and, making use of vital irrigation for sustainable agricultural production, however, inadequate irrigation management linked to local conditions, has favored processes salinization and sodification soils, promoting the degradation and abandonment of extensive formerly productive areas. Among the areas affected by salts in this region, we highlight the Irrigated Perimeter of São Gonçalo - PB in soil degradation situation with salt problems and this gave rise to the filing of study methods and techniques aimed at improving the physical and chemical characteristics ground. The experiment was installed in previously identified area as saline-sodic soil possessed in the Irrigated Perimeter of São Gonçalo, and the recovery was made of the application of methods and phytoremediation technique with herb-salt (Atriplex moneywort L.), grass crow's foot bath (Eleusine indica L.), Salsa - Brava (Ipomoea asarifolia L.) and Agricultural Gypsum. The survey consisted of eight treatments, with four replications, the treatments were subjected to a randomized block design (RBD), with the following treatments: i) atriplex cultivation; ii) grass-foot-chicken farming, iii) salsa culture, iv) soil with gypsum; v) application of gypsum associated with atriplex cultivation; vi) application of gypsum associated with grass growing chicken's foot; vii) application of gypsum associated with the parsley cultivation and viii) soil without management (control), a total area of 62 m² conducted under field conditions in portions of 1.40 x 1.40 m. With this study we intend to recover salt affected soil, using an alternative method more economically viable and sustainable through plants capable of extracting soil excess salts.

Weed control has been a popular topic in Taiwan while the management of the weed in the turf of public park was rarely studied locally. As suggested in literatures, the protocol for managing weed on site is to identify the weed first, followed by studying the growth characteristics of the weed and the effective herbicides will then be identified. In this thesis, weed species and their coverage were identified in three local public parks of San Chung City. The turfgrass species planted in each of three parks is bermudagrass﹝Cynodon spp.﹞, centipedegrass ﹝Eremochloa ophiuroides (Munro) Hack﹞, and mixture of bermudagrass and sourgrass ﹝Paspalum conjugatum Berg.﹞respectively. The goosegrass ﹝Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn.﹞was identified as the common species of weed in the three parks and thus was chosen as the weed species for study. The growth characteristics and the effective herbicide control measures without damaging the turf species were investigated. The results were summarized as follows: 1. All the three parks studied were suffered from different levels of weed invasion. Ten major weed species belonged to six families were identifed. Goosegrass was the common.species among the major species with the coverage ranging from 0.4 to 1 %. 2. The seed of goosegrass was germinated in the temperature above 20/15 oC (day/night) in phytotrone. The optimum growth was observed in the 25/20 oC and 30/25 oC temperature treatment. The positive correlation between dry weights of goosegrass with temperature treatments was observed. The result suggested the 30/25 oC temperature treatment was the best condition for the growth of goosegrass. While the goosegrass flowered in about the same time among all the temperature treatments, it suggested the temperature did not affect the development of goosegrass into reproductive stage. 3. The effect of pre-emergence herbicides on the turf was studied in the greenhouse. The results suggested the pendimethalin at the rate of 3.4 kg ha-1 provided the best weed control of goosegrass without damaging the turf. Alachlor at the rate of 3.0 kg ha-1 and pendimethalin at the rate of 1.7 kg ha-1 can control the goosegrass up to 85-100% at 4 WAT. Both were the second best treatments. Oxadiazon injured the turf severely , especially on centipedegrass. 4. The effect of post-emergence herbicides on the turf was also studied in greenhouse. The treatment of MSMA+metribuzin was effective on the bermudagrass turf while fluazifop-butyl did not show to be effective. Centipedegrass was damaged by the MSMA+metribuzin treatment. Fluazifop-butyl at the rate of 0.15 kg ha-1 was shown to be effective in centipedegrass to control the goosegrass at the stages of 3-5 leaf and 2-4 tiller. The same rate was not effective in controlling the goosegrass with the stage after the inflorescence has emerged. Neither MSMA+metribuzin nor fluazifop-butyl was suitable to control goosegrass in sourgrass lawn. 5. Field evaluation of the control measures was performed on a newly planted centipedegrass turf on another public park. Pendimethalin and fluazifop- butyl was used for pre- and post-emergence control measures respectively. It proved to be effective. However, further study is needed to further understand the effects of herbicides and the responses of the turfgrass on the turf.

Fluazifop-P-butyl, a selective graminicide, is widely used to control annual grass weeds. The action mechanism of this herbicide is to inhibit the activity of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase; EC 6.4.1.2), which is responsible for the lipid biosynthesis. In order to explore the resistance mechanism, resistant (R)- and susceptible (S)-biotype of goosegrass [Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn.] treated with 14C-fluazifop-P-butyl were studied. Although no significant difference of herbicide uptake between R- and S-biotype, and even the higher translocation rate of 14C-fluazifop and its metabolites in R-biotype was found, it is suggested that the herbicide metabolism is involved in resistance mechanism due to the more polar metabolites were found in R-biotype. According to the results of mass spectrum analysis, six signals including m/z 512, 432, 423, 415, 314 and 160 under POS scanning mode, and four signals including m/z 788, 623, 593 and 162 under NEG scanning mode appeared in both R- and S-biotype. These signals had stronger intensities in R-biotype, except m/z 162. Interestingly, six signals including m/z 202.180, 219.012, 255.944, 288.963, 310.156 and 340.865, only appeared in R-biotype, and twenty-one signals including m/z 333.011, 525.977, 631.027, 647.003, 688.030, 827.067, 941.060, 989.120, 182.034, 191.039, 200.044, 214.918, 265.023, 322.937, 328.887, 338.343, 352.948, 365.107, 374.038, 381.080 and 394.920 only appeared in S-biotype, suggesting different metabolite profile between R- and S-biotype. In this metabolite study, the generation of 2-[4-(5-trifluoro- methyl-2-pyridyloxy)phenoxy] propanol, 5-trifluoromethyl-2-hydroxy- pyridine and 5-trifluoromethyl-2-pyridine suggested that certain reduction reaction might be happened. Therefore, we attempted to clarify the role of cytochrome P450 reductase (CYP; EC 1.2.6.4) in fluazifop metabolism. Coupled with the study on the activity of cytochrome P450 reductase, it is suggests that fluazifop-P-butyl in goosegrass was hydrolyzed to fluazifop acid, and then reduced to 2-[4-(5-trifluoromethyl-2-pyridyloxy) phenoxy] propanol by cytochrome P450 reductase. Subsequently, 4-(5-trifluoromethyl-2-puridyl)oxyphenol was formed, and both 5-tri- fluoromethyl-2-hydroxy-pyridine and 5-trifluoromethyl-2-pyridone were formed through reduction catalyzed by cytochrome P450 reductase.

Goosegrass, a common annual poaseas weed of vegetible fields, orchards and none-cultivated lands, they grows fast in summer time of Taiwan. Fluazifop-P-butyl, a selective post-emergence herbicide, controls the grass effectively by inhibiting the acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) which is the crucial enzyme of fatty acid biosynthesis. In recent years, many cases of goosegrass were reported to be resistant to fluazifop, and become a big problem in its control especially in the south central fields of Taiwan. In this study, fluazifop resistant and susceptible biotypes of goosegrass are AOPPlied to study the molecular mechanism of resistance by comparing the agronomic traits, pysiological reactions and sequences of ACCase gene. Though the agronimic traits are almost identical between two biotypes, their genomes show 11.0% differences by the analysis of SSR markers. The resistant biotype could significantly regrowth with new tillers at 7 days after fluazifop treatment and the responses (ED50) of resistant and susceptible biotype seedling are 0.197 mM and 0.004 mM, respectively, and the resistance index [ED50 (R) / ED50 (S)] is about 49. The resistance index maintained through the whole growth stages susgests that the resistance is very stable. Besides, comparison of the chorophyll and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents of the resistant biotype (1.2 mg/g FW and 24.9 nmole/g FW) and the susceptible biotype (24.9 nmole/g FW and 35.2 mg/g FW) after treated with 0.5 mM fluazifop, showed that the R biotype is less damaged by fluazifop. Sequences aomparison of the CT domain s found a point mutation (A→G) leading to an amino acid changed (Asp→Gly) at the 2,078 position which may alter the three-dimensional conformation of fluazifop active site, and cause the resistance.

Full textFinger millet (Eleusine coracana) is believed to be adapted to the arid and semi-arid regions, highly tolerant to pests, diseases and drought. It has the potential to produce a high forage biomass with fewer inputs under good production practices. The aim of the study was to evaluate the potential of finger millet as a fodder crop on the Pietersburg Plateau under rainfed and irrigation conditions, planted in rows and broadcast. The study was conducted for two consecutive seasons (2017 and 2018) at the Syferkuil Experimental Farm (SEF), University of Limpopo. Treatments consisted of two watering treatments (irrigation and rainfed) and two planting methods (broadcast and row planting). Seeding rate was 10 kg ha-1 with the inter row spacing of 25 cm. Irrigation had a significant effect on the dry matter production of finger millet (P ≤ 0.05). During 2017 growing season, under rainfed condition, the crop experienced zero production due to low rainfall. The total dry matter production of finger millet under rainfed conditions in 2018 was 3371 kg ha-1 for row planting and 3770 kg ha-1 for broadcasting. The dry matter production of finger millet under irrigation and row planting was 5318 kg ha-1 compared to 3371 kg ha-1 produced under row planting in the rainfed conditions. Broadcasting under irrigation produced 4890 kg ha-1 whereas broadcasting under rainfed conditions yielded 3770 kg ha-1. Planting method had no significant effect on the dry matter production of finger millet (P ≤ 0.05). The total dry matter production in 2017 was 5668 kg ha-1 and 5122 kg ha 1 under row planting and broadcast respectively, 2018 season produced the total dry matter production of 5122 kg ha-1 under row planting and 4892 kg ha-1 under broadcast. Finger millet planted under rainfed in rows had the CP% of 14.76 and 16.87% when broadcasted. In all the treatments CP% was higher than 10%. The ADF% was 33.02% under rainfed conditions and it ranged between 30.99% and 31.53% in 2017 and 2018 for row planting under irrigation. Finger millet can be considered an alternative fodder crop for livestock farmers in the Pietersburg Plateau

Finger millet (FM) (Eleusine coracana) grains are the staple food in Africa and India for communities with low socio-economic growth. The grains have high content of calcium, dietary fibre, carbohydrates that are rich in protein, fat, iron, phosphorus, vitamin and essential amino acids. Flours from milky cream (MC), brown and black varieties of FM were fortified with vitamin (vit) B₂ and zinc oxide (ZnO) in order to restore the nutrients that were lost during milling and sieving processes. The main aim of the study was to analyse the physical, nutritional composition and functional properties of flours from three (3) FM varieties fortified with vit B2 and ZnO. Pearl millet was used for comparison with the results obtained from this study. MC, brown and black varieties of FM flour treatments were arranged as a completely randomized design (CRD) in three (3) replicates. Physical properties: dimensional properties, colour attributes, kernel weight, bulk density (BD), true density, porosity, surface area, kernel volume, aspect ratio, sphericity and moisture content of the FM grains were analysed. Vitamins and minerals were also analysed. Functional properties: colour attributes, bulk density (BD), water absorption capacity (WAC), oil absorption capacity (OAC), swelling capacity (SC), swelling index (SI), foaming capacity (FC), foaming solubility (FS), dispersibility (Dis), viscosity (cool & hot paste), pasting properties, thermal properties and microscopic structure of FM flours were determined. Data generated were analysed using SPSS version 23.0. Moisture content of MC FM grain and flour was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than brown and black varieties but was within the specified range of <12%. This indicated the long storage shelf-life of the grains and flours. Length of brown FM grains was significantly higher (p < 0.05) when compared to MC and black varieties. MC variety was significantly higher than other varieties in width, kernel weight, bulk density, true density, aspect ratio and sphericity. The information obtained from this study will help in designing suitable equipment for planting, harvesting, storage, processing and packaging of grains. Pearl millet grain was significantly higher than FM flours in all physical properties. MC FM was significantly higher iii in L* (whiteness/ brightness), b* (yellowness/ blueness), C* (chroma), Hº (hue angle) and ZnO values compared to brown and black flours. MC raw fortified finger millet (RFFM) and instant fortified finger millet (IFFM) flours were significantly higher in vitamin B2. People prefer fortified MC flour because most of people living in South Africa use white maize as their staple food and it is similar to MC. Colour is the most important quality parameter in food processing industries and it is also attracts the consumer’s choice and preference. The vitamins and minerals that were lost during sieving, drying and milling were replaced by the two (2) fortificants added which may help to reduce the micronutrient deficiencies. Milky cream FM flours showed significantly high (p < 0.05) values in BD, WAC, OAC, SI, FC and dis. These are the fundamental physico-chemical properties that reflect the interaction between the composition and molecular structure. Length of brown FM grains was significantly higher (p < 0.05) when compared to MC and black variety. The MC variety was significantly higher than other varieties in width, kernel weight, bulk density, true density, aspect ratio and sphericity. Pearl millet was significantly higher than FM flours in all physical properties. MCFM variety was significantly higher in L* (whiteness/ brightness), b* (yellowness/ blueness), C* (chroma), and Hº (hue angle) values as compared to other FM varieties. Moisture content of MC flour was significantly higher as compared to brown and black FM flours. Pasting properties of MC raw finger millet (RFM) and RFFM flours showed significantly higher in peak viscosity (PV) (3518 cP), final viscosity (FV) (6554 cP), breakdown viscosity (BDV) (703 cP) and setback viscosity (SV) (3868 cP) as compared to other RFM and RFFM flours. Brown instant finger millet (IFM) and IFFM flours had significantly higher of PV (723 cP), trough viscosity (TV) (655 cP) and FV (983 cP). IFFM flours had significantly higher values of PV (712 cP), TV (614 cP) and FV (970 cP), respectively. The instant pearl millet (IPM) and instant fortified pearl millet (IFPM) showed significantly higher value in BDV (330 cP and 131 cP) and SV (362 cP and 346 cP), respectively. Thermal properties of black RFM was significantly higher in onset temperature (To) (74.31), peak temperature (TP) (81.94ºC) and conclusion temperature (Tc) (89.64) and RFFM starches were significantly high in To (81.80ºC), TP (84.22ºC) and TC (92.81ºC), respectively. Milky ivcream IFM starch showed significantly higher values in TO (84.57ºC), TP (87.27ºC), Tc (92.81ºC) and ΔH (7.63ºC) compared to other starches. Brown IFFM flour was significantly higher value in To (85.88ºC) and TP (87.14ºC). The starch of IFPM was significantly higher in enthalpy of gelatinisation (6.91ºC) and PHI (2.94ºC) as compared to other FM starches. Brown IFM flour showed significantly higher value in gelatinisation temperature range (13.50ºC). The microscopic structure revealed that RFM and RFFM flours had oval and smooth surfaces. RFM and RFFM flours showed positive effect after fortificants were added because the starch granules, protein bodies and protein matrix were visible and formed crystal. IFM and IFFM flours had some holes, dents and rough surfaces. Instant fortified flours showed negative effect after fortificants were added due to technological processes such as recooking and remilling of flours. Different variations observed on physical, nutritional and functional properties after adding the fortificants may affect the physical, chemical and organoleptic properties of food produced from fortified flour. There is need to fortify FM flours with ZnO which may help to replace the value lost during milling and sieving operations. It is possible that the availability of ZnO could reduce the incidence of some non-communicable diseases.

Finger millet (FM) [Eleusine coracana] is an underutilised cereal grain used as a food source in South Africa. Increased research interest in FM has span over the years owing to its unique nutritional and bioactive composition. Following the recent interest in natural curative substances over their synthetic counterparts in the treatment of food dependent diseases, FM has shown potential nutraceutical effects. Some important health effects like antidiabetic, antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties have been reported in recent trials with FM. In view of the increasing utilisation and application of FM in the region of Thulamela Municipality, Vhembe District of South Africa, two common indigenous FM varieties (brown and dark brown) were obtained and analysed for their physicochemical properties, levels of minerals, phytic acid, phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities. For this process, malted non-alcoholic beverages were produced and analysed for their physicochemical properties, levels of phenolic compounds, and total phenolics and antioxidant activities. FM grains were soaked, germinated and kilned at an interval of 24 h for 96 h, using sorghum as an external reference. Mineral composition of the FM and sorghum samples were analysed using an inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS), and atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS). Identification and quantification of phenolic compounds were performed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometer (UPLC-MS). All experiments were performed in triplicate except for the UPLC-MS analysis of the malted non-alcoholic beverages that was done in duplicate. Data were analysed by one way analysis of variance, and the mean values were separated by Duncan’s multiple comparison test using SPSS version 24.0. Data showed that the FM varieties were rich in macro- and micro- or trace elements. The macro-elements calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and sulphur were found in high amounts ranging from 1597.37 mg/ kg – 6775.03 mg/ kg; iron, zinc, strontium and silicon were found in significant amounts in the range 21.47 mg/ kg – 55.67 iii mg/ kg, copper and boron were found in low amounts (2.2 mg/ kg – 7.7 mg/ kg), along with selenium and cobalt (0.02 mg/ kg – 0.05 mg/ kg). Heavy metals, barium and aluminium were found in the FM varieties. Varietal difference was found to play an important role in the mineral content of the grains during malting. Malting for 24 h reduced mineral content except for sodium. Beyond 48 h of malting, mineral content increased, particularly, for 96 h in FM grain malt. Significant (p < 0.05) increases in the mineral content of FM varieties were noted at 48 h and 96 h of malting. Increase occurred at 72 h of malting for potassium, iron and boron. Malting did not have any effect on the manganese content of the dark brown FM; however, it increased the manganese content at 48 h of malting for brown FM. Malting for 96 h significantly (p < 0.05) reduced sodium content. Consecutive decrease in phytic acid content of the grains was not recorded with durations in malting time. Although statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed, malting did not result in too much change in the physicochemical properties of the grains. Several flavonoids, catechin, epicatechin, quercetin, taxifolin, and hesperitin were isolated, whilst protocatechuic acid was the only phenolic acid detected in the unmalted and malted FM. Increases in catechin, epicatechin and protocatechuic acid were observed for 72 and 96 h malt of brown FM with similar observations recorded for sorghum. Complete loss of taxifolin, catechin, and hesperitin were noted with malting time. FM grains exhibited 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2, 2՛-azinobis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging action and iron reducing activities. Increased iron reducing activity alongside ABTS radical scavenging activity was recorded with malting time. A fermentation-time dependent decrease in the pH of the non-alcoholic beverages, with a corresponding increase in sugar content were recorded. A similar decrease was also recorded for the viscosities of the beverages. The FM malt beverages were found to contain a higher amount of citric acid compared to the sorghum malt beverage. A decrease in the citric acid content with fermentation time was noted in the grain malt beverages fermented with Lactobacillus fermentum, particularly for the iv FM beverage. The phenolic compounds detected in the FM malt beverages fermented with the grain microbial flora and Lactobacillus fermentum were protocatechuic acid, catechin and epicatechin. Taxifolin and kaempferol along with the earlier mentioned compounds were detected in the sorghum malt beverage. Catechin was found in higher amount compared to other phenolic compounds in the FM and sorghum malt beverages. FM malt beverages were found to contain a higher amount of total phenolics compared to the beverage prepared from sorghum malt. Fermentation with the grains’ microbial flora and L. fermentum resulted in reduced total phenolics of FM and sorghum malt beverages, particularly after 24 h of fermentation. A fermentation-time dependent decrease in total phenolics of FM beverages fermented with L. fermentum was noted. Fermentation within 24 - 48 h using the grain microbial flora showed higher total individual phenolic compounds for the dark brown FM and sorghum, compared to other fermentation periods. Fermentation of the beverages for 24 h retained a higher amount of the total phenolics compared to other fermentation periods, especially for the L. fermentum beverages. Reduced total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of the beverages were noted at 24 h of fermentation for the two microbial sources. Significant (p < 0.05) increases in total phenolics were observed within 72 – 96 h of fermentation of the brown FM malt beverage with the grains’ microbial flora. Fermentation for 72 h and 96 h with L. fermentum increased the total phenolic content of the brown FM. Increase in total flavonoid content (TFC) of brown FM malt beverage was noted at 72 h fermentation for both microbial sources. Unlike with L. fermentum, no significant (p > 0.05) change in TFC was observed for the dark brown FM beverage after 24 h fermentation with the grains’ microbial flora. Beverages exhibited DPPH, ABTS radical scavenging action and iron reducing activities, which were significantly (p < 0.05) reduced at 96 h fermentation for both microbial sources. The 24 h fermented beverage retained a higher amount of total phenolic and flavonoid contents, and had higher antioxidant activity compared to other fermentation periods for both microbial sources. The study shows that FM is a rich source of essential minerals and v phenolic compounds, and demonstrates that 72 to 96 h of malting has a positive effect on minerals and certain phenolic compounds over the 48 h malting period widely used for preparation of FM malt. The presence of hesperitin in FM grain was established. A new method was developed for the production of FM non-alcoholic beverage with measurable amounts of health-promoting compounds. An ideal fermentation period (24 h) for FM malt non-alcoholic beverage production with enhanced health-promoting compounds, using Lactobacillus fermentum was demonstrated. Fermentation limit (96 h) for production of FM malt beverage using either the grain microbial flora or L. fermentum was confirmed. These findings provide a rationale for increased utilisation of FM as a functional food grain, and its use as malt in production of non-alcoholic beverage for health promotion and wellness.

Goosegrass [Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn.], a common annual poaseas weed of uplands in Taiwan. Fluazifop-P-butyl, the aryloxyphenoxycarboxylic acids (APPs), and sethoxydim, the cyclohexanedione (CHDs) ,which belong acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase; EC 6.4.1.2) inhibitor, are usually to be used to control poaseas weeds, such like goosegrass. In this study, in order to confirm whether the cross resistance of fluazifop and sethoxydim happen in fluazifop-resistent (R) and -susceptible (S) biotypes of goosegrass. The difference between enzyme activity and enzyme kinetic characters of ACCase of (R) and (S) biotypes under herbicides treatment were analysed to understand the resistance mechanism. According the dose response of injury index after treatment of fluazifop-P-butyl and sethoxydim, the resistance index is 18.9 and 19.0, respectively. It shows the cross resistance of fluazifop and sethoxydim exists in (R) biotype. The chrolophyll content of (R) biotype is significantly higher than (S) biotype, malondialdehyde (MDA) content and electrolyte leakage are both significantly lower than (S) biotype under treatment of herbicides. It represents damage of cells is lower in (R) biotype. And in the enzyme activity, (S) biotype decreased faster than (R) biotype in both treatment of fluazfop-acid and sethoxydim. The I50 of (R) and (S) biotypes under treatment of fluazifop-acid is 204.5 μM and 10.7 μM, respectively, and resistance index is 19.1. The I50 of (R) and (S) biotypes under treatment of sethoxydim is 64.0 μM and 4.8 μM, respectively, and resistance index is 13.4. Besides, the ACCase enzyme kinetic characters with three substrates acetyl-CoA, ATP and HCO3- were analysed to understand the reaction of ACCase to fluazfop-acid and sethoxydim. The Km of three substrates in (R) biotype is lower than (S) biotype under treatment of both herbicides. And The Vmax of three substrates in (R) biotype is higher than (S) biotype under treatment of both herbicides. Finally, the change of fatty acids biosynthesis of (R) and (S) biotypes under treatment of fluazifop-butyl and sethoxydim were analysed. In (S) biotype, the content of long chain fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids were decreased under treatment of both herbicides, but not in (R) biotype.
