Abstract:
This thesis aims at collating the historiographic practices of two 14th century italian franciscans, who wrote still unpublished universal chronicles. Fra elemosina, a simple umbrian franciscan, who died after 1336, wrote two autograph chronicles. Paolino da venzia, bishop of pozzuoli, died in 1344. He was a courtier particularly skillful in negociating and entered the republic of venice and pope john xxii's services. He was the author of three types of universal chroncles epithoma, compendium and satirica ystoria - half of which preserved copies were written under his own control. The thesis first gives an account of the two mens's life and studies the manuscript tradition of their works. Then it attempts to reconstruct, through a material history of the texts, the reason why the authors both chose universal history. The study of the two compilers' sources, the way these sources are used and the rewriting work from on chronicle to the other bring to light their main characteristics. The relations between paolino's manuscripts abundant iconography and the text is also being analyzed. This analysis allows to underline the importance of paolino's editorial efforts, wich are also evident in the conception of particularly rich indices and tables. Studying
